Broadbridge Heath musician’s new mini musical for 7 to 11 year olds. “The Tale of 3 Trees” by Ann Beresford; now available for performance by schools and churches. A new mini musical for children aged 7 to 11 has been written by Ann Beresford, a Broadbridge Heath musician. “The Tale of 3 Trees” is a reflection on the Easter story in the Bible. It’s based on a traditional Christian folk tale about three trees who dream about what they will become in their future. One tree is made into the manger where the baby Jesus slept. The second tree became a fishing boat which carried Jesus and the disciples through a storm. The third tree was made into the simple cross on which Jesus died. Ann, wife of Paddy Beresford the vicar of St John’s Church in Broadbridge Heath, originally wrote the music for the children’s summer holiday club held at the church two years ago. It was so popular with the children she has now had it published. Ann is thrilled that it is now available for schools and churches to perform. “There’s lots in this musical which will keep 7 to 11 year olds entertained and engaged” she says “apart from the catchy songs and drama there’s lots of craft ideas and suggestions for teaching or discussion on themes such as hopes and disappointments and how our dreams may be fulfilled in unexpected ways." “The Tale Of 3 Trees” music book and CD is available from the publishers “Out of the Ark Music” www.outoftheark.co.uk/the-tale-of-three-trees.html , or Out of the Ark, Units F1 & F2, Kingsway Business Park, Oldfield Road, Hampton, Middlesex. Bridge House Agility Club welcomes new dogs (and their owners). As Broadbridge Heath continues to grow and attract new families; many of them include four legged friends. Our waiting list is now open for the new term to dog owners interested in trying dog agility for the first time or wishing to pick it up again. Our club, conveniently located on the outskirts of the village at Bridge House Riding School, Billingshurst Road, was set up in 2000 and is Kennel Club registered. The club aims to promote a greater understanding of dogs by training handlers and their dogs to work happily together at both a fun and competitive standard. The beginner’s class is on a Monday starting at 7.30pm (to help set the course up) with an hour’s lesson from 7.45 to 8.45pm. This takes place in the indoor sand school which means we train most weeks throughout the year. Club membership fees are just £12.50 per year and course fees are £30 per quarter. For just under £3 every Monday you and your dog will learn new skills together, exercise and make new friends. Please contact our membership secretary, Gillian Berry, via email gillian@berry.me.uk for further information on joining. ———————————————————–————————-————————— LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Send your views by email to bbh.mag@gmail.com A TRIBUTE TO JACK CHARMAN The Cricket Club was very sad to hear of the recent death of Jack Charman, one of our old players. Apart from his national service, Jack spent most of his 90 years around the village area and until recent years would regularly be seen working on his fabulous garden in Robin Hood Lane where there was no sign of the clay that seems to be everywhere else. He was also a fine cricketer who would have done really well in the modern era, although he would have had to use a different bat. The one he had was his dad’s (who also played for the village) and it was black from many years of linseed oil. Jack was a real character and I understand that he was still keeping everyone in his nursing home on their toes right up to his last moments. It was a real pleasure to remember him at his funeral service at St. John’s. Jack and his father before him were village people, who worked locally and were especially keen on a local outdoor life, particularly their own gardens and village sport. They were part of generations who supported village events and local community life. How times have changed. Colin Case PARKING i do a lot of walking around Broadbridge Heath and am constantly annoyed by cars parked on pavements, wheeley bins left out and bushes not cut back, all of which mean I have to walk in the road rather than use the footpath. Surely footpaths are for feet and not for cars? Lisa Thomas-Roberts 5

Your waste collection service is changing – are you ready? From February 2018 Horsham District Council will be rolling out changes to your waste and recycling collection service. What’s changing? Your recycling will be collected one week and your household waste will be collected the same day the following week. Garden waste will continue to be collected fortnightly for those who have subscribed to this service. All households will have received information in mid January explaining the changes and giving each household their new personalised collection dates. After that you can also remind yourself of your new collection dates via your online personalised collections calendar: www.horsham.gov.uk/bincalendar Why are we making these changes? The government has set a mandatory national recycling target of 50% by 2020. If we fail to meet this we will incur financial penalties. Currently the Horsham District recycles 44% of its waste so we are close, but we know we can achieve more because investigation into our waste collections have shown that on average 20% of what we currently throw away in our household waste bins can be put into our mixed recycling bin. Over three quarters of local authorities now operate this alternate weekly collection service with some of these councils seeing a resulting increase in recycling of up to 9%. Introducing these changes will also save the council money which will enable us to maintain essential public services against a backdrop of declining government income. If you have any questions about this please visit our website in the first instance which will answer most of your queries and includes a Frequently Asked Questions section. As I mentioned last month, we’ve arranged a meeting for everyone who contacted us to say they’d like to come to an evening WI, so here are the details again: 7.30 – 9.30pm Monday 19 February at St John’s Community Hall (next door to the church) Church Road, Broadbridge Heath, RH12 3LD
There’s free parking if you’re not in the mood for a walk and we’ll have some refreshments when you arrive. We will also be joined by Yvonne Bee, who is a WI adviser, and will give us a little talk about WI and answer all your questions. It’s very informal so just turn up and bring your friends. We’re really looking forward to meeting you all. In the meantime, this is what we have coming up at our Tuesday afternoon meetings: I bet you have some old family films or videos lurking in a cupboard somewhere that you never look at because you no longer have anything to play them on. Well, ‘Lost in the Loft’ can transfer all your memories onto DVDs and Vic Chase is the man who can do it (when he’s not playing guitar in the Phil Collins tribute band, No Jacket Required). So Vic will be coming along in March to tell us how it’s done. Although it still feels like winter, it won’t be long before we can get out in the garden and with that in mind, we’ve booked Ben Cross from Crosslands Flower Nursery to come in April and share his skills and expertise. Crosslands are a family business specialising in British Alstroemeria. What a shame this isn’t in colour!

Praying for Our Local Streets! During 2018 at St John’s Church, we’ll be praying every month for a set of roads in our area – across BBH, Wickhurst Green, and Highwood. We’ll let you know each month which roads are set for that month and would love to hear from you if there’s anything particular you would like us to pray for. All you have to do, if you would like something prayed for, is drop us an email at office@stjohnsbbh.org.uk – be as brief or detailed as you want. For February the roads are: Vinall Gardens, Warnham Road, Cook Way, Beale Close, Highwood Crescent —————————————— VICAR TO RETIRE Revd Paddy Beresford has announced that he will retire in September this year. Sadly this will probably mean that Paddy and his wife Anne will be moving away from the village. Paddy says “We have no firm plans as to where we will be living at this stage but will let you know as the year progresses”. 8
Parish Point Of View Paddy Beresford. Vicar, St John’s Church, Broadbridge Heath, Church Road, RH12 3LD 01403 274114 info@stjohnsbbh.org.uk www.stjohnsbbh.org.uk Children, families and people of all ages are welcome. Be honest: how many of last year’s resolutions did you keep? February is about the time the early enthusiasm begins to wane… We keep promising ourselves we’ll do better. But ‘resolutions’ only happen when we’re ‘resolute’. The best resolutions are elastic - they cannot be broken with a single act. If we decide we’re not going to touch red meat this year, then one burger ruins the resolution. If, on the other hand, we pledge to eat healthier food, each day we have a chance to fulfil the resolution. Let me suggest five elastic spiritual resolutions that can carry you throughout the year. 1. Engage with people more than pixels. Rather than impersonal texts - resolve to spend more time with people. Replace an extended exchange on text with a meeting for coffee. Make a promise of presence. 2. Take your soul seriously. The constant thumping of hatred and dehumanization of our media and TV has consequences for our character; and what we watch, who we associate with, how we speak to others is part of life’s continuous journey of soul shaping, so this year, resolve to turn away from seductive and negative influences. 3. Increase your kindness. Do something good. Behave generously even when you do not feel like it and the habit will grow. Acts of kindness can be a charitable contribution or a gentle word or help with a heavy bag. Just do it.
4. Choose to forgive. All of us have legitimate grievances in our lives. Forgiveness is hard – but an amazing feeling of freedom follows forgiveness. Forgive the person who cuts you up on the motorway. Forgive the person who made an unkind remark about you. God is always willing to forgive, but there’s a reasonable condition - as the Lord’s Prayer says “Forgive us as we forgive those who sin against us”. In addition - allow yourself the latitude of mistakes, have expectations of yourself, but don’t enforce them unrealistically. 2018 gives us another chance to live purposefully. Have a fulfilled and blessed 2018! 9
BBH Mag Sport
News from local sports clubs.
If you would like to publish your sports news in this magazine please contact the Editor by email: bbh.mag@gmail.com FOOTBALL Christmas and New Year is usually a busy time for the club with games against local teams such as Horsham YMCA, Crawley Down Gatwick and Loxwood but the wet weather and waterlogged pitches meant just one of those matches survived, the away trip to Loxwood on the 6th January and that proved to be a very feisty affair on the pitch with Heath being reduced to 10 men with 15 minutes to go; Loxwood then taking the lead and Heath scoring a late equaliser in a 1-1 draw, a good entertaining game for the partisan supporters. Heath first team are still in one cup competition, at least they were at the time of writing; they play Chichester City on Tuesday 23rd January in the Sussex RUR Cup semi-final with the winners playing either Pagham or Newhaven in the final at Lancing, let's hope that one of the teams in the final begin with the letter 'B' and wear blue kit. Apart from the Loxwood game not much happened over the holiday period, the Under 18s have only played one league game since October when they travelled to Steyning Town on Sunday 14th Jan and lost 2-1 to a goal scored in the 94th minute, a disappointing result for the team who currently sit in fourth place in the division. There have been further changes to the management structure of the Reserve team who have struggled with player availability all season but with Graham Shergold returning as manager and assisted by Ismael Vasconcelos and Andy Putnam things do seem to be on the up with several new players joining the club bringing some much needed experience to the team. They also went weeks without a game before playing on Sat 13th Jan when they travelled the short distance to play Horsham YMCA. The home-side have had a great half to the season having played 11 games, won 10 and drawn one it was always going to be a difficult game but the Bears did really well drawing 0-0 and they can consider themselves very unlucky not to have won the game. The juniors have had a break over the holidays but are now back in action, the heavy rain in recent weeks has resulted in the pitch at Warnham being unplayable, in fact the teams have been unable to play there since October and that has meant having to play scheduled home games at their opponents ground, we really do need those new facilities completed. The latest on the new facilities is that work has finally started on the access road to the pavilion, the developers need this entrance to the site in order to construct the pavilion, once complete this road will only be used for service vehicles, disabled parking and emergency vehicle access. Still no news when the developers will actually start work on the pavilion but the latest we heard on completion was August 2018 but don't hold your breath.

Broadbridge Heath Cricket Club
Byfleets Lane Broadbridge Heath West Sussex RH12 3PB www. broadbridgeheath.play-cricket.com As promised, the Club had its AGM recently and it was decided unanimously by members that we should try and continue to put-out two adult league teams next season. So, for the moment, we are not going into partnership with any other club, nor are we going to reduce to one adult team. Over the winter, we are going to do our absolute best to bring-in more members so that we can consistently field two adult teams each Saturday – and we have given ourselves three months to achieve that. A good sign of our strong playing ability has been sustained by our winter indoor 6-aside team whose successful start to the season has continued with another win, this time over Balcombe, another bigger and stronger club. All rounder Tom Endacott starred with bat and ball. We then lost for the first time against Three Bridges, an even bigger and stronger club who chased down our first innings total. That’s it now until the 14th January but, as ever, we continue to punch above our weight. Colin Case

Wanted: New Unit Leader for Rainbows After more than 15 years with Broadbridge Heath Rainbows Sally Carver will be standing down at Easter as unit leader. Sally retired from paid employment some years ago and feels a younger person with more energy would be better suited to the role. Rainbows in Broadbridge Heath will need a new unit leader to continue to run after Easter. Sally is happy to stay on helping the new rainbow leader to guide her through the qualification and help our new leader to reach her full potential. You will be fully supported as you begin your guiding journey not only by Sally but all the other guiding leaders in Broadbridge Heath. ‘Rainbows learn by doing – they get their hands dirty, do sports, arts and crafts and play games. Being a Rainbow is all about having the space to try new things. Through taking part in a range of different activities with girls their own age, Rainbows develop self-confidence and make lots of new friends.’ We would like to take this opportunity to thank Sally for all her years of guiding not only with rainbows but also with brownies and guides.

The First Broadbridge Heath Beavers, Cubs and Scouts We had a busy end to the year. All three units enjoyed a September camp at the Bentley Copse Activity Centre in Shere, which featured such intrepid pursuits as air rifle shooting, crate stacking and go-karting. It also gave children and young people of all ages the opportunity to hone their camping and survival skills and reminded the leaders and volunteers just why sleep deprivation is used as a form of torture! In November, the Beavers, Cubs and Scouts, along with Broadbridge Heath’s Rainbows, Brownies and Guides contributed to the Remembrance Day Service at St John’s Church. Each unit made a powerful and moving presentation, including a “true or false” quiz, poems, artwork and readings. They then led the procession to the village war memorial and placed poppy wreaths. We are all rightfully very proud of our respectful young people. At Christmas the Cubs and Beavers had their festive celebration at Fishers Farm, where Young Leader, Emily, was starring in the pantomime. Oh no they didn’t… oh yes they did! Continued on next page 12
As we look ahead at 2018, it’s presents us with the perfect opportunity to say a big thank you to all the leaders and those who volunteer, either with running the sessions or on the committee. It’s no secret that being a member of the scouting movement as a youngster correlates with going on to great things. From Prime Ministers to TV presenters, sports stars to entrepreneurs, many of the UK’s most successful individuals have been involved in Scouting. If you could spare the time to support this valuable local group, please contact Chairman, Paula Flack by emailing cub1bbh@horshamscouts.com. Whether you are able to offer practical skills to help maintain the equipment and building, have administrative skills that could support the running of the groups, are able to volunteer at activity sessions or even just have a couple of hours to spare once a month and could join the committee, any and all offers of help will be extremely gratefully received.
——————————————————————————————— From the Friends of Shelley School (FOSS) Happy 2018! The FOSS trustees have got back into the swing of things after the Christmas break, and our recent meeting produced a wealth of fundraising ideas, including both old favourites and some new innovations We are planning to build on the success of our newly-introduced Film Nights, and introduce some fun events for adults too, as well as organizing the ever-popular Summer Fete; planning for which has already started in earnest. A plea from us as regards this; we would be very grateful if people reading this feel they could either donate, or approach their employers for Raffle prizes for the FETE – Summer seems sometimes so far away but blink and it will be upon us! We also have many projects that we are hoping and planning to fund within the school; one of our first tasks is to pay for the purchase of new sports kit for the quite amazing pupil sports teams at Shelley School, something we are proud to be able to provide. All in all, we are looking forward to an exciting and challenging year ahead, where, with the always-generous encouragement and participation of parents, carers, and the local community, our fundraising efforts will go from strength to strength! The committee. FOSS is a registered charity, and there are currently nine hardworking trustees. We all have strong connections to the school, and are united by a desire to both promote Shelley School as a valuable and essential asset of the village, and also to raise as much money as we can to help offset the current lack of investment in West Sussex schools by providing extra resources and activities that just cannot be met from the current education budget. We can be contacted via email at fosspta17@gmail.com anytime, and always welcome suggestions, comments and feedback. And donations! Rodena Howes-Yarlett (Chair) 13

The Financial Fairy Godmother of Broadbridge Heath
Women in financial services This year is the 100th anniversary since UK women won the right to vote. But there are still differences in how men and women are treated. Recent research shows that UK women working full-time are still paid less than men in 90% of sectors1. Women comprise just 14% of executive committees, even though 66% of new recruits are female2. Theresa May has tried to redress the balance in her last cabinet reshuffle. Of the 13 new politicians on the Government payroll, eight were women and four were black or minority ethnic (BME). She hailed a Government that “looks more like the country it serves”. Surely all industries and boards should look more like the country they serve? Yet Financial Services is a sector that is traditionally male-dominated. The Government is trying to support women working in the finance sector by introducing a financial charter that asks companies to pledge to set internal targets for women in senior management, and to publish progress reports. Studies have shown that women are the main breadwinners in 56% of households across the country3. Surely, women should have the option to have someone of the same gender to advise them? For a free initial consultation (whether you're male or female!), please call me on 01403 288078. 1
