Catch Up With The Broadbridge Bombshells WI
FINALLY we really feel like we are back on track and raring to go! We’ve had two brilliant, well attended face to face meetings, our last being an Introduction to Tai Chi with local instructor Paul Elliot. It turned out to be the perfect antidote to the stress levels we have all experienced in the last 18 months of Covid. We all had a lot of fun learning the moves and benefitting from the calming feelings they created. We came away with an instruction sheet to practice at home so that we could prolong the chilled out vibe, and a list of local classes (please see our website for this information) We have also had another meeting of our very popular Cocktail Club, this time we met at The M Bar in Piries Place and a great night was had by all, check out the cocktail on fire! We are planning another Cocktail Club night at a different Horsham venue soon. We meet at St John’s Church Hall at 8pm on every last Tuesday of the month for our monthly meetings, but we also get together frequently for other social events, such as coffee mornings, Book Club discussions and Wine Club, we also have access to additional meetings and activities hosted by other local WI’s including our own BBH sister WI. Our next meeting, October 26th will be our Halloween pumpkin carving competition and elections. We are always pleased to welcome new members to our friendly group, so if all this sounds like your cup of tea/ glass of wine/slice of cake, then please check out our website and Facebook page or email our President Rowena for further information. email: bbhwi1951@gmail.com website: https://www.broadbridgebombshellswi.co.uk/ 5
BBH Mag Sport
News from local sports clubs.
If you would like to publish your sports news in this magazine please contact the Editor by email: bbh.mag@gmail.com FOOTBALL Broadbridge Heath FC The First team were unable to get any further than the Extra Preliminary Round of the FA Cup after losing at home to Littlehampton Town, no real shock though seeing that we've only ever won 2 matches in the FA Cup in all the years we've entered but all football fans live in hope that this year will be the year. Unfortunately, we did no better in the FA Vase losing in a penalty shootout to Croydon so no trips to Wembley this year for our loyal supporters, maybe next year? Things are looking much better in the league though, with the team currently in the top half of the Southern Combination League Premier Division but there's a long way to go and a lot of games to play so we hope to keep plugging away to see if we can better the 6th place finish, we had the last time we were able to complete a season. At the time of writing our Under 23 side are top of the North Division and unbeaten after six matches, games are played midweek with home matches played on Thursday evenings at 7.45. Entrance is free for all Under 23 games this season, so come along and watch a game because there is some really good entertaining football being played in this division, our own players are well drilled and show good quality and discipline on and off the field with several already stepping up to play in the front side. The Under 18s have made a good start to their league campaign but they did have to withdraw from the FA Youth Cup following a COVID outbreak amongst the players, which was disappointing but they bounced back with two straight wins in the league. This season we are also running an Under 17 team in the South Surrey Youth League and they had a great start with a 4-0 away win at Haslemere, their matches will be played on Saturday afternoons. The Junior Section have also started their matches, this season they are running teams at all ages for players from 6 to 16 so if you want to get involved then please get in touch. Work has started to correct the problems we've had on the outside pitches, this month the contractors have verti-drained the 2 pitches and are scheduled to spread 195 tons of topdressing, 18 bags of rye grass and 18 bags of pre-seeding fertiliser, assuming weather conditions allow, we should be able to start using the pitches in January 2022, let's hope those leather jackets don't return to scupper our plans. The Social Club has been doing quite well since COVID restrictions have been lifted, with more locals realising that we have a facility that they can use to meet up and socialise with friends and neighbours, or to hire out for events and parties. If you haven't been to visit us yet, then come along and check us out, new members are welcome and our opening times are advertised on our website, Facebook & Twitter. Next First Team Home Fixtures. Tues 5th October - Bexhill Town - Kick Off 7.45 Sat 16th October - Crawley Down Gatwick - Kick Off 3.00pm 6
CRICKET Well, my forecast last time was right and unfortunately the first team have been relegated this season. We lost the proverbial 6 pointers against Crawley and Eastergate and our batting was just not strong enough to gain enough points to stay up. As previously reported, our playing membership numbers are good but competition from stronger local clubs continues and it’s not too surprising when our best players want to better themselves and play at a higher level. Let’s hope we holdon to most of those and bounce back-up to Division 6 again quickly. Fortunately the 2nd team have maintained their Division 11 status, finishing a creditable fourth behind champions Rudgwick.
The lovely early September weather did help us organise two end-of-season matches. On the first Sunday we had an inter-club match with a fabulous curry provided by some of the players and, on the following Sunday, we were pleased to have Alan Lord’s reorganised President’s Day match. The club team won in the last over and the weather was kind enough for a well-supported BBQ and raffle. It was also good to see some old players in attendance and some returning younger players on the field. Post-season work on the ground has started. The square has already been completely renovated and we are now going to do some work to improve the outfield – the first time for many, many years. This might restrict access, especially for dog walkers. Colin Case, Broadbridge Heath Cricket Club

Letters to the editor
Email your views about life in the village to bbh.mag@gmail.com Ken Reeves wrote to us about Road Safety “The standard of driving in the village too often leaves a lot to be desired. The worst time is during "the school run". Junctions between Church lane, Church road, and Billinghurst road are seen as no need to give way. Just barge out regardless by too many drivers”. Your BBH Editor asks: Have you also noticed bad driving in the village—are we all in too much of a hurry? 8

Rev. Dr. Mark Lavender
Advance Warning!! Your children will have lots of fun if they attend this event! At St John’s we would love to invite any child of Primary age to a free concert that we are putting on at 3pm on Saturday 13th November. It will be hosted by ‘Duggie Dug Dug’ and the theme of the concert is ‘Crazy Science’. You can expect lots of fun action songs to sing and dance to, puppets and fantastic science experiments. Duggie is an international song-writer and recording artist signed to Capitol Records/ Integrity and Elevation and he has written many songs that have become children's favourites across the world. The past year and a half have been so difficult for our community and in particular our children, who have really missed out on a chunk of their childhood and not had the opportunities they would normally have had to do crazy, fun things together. This concert is our gift to the young people of Broadbridge Heath and we aim for this to be a fun event where our children can really enjoy themselves in a safe environment. We simply request that each child is brought by an adult who then stays for the duration (seats will be available for the grown-ups), and one adult can accompany up to 6 children. Tickets can be booked via Eventbrite by searching for St Johns Broadbridge Heath and Duggie Dug Dug at: www.eventbrite.co.uk/ (only children require tickets) but just to recap this is a FREE event (we just need to allocate tickets in order to anticipate numbers and fulfil safeguarding requirements). So, get your diaries out, invite your friends and put on your dancing shoes (and your safety goggles!) More details on page 3 of this issue. Mark Lavender, Vicar, St John’s Church. 11
1st Broadbridge Heath Rainbows Our new girls have settled in well, so far this term we have been safety superheroes, spotting dangers and working out how to make them safe. We are looking forward to a couple of meetings at our campsite this half term, to make dens and explore autumn colours and textures. We have said goodbye to our unit helper Yellow Bow (Lucy), as she embarks on her next chapter at university, we wish her well. As she left, she had just completed her Commonwealth Award which has been signed off by our County Commissioner. 2nd Broadbridge Heath Guides We are all very excited to be back to face to face meetings. We start the autumn term by saying bon voyage to one of our guides as she has recently moved to Australia, we hope to have a zoom meeting with her later on in the year once the family have settled in their new home. We have lots of activities that we are looking forward to including a winter camp, shooting, mystery cooking and a Halloween evening. The guides have started their Take Action Influence skills builder by trying to persuade other guides which activities we should do this term and finding out how pressure groups work. If you can spare an hour or 2 a week or are willing to help behind the scenes with admin etc. we would love to hear from you. For more information regarding volunteering please contact: Sarah Little Clemsfold District Commissioner ggclemsfold@gmail.com or visit girlguiding.org.uk For girls to join please visit girlguiding.org.uk ==============================================================

Broadbridge Heath Parish Council
Dear Residents, October, the tenth month of the year when we’ll soon see conkers on the Common and Autumn colours throughout the village. The hanging baskets will soon be taken down and stored for this year and final grass cuts and winter maintenance of areas will commence. It will be positive to see the landscape project at the Triangle area (corner of Old Guildford and Billingshurst Roads) commence this Autumn. The project, which was unfortunately delayed from last year due to Covid restrictions, is due to be completed by the end of the year. The second face-to-face Full Council meeting of this year took place on September 13th at St John’s Community Hall. Councillors were joined by County Councillor, Christian Mitchell, who provided a verbal update on West Sussex Highways proposals in relation to the HGV issues, TRO plans and illegal use of the Bus Lane by vehicles on the C622. The following was agreed by the Parish Council: • A multi-agency meeting to be scheduled and followed up with a written statement from WSCC Highways to include a formal explanation of proposals and timescales to resolve the issues identified. • A formal request to the Police for allocated support in the village to target the illegal activity. Parish Council Members were updated by Christian Mitchell that the roads on Wickhurst Green are due to be adopted by the County imminently. Regarding the open spaces on the new developments, we are pleased to confirm Horsham District Council have commenced issuing completed certificates. The Parish Council have instructed their legal representatives to progress these transfers. Full Draft Minutes from this, and other meetings can be found published on our website. The Parish Council will continue to work with Horsham District Council and West Sussex County Council and have regular exchanges with other interested parties like Countryside PLC and Bellway Homes. It is hoped that our efforts will encourage these organisations to deliver and implement appropriate resolutions, in a timely manner, for issues recognised and raised by parishioners.

Unfortunately, we have seen some anti-social behaviour at the Common with some minor graffiti on recently installed dog-bag dispensers and benches. This has been reported to the Police. A reminder to residents that the Police encourage reporting of any incidents via Sussex Police Website, 101 or Crimestoppers. They require data and the reporting of incidents to be able to respond to issues. Fortunately, a recent deep clean of the Ducky play equipment removed the graffiti. Please be reminded that dogs are not permitted into play areas. Volunteers are always welcomed to support ongoing projects within the Parish. Recently, Councillor Knight has been attending to the small sensory garden area in the Ducky Play area, and Green Gym and other volunteers attended Top Common Nature area. It was a successful morning where overgrown vegetation was removed, and path maintenance completed. For those who may wish to volunteer in the future, please do get in touch with the Clerk. The Parish Council website shares forthcoming meeting dates, agendas with supporting documents and minutes. We have a news section on the website and in addition, our Facebook page for timely village updates. This article allows the Parish Council to provide a snippet of recent activity and communication. A reminder that agendas are also displayed in the Parish Council noticeboard outside the One-Stop. The next Full Council Meeting is planned for 4th October 2021.

Lockdown reflections Has it really been 18 months since the first lockdown? I would love to believe this period of our lives is over but this doesn’t seem to be the case. Things do seem to be going back to some normality though and we are beginning to live with the pandemic. It might be tempting to simply pick up where we left off, but I am trying to make this time count and keep the positives going forward. Here are some changes I am trying to embrace: There was lots of talk about the importance of using local shops during the lockdown. We have limited local shops in BBH but access to Warnham and Southwater - I do wonder how many people have now gone back to the larger supermarkets. Certainly the lockdown has made me appreciate using local stores more and I hope I will maintain this. Life slowed down during lockdown and I found it interesting how many people did actually want to use their one exercise per day, so I wonder how many are still exercising? As I couldn’t go out and spend money on entertainment it reminded me how to entertain my family without spending money. But how about you? Why not take this time to reflect on the past 18 months and ask yourself what you want to take from it. For many it has been a time to look at their lives and think about the future. What goals and dreams did you think about during lockdown and how are you going to achieve them? We can help you plan towards these financially, so why not pick up the phone today and give us a call.
