Clemsfold District Day Here at Guides, we said goodbye to summer by getting together with the Brownies and Rainbows and heading up to our campsite at Nowhurst. We took part in lots of pirate-themed activities, like making a pet parrot and going on a treasure hunt. Of course we also had a bonfire with marshmallows and a sing along to finish. We got straight into the new term by getting out our glitter and the glue gun and making some Frozen themed scarecrows for the village competition. We've also made a start on our new challenges (called Go For Its), many of which involved chocolate. Did you know that the UK government earns more from the sale of a chocolate bar than the farmers who grow the cocoa beans? (See, we even learn stuff too!) We always welcome new members who are up for fun and a bit of adventure! Get in touch!

The Space Arts Trust is delighted to present

‘Two’ a play by Jim Cartwright. At St John’s Church, Broadbridge Heath from 16th to 19th November 2016. Written in 1989, ‘Two’ is a sharp, thought-provoking portrait of life in a northern English pub. An exploration of failed aspirations and unfulfilled lives, the play follows the lives of bold, believable characters as they enter and leave their local. Whilst originally written for two actors, the Space Arts’ production features a larger cast of talented, local performers.

Local performers in rehearsal for a previous production by Space Arts Trust

Debbie Harrison, the director and Dorking-based community development officer says of the play, ‘All life is present in this pub; it represents the heart of the community, where people celebrate and mourn and throughout the play we are confronted unflinchingly by its weaknesses and darkness, as well as its heart and many spirits!’’ The production promises to offer a high quality performance, moving poeticism and energetic comedy. Not to be missed!

Tickets are £10. Contact Jenny Cain on 01403 268582

Over the years, the Gala Association has been involved with organising the Scarecrow weekend, Fireworks, Barn Dances, Summer Fêtes, Fun Runs and Christmas parties for senior citizens in the village. The Gala Association is a friendly group of volunteers who meet up a few times each year at the Village Centre. We are always looking for people to join us, either as committee members, or just to lend a hand on the day. Contact Viv Edwards by email: bbh@rh12.co.uk 6

Paddy’s Page Paddy is on holiday, so this month we hear from Revd. Kate Bailey Curate at St. John’s Church. Church Road, RH12 3LD 01403 274114 Well here we are about to go into November! I’ve always liked this month – it brings back memories of piles of leaves, huge bonfires, cold nights warming my hands on mugs of tomato soup watching firework celebrations. . . I am feeling quite nostalgic now! And of course November was not just about Bonfire Night but Remembrance Sunday which follows. Listening to my parents talking about their experiences of World War 2, when Dad was an air raid warden up in London and Mum drove ambulances, always seemed exciting to me! Born a decade after the end of the war I had little comprehension of what was already part of history. But nowadays I find Remembrance Day services very moving, hearing the same names read out of those from that community who died. Realising that whole families were decimated, particularly during the First World War, brings home the scale of the loss which each village or town experienced. I often think about the words from the book of Ecclesiastes at this time of year – “There is a season for every activity under heaven: a time to be born and a time to die . . . a time for war and a time for peace” and so on. We are part of the cycle of life which we have no control over, but how we choose to live our lives here under God’s divine guidance and sovereignty, has an effect on all those around us. Living in Wickhurst Green, as I daily go about my business, I am reminded of those who died and whose names are on the War Memorial. I think it was an inspired move to name the roads after them, and as we hear those names read out from both World Wars on 13th November at St. John’s Church, let each one of us Thank God for their lives, for the ultimate sacrifice they paid, for the truth that whilst then we had war, now we have peace, and pray that we can continue to live in peace with all people for the rest of our lives. God Bless, Kate St John’s Church, Broadbridge Heath Church Road, RH12 3LD 01403 274114 info@stjohnsbbh.org.uk

News from SHELLEY PRIMARY SCHOOL Wickhurst Lane, Broadbridge Heath, RH12 3LU T: 01403 265343 E: office@shelleyprimary.school Headteacher: Mr D Bird MA NPQH www.shelleyprimary.school We have had an exciting first half of our autumn term. Y6 children have enjoyed their Bikeability training, hopefully leading them to increased confidence and safety on the roads, and more sustainable travel choices. The current funding for the Bikeability scheme is being reviewed by West Sussex and we would encourage all parents to complete a short online survey to give your views on this important provision. This can be found at www.westsussex.gov.uk/ bikeabilitysurvey. With the increased number of children at the school there have been many more car journeys at drop-off and pick-up times. The inevitable lack of parking has caused some problems. We’re very disappointed with a number of incidents of inconsiderate and dangerous parking and the response of some drivers when asked to reconsider their behaviour. We are working hard to alleviate this problem and invite any interested parties to please step forward if you feel you may be able to help. Finally, Friday 2nd December will be the Friends of Shelley Primary School Christmas Bazaar; an evening of festive fundraising to benefit the whole school. 9

What followed was best described by the weekly write-up from the league: "In the words of Mr Kennard, it was a pleasure to watch both teams play such a high quality game of darts, that was a superb advertisement for Friday night darts. That was the quote Gary gave after the Barns Green Club match against BBHVC, the match that ended in BBHVC winning 6-3 with a total of 8 (eight) maximums hit and a ton finish. The maximums were hit by Gareth Syverson x 2, John Coxon, Ron Clarke, and Doug Mason for Barns Green. With Nigel Wakefield x 2 and Chris Read for BBHVC, with Gareth Syverson taking out the 100 finish. Well played to all that were involved in that match." To put the 180's total into context a superleague match of nearly double the amount of legs will normally produce 2-3 180's. An incredible match: well done to BBHVC. 10

BBH Mag SPORT CRICKET

Broadbridge Heath Cricket Club

Even though the outdoor season has finished (although the warm/ dry September meant that we could have kept playing) much activity still continues at the cricket club. Off the field, the committee are committed to continuing the substantial improvements that it has made to the facilities in the last couple of years. Further work will be going on over the winter, including the redecoration of the inside of the clubhouse and, on the field, the cutting back of the brush and scrubland around the ground’s perimeter. Those driving passed the ground will also have noticed that we have already renovated the square. On the playing side, the indoor league is just about to start and, as I mentioned in last month’s report, overall, we continue to punch above our weight. We have done that for so long now that maybe the expression no longer applies but it still feels like it every season against bigger clubs from towns like Selsey, East Preston and West Wittering. Mind you, our village is catching up in size – I just wish that those new people arriving played sport and would join the village cricket, football and tennis clubs. Those of you interested in local sport generally may have read about the restructuring of cricket across the county. Unfortunately, an even bigger and much needed reorganisation of cricket into a proper county pyramid was rejected by many clubs and Sussex continues to drag its feet on that issue. However, at least there has been recognition at last that, in the 21st century, most players want shorter win/lose matches. BADMINTON

This year, for the very first time, the organisers introduced a new 10km race and almost 400 runners took part. Over 1200 runners registered. The 10k race was won by Neil Boniface of Horsham Joggers in 33 mins 31 seconds. The winner of the Barns Green women’s 10k race was Elspeth Turner from Horsham Blue Star Harriers who completed the course in 39 mins 34 seconds. The event is expected to raise almost £6,000 for St Catherine's Hospice. 11

The Financial Fairy Godmother of Broadbridge Heath

Changes to buy-to-let Do you know about the upcoming changes that will impact the buy-to-let market? 1. Currently, almost everyone can offset 100% of their mortgage interest payments against rental income. Being phased in from 2017, the amount of mortgage interest payments that can be offset will be capped at 20%. Example

Interest-only mortgage £100,000

Mortgage payments approx. £417pm

Interest rate 5%

Rent £600pm

NOW: Taxable rental income £600pm-£417pm = £183pm FUTURE: Taxable rental income £600pm-£83.40pm = £517pm Exceptions include when the property is owned by a limited company & holiday lets. 2. Currently, tax is payable on the net amount after mortgage interest is deducted. From 2017, tax will be payable on the total rental income and then you can reclaim the mortgage interest via your tax assessment. 3. Currently, landlords can claim wear and tear expenses even if no improvements have been made. In future, landlords will be able to claim 10% wear and tear for furnished properties. 4. From 1 April 2016, you may have to pay 3% stamp duty if you purchase a second property costing over £40,000. There are exceptions to all these rules which make them a lot more complicated. As with any financial matters, it's wise to seek Independent Financial advice.
