2nd Broadbridge Heath Guides This month the guides have made their own board games. In patrols they made up their own rules and instructions before creating their boards and testing their games.

1st Broadbridge Heath Rainbows The Rainbows have enjoyed a fantastic experimental evening. The girls found out which materials are magnetic and made a paper clip walk . They successfully made a piece of blue tack float. Watched the reaction of the combination of bicarbonate of soda and vinegar and saw how long a flame lasts without oxygen.

Clemsfold District At the beginning of the term we held a district day for all our rainbows, brownies and guides. This event was organised by our rainbow young leader and guide adult leader in training. The morning had a fun fair theme and they organised several activities for the girls including; a photo booth, popcorn making, blow football, coconut shy, hoopla and finished with a game of cat and mouse. We are very proud to say that our leader in training has now completed her leadership qualification.

1st Broadbridge Heath Scouts is a thriving group for young people aged from 6 to 14 years. We have three sections (Beavers, Cubs and Scouts) and many BBH youngsters join as Beavers and progress through the sections, learning valuable life skills along the way. Our team of amazing volunteer leaders and assistant leaders, supported by our team of committee members, keep things running. We couldn’t do it without them. We are always looking for volunteers to support the group sessions and currently have a couple of vacancies on our committee for anyone wishing to help the group through admin and fundraising. If you are interested in coming along to our next committee meeting to find out more (we only have one meeting every couple of months) please contact Paula Flack (Chairman) on Tel 01403 791453 or drop Paula an email to

Our next fundraiser is a cabaret evening in Broadbridge Heath Village Centre on Saturday 16 March 2019. Tickets are available through EventBrite (https:// bit.ly/2TH6haQ). It promises to be a fun evening of music and dance. Many local acts are performing. Our line-up includes KDF, Louise Griffin, Point Nemo and Jake Tait. There should also be space for the audience to have a boogie in the second half of the evening as Point Nemo perform. The funds we raise will help us redecorate the Scout Hall and perform some general maintenance. The hall is a vital resource for the Broadbridge Heath community, but it’s an old building and needs some TLC. We have recently carried out extensive renovations and purchased much need equipment for our children to enjoy during their Scout sessions. As a result our funds are in much need of a boost. If you are unable to attend the Cabaret evening but would still like make a donation, you can do that through the Eventbrite ticket site (https://bit.ly/2TH6haQ ). We will also run an exciting raffle on the night with prizes generously donated by several local businesses, including PMW, Barnetts Barbers, Co-op on Guildford Road and Bodymould Mattresses. We hope to see you soon! ====================================

BBH Mag Sport

News from local sports clubs.

If you would like to publish your sports news in this magazine please contact the Editor by email: bbh.mag@gmail.com FOOTBALL Broadbridge Heath Football Club The rain has caused havoc to the February fixture list, no games yet for the first team who have slipped to 8th place in the Premier division but with 12 games remaining the team has already passed last season points total. The Reserve team have turned their season round and remain unbeaten so far this year with one win and two draws, they still have a lot to do to avoid the dreaded relegation but the manager believes that with the players he now has they can do it. The Under 23 matches have been few and far between with just 3 league matches played since the 18th October but weather permitting they should now be playing every week to catch up on their fixtures. The Under 18 team have found the going tough, the entire team were playing Under 16 football last season in the Horsham Youth League and it's a big jump from that to playing Under 18 football in the Southern Combination League. The juniors have been picking up some trophies in recent weeks, the Under 11s won the Horsham Youth League Futsal tournament and 2 weeks later the Under 14s did the same in the Mid-Sussex Youth League they will now go forward to represent the league in national finals to be played in Birmingham. So well done to all those players and coaches involved. Off the field, what can I say about our new facilities that hasn't been said many times before? The latest date for transfer of the facilities to the football club was the 8th February but once again the developers failed to complete the work on time and so the District Council, quite rightly, refused to accept it. The pitches which we were assured would be ready for the start of the season (August 2018) are still not ready and some experts we've had in recently have said they need a considerable amount of work done before anyone can start playing on them which basically rules out this season and that means we're no closer to playing on those pitches today than we were 12 months ago. All very frustrating for everyone involved. Meanwhile if you want to catch a match our first team fixtures include: 9th Mar Home to Shoreham K.O. 3.00 16th Mar Home to Eastbourne Town K.O. 3.00 For more information on Broadbridge Heath FC please visit our website at http:// www.bbh-fc.com 6

CRICKET

Broadbridge Heath Cricket Club Byfleets Lane Broadbridge Heath West Sussex RH12 3PB http://broadbridgeheath.play-cricket.com/home/home.asp

Not unexpectedly, cricket is quiet for news at this time of the year so this is our first article for 2019. However, as I’m writing this there’s not a cloud in the sky and there are convertible cars going passed with their roofs down – in the middle of February ! If it’s like last year we’ll be playing outdoors in about 8 weeks time. Meanwhile, indoors, the Crawley league continues and our team’s performance keeps going well too as we comprehensively beat Crawley ‘B’ with Dany Xavier staring with the bat and Shaji Philip with the ball. Also, our practice nets have started at the fabulous indoor facilities at the county ground at Hove, now called the 1st Central County Ground after their sponsors. We meet there every Friday evening for a good, intensive session and some bonding afterwards so if anyone would like to join us please contact us through the above website. Just like the football club and other community organisations in the ever growing village, we do need new players of all ages and members to help with the essential administration and ground maintenance. Please contact us if you feel you can take part in any way. Finally, I mentioned the Big Bash in Australia in my last article and it’s the final the weekend of writing. It might be my imagination but I don’t think the scores have been as big this year and it’s good to see spinners making their mark. Next up it’s the IPL (Indian Premier League) which starts next month so let’s see if the scoring trend continues. Colin Case

Parish Point of View Brian New, Assistant Priest, St John’s Church, Broadbridge Heath, Church Road, RH12 3LD office@stjohnsbbh.org.uk www.stjohnsbbh.org.uk Children, families and people of all ages are welcome. Jesus went into Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God. “The time has come,” he said. “The kingdom of God has come near. Repent and believe the good news!” These are the words by which Mark, who wrote one of the gospels, really introduces us to Jesus and the reason for his coming. Mark skips over the nativity stories and Jesus’ childhood and starts with him bursting onto the Galilean scene with something of a “bang”. Jesus came to tell us that God was doing something new in history – coming to earth as a human to show us the way to having a living and loving relationship with Him. People often get hung up about Christianity – worried that it’s all about rules, giving things up, doing good deeds, being rather dull and, frankly, stuck in the past. But Jesus came, very simply, so that we can know God, experience his love and be assured that we are all here for a reason. That’s why he says in the passage above – see the kingdom of God is near, so turn around (which is what “repent” means), see for yourselves and believe. Billions of people over the years since Jesus said these words have done just that – they’ve turned around, seen a whole new perspective and their lives have been transformed with the love and guidance of God. Yes, it takes a step of faith, but it’s a well-trodden path. As we start the church season of Lent – beginning with Ash Wednesday on the 6th March – don’t think about what you’re going to give up for Lent; rather consider Jesus’ words above and think about what you may do that could completely change your view of life and find that there really is “good news” in the person of Jesus. ———————What is happening at the vicarage? Why has it been let? “As you may have noticed, St John’s House in Church Road has a “Let” sign outside it. The diocese, to whom the house belongs, have decided to rent the house out for a short-term let while the process of advertising for and appointing a new Vicar for Broadbridge Heath takes place. Please join us in praying, if you would like to, for this appointment process.” ———————————Praying for Our Local Streets. At St John’s Church, we are praying every month for a set of roads in the village. If you would like something prayed for, email us: office@stjohnsbbh.org.uk This month we are praying for: Billingshurst Road, Charrington Way, Pelling Way, Sargent Way, Farriers Walk 9

Last month I promised to tell you more about how the WI was responsible for Country Markets.

In 1915, during the First World War, WIs began helping with food supply, showing how to preserve by bottling, canning and jam making – hence the label that has stuck to us for over 100 years! But shortages in food supplies meant people had to produce their own so everyone was encouraged to ‘Dig for Victory’ and gardening - our favourite pastime, became important for survival. In war time, almost every available plot, from disused gardens to land along railway lines and even royal parks, was requisitioned for the production of food (Next time you go for a walk or even into your garden, you could be strolling over ground that once grew the food that fed the nation). And so began our enthusiasm for allotments as ownership rose from 450,000 before the war, to 1.5 million by May of 1917. In 1919 WIs set up markets (the first was in Lewes), selling homemade baked goods, preserves, garden-grown fruit and vegetables, plants and handmade crafts - almost anything local and seasonal that could be produced in a domestic kitchen or garden (see the picture above). Before long more local WI markets opened and in time they were no longer restricted to WI members, allowing allotment holders, smallholders and cottage gardeners to sell their surplus produce - an example of co-operative marketing that prevented food waste as well as helping people to earn some much needed money. Eventually, these local co-operatives were registered under the Industrial and Provident Friendly Societies Act and the producers (men and women) became shareholders by buying a share for one shilling (5p). Amazingly, it still only costs 5p to become a member! The WI is a 'not for profit' organisation which became a charity in 1990 so the markets separated and became 'WI Country Markets Ltd', a self financing business which was turning over £10million a year. In 2004 the use of the ‘WI’ initials was discontinued and 100 years later, around 250 Country Markets continue to thrive across England and Wales. And staying with food, you’ll be very welcome to our next meeting (2.30pm, 12 March at St John’s Hall) if you’d like to learn about Wiltshire Farm Foods home deliveries of over 300 ready meals. Or contact us for more information. Our details are on the back cover. 10

The need to alleviate loneliness is close to the hearts of every WI. There are nine million lonely people in the UK. Many find constant loneliness hardest to overcome. They lack the friendship and support we all need.

At the WI annual Meeting held in June 2017, resolution to ‘alleviate loneliness’ received huge support from members. This resolution aims to ensure that people who are lonely, or at risk of loneliness, are identified and have access to the support and assistance they need. Many feel unable to tell someone or seek support and without which research shows loneliness can have a damaging effect on a person’s mental health, physical health and overall wellbeing.

FIVE WAYS TO WELLBEING Connect with family, friends, colleagues and neighbours. Be Active find something that works for you and suits your level of activity. Take Notice and time to notice what’s going on around you. Keep Learning decide on a new skill to lean or pick up an old one that can help build confidence. Give your time and help to others. One act of kindness can improve your mental wellbeing and strengthen relationships. At the Broadbridge Bombshells WI we actively participate in all these five ways. If you have read our monthly articles in the BBH Mag you will know that we are always up to something entertaining and interesting. We were strangers but are now friends who come together on the last Tuesday of every month to have fun and to experience something new. 7 Ways To Make New Friends: Identify Opportunities (our WI); Follow your interests (we have lots!); Allow yourself to be vulnerable (we are all regularly vulnerable); Use technology (check out our website, Facebook, twitter); Join a choir (WI has a great one); Don’t put too much pressure on it (if you can’t make every meeting, don’t stress it!); Ask questions and listen (participate or just sit back and enjoy the cakes) - Amy Sedghi, The Guardian (Feb 2019)

Don’t be shy, come along, meet us, make new friends and create new interests!

The Financial Fairy Godmother

of Broadbridge Heath

Is it time for a financial health check? This is the busiest time of our year as the end of the tax year is approaching. It’s an ideal time to review investments. We suggest: Review your interest charges on any outstanding debts and check to see if there is anything you are paying for which you no longer need. Complete a financial health check. We look at monthly expenditure and take this away from your monthly income to see what your disposable income is. You may be surprised by how much surplus there is. Review your investments. For savings accounts check the interest rate is still competitive. Look at your investment funds. There are companies who analyse investment funds and rate them, for example Financial Express (FE). FE Crown Fund Ratings enable investors to distinguish between funds that are outperforming the benchmark against those that are not. For example the top 10% of funds are awarded five FE Crowns and so on. See what crown ratings your funds have. Finally, as we are at the end of the tax year, consider if you are being tax efficient. Have you utilised your ISA allowance? Could you pay more into a pension? Have you utilised your personal allowance? You may prefer to seek advice from a financial adviser. I see myself as a sounding board. I can discuss with you the issues I have addressed above and help you to decide how to plan for your future. Karen MacDonald is an independent financial adviser with Monetary Solutions Limited (www.monetarysolutions.co.uk) For a free initial consultation about this or any other financial matters please call 01403 288078 or email karen@monetarysolutions.co.uk. The information in this article is for information only and must not be considered as financial advice. We always recommend that you seek independent financial advice before making any financial decisions. The value of your investment can go down as well as up and you may get back less than you have put in.
