LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Send your letters by email to bbh.mag@gmail.com Thank you for printing the article in the BBH magazine (last month—April edition) about the planning application of the Neighbourhood centre on the Wickhurst Green development.

It does seem a good idea to give the new area a 'communal centre' , the nursery will be very welcome by young families. A convenience store is not needed as Tesco is virtually next door. I am not sure that 24 flats in a small space and a convenience store will provide the 'vibrant community hub' as is described in the design plans. It should incorporate a cafe and a decent restaurant since the only other venue around that area is Newbridge Nurseries which is closed in the evenings . A lesser number of flats but an indoor community hall/meeting place would encourage social interaction. If communal areas are deserted in the evenings, it has been shown that the undesirable elements gets a foothold quite quickly. Under 4.1 Design on page 18 , a badly drawn plan ( by hand) points to the prospect of the primary school to the east and also at a doctor's surgery. Is this part of the same application? Both of those facilities were promised to all house purchasers on Wickhurst Green by DWHomes ( who are now , 4 years later , finishing on that site) their need is even greater now. In conclusion , if the whole area including the school is going to be developed soon as was promised then it has to to be good news. If only the community hub with even more flats and a nursery is being built and the rest put on hold ,then many residents of Wickhurst Green will feel cheated. I trust you will find my comments thought provoking. R Morrison 4

Proposal for “Free School” approved. New school will be called Wickhurst Green Primary School. The Department of Education has approved plans for a new primary school in the village. It will be called “Wickhurst Green Primary School” and will be based on a site at Wickhurst Green. There is not yet a target opening date for the school. The new school will be one of 131 controversial so called “Free Schools” in England, favoured by the government. Free Schools are not run by county councils. They are set up by groups of parents, teachers, charities, businesses, universities, trusts, religious or voluntary groups, but funded directly by central government. They are often run by an "education provider" - an organisation or company brought in by the group setting up the school - but these firms are not allowed to make a profit. The new Wickehurst Green Primary school will be run by GLF Schools. Their website is at http://www.glfschools.org/

But Broadbrige Heath already has a primary school. The news has been met with some dismay by parents of children who attend Shelley Primary school. Last year they were told that the school would not be re-located to much needed new buildings; despite promises that money would be allocated for this out of funds given to West Sussex County Council by the developers of Wickhurst Green as part of the original planning agreement.

Parish Point Of View

Revd. Paddy Beresford. Vicar of St John’s church, Broadbridge Heath Do you sometimes feel the world owes you something? When things go wrong in our lives we can easily respond in such a way that we give that impression, perhaps responding like Victor Meldrew in “One Foot in the Grave” saying - ‘I don’t believe it!’ Maybe we dream of what could have been and find ourselves saying too often ‘if only’. ‘If only I had this, if only I could do that, if only that hadn’t happened…’ As a child I used to close one eye and hold a sixpence (about the size of a penny) to my other eye and block out the light of the sun. Such a small coin could wipe out the light of day. Of course, the sunshine doesn’t disappear; it’s just that I couldn’t see it. Small things can darken our outlook on life like that, if we let it and although we’re surrounded by many good people, good things and good opportunities - we just don’t see it. It’s time to see the bigger picture. We often use the phrase these days ‘it’s not important in the grand scheme of things’ - that’s evidence of wanting to grasp the bigger picture. When Jesus died on the cross, He could have focused on the agony and the desperate effort to breathe. Instead He focused on the big thing He came to do - to pay the price for our sin. And He knew that this agonizing death was the end of that task and He could triumphantly proclaim, “It is finished!” The bigger picture was the thing that He focused on. The bigger picture for all of is that we have so much to be grateful for, so many things to enjoy, to see, to smell, to taste and to hear. One old prophet learnt that in his pain and suffering that the bigger picture was that ‘The Lord's love never ends; His mercies never stop. They are new every morning; great is His faithfulness.’ (Lamentations 3:22–23). Focus on all the good things God gives you every day and you will find your perspective on life changes. 7

BBH Mag Sport

News from local sports clubs.

If you would like to publish your sports news in this magazine please contact the Editor by email: bbh.mag@gmail.com FOOTBALL Broadbridge Heath Football Club The season is drawing to a close, the first team only have four games left to play, our final match on the 29th April is away to Eastbourne Town. We are currently in 7th place in the premier division and the highest ever finish prior to this season was 9th, so this could be our best ever season in the Southern Combination League. We also reached the league cup semi-final where we lost 2-1 in extra-time to potential division champions Haywards Heath. Our Reserves completed their season with a 3-0 home win over Mile Oak, that result ensured we won the division for the first time ever, we also reached the league cup semi-final but again lost to Haywards Heath. this time to their Reserves by 1-0. The Under 18s play their last match on Sunday 16 April, if they win they will finish in 4th place in the Southern Combination Youth League Central division, if they lose they will remain in 7th place, regardless of where they finish they've exceeded the clubs expectations with almost the entire side playing Under 16 football last season, so next year they should have a real chance of going for the title. Several players have also stepped up to play for the Reserves and the First team which is great experience for the players . All the junior teams have completed their season, no trophies this year, just waiting for the club to get our trophy cabinet and pavilion built to put them in. Off the field the club has been busy renewing our FA Charter Standard, not an easy task for a club that has 14 teams and 38 people involved in either managing or coaching the players so achieving FA Charter Standard is something the club is very proud of. To qualify each team must have someone trained in FA Emergency Aid and every youth team (age 18 and under) must have at least one person with an FA Level One coaching certificate. In addition all managers and coaches of the youth teams must have a valid Criminal Records Check and a valid Safeguarding Children's certificate. The FA Charter Standard is a clear demonstration to all parents, sponsors and the public, that the club: •Is well-organised, safe and offers opportunities for all. •Has FA -qualified coaches as standard. •Adheres to FA Respect Policies and Codes of Conduct •Prioritises Child Welfare. •Maintains appropriate levels of discipline. •Has access to the County FA and FA regional workforces. •Can use the coveted ‘Three Lions’ FA crest on its marketing and business materials. The next step for the club is to become an FA Charter Standard Development Club. If anyone would like to help us achieve this we will be delighted to hear from you. www.pitchero.com/clubs/ broadbridgeheathfc

CRICKET

Broadbridge Heath Cricket Club

Byfleets Lane Broadbridge Heath West Sussex RH12 3PB www. broadbridgeheath.play-cricket.com We write these articles at least three weeks before you read them and I was reminded from April’s edition of just how out of date they can quickly become. I could, of course, write in anticipation of you reading this in May but forecasting the weather (so key for our summer sports) or our start to the league cricket season is just too problematic. However, we are working hard to prepare for the season which for the adults starts on the 22nd April with a pre-season friendly at Horsham followed by the 1st XI’s first league game at East Preston on the 29th April. The first home game at the Top Common is on the 6th May with the 1st XI against Crawley Eagles. As ever, the Club’s fixtures can be found at our web site: http://broadbridgeheath.play-cricket.com/ The amazingly dry March (hose pipe bans expected this year?) means that we have had good opportunities to prepare the ground and we have even had to water the square before rolling – a very rare event in the spring. As ever, the Top Common will be in constant use throughout the summer as follows:

Sundays: Recreational friendly cricket matches Mondays: Ladies Stoolball Club playing their evening league matches against local villages – home or away Tuesdays: Early season cricket cup matches Wednesdays: Evening Junior cricket nets for U8 and U10 Thursday: Evening Adult cricket nets Fridays: Evening Stoolball practice Saturday: Junior and adult league cricket Alongside of that, you will usually find groundstaff working on the facilities most days and, of course, the tennis courts in regular use. Why not find out a lot more by coming along, especially on Wednesday, Thursday or Friday evenings.

BOWLS

Horsham District Indoor Bowls Club We would like to invite local residents to come and have go at bowling on our Bowls 4 Fun Tuesday evenings, from 19.00 to 21.30, throughout the summer, starting on May 2nd. There will be two free taster sessions with any subsequent visits costing £3 which is a concessionary rate because it's the same price that members pay. No advance booking necessary. We are located at the bottom of Tesco's car park and have our own parking area.

Monthly tea party invitation for Broadbridge Heath over 75’s. Charity says Sundays can be ‘long and difficult’ for older people who live alone. A scheme run by the charity Contact The Elderly organises monthly tea parties for groups of older people aged 75 and above who live alone and would like some company on a Sunday afternoon. Each guest is collected from their home by a volunteer driver and taken to a volunteer host’s home where they meet with a small group for tea, chat and friendship. The group is welcomed by a different host each month but the drivers remain the same so that over time, acquaintances become friends and loneliness is replaced by companionship. All drivers and hosts are police checked and it is all free of charge. The established group in Horsham says it has space for a number of new guests. Contact The Elderly’s Development Officer Julia Rivas said “these tea parties give people a chance to get together with others and make new friends over tea and cake. They are the highlight of the month for many of our older guests and for some it is the only time they get out of the house for a social occasion. We would encourage anyone interested in coming along, or those who know someone who might benefit from it, to get in touch.” Contact Julia Rivas, 01273 805451 or email julia.rivas@contact-the-elderly.org.uk Website: www.contact-the-elderly.org.uk. 11

The best bit was eating it! We also had fun building a tower out of balloons which nearly touched the ceiling. It sounded like a very loud firework display when we jumped on them at the end. Three guides made their promises in a formal candle ceremony and for mothering Sunday we created fantastic candle jars and beautiful butterfly cards.” Written by Polar Bear patrol

VILLAGE ‘GREEN FINGERS’ Our page for BBH gardening enthusiasts by our gardening Editor, Barry Hearnshaw. Plant Of The Month for May Prunus'Kiku Shidare Sakura' (Cheal's Weeping Cherry) A tree of weeping habit, as the name suggests. Therefore ideal for a small garden or space. Will make a nice specimen, growing to a height of 3 to 6 metres (10 to 12ft).

Seasonal interest at this time of year, by way of double pink flowers, produced in clusters, on deciduous branches. However, the timing of flowering may intercede with the first growth of foliage, which is coppery/bronze in appearance. This compliments the flowers. The foliage will turn to a mid-green on maturity and may offer some Autumn colour of reds and yellow. Report by Mark Pearce – Your Local Nurseryman. March Spring arrives! Spring usually arrives by mid-March and the frequent sunny days provide the opportunity for an increasing range of gardening tasks. It's time to get busy preparing seed beds, sowing seed, cutting back winter shrubs and generally tidying up around the garden. Top 10 jobs this month Protect new spring shoots from slugs Plant shallots, onion sets and early potatoes Plant summer-flowering bulbs Lift and divide overgrown clumps of perennials Top dress containers with fresh compost Mow the lawn on dry days (if needed) Cut back Cornus (dogwood) and Salix (willow) grown for colourful winter stems Hoe and mulch weeds to keep them under control early Start feeding fish and using the pond fountain; remove pond heaters Prune bush and climbing roses Francesca Riccini - Rudgwick Gardens - T. 01403 822154 14

The Financial Fairy Godmother

of Broadbridge Heath Making dreams come true

“When can I retire?” “How much will I need?” “Can I afford to help my kids onto the property ladder?” As a financial adviser, these are questions I often hear. Unless you know how much money you need to give you the lifestyle you want, how will you know when you’ve got it? Many dreams are attainable – they just need to be planned and budgeted for. I help your dreams to become reality by mapping out your future financial security. I start by exploring what will happen if you make no changes. This highlights whether there are any financial pot-holes in the road ahead. Once we know where the problems might be, we look at different solutions to see the impact that each would make, e.g. using a lump sum to reduce your mortgage versus putting it into your pension.

For some clients, this experience has revealed that they already have enough to afford the future they want, and can even spare some money now for their children. By working through this process, you will receive answers to your questions and become more confident in the decisions you make. It’s also far easier to check your progress and make sure your plans are still on track (and to make appropriate course corrections if required). I hope you can now see how financial advisers go beyond just giving financial advice – we help to enable people to have the lifestyle they want, and help make their dreams come true.
