First Broadbridge Heath Beavers, Cubs and Scouts Once again the village’s young people have been exploring, inventing, learning and having a lot of fun through their participation in the Scouting movement. Our intrepid young Beavers enjoyed a session at High Places at Pavilions in the Park. Aged between five and eight, these little explorers reached dizzying heights (all safely strapped into harnesses, of course) at Horsham’s tallest attraction. They also partnered with the cubs for another fun evening at the Colgate Scout Campsite where they all enjoyed outdoor adventures and possibly even an Easter egg or two. All three units participated in a fundraising event at Marks and Spencer in Horsham over Easter weekend. Beavers, Cubs and Scouts all packed shopping bags in the food hall to raise money for Broadbridge Heath Scouting and other charities. Their efforts really are a credit to the village and the leaders who so generously volunteer their time to run Scouting. It was one of the busiest shopping weekends of the year and, as far as we know, not a single egg was broken! Our young people also did us all proud when they took part in the annual St George’s Day parade through town on Sunday 22 April. All three units were generously represented, with grown-up helpers admirably volunteering to help marshal the route. Turned out in full uniform, our Beavers, Cubs and Scouts joined 1,500 friends in Scouting from units across Horsham to march in the spring sunshine.

After all that celebrating, it is with sadness and much thanks that we bid an extremely fond farewell to our beloved Beaver leader, Polly Clark. Polly has been the smiling face who has welcomed many a Broadbridge Heath child into the wonderful world of Scouting and will be greatly missed. With Polly’s departure there is a vacancy for a Beaver Leader in the village. Beavers meet from 5-6:15pm on Tuesday evenings. If you’d be interested in getting involved, please email our Chair, Paula Flack at Paulaflack63@gmail.com for more information.

Friends of Shelley School (FOSS) We had some good weather for the annual FOSS Sponsored walk on May 4th and a good time was had by all! The children were absolutely amazing, and very hardworking, and we sold more than the odd couple of ice creams that day. We are currently planning our forthcoming events for the Summer. The inaugural FOSS Race Night – planned for Friday, June 15th, 7.30pm. Tickets will be available soon and there will also be an opportunity for folks, whether they can attend or not, to either buy the ownership of a horse, or pay to be a jockey. No virtual height limitations apply – but there will be a prize if your horse wins! After that of course is The FOSS SUMMER FETE planned for Friday, 6th July, from 5pm to 7pm. The theme this year is ‘All The Fun Of The Fair’. We are hoping to deliver a community event priced for everyone’s budget, with lots to do and lots to eat and drink. Raffle tickets will also be on sale shortly, but of course that means we need Raffle prizes! Big ones, small ones, we will be grateful for all donations. But please, no real clowns. Or goldfish in bags. Other successful events planned include more FOSS Film Nights, School Discos, a sponsored read, and a FOSS Committee Members’ Himalayan Climb. (I may have made that last one up…) But what do you do with the money, I here you ask? Well, we are very proud to have recently funded a new Sports’ Kit for the pupils of Shelley, Achievement badges, and books for KS2, and we are now concentrating our efforts on replacing the worn-out interactive white boards in the upper school (a cost of approximately £12,000.) The past generosity of parents and villagers means we are close to achieving this, and with your goodwill, community spirit and (sorry to be so blunt) hard cash we will hopefully get there very soon. As always, a brief note about the committee; FOSS is a registered charity, and there are currently nine hard-working trustees, although this changes periodically. We can be contacted via email at fosspta17@gmail.com anytime. Rodena Howes-Yarlett (Chair)

Parish Point Of View Rev. Paddy Beresford, Vicar St John’s Church, Broadbridge Heath, Church Road, RH12 3LD 01403 274114 info@stjohnsbbh.org.uk www.stjohnsbbh.org.uk Children, families and people of all ages are welcome. Unpacking failure Ten years ago, I had a break from “vicaring” and spent three years teaching GCSE and A levels. One of the most interesting requirements of the staff when writing reports was the prohibited use of the word “fail”. I couldn’t say that “x had failed to pass his mock exam” – it had to be: “x was unable to be successful in his mock exam”. The sentiment was exactly the same in both cases – but it was, as the head reminded all the staff, the “fail” word that sent wrong signals… Whilst we all know that in life we fail, and others should learn to make allowances for our failings, the reality is that most of us demand high standards from those around us. We’re not good at tolerating failure. Politicians who fall short must resign. We demand that managers of large organisations, must be held to account for any failings, and football managers have a rough time of it when the team does not deliver the success that supporters demand and sacking is often the only option. Will those who failed in such ways be replaced by people who fail to fail? Hardly.

Jesus singled out those who had failed and gave them encouragement. You would have thought that would be a popular move – but He was severely criticised, and ultimately condemned to die because of it. Yet those who were bold enough to admit that they had failed to live effectively by God’s commands - were drawn to Jesus because He gave them hope – He forgave them and promised them a new beginning. Jesus told them how God is immensely gracious and was always willing to give us another go when we seriously fail and mess up. In the story of the Prodigal Son – the son rebelled against his father and showed greed in taking his family inheritance early. He travelled far away where he squandered all the money and found himself quickly struggling to survive. Then he came to his senses and realised he had to go back to his father and admit that he had done wrong.

While he was still a long way off, his father saw him coming and ran out to meet him and embraced him. The son had barely finished his confession when his father ordered the servants to give bring clothing fit for a son and arrange a great party. Admission of failure can only result in God forgiving us, and accepting us. That’s good news - don’t you think? ————————Praying for Our Local Streets. During 2018 at St John’s Church, we are praying every month for a set of roads in the village. If you would like something prayed for, email us: office@stjohnsbbh.org.uk For June the roads are: Findon Way, Corsletts Avenue, Harris Way, Harding Lane, River Walk 9

BBH Mag Sport

News from local sports clubs.

If you would like to publish your sports news in this magazine please contact the Editor by email: bbh.mag@gmail.com FOOTBALL Broadbridge Heath Football Club Thank goodness the season has finished, it must surely have been one of the wettest on record with games postponed week after week due to waterlogged pitches. The juniors had most of their season wiped out at Warnham School where the pitch was saturated from October to March, the pitches behind the village centre were better but we will still lost a lot of games. So now with the season behind us we can all take some time off for a few months, get out the garden hammock and relax with a cool beer on a summers day or take a stroll to the common for a leisurely Saturday or Sunday afternoon sitting in a deck chair watching the cricket team entertain us with the sound of leather on willow. Unfortunately nowadays the only people who really have time off is the players, for the rest of us the close season can be one of our busiest times of the year. Many of our youth teams will be playing tournament football, then there's AGM's to attend, committee meetings, FA Charter Courses, team affiliation & registration, kit and equipment to source, pitches to repair and with our new facilities there will be another 101 things to do. So it's going to be a really busy time for us all and don't forget we also have to find time to schedule watching all those FIFA World Cup matches, I think the whole country could do with a bit of cheer so nothing less than victory for England will do this year. Regarding our new facilities, things are progressing well with the pavilion most of the outside work on the building is complete and the contractors can now concentrate on the internal finishes. In the next few weeks construction of the new ground will commence that includes a fence around the main pitch, that's the pitch closest to the pavilion, floodlights, two small stands one on the halfway line to the south and the other behind the goal to the west, dugout's, lean-to rail and players tunnel. The finishing touches will include a new tarmac service road and pathway to the pavilion from Cook Way, levelling and grass seeding. The completion date for all the work remains early August but the club don't anticipate getting access to it until a few weeks later.

We are expecting work on the pitches to resume anytime soon, the contractors said they would be back in the Spring to level the playing fields, reseed and fertilise, I think they meant Spring 2018 because with only a few weeks of Spring left they are leaving it a bit late. Our biggest concern is if they don't have the pitches ready in time, if they're not then where would our senior teams play because in October they start knocking down the Old Leisure Centre and then the current pitch would no longer satisfy the rigid FA Ground Grading Rules and we would be homeless with nowhere to play. Continued on next page... www.pitchero.com/clubs/broadbridgeheathfc 10

Other work to be completed by the contractors after we move in includes the planting of shrubs and trees to the boundary on the west between the open space and the houses, levelling of the land to the south, east and west boundaries and constructing the skateboard park to the south of the MUGAs although there is a chance that could be completed earlier. So to all those player's who are managing to have a break during the close season, enjoy the time, preseason training starts soon. CRICKET

Broadbridge Heath Cricket Club

Byfleets Lane Broadbridge Heath West Sussex RH12 3PB www. broadbridgeheath.play-cricket.com After our struggles over the winter, it has been pleasing at last to get the cricket season underway. We had a fabulous day on the 21st April at Findon, a truly idyllic ground on the left as you enter the Long Furlong off the A24. The sun shone, nearby campers were BBQing and our captain Tom Endacott, scored the Club’s first century of the season. The following Saturday the season started in the new Sussex Cricket League (apparently now the biggest cricket league in the UK) and, yes, you have guessed it, the weather prevented any play – as it has done again once since. In between, the sun shone brilliantly when 1st XI won their game against local rivals Horsham IIIs with fine bowling by Tom Endacott with 4 wickets and great batting by Mike Stocker whose 65 not out included a six through the rear window of another player’s car !! For the 2nd XI, young Ben Tyson scored 74 in their win over Holmbush Park. So, a successful start to the season along with the added good news that we have succeeded in putting-out two teams so far. It has not been easy (even I have been selected once but fortunately it rained) but we are clearly competitive in the divisions where we have been placed in the new League. The only disappointing news is that despite great efforts by Fred Bridges and Andy White, our Junior cricket leaders, we have had to stand-down our Junior Section this season because, ultimately, we just did not have enough children to complete our competition commitments. However, some Junior practice sessions are still being held. Here’s our home League fixtures for the coming few weeks: 26th May – 1st XI v Slinfold II 2nd June – 2nd XI v Ifield IV 9th June – 1st XI v Henfield II 16th June – 2nd v Ram IV Don’t forget that ladies stoolball is also played on the Top Common. If you want to know more about this great Sussex game, see the web site here: https:// www.stoolball.org.uk/broadbridgeheath or visit practice nights on Friday evenings. BADMINTON Horsham Arun Badminton Club: Keenager’s Section have a friendly section that play at BBH leisure centre Monday and Friday mornings. You must be over 50 and have played badminton before, knowing rules, scoring, etc. Please ring Marianne on 01403 258086 for more information. 11

Edburton Contractors and Bellway Homes have sent a letter to local residents in Broadbridge Heath telling them that there will be roadworks relating to the Bellway Homes Solomon’s Seal development on old Guildford Road. The letter says that the contractors will carry out essential highway works for the Solomon’s Seal development and that they will keep residents informed of what is happening to reduce any inconvenience that may be caused by their presence. The letter, dated 17th May 2018 stated that “To date, the roadworks on this section of Old Guildford Road been carried out by the public utilities to divert apparatus and facilitate connections for new development”.

Letter sent to residents.

Edburton and Bellway say that if you should need to contact them regarding these works, or traffic management matters arising from them, their details are as follows. The initial works during the first two weeks will comprise a new sewer connection resulting in a partial road closure and temporary traffic signals in the vicinity of the Solomon Seal development access. From the 11th of June further partial road closures will be in operation again, including temporary traffic signals from No. 30 Old Guildford Road up to the roundabout where the road joins the A24. Traffic management will be in place 24 hours a day for the period of works. There will be no traffic diversions necessary. In the letter sent to residents Bellway Homes and Edburton say they are sorry for any inconvenience these works may cause and hope that residents can bear with them while the works take place. 12

The Financial Fairy Godmother of Broadbridge Heath

“GDPR”: What’s it all about? If your inbox is anything like mine, you have probably been receiving loads of emails recently from companies asking you to “opt back in” to receiving their emails. You might be wondering why this is. On 25 May 2018, the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is coming into effect. This is a new regulation covering data protection for individuals within the EU. How does GDPR affect you? GDPR gives you the following rights: • to be informed about what data companies hold about you • to access your data • to rectify your data • to have your data erased • to restrict processing of your data • to move, copy and transfer your data • to object to automated decision-making and profiling You may have also seen the term “Personal Data” being used a lot lately. This means data which can identify you, such as your name, address, phone number etc. There is also the term “Sensitive Personal Data”. This is personal data which consists of, for example, your health records, religious beliefs and political opinions. In summary, GDPR may seem as though it’s a nuisance, but we think it’s a good thing to protect people’s privacy. Obviously, as financial advisers, we have access to a lot of information about our clients. As a responsible business, we will of course ensure we comply with GDPR and all other relevant legislation.
