1st Broadbridge Heath Rainbows For Remembrance the rainbows painted poppies on pebbles. The rainbows joined the brownies, guides and Horsham division rangers for a short Remembrance service before heading to the village cenotaph to lay a wreath and the pebbles. The girls have learnt how to dress for different occasions and made Christmas cards and decorations. At the end of this term, we are unfortunately saying goodbye to Pippa one of our leaders. We would like to take this opportunity to thank Pippa for all that she has done for rainbows over the years.
2nd Broadbridge Heath Brownies ‘For the last few meetings of 2021 2nd BBH Brownies has been busy including designing a new Brownie uniform with newspaper, learning a new strategy game that involved collecting post it notes from other teams, and of course our Christmas crafts! We worked really hard to make a reindeer bauble, a tealight lantern and an elf hat! Looking forward to what adventures 2022 brings!’ 2nd Broadbridge Heath Guides For Remembrance the guides sewed poppy badges and painted poppy jars. They were all totally engaged in learning the basics of sign language and created rainbows using sugar and water - it’s always a great relief when a science experiment works! We finished this term with our first residential in two years! The guides enjoyed a weekend away in Henfield which included crafts, scavenger hunt on the Downslink, a snow ball fight and lots of cooking!

We wanted to make our last get together of the year special so while everyone tucked into Christmas cake and mince pies, some members of the committee surprised everyone by putting on a little panto! We performed a short, one act play, called “A Charming Affair” by Robert Scott. Picture the scene: Snow White and Cinderella meet by chance in a coffee shop. They haven’t seen each other for a long time and are both now married. The girls boast about their wonderful lives and of how they have both been lucky enough to marry rich, handsome men – although sadly, because they are Princes, their husbands seem to have to spend a lot of time away slaying dragons! Their pleasant chatter deteriorates as the girls try to outdo each other and they end up hurling insults before being interrupted by the arrival of newly wed, Sleeping Beauty. You can probably guess what happens when they finally work out that they are all married to the same Prince Charming! The play closes with Cinderella asking Snow White whether she still happens to have her step mother’s poisoned apple….. Have a happy and healthy New Year and if you’d like to join us in 2022, do get in touch. Broadbridge Heath WI email: BBHWI@uwclub.net or phone Maureen: 01403 268963 4
Broadbridge Bombshells WI Catch Up With The Broadbridge Bombshells WI We have had a very busy November, first creating delicious Christmas bakes and mulled wine for the BBH Christmas Fayre. A big thank you to everyone who came and purchased a mince pie and festive tipple from us. We really enjoy these events and are keeping everything crossed that we will be back baking for the BBH villagers at the annual summer fete. We also held our Mixology, Christmas Tips and Glass Painting meeting in November which was perfect to ease us into the busy festive season. We pre-ordered fabulously decadent cocktails from The Bottled Bartender, and whilst we sipped we swapped our tried and tested tips for making Christmas as stress-free as possible and tried our hands at glass painting. Our next meeting, January 25th, will be ‘Colour Me Beautiful’ where speaker Kathy will be giving us advice on what colours we should be wearing to suit our complexion. Our meetings are held at St John’s Church Hall, 8pm on every last Tuesday of the month, but we also get together frequently for other social events such as coffee mornings, book club discussions and cocktail club. We also have access to additional meetings and activities hosted by other local WI’s.

Rev. Dr. Mark Lavender, Vicar, St John’s Church, Broadbridge Heath.
Ring Out, Wild Bells Ring out, wild bells, to the wild sky, The flying cloud, the frosty light: The year is dying in the night; Ring out, wild bells, and let him die. Ring out the old, ring in the new, Ring, happy bells, across the snow: The year is going, let him go; Ring out the false, ring in the true. Ring out the grief that saps the mind For those that here we see no more; Ring out the feud of rich and poor, Ring in redress to all mankind. Ring out a slowly dying cause, And ancient forms of party strife; Ring in the nobler modes of life, With sweeter manners, purer laws.
Rev. Dr. Mark Lavender Ring out the want, the care, the sin, The faithless coldness of the times; Ring out, ring out my mournful rhymes But ring the fuller minstrel in. Ring out false pride in place and blood, The civic slander and the spite; Ring in the love of truth and right, Ring in the common love of good. Ring out old shapes of foul disease; Ring out the narrowing lust of gold; Ring out the thousand wars of old, Ring in the thousand years of peace. Ring in the valiant man and free, The larger heart, the kindlier hand; Ring out the darkness of the land, Ring in the Christ that is to be.
This poem, published in 1850 by Tennyson portrays the mood that many of us may be in at the end of most years and maybe in particular 2021. It was a year that promised so much and yet with the on-going pandemic and associated restrictions delivered little. And so as we enter a new year there is a desire to get rid of the “grief that saps the mind” and “old shapes of foul disease” in order to focus on the hope of “redress to all mankind”. And Tennyson gives a hint at where we can look for that hope and it is in God, in Christ. And as we have spent time over Christmas perhaps thinking about that nativity scene and what it means, know this – that scene is the beginning of hope for our nation and for the world. That scene depicts God is with us, that he chose to be in the midst of his creation and he is still with us today and he offers us hope for a new dawn and an end to suffering and pain - a light in the darkness. Why not make a choice to put behind you today all that was negative about last year – “the want, the care, the sin” and choose to ring in the “nobler modes of life.” Let’s spend 2022 seeking to love more, celebrate truth and protect peace. Happy New Year! 7

Dear Residents, We would like to wish all our residents all the very best for the year ahead. As we embark on a new year, there are a number of things to look forward to for the Parish Council. In December we finally completed the legal transfer of the Parish Office and so work is underway to set it up as a working office and community space. Once it is operational, our meetings will take place in the new office. Residents are warmly invited to attend meetings—all details may be found on our website. Unfortunately our December meeting was cancelled due to health and safety concerns related to increasing Covid cases. Our next meeting is on Monday 10th January, the agenda for which will be published by Wednesday 5th January. It is expected that the legal transfers of the various parcels of land on the new developments will occur during 2022, adding to the areas for which the Parish Council is responsible. We hope everyone received a copy of our Winter newsletter during December and that you found it informative. The newsletter explained that we would soon be recruiting and on the following pages you will find details of 2 current opportunities to work with the Parish Council. We also have 2 councillor vacancies. Being a councillor can be a very rewarding way of contributing to your community - If you would like to find out more, please contact us Each month we will be introducing our Parish councillors, and we start off this month introducing Cllr Christine Knight, Chair of our Recreation Committee and Personnel Committee. As always, if you have any ideas, suggestions or concerns do please get in touch with us. We would love to hear from you, Lucinda (Clerk) and Olivia (Assistant Clerk) Please continue to view our Website and Facebook page for updates, meeting and contact details. We will share further BBHPC news in the next issue. 9
MEET YOUR COUNCILLORS Each month during 2022 we will be introducing one of our Parish Councillors. We start this month with Cllr Christine Knight.
My name is Christine Knight and I have been a Parish Councillor for Broadbridge Heath for 6 years. With my husband, Nick, I have lived in the village for 18 years. We have a Westie called Lillee, and you may have seen me walking her round the village or litter-picking in my high-viz jacket, or more recently, putting up the poppies for November’s Remembrance. When I retired from my job with West Sussex County Council (I was a headteacher for 20 years!), with some time on my hands, I decided I wanted to give something back to the community. I saw an advert for a Parish Councillor vacancy on the parish noticeboard at the One Stop shop, applied, and the rest as they say, ‘is History’! I am now the chair of both the Recreation Committee and the Personnel Committee, and hope that my past experience gives me some degree of expertise to assist my fellow councillors in decision making. The role of councillor can be frustrating, especially when issues arise that as a Parish Council we have no power to influence, as they are in areas that either Horsham District Council or West Sussex County Council have jurisdiction over. However, in many instances, we can act, and it is very rewarding to see issues resolved, or plans come to fruition. The Top Common Nature Area and the new playground at The Ducky are two successful projects I have been involved with. We have many exciting plans for further developments in the village, and though our present global difficulties are somewhat hampering the timings of those plans, they are there in the background and will be completed in due course. For anyone in the village, who cares about their community and has some time to spare, do think of joining us on the Parish Council – you will get a warm welcome, and if you’re like me, a warm feeling inside, knowing you are contributing! Regards,
Christine

MacDonald
The Financial Fairy Godmother of Broadbridge Heath
22% rise in money fraud A sad product of the pandemic is an increase in scams. I personally know people who have been tricked out of their life savings and many people have been scammed out of pension savings too. In 2020 bank transfer fraud rose by 5%, but with 22% more actual scams, more people were scammed but for lower amounts.* Having had someone try this out on me, my key advice is this: If you are called out of the blue just say you will phone back to verify who they say they are. Even if the number looks real, do not be fooled: your bank/ solicitor/ whoever will understand if it is a genuine call, whereas the scammer may become rude and unprofessional. Often we worry that we may offend a caller but please make sure you always put yourself first. Scams I have seen include ‘official’ calls using a mobile number; threats of arrest if I do not provide confidential information NOW; notification of ‘unpaid’ bills; and emails from banks I don’t even have an account with. Never follow links on texts or emails or use provided phone numbers – always use a trusted source to find the web address or phone number. Common pension and investment scams take payment for fake investments or entice you to invest in products which they claim will give you a high return. The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) have a lot of advice on their website (fca.org.uk/consumers) where you can find out more about what to look out for and they even have a tool to help you to check whether something you are being offered is a potential a scam. If you are ever in any doubt or do not know what to do, please give us a call even if you simply require a sense check. *https://which.co.uk, 26th March 2021
