Paddy’s Page Revd. Paddy Beresford Vicar of St. John’s Church Broadbridge Heath In the “X files”, Mulder says “when science can’t offer an explanation, can’t we turn to the fantastic?” Scully replies “What I find fantastic is any notion that there is anything beyond science.” Many would say the same – at least, we live in an age where we demand a rational explanation for everything. After all, we’re bombarded with a lot of clever stuff these days that finding the real from the fake is a full-time job for some people and to be the victim of fake is often a costly matter. Stephen Hawkins in his conclusion of “A brief History of Time” says: “The usual scientific approach of constructing a mathematical model cannot answer the question of why there should be a universe for the model to describe. Why does the universe go to all the bother of existing?” Science just can’t answer that question, and the result is that the scientific mind often doesn’t bother to look further than the present, because the present is at least, observable. The future is not. But people with faith are different, because God has revealed certain facts about an eternal future that is far superior to anything we know here. We are therefore a hopeful people whose eyes gaze naturally on the ‘now’ but also on an exciting future. For many, the future is a scary domain, it creates a disquiet. But people of faith are not only happy to hear what God promises but have a peace about the future – even their own death. At the end of last year I took a funeral of a lady in Somerset. The last time I had visited the 94 year old ex-missionary school teacher in Uganda, was a few years previously when I was in a church down there and as I entered her room she said “You’ll never guess what I’m doing… I’m planning my funeral service, the hymns you’ll sing, the Bible readings, who will do it all, and, naturally I want you to lead it – it must be a joyful, hope-inspiring service!” She had no fear of looking into the future – she knew her destiny and her faith was rock solid. The philosopher Rene Descartes, rather hedging his bets, said that when you die as an unbeliever and discover that you should have believed – that’s awful – but if, when you die there is nothing – you won’t even know that there’s nothing - yet you will have lived the best possible life of inner peace and hope on earth. BROADBRIDGE HEATH GALA ASSOCIATION MEETING 11TH FEBRUARY 2016

For the first time in at least 30 years, the Gala Association did not hold a bonfire and firework display in the village last year. This was basically due to lack of manpower and money. Members of the Gala Association were determined to put on an event to try and bring everyone in the village together and so it was decided to hold a Scarecrow Competition in September. This proved to be extremely popular and we have already had several people asking if it will be repeated this year. However, due to a dwindling number of committee members even this event is in danger of not going ahead in 2016. If you are interested in helping with the Scarecrow Competition and maybe reviving the bonfire and firework display please come along to a meeting on Thursday 11th February 2016 at 8.00pm in the Village Centre when we will be discussing the future of the Gala Association. The commitment we are asking for is not great, but it will make a real difference to your village. For further details contact Anne Ryan - anne@theryansweb.co.uk or Viv Edwards – viv@rh12.co.uk.

BBH Mag front page headline: CALL FOR A MORE ACCURATE MAP OF THE NEW HOUSES AT WICKHURST GREEN Hundreds of new houses have been built on the Wickhurst Green development; and there are many more being built. How do we know? Because our volunteers who distribute the BBH Mag are discovering new houses every month! We’ve also been contacted by residents who say there’s a need for an up to date and accurate map of local roads. So; here’s the plan... The BBH Mag team are working with local residents to compile a map which will be published in this magazine. If you would like to help with this project, or you live on a road which is not yet on a map, you can contact the BBH Mag by email; bbh.mag@gmail.com 9

Broadbridge Heath Rainbows, Brownies, Guides and Rangers. Our Rainbows, Brownies, Guides and Rangers have just returned after the Christmas holidays so we asked the girls to reflect on the activities they have taken part in and Girlguiding in general: 1st Broadbridge Heath Rainbows At the beginning of this term the Rainbows took part in a Rainbow Chat, the leaders asked the girls what activities they had enjoyed. The Rainbows responded: “Making an owl out of leaf prints” and “straw painting”, “Going to Drusillas with other Rainbows” and “having a really fun day at a local Girlguiding activity site - doing circus skills was the best!” 2nd Broadbridge Heath Guides and Rangers What guiding means to me: Guiding, simply put, is like a family. Patrols and units make up the closer relations, Girlguiding UK and WAGGGS, the more distant. We are brought together by certain key principles and morals, and we use said principles and morals to help build ourselves as people, to assist in our communities, and to do a sprinkling of good for the world. Look back to an event such as the remembrance parade back in November. The Guides, Brownies, Rainbows and Rangers of Horsham marched as one in support of a common cause, remembering the fallen service men and women of our nation. I know 2016 will have more moments like this in store for our Guiding family. Shelley Primary School As you may be aware national Safer Internet Day (SID) takes place on 9th February this year. The theme for 2016 is “Play your part for a better internet!” and will incorporate a social media campaign asking celebrities and the general public to “Play your part… #shareaheart”. The children at Shelley School will be involved in various activities relating to internet safety throughout the day. As mentioned previously, we will also be running an internet safety presentation in the near future – the content of the session will cover young people’s activities online but you do not have to have children at Shelley in order to attend; simply register your interest via email or phone and we will keep you informed. Finally, as our long, wet winter hopefully moves towards spring at the beginning of next month, keep your eyes peeled around the village for Harry Potter, the Gruffalo, Alice in Wonderland and plenty of others as our World Book Day dressing up day takes place on 4th March! 1st Broadbridge Heath Scout Group Once again Broadbridge Heath Scout Group had a good year and we continue to thrive. In the Autumn Warnham Scout Group was unfortunately disbanded and several of their members joined our Group and have settled in well and with the growth of the village our numbers continue to rise. The Beaver Scout section had a busy year, with their numbers higher than ever, but ably run by 2 leaders and 2 young helpers. They hiked in the pouring rain in Leechpool Woods, enjoyed a campfire evening, a trip on the Wey and Arun Canal and worked towards their badges in IT, global challenge where they developed an awareness of the man-made and natural worlds, and international badge, where they learned about Scouting in other countries, flags, food and language, amongst other varied activities. They entered the village Scarecrow competition and won their section with Bob and his minions, a minion being made by each of the Beaver Scouts. The Cub Scout section runs, with the assistance of a parent rota, and has a full agenda of cooking, games, ice skating, mastering the climbing wall at K2 and a raft of other activity and challenge badge work. The Cub Scouts made a scarecrow in the summer which they entered into the Cranleigh Show scarecrow competition. The Scouts had a very busy year maintaining and racing go-carts, learning about the Battle of Britain, designing their own paper planes, building Airfix Spitfires, learning about flight and many more exciting activities. They also won their section in the village scarecrow competition. In addition they managed to fit their activity and challenge badge work into their busy evenings! The Beaver Scouts meet in the Scout Hall on Tuesday evenings 5.00 – 6.15pm The Cub Scouts meet also on Tuesday evenings 6.30 – 8.00pm The Scouts meet on Monday evenings 6.30 – 8.30pm If you have a child who may be interested in joining us or you think that you could help out with any section or activity please contact GSL Paula on 07894 616549. We also hire the hall for children’s parties and other activities, for this please contact Pete on 01403 240845. Sandy Mursell 13

BBH Mag SPORT Broadbridge Heath Cricket Club Byfleets Lane Broadbridge Heath West Sussex RH12 3PB I know it’s winter outside (Love Unlimited/Barry White 1973) but cricket goes on indoors. The Club has a team in the Crawley 6-a-side League and they had a fabulous recent win over Sussex Premier League Club Three Bridges with Neil Charman being undefeated on 62. Whilst that competitive League continues, the Club’s own indoor practice nets start at Forest Boys School on Sunday 31st January. Timings are 10.00 till 12.00 for adults and 1.00pm to 3.00pm for juniors, all at a small cost each week. If you would like to come along and dust off some old skills or give the game a try, then contact Chairman Tim Wells at timbo66@btinternet.com for adults and Fred Bridges at fb400@btinternet.com for juniors. Fred already does some coaching at Shelley CP School so will be known already by many youngsters in the village. The Club previously had a thriving Junior Section and many of those then youngsters are in the adult teams now, including the Ist XI captain. So it’s our aim to grow the Junior Section again to its former strength Don’t forget to have a look at the Club’s website and on Facebook. http://broadbridgeheath.play-cricket.com/home/home.asp

The Financial Fairy Godmother of Broadbridge Heath

Divorce and Financial Settlements February is traditionally the month of love, but, unfortunately for many couples, the beginning of the year is when they decide it is time to part. In fact, the media named 4th January 2016 as national ‘Divorce Day’* because the first working Monday of the year is when family lawyers receive a surge of enquiries about divorce. Financial Settlements A major sticking point is the financial settlement, as it can be so hard to agree which assets should go to which partner. The financial settlement has often been agreed before either party visits a financial adviser, usually to help enforce a pension sharing order. However, we at Monetary Solutions are increasingly seeing people at an earlier stage. For many people, the biggest fear is how they are going to manage financially on their own. As all of our advisers are female, we have a high number of women approaching us for help in their divorce, although many men prefer our approach too. With your permission, we will work closely with your solicitor. We can help you and your solicitor to see the effects of different alternative financial settlements: what opportunities you will still have, and what challenges will need to be overcome. Whilst we can’t promise to make your ex any more co-operative, we can hold your hand through the process and help you to know how whatever settlement you agree will affect you when it’s over. *Resolution website Jan 2016
