BBH Mag Editorial column. BBH Mag is published by “BBH Community Publications” a non-profit making society run by volunteers for the benefit of the community of Broadbridge Heath. FRONT PAGE STORY: This village, our village, is full of amazing people with great enthusiasm for our community of Broadbridge Heath. For example: the widely respected Headmaster of Shelley Primary school, David Bird, has given much to the school and the village in his 14 years there. Now he has announced his retirement and he will be greatly missed by parents, staff and pupils. Fully story on page 9. We also have some amazing sports people and this month’s news that the go-ahead has at last been given for new facilities for the village football club will be welcomed by many. See page 6 of our Sports pages for details. The team at BBH Mag publish this magazine and distribute it to every local home because we too believe in that same community spirit—and we want to encourage it. Some reputable scientists claim that they evolved into birds. So the pretty timid little creatures that we admire in our gardens were once dinosaurs. Monsters have become our feathered friends. In a few weeks’ time, we shall be celebrating Easter. Now the basic symbol of Christianity, the cross, was an instrument of torture. Crucifixion was one of the most painful forms of execution ever devised. If we find dinosaurs repugnant, how much more should we be repelled by the cross. And yet, we’re not. Just as the dinosaurs may have changed into something innocent and beautiful, so Christians believe that, because Jesus allowed himself to be killed to rescue us all, the cross has become a symbol of life and victory. The dinosaurs may not have died; Christians believe as an absolute fact that Jesus died and rose again. Through his death and resurrection, he offers forgiveness and a new and richer kind of life to anyone who accepts him. That’s something to think about during Lent. But now I need to go and top up the dinosaur bath. 4

Coping with the News Every day we hear unsettling or frightening news, it’s not always “out there somewhere” divorced from out own personal worlds either. Some of it is close by and very much part of our experience. In ‘The Hobbit’, Tolkien’s prequel to the ‘Lord of the Rings’ trilogy, Bilbo Baggins and his friends finally find the riches they were searching for. But then, almost immediately, the cold dark mountain began to rumble. Smaug, the evil dragon had been aggravated. Tolkien perceptively adds this line: ‘It does not do to leave a dragon out of your calculations, if you live near him’. The trouble is, we’re always close to ‘dragons’. There are dragons of our own making - things that we’ve said or done that have caused ructions. Sometimes they are dragons that have suddenly reared their ugly heads - illness, sudden death, unemployment or financial difficulties. And the end result is that we find ourselves surrounded by pressures that create a perpetual chaos in our lives, bringing stress, conflict, fear, guilt and even shame. What we need is peace. Did you know that Jesus made a will? At least, He uses the language of a last will and testament. He says to His disciples: “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid”. He said that in Aramaic and it was written down eventually in Greek. In both languages the word that is translated into English as ‘leave’, “my peace I leave with you” is the word ‘bequeath’. Something you record for those who are left behind when you die. In other words Jesus’ dying wish for the people around Him (and those who would come after) in the midst of the worries and tensions of living in an occupied country - was: I can give you peace in a way that no-one else can. Elsewhere He describes it as a “peace that defies understanding” a peace that you can have and be utterly confused as to why you should have it. Of course, anyone can have peace in peaceful situations. But a peace that can amaze you when everything is falling apart - personally, locally, nationally, internationally, physically, mentally any other ‘lly’ you can come up with - that’s worth having isn’t it? Jesus said: come to me if things are weighing you down. Give me your troubles, and I will refresh you, I will give you rest and peace. Why not do that? ——————————————————————St John’s Church, Broadbridge Heath, Church Road, RH12 3LD 01403 274114 info@stjohnsbbh.org.uk

BBH Mag Sport

News from local sports clubs.

If you would like to publish your sports news in this magazine please contact the Editor by email: bbh.mag@gmail.com FOOTBALL The good news for the club is that planning permission for our new facilities, with three grass pitches, a pavilion, stands and floodlights was approved by the HDC Development Control Committee on the 6th February. It's been common knowledge that the club has been seeking our own facilities away from the Leisure Centre for the best part of 20 years and that opportunity came in 2004/2005 with the announcement that around 1,000 homes were to be built on land south of the village and long before the first brick was laid, members of the club had meetings with our Parish Council, the District Council, the Developers and Sport England. We attended every meeting, every workshop, completed every survey and made it very clear from the beginning that we wanted facilities for the seniors and juniors, with a first team pitch to satisfy the ground grading requirements for Step 5 football. As a result, our requirements for a new ground with pavilion and pitches were included in the site Master Plan and subsequently in the Section 106 Agreement. It's taken a very long time to get to this stage and there have been many highs and lows along the way but we now hope construction on the new pavilion will start as soon as April. Meanwhile on the pitch the weather in recent weeks has resulted in a number of postponements, the first team remain sixth in the Southern Combination League Premier Division, their cup semi-final against Haywards Heath Town will be played at Steyning on Tuesday 7th March and it would be good to see as many of you as possible at the game cheering on the Bears. The Reserve team lost a league match for the first time this season at Lingfield on the 14 January but they remain top of their division and still have a cup semi-final to look forward to. The weather hasn't been too kind for the junior teams with a lot of lost games as a result of either frozen or waterlogged pitches but off the field it's been a very busy time trying to get our coaches through the necessary courses in order to maintain our FA Charter status. If you would like to join our friendly team of volunteers, then we would really like to hear from you whether it's juniors or seniors we have a role waiting for you. Next first team fixtures as follows: Sat 25 Feb, Away v Haywards Heath Town, K.O. 3.00 Sat 04 Mar, Home v Chichester City, K.O. 3.00 Sat 07 Feb, Away v Haywards Heath Town. Peter Bentley Cup, K.O. 7.45 6

CRICKET

Broadbridge Heath Cricket Club

Byfleets Lane Broadbridge Heath West Sussex RH12 3PB www. broadbridgeheath.play-cricket.com I’m not going to try and compete with the very long-awaited fabulous news elsewhere in this magazine and the local press of the football club’s new premises. As one of the old-timers who used to play for the Club behind the Shelley Arms after changing in an old cow shed, these are heady days indeed and enough praise cannot be written about the great work by the Club’s Committee, some of whom have been there for many decades and have overcome so many obstacles. Here at the Cricket Club, we can certainly emphasise strongly with the substantial work required by long standing Committee members to develop sports facilities so many congratulations from one village sports club to another. Meanwhile, we are making our own plans for the coming cricket season which believe -it-or not, will start in approx 6 weeks from when you read this. Jordan Ruff and Ian Stocker are leading the respective 1st and 2nd XIs again this season and they will be expecting to maintain their strong showings from previous seasons. Off the field, matters are still unsettled regarding a lead groundsman. So far, we have been unable to find a successor to take forward the excellent work done by David Bridges so, at the moment, it’s likely that the groundstaff team who supported David are going to try their best to include doing the wicket preparation too. If any readers do know of anyone who would like to lead-manage the cricket square for us this season then we would love to hear from you. Just go through our web site at: http://broadbridgeheath.play-cricket.com/ Finally, our pre-season indoor adult nets have started at Forest Boys School. Each Sunday, 09.00 to 10.30. We run 2 x Saturday league teams + 1 Sunday/mid-week XI so any abilities welcome. Details of junior indoor nets to follow. Also, during the summer at the village ‘Top Common,’ we have stoolball + tennis too ! Colin Case ——————————————————————————————————————

Shelley Primary School head teacher to retire after 37 years. David Bird, the much respected head teacher of Shelley primary school has announced his intention to retire in July this year. In a letter to parents, later posted on Facebook, he said he had enjoyed (almost) every minute of his 14 years at Shelley. His career spans 37 years as a teacher, deputy head and head teacher. He will be much missed by parents and children who posted notes on the Broadbridge Heath Voice Facebook page. One parent said "So sad, he's an amazing man" and another said "I have huge respect for him and the way he has led the school - a huge loss to the village community but wish him every happiness into the future. I hope there will (be) an opportunity as a community to thank him before he leaves" 9

2nd Broadbridge Heath Brownies Some of our older Brownies who have reached 10 will be moving onto Guides shortly. Here are some of their accounts of what they like of Brownies. Grace Age 10 At Brownies we do lots of fun things such as playing, going on adventures and exploring new things. Brownies is the best part of my Monday. We start at 5.30pm to 7pm. At Christmas we have a Christmas party. We get to wear what we want and have lots of party food, it is always great fun. We also have very lovely Leaders who are called Barn Owl, Tawny Owl, Badger and Squirrel. They take care of all the girls and make sure we are all safe. So I hope this has made you girls out there think about coming to Brownies and I hope to see you there. Jo Pratt Brownie Leader and Joint District Commissioner 2nd Broadbridge Heath Guides and Rangers Sparkle and Ice Winter Camp We camped overnight at Blacklands Farm in East Grinstead on a cold and very muddy weekend in February. We took part in a variety of activities such as high ropes, team building and nightline. In nightline we were blindfolded and had to go through obstacles. During the evening we had a fun disco then watched an amazing firework display. We then sat around the campfire and told stories and sang songs. At night it was very cold and we filled ourselves up with hot chocolate, we had hot water bottles and snuggled up with our camp blankets.

The Financial Fairy Godmother of Broadbridge Heath

Managing Your Savings Do you know how much interest you’re getting on your savings? Do you know how much would be protected by the FSCS (Financial Services Compensation Scheme)? Not long ago few people knew, but with interest rates at an all-time low and the realisation that banks and building societies can go bust, awareness has changed. Most of our clients with larger cash deposits could now answer these questions. Managing your cash is time consuming. The FSCS limit increased in January 2017 to £85,000. Good news, but you must be careful because one limit can cover more than one provider. For example, Saga, Halifax and Birmingham Midshires are all part of the Bank of Scotland Group, and share one £85,000 limit. You may get better interest rates in fixed term accounts. But you have to remember maturity dates and research new options once they mature. There used to be little that we as Financial Advisers could do to help. Managing cash was so time-consuming that the charges we would have to make would have outweighed the savings. But all this has changed, because we now have software to help manage your cash. It helps us ensure you get competitive rates, but also checks you keep within the FSCS and alerts us to maturity dates. It is a vital tool, not just for individuals but also for trustees whose funds have large cash holdings and obligations to the beneficiary to get competitive rates. We often see clients who do not want to tie up all their funds and we can now advise on cash deposits effectively..
