Paddy’s Page: by the vicar of St John’s church.

BABY JESUS In an interview on The One Show (BBC1) a couple of years ago, the comedian Jimmy Carr, said, “I like the early years of Jesus… he got wacky as an adult”. But how wacky was He? Revd. Paddy Beresford. Vicar of St John’s church Broadbridge Heath

How wacky was His demonstration of how to care for others, how to communicate through good words, the importance of saying sorry and forgiving those who harm us? How wacky was it that He touched untouchables and gave purpose and value to the ostracised and lonely? Every Christmas, Christians celebrate the birth of Jesus. The stuff of nativity plays is absolutely right in focusing on this Holy child born in Bethlehem. However, if we only think of Jesus as a baby, might we be missing a life-changing opportunity? He grew up, and it’s true that His grown-up words may challenge and make us feel uncomfortable but they have the power to change lives. C.S. Lewis, the author of the Narnia books (amongst others) said: “You must make your choice. Either this man was, and is, the Son of God, or else a madman or something worse. You can shut him up for a fool, you can spit at him and kill him as a demon or you can fall at his feet and call him Lord and God, but let us not come with any patronizing nonsense about his being a great human teacher. He has not left that open to us. He did not intend to.” Martin Sheen abandoned his faith for a time, but he said recently, "I have returned to my church. I have never forgotten that even though I turned my back on God, in my time of greatest need, he came to find me." And this is what so many discover – the Jesus whose birth we celebrate at Christmastime actually goes out looking for us – so that our darkness turns to light and despair turns to hope. It would be a mistake, when Christmas is over, to wrap Him away for another year, when He can bring you peace and hope every day. 5

Karen

MacDonald

The Financial Fairy Godmother of Broadbridge Heath

Managing your Christmas finances I love Christmas, but it is easy to get carried away and spend much more than we intend. As a financial adviser what would I suggest? Don’t leave things to the last minute – If you do, you will probably spend a lot more because you run out of time to shop around. Budget - Work out how much you are going to spend on each individual and for each day. You don’t want to run out of money and end up having to fund Christmas on credit. Plan what you’re going to eat - At Christmas, you can easily buy much more food than you need, so make a careful list and stick to it. Secret Santa - I love this idea! I know a family with a lot of children, and instead of buying individual presents, each child buys one present for one other child. That way they end up with a much more meaningful gift, and far less ‘junk’. Don’t forget January - Many people get paid before Christmas and their next payday is at the end of January. It can feel as though January is a very long month. Again this leads to a risk of using credit, so make sure you spread your spending if you can. Experiences - Children tend to end up with gifts that they don’t actually use. An alternative present is to buy them a day out that they can remember forever. Sales - Plan ahead by going to the January sales where you can buy things at a fraction of the price ready for next Christmas! And finally, enjoy your Christmas and I'll see you again in the New Year.
