Paddy’s Page Paddy is on holiday, so this month we hear from Revd. Kate Bailey St. John’s Church. Church Road, RH12 3LD 01403 274114 October, to me, is a month of transition – moving further away from the Summer towards the Winter - and people can sometimes feel quite depressed at the thought of short days and long, cold nights. I love the summer when people are out in the gardens, and happy to stop and chat, and of course for some the colder weather often means that they are unable to get out and so they may have less contact with others. At St. John’s during the week we have a number of events happening for all ages, and we would love to welcome you at any or all of the following! Our Harvest Weekend is 1st/2nd, with a Supper in the Hall on Saturday evening, followed by Harvest Services in the Church on Sunday. On Tuesdays the Early Bird Café is from 8.45 – 10 am where you can have a cup of coffee or tea and chat with others over some toast, or even read the papers. We host the Kinderoo Baby and Toddler group on Thursdays from 10 – 11.30 am. Two craft mornings are held on Wednesdays – this month on 5th and 12th, so if you enjoy crafts then come from 9.30 – 12 and sit and craft away as you chat with others. On Wednesday 12th October in the afternoon we have our Tea and Fellowship group for those over 60. On Wednesday 19th October there is the monthly Village Lunch – and of course details for all of these and other activities can be found on our website – www.stjohnsbbh.org.uk We really do have something for every age – and if you know someone else across our community whom you think might enjoy any of these activities, then please think about bringing them along – because they may not be able to get there under their own steam. The tag line for St. John’s Church is Loving God, Serving All – because we are here for everyone, and we hope that you will come and join us for any of the events I have mentioned. Broadbridge Heath FC The first team had a great start to their league campaign with three straight wins over Littlehampton Town, Lancing and Arundel but came down to earth with a bump at Crawley Down Gatwick losing by 4-1. With three cup games also played Heath beat Wick 3-0 in the Peter Bentley Cup but lost 2-1 to Mile Oak in the RUR Cup and lost 42 to Crowborough Athletic in the FA Vase. Meanwhile Heath Reserves have had a great start to their season, having been unbeaten in eight pre-season friendly games they have taken that form into the league and after four matches are top of their division and the only team with a 100% winning record. The Under 18s meanwhile have played two games losing 5-3 at home to Saltdean United but then beating Burgess Hill Town by 4-2 in their last game. It will be a tough season for the players, most of whom were playing Under 16 football last season in the Horsham Youth League, to jump straight into Under 18 football in the Southern Combination Youth League against some of the counties biggest towns can be quite daunting but so far the players have coped very well. Most of Heaths Junior sides have started their season now, this year we are running teams from Under 7 through to Under 15, unfortunately the Under 16 team folded, one of downsides on not having your own facilities, players lose their identity and lose interest playing in Horsham Park and the sooner that Countryside deliver the new facilities for Broadbridge Heath FC the better. On that subject the developers have still not completed levelling the land for the sports pitches south of the existing Leisure Centre and there's still a lot of work to do with drainage and grass seeding, timelines are very tight on having it finished before winter sets in, lets hope we're not going to have yet another delay. If you would like to join our friendly team of volunteers, then we would love to hear from you, whether it's juniors or seniors we have a role waiting for you. Come on down and support the team, first team home fixtures: Sat 27 Sep, Eastbourne Town, Kick Off 3pm Sat 1 Oct, Hailsham Town, Kick Off 3pm Tues 4 Oct, Mile Oak, Kick Off 7.45pm (Sussex Senior Cup) Sat 15 Oct, Shoreham, Kick Off 3pm www.pitchero.com/clubs/ broadbridgeheathfc 7
BBH Mag SPORT CRICKET
Broadbridge Heath Cricket Club Summer season ends; both league sides survived in their respective divisions and the Junior Section has turned the corner under Fred Bridges leadership. The 1st XI ended-up doing pretty well with the 1st XI finishing fourth and the 2nd XI perfectly positioned min-table, the latter a stunning performance and, overall, another example of our small village club punching above its weight. Our 1st XI captain Jordan Ruff will be pleased with the consistency although not how it was achieved with only two players scoring a half century. It was the fantastic performance by our bowlers that meant we did so well and three of them (Tom Endacott, Sam MacDonald and Fred Bridges) finished in the top six bowlers in their Division 2, a stunning achievement which no other team can match throughout the League’s 10 Divisions. Tom and Sam were also in the top 20 for the whole League – and there are over 500 players listed as having bowled in the league this season. Also, our 95 bowling points was the second highest total in the whole league – a stunning achievement. The 2nd XI had a particularly satisfying season after two back-to-back promotions and they consolidated their position in Div 5. Captain Ian Stocker performed miracles in putting a competitive team out every week. In all, over 50 adult players turned-out for the Club over the season. For the Junior Section, we have just received the fabulous news that Leo Harper has made the County Northern Knights Area Winter Training Squad for U9s after he attended a trial at the beginning of September. Finally, cricket will continue over the winter and we will again be entering a team in the indoor league. We have always been a strong team in that competition but it also gives a chance to those who have not played it before.
Horsham Arun Badminton Club welcomes new players. We play at Broadbridge Heath Leisure Centre evening club nights are Monday Wednesday and Friday from 8.00pm Friday is our beginners and improvers night so if you want to start please come along. If you have played before try Monday, or if you have played matches try Wednesday. We also have a daytime section Mondays and Fridays are our ‘Keenagers’ ; any one over fifty to one hundred and Tuesday and Thursday our ladies plus lads play both these start at 10. 00 am. The Financial Fairy Godmother of Broadbridge Heath What should I do with my pension? Since April 2015, we all have greater freedom about what to do with our pensions. For example, we no longer have to buy an annuity if we don't want to. We can take an enhanced annuity, full withdrawal, flexi-access drawdown, or even UFPLS(?)! But with so many choices, which should you choose? Your decision should be based on what you need: • Do you need your pension to provide an income you can live on? • Do you already have enough income from other sources, but need a lump sum, for example to repay debt? • Do you need an income for a short period, perhaps just until your state or company pension kicks in? • Do you not really need your pension at all, but like the idea of being able to use it to provide for dependants after your death? The right options can work very well. However, if you get it wrong, you could run out of money, or end up giving too much to the taxman. As your Financial Fairy Godmother, I can work with you to simplify the options, educate you about what is available, and make your choices easier. For a free initial consultation about this or any other financial matter, please call 01403 288078. Levels, bases of and relief from taxation may be subject to change, and their value depends on the individual circumstances of the investor.
