BROADBRIDGE HEATH PARISH COUNCIL Contact: The Clerk of the Parish Council e-mail: clerk@broadbridgeheath-pc.gov.uk Telephone: 07716 130103 A NEW LOOK FOR YOUR VILLAGE CENTRE
The Village Centre building on Wickhurst Lane is to be redeveloped to serve the growing population of Broadbridge Heath. Major improvements will make the building lighter, more welcoming and modern as well as providing some additional facilities for users. Members from the Parish Council and the Village Centre Management Trustees have been working together since October 2015 to establish what upgrades can and should be provided and how they will be sustained. As a first step, meetings were held with present and some possible future users to find out what facilities and amenities the future building should offer. Then, early in 2016, questionnaires were sent to all residents of the village so that everyone had a chance to make suggestions as to what they would like to see at their Village Centre. All the information gathered has been collated and a design brief was drawn up. This was used to tender for an architect and in April of this year, Richard Atkinson, RJCA Architects was chosen to prepare a design for a new look Village Centre. Richard comes highly recommended and has been involved with many village hall and community centres including Barnham and Boxgrove. Since appointing Richard, it has been full steam ahead and the first design was presented to the working group in June 2017. Various amendments and improvements were built into the design and these were approved by the Village Centre Management Trustees and the Parish Council in September. A Quantity Surveyor has now been appointed and is working on the costs for delivering the new look Village Centre. Watch this space as it is hoped that during the coming months the plans will be on show at a public meeting together with an artist’s impression of how the new building, which will include a fabulous new purpose-built hall, will look. 6
Never let it be said that WI ladies don’t know how to enjoy themselves, especially when there’s food involved, and in the run up to the party season Broadbridge Heath WI has lots going on.
Our AGM on 14 November sets out the programme for the coming year, and there’s something for everyone: You could join us for a delicious afternoon tea by a cosy fire at Random Hall on 21 November. Or why not party with us at our Christmas Lunch on 12 December. There’s another opportunity to eat, drink and be merry in January when we’ll have our New Year lunch at the Bowls Club. These are friendly informal events so it’s a good way to meet everyone and make some new friends. But if your diary is already full for this year, here are some of the things coming up next year: Strictly fans won’t want to miss Brendan Cole’s live dance show in February (we need to book this now so don’t wait if you’d like to join us). Also in February we’re having a film afternoon with lovely old movies to the sound of us munching popcorn. There’s lots more planned for next year (fancy an afternoon with tales from a Scotland Yard Detective?) too much to list everything here so watch this space for more news of WI events. By the way, if you like quizzes, we’re always on the lookout for some new blood on our team.... Contact us You’ll be made very welcome if you pop along to one of our meetings - 2.30pm every second Tuesday at St John’s Community Hall, Church Road, Broadbridge Heath. Or you can call or email if you’d like to know more. Phone: Pauline Scott, 01403 211704 or Gill Axby, 01403 266525 Email: wi.broadbridgeheath@talktalk.net 7

Parish Point Of View Kate Bailey. Curate at St John’s Church “Remember, Remember the 5th of November, Gunpowder, Treason and Plot” . . . so begins the famous poem about Guy Fawkes and it’s why we have fireworks and celebrations at this time of year. I am looking forward to the new BBC mini series “Gunpowder” because I am hoping to find out more about the Plot and the Treason, as we celebrate the Gunpowder with Fireworks. The motive behind this scheming boiled down to a religious element of fear, mistrust and hatred, of Catholic versus Protestant. Over the years there have been great steps towards the different denominations of the Christian Church working together. Despite our differences we can all declare that Jesus is Lord, the Son of God who came into this world in order to bring us into an eternal relationship between humankind and God.
Sadly whilst there has been this improvement in ecumenical relations, there is now greater mistrust between those of other faiths – and this has replaced the old Catholic/Protestant division which saw the Guy Fawkes plot started in the beginning. Nowadays we have extremists plotting against others due to grounds of religion, terrorists who think nothing of killing and maiming others, and lone individuals whose motives we may never discover. So what can we do about it? Jesus taught some very wise words which help us here. He said “Love your neighbour as yourself” (Matthew 22:39) when talking to those who were opposed to his ministry on earth. And we would do well to follow that teaching today. Who is our neighbour? Our children are taught at school that they are global citizens – and that is a lesson for us all. The world gets ever smaller as we are able to be in contact with others at the touch of a mobile phone button. Our neighbours are those from different countries, those of a different religion, those who look or sound different from us, as well as those who live here in Broadbridge Heath alongside us.
As we prepare to watch the Firework Celebrations this year, let us remember as we see each different pattern in the sky that despite their differences, they are all fireworks! And we are all human beings, worthy of respect and love and tolerance. God Bless, Kate. 9
BBH Mag Sport
News from local sports clubs.
If you would like to publish your sports news in this magazine please contact the Editor by email: bbh.mag@gmail.com FOOTBALL Broadbridge Heath Football Club Broadbridge Heath first team have made a steady start to the season and currently sit in 13th place out of a division of 20 teams but we have struggled with player injuries and availability which must have reached an all time high in a recent match against East Preston when we had 12 first team players unavailable, hardly surprising that we lost that game 3-0. Compare that to the first season the club was formed in 1919 when the team completed the double winning both the league and cup with only 12 registered players; how things have changed. Heath though have excelled in Cup Competitions this season. Having entered five competitions the only loss so far was in the FA Cup when we travelled to Sevenoaks Town for the first game of the season and lost by 3-1. In the FA Vase we have bettered any previous years results by winning two consecutive matches, away to Southwick and home to AFC Croydon Athletic, in the next round on the 21st October we have another home match when we play Kensington Borough, the final is played at Wembley in May so keep the date free (lol). With so many players missing for the first team the knock-on effect is that the Reserve team are severely weakened but despite that they currently sit in 4th place with 5 wins from their first 8 matches. Unfortunately though Manager Graham Shergold has stepped down due to a change in his work pattern meaning he now has to work most Saturday afternoons, he will however remain at the club in his role of Assistant Manager for the Under 18s. The Under 18s have had a great start to the campaign and currently sit second in the Southern Combination League Central Division but have two games in hand on the leaders AFC Vardenians. The season for the Juniors is now underway; the club are running 11 teams this year which is a record, 10 in the Horsham Youth League and one in the Sussex Sunday Youth League, the aim of the club in future is to have two teams at each age group, one in the Horsham Youth League and one in the Sussex Sunday Youth League allowing players whatever their ability to participate but we need access to more pitches before we can achieve that.
www.pitchero.com/clubs/broadbridgeheathfc 10
That brings me along nicely to an update on the new facilities. The new pitches to the south of the Leisure Centre have now been fully drained and we're told they will be in perfect condition for the start of next season. The latest on the pavilion is that they will start construction in November (I think they meant 2017) and finish in June. That should allow the facilities to pass an FA Ground Grading inspection and be ready for the kick off of the 2018-2019 season. Broadbridge Heath Cricket Club
Byfleets Lane Broadbridge Heath West Sussex RH12 3PB www. broadbridgeheath.play-cricket.com After my recent reports of the problems facing the Club, I’m very pleased to report that we have had two contacts from readers offering assistance – both with the ground maintenance. Our Chairman, Tim Wells, has been in contact with both parties and we are developing those ideas – for which we are hugely appreciative. The work on the autumn ground renovation is now complete and it’s interesting that both us and the football club are now waiting for grass seed to grow for our new/ renovated pitches. We have put-up fencing to keep the rabbits out as they have been a major problem for us this year – despite the increasing buzzard population at the Top Common. I counted a dozen thermalling recently. I mentioned in the last edition that we made it through to the Sussex 6-a-side finals at the Hove County Ground recently. We did not win the trophy but the players and supporters had a great day at the home of professional cricket in the County. What further news of our future ? Unfortunately, although we have had the very welcome contact about the maintenance of our ground, we have not been approached by any new adult players. So, at our AGM on 24th November, those members who attend will be asked to discuss and consider options for our future. One of the options will be for us to reduce to one League team and come to an arrangement with a larger Club for one of their teams to use our ground every other Saturday. If any readers are connected to a Club that might be interested in such an arrangement then please contact our Chairman, Tim Wells. Cricket has been played in the village for over 100 years. We have strong links with the Stoolball Club and the Tennis Club are also with us at the Top Common. As a result, cricket Chairman Tim Wells and his small committee will continue to work tirelessly to do all it can to ensure that tradition is maintained. Colin Case 11

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Send your views by email to bbh.mag@gmail.com Do you have a point of view about the village you would like to share with all our readers in Broadbridge Heath? For instance, here’s a few ideas: Is 20 plenty? New speed restrictions are now in force on some roads in the village but they’re not popular with everyone. What do you think? Is 20mph too slow? Or do you feel safer now that the speed limit has been reduced from 30mph? Has the village lost it’s sense of community? Broadbridge Heath has doubled in size since the new houses were built. Do you feel part of a village community now? Or do you feel you’re “on your own”. Would you like to see more community events? The Village Gala Society are working hard to organise events because they want to encourage people to feel part of the community.

VILLAGE ‘GREEN FINGERS’ Our page for BBH gardening enthusiasts by our gardening Editor, Barry Hearnshaw. PLANT OF THE MONTH NOVEMBER Schizostylis coccinea (Kaffir Lily) A plant for the mixed herbaceous border. An evergreen, clump forming perennial, rather like a small Gladiolus, in appearance for both flowers and foliage. However, Gladiolus have more of a defined trumpet shape to their flowers.
Schizostylis have narrow sword like foliage, mid-green in colour. Flowers borne on spikes and are star shaped, usually coloured red or scarlet, first appearing around mid-October through to December. Very maintenance free, but not fully hardy, therefore needs a sheltered spot from cold winds. There are a wide range of cultivars(varieties) which can be obtained. 'Major' is a variety with deeper red flowers than coccinea. Other varieties include "Salmon Charm' and 'Sunrise', both salmon pink in colour. To increase your stock of Schizostylis, you can divide clumps accordingly, preferably in Spring. An alternative even though it is much slower in obtaining a mature plant quickly, is by propagating by seed. Mark Pearce your friendly local Nurseryman (New Place Nurseries) Jobs for the month – November….. Winter is on its way Leaves are falling rapidly, and wind and rain are on the increase. Tender plants will need protecting from frost, gales and freezing rains. Move plants into the greenhouse, or into a sheltered spot, but if you can't, it is worth wrapping plants or pots. Remember winter can be a tough time for birds in terms of water and food, so keep supplies well topped up. 14
Winter protection Top Ten Jobs For The Month Clear up fallen leaves - especially from lawns, ponds and beds Raise containers onto pot feet to prevent waterlogging Plant tulip bulbs for a spring display next year Prune roses to prevent wind-rock Plant out winter bedding Cover brassicas with netting if pigeons are a problem Insulate outdoor containers from frost - bubblewrap works well Stop winter moth damage to fruit trees using grease bands around the trunks Put out bird food to encourage winter birds into the garden Use a seasonal bonfire - where this is allowed - to dispose of excess debris unfit for composting ———————————————————————————————————
News from Shelley Primary School October 2017
Our new school year has started well here at Shelley Primary and our new head teacher, Mrs Kirsty Fitzscott, is welcomed by all the staff and governors. The children have had an exciting return to school, with events such as Bikeability for Y6 and a visit from a fire engine for Y2 proving to be a big hit. Going forwards, the autumn term continues to be busy for our children with further trips including the Science Museum for Y3/Y4 and Brooklands Transport Museum for Y5/Y6.
As our schools grows in size, we are aware that parking around the school can become a difficult issue at drop off and pick up time. A useful suggestion has been made by one parent – that we have a group of volunteers, who patrol outside the school to direct people to safe parking spaces. If any local residents would be interested in joining this group, please contact the school office to register your details. We are currently running sessions for parents of children who will be due to start school in September 2018. If your child was born between 1 September 2013 and 31 August 2014 then please contact us if you would like to look around. You will also need to complete your application for your child’s place by visiting www.westussex.gov.uk/admissions. If you would like any help with this process, we are happy to offer support. News from the GALA ASSOCIATION Join the “Santa Sleigh” procession Here comes Santa Claus. Here comes Santa Claus right down Wickhurst Lane… ...And a number of other streets around Broadbridge Heath on the late afternoon/early evening of Sunday 3rd December thanks to the BBH Gala Association. Resurrecting an old tradition of the village started in the 80’s, make sure you and your little ones are prepared for the visual spectacle that is the Santa Sleigh Procession. Envisage a Disney parade and then lower your expectations significantly and you will not be disappointed to see Father Christmas in his festive sleigh, banging out Christmas tunes as he is pulled around the roads of the village for no other reason than to bring a festive smile to people's faces. The BBH Gala Association is planning on becoming more active again with the objective of recreating the community spirit the village used to be so well known for. A significant time to do so with such growth seen in the number of residence over the past few years. The Santa Sleigh Procession has really only been organised with a view to creating a bit of Christmas cheer, but there will be a few volunteers flanking the main man with collection buckets. This money will go towards funding future events such as a Village Fete a fun run and Christmas festivities next year. The Gala Association is a not for profit organisation and any money made is always ploughed back into events to keep that community spirit alive. Santa will start his Procession in the Wickhurst Green area from 4pm and travel down a number of streets, roads and lanes before departing for Lapland around 7.30pm. Due to the size of the village now sadly he won't make it down every single Avenue so a map will be published nearer the time for you to work out your nearest view point. Please keep an eye out for posters, leaflets and the Gala Association Facebook page for all the up to date info. Hope to see you out and about on the 3rd! The BBH-HoHoHo Team

The next Gala Association meeting will be on Tuesday 9th January @ 7.30pm in the Village Centre.

The Financial Fairy Godmother of Broadbridge Heath
Time to fix your mortgage rate? There has recently been a lot of speculation about interest rates rising, so you might be wondering whether you should switch to a fixed rate mortgage. It's a good time to look at the rates currently available, consider all the “what ifs” and work out the likelihood of each scenario. For example, what if mortgage rates went up by 2%? What would the penalties be you moved again within 5 years? If you have a mortgage already, ask what rates your current lender has to offer as well as looking at alternative lenders. Also, make sure you understand the cost of changing, including penalties, if any. Mortgages are secured on a property, and your lender might not lend on the type of property you wish to purchase next. I would therefore be cautious and assume that any mortgage is not portable. The rate you pay is not the only thing you need to look at. You also need to add all the costs into the equation. For example, there may be a mortgage arrangement fee and survey fees (some are included free). When you compare your options, include all the upfront costs and work out the exact cost over the entire fixed period. You also need to be aware that lenders have to make affordability tests under new regulations. This means that borrowing may be harder these days than it was in previous years.
