WORLD WAR 1 REMEMBERED. This month is the 100th anniversary of the end of World War 1. Villagers have sent us their memories of relatives and friends from Broadbridge Heath who fought in the war. David White writes:
My father Godfrey White who still lives in Sullington Mead, Broadbridge Heath, asked me to share these photos with you. The gentleman on the horse is his father Joe White who served with the Royal Horse Artillery pulling guns to the front.
The gentleman in the lorry is his uncle George White, Joe's brother, who served with the Royal Army Service Corp. Both were at the Somme and Passchendaele. George was wounded and discharged but died later from his wounds. The third photo is of his discharge. George's name is on the village war memorial. Joe my Grandfather never spoke of the horrors he saw, we can only imagine. He died in 1970 aged 77.

Elizabeth Berry has written to us about Ernest Pelling, a Broadbridge Heath boy who served in the 7th Battalion of the Royal Sussex Regiment It seems likely that Ernest was involved in the Battle of Loos which opened on 25th September. Part of the attempt by the French to break through the German defences in Artois and Champagne, the battle marked the first British use of poison gas. Through the course of the battle British losses amounted to nearly 60,000. Ernest survived but may have been injured as in the photograph he sent home to his family, he is standing next to a friend, and is using a walking stick.
In April 1916 Ernest wrote to The West Sussex County Times to appeal for mouth organs to help improve morale. Elizabeth says “I have found no further record of Ernest until his death in July 1917, reported in The West Sussex County Times in September 1917 as follows. ‘ Lance Corporal Ernest Pelling of the Royal Sussex Regiment, son of Mr and Mrs Harry Pelling of Sunnyside, has we regret to hear been killed in action on the French front, the sad event taking place on the 27th July, the eve of his 25th birthday. Ernest Pelling is named on the Broadbridge Heath war memorial and a road on the Wickhurst development has been named after him.

BBH Mag Sport
News from local sports clubs.
If you would like to publish your sports news in this magazine please contact the Editor by email: bbh.mag@gmail.com FOOTBALL Our first team made a great start to the season in the Southern Combination League Premier Division with just one defeat in eight matches but in recent weeks the wheels have fallen off a bit with three league defeats on the bounce and we currently sit in 9th place. The team won't be playing in any cup finals either having already been knocked out of all five cups that we entered. So we can now just focus on the league and hopefully start winning games and moving up the division. Our Under 23s also had a great start to the season but they too have struggled in recent weeks and are currently sitting in mid-table with 2 wins, 2 draws and 2 defeats from their 6 matches. Our Reserve team is playing in the West Sussex League this season, a different league, new team and a new manager but they have struggled with player availability and as a result their league position is not very healthy with just 1 win from 5 matches. Things are certainly changing at the Leisure Centre; I remember when the Council first decided to build a new Leisure Centre and how members of our committee joked about the new Centre being finished before our football pitches were ready. Well we're not laughing now with the old Leisure Centre closed and ready for demolition, the new Leisure Centre open for business and we're still waiting for our football pitches to be finished. The developers are still saying it will all be complete by the end of October for handover to the District Council in early November and all we can do is hope that for once they do meet a deadline. Meanwhile we now have to use the changing rooms in the new Leisure Centre to play matches on the stadium pitch, far from ideal, it doesn't meet the FA Ground Grading requirements but as a shortterm solution the league management has approved it but if the pitches are still not ready by the end of October then we don't know what will happen. Meanwhile we are still seeking volunteers, we are a very friendly and sociable bunch and the more helpers the easier it is for us all. If you can spare some time please do get in touch with me. www.BBH-FC.com First Team Fixtures: Sat 27th October Home v AFC Uckfield, K.O. 3.00 Sat 3rd November Home v Arundel, K.O. 3.00 Sat 10th November, Home v Hassocks, K.O. 3.00pm Andy Crisp 01403 252273. 07501 057654. email: crispandy@hotmail.com CRICKET Broadbridge Heath Cricket Club, Byfleets Lane, Broadbridge Heath http://broadbridgeheath.play-cricket.com/home/home.asp We have reached that time of the year where the summer cricket and stoolball have finished and the Football takes over in the village. The tennis, of course, continues so long as it’s dry and bright – and we have certainly had a lot of that particular weather this autumn. 6
To finish the playing season, the Club attended the County Awards Dinner at the Hove county ground recently where we collected the Div 7 and 11 champions trophies and captain Tom Endacott collected the Div 7 bowling award, all presented by ex-England keeper, Paul Nixon. Visitors to the Top Common will notice that our renovation of the square is complete, the protective fence is up (to keep off the rabbits) and that there has been significant work done by the Parish Council in clearing the undergrowth for better access to the tennis courts and digging out ditches to improve security against potential ground encroachment. We have also continued our own scrub clearance to the north of the ground, exposing rabbit holes that might then help the buzzards get access to their dinner. So, there will not be too much from me over the next few months, especially as our winter indoor league season in Crawley is yet to get going. This winter the Top Common will be used by the village Junior Football Club (JFC). Visitors will have noticed two pitches have been marked-out and games are already up and running – I believe at U7, U8 and U9 levels. It so good to see the many village open spaces being used each Saturday morning by the JFC and everyone is so pleased the football club is about to have the home it has waited for so long. Parish Point of View Rev. Kate Bailey, Curate, St John’s Church.
It’s November . . a time of linking – autumn merging into the start of winter. A time of bonfires and fireworks, sausage rolls and mugs of hot tomato soup. And a time for remembrance. This year we are remembering 100 years since the end of the First World War. In Broadbridge Heath we will be holding an Act of Remembrance at the War Memorial as we honour those from the village who gave their lives in both World Wars. First we will have a service in St. John’s church and then gather outside to hear the names of those who died, and lay wreaths in their honour. Those names are familiar particularly to those of us who live in the Wickhurst Green part of the village, as all our roads are named after these heroes. They have become personal to us, and I’m sure we all have our own stories to tell. For my part, my parents were both born before WW1. They were too old to fight in WW2 but they played their part – my dad as an ARP warden in London, and my mother as an ambulance driver. I remember taking Mum on holiday to France one year, and knowing that we had a day in Normandy before the ferry left, we took her to see the site of the D Day landings. I thought she would like to see the actual places where the beginning of the end occurred. But she was overcome with sadness and pain at being reminded of how many of her own circle of friends had gone off, and never returned from these very beaches. It brought it home to me that war was a very sad and a very personal event, that often no matter how long ago it occurred, memories can be very real and very painful. Many people here in Broadbridge Heath knew those whose names are included in the World War 2 part of our War Memorial – for them hearing these names read out year on year must bring back sad and painful memories. So let us continue to remember, to bring these names to the foreground and be grateful for their sacrifice, as we work to ensure peace overcomes hatred all over the world. At the going down of the sun and in the morning, we will remember them. God Bless, Revd Kate Bailey

Warren Jones writes on Facebook: “There has been plenty of discussions regarding speeding vehicles in the village, and lots of calls for action. I have set up a Community Speedwatch scheme for the village, and it now needs volunteers to run it. If you would like to get involved, please visit www.communityspeedwatch.org and register yourself as a volunteer for the Broadbridge Heath scheme. Once there are enough volunteers that have completed the online training, I will arrange for the practical training, and for suitable sites to be risk assessed”. ————————————————————————————————————

2nd Broadbridge Heath Guides We started the autumn term by building our scarecrows for the BBH scarecrow trail. The girls dyed baby grows and made papiermâché heads in a Winnie the Pooh theme. The guides held a Macmillan coffee evening and invited parents and friends whom together raised £110 for the charity. We have started the new guiding programme by building emergency stretchers and learning the different survival positions. We took 12 girls to Wembley Arena to watch the Big Gig which is a pop concert only for Guides and Rangers.
1st Broadbridge Heath Rainbows
The Rainbows have also stated the new guiding programme this term. They have chosen to learn how to apply first aid through the 1st Aid Skills Builder Badge. So far they have learnt how to wash their hands properly and what items should be in a 1st aid kit. We have been out and about completing a community survey and the girls have been practicing tying shoe laces. ————————————————————————————————————-

Once again our talented ladies stepped up to produce some brilliant entries for the South of England Show on 6 and 7 October. WI competition standards are pretty demanding so we’re always delighted when our members get rosettes, and this time we won a 1st, two 3rd prizes and a Highly Commended. Not bad for our little WI. 1st prize went to Yvonne Tingley for her Orange and Ginger cookies – which were also voted the public favourite! Some of us were forced to do a bit of sampling before the event so we can confirm it was a well deserved award. They were seriously scrumptious. Last month I promised to let you have details of our Christmas Fayre so you too can savour some of the gorgeous goodies made by our members. It will be on 13 November, the same day as our AGM, and we’ve timed it so you’ll be able to stop by if you’re doing the school run or if you’re on your way home from work.

Broadbridge Bombshells WI Last month was the much anticipated visit by Richard, our man in uniform! It was a great evening of entertainment with stories from his 14 years in the force. Richard’s ambition to become a police officer all started at a young age, when he was influenced by Princess Diana’s compassion and integrity. Richard loves his job and this was so evident in his enthusiasm. He has such a strong belief in community spirit, it was a pleasure to listen to him. Even while discussing increasing demands and continuing cuts in police resources, Richard maintained a sunny disposition. In the past, when I would hear of all the challenges facing policing today I just wasn’t aware of the extent and was shocked to hear that sometimes resources are so tight that there would be only 2 Police Officers on patrol duty for the Horsham area. As well as hearing about the excitement of London Policing, Richard also told us funny stories including one which involved him mistaking a large Santa Claus decoration for a burglar… I bet his colleagues don’t let him forget that one!! The Bombshells Photography club got some amazing photos when they went to Warnham Nature reserve. They are planning their next adventure, keep an eye on our Facebook page and website for details. One things for sure, it always seems to involve cake at some point though!
The book club have started their first book… The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry and are meeting on 5th November . And our newest member, Lady in the Van! Was our entry in the great BBH Scarecrow Weekend last month, skillfully crafted by Deb.
Christmas Wreaths are next on our agenda. St Johns Church Hall, Tuesday 30th October, 8pm Facebook: Broadbridge Bombshells WI Website: www.broadbridgebombshellswi.co.uk Email: bbhwi1951@gmail.com 13

The Financial Fairy Godmother of Broadbridge Heath
What if something happened to you? Do you have people who are financially dependent on you? Tally up your assets and liabilities and how long they are due to last. Would your liabilities be cleared if you weren't around, or you became unable to generate income? To avoid disaster, you need protection policies in place. You might think you're unlikely to die young. But Legal & General reported that in 2017 the average age of a Critical Illness claimant was 47.* What's more, you might think these policies never pay out. But the data shows that in 2016, 98% of all Life, Critical Illness and Income Protection insurance claims were paid.* The number of Life and Critical Illness insurance claims is on the rise. AIG paid a total of £69m in claims in 2016 – that’s more than 49% more than the year before.** The top five conditions where claims were paid were Cancer (63.8%), Heart attack (10.1%), Stroke (6.4%), Multiple sclerosis (5.1%) and Total permanent disability (3.6%)*** Sorry to be depressing, but discussing protection policies is an important part of your annual financial planning. For a free initial consultation about this or any other financial matter, please call 01403 288078 for the financial equivalent of an MOT. There are many different products on the market and we can guide you through the advantages and disadvantages of each.
