Parish Point of View John Bailey, Lay Reader Since the last issue of BBH Mag, our vicar Paddy Beresford has retired from full-time ministry, and he and his wife Ann are preparing to move on to pastures new. This has been a time of mixed feelings for them, with the excitement of fresh opportunities and challenges tempered by the sadness of so many goodbyes. But for a couple like them, retirement will simply be the gateway to a new and different phase in their devoted service to God and their community. As for the rest of us at St. John’s, we’re so grateful for all Paddy and Ann have done and meant to us over the last six years. And for all our sadness, there’s still plenty for us to get excited about going forward. As a first step, the Church of England encourages parishes not to rush in to finding a successor, but to spend a few months taking stock of where they are and considering the kind of leader they need for the next stage in their journey. This will be an exciting and challenging time in itself, and it should pave the way over the coming months for the appointment of a successor—someone who will no doubt bring fresh ideas and may have a very different leadership style. In the meantime, it will be very much ‘business as usual’ for our church family. Churchwardens Liz and Anne, and Revds. Brian & Kate, will be working closely together to keep everything ticking over with as little disruption as possible. Our pattern of services and events will be largely unchanged. And if some of us look a little harder-worked than usual, we hope you’ll give us a smile and offer up a prayer or two on our behalf. The Bible tells us that when Jesus’ earthly ministry came to an end, his followers at first shut themselves away and had no idea what to do. But after an intense experience of his spiritual presence, they came out of hiding and ‘turned the world upside down’ (Acts 17:6). Our ambitions are a little more modest and certainly less fraught with danger then theirs, but we trust that the same Spirit of God will guide and empower us through the months ahead. We hope that you will keep us in your thoughts and prayers, and join us for worship or just plain friendship whenever you can. Paddy & Anne Beresford

BBH Mag Sport
News from local sports clubs.
If you would like to publish your sports news in this magazine please contact the Editor by email: bbh.mag@gmail.com FOOTBALL Broadbridge Heath Football Club The new football season is now well under way our first team have started well and are currently in 8th place in the Southern Combination League Premier Division and at the time of writing we are also still in the FA Vase with our dream of a final at Wembley still intact and why not, last season we lost to Thatcham Town who went on to win the tournament so anything is possible. Our new Under 23 team, which is predominantly last season's Under 18 side, have had a great start to life in the new division with two wins from two games, the first an impressive 3-1 home win over last season's Under 21 League and Cup winners Pagham. It's also new territory for our Reserve team who this season are playing in the West Sussex League, a new manager and a new team but the start hasn't been the best with two heavy defeats and not helped when our goalkeeper broke his finger a week before the season started, so no goalkeeper and struggling with player availability, hopefully those problems are behind us now and we can look forward to some improved results. The Under 18s are in the first year with the vast majority playing in the Horsham Youth Under 16 league last season, it's a big jump from local junior football to playing against some of the best Under 18 sides in the county. The team have played two matches so far, defeat to Upper Beeding was followed 7-days later by a 5-3 victory at Rottingdean, I'm sure there will be many more ups and downs before the season ends but the players will continue to learn and improve by competing against better sides. Our Junior section continue to expand and this season we’re running 11 teams from 6 to 15 years of age and while currently not running purely girls teams we have many girls playing in all our age groups. The more teams we have, the more pitches we need and we’re very grateful to the Cricket Club for allowing our Under 7 and Under 8 teams to play on the cricket field this season keeping them within the village. Unfortunately there's still no room for the Under 11 and Under 12 teams who will be playing matches at Warnham school. As mentioned in last months magazine, our new pavilion is complete and work has now started on our new ground. This will include a pitch perimeter fence, the installation of two small stands, floodlighting, etc. It's anticipated that it will take approx 6 weeks to complete so if everything goes to schedule the new facilities should be complete by the end of October and we could be ready to start playing matches in the new ground sometime towards the end of November or early December. www.BBH-FC.com 8
We also have a new website, sponsored by Ascot Care, so for more information about Broadbridge Heath FC please visit our website at:- www.BBH-FC.com or follow us on Facebook or Twitter:- @thebearsbbhfc First Team Fixtures Saturday 29th September Home v Newhaven, Kick Off 3.00 Saturday 6th October, Away v Eastbourne Town, Kick Off 3.00 Saturday 20th October, Away v Peacehaven, Kick Off 3.00 STOOLBALL Ladies Chanctonbury League 2018: The Team finished joint 5 the same as last year but our overall performances were outstanding, our opening bats Beckie Lemmens & Ruth Arthur finished 2nd & 8th in the league, this was Beckie’s first season back after having her children and scored an amazing 626 runs with Ruth consistent as ever with the same number of runs as last year 381 , we had other great performances with the bat from Leah Head 194 & Emily Vowels 164 Our top bowlers all finished in the top 10. Again with her 1st season back after children was Emma Turner coming 2nd in the league with 26 wickets & Leah Head 10th with 12, also great batting stats from all our bowlers for best averages Emma Haley was 1st, Emma Turner was 2nd Leah Head 6th, our junior bowler Isla Head in her 1st year as part of the regular bowling set up came 7th & Amy Lidbetter our 3rd lady back after her break to have her family was 8th, this followed all the way down the stats for the Best Economy & Strike Rate, we are not a team of just 2 bowlers if potential is shown everyone gets a go.
We have a great fielding side & win a lot of our games by keeping the opposition’s run rate down, some great one handed catches held by Leanne Lamb & Isla Head, football skills came into great use from Emily Vowels & Ellie Polson saving a 4 on the boundary, Leah Head is like a Ninja where every the ball seemed to go in the outfield she was there, we also had a new wicket keeper this year due to injury she had to change her fielding position from the outfield to in, and my what a great asset she was, Ruth Arthur taking 5 catches & 7 runouts, Isla Head had 2 & 1 a piece for Amy Lidbetter & Sally Booker, the runouts are not included in the League stats but I’m sure we would be near the top! Most Catches in the League, Sally Booker came 2nd with 12 & Amy Lidbetter 3rd with 10, but all the team held the majority of their catches this year with 5 each for Ruth Arthur & Leanne Lamb, 4 a piece for Annette Jones & Leah Head, 3 a piece for Jacky Haigh-Kneeshaw & Isla Head, 2 a piece for mother and daughter duo Sue & Ellie Polson along with Emma Haley. Mid-September we held our Awards Evening at BBH Cricket Club winners as follows Batting Beckie Lemmens (626 runs) Bowling Emma Turner (26 wickets) All Rounder Leah Head (191 runs 12 wickets & 4 Catches) Fielding Amy Lidbetter (10 catches 8 wickets & 1 runout) Most Improved Player Annette Jones Player’s Player Isla Head 9
Special Recognition Certificates: Beckie Lemmens & Isla Head for the joint most nominated Player of the Match. Ruth Arthur for her all round contribution to the team. We are always looking for new players/umpires/scorers so if think this is something you would like to have a go at please contact sallybooker1@btinternet.com for more info. As mentioned in the September issue of ‘BBH Mag’ , work has already began for the Junior Academy 2019 and updates will follow early Spring to keep all the parents up dated. Here’s a photo of the Junior Academy this Summer:

Season’s End: All the very good things I reported last month have come to fruition. After all the doubts and worries during last winter, the 1st XI won Div 7 and the 2nd XI won Div 11 so both will be promoted next season when the new Sussex Cricket League starts in its complete entirety. I think I highlighted the stand-out players in last month’s report but I need to reiterate the performance of 1st XI captain Tom Endacott who not only won the Div 7 bowling award but his 48 wickets finally placed him 7th in the county-wide list of wicket takers – that’s out of 3891 different bowlers across Sussex. Quite stunning. So, the season has been wrapped-up, we have had a lovely Awards Day which followed a club T20 + curry and we just need to complete the renovation of the square before we leave the ground over the winter to the U7s and U8s of the Junior Football Club (JFC). That doesn’t mean that the Cricket Club goes into hibernation. Following a recent successful Quiz Night, the Club will be running a Race Night next month – then, before you know it, we will be into (whisper it) Christmas festivities. We will also again be participating in the Crawley Indoor Cricket League where we hope to continue to punch above our weight against our more illustrious cricket neighbours. Many thanks to those in the village who have shown an interest in supporting the Club during our difficult months and to our Chair Tim Wells, Treasurer Sally Booker and 2nd XI Captain Ian Stocker without whose efforts the Club would have had great difficulty in surviving. News from BROADBRIDGE HEATH PARISH COUNCIL

Broadridge Heath village major road improvements The west of Horsham and south of Broadbridge Heath village, has seen a large expansion of housing since 2010. Part of the planning approval of the housing included the developer providing funding for changes to the roundabout at Newbridge (A281/Billingshurst Road junction) and the A24 Farthings Hill junction. The route was formerly the A264 (now diverted onto a new east-west link west of the Horsham development area and a new A24 grade separated interchange) and part of the planning approval includes downgrading the old A264; this will be known as the C622.
Further details of the scheme can be found on West Sussex County Council's webpage at https://www.westsussex.gov.uk/roads-and-travel/roadworks-and-projects/ road-projects/broadbridge-heath-major-highways-improvements/ Who are we? Broadbridge Heath Parish Council is made up on 13 elected Councillors, who voluntarily contribute their time to attend meetings and work on projects for the benefit of the village. There are three paid part time members of staff: Jo Ball, the Clerk; Lucinda Edwards, Assistant Clerk; and Jon Pilkington, Environment Officer.
New butterfly bench, picnic table on the Ducky and hanging baskets in the village One of the many roles of the Parish Council is to be responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of the land it owns. Currently this is The Ducky recreation ground and playpark, The Village Centre recreation ground and playpark, Singleton Road playpark, Charrington Way recreation ground and playpark. The Cricket Ground and Tennis Court (which are leased to the clubs), The Top Common (Byfleets Lane) nature area and The War Memorial. In due course, the Parish Council will also be taking on several sites in the 12
new housing developments: these will be Playparks, Allotments and some of the green spaces.
Projects the Parish Council has carried out over the last 12 months include enhancement of the Top Common nature area, keeping the village tidy and the grass cut, provision of Toasties, Youth Club (in conjunction with Horsham Matters), the lamp post hanging baskets, erection of the flagpole, the new picnic bench at the Ducky and benches at the Top Common, the Silent Soldier & Lamppost Poppies throughout the village (coming soon), purchase of bunting for use in the village (as used at the Village Fete and the Shelley School Fete). If you have any ideas for ways we can enhance the village please email clerk@broadbridgeheath-pc.gov.uk Several of the items listed above came from suggestions from residents. —————————————————————————————————————-

News from Shelley Primary School. October 2018 Our new school year has started well, and we are pleased to extend a warm welcome to our 55 new Reception children, and those joining us in other year groups. Our school is very much growing – we now have 343 children on our roll. All have settled in well and we are looking forward to an exciting year with lots of activities planned, such as weekly Forest School sessions and visits from West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service and the RSPB. As our school grows in size, we are aware that parking around the school can become a difficult issue at drop off and pick up time. Please park considerately, and do remember that spaces are available at the Village Centre car park. We will be holding two open sessions for parents of children who will be due to start school in September 2019. These will take place on: Tuesday 16th October, 9.50am – 10.30am Tuesday 6th November, 2.00pm – 2.40pm Please contact the school if you would like to attend. You will also need to complete your application for your child’s place by visiting www.westussex.gov.uk/ admissions. If you would like any help with this process, we are happy to offer support. ` Telephone: 01403 265343 Email: office@shelleyprimary.school 13

Things don’t always go according to plan! Luckily, with a background in nursing management, I’m accustomed to not being thrown by the occasional spanner in the works. Alas, our guest speaker for the August meeting was unwell. Thirty-five ladies all expecting to be entertained by a man in uniform… This could have been ugly! What could we organise with only hours to spare? …Poppies! A quick rearrangement of our programme calendar, a mad dash to the shops for 35 crochet hooks, a raid on Debs wool stash and crisis was averted. Crocheted Remembrance Poppies, a tad early, but still a hilarious night. I never would have thought that a group of women crocheting (varying levels of skill) would have brought so much raucousness. I have learnt how to crochet a chain, badly. Two hours was just not enough time for me to master anything more advanced than a simple slip stitch. Some of our ladies did a sterling job though.
Some of the end results
Coming up on the 25th September our much awaited man in uniform will be along to tell us lots of tales and maybe give us some advice? October is our AGM and we will begin work on our Christmas wreaths, completing them ready for display at our following meeting in November (with a cheeky glass of mulled wine or bubbles to get us in the festive mood). December will be sequins, sparkles and fizz at our Christmas party. One thing is for sure, whatever we get up to, it’s always an evening of fun and laughter! The Financial Fairy Godmother of Broadbridge Heath
Are annuities a thing of the past? Last week, I used the word “annuity”. When I saw the look on my client’s face, I realised that it had become a dirty word! As you may know, new pension freedoms started in the 2015/16 tax year. Anyone aged 55 and over can now take the whole of their pension as a lump sum. There is no tax to pay on the first 25% and the rest will be taxed at their usual income tax rate.
One of the reasons the Government introduced this change was due to the drop in annuity income rates, but the announcement was a surprise to many. My mum tells me she can remember exactly where she was when she heard about the assassination of J F Kennedy. The impact on me and my financial adviser colleagues was similar when we first heard about pension freedom! Many of my clients think annuities are now a thing of the past – but annuities shouldn’t just be ruled out, as they could still be a valuable part of your pension planning, and they don’t have to die with you. Obviously there are advantages and disadvantages of both annuities and pension drawdown. It’s therefore more important than ever to seek advice and look at all your options. Give me a call on 01403 288078 and I’ll help you decide what's best for you. Karen MacDonald Monetary Solutions Ltd
Website: www.monetarysolutions.co.uk Pension income can also be affected by interest rates at the time you take your benefits. The tax implications of pension withdrawals will be based on your individual circumstances, tax legislation and regulation, which are subject to change in the future.
