News from Broadbridge Heath Football Club
The Club won the Respect Merit Award for the Southern Combination Football League Premier Division for October/November. Its only given to the Clubs First Team and is based on the teams discipline record during that period. A shame they don’t also give an award to the Reserve teams as Broadbridge Heath Reserves haven’t had a single booking in a league game all season. November and December proved to be very rewarding for the club followers with seven wins from eight games for the first team, the only defeat came from a very late goal in the 88th minute for the then division leaders Eastbourne Town. The first team entered four senior Cup Competitions for the season and coming into January are still in three of them. In the Parafix Sussex Senior Cup BBHFC will play Ryman Premier Division side Burgess Hill Town on Tuesday 5th January, in the Sussex RUR Cup BBHFC defeated Littlehampton Town 2-0 to earn a place in the semi-final against Newhaven this match will be played at Culver Road Lancing on Tuesday 26 January and in the Peter Bentley League Cup BBHFC will play at home to Little Common date to be arranged. The Junior section are still seeking help with running and coaching a second U14 team that we are running in the South Surrey Youth league. www.pitchero.com/clubs/broadbridgeheathfc First Team Fixtures: Mon 28th December Away v Loxwood, K.O. 11.00 Sat 2nd January Away v Horsham YMCA, K.O. 3.00 Tues 5th January Home v Burgess Hill Town, K.O. 7.45 Sat 9th January Home v Pagham, K.O. 3.00 Sat 16th January Away v Lancing, K.O. 3.00 Sat 23rd January Home v Littlehampton Town, K.O. 7.45 Tues 26th January Away v Newhaven, K.O. 7.30 Sat 30th January Away v Chichester City, K.O. 3.00 5

A very Happy New Year to you all! Maybe a new year fills you with excitement – or maybe, as you look at what’s happening in our world, it fills you with dread. The first will enable you to make the most of life, the second will trim your wings and lower the bar of what could be achieved. Benjamin Franklyn once said: ‘Be always at war with your vices, at peace with your neighbours, and let each new year find you a better person’. And that’s a good place to be, focusing, not on things you have no control over, but how you will live within the sphere of what is. Most would agree that every new year gives us the opportunity to do some stock-taking in our lives – and to ask ourselves what steps we might take to be that better person. I don’t know about you, but for me, although I find that thought a good one, it’s fundamentally a frustrating one if I’m to do it on my own – I’ve failed in the past – what is different about next year that will mean I can triumph? I only have one answer: the Christmas message of Jesus’ birth where He is given one of the ancient names from the Old Testament – Immanuel (God with us). If God is with us then we can draw on His strength. What are those vices that we need to war against, and how will we find the strength to do it? Jesus shares our desire to fight these and having a relationship with Him empowers us to do it. Where do we find the grace to be at peace with our neighbours? Jesus, the Prince of Peace is the only one who can help us. So why not be bold and adventurous this year and ask Jesus to help you make a difference to you so that in all the business of life changes take place. Mark Twain said ‘Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbour. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover’. In my experience, there has been no better discovery than to get into the boat with the one whom ‘even the winds and the waves obey’ (Matt.8:27)

2nd Broadbridge Heath Guides and Rangers Our Winter Wonderland Camp On our winter wonderland camp we decorated the hall with paper chains and 3D snowflakes. We also went on a chip shop survey hike around Horsham, finding out lots of historical facts on the way. Once we came back to our winter wonderland we had hot chocolate and made cute sock snowman filled with lavender and rice. Later on we decided to have a snowball fight with crumbled up newspaper and we turned each other into snowman using toilet roll, it made the girls look very silly! That evening we made pizza for dinner, we didn’t have a bowl so we had to use the table; it got very messy but tasted good. In our spare time we played lots of old fashioned games like jacks and cards. The next day we made hand warmers which we heated in the microwave to keep our hands warm. By Megan Hill

Shelley Primary School On behalf of all the staff and children, we would like to wish you all a very happy New Year. After a fantastic autumn term and some wonderful Christmas celebrations we are now looking forward to an exciting spring term at Shelley Primary School. The children will be learning about fresh new topics and we have lots of activities and events planned. For any members of our local community who may be interested we will be running an Internet Safety presentation in conjunction with Sussex Police. The session will mostly be focused on the activities of the younger generation and keeping children safe online but you do not have to have a child at Shelley Primary to attend. If you would like to receive details please let the school office know via email, or alternatively keep an eye out for the date on our website. Broadbridge Heath Neighbourhood Watch With the recent reduction in funding of the Police force it is more important than ever that local neighbourhoods come together to help to look out for one another. One of the ways that people can do this is by joining your local neighbourhood watch scheme. There are several schemes running throughout Broadbridge Heath but we are also in need of volunteers to help setup new schemes in your area. OBJECTIVES OF NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH TO PREVENT CRIME – by improving security, increasing vigilance, creating and maintaining a caring community and reducing opportunities for crime by increasing crime prevention awareness. TO ASSIST THE POLICE IN DETECTING CRIME – by promoting effective communication and the prompt and accurate reporting of suspicious and criminal activity. TO REDUCE FEAR OF CRIME – by providing accurate information about risks and by promoting a sense of security and community spirit, particularly amongst the more vulnerable. TO IMPROVE POLICE/COMMUNITY LIAISON – by providing effective communication from the police to NW Co-ordinators of local crime trends/incidents which the Co-ordinators can disseminate to their scheme members, and by members informing the police of observed incidents as and when they occur. WHAT DOES NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH INVOLVE? – Neighbourhood Watch schemes are set up with the direction of a Divisional Police Crime Prevention Coordinator and organised along guidelines set out by the National Neighbourhood Watch Association, the Sussex Neighbourhood Watch Federation and agreed with the Sussex Police Force. Horsham Neighbourhood Watch also run sessions for primary school children called Junior Neighbourhood Watch and we have just finished the 6 weekly sessions of the Junior NHW course with Year 5 and 6 pupils at Shelley Primary, and presented JNHW Course certificates to the participants on Tuesday Dec 8th at the school. Horsham Neighbourhood watch is also on Facebook and you can like the page to receive regular updates of what is happening in the Horsham district. The page is called "Horsham Neighbourhood Watch" If you are interested in joining an existing scheme you can see if there is one registered in your area by checking the ourwatch website http://www.ourwatch.org.uk or you can send me an email at bbhnhw@gmail.com. Broadbridge Heath Cricket Club Just on the edge of the village, to the north on the Warnham road, lies a small oasis of green sporting area. There, you will find the Broadbridge Heath cricket, tennis and stoolball clubs providing excellent facilities in a lovely rural setting. The cricket club has been running since 1898. It runs two adult league teams on a Saturday, a social team on Sundays and occasional mid-weeks, indoor league cricket during the winter, a renovated clubhouse, excellent practise facilities and a developing Junior Section. Both adult league sides offer good league cricket; in particular, the 1st XI are well established in Division 2 of the West Sussex Invitation Cricket League, a feeder direct into the Sussex Premier League, where they have finished a strong third in the last two seasons. Club details, fixtures can be found at: www.broadbridgeheath.play-cricket.com/home/home.asp

The Financial Fairy Godmother of Broadbridge Heath
Are your loved ones managing? What do you do when someone can’t manage at home any more? At this time of year families tend to get together, and it might become apparent that a family member isn’t managing as well as we thought they were. In fact, they may have reached a point where they need care. When a person first needs care, it can be like stepping onto a different planet. Here are a few of the things you need to do: Get the right care assessments and state benefits Find the right care, whether that’s in a care home or at home Work out who’s going to pay for it and how to make the money last… As the individual may be elderly, or have suffered a debilitating injury, the burden usually falls on someone else. I help the ‘someone else’ to Make sure their relative or friend gets the right care Make the money last as long as possible Ensuring the person can live where they want to for as long as they want to Take suitably qualified advice Despite fees averaging over £29,000 a year1 only 13% of people funding their own care get professional financial advice from a qualified adviser2. As a result 1 in every 4 runs out of money and has to fall back on the state for help3. 1
