Traffic Calming Update The traffic calming works are working their way through the village, starting at Shelley Drive mini roundabout which is now completed and then at the junction with Warnham Road near the Post Office moving east towards the Farthings Hill roundabout. There is no fixed timescale for each element of the traffic calming, but they have a 15 week programme to get all of the works done. Subject to weather conditions, this should be complete by mid April. •New mini roundabout on Billingshurst Road at the junction with Shelley Drive. •Improvements, adjacent to the post office •Billingshurst Road/Old Guildford Road, advisory cycle lanes and centreline removal. •Sleets Road mini roundabout improvements Malcolm Curnock Memorial Bench In recognition of the huge contribution to the village made by our longest serving Councillor, Malcolm Curnock, the Parish Council has installed a memorial bench on the triangle of land between Billingshurst Road and Old Guildford Road. Malcolm was extremely committed to Broadbridge Heath and his dedication, enthusiasm and service to the village and the Parish Council never waned.

The Parish Council hope that the bench erected in his honour will be enjoyed by many, providing not only a nice seat to rest for a moment to watch the world go by but also a place where Malcolm's friends and family can sit for a while and remember him. Malcolm's wife Lin and his family are extremely proud of the tribute the Parish Council has paid to Malcolm and were probably the first to go and view. Lin commented, 'It's in a lovely spot, where one can view life coming and going, in what is now the oldest part of the village, but also secluded enough to be able to sit and enjoy one's own thoughts.” 3

2018 marks 100 years since women were allowed to vote and it’s no coincidence that the official WI colours are the same as those adopted by the suffragettes - purple for dignity, white for purity and green for hope. Many of the women involved in setting up the National Federation of Women’s Institutes were suffragettes who saw the WI as a way of educating women and encouraging them to participate in public life. To deflect the image of masculinity that suffragettes were accused of, they were encouraged to be feminine in their appearance, often wearing white dresses in delicate fabrics, with purple and green sashes. Leading suffragettes, Emmeline Pankhurst (pictured) and her daughters Christabel, a lawyer, and Sylvia (who designed the tricolour sashes, banners and jewellery) were jailed many times and suffered lasting poor health as a result. Around 1,000 suffragettes were imprisoned, many refusing food in protest at not being designated as political prisoners. They would be released so they didn’t die in custody then re-arrested. Later, prisons began force-feeding them. It was violent and painful, causing long-term damage to their physical and mental health. The first WI National Chairman was Lady Denman (pictured here in 1930). An active supporter of the suffragists, she was also the first Chairman of the Family Planning Association, President of the Ladies Golf Union and, at the outbreak of World War II, she was made Director of the Women's Land Army. Education remains at the heart of WI and the WI’s residential adult education college, founded in 1948 and named Denman, runs over 600 different courses. The vision is to offer the best in adult liberal education - inspiring women. Broadbridge Heath WI contact: wi.broadbridgeheath@talktalk.net Wendy Griffin, 01403 217152 or Gill Axby, 01403 266525 5

Parish Point Of View Kate Bailey. Curate, St John’s Church, Broadbridge Heath, Church Road, RH12 3LD 01403 274114 info@stjohnsbbh.org.uk www.stjohnsbbh.org.uk Children, families and people of all ages are welcome. I love Spring . . . but right now I am typing this in February, with the winter rain and dinginess outside, and no sign of Spring flowers in my garden at all. I think that they are still struggling with waterlogged roots after all the rain this winter! But you can’t stop the seasons. Spring IS on its way, soon the daffodils will be a blaze of yellow everywhere, and the trees will start to bud, and we will know that not only Spring is coming, but the days will be getting longer, the weather warmer (hopefully!) with all that Spring has to offer ahead of us. First of all, though, we have Lent . . . the time when Christians remember that Jesus resisted temptation in the desert and try to follow his leading. Some people give up eating things like chocolate, biscuits or cakes, denying themselves their regular yummy treats! Others, myself included, give up something else which takes up a lot of their time, freeing them up to think more about what faith means to them, and how they can put this faith into practice. Lent gives me more time to stop being so busy, time to sit and read one of those books which I’ve bought or borrowed, but never quite got round to finishing . . or in some cases even starting! Reading, whether in a printed book, on a Kindle or other device, is a great way of slowing down, and in these long winter evenings when there is precious little to watch on TV, snuggling up on the sofa with a good book is quite a cathartic practice to follow. Reading the Bible is a daily discipline you can follow no matter what time of year, and there is a great App entitled “Bible in One Year” – a reading plan and thoughts by Nicky Gumbel, the author of the Alpha course – which I try to read first thing in the mornings. Reading the Bible leads into prayer, and as daylight is getting earlier with each passing day, it’s a great way to ease into the routine of your day – maybe with a cup of tea or coffee at your side, before the busy-ness of your daily life begins. As we head through Lent towards Spring, towards Easter, my prayer for all of us is that we find some time to slow down, to focus on God, and to appreciate His creation all around us. God Bless, Kate 7

BBH Mag Sport

News from local sports clubs.

If you would like to publish your sports news in this magazine please contact the Editor by email: bbh.mag@gmail.com FOOTBALL Broadbridge Heath Football Club The rain has caused major problems for all our teams since the turn of the year with pitches home and away waterlogged and the result is that many of our teams have not played any football matches at all since before Christmas. The first team have played the most matches despite the horrendous conditions, we lost 2-0 to Chichester City in the semi-final of the Sussex RUR Cup which brings an end to the teams hopes of silverware this season and it's now just a case of winning enough points to secure a mid-table position by the end of April. Our Reserve team have played just two league games since the 2nd December, drawing 0-0 at Horsham YMCA and then defeating Steyning Town by 4-3 on their 3G pitch. The Under 18s have played one game more but the long break has done them no favours having lost two of the last three matches and drawing the other game bringing an end to their hopes of winning the title.

The juniors have hardly played any matches since November and already the Under 14s have been told they must play double-headers in their matches in order to get the fixtures complete before the end of April and at this stage of the season that is unheard of, surely it can't keep raining.... can it! On the plus side work on the clubs new pavilion is now making good progress, the developers Sunninghill are keeping the club regularly updated and at the time of writing the base access road is in place, the pavilion foundations are complete and this week the developers have started masonry work, unless there are major delays (e.g. the rain never stops) they aim to complete the pavilion early August. This probably means that the club will have to start the new season playing matches at the Leisure Centre until the new ground has passed the FA Ground Grading inspection.

First Team Fixtures: 24 Feb Home v East Preston, K.O. 3.00 03 Mar Away v Pagham, K.O. 3.00 10 Mar Home v Three Bridges, K.O. 3.00 17 Mar Home v Haywards Heath Town, K.O. 3.00 For more information about Broadbridge Heath FC please visit our website or see Twitter of Facebook @thebearsbbhfc www.pitchero.com/clubs/broadbridgeheathfc 8

CRICKET

Broadbridge Heath Cricket Club

Byfleets Lane Broadbridge Heath West Sussex RH12 3PB www. broadbridgeheath.play-cricket.com Looking out my window at the driving rain and strong, cold winds, it’s hard to imagine that the cricket season starts in about 10 weeks. Don’t be fooled by the crocuses and daffodils being early this year and Southern Water already warning of drought. It’s very wet out there and is going to take a long time to dry out. So, no thoughts yet of starting work on the ground at the Top Common but expect to see us out there during March. Meanwhile, our adult team captains are working hard to find additional players to support our two teams this season. Indoor nets are up and running and some of those have been taking place successfully at the professional facilities at the County Ground in Hove. As many of you will know, Fred Bridges has been a strong playing member of the club for many years and his bowling success has been recognised at international level with the England Disability Team. Unfortunately, that meant that England wanted him to play a higher standard of weekend cricket so he has joined recent county champions Roffey on a permanent basis and that means that he can no longer lead our Juniors. So, for the coming season, Andy White and Sarah Tyrell are going to lead the U14s and arrangements are still being made for the U12s and U10s. Junior indoor nets are now running on Fridays so if you do have children who would like to give cricket a try, please contact Sarah direct or Andy White at apcwhite@yahoo.co.uk.

After the Christmas break, our indoor league team has resumed where it left off 2017. They have now beaten the previously undefeated Ifield A and Crawley A and both those strong county clubs must wonder why BBH have had such a recent poor time of it in outdoor cricket. Batting second seems to suit us at the moment and Tom Endacott has continued his strong batting performances, hopefully a good omen for when he takes-over as 1st XI captain this summer. Most readers will, I hope, have seen the article about us in the Parish Council’s Winter Magazine and that gave a potted history about our long established club. We have a strong tradition and a lovely village ground with good facilities so if any readers would like to join our adult or junior teams, please contact me at colincase@aol.com. Colin Case HORSHAM DISTRICT INDOOR BOWLS CLUB We would like to invite local residents to come and have go at bowling on our Bowls 4 Fun Wednesday evenings, from 19.00 to 21.30, until April 18th There will be two free taster sessions with any subsequent visits costing £3 which is a concessionary rate because it's the same price that members pay. 2nd Broadbridge Heath Guides This term at Guides we have been very busy! On our first week back after the Christmas holidays we did our five senses Go For It. We did various activities on the senses. For smell we smelt different substances, for taste we guessed the food by a description, for sight we had to spell out letter by feeling stones in an egg box which represented braille, for hearing we listen to everyday sounds and guessed what they were and finally for touch we guessed what the object were in a bag without looking. Also this term we have looked at the right to be me resource. We completed lots of activities. One of them was making a quilt. We all got a square and on the patch we got to sew what represented us. On our final week of half term we made pancakes. We got to have many different flavours on them and it was lots of fun!

News from the Friends of Shelley School (FOSS) The FOSS Committee are bounding into Spring with a host of forthcoming fund-raising events. Firstly, we have the always popular and well supported Spring Disco for the children; this will be followed by two more Film Nights, and also scheduled on the horizon is the FOSS/ Shelley School Sponsored Walk, which produces both fun and funds in equal measure. This year it will take place on May 4th ('May the FOSS be with you'), weather allowing, after that same weather caused its postponement from the previous September. If you are approached by a small, school-aged friend or relative for sponsorship, please be generous; the pupils put their hearts, souls and shoe leather into this one! Also planned is a Race Night, and of course the Summer Fete (for which we are already accepting raffle prizes) - watch this space for details! As always, the committee is contactable on fosspta17@gmail.com for comments, suggestions and particularly donations. Our village school is a wonderful asset; and with your help we can continue to enhance and treasure it! Rodena, Chair, FOSS. 12

Toasties Youth Club; two volunteers needed. The Youth Club is open from 6.30pm to 8pm, Friday evenings (term time only) at St John's Community Hall, Church Road, BBH. Volunteering hours are from 6pm to 8.30pm on Fridays (term time only). You will help set up activities, supervise our young people during the session and clearing up at the end of the session. How involved you get during the session is entirely up to you. Maybe you would love to run an activity, play board games with our young people, just chat to our young people or just supervise, making sure that our young people are safe. Currently, our team of volunteers do 2 sessions every 6 weeks but once we achieve a team of 12 volunteers then this will be reduced to 1 session every 6 weeks.

You will need to complete an application form and a DBS check. Please contact Donna Dwyer on: donna.dwyer@horsham-matters.org.uk or mobile: 07867 387466 or 01403 581962. ————————————————————————————————————A School Council Report from Pupils at Shelley Primary School School Council members have been busy with four projects. Firstly, members of the Council are volunteering at the early Bird Café, St John’s church for a period of time each Tuesday morning. Volunteers help to serve cold drinks and toast and even get involved with the washing up too! The customers report positively on their manners and enthusiasm. Secondly, the Council recently conducted a school survey canvassing opinions about how playtimes could be made more interesting through investing in more play equipment. These results are currently being collated, ready to be forwarded to Mrs Fitzscott soon. Thirdly, Rachel’s winning design for a logo to match our school values is now proudly displayed on the wall in our reception area. Mrs Sparling worked with School Council members to skilfully paint the design and we think you will agree that our Shelley Owls are looking very good indeed. Finally, the School Council are beginning to think of ways in which they could produce a video promoting all of the positive aspects of the school. They are planning to interview other children with the intention of the film being used on the school website. Keep watching out for our updates at www.shelley.w-sussex.sch.uk 13

Karen

MacDonald

The Financial Fairy Godmother of Broadbridge Heath

Who will make decisions when you can’t? Any of us could find ourselves out of action without warning, unable to make decisions about our money or our health. This might be temporary, e.g. following a car accident or during an extended holiday, or more permanent, with a condition such as stroke or dementia. If this happens, no-one has the automatic right to make decisions for us, even our spouse, so a Lasting Power of Attorney enables another person to make decisions on your behalf if you lack the capacity to do it yourself. This can happen to anybody, any time, and therefore we ALL need a Power of Attorney in place. We can’t stress enough how important this is. A Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) is a legal document that let you (the ‘Donor’) appoint people (known as ‘Attorneys’) to make decisions on your behalf. LPAs replaced Enduring Powers of Attorney which can still be used if they were made and signed prior to October 2007. There are two types of LPA, for ‘Health and Welfare’ and ‘Property and Financial Affairs’. There is a one-off cost to put these in place, but the cost is greater if you do not, as then the Court of Protection will appoint someone else for you as your Deputy, with annual fees. Some good news for those who registered LPAs or EPAs from April 2013-March 2017 – as registration fees have now reduced, you can get a refund of some of the fee you paid back then – see https://www.gov.uk/power-of-attorney-refund. It’s a very simple claim process, and you can claim until 31 January 2021. Although we recommend ALL individuals have an LPA, we as Independent Financial Advisers do not advise on these legal documents, although we can direct you to people qualified to help you.
