Paddy’s Page Revd. Paddy Beresford Vicar of St. John’s Church Broadbridge Heath Church Road, RH12 3LD 01403 274114 The best thing before sliced bread Sometimes we have things in our hands that totally change the way we operate. For me the most significant was the first Psion Palm Computer – that was given to me by an American friend. To have electronic addresses and notes that could with a button be cross-referenced, meant the end to those embarrassing moments due to my bad memory – it was a life-changer and the best thing since sliced bread at that time. It was the talk of my colleagues and everyone wanted to know what it was and what it could do. When the Israelites were in the wilderness, God provided a fluffy white substance and immediately they were picking it up, smelling it and placing it to their lips, saying “manna”, which means in Hebrew: “what is it?”. They’d never seen anything like it but they soon discovered that when they ate it, it sustained them. Moses told them that they were to collect only enough manna for one day, and if they tried to collect more, it would rot. The prayer that most of us know includes the line ‘Give us this day our daily bread’. It was a reference to that manna. And when we pray that, we may not know exactly how God will provide for us, but His promise is that it will be enough to sustain us. There are times in our lives when everything that could go wrong does go wrong, day after day it seems to come at us. So it’s interesting that Jesus says we should ask for ‘daily bread’ – every day we need to pray for a fresh supply. The power, the relevance and the beauty of this prayer is that God promises to give us each day enough to be able to handle whatever life throws at us. Pray it today, go to Jesus and say: ‘Lord, I’ve come for my daily bread’ and then watch to see how He’ll give you everything you need to cope with the events of the day. And I pray that for you – the answer will be the best thing since sliced bread.

BBH Mag Sport News from local sports clubs. If you would like to publish your sports news in this magazine please contact the Editor by email: bbh.mag@gmail.com FOOTBALL
Broadbridge Heath Football Club We were all deeply saddened to hear that Club Stalwart Malcolm Curnock had passed away. Malcolm joined Broadbridge Heath Football Club as a player when he moved into the village in 1974 and continued to play for the club until hanging up his boots in 2011 having moved up to the clubs most senior team, the Veterans for the last 25 years.. As well as playing Malcolm also helped run a Junior team from Under 8 through to Under 16, he had a spell managing the clubs third team and has been a valued member of the senior club committee for the best part of 30 years. For the past decade Malcolm's main role on the committee has been to help the club move from the District Councils Leisure Centre to our own facilities where the clubs destiny will once again be in our own hands. It is with great regret that he will not be with us when the pavilion and ground open but he will certainly be remembered for his dedicated work and commitment to the club. Football The rain has finally stopped and the pitches have dried out and all our teams are busy trying to catch up with a backlog of fixtures. Heath first team have played 10 matches in the last five weeks, won seven , drew one and lost two. The biggest scalp being the 1-0 home win over top of the table Horsham, a fantastic achievement for the Heath players many of whom have come all the way through from Under 7. Another notable victory was the 2-1 win over Little Common a result which sees Heath into their second semi-final of the season when they take on Lancing, the winners will play either Newhaven or Horsham in the final. We are still seeking volunteers, we are a very friendly and sociable bunch and the more helpers the easier it is for us all. If you can spare some time please do get in touch with me.

BBH Mag SPORT CRICKET
Broadbridge Heath Cricket Club Byfleets Lane Broadbridge Heath West Sussex RH12 3PB In my journeys around the county with football there is an awful lot of drying-out to be done before the summer sports of cricket and stoolball can be played in Sussex – but it’s getting close now with only 6 weeks to go before the cricket season starts. Indoor nets have been going well and our indoor league team has again been performing miracles against strong County League opposition, beating Three Bridges recently with Neil Charman again scoring 50. He’s having a stunning season so let’s hope he has not peaked too early. Meanwhile, the players are tuning-in to the World T20 Cup which will be in full swing by the time you read this. If that tournament tempts readers to have a go (those new but light big bats really do hit the ball out of our ground) then contact us through our web site. In next month’s magazine I hope to be able to report that outdoor nets have started, at least on our all weather wicket. Don’t forget to have a look at the Club’s website and on Facebook. http://broadbridgeheath.play-cricket.com/home/home.asp DARTS
BBH & SHELLEY DARTS TEAMS VYING FOR END SILVER WARE. The Barns Green Monday night darts team recently completed a 6 - 2 home win over The White Horse. This was followed by the first league defeat of the season when going down 3 - 5 against The Shelley. Well done to The Shelley! One of the pivotal games saw Fran Pickett hit 180 and narrowly miss 149 and 127 check outs in going down 2-1 in an excellent singles match. Barns Green Club hosted the Jack Tofts Cup Final between Southwater and The Kings Arms Billingshurst on 7th March. On the same night the Barns Green team will be competed in the Mickey Edwards Plate Final at the Rising Sun against The Coot. The Friday night side had a 8 -1 away win against The Cat And Canary featuring a 105 outshot by skipper Andy Mason. The following week saw a visit from league leaders and last year's champions Broadbridge Heath. Despite being 3-1 up, the Green finally succumbed to a 6-3 defeat. In a return to form The Green then produced a 5-3 away win at third placed team The Railway, so keeping second place in Division One. The Railway included Sussex Ladies A Team player Crystal Woodrow fresh from beating BDO world ranking number 6 Zoe Jones (£10,000 career prize money) 3-1 in the latest County A team. Disaster struck the following week in the repeat fixture, a tough quarter final Victory Cup match in which the Railway played well to knock out the holders Barns Green 7 -2 . Darts report by Barry Hearnshaw. Thank you Barry. 9

Happy Easter from all of us at Shelley Primary School! The last few weeks have been a fun and exciting time at Shelley, with our World Book Day celebrations being a huge highlight – the children looked fantastic in their costumes as always! More recently we have also enjoyed our annual Spring Concert and Decorated Egg Competition. You may have seen Shelley Primary mentioned in the press and online recently, and have heard that the new school site, which had been planned for 2017, will now not be built in that timescale, if at all. We will obviously send any further information out to parents as appropriate, but in the meantime it is likely that our current site will be receiving some changes to allow us to cater for the increased number of children in the area. We look forward to meeting our new September intake children shortly, and you can be assured that the staff here at Shelley are committed to providing a happy and fulfilling time at school for all our children, wherever the site may be.

The Financial Fairy Godmother of Broadbridge Heath We can’t all be Superman / Superwoman When I read the sad news about the late Paul Daniels being diagnosed with a terminal brain tumour it got me thinking about the celebrities who have passed away in recent months, including David Bowie, Terry Wogan, Alan Rickman, Cilla Black, Leonard Nimoy and Terry Pratchett. It occurred to me that many of them were suffering from critical illnesses such as heart failure and cancer, for which an insurance policy would pay out a lump sum on diagnosis. Many of these celebrities had been battling their conditions for years. Survival rates are improving, and a payment could help you manage an impaired lifestyle, help you through your last days in the worst case, or help provide for the ones you leave behind. As you may know, it costs more to raise a child than it does to buy a house. Many of us insure the value of our mortgage but what about our family? Recent research suggests that the cost of raising a child from birth to the age of 21 is now £231,843*. That’s more than the price of the average house, and takes up over a third of the average household’s net income. The scary thing is that so many of us don’t have a plan in place to continue to meet these expenses after a sudden loss of income, whether this be emergency savings or a policy to pay out if we get sick. Far fewer people these days have the comfort of extended sick pay from work, making it crucial to have a backup plan. It can be tempting to hope for the best and trust that ‘it won’t happen to me’. Unfortunately ‘it’ is happening to more and more people, and the sooner we look at how we might be affected, the better able we are to put a plan in place to soften the blow. After all, whether we have children to support or not, whilst we would all like to think of ourselves as Superman/ Superwoman, look what happened to Christopher Reeve… * Cost of a child calculations compiled by CEBR in December 2015, additional research conducted by Opinium Research January 2016.
