Parish Point Of View Kate Bailey, Curate St John’s Church, Broadbridge Heath, Church Road, RH12 3LD 01403 274114 info@stjohnsbbh.org.uk www.stjohnsbbh.org.uk Children, families and people of all ages are welcome. We have had a wonderful new mural installed in St. John’s Hall, which depicts 31 Parables of Jesus, created by local artist Nikki Bridgman. It’s beautiful and vibrant …. and it’s a great talking point, as I discovered at the Village Lunch on the day I wrote this! Do come and see it when the Hall is open – perhaps come along to the Early Bird Café on Tuesday mornings between 8.45 and 10am in term time, enjoy a leisurely coffee and toast, and be waited on by pupils from Shelley School! I don’t know which is your favourite parable that Jesus told – mine is the parable of the Prodigal Son in which a young man decides to go off and spend his inheritance on wild living, but when he falls on hard times he realises that he would be better off back home, and comes back to beg his father’s forgiveness for his actions. Dad, however is just thrilled to have him back – and hosts a great party in celebration. The meaning – it doesn’t matter how far we go from God, he will always welcome us back with open arms.
So come along to St. John’s and see the mural – we’d love to see you! God Bless Revd. Kate Bailey

BBH Mag Sport
News from local sports clubs.
If you would like to publish your sports news in this magazine please contact the Editor by email: bbh.mag@gmail.com FOOTBALL Broadbridge Heath Football Club By now the FIFA 2018 World Cup group matches should have been completed and the many football connoisseurs can look forward to the final stages of the competition. It's amazing how much work the hosts have to do to prepare for the tournament, new hotels, transport links, communication lines, new stadiums or old ones refurbished, new grass pitches to allow the worlds elite players to perform to the best of their abilities and a million other tasks, yet despite all the pre-tournament concerns it always seems to go without a hitch. I just wish the same could be said for our new football facilities, already several years later than originally agreed, we now find ourselves at that "pre-tournament" stage with real concerns that the new pitches will not be ready for the start of the season (August). Last year we were assured that the contractors would return early in Spring to dress, level, feed, fertilise and irrigate the new pitches and create a perfect playing surface to start the new season. Mid-June now and we're still waiting for the contractors to finish off the pitches and if they do not pull their finger out pretty soon and complete the works and treat those pitches with tender loving care for the next 3 months, then it could be disastrous for the club. We have 3 junior teams and 5 senior teams scheduled to play games on the new pitches next season and with the old Leisure Centre being demolished in October the teams will have nowhere to play and we would be homeless. So lets be positive, everything is possible and lets believe that just for once the developers will actually do the right thing and deliver the community pitches that we were promised. So assuming all goes to plan we aim to run 16 teams next season from Under 6 right through to our Veterans team (Over 35). The juniors will run 10 teams and the seniors will run 6 teams with a new Under 17 and Under 23 side. Several new players and committee members have joined us from the Wickhurst Green development and they've fitted in right away, so if you'd like to join a friendly community club as player, coach or committee member, then please do get in touch, you can never have enough volunteers. CRICKET
Broadbridge Heath Cricket Club
Byfleets Lane Broadbridge Heath West Sussex RH12 3PB www. broadbridgeheath.play-cricket.com It’s been a mixed few weeks for our 1st XI with wins over Henfield IIs and Himani but defeats to Crawley Eagles III and local rivals Slinfold II. However, we are second in Div 7 and notable performances continue with Tom Endacott getting another ton, Doni James getting 98 and excaptain Jordan Ruff (stopping off on his way to/from holiday) + Grant Ovington both getting 50s. In the bowling Alex Round and Tom Endacott both got 5 wicket hauls and Tom is now the leading wicket taker in the Division and very close to leading in the whole League of 35 divisions. Meanwhile, the 2nd XI are going even better and top their Division unbeaten with Allan Round, Ben Tyson, Shaji Philip, Nick Vowels and Danny Kochikkat (twice) all getting passed 50. So, the successful start to the season continues, amazing giving our major issues over the winter. We don’t think that they have gone away for good but the dry sunny weather coupled with our results has at least helped us enjoy the moments. However, June looks like being one of the driest on record in the South East so watering is going to be our next issue ! Here’s our home fixtures for the coming few weeks: 1st July – President’s XI 14th July – 1st XI v Littlehampton, Clapham & Patching (League) 21st July – 1st XI v Clymping (League) 28th July – 2nd XI v Crawley Eagles V (League) ==================================

St John’s Church building to be extended and renewed. Church will apply to council for planning permission. St John’s church was newly built and consecrated in 1963. The church elevations, dominated by four triangular, timber windows will be familiar to most of you. Over the years, with seasonal variations of temperature and humidity and natural movement of the timber, most of the framing joints have cracked and the surrounding wood, being permanently damp, is progressively rotting. As a result, maintenance of the windows has become increasingly difficult and costly. The porch and organ loft have both been subject to long-term damp intrusion and, despite recent costly repairs, it is recognised that the maintenance burden has become unsustainable. The church committee decided earlier this month to replace the windows with curtain wall-type double glazing which will be low maintenance and be both energy and cost efficient. With this initiative to improve the church building, the committee has also decided to use the opportunity to extend and improve the on-site facilities. Community and congregational growth from near neighbours on the new estates has meant that provisions for functions and activities, not solely church-related, need to be expanded and made more flexible. To that end, it has been decided to build a link between the church and the hall which will provide a new entrance foyer, with potential for a coffee bar, and an additional activity room. The concept for the link is a warm, open and inviting space to everyone in the BBH community. The church committee is also mindful of the ecological responsibilities of maintaining a public building. There is a movement in the Anglican church, the EcoChurch, which seeks to minimise the carbon footprint of its facilities and St John’s commits, as part of this renewal project, to make fuller use of renewable energy and improved energy conservation; solar power is high on the agenda. The architect for St John’s will now be working on detailed plans of these proposals for HDC planning approval.

Letters to the Editor Your views on all matters concerning the village. Email bbh.mag@gmail.com John Hallinan writes.. I would like to set up an action group in Wickhurst Green, hopefully with one resident from each street. The aim would be to hear from those concerned about the roads and pavements, the new Community Centre in Sargents Way, the dangers posed by the rotten branches on the large oak trees, the lack of lighting alongside Old Wickhurst Lane for children going to school and residents using the Tesco Superstore, any gardening problems with weeds and pests like vine weevil. Indeed any issue residents would like to raise. Please email.. helpfornewresidents@gmail.com ================================================================

MacDonald
The Financial Fairy Godmother of Broadbridge Heath
How much tax will I pay when I die? Property prices are currently high, so if someone is a homeowner, their beneficiaries might have to pay inheritance tax (IHT) when they die. To know how much, it's important to work out your ‘Nil Rate Band’ (NRB), because anything above that is taxed at 40%. Everyone who dies this year has an individual Nil Rate Band of £325,000.
There is now an additional Residence NRB, which is £125,000 for the year 2018/19. This applies where the deceased had an interest in a property that has been their residence at some point, and is part of the estate they have left to one or more direct descendants. This means that the total NRB could be up to £450,000. If not used on first death, this amount could be transferred to the spouse. Of course it’s not as simple as that. For example, if the net value of the deceased’s estate is above £2 million (after deducting any liabilities but before reliefs and exemptions), the Residence NRB is reduced by £1 for every £2 that the net value exceeds this amount. What this means to you There are many ways that potential IHT liabilities can be reduced. Just give me a call on 01403 288078 if you’d like some help with that. Disclaimer: Allowances, limits and thresholds correct at the time of writing, but are subject to change in the future. Please confirm the current position before taking any action.
