VILLAGE ‘YARN BOMBER’ NOW PLANS KNITTING CLASSES. Knitted tops for post boxes and woollen flowers appear in village.
If you are wondering why there are lots of knitted flowers around the village. Or perhaps you have noticed the knitted cover on the top of a local postbox. It's all the work of "yarn bomber" Suzi Ludlow. She told the BBH Mag "The woollen top for the postbox outside the village shop is my second postbox topper. I have also decorated the village with flowers randomly dotted here and there. They are on the railings of the Shelly pub, on the railings outside the new veterinary surgery & dentists, on the railings as you go round the roundabout at Tesco and on various areas easily spotted as you drive through the village. I have put around 80 flowers out and plan on doing another 20”. Suzie says she is now hoping to start an evening class of crochet and knitting for local women. 3

VILLAGE FETE CANCELLED. The Broadbridge Heath Gala Team have told the BBH Mag that the fete will not go ahead this year. They say “We are extremely sad to announce the Broadbridge Heath Village Fete won't be going ahead this year. With restrictions still in place and uncertainty for the coming months we would like to keep our lovely Village safe for all residents. Hopefully we will be back next year bigger and better than ever! “ However, there will be other events in the village soon “We hope to be able to hold other events later in the year. We'd also love to bring back BBH books and BBH rocks when the time is right”. ————————————————————————————————————————————
Stag Beetles: Two Falls, Two Submissions or a Knockout I’ve only ever had one sporting hero. In the red corner, standing 6ft 6 and weighing in at 365lbs, Big Daddy kept my Gran and I glued to the TV set on wet Saturday afternoons as he wrestled Giant Haystacks or Kendo Nagasaki in his sequined spandex. In June, Stag Beetles – the big daddies of the beetle world – are emerging from the ground and getting ready to rumble. There’s around 3,000 different species of beetle in Sussex and an estimated 29,000 species across Europe. Just as Big Daddy’s 64-inch chest earned him a place in the Guinness Book of Records, the 2.5 inch long Stag Beetle holds the coveted title of Europe’s Biggest Beetle. And, like a 26 stone man in a spangly leotard, the adult male Stag Beetle is equally impressive and ludicrous. Its 3-segmented black and maroon armoured body is crowned with a ridiculous pair of trademark stag-like ‘antlers'. Before these tiny titans step into the ring they have to put in some long hours in training. The beetle’s larvae spend an incredible 5-6 years munching on a deadwood diet of buried logs and roots, building the bulky body that will sustain them to survive above ground. We’re fortunate that the Horsham district is a hotspot for these Herculean heavyweights but sadly our Stag Beetles are on the ropes. The loss of old trees from the countryside has had dramatic impacts on the survival of the beetles’ underground larvae and their numbers are declining. So, if you see a Stag Beetle we’d really like to hear about it. Send details and a photo to wildcall@sussexwt.org.uk

Vicar: Mark Lavender.
Research released last week has found that 81 percent of British adults are feeling apprehensive as lockdown comes to an end. The study, commissioned by TV channel Dave, reveals that many of us are showing signs of ‘post lockdown anxiety’ following a year spent confined and communicating via phones and screens. More than threequarters admit to being nervous about interacting with people in real-life once lockdown ends and nerves are further accentuated by the prospect of attending larger social and sporting events. As a society we need to recover from this fear. We need to remember the value of touch and the affirmation of the physical presence of others. We must stop seeing other people as a threat and a potential for harm and regain a sense of community, compassion and love for other people. The bible has a lot to say about fear and in particular it tells us that “perfect love drives out fear” because “there is no fear in love”. As we rub our eyes and emerge from the hibernation of lockdown let’s remember the joy there is in meeting friends and greeting neighbours; the thrill of sharing an experience or telling a joke. Let’s greet strangers, share smiles, offer kindness and build community. There are many new homes that have been built over the past 5 years in our immediate area and plenty of people that we don’t know and who may well not know anyone else in the area. Let’s reach out to the stranger, make new friends, join new clubs and societies and create a community that we can all feel safe and at home in. God Bless you, Mark Lavender ===================== PRAYING FOR OUR STREETS. Each month, members of St John’s Church pray for a rota of streets in the village. This month they are praying for you in: Edwards Close, Heydon Way, Palmer Avenue, Langridge Lane, Farley Close, Ellis Road, Low Weald Lane, Slingsby Close. If you would like them to pray for you; contact the church office at : The Church Office, St John’s Hall, Church Road, Broadbridge Heath, RH12 3LD email: office@stjohnsbbh.org.uk 6
YES! You can now come to church at last! VILLAGE SPEEDWATCH BACK ON PATROL As the national lockdown continues to ease, the number of vehicles driving through the village has increased and unfortunately so have vehicle speeds. Over the last two weeks we have returned to operating our Speedwatch sessions, and have been trialling our new site on the Billingshurst Road. Suffice it to say, we have been kept busy.
Please remember that the speed limit is there for the safety of all road users and village residents.

Broadbridge Heath Football Club With the football season finished we can start looking forward to binge watching the UEFA EURO 2020 starting on Friday 11th June with Turkey v Italy at 8.00 live from Rome and there's no better place to watch the games than at Broadbridge Heath Football Club where we will be open for the duration. The close season is often one of the busiest times of the year for our hard-working club officials and our football management team. The facilities all need to be maintained including major pitch renovation work, seeking out sponsorship opportunities with old and new partners, new kit and equipment to purchase and 101 other jobs that go on behind the scenes. On the football front the management team are busy keeping in touch with existing players, arranging pre-season training & matches and seeking out new players to join the club. The Club will also be making changes to the youth setup with the Under 15, Under 16 and our new Under 17 team becoming our Youth Academy with former First Team Coach Nik Mulcahy taking the role of Head Coach working closely with the team Managers and Coaches with the aim is to help develop the players ability so that more of them will get the opportunity to play Southern Combination League football. So, it's a busy time of year, lots going on, if you'd like to join as a volunteer or would like to sponsor one of our teams, then why not come along for a visit and a drink in our clubhouse, new members most welcome. You can find more information about Broadbridge Heath Football Club on our website at : https://www.pitchero.com/clubs/ broadbridgeheathfc CRICKET CRICKET PRACTICE NETS STILL EVERY TUESDAY EVENING In the last edition I said I expect it will be raining by the time you read the May magazine edition. Well, I was right and nature sure has a way of making up for the April drought. Despite our wicket covers, the home 1st XI game of the 15th May was cancelled, as were the practice nets of Tuesday the 18th - and the prospects for the 2nd XI’s home game on the 22nd don’t look good at the moment either. I hope I’m wrong because they haven’t played a match yet ! For the 1st XI, two defeats has not been a great start to the season (at least one was very close) but some of the new guys have shown-up well already, particularly Tom Hughes, Tiss Jose and James Bright, all mostly with the bat. 10
CRICKET (Continued)
Our home fixtures for the next few weeks are: Saturday 22nd May – 2nd XI v Crawley III Saturday 29th May – 1st XI v Steyning II Wednesday 2nd June – Sussex Slam v Nuthurst (T20) Saturday 5th June – 2nd XI v Barns Green III Saturday 12th June - 2nd Xi v Steyning III I think there’s a good chance that by the time you read this edition, the weather will have turned and it will be warm, maybe even hot. Meanwhile, authorised and rabbit control is gradually reducing the population and, therefore, the damage to the ground, but there is still some way to go yet. Also, some readers may have seen one of the groundstaff bombing around the outfield on our brand new red gang mower. This now allows us to be almost completely self sufficient with ground maintenance. As ever, don’t forget, if you are a new cricketer to the village or used to play and fancy giving it another go, come along any Tuesday evening and give it a go. Alternatively, give Ian Stocker a call on 07570800795. He’d still love to hear from you.

The first NHS, Social Care and Frontline Workers’ Day takes place on Monday 5th July 2021. To show our support on this day we will be raising a “Thank You” Flag on our flagpole at 10am. The St George’s Flag flew proudly last month. Over the next month we will be having an Ecological Survey carried out at the Ducky pond to help support the Parish Council with any future proposed plans. It has also been agreed to purchase 2 more dog-bag dispensers to be positioned at the Common, and a recently purchased safety/rescue throwline will be installed soon. We continue to lead a Community Forum monthly meeting which has proved beneficial to all Community groups that have been able to attend. It has been a valuable and enjoyable way to share news, updates and to engage in some collaborative thinking for the benefit of the wider community! If you feel your Community group would like to join the forum, or for more information, please email Lucinda (Clerk). Many projects are happening within the Parish and we will continue to share updates on our Facebook page and Website; these include our new Parish Office, Allotments, and Parcels of Land adoption in Wickhurst Green. With recent changes to Government Meeting legislation, please review our Website where all dates for forthcoming meetings, Agendas and Minutes can be found. Hello Everyone, Firstly, we wanted to thank everyone who voted for the Liberal Democrat candidate, Belinda Walters, at the May County Council election. Congratulations to Christian Mitchell who retained the seat and continues as the County Councillor for the Village, we look forward to continuing to work with Christian on a number of issues that matter to residents. For any avoidance of doubt, we will continue to be your District Councillors until the next election in 2023. It’s been some time since we last wrote in this magazine, but we’ve continued to work hard on the issues that matter to you. We’ve been helping residents from all parts of the village and it’s been lovely to see so many of you in person. We hope that as conditions allow, we can meet many more of you, including at a future resident’s surgery. Details of the next surgery will be posted on our facebook page, along with any news and updates: www.facebook.com/bbhlibdems. Both of us have had at least one of our Covid vaccines now. We really would recommend that if you are offered the opportunity you take it. Its quick, easy and the staff at vaccination centres are great. If you aren’t in a group that’s been offered a vaccine yet then make sure your doctor’s surgery has your most up to date details so when you do get the chance, you can take it. Thank you to everyone who has made this process possible. Very best wishes, Louise and Matt Cllr Louise Potter – louise.potter@horsham.gov.uk Cllr Matthew Allen – matthew.allen@horsham.gov.uk

1st Broadbridge Heath Rainbows It is great to be back to face-to-face outdoor meetings with the girls. We have welcomed 7 new girls into our unit It has also gave us the chance to present 3 girls that are moving up to brownies with their well-earned gold awards which is the highest award a rainbow can earn. So far this term we have spent time up at our campsite discovering trees, exploring our village and cracking codes.
2nd Broadbridge Heath Guides Great to be back to face-to-face outdoor meetings with guides and we are delighted to welcome a couple of new girls to our unit. We have started the summer term at our campsite learning how to lay and light fire and backwoods cooking as well as cooking breaky in a paper bag. We have started our human-rights interest badge and beginning to learn knots ready for a pioneering project at our campsite after half term. Catch Up With The Broadbridge Bombshells WI What a strange time Covid has been, nothing has felt normal for anyone, least of all your local evening WI. So how have the Bombshells coped and what are our plans for a (fingers crossed) less restricted future? We kicked off 2020 ignorant of the chaos that was to come & enjoyed a couple of great face to face meetings: relaxing Quantum Meditation followed by a gin tasting extravaganza courtesy of Dorking distillery, The Gin Kitchen. Then Covid hit & we all realised we had to start ‘Zoom’ing to stay connected. First off there were hilarious, boozy Zoom quiz & games evenings, then an enlightening members show & tell night. But we soon realised that Zoom allowed us the perfect opportunity to branch out & invite speakers from all over the country to entertain & educate us… So we had a weird & wonderful talk on the world of law, listened to true ghost stories from a tour guide at Hampton Court Palace, made bath bombs & crafted along with some awesome teachers. We gurned with a Face Yoga teacher from the West Country and enjoyed a gripping talk on a devastating fire at a local stately home. A visit from a tarot card reader and a saucy talk about sex and salacious gossip at the royal court takes us up to date and the hope that June will see us back in St John’s Church Hall meeting with ‘Colour Me Beautiful’ and hopefully more face to face meetings including an introduction to Tai Chi, Cheeky Burlesque, Christmas Tips and Cocktails and our Christmas party.
We also continue to enjoy coffee mornings, book & wine club & are looking to the future where we hope to launch pudding club & cocktail club very soon! Take a look at our calendar, & if we sound like your cup of tea/glass of wine/slice of cake, then please email our President Rowena for further information on bbhwi1951@gmail.com and stay safe x

Ethical and Sustainable funds Investing Responsibly is becoming a far more common discussion with clients, and not just at Monetary Solutions. Research has shown that investments in this area have grown in the last 5 years*. But what does all the jargon mean? Ethical Investing – funds which focus on 'negative screening', for example, aiming to avoid investing in what could be viewed as 'bad stuff' such as tobacco, weapons and gambling. Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) – funds with a focus on environmental (eg climate change), social (eg diversity in recruitment practices, human rights or animal welfare) and governance of companies they are investing in (such as the ability for shareholders to vote on important issues). Socially Responsible Investing (SRI) – a blend of the above, where 'negative screening' is combined with identifying the companies that have good environmental, social and governance policies. Impact Investing – focusing on the outcome/impact of an organisation. Sustainable Investing – elements of all the above including both 'positive' and 'negative screening' and a focus on companies’ output and impact of their operations on the environment. Choosing which funds to use will depend on the result you are trying to achieve and how specific you want to be, for example whether you want to avoid a certain type of company or whether you just want to invest responsibly.
