2nd Broadbridge Heath Guides This month we finished the innovate skills builders badge completing an engineering project. The girls created small instruments that could pick up tiny objects from a hole in a shoe box (a bit like keyhole surgery). We played a war time wide game which involved the girls building shelters, practising their bandaging and creating a stretcher without any equipment, when the siren went off the girls then had emergency roles to full fill. One group guided another to the shelter, one made tea and the last group put out a candle flame using a syringe filled with water! These were the type of roles that Guides took on during the Second World War. We finished the term with mystery cooking (using covered tinned food) and a celebration evening which included silly games and pizza.
1st Broadbridge Heath Rainbows Rainbows continued the term with a fruit shop. The girls had a set amount of money and planned which fruit they would like to buy to make their fruit kebabs. We finished the term making Christmas cards and a Pot of Gold celebration which marks the end of a girl’s time at Rainbows before moving onto Brownies. Our waiting list for Rainbows continues to grow at an alarming rate. If you can spare an hour a week or would like more information regarding volunteering please contact: Sharon Newman District Commissioner ggclemsfold@gmail.com or visit girlguiding.org.uk. BBH Mag Sport
News from local sports clubs.
If you would like to publish your sports news in this magazine please contact the Editor by email: bbh.mag@gmail.com FOOTBALL Broadbridge Heath Football Club Most teams had a break during the Christmas and New Year holiday but that was not the case with our first team who had difficult away matches at Loxwood, Horsham YMCA and Pagham. The first derby match took place on Boxing Day morning when we travelled the short distance to much improved Loxwood and in front of a crowd in excess of 100 we came away with a well deserved 2-1 victory. Next up just 3-days later was an even shorter trip for another derby match this time against high-flying Horsham YMCA, many people's favourites to win the division, and in an evenly contested match Heath won the game 1-0 with a world class strike from the edge of the penalty area by George Cousins in the 93rd minute, a goal which sent a large proportion of the 150+ crowd back to the Village Centre Social Club with a smile on our face as wide as the goal posts. Our first match in the New Year was another tough encounter against the Lions of Pagham, always one of the stronger teams in the division and rare for us to come away with anything apart from a football lesson on how to play the game but in a very evenly contested match the game ended in a goal-less draw. So 7 points from a possible 9 against some really good opposition was way better than any of us predicted and it goes to show how much the team has improved this season. Off the field, we're still waiting to find out when our new facilities will be ready, the pavilion is complete, the main ground is ready (apart from the pitch) we have even negotiated an agreement with Ascot Care for stadium naming rights but we still don't know when the pitch will be safe enough to play matches on. When you consider the Section 106 Agreement which identified new sports pitches and pavilion was signed off in October 2011 around the same time the District Council announced they were going to decommission and demolish the Leisure Centre. Public opinion managed to get the council to change their mind and today there is a brand new "state of the art" Leisure Centre enjoyed by people from all over the district and beyond but while the masses enjoy the new Leisure Centre, the Football Club are still waiting for developers Countryside to finish the open spaces and most importantly for us, a football pitch safe enough to play on, unbelievable really. First team fixtures for you to enjoy include: 19th Jan Home to Little Common K.O. 3.00 26th Jan Home to Chichester City K.O. 3.00 2nd Feb Away to Crawley Down K.O. 3.00 9th Feb Home to Lancing K.O. 3.00 For more information on Broadbridge Heath FC please visit our website at : www.bbh-fc.com 4
BOWLS
Horsham Indoor Bowls Club is located at bottom of Tesco car park at BBH. For the last two years we have literally been in the shadow of the New Leisure Centre suffering much disruption and inconvenience along the way. We welcome new members and invite local residents to pop in and look around or come and have a go at Bowls. We offer two free taster sessions for Short Mat on Wednesday mornings 10 to 12 noon and two free taster sessions for the longer form of bowls on Wednesday evenings from 7pm, both through to April 24th. No advance booking necessary. Licensed bar and restaurant. Free coaching available. Suitable for all ages. More info at: horshamdistrictindoorbowlsclub.co.uk ————————————————————————————————SHELLEY PRIMARY SCHOOL NEWS This term is, as ever, a busy one here at Shelley Primary School. We’re pleased to report that planning permission is being sought on behalf of West Sussex County Council to expand our school to two-form entry on our current site. Our leadership team and governors have worked with the local authority to assess the needs of the school community and to agree a proposed site plan that would meet these needs. This would include the construction of four further classrooms, a new nature area, meeting spaces, and reconfiguration of offices. Residents of the Broadbridge Heath community – both those whose children attend the school and those who have no involvement with us, were able to view the plans here on Wednesday 16th January when representatives from the school, contractor (Kier) and officers from the County Council were able to answer queries. Our children continue to be involved in our local community. Last term we worked alongside the Broadbridge Heath Gala Association to replace two trees on our village green, and also with Broadbridge Heath Parish Council. The Council asked the school if children could submit names for two new playgrounds in our local area and we’re pleased to report that two names have been selected. We’ll announce further details soon! This term we are continuing our work with the Parish Council. Mrs Knight, member of the Council, and her dog Lillee visited us in assembly to launch a competition. Children have been invited to design posters reminding everyone to take their litter home and to pick up dog mess, so that we can keep our environment clean. 5

We use a Facebook page and you can also email puttickdm@outlook.com, text 07867 387466 or go to BBH Pets Facebook direct. Hopefully one day, most pets throughout BBH will be registered enabling us to unite most lost pets and finding homes for strays. Currently, we have approximately 155 pets registered. At the moment, the main issues that pet owners are having, seems to be people feeding their cats thinking that they are strays. Please do not feed any cat that come to your property/garden but instead notify Cats Protection, RSPCA and/or BBH Pets if you think they are lost or even a stray. Then the cat can be reunited with their owners quickly or a new home quickly. Any pet can be registered, not just cats and dogs. Donna Puttick 6
Parish Point of View February is the month of LOVE – well it has Valentine’s Day in it, doesn’t it? The Bible talks about LOVE quite a lot, and Jesus in particular was keen to tell us that our responsibility is to show and share LOVE? Jesus tells a story about the Good Samaritan, which comes in answer to the question ‘Who is my neighbour’ after a rich young man has been reminded that his religious law asks of him to ‘ Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ And to ‘Love your neighbour as yourself.’ Mark 12:30-31. The moral of the story basically says your neighbour is the person who is seemingly least deserving of your love and help that you can find, whenever and wherever and whoever they are. There is an interpretation of this reading that goes like this: Love your neighbour: your homeless neighbour, your Muslim neighbour, your black neighbour, your gay neighbour, your white neighbour, your Christian neighbour, your atheist neighbour, your racist neighbour, your addicted neighbour…to which at this time I would add…..your neighbour who voted to remain in the EU, your neighbour who voted to leave the EU.…because if you love all of your neighbours and they love you we will want the very best for each other we can heal the divisions in our country that are every bit as deep as those between the Jews and the Samaritans of the original story. Broadbridge Heath is a very diverse and growing community. Of course we are going to think differently to our neighbours, because we are all individuals – but it boils down to the basic fact that we are ALL human beings living in the same village, whether it’s the old or new part – we are all neighbours here together. With the whole world only a social media message away then by default everybody in the world becomes our neighbour. So in this month of LOVE – how are you going to share and show LOVE to your neighbours? Let it begin at home, in the street where you live, in our community – and may LOVE blossom for us all here this year. God Bless,
Revd Kate Bailey, Curate, St John’s Church, Broadbridge Heath, Church Road, RH12 3LD office@stjohnsbbh.org.uk www.stjohnsbbh.org.uk Children, families and people of all ages are welcome. 7
This lovely photo shows the first WI to be set up in the UK. It was in Llanfair PG, North Wales in 1915. The first WI in England was in Singleton, West Sussex and is still thriving today. As more WI’s opened in Sussex, neighbouring WIs decided to meet together and this became the first ‘Federation of WIs’. All of the 6,300 WIs now belong to a local Federation and there are 69 of them - each with a regional office (ours is a grade two listed house in Chichester). So, as the oldest county federation, this year we are celebrating 100 years of the West Sussex Federation of WIs 1919 - 2019 In addition to all the varied activities at local WIs, there will be lots of regional events to celebrate our Centenary, including a Centenary Lunch at Arundel, a Centenary Musical Evening at Haywards Heath, an afternoon at Fontwell Races and, as I told you last month, West Sussex WIs will be busy planting for our ‘100 Years, 100 Oak Trees’ project Northwood. Broadbridge Heath WI is 70 this year, having begun in 1949 but there are other Centenary firsts to be celebrated in 2019. This is the first issue of Home and Country, the WI Journal, published in March 1919. It’s not very clear but the photo on the front cover shows Queen Mary (who was president of Sandringham WI) at a WI exhibition. And did you know that the WI is responsible for what are now known as Country Markets? The first was also set up in 1919 in Sussex. I’ll tell you more about that next time so look out for your copy of BBH Magazine and in the meantime, if you’d like to come along to any of our events, you’ll be very welcome. We meet every second Tuesday at 2.30 in St John’s Community Hall, Church Road. Or you can contact us for more information about what we have planned. Our details are on the back cover. 8
A month in to 2019, are your New Year resolutions still intact and going strong? This year I decided not to attempt another… Let’s face it, they never last more than a few weeks. It’s just another thing to make the January blues even bluer! So we, The Broadbridge Bombshells (while patiently waiting for the joys of spring), decided to add a bit of colour and fun to the grey cold days. All girls together learning some decorating tips for our Valentines themed cakes, courtesy of professional cake maker Caroline at Sugared Pumpkin Cake Company, Horsham. We just need to decide if we actually give our stunning cakes to our loved ones, or secretly keep them for ourselves, after all there are no new year resolutions to keep!
At our February meeting the Bombshells will be trying their hands, and tummies, at Belly Dancing, after Christmas and my Valentines cake I definitely have the figure for it! Again we will be in the hands of the professionals, otherwise it could be a very sorry sight… If you fancy having a go why not join us on Tuesday 26th February, 8pm at St Johns Church Hall. If you can’t make that date Carina (the professional) runs classes twice a week at Glynde Place Dance Studios, Horsham. Check out her Facebook page, Dancing Rose and The Sultans Sirens As you can tell from our monthly articles, we are always up to something fun and interesting. We are a group of ladies, all different and with different talents, but come together on the last Tuesday of every month for a laugh and to experience something new. Don’t be shy, come along and meet us! St Johns Church Hall, Church Road, Broadbridge Heath, 8pm. Local choir support calls for routine test to prevent baby deaths: Risks of “Strep B” infection. The Emery Ensemble didn’t perform a Christmas Concert this year as two of our ladies were expecting babies in the autumn. While Amanda’s baby Aria is healthy, unfortunately Beth & Helen’s baby Isaac died at birth due to overwhelming group B strep infection. Unfortunately, although the bacteria that causes this is carried by 40% of the population this is not something that is routinely tested for in pregnant women despite 35 babies a year dying from this and a further 1 baby a week being left with catastrophic brain injuries after 'surviving' this infection. The test costs just £11. We are raising funds for GBSS (Group B Strep Support) as no family should have to go through this. Too many babies are lost when it could be a different story. TOASTIES YOUTH CLUB Last term at Toasties Youth Club we had a busy but fantastic time with approximately 40 young people attending each week. There was Sumo Wrestling, Hungry Hippos, DJ Workshop, Arts & Crafts, Board Games, Snooker, Table Tennis, Air Hockey, Table Football, Quiet and Social Rooms plus loads of group games. In our tuck shop, toasties was reintroduced which the young people love and where the name of our Youth Club came from. All this wouldn't have happened if it wasn't for our fantastic team of Volunteers who live all over the village as well as our amazing Young Leaders who work hard in our tuck shop and have also organised some games for the young people. Toasties Youth Club started in our village 6 years ago at the Scouts Hall by Dan Fairchild, the Youth Worker Team Leader at Horsham Matters. Unfortunately, on the 18th January, we'll be saying goodbye to Dan as he will be leaving Horsham Matters to take up a new position in Leatherhead. All of us at Toasties Youth Club would like to say a giant thank you to Dan for all his hard work and for giving our village a Youth Club. Donna Puttick, Lead Youth Worker. Is it time to review your holdings? The main topic of conversation still seems to be Brexit. It’s 2½ years since the Leave vote on 23rd June 2016 and we still don’t know what will happen next, but we should know by the end of March. Last month, I discussed our thoughts about making an investment in the current climate, but what’s our advice for funds already invested? Although the FTSE 100* has been higher than it is now, it is still higher than it was following the referendum. However the pound, already at an all time low in July 2016 against the euro, is now even weaker. There will be more fluctuations to come, so here are some considerations for investors: Investments can be held in different asset classes (ie cash, shares, bonds & gilts, property) and parts of the world (UK, Europe, North America, Japan, Emerging Markets). To help cushion the effect of a downturn of any individual asset class, our approach is and always has been to spread investments across a range of holdings. In this way, when one area suffers a drop there are other areas to compensate. We base our recommendations on our client’s appetite for risk and capacity for loss. You may wish to review your portfolio or pension with your financial adviser to check it continues to be invested appropriately and remains suitable for your current circumstances and ongoing requirements. The information in this article is for information only and must be considered as financial advice. We always recommend that you seek independent financial advice before making any financial decisions. The value of your investment can go down as well as up and you may get back less than you have put in. *London Stock Exchange 14 July 2016 close 6,654.47; 22 May 2018 7877.45; 11 Jan 2019 open 6942.87
