Those with no place to call home Dr Martin Warner, the Bishop of Chichester, in a video message posted on the diocesan You Tube channel, urges local communities across Sussex to "be mindful of those who have left their families behind because they were no longer able to live in the place they called home.". The Bishop said that the working out of the reality of God "living amongst us" is a challenge recognised by people of many different faiths. Dr Martin Warner
"We talk about [Jesus] living amongst us and we refer to him finding a shelter. This surely brings to mind the dismantling of the temporary shelters in Calais and the many young people badly affected by having nowhere to be," explains Dr Warner.
He added: "I hope that in the year ahead, we can find it in our hearts to ensure that.....those who are most vulnerable will find a home with us." 4
Broadbridge Heath Green Fingers:
Gardening by Barry Hearnshaw. PLANT OF THE MONTH
Sarcococca (Christmas Box, Sweet Box) An evergreen shrub, comes in various forms, in the way of species and varieties. Some may have purple stems to enhance the plant, foliage usually dark green and narrow shaped. Flowers borne in small clusters, within leaf axils. Pink in bud, opening to white and fragrant. One plant can have both male and female flowers, which produce dark berried fruit in Spring.
An ideal plant for normal or woodland conditions. Tolerant of shade, but can be grown in open areas. Soil needs to be moist in both environments. Report by Mark Pearce Your Friendly Local Nurseryman Jobs for the month of January Coldest Month Frost, rainfall and winds are increasingly common, sunshine hours are much reduced and it can be bitter with a risk of snow. You may not want to be working outside at this time of year, but luckily there's not a lot to do. Keep an eye on winter protection, and if you have a greenhouse, make sure the heater works. 10 jobs this month 1 Recycle your Christmas tree by shredding it for mulch 2 Clean pots and greenhouses ready for spring 3 Dig over any vacant plots that have not been dug already 4 Repair and re-shape lawn edges 5 Inspect stored tubers of Dahlia, Begonia and Canna for rots or drying out 6 Prune apple and pear trees. Start forcing rhubarb 7 Plan your vegetable crop rotations for the coming season 8 Keep putting out food and water for hungry birds 5

Broadbridge Heath FC
The first team continue to do well in the Southern Combination Premier Division and at the time of writing are in 6th place but there are some tough local derby's over the Christmas and New Year period at home to Loxwood and then away to Horsham YMCA. The team have also won their way through to the semi-final of the Peter Bentley Challenge Cup where they will play Hayward Heath Town, venue and date to be decided. Heath Reserves continue their excellent start to the season, coming into the Christmas period they remain unbeaten in their league, 5 points clear at the top of the division and through to the quarter-final of the Reserve Section Cup where they will travel to play Saltdean United. The Under 18s have exceeded expectations this season, when you consider the entire team were playing in the Horsham Youth League Under 16s section last season, they have done remarkably well and currently sit in 4th place in the Southern Combination Youth League Central Division; several players have also stepped up to play in the Reserve team and do not look out of place at that level. In the Junior section I'd first like to thank those involved in organising a very successful Fund Raising Gala in the Village Centre, especially the VC Committee and the many volunteers who helped plan, decorate the hall and clear up afterwards, a special thanks to all those who attended and to the many individuals and organisations who donated prizes. On the field in the Horsham Youth League the Under 15s remain unbeaten and are top of their division, the Under 13s are mid-table but the Under 12s have struggled but then they were put in the A division. In the Sussex Sunday League the Under 12's have put in some very impressive performances this season against some of the top sides in the county; all other junior teams continue to play friendly games arranged by the HDYFL. There have been two new appointments, Adam Gerrard has taken over the role of Club Welfare Officer and Tim Roberts has been appointed Youth Development Officer; we wish them both a very long and successful association with the club.

They include 3 football pitches which have been leveled and drained but won't be seeded until the Spring, one pitch will be enclosed with floodlights and two small stands to meet the Ground Grading requirements of the level the club currently play. If you would like to join our friendly team of volunteers, we are particularly seeking a new Treasurer and Secretary for our Junior Section, then we would really like to hear from you whether it's juniors or seniors we have a role waiting for you. CRICKET
Broadbridge Heath Cricket Club As ever, there’s always something to say about cricket during the winter, if it’s only browsing the Christmas catalogues for Father Christmas to bring us some brand new kit – and there’s some fabulous kit out there even if they have now decided to stop the bats getting any thicker. They really have changed the game dramatically (I think for the good) and now batsmen at the Top Common can almost reach the tennis courts hitting north, Field Place hitting south and over the clubhouse into the field when hitting west. Some of us have been around long enough to remember when you were lucky to hit the ball off the square with the old bats! Big hitting is going to play an even bigger part in our league cricket in the future as the league have now agreed that Divisions 4 to 10 will be solely 40/40 win/lose cricket. Also, the ‘elite’ top three divisions will play half their season’s matches 40/40 too with the other half as currently. They will mirror the Sussex Premier League and other counties such as Surrey. The changes will mean that we will have much shorter matches which, in turn, should help maintain or increase the numbers playing cricket. Meanwhile, cricket indoors goes-on and our Crawley Indoor League team has won two, lost two against much bigger clubs. Chairman Tim Wells has been the star with the bat so far, proving that you don’t have to be a spring chicken with perfect eyesight to do well indoors. Many members have also been down to the County nets at Hove for some intensive work in professional surroundings. Meanwhile, the Club’s own adult and junior indoor nets should start in the New Year; details will be in the next edition. Report written by Colin Case 7
1st Broadbridge Heath Scout Group After 27 years as a leader with 1st Broadbridge Heath Scout Group Paula Flack has hung up her woggle! The last day of our term the Group had a Christmas party and ‘Thank you’ party for Paula – a great time was had by all, with party games, food and an hour and a half of fun and laughter. The Deputy District Commissioner commended Paula on her tremendous work over the last 27 years. Paula started with the Group in 1989 as an Assistant Beaver Leader, progressing to Beaver Leader and then in 2008 as Group Scout Leader. In that role she was always there for everyone – children and adults alike, any help needed she was there. She is not leaving the Scout Group, but will be more in the background on the committee. So the group will go into 2017 with a new focus. We now have new helpers and assistant leaders, so we go from strength to strength, but we can always accommodate more.
This year the Group has had a busy term with visits to a climbing wall and the high ropes experience at the Pavilions. Some have been busy working towards a variety of different badges including their Cooks badge. There have been numerous visits to Colgate campsite with various activities including a treasure hunt. Of course, our 101 Dalmatians gained 2nd place in the village Scarecrow Competition. 8
1st Broadbridge Heath Rainbows "I enjoy coming to Rainbows because I have fun working and playing with my friends. We learnt about different foods this term and made a placemat showing where to put my knife, fork and spoon. We made sparkly pictures and I especially enjoyed having sparklers on Bonfire night. For Christmas we made a countdown calendar, a door hanger and a Santa face made with tissue paper." Written by Charlotte Brindley 2nd Broadbridge Heath Brownies This term our Brownies have taken part in a variety of Activities. We completed the Brownie Traditions Badge where the Brownies learnt about what Brownies did in the 1970’s and 1980’s; we celebrated 150 years of Beatrix Potter by doing a challenge badge, part of which involved a trail around Southwater Country park and culminating with fun in the Dinosaur park. We made a Owl fridge magnet out of clay, a frog egg cup warmer and piggy cupcakes. The Top Secret Challenge involved them writing secret messages in wax crayons to each other. Six brownies took part in the Remembrance Day parade in the village for the first time in many years, and were very proud to represent Guiding. Eleven girls recently took part in the Reindeer Run involving them dressed as Reindeers and doing an obstacle course at Farlingtons School, in the process raising money for Chestnut Tree Hospice. Our final evenings have been a Christmas party and attending the Division Carol Service in readiness for We have places available Christmas. for your daughter to start Jo Pratt Brownie Leader and Joint District Commissioner in January 2017. 2nd Broadbridge Heath Guides and Rangers During this month the girls have enjoyed a variety of activities. They have played games in the dark at Nowhurst Guide Campsite, a night hike from the Broadbridge Heath to the campsite, a pamper evening as well as a trip to the panto. Some of the girls took part in a Reindeer Run to help raise funds for The Chestnut Tree House Hospice. They were part of a group of girlguiding members from across our county and raised over £300. ‘Firstly, we started by putting on a red nose and a pair of reindeer antlers. Secondly, we did an obstacle course. We took part in a 3 lapped run. Finally, a lovely hot chocolate and mince pies was drank and eaten. To top it all off we sang carol songs.’ Written by Anna, Lucy and Keira

The Financial Fairy Godmother of Broadbridge Heath
2016: What a Year ! What a year 2016 was ! With surprises including Brexit, Trump and a new UK Prime Minister, I wonder what’s in store for us in 2017 ? I like to think that every new year is a new start, where you can put the past behind you. It’s also a good time to reflect on any learning from the good times and bad times you’ve experienced, and a great time to take stock and look at your finances. Cashflow modelling Have you ever sat back and drawn a timeline of your life, plotting when you intend to retire and all the expenditure you have planned along the way? If yes, you can then calculate the amount of finance you’ll need to achieve these goals. We call this exercise ‘cashflow modelling’, and our clients find it especially useful when they have major lifestyle changes ahead. One main fear is that they won’t have enough funds in place when they need them. The modelling process gives them peace of mind, to see what they can afford, and work out what steps they need to take. It helps eliminate those sleepless nights when your brain is working overtime, trying to analyse how you can achieve what you want. Sounding board Many of my clients use me as their ‘sounding board’ – they may have sophisticated financial knowledge but see the virtue of talking about their financial situation to an independent professional. If it’s been a while since you’ve seen an Independent Financial Adviser (or if you never have) why call us and arrange a financial MOT? We look forward to helping you plan for 2017 and beyond.
