FRONT PAGE STORY: 20 MPH SPEED LIMIT FOR VILLAGE ROADS? A public consultation on local road speeds ends this month. If West Sussex County Council approve the plan, the limit will be in force later this year. This new limit will be welcomed by may local residents who say the village has become a “rat run” for speeding drivers trying to avoid traffic on the A281. Full details on page 5.

Parish Point of View This month our ‘Parish Point of View’ is by Kate Bailey, Curate at St John’s Church. February is one of those in between months . . . still winter, but early flowers often start coming up, trying to lure us into thinking that Spring is on its way! We look forward to the longer days, more sunshine . . . and definitely the warmth! But the problem is that in thinking forward we are forgetting about the present. We are wishing away our lives, and not noticing the joys and blessings around us. In most years the Church is also guilty of doing this, but in 2017 Easter falls at the latest date possible in April, and so February instead of being the season of Lent is a pretty empty month on the calendar. I would like to suggest that this February we take time to enjoy where we are our village, our neighbours and maybe get to know someone we haven’t spoken to before. Get out on dry days and walk part of the area you’ve always been meaning to discover. And as you walk, cast your eyes around you at the beauty of the emerging nature, as well as the miracle of winter – the branches and twigs which look dead during the coldest months, but which are waiting for the optimum time to burst into new growth. It has been said that the Christian life is “pie in the sky when you die” – in other words only relevant after death . . . but I would refute this strongly – it’s the “steak on the plate whilst you wait”! Jesus Christ came to earth in order that ‘we may have life, and have it to the full.’ (John.10:10) We can enjoy our life right here and now as we centre our lives on Jesus Christ and enjoy the blessings of following him daily. 2017 has been designated by Chichester Diocese as the Year of the Bible. Not that the Bible isn’t important every year. Here at St. John’s Church we are putting on a special event on 1st April in conjunction with the organization “Walk through the Bible”. It looks as though it’s going to be a fantastic day, and information will be on our website soon. www.stjohnsbbh.org.uk . We look forward to welcoming you and learning with you. So enjoy each day in February – and live it to the fullness! With every blessing, Kate ——————————————————————St John’s Church, Broadbridge Heath, Church Road, RH12 3LD 01403 274114 info@stjohnsbbh.org.uk

Broadbridge Heath Football Club
The first team had a very good Christmas period which started on the 17 Dec with a 3-0 away win against Littlehampton Town and on the 28 Dec another top performance saw the team win 4-1 against a very useful Loxwood side. The New Year started with a difficult away trip to local rivals Horsham YMCA on the 3rd Jan and again the team came away with the points in a 2-1 victory, the winning goal scored in the 4th minute of time added on, however that result still has to be confirmed by the League Management Committee as the game ended prematurely following a late injury to the YM keeper. The team continued their excellent run of form 4-days later with another emphatic victory, 4-1 at home to Newhaven a result that sees them maintain 6th place in the Southern Combination League Premier Division. It's been fairly quite elsewhere with no games for the Reserves or Under 18s over the holiday period but the Juniors did manage to get some games in over the weekend of the 7th & 8th Jan before the snow and frost put an end to any fixtures the following week. Off the field the club are hoping that planning permission will soon be approved for their new football facilities on the land south of the existing Leisure Centre. Club Officials have been working on moving to our own facilities for the best part of 20 years, it's been a very long time coming but we are hopeful permission will be given in either February or March. The new facilities will include 3 pitches, a pavilion with changing rooms, kitchen, meeting room, bar and social area which when not used for football will be made available to the local community. There will be access to the site from Cook Road but this will only be for emergency vehicles, service vehicles, deliveries and for the disabled. Immediately to the north of the pavilion an additional 160 car parking spaces will be built when the Leisure Centre is demolished in early 2018, these spaces will be just a few metres from the pavilion and will allow pedestrians access to the site. If you would like to join our friendly team of volunteers, we are particularly seeking a new Treasurer and Secretary for our Junior Section, then we would really like to hear from you whether it's juniors or seniors we have a role waiting for you. Next first team fixtures as follows: Sat 28 Jan, Home v AFC Uckfield, K.O. 3.00 Sat 04 Feb, Away v Shoreham, K.O. 3.00 Sat 18 Feb, Home v Crawley Down Gatwick. K.O. 3.00 8

BBH Mag SPORT RUGBY The Barns Green ladies touch rugby team will play in their first tournament in January (training 7pm every Wednesday, outdoor hard courts Broadbridge Heath Sports Centre) new players would be most welcome-touch rugby is one of the fastest growing areas of the sport-great fun, high intensity, come and give us a look. BADMINTON New Leisure Centre will mean loss of “finest Badminton facilities” Badminton can serve the community in multiple ways as a catalyst to developing a healthier lifestyle for all players. It is a sport that suits players of all standards and abilities, and the costs of equipment and facilities are very reasonable but as part of the new Leisure Centre to be built in Broadbridge Heath, Horsham and Arun Badminton Club (HABC) will have to come to terms with losing the finest dedicated Badminton facilities in Sussex. History of HABC Horsham Arun Badminton Club (HABC) can trace its roots back to 1926 at which time there were two clubs in the Horsham area, Roffey Club and the Saracens Club (which later changed its name to the West Horsham Club). HABC was formed when these two clubs combined in 1954, playing at the Albion Hall in Horsham. Horsham District Council’s plans included the development of the venue, now Swan Walk Shopping Centre, and HABC relocated to an Atcost garage at the old Army camp at Broadbridge Heath. This infamous venue is widely remembered for its leaking roof and concrete floor. Following the move HABC embarked on a long-term fundraising campaign, eventually securing funds to upgrade the venue, including the luxuries of heating, an insulated floor and a lounge area. In the mid-1980’s HABC relocated again as once more Horsham District Council sold the venue for development, this time to Tesco Stores Ltd. This second relocation proved rather more beneficial for the club as it culminated in the building of Broadbridge Heath Leisure Centre including HABC’s purpose-built badminton hall, with private changing rooms and a lounge bar overlooking the courts. The facilities at HABC remain the finest dedicated badminton venue in Sussex. Peter Ballard, HABC Member ————————————————Horsham Arun Badminton Club – Keenagers Section
Friendly section of HABC for the over 55s. Meets every Monday and Friday morning from 9.30am to 12pm. Coffee & biscuits in our club room afterwards. Please ring Marianne for more details 01403 258086. 9
CRICKET
Broadbridge Heath Cricket Club
Byfleets Lane Broadbridge Heath West Sussex RH12 3PB www. broadbridgeheath.play-cricket.com Since the last edition, we have had our end-of-season awards evening which we mix with a Christmas get-together. Confusing, I know, but it seems to work. Anyway, our highest award, Clubman of the Year, went to Ian Stocker for his brilliant work leading the 2nd XI, coupled with his wheeling and dealing in the transfer market, bringing in some talented younger players. Tom Endacott was the overall 1st XI star with Grant Ovington doing the same for the 2nd XI. For the Juniors, Leo Harper was the star following his selection for the regional Northern Knights winter development programme. Previously, I have mentioned the stunning new cricket kit that is now on the market so we’ll soon have chance to see what Father Christmas has brought the players when indoor nets start shortly. I don’t have the exact date yet but they are likely to have started by the time you read this so have a look at our website for timings. It all takes place at Forest Boys School on Sundays. During early spring, the Club will continue with the clearing of the scrubland around the ground’s perimeter. We have already had much success and we should be able to finally make it through to the tennis courts shortly. Meanwhile, many readers out for crisp winter’s walk around the north of the village will have noticed the tremendous conservation work being done across the road from us in Byfleets Lane. Some initial improvements have already been carried out including levelling of the area and the original footpath has been reinstated. Future plans include sowing a wildflower seed mixture to create a nectar-rich wildflower meadow area that will be attractive to butterflies, bees and other insects; planting trees and shrubs to provide nest sites for birds and food for the caterpillars of butterflies and moths; and putting up bat boxes and bird nest boxes. As habitat improvements are made and wildlife gradually returns to this area (if only the moles would give us a break and go elsewhere), the Parish Council hope that local residents will enjoy visiting and walking around the area – and so do the Cricket, Stoolball and Tennis Clubs. MacDonald
The Financial Fairy Godmother of Broadbridge Heath
Don’t get ripped off & lose your pension! Did you see the BBC Panorama programme in July 2016, called Pension Rip-Offs Exposed? It revealed how some people have been duped into losing their pension funds. The problem usually started with someone ringing up out of the blue offering a ‘free pension review’. It often ended up with the pension being transferred to a scheme that sounded wonderful but was actually too good to be true. Once transferred, the monies are potentially afforded no regulatory protection, including coverage from the Financial Services Compensation Scheme. This means that if things go wrong there is very little which can be done in terms of recourse, corrective action and in respect of receiving any compensation for errors / mis-selling. One of my IFA friends has petitioned the government to ban cold calling about pensions, and it is now under consideration. What to do Note that a reputable IFA would never simply ring you out of the blue (although many will offer a free initial review of your pensions if you ask). If you receive a cold call, there’s no need to discuss or argue, simply hang up. Visit monetarysolutions.co.uk/blog, find the online version of this article and click the link to download booklets from The Pensions Regulator: 'How to avoid being taken in by pension scams', '10-step guide to protecting yourself from scams', plus a link to the petition mentioned above.
