BBH Mag Editorial column.
LETTERS TO THE EDITOR. We’ve received many kind and encouraging comments about BBH Mag. Readers have told us that they are glad that there is a magazine for the village community. Others have responded to our recent campaigns. A few months ago we pointed out that there is no accurate map for the village now that the new houses have been built. BBH resident Dan Gregory dan.anthony.gregory@gmail.com has lead a group of local map making volunteers and they have published a map on the web at OpenStreetMap, which can be found at www.openstreetmap.org/#map=16/51.0640/0.3660 . Well done, Dan. Keep up the good work. Last month we featured the introduction of a new bus service for the village. Andrea Davies wrote to us at bbh.mag@gmail.com to say “Great news about bus service. But why are we not allowed out in the evenings? Why can't we get a service like Southwater, where you could go out for a meal and have a few drinks?” . ——————————— YOUR VILLAGE MAGAZINE. The BBH Mag is the community magazine for Broadbridge Heath published by local volunteers and distributed free to the whole village. That's nearly 2000 houses; and the village is growing fast with the new housing development, Wickhurst Green. If you're a local resident, or a member of a village club or voluntary group; send us your news and your events. We’ll be delighted to include it in the magazine, free of charge. Email: bbh.mag@gmail.com
It pays to advertise in BBH Magazine. Our advertisers are pleased with the service we offer them. We deliver to every house in the village and we’re keen to encourage local businesses. Our advertising rates are very reasonable. Contact us for details…... Email: advertising.bbh.mag@gmail.com Post: BBH Mag, 3, Pinewood Close, Broadbridge Heath, RH12 3TP BBH Mag is published by “BBH Community Publications” a non-profit making society run by volunteers for the benefit of the community of Broadbridge Heath.

News from Shelley Primary School We hope that all our children and their families had a peaceful and relaxing Easter break, they have certainly returned to school for the summer term ready to learn. Whilst May is a fairly ‘academic’ month in terms of the children’s activities in school, we still have plenty else to look forward to during the warmer months ahead. We are happy to be taking part in the Broadbridge Heath Leisure Centre mini-sports festival and all year groups will have the chance to attend a morning or afternoon session. Our dedicated PTA, FOSS, is already beginning the task of organising our annual summer fete – please put the date in your diaries for a fantastic evening of family fun: Friday 24th June! We will also be busy in school preparing to welcome our new reception children for their first visits. As you may be aware, our reception intake this year will be larger than in previous years and this will mean that our classes will be organised in a slightly different structure. Please be assured that we will keep parents and carers fully informed and that, as always, our staff are dedicated to providing a caring and stimulating environment for all the children in our care. Broadbridge Heath Rainbows, Brownies, Guides and Rangers. Sharon Newman Guide and Ranger leader and District 2ND Broadbridge Heath Guides and Rangers This week to celebrate Easter we made rice lavender bunnies out of socks which not only look great but smell fab! We also learnt how to make omelettes, but some turned into burnt eggy pancakesL. We had a competition to see who could protect a raw egg best, we covered them in bubble wrap and some groups even gave them a parachute. Finally we participated in an Easter egg hunt with a twist…We were all blindfolded *Gobsmacked!* It was both exhilarating and adventurous! It was a lovely way to end a brilliant term with fun, food and frenzies. Thanks Leaders and Happy Easter everyone. Written by Megan, India, Laura and Sarah. 2ND Broadbridge Heath Rangers
With so many girls on the Rainbow waiting list we would like to start a new unit. We have a unit leader in place but need 3 volunteers to help her. If you would like to help can you contact us?

1st Broadbridge Heath Scout Group Beavers Beavers meet on Tuesday evenings from 5pm-6.15pm during term time. Children, both boys and girls start at the age of six and then move up to cubs as they turn eight. We have 3 adult leaders and 2 young leaders, all volunteers, who organise activities ranging from pond dipping to pizza making as well as the traditional scouting crafts. Our aim is to have fun whilst learning new skills and making new friends as although most of the children live in the village several go to schools outside the area so don’t know each other before they join us. We encourage them to help each other and work together in small teams. The children achieve badges as set out by the Scout Association in a variety of activities and challenges and we aim to spend at least one weekend away each year at a local campsite enjoying all that the outdoors brings. There is a waiting list for children to join the group – please contact our group scout leader, Paula, on 01403 791453, if you would like your child to join us. This number applies to all sections. Cubs Cubs meet on a Tuesday evening from 6.30pm and 8pm, term time only. They start at age 8 years until they progress to the Scout section. Currently we have three adult Leaders and one young leader. We enjoy hiking, visiting local places of interest, wall climbing, camping, go karting, shooting, crafts, high and low rope climbing, sports and games. This year we have an exciting outdoor programme. Our Group Camp in May, is where all three sections come together to have fun and learn new skills. In July we will be taking part in Sussex 100 – a camp to celebrate 100 years of Cub Scouting in East and West Sussex. The theme is to be The Jungle Book Animals and the activities on offer are endless! Scouts The scouts have been busy this term practicing putting up tents, in preparation for the upcoming Group Camp in May. We are a young troop, so they are all very keen to learn together all the many skills on offer. The late spring/early summer term will bring raft building and then, of course, racing them, kayaking and cooking on open fires and numerous other methods that always amaze the newer members that something edible can be cooked in hay boxes and ‘home-made ovens’. All sections of the Group will be represented at St George’s Day Parade in the Carfax on Sunday 24th May. Photos – How Scouting has changed in 50 years!

Paddy’s Page Revd. Paddy Beresford Vicar of St. John’s Church Broadbridge Heath Church Road, RH12 3LD 01403 274114 A Royal 90th Shakespeare wrote: ‘Some are born great, some achieve greatness, and some have greatness thrust upon them’. Queen Elizabeth II fulfils all those categories, born a princess and has achieved greatness through her reign after it was thrust prematurely upon her. She is now the longest serving British sovereign ever. So for most of us, she has always been there. She has commissioned twelve Prime Ministers and has been a steady influence for this country in a world of change and uncertainty. She fulfils what “The Times” newspaper suggested in 1937 - that successful monarchy relies ‘not upon intellectual brilliance or superlative talent of any kind, but upon the moral qualities of steadiness, staying power and self-sacrifice’. In a 2015 “YouGov” survey, the nation voted the Queen as the person who provided the best moral leadership. Which is interesting, as she beat the Archbishop of Canterbury and the Roman Catholic Archbishop of Westminster to the post. Even the cynical and opposers of the monarchy, have an obvious respect for her character, and staying power. That moral leadership runs deep. In most of her Christmas broadcasts to the nation she has made mention of her faith. In 2014 she said: ‘For me, the life of Jesus Christ, the Prince of Peace… is an inspiration and an anchor in my life.’ It is said that her father, King George VI, was once interrupted by his butler as he was kneeling at his bed praying; the butler quietly withdrew. Later that day the King spoke to the butler saying something like: “Next time you find me praying - join me.” In his now famous Christmas Day broadcast in 1939, the king helped build an attitude of courage and reliance on Almighty God with these words by a Missionary in India who wrote poems to support her work - Minnie Haskins: ‘And I said to the man who stood at the gate of the year: ‘Give me a light that I may tread safely into the unknown. ‘And he replied: “Go out into the darkness and put your hand into the Hand of God. That shall be to you better than light and safer than a known way.”‘ Our Queen, like her father and grandfather before her, looks to the King of Kings, Jesus Christ, for stability in life. It is prophesied of Jesus that: ‘Of the greatness of his government and peace there will be no end’ (Isaiah 9:7). And we are promised in that same book that ‘Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever’ (Hebrews 13:8).e may not be those that are born great, or achieve greatness or have it thrust upon us - but we’re human beings that need stability in a fast changing and increasingly insecure world. We can’t do better than find that stability in Jesus.

Broadbridge Heath Football Club As the season draws to a close we can look back on the most successful season the club has ever had, the first team who play in the Southern Combination Premier Division are playing at the highest level the club has ever reached, with one game remaining they have already exceeded their highest ever points total (60pts), they have won more games (18), scored more goals (72) and have a better goal difference (+16) than any previous season in the division. Highlights have to be the 1-0 win over champions Horsham in March, there's no doubt the Hornets were the best team in the division, that's why they only lost to two teams all season and good luck to them next season back in the Ryman League. The 4-2 cup win over second placed Eastbourne Town was a notable victory as was the 2-1 away league win over 3rd placed Newhaven a few weeks ago. The first team used 50 players, 19 of whom came through the Junior ranks, many of which started out playing for the club at the age of 7. The Juniors ran 11 teams this season, the youngest age group were the U7s and we ran two teams at U11 and two teams at U14. As well as the first team the Seniors also ran a Reserve team, an U18 team and two Veteran teams. With that number of teams pitch availability has been a problem but we are very pleased to hear that Warnham Parish Council have agreed to allow us free use their pitch behind the primary school next season which is real bonus. In addition work is due to start on the clubs new facilities within the next few weeks, when complete this will allow us to bring the U15s and U16s back from playing on pitches in Horsham to play their football in the village on the new pitches on the land south of the existing Leisure Centre. Staying with the Juniors, congratulations to the U15 team for winning the Sportsmanship Award' it's good to know that visiting clubs and officials have recognised the way the team behave on the field of play. Congratulation too to the U14 management team of Lee Cole and Matt Waller and the players for winning their division with two games remaining. Matt in particular started out himself as a 7 year old playing for Heath Juniors it's great that he's now putting something back into our community club. In the next edition we hope to share some more information with you on our new facilities. Broadbridge Heath Cricket Club Byfleets Lane Broadbridge Heath West Sussex RH12 3PB I had hoped to let you know that outdoor nets had started on the Top Common but I’m sorry to say that the weather continues to defeat us. However, I’m confident we are close so keep an eye on our web site for the start date for both adults and juniors. So, we are in a bit of a lull at the moment with the indoor league and club nets now complete and waiting for the outdoor nets to start. That does, however, give us time to get the club pavilion and outground ready and for the players to get any new kit through the Club e-shop. Our groundsman David Bridges reckons it’s going to be a cracking summer this year so let’s hope it’s not too far away. David has advised us that this will be his last season as Lead Groundsman so if there is anyone out there who would like to look after our square, supported by a number of ground staff, then please let our Chairman Tim Wells know on 07740101983. Don’t forget to keep in touch at the Club’s website and on Facebook. Colin Case http://broadbridgeheath.play-cricket.com/home/home.asp ——————————————————————————————————————

The Financial Fairy Godmother of Broadbridge Heath Understanding the new State Pension Over the past few years, there have been so many changes to Pensions that it’s hard to keep up with them! One big change coming into effect this tax year is to the State Pension. The aim is to introduce a fairer system that makes it easier to calculate what you are entitled to so you can plan for retirement. What are the changes? From 6th April 2016, we moved onto a new Flat Rate Pension of £155.65 per week (2016/2017). This is an increase from the maximum Basic State Pension of £119.30pw. It replaces the two-tier system whereby some people receive an additional pension related to employed earnings. What this means for you If you start to draw your state pension after 6th April 2016, the amount you receive will be based on the National Insurance (NI) contributions you made during your working life. If you have made at least 35 years of NI contributions or credits, you will get the full Flat Rate Pension, otherwise, you’ll get less. You’ll also get less if you have ever been ‘contracted out’ of the State Pension scheme. If you made under 10 years of NI contributions or credits, you will not be entitled to any State Pension at all. There is a transition period and some exceptions to the rules. In addition, if you have fewer than 35 qualifying years, you could look into buying additional years to increase your NI record. The State Pension you receive depends on when you became eligible for the payment, not when you first take receipt. Therefore, you will not be affected by the new changes if you were eligible before 6th April 2016 but deferred payment. Planning how you are going to fund retirement is essential, and it’s important to know exactly how much you will receive. To find out your State Pension entitlement, you can complete an online application form at gov.uk/ check-state-pension.
