2nd Broadbridge Heath Guides and Rangers Over the first weekend in December the Guides went on a winter residential at Horsham Guide HQ. The Guides decided they wanted a bake off! The Guides made bread on Friday evening in the shape of animals. The animal theme continued when they made cakes on Saturday morning. To have a break from baking the girls had fun at an inflatable session at The Pavillions. On our return we made pizzas for dinner and finished the day with Crystal Maze challenges. The final baking competition on Sunday morning was to make and decorate biscuits. Congratulations to all the winners. Next term the Guides are looking forward to the London Monopoly Challenge in March, trying activities from our forthcoming new programme and Thinking Day activities.

News from the GALA ASSOCIATION
Santa event raised £788 The 3rd of December saw Santa take to the BBH streets on the first Sleigh Procession in over 20 years and WOW, what a response we had! Parading through the streets of the old and new village, hundreds of you came out to wave the big man through and didn’t hold back when it came to popping some pennies in the buckets. We were truly overwhelmed. Thanks to your generosity we raised £788 to pump back into future community events, hopefully including the fete in 2018. (Watch this space) We considered the event to be hugely successful, but know there is work to be done including time keeping and clarity of route. We hear you and will look to build this feedback into next years event. In the meantime, please like BBH Gala Association on Facebook to keep on top of all our latest news and activities. The AGM will be held on 9th January at the Village Centre at 7.30pm. If you wanted to join or offer your support for future events please do come along. Wishing you a very Happy New Year! ——————————————————————————————————

Friends of Shelley School (FOSS)
As we approach the New Year FOSS can reflect on a December of fun. Our “Santa’s Workshop” Christmas Bazaar was a huge success, and the feedback from those who attended has been overwhelmingly positive. Huge thanks to all those who helped, either by giving up your time, your donations, or your hard-earned money on the night. FOSS also ventured into territories new with the launch of our first Film Night. ‘Father Christmas’ (Raymond Briggs) and “The Muppet’s Christmas Carol” (celebrating its 25th year) played to a lively, happy, and popcorn-and-lollipop-filled audience. Feedback has been really favourable and very useful, thus ensuring that that showing was definitely the first of many to come! In 2018, we will be funding various new projects within the school, including both environmental and sporting as well as traditional classroom-based, and continuing to fund those already active. We hope that everyone has enjoyed a happy and hopefilled New Year, and look forward to your continued encouragement of our efforts to raise funds to enhance our lovely local village school. FOSS is a registered charity, and there are currently nine hard-working trustees. We all have strong connections to the school, and are united by a desire to both promote Shelley School as a valuable and essential asset of the village, and also to raise as much money as we can to help offset the current lack of investment in West Sussex schools. Parish Point Of View John Bailey Licensed Lay Minister at St. John’s Church TRUE GRIT When asked by American waitresses if I wanted grits with my breakfast order, I always declined. The term conjured up grim tales of hardship from the Old South, where grits were the traditional accompaniment to unlovely austerity foods like chicken wings or chitlins. I didn’t taste grits for myself until the year we were guests in a Virginian home and couldn’t really refuse. But from that point I found myself curiously drawn to their culinary possibilities as well as their dark association with the underside of the American dream. Grits are coarsely milled hominy: maize kernels that have been treated with lye to release the nutrients locked up in their fibres. You boil them in water or milk until you are left with a glutinous paste studded with gritty particles. It’s more appetising than it probably sounds, particularly when swamped with melted butter, and much more nutritious than ordinary ‘sweetcorn’. This was a staple food for struggling Americans over centuries, but nowadays it’s on the menu of pretty well every breakfast diner you come to. Grits are incredibly versatile. You can eat them sweet, you can eat them savoury. When cold they set firm like polenta, and can be sliced and griddled. And there are websites to which the many people with a real grits fetish submit all kinds of unusual recipes. In essence, grits provide a nutritious base that takes on the flavour of whatever you stir in. Cheese grits taste of nothing but cheese. Maple syrup grits taste of nothing but… you get the idea. And in the humble bowl of grits I see a surprisingly apt picture of the post-modern church: an increasingly neutral base into which people stir whatever seasoning or sweetening they fancy: church with spiritual gifts; church with social action; church with Alpha Course; church with ritual; church with electric guitars… In each case, Christians and non-Christians alike can forget that the nutrition is more important than the added flavouring. As the New Year unfolds, may we each have a chance to reflect on what the idea of church means to us. Are we letting our flavour preferences distract us from the presence of Jesus that should be at the church’s heart? Are we letting the aftertaste of one particular church with an unappetising flavour come between us and what could be an enriching part of our lives? Wishing you a blessed year.

BBH Mag Sport
News from local sports clubs.
If you would like to publish your sports news in this magazine please contact the Editor by email: bbh.mag@gmail.com FOOTBALL Broadbridge Heath Football Club Looking back over the year there's been many pros and cons. The first team completed the 2016-2017 season in 8th position in the Southern Combination Premier Division our highest ever finish; the reserve team did even better by ending their season as Champions of the Reserve Division for the first time ever. This season has also gone pretty well so far with the first team entering five cup competitions and in the FA Vase and the Sussex Senior Cup we went further than ever before succumbing to better opposition in the later stages but still enjoyable while it lasted. Another plus for the club is the number of teams and players playing week in week out which continues to grow, we now have eleven junior sides providing football for players from 6 to 16 years of age and four seniors sides, first, reserve, under 18s and veterans. We have also recently been awarded the FA Charter Standard again having passed the annual health check. This is not an easy thing to do for a club of our size with 45 people in a role of manager, assistant manager or coach. To qualify each team must have someone trained in FA Emergency Aid and every youth team (age 18 and under) must have at least one person with an FA Level One coaching certificate. In addition all managers and coaches of the youth teams must have a valid Criminal Records Check and a valid Safeguarding Children's certificate. But the biggest pro during the course of the year was getting planning permission for our new ground away from the Leisure Centre with three grass pitches, a pavilion, stands and floodlights, a new permanent home for the club is something that current and past club members have been pushing for since the club was founded in 1919 and finally with this planning permission we knew our dreams would soon become a reality. Just how soon that will be is what we find really frustrating. Countryside are responsible for building the access road and pavillion, last year they told us if we got planning permission in February work would start in April and finish in October. We did get planning permission in February but nothing
www.pitchero.com/clubs/broadbridgeheathfc 10
happened in April, May or June and in July we had another meeting with Countryside and Horsham District Council and at that meeting we were told by the developers that they anticipated work would start late September early October and finish in March 2018. In late October we were told work would definitely start in November but the completion date had now moved to the end of June. When nothing happened in November we were told that work would definitely start on the 11th December but the completion date had now been pushed out to 4th August, when we questioned the likelihood of them really starting on that date, given their track record, we were told that it was 100 per cent certain. At the time of writing it's now the 15th December and still nothing has happened and probably won't now until the New Year. Meanwhile if you're looking for something to do over the Christmas and New Year period, why not come along and support The Bears. Our Christmas and News Years Fixtures are as follows: •27 Dec Away v Horsham YMCA, K.O. 7.30 •30 Dec Home v Crawley Down Gatwick, K.O. 3.00 •06 Jan Away v Loxwood, K.O. 3.00 ———————————————————–————————-—————————

TRAFFIC CALMING MEASURES IN THE VILLAGE
As part of the current WSCC IWP programme of works we will shortly be undertaking Phase 2 of the improvement works implementing the traffic calming features along Billingshurst Road and Old Guildford Road through the village of Broadbridge Heath. These works will involve: New mini roundabout on Billingshurst Road at the junction with Shelley Drive. •
•
Village Centre improvements, adjacent to the post office.
Billingshurst Road/Old Guildford Road, advisory cycle lanes and centreline removal. •
•
Sleets Road mini roundabout improvements
In order to protect the public and our workforce and minimise disruption to traffic the works will commence from Tuesday 2nd January 2018 for approximately 15 weeks; subject to favourable weather conditions. These works will be carried out under temporary traffic signals from 07:00 to 17:00hrs each day and where road closures are required localised traffic diversions will be in place. Letter drop will be carried out to the affected frontages along the extent of the scheme and Advance warning signs will be erected in the local area to inform road users of the proposed works.

I really need to shed some weight after all the Christmas festivities. As you can see, our afternoon tea at Random Hall (which seems like ages ago now) was seriously indulgent and the WI Christmas party in December was great fun as always. We then kicked off the New Year with our annual lunch at the bowls club and we’re now looking forward to starting our 2018 programme with a film afternoon in February (I’ll go easy on the popcorn and ice cream...) Talking of February, in the last issue, I asked whether anyone would be interested in an evening WI. Wow! What a response. Seems that there are plenty of you who’d love to join the WI but can’t do afternoons. Well, why didn’t you say? The WI is nothing if not welcoming and inclusive so put this in your diary: 7.30pm Monday 19 February. We’ll be at St John’s Community Hall (next door to the church) in Church Road Broadbridge Heath, until 9.30pm, and it will be an informal open meeting so you can come along and find out more about what the WI has to offer, as well as telling us what you want from your WI. We’ll lay on some drinks and nibbles so it might be an idea to let us know you’re planning on coming so we don’t run out – judging from the interest so far, it looks like there’ll be quite a party! You can email: wi.broadbridgeheath@talktalk.net or call: Wendy Griffin 01403 217152 or Jacqui King 01403 754718. We’ll also have a WI adviser on hand to give a short talk about the WI and to answer all your questions. ......And for those of you who are free in the afternoons, we’ll still be having our usual afternoon meetings every second Tuesday at 2.30. Here’s another thought: at our meetings, we often see all of you mums on your way to Shelley School to pick up the children and one of our members said “If our meetings were earlier, those mums could come to the meeting and still have time for the school run....” So what do you think about that? Let us know on the email or numbers above. 13

The Financial Fairy Godmother
Reflections
of Broadbridge Heath
In January, we often reflect on last year with a view towards planning for the next. 2017 did not have an easy start, with terror attacks at Westminster Bridge, Borough Market and the Ariana Grande concert, followed by the Grenfell Tower disaster. Article 50 of the Treaty on European Union was invoked on 29 March, followed by Theresa May's snap election on 18 April. I wonder if she now regrets this? Despite all the bad news and uncertainty, the FTSE has gone up very slightly. It started 2017 just under 7200, and at the time of writing stands just below 7450. The Dow and the Nikkei indices have also seen growth this year (as of 11 Dec 2017). In October it was reported that the housing market picked up in August, and borrowing by home movers had been the highest since March 2016 when transactions were boosted by the imminent increase in stamp duty. What's more, re-mortgaging over the last 12 months had been higher than in any other period since 2009*. However, this was before the mortgage rate increase announced in November – the first for more than a decade. So what are my predictions for 2018? We will have to wait and see what this will mean. When making any financial decision, you need to look at ALL variables rather predictions, and factor in both positives and negatives. *CML 12 Oct 2017
