330 mile cycle ride in aid of Retrack charity stopped off at Broadbridge Heath

‘Retrak’ works with some of the most marginalised children in the world, street children. By reintegrating children forced by circumstances to live on the streets back into a family setting children can thrive in a safe, loving and caring environment. The chairman of Retrak cycled over 330 miles - from Manchester to Brussels via the Chilterns, Somerset and .... Horsham! This rather tortuous route took David to some of the Churches that have supported the work of Retrak over the years, including St John’s in BBH. David said "Retrak is all about strengthening families and relationships with families and I hope that this trip will help to strengthen relationships with our supporting churches". David planned to arrive at St John's around lunch time on Wednesday, May 17th. Waiting for him was a 'High Tea' light meal in the late afternoon so everyone had the opportunity to meet him, to enjoy pizza; quiche and salad followed by ice cream and to support him in the epic cycle. To find out more have a look at www.retrak.org ————————————————————————————————————— Church notice board decorated with flowers!

BROADBRIDGE HEATH PARISH COUNCIL Contact: The Clerk of the Parish Council e-mail: clerk@broadbridgeheath-pc.gov.uk Telephone: 07716 130103

Hello, I’m Matt Gaffar and I have recently been co-opted as a Parish Councillor on to the Broadbridge Heath Parish Council. I’ve lived in Broadbridge Heath since I was seven years old, I have grown up in Broadbridge Heath, been educated locally at Shelley Primary, Tanbridge House and Collyer’s. I left the village to study for degrees in Politics in Bristol and at University College London, and when returned began working in Horsham. I discovered a vacancy on the Parish Council, and Matt Gaffar thought that with my passion in politics, my interest in the community and my perspective as a young person, that I could make a difference on the Parish Council. Our Parish Council really prides itself on its locality and issues affecting our area. The other Councillors and Clerk have made me feel very welcome since my co-option; and have helped me get to grips with their procedures, the different area’s they cover and various committees that they have. As a young person and as the most recent Parish Councillor to be co-opted, I hope to make a constructive difference in any way I can. I hope to bring a potentially different perspective on certain issues and to ultimately serve the community in a way that can positively impact our parish. The Parish Council is a good way of meeting other like-minded people in the local area, to hear and contribute to some of the issues and projects, and make a difference. Some of the current projects the Parish Council are currently involved in include the redevelopment of the Village Centre and traffic calming in the village. Members of the public may attend Parish Council meetings and speak during the first 15 minutes, giving you the opportunity to raise issues and get your views across. It is also worth noting that the Councillors from Horsham District Council and West Sussex County Council also sometimes attend to update the Parish Council on their actives; so also a good opportunity to engage with them and talk about issues. I can reassure you, the stereotypes of the Vicar of Dibley characters couldn’t be further from the truth! If anyone is interested in contributing to the Parish Council, and its activities, I urge you to contact the Parish Clerk.

Broadbridge Heath Gala Association. It is with huge regret that at the Broadbridge Heath Gala AGM on Tuesday 16 May it was decided that we could no longer keep going. We have also decided not to run the scarecrow competition this year as we don’t have enough personnel to do the necessary background organisational and publicity work. Despite advertising the AGM widely and attempting to garner support for new committee members throughout Broadbridge Heath, including our newest residents, we have found no new interest in joining the Committee. Viv Edwards who has given many faithful years to the committee and held both chair and treasurer positions had wanted to retire at this AGM but has agreed to continue until we hold our next meeting which will be an Extraordinary Meeting on 19 September 2017 at 19:30pm at the Village Centre. This meeting will propose that without closing the organisation completely we will not run any events unless or until there is enough interest from people in the village to do so. We will also seek to change the clause in the constitution about the number of meetings to a minimum of three a year. The four remaining members who came to the AGM are all happy to continue if we can increase our numbers.

Please note this date, and if you would like to remedy this position by committing to a handful of meetings a year and some time and skills to making some village event happen again - whether that be scarecrows, village fete, or something else - please come to the meeting and say so - you will receive a warm welcome! To contact the Gala Association email: bbh@rh12.co.uk —————————————————————————————————————LETTERS TO THE EDITOR bbh.mag@gmail.com I am a regular user of BBH Leisure Centre and I thought readers of the BBH Mag might be interested in the latest news on the redevelopment. HDC publish regular customer updates on their website: https://www.horsham.gov.uk/leisurepages/Leisure/sports/leisure-and-recreationcentres/broadbridge-heath-leisure-centre/customer-updates There is an update dated 20th April 2017 from which you will see that full scale construction of the new centre is expected to start in early June 2017. You will also see an apology for the loss of use of the Tennis Courts (MUGAs) as they will no longer be available for use during the summer once construction work commences. There is no information on the start date for the new football pavilion, but I expect the Football Club will have an update on this. Regards, Peter Ballard 7

Parish Point Of View Kate Bailey. Assistant Curate, St Johns Church I can hardly believe that I have been here in Broadbridge Heath for a year! John and I have met so many wonderful people in the community as a whole, and particularly in the Wickhurst Green estate where we live. It has been a time of personal change for us as we adjusted to being here in Horsham, and for our neighbours as we have seen building sites around us turned into homes, and welcomed many new people moving in. At St. John’s church too, we have welcomed many new families through Thanksgiving or Baptism services for their children and at various events we ran during the year. On Christmas Eve many families attended our Christingle service in the Church. As our community grows larger, so does our church family . . . but we always have room for more to join us! At a recent Baptism service at St. John’s the friends and family of the group remarked what a lovely, friendly and welcoming church we are! That’s always good to hear . . . but of course what we aim to do here at St. John’s is to share the love of God to all we come into contact with. It’s most definitely NOT just about going to a particular building on a Sunday and meeting with others, it’s all about meeting with Jesus and taking His love out into the community. Last month we heard the news that we will at some point be getting a new primary school in the Wickhurst Green area of our village, but there are some who are worried about what this might mean for Shelley school. As the Broadbridge Heath community let us get behind both our schools, and find ways we can help them – with resources, with our support for their community activities, and most especially by giving our time. Let’s all work together and celebrate this wonderful community which we live in. God Bless, Kate ————————————————————————————————————————————

BBH Mag Sport

News from local sports clubs.

If you would like to publish your sports news in this magazine please contact the Editor by email: bbh.mag@gmail.com FOOTBALL The first team season ended with a narrow 2-1 defeat away to Eastbourne Town in the Southern Combination Premier Division but despite the result the Bears finished the season in 8th place, our highest ever finish. So it's now time for the player's to rest up during the close season but no rest for our club officials, first there's the preparation for the End of Season Awards which for the Juniors was held in the Village Centre on the 6th May where 33 awards were presented to the players. The Presentation Evening for the Seniors will take place on 20th May again in the Village Centre where awards will be presented to the first, reserves, under 18s and veteran teams. At the same time the club are busy with several of our managers and coaches attending training courses, club officials seeking new and existing sponsorship and affiliating with the relevant Leagues and FA; pitch repairs to be made, new kit and equipment to purchase, friendly and 5-a-side games to arrange. Regarding sponsorship we are delighted that Countryside have agreed to sponsor both the first team and the juniors again next season; sponsorship allows us to keep costs down to a minimum to provide football to as many as possible, not just for those who can afford it. Although we are delighted with the sponsorship that Countryside have provided to the club over the years, we are less than happy that we are still waiting for them to provide the outdoor sports facilities and pavilion which according to the WoH Section 106 Agreement the developers "would not Occupy or cause to allow to be Occupied more than 749 dwellings until the sports facilities/pavilion have been transferred to the District Council". In our opinion we are now way past that 749 figure and to honour the Legal Agreement we believe we should have been in our new facilities approx 2 years ago.

CRICKET

Broadbridge Heath Cricket Club

Byfleets Lane Broadbridge Heath West Sussex RH12 3PB www. broadbridgeheath.play-cricket.com

After many, many weeks of drought, the rain arrived at the start of the cricket season. I sometimes think that they ought to introduce cricket in drought-ravished countries around the world to cure their water problems. However, it has not prevented us completing our matches so far and it’s been a mixed start with the 1st XI losing their first three matches but the 2nd XI winning their two. For the 1st XI, skipper Jordan Ruff has been in stunning form with the bat with two half centuries and he has been strongly supported by Josh Booker. So, our batting has been reasonably sound (our first match at East Preston provided a combined score of over 600) but injuries and absences have meant that our bowling has not been strong enough. We have particularly missed our England Disability player Fred Bridges who has joined Sussex Premier League Champions Roffey to progress his career. So, after just missing out on promotion to Div 1 in the last three seasons (third twice and fourth), this season looks like one of transition and success will be keeping our position in Div 2 – which overall appears a lot stronger this season. For the 2nd XI, everyone had chipped in with both bat and ball and with strong leadership by skipper Ian Stocker, they continue to show that the collective team spirit can often overcome the brilliant individual. Our Juniors have started too with the U10s having a close game with Barns Green. More on their season next month and they continue to have their practice sessions on a Wednesday at the Top Common. By the time you read this, up-coming home fixtures for June will be: Saturday 3 June

– U10s against Wisborough Green 1st XI against East Preston

Saturday 10th June – U10s against Billingshurst 2nd XI against Arundel II Saturday 17 June – U12s against Wisborough Green 1st XI against Barns Green (the big local derby) Saturday 24th June – 2nd against St. Andrews, Burgess Hill II

Mrs Fitzscott is an experienced Deputy Headteacher currently working in Ditchling and is very excited to be joining our team. Lucy Hammond, Chair, Governing Board of Shelley Primary School From the Friends of Shelley School (FOSS)

As you may be aware, one of the most important dates in our fundraising calendar is approaching; the Summer Fete. Established for several years now, this is a wonderful occasion to relax, have fun, sample the delicious burgers and hot dogs from our barbecue (our meat sourced from a local independent butcher), take your chances on our games and tombolas, and partake of a soft drink or a refreshing glass of Pimms! This year, the Fete will take place on Friday, June 30th, 5pm – 7pm (weather permitting), and there will be something for everyone! The theme for this year is “Go Wild!”, a celebration of both the remarkable diversity of our animal kingdom, and an instruction to enjoy yourselves. Please come along and have fun, and at the same time benefit our school with your well-spent money! A note about the committee; FOSS is a registered charity, and there are currently five hard-working trustees. We all have strong connections to the school, and are united by a desire to both promote Shelley School as a valuable and essential asset of the village, and also to raise as much money as we can to help offset the current lack of investment in West Sussex schools by providing extra resources and activities that just cannot be met from the current education budget. We can be contacted via email at fosspta17@gmail.com anytime, and always welcome suggestions, comments and feedback. Rodena Howes-Yarlett (Chair) 13

We made the swing out of wooden poles and rope in the drizzling rain. The knots we used were clove hitch, square lashing and figure of eight lashing. We all had a go on the swing at the end and luckily it didn’t fall. Even the leaders had a go! After we had a go we had to take the swing down. Written by Puffin patrol

VILLAGE ‘GREEN FINGERS’ Our page for BBH gardening enthusiasts by our gardening Editor, Barry Hearnshaw. 50 YEARS OF GARDENERS WORLD 2017 is a very special year. The BBC celebrates 50 years of BBC2's Gardeners' World at Gardeners World Live at the NEC. It will be bringing out the bunting and celebrating in style with presenters past and present, Gardeners' World themed Beautiful Borders, Nostalgia Garden set in the '60s, a feature garden showing how gardening has changed over the past five decades and more. It’s even got an exclusive birthday cake recipe - so consider a visit between June 15 – 18th for a slice of the action! Plant of the Month Potentilla (Shrubby cinquefoil) A plant genus that comes in various guises of shrubby, herbaceous and perennial form. The shrubby type comes in varying forms of habit, prostrate, low growing, medium tom large shrubs.

Foliage comes in varying shades of green; blue-green, limey-green to dark green. Growth for the varying forms, range from no more than 3ft(1m), for low growing forms. Medium shrubs 3 to 4ft (1-1.2m). For larger shrubs 4 to 5ft (1.2-1.5m). Flowers are borne in clusters, within the leaf axils and open intermittently. They open with the sun, lasting a few days, before fading with the sunlight, encouraging more flowers to open. The range of colours are from whites , reds, pinks, yellows, oranges and orange-pink shades. Report by Mark Pearce your friendly local nurseryman. June Summer arrives June 21 is the longest day of the year, and the extra light and warmth encourages the garden to put on an exuberant burst of growth. But this extra light and warmth also means weeds will sprout up from seemingly nowhere. Keep on top of them by hoeing regularly in dry conditions. 15

The Financial Fairy Godmother of Broadbridge Heath

Keeping your investments in tune. We recently rescued a piano, which is sadly rather out of tune. The piano tuner came today to tune it. To get it playing well and sounding beautiful, the strings need to be at the right tension and the hammers in good condition so they hit the strings well. It also needs to be easy to play, so the keys shouldn’t keep getting stuck. Once these things are sorted out, the piano also needs to be retuned again regularly to keep it up to scratch. Unfortunately our poor piano was old and had been somewhat neglected and is now beyond repair, so we’ll have to send it to piano heaven and get a replacement. Often our finances can be the same. It’s easy to leave the arrangements that we have made in the past, because they worked well when we bought them. Over the years, the investments held within our ISAs, bonds or pensions may be working less well, or there may now be a better way of doing what we were trying to achieve. We can now access many providers’ plans online, or at least consolidate a number of holdings into one place, making them far easier to administer. Having someone retune your investments means that you can make sure that what you have is still the best way to do what you wanted. It also means that if your existing setup is out of kilter with what you need, you can replace it with a more appropriate option, or just tweak the component parts. Regular reviews can then make sure that it never gets too far out of tune again.
