Butterfly Art Day
On a wet and gloomy Saturday at the end of July, Broadbridge Heath Parish Council hosted a children’s Art Workshop that was a Horsham Year of Culture event. The workshop took place in the village hall and was open to children of all ages. Creative Art Workshops organised the day and brought along all the materials. Children could make their own collaged animal to take home and could also contribute to a large butterfly sculpture. Children thoroughly enjoyed the experience of cutting and sticking with fabric, card, glitter, buttons, and feathers, not to mention using crayons and felt tip pens –– and a number of their parents had a go too! The resulting butterfly sculpture was on display in the village hall before being donated to Shelley Primary School.
Grand Opening of the re-furnished Ducky playground The Grand Opening of the newly re-furbished Ducky playground took place on Saturday 17th August. Broadbridge Heath Parish Council commissioned the project wanting to provide more up-to-date play equipment for children in the older part of the village after the new playgrounds had opened in the Wickhurst Green development. Following a duck pond theme, the play equipment company Eibe installed new swings, both single and communal, a spinner, springers and two climbing frames one aimed at infant aged children, and one higher and with more challenging aspects, for juniors. The popular zip-wire was retained and repainted.

Broadbridge Heath Highway Improvement – Progress Update Works have been focussed in 4 main areas during the past few weeks and the construction team continue to make progress in these areas: One main area of construction has been the A24 Bridge, after completing some vital repair work and waterproofing the team will be able to change the traffic management layout on Farthings Hill roundabout. This will allow works to commence on the South side of the A24 Bridge. However this will mean a pedestrian diversion will be put in place. This diversions will direct pedestrians who wish to cross from Guildford Road towards Tesco’s to use the footways on the Northern side of the roundabout as an alternative. These changes in traffic management will enable the team to break out the existing kerbs and install new kerbs and traffic signal ducts on the South side of the bridge. Previous activities have focussed on the existing splitter island on the C622 constructing traffic signal infrastructure and pedestrian crossing. Works between the C622 and the A24 off slip road on the south of the roundabout are now due to commence with the location and moving of the existing Vodafone ducts. Drainage works continue between Tesco and Farthings Hill roundabout. These works include the installation and connection of new drainage gullies allowing for preparation to begin on the new footway/cycleway construction. . Recent excavation and construction activities have focussed on building the new connector road. At Newbridge Roundabout the new kerb lines from Billingshurst Road into the new connector road have now been installed north of the tie in. Works will continue to prepare for and install kerbs to the south side of the new connector road. New electricity cables have been laid under the connector road and await final connection by UKPN. Once the new cables are energised this will enable the old electricity cables to be removed and allow the remaining section of the connector road to be constructed. The traffic management presently deployed and recently imposed speeding restrictions on Farthings Hill are designed to slow traffic flows. The aim is to enable cars exiting Tesco onto Farthings Hill a greater opportunity to filter into the traffic flow and help manage delays. Updates are also made available on the WSCC website - https://www.westsussex.gov.uk/roads -and-travel/roadworks-and-projects/roadprojects/broadbridge-heath-major-highwaysimprovements/ During the first week of September we were able to provide an opportunity for a student from the College of Richard Collyer to spend time on our Broadbridge Heath works site gaining valuable work experience in civil engineering. BROADBRIDGE HEATH W.I. Seems like a distant memory but we had to show you these lovely photos of our annual Garden Party in July. We had perfect weather as we sipped our Pimm’s before tucking in to a magnificent cream tea. By the time you read this, we’ll have had a very special birthday party because Broadbridge Heath WI is 70 this year! On display were scrapbooks going right back to1949, with examples of the crafts and activities we’ve enjoyed. They are a wonderful history of our WI and, as well as providing a record of our achievements, they show how things have changed for us and for our village. With 70 as our theme we munched our way through the cakes that were in vogue in each of the last 7 decades while testing our skills with a quiz on ‘Events over the last 70 years’. There was also a mini competition - with vintage prizes, and a local choir entertained us as we welcomed ladies from other WIs who helped us celebrate our special anniversary. In case you haven’t heard, there’s to be a Christmas Craft Fair on Saturday 16 November at the Village Centre and we’ll be there (4.00 – 7.00 pm) with some of your favourite foods. As well as all our usual cakes, crumbles and other goodies, we’ll have lots of seasonal specialities, including mini Christmas cakes and Christmas puddings. Hope to see you there. We have plenty of great things planned so if you’d like to join us, you’ll be made very welcome. Our contact details are on the back cover.

Is it Autumn already? Where have the summer months gone? However, we can’t complain, the Bombshells have had a wonderful time this summer… We’ve had the nostalgia of the village fete, we’ve been energetic with the BBH Stoolball team, we’ve been crafty with our old books and enjoyed some banter during our very popular quiz night …. What do you do with your old books? We have discovered a great use for our old reads that absolve them from the need of looking tired and gathering dust on our shelves! We have discovered the art of book folding! At our July our very own Jo, secretary to the Bombshells, hosted the meeting and guided us through the tips and tricks. Jo is self-taught in this talent and admitted that she learn all she knows of the art from the internet. It was such a success that some of us plan to meet up to have another go! It really was an enjoyable craft that wasn’t at all difficult, although obviously practice makes perfect. Her creations were amazing and we had some great results as you can see from the pictures above. In June it was a privilege to be invited to BBH Cricket Club by our speakers from the BBH Stoolball team. The facilities really were excellent, and its location right in the middle of the countryside was a beautiful spot to enjoy our picnics before the meeting really got going. There is so much history about the sport, which until recently I had not heard of. There is thought that the game originated from Sussex and was invented by milk maids. However, it is documented through the ages as a male dominated sport and one with quite a bad reputation with it being banned from being played in churchyards. The earliest record of the game being played regularly is 1450 and it was even mentioned in a Shakespeare play. In the 17th century the game became popular with women and to the present day it is fairly female dominated. It's resurgence in popularity can be attributed to a Major Grantham who saw that the game could be a distraction and rehabilitation tool for wounded soldiers of WW1, it being gentler and less strenuous than cricket or tennis for men who had lost limbs. It is now played all over England. The club house was also the location for our President Rowena, who with experience as a Senior Emergency Nurse, Clinical Trainer and Advanced Life Support Provider gave a training session on CPR and how to use an Automated External Defibrillator (AED). Skills that you hope to never need but ones you will always be glad to have. There are several AED’s located around the village; St John’s Church, the Village Centre, Tesco and Tanbridge School. We meet on the Last Tuesday of the month, 8pm. Check out our website and Facebook page for details of meetings. BBH Mag Sport
News from local sports clubs.
If you would like to publish your sports news in this magazine please contact the Editor by email: bbh.mag@gmail.com FOOTBALL Broadbridge Heath Football Club It's been all go since moving into our new facilities, the attendance for home matches has broken all post war records with approx 1.000 people coming through the gate in our opening five matches. Having won our first ever FA Cup match, live on BBC TV away to Gravesend side Punjab United we were drawn away again, this time we travelled away to Isthmian League side Hastings United and there was another bumper crowd in excess of 300 people who watched The Bears come very close to causing a shock before losing 2-1 to an 88th minute winner, so close to bringing the East Sussex side back to The Countryside Stadium for a replay. Despite doing well in the FA Cup we haven't been quite so good in other cup competitions losing, 2-0 away to Bagshot in the FA Vase and 2-days later going out the Peter Bentley League Cup 4-2 to Loxwood. League form though is going well and we currently sit in third place in the Southern Combination League Premier Division with just that opening game defeat in seven matches but there's a long way to go yet and some very good teams still to play. The Juniors kicked off their season on Saturday 7th September with three of their teams playing on the new ground. Sponsors Countryside came along on the day for some team photos and a special club photo with players and officials representing all our teams, this photo will now go in pride of place in our new facilities. We're also delighted to announce that the Encore Vocal Group will be making use of our new facilities on Tuesday mornings from 10am-12, so if you're one of those people who've always wanted to sing your heart out but never quite got round to it, then make sure you come along and join the choir for plenty of fun and laughter, all standards welcome. Our next first team matches at The Countryside Stadium are as follow: 21st Sept Home v Eastbourne United, Kick Off 3.00 19th Oct Home v Peacehaven & Telscombe, Kick Off 3.00 Entry is Free to all Broadbridge Heath Junior Managers, Coaches and Players wearing their Club Tops. Broadbridge Heath Football Club Juniors CRICKET
Broadbridge Heath Cricket Club Byfleets Lane Broadbridge Heath West Sussex RH12 3PB Well, the season is over and after the promotions of both our teams last year, they have both managed to stay in their respective new divisions. It was a tough summer for the 1st XI, especially after losing key players from their promotion winning team and their up and down season went right down to the last few games. Fortunately, their squeaky win over West Chiltington IIIs in the penultimate match saw them safe. Doni James was our only bat to make it into the Div 6 Top 15, including two 50s, but no-one got a ton and it was our bowling points that kept us up. Alex Round was our leading bowler with 18 wickets and lots of others chipped-in. For the II’s, Chairman Tim Wells finished 4th in the total runs column for Div 10 and veteran skipper Ian Stocker 2nd in the wickets total with 27.
So, it was a season of consolidation for the club and with the standard of local cricket continually improving (Roffey Premier League Champs again, Roffey II’s promoted to Div 2, Slinfold and Henfield both promoted to Div 3, Horsham Trinity promoted to Div 4) the 1st XI will need to work harder next season if it’s going to continue to compete locally. 11
After being so successful last season, the 2nd XI also found it tough in their division, mainly because they often found themselves against either new teams making their way up from the bottom of the League pyramid or III or IV XIs strengthened by players from higher teams. Given those challenges, they did remarkably well and they look forward to local derbies again next season with Warnham. Beyond the boundary, it’s continues to be the few keeping the club going for the many. Interestingly, a letter in the local paper last week said the same thing as a reason for Horsham’s cricket demise this season. I know it’s an issue that many sports clubs have in getting volunteers for administrative, ground maintenance, etc but our kind sponsors (Rock Insurance), President, Vice Presidents, Life Members and other granters can’t keep our club going for ever so we do particularly need physical help from anyone – no matter how small. Colin Case INDOOR BOWLS Horsham Indoor Bowls Club (located at one end of Tesco car park) We welcome local residents to come and have a go at indoor bowls. We offer two free taster sessions on our Bowl4Fun evenings on Wednesdays at 7pm from September 18th to December 15th. Bowls and Coaching provided. No advance booking necessary. News from your District Councillors in Broadbridge Heath It was a real pleasure to be elected as one of your District Councillors in May and the commencement of the major highways works, just a few days later, certainly meant we had to hit the ground running! I know that these works have caused significant inconvenience for some residents and we hope their completion in late Autumn will bring an end to the disruption and that the positives of our community being brought together will be seen. There will be a review of the road layout by the County Council once traffic flows have become used to the new routes. At this point we will be working hard to pressure the County Council to make changes that residents think are necessary. There is a lot to look forward to in the village though. Broadbridge Heath Football Club have taken ownership of their new football ground which secures their long term future. Many congratulations to the BBHFC team who worked so hard to get the project over the line in time for the new season. We also will be seeing the new Neighbourhood Centre opening this Autumn, providing a range of services which I’m sure residents across the village will enjoy. There are several other issues that we are working to help resolve at the moment; including the night time car racing, road surfacing and issues with management companies. We will keep you updated. In the mean time, do get in contact if we can help you with anything. Councillor Matthew Allen To contact your District Councillors for Broadbridge Heath: Matthew Allen. Parish Point of View BrianNew, Assistant Priest, St John’s Church, Broadbridge Heath, Church Road, RH12 3LD office@stjohnsbbh.org.uk www.stjohnsbbh.org.uk The one thing that never changes is that things keep changing! Do you ever wish that things could just stay the same for a while so you can catch your breath? We see constant change (some may even say “chaos”) in our world, our politics and our environment. From changes in government to climate change and from road diversions to new housing – it seems that constant change has become part of life. Obviously, for some people change is longed for – a change for the better or just a change for its own sake. At St John’s we are also experiencing much change – we have said goodbye to Kate and John Bailey as they go to their new churches in Lurgashall, Northchapel and Ebernoe; we are waiting to appoint a new vicar to lead us in the coming years; we are exploring ways to renew our aging (and decaying!) windows and adjusting to the continued growth and change in the community. Add to that, we are also becoming a new parish – leaving the Horsham team parish to better serve our growing area around Broadbridge Heath. Yet amidst all of this movement and change, we have the assurance of the constant love and presence of God which doesn’t change. It’s like having an anchor in a storm – you can get buffeted and sometimes bruised by all that’s happening, yet we know that God has everything in His hands. So we face the future with trust and confidence – we may get taken out of our comfort zones but we don’t go alone. We can be excited about what lies ahead because we know that God stands with us and will stand with you too. We only need to ask.

The Financial Fairy Godmother
of Broadbridge Heath
Cashflow Planning Well, the holiday period is largely over and it’s back to school. While thinking about what topics are seasonal, Christmas came to mind. My initial thoughts were that it’s far too early to think about that, but after a little research, I decided my views were different to others. In fact it has been reported that Selfridges opened its Christmas store in Oxford Street on Monday 29th July! *1 After one major chain went under it was remarked upon that the only time it made a profit was at Christmas and the reason for the store going under was that it didn’t manage to that year. Whether this is true or not I’m sure that the majority of us would agree we spend more at Christmas than at any other time of the year. But is the high street shop also a thing of the past? According to another source, 87% of retail goods (not including food) are now bought online, as we use laptops in the evening, smartphones and tablets during the day. *2 So what would my advice be? Well before the hype of Christmas begins, plan whom you’re going to buy for and set a budget. Make use of things like Black Friday: acquired from the States it’s the Friday that follows Thanksgiving, when many great offers can be found. Over the years as a financial adviser I have noticed that clients who budget and are aware of their spending seem to have a lot more to show for their money. So, if you do want some help with this you may find that Cashflow Planning can really help you. If you haven’t heard about Cashflow Planning please utilise our free no-obligation consultation. We can run through this with you and show you the virtues. *1Independent, 29th July 2019 *2Ecommerce News, 7th September 2018
