If you follow us on facebook (facebook.com/bbhlibdems) you will notice that we are running a Resident’s Summer Survey focusing on a range of issues in Broadbridge Heath. One of these areas includes crime. 77.3% of respondents told us that you were moderately concerned or higher about crime with many of the comments focusing on vehicle thefts and drug dealing, among other things. Therefore, we addressed this directly with the police by speaking with District Commander, Chief Inspector Sarah Leadbeatter. She told us that the number one thing residents can do to make Broadbridge Heath safer is to report crime. Residents can report crime to the police via 101, online at the Sussex Police website or through Crimestoppers if they are wanting to report information to the police anonymously. If the police don’t know crime is happening, then they can’t allocate police resources to protecting Broadbridge Heath, and crime will continue to take place. The police won’t see comments on facebook and there has been cases of people assuming someone else will have reported a crime. Another way we can all help reduce crime is to report any CCTV footage from doorbell cameras as this is an excellent source of material to help identify offenders. Furthermore, car owners should make sure they lock their vehicle and not leave any valuables in sight. Historically, many thefts from cars have been from opportunists walking down a road trying the handles of car doors, looking for one left unlocked. So don’t give thieves the opportunity! Our survey is still open, so if anyone would like to take part, please visit online at bit.ly/BBH_Residents_Survey. We are also trying to visit as many residents as possible in person so please look out for us, we’d love to chat to you in person. Very best wishes, Louise and Matt Cllr Louise Potter – louise.potter@horsham.gov.uk Cllr Matthew Allen – matthew.allen@horsham.gov.uk 3

CARRY ON CROCHET - ING Villager Suzi Ludlow offers more classes. Earlier this year, BBH villager Suzi Ludlow brightened up the post-box outside the post office by covering it will a woollen crochet hat. She’s also added cheer and colour to other parts of the village. Now, following on from her success, she is offering more classes for anyone who wants to crochet. Suzi told the BBH Mag “I have set up classes at the scout hut on alternative Wednesday evenings between 6pm - 7:30pm. I have offered to teach people how to crochet but there are also options to come if you already crochet or just need to learn some more techniques. I am hoping to get enough people to do crochet so that we can all contribute to the post box topper & decorating the village. I am also open to teaching knitting as well”. The next session is September 8th & all ages/genders are welcome.

Photos are of sloths, sloths & bee wind spinner & wind spinners hanging from tree. 5

INSPIRING WOMEN It’s been so good to catch up with friends now that things are beginning to get easier.

There was our annual garden party in July and in August, some of us got together for an afternoon of ‘Games’. There were several different games to choose from so everyone had a chance to test their skills at something and it was great fun. Of course we are very careful to follow guidelines and a risk assessment is carried out before every meeting to make sure our members are meeting as safely as possible. Outdoor meetings are still a good option and our other August event was a get together with our sister WI, the Broadbridge Bombshells, to enjoy a ‘picnic’ of fish and chips. The weather has been a huge disappointment - spoiling events for everyone. But, despite a poor forecast, we were lucky to have a lovely mild evening so we could put away the umbrellas and relax as we got to know some new members. We’re really looking forward to meeting up again properly and have already planned most of our programme for next year. It includes a film afternoon, gardener’s question time, a play reading and an art master class. Watch this space for full details and if you’d like to join us, you’ll be made very welcome so do get in touch: Broadbridge Heath WI email: BBHWI@uwclub.net Phone Maureen: 01403 268963 or Wendy: 01403 217152 6

Our First Meeting Face to Face Since The Covid! (Or Hooray We Are Back!) We had our first face to face meeting in July, our last was the wonderful Gin Tasting 17 months beforehand, and despite holding Zoom meetings throughout Covid, it was great to go back to the old fashioned way. What the dreaded Covid has taught us is to be very resourceful… July was meant to be 'Colour Me Beautiful' but due to remaining restrictions it was decided to postpone until we could enjoy the complete pre-covid experience, Kathy will be re booked as soon as this is possible... So what to do instead? Well despite endless lockdowns we have managed to add 4 new Bombshells to our number and we also had two new ladies joining us to have their free first 'taster meeting' so we decided an activity to encourage everyone to get to know each other was a good option. Thanks to our lively WhatsApp group, we were able to obtain some amusing and interesting facts from our members, and devised an 'Ice Breaker Bingo' game. Despite having to wear masks (it's difficult to drink wine wearing a mask!) and maintain social distance this proved to be a very enjoyable evening and we all found out lots of new things about each other which sparked plenty of interesting conversations and hilarity. Our next meeting is Tai Chi and then Burlesque which we are very excited about! We also continue to enjoy coffee mornings, book club and very popular cocktail club evenings. If this all sounds like your cup of tea/ glass of wine/slice of cake , then please check our our website and Facebook page or email our President Rowena for further information. email: bbhwi@gmail.com website: https://www.broadbridgebombshellswi.co.uk/

BBH Mag Sport News from local sports clubs. If you would like to publish your sports news in this magazine please contact the Editor by email: bbh.mag@gmail.com STOOLBALL As the season has reached an end for 2021, looking back over the last 4 months we have managed to play a very reduced season more due to the weather than the Pandemic, the “friendly game” approach taken by The Chanctonbury League has given the opportunity for the club rebuild with new players without the full competitiveness ,several players coming from the distribution of the BBH Mag so thank you to Roger and his team! We are hoping to have an indoor league over the winter months but if this does not materialise then we will be back in April 2022 and hopefully in the summer to support the Village Fete again with our “Crockery Shy” along with the Stoolball Junior Academy over the school summer holiday. A big thanks goes again to Broadbridge Heath Cricket Club for supporting the Stoolball Team as without them we would have nowhere to play and train. If anyone is interested in playing, umpiring, or scoring next season then please contact sallybooker1@btinternet.com FOOTBALL Broadbridge Heath FC The 5th of August 2021 marked the 2nd anniversary of Broadbridge Heath Football Club picking up the keys to the Pavilions Clubhouse. Six months after moving into our new home, a global pandemic hit which challenged our wellbeing and freedom for the next 18 brutal months. As with the rest of the nation, we adjusted to the restrictions and continued to work through, as best we could, the initiatives (noted below) that would drive the club forward and make full use of the Clubhouse and facilities now available to us. With the stop start nature of the 20/21 season, Chris Simmons (1st Team Manager) worked tirelessly with his management team to ensure player physical and mental health were catered for through dietary advice, online HIT sessions, and online social meetups. When football finally resumed in earnest, we really enjoyed the Supplementary Cup despite just missing out on a semi-final slot. Chris and his team have worked extremely hard during this very short closed season and we look forward to watching the fruits of their labour as we kick off the 21/22 season. Mid-December ’20 we appointed Howard Wrate and Steve Coveney as joint managers of our U23 squad. Despite the pandemic, both have settled in well at the club and have developed a great working relationship with the Chris’ and their respective 1st and U18 management teams. Recent results suggest we’re in good shape for the season ahead. 8

Having joined the club during the 19/20 season, Chris Ellis has led our U18 squad in the Southern Combination League and supported the development of our youth footballing framework that aims to set the benchmark for future U18 squads. Chris, with coaching support from Sean Holt, will continue to manage our U18 teams for at least the next 3 years. As we closed out what was left of the 20/21 season, we made the decision to establish an U17 team for the seasons ahead playing in the South Surrey Youth Football League in 21/22 season. Teams making the transition from U16 local league football to U18 County League have, in the main, struggled to adjust during the first year and we see this initiative as a bridge for those players that need a little time to develop. Richard Burton will manage the U17 squad with support from Matt Wright, Rob Upton, and Julian Smith. To ensure all Broadbridge Heath Football Club junior and youth players are afforded the very best coaching available to achieve county level football, if not higher, we recently announced the appointment of Nik Mulcahy as Head Coach of our Youth Development Academy. Nik will be supported by Nick Grogan and Dave Letley in working with the U15, U16, U17 managers and coaches to develop our young talent. We’re all very excited with this initiative as it looks to lay the building blocks to sustain Step 5, if not a higher level of football at the Countryside Stadium for years to come. In March ’21 we welcomed Chris Cunningham Private Dining to the club as our resident Chef!!....Chris not only provides matchday food, which continues to receive rave reviews, but also operates a takeaway service from our kitchen. His culinary skills are fantastic and would urge all to give him a go..!!..Facebook and Instagram “Chris Cunningham Private Dining” Last but not least, I’d like to convey a heartfelt thank you to our volunteers for their continued support. Clubs like ours do not survive, let alone thrive, without their efforts week in, week out...If you’d like to join our merry band of volunteers then please get in touch. Finally, we look forward to hopefully an interruption free season ahead, watching some great football, meeting with friends, and enjoying our freedom again. With that said, please do be mindful of others as we navigate the next few months. As noted previously, it’s been a brutal 18 months and some will take more time to adjust than others…… Chris Higgin, Chairperson, Broadbridge Heath FC CRICKET Back in the last edition I talked about the impact of the unreliable British weather on our matches. A few weeks ago I left home with the roof down on the car only to arrive down the road in Steyning where it was hosing down so heavily that the town looked like Venice. Out of 16 fixtures this season, the 1st XI has had 5 cancelled due to the rain, an impact of almost a third. Besides of that weather impact, the 1st XI were like my runner beans, slow to get going. However, unlike my runner beans which are now the best ever, the team could not pick-up and by the time you read this it’s likely they will be relegated. This is so disappointing given that the club is growing in playing numbers (we have welcomed new players from the village) and facilities so let’s hope that growth will be the foundation for promotion next year. 9

The 2nd XI have been more stable in mid-table but like the first team, the absence of notable individual performances have prevented team progress. Within the club only three players have got 50 once (John Barnet, Dani Abraham and Alex Round) and the only bowler to take 5 wickets in a game is captain Ian Stocker who is a Sussex Senior! So, the end of local summer sport approaches. The Sussex Cricket League ends on the 4th September but at the Heath we will be playing a little later as we have rearranged our annual President’s Day match for a week later on the 12th. During September we will be carrying out significant work on the ground including the usual refurbishment of the square. This year we will also be doing the outfield which might restrict access, especially to all the dog walkers. Colin Case

Are you someone who worries? Are you perhaps concerned about the future, money or your own safety even?

Rev. Dr. Mark Lavender

Do you often find yourself thinking of the worst-case scenario and anticipating disaster around every corner?

If you do, you are not alone. Many people have expressed an increase in anxiety over the past 18 months. But, in his sermon on the mount, Jesus tells us that it is futile to worry. He said: “Which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life?” He even suggests that we shouldn’t be concerned about what we eat, drink or wear! He’s certainly not in denial of the issues of life because he goes on to say: “do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring worries of its own. Today’s trouble is enough for today.” So, he acknowledges that there are valid issues to be concerned about, but they are not to affect our well-being. So why is he so adamant that we should not at least worry about such fundamental things to living as our appearance and our calorie intake? Well, that is his point, I think. That we think that they are fundamental and yet even more fundamental is how we see our relationship with God himself. He says: “seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well”. In other words, if we are more concerned about being right with God, and learn to trust his provision, protection and guidance then we can place those burdens we have on his shoulders and learn to trust that he will take care of our physical needs. I encourage you this month to try this out. Why not tell God your worries and concerns? Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.

Rev. Dr. Mark Lavender, Vicar, St John’s Church, Broadbridge Heath. 13

1st Broadbridge Heath Rainbows At the end of the summer term 5 of our girls journeyed over the rainbow to find their pots of gold before they move up to brownies in September. We were kindly invited to the guides Harry Potter themed camp at Nowhurst, we went on a scavenger hunt through the woods, and made magic potions before enjoying free time in the afternoon to play hide and seek and construct bridges. In September we will be welcome our new Rainbows and working towards our skills for my future skills builder badge. 2nd Broadbridge Heath Brownies Summer term at Brownies has been a busy one as we spent the term at Nowhurst Campsite! We got up to all sorts including making our own fossils, making friendship bracelets and having a campfire! Some of the Brownies participated in a Harry Potter themed day camp with the Rainbows and Guides at Nowhurst which they had an absolutely fantastic time at! 2nd Broadbridge Heath Guides A few weeks ago, our Guides took part in a Harry Potter themed camp! The girls whittled wands, adventured on a quest to find the goblet of fire, and did lots of position mixing. One afternoon, the rainbows and brownies visited and joined the girls and worked together to use science experiments to be sorted into houses and created their own magical animals. India Belfield one of the guide leaders was presented with her 5-year service award by the District Commissioner Sarah Little. They cooked dinners in a range of ways including chilli in haybox ovens, calzone on a fire and sausage pasta on either fire or stove. The girls loved the camp and can’t wait to be back in September!

If you can spare an hour or 2 a week or are willing to help behind the scenes with admin etc. we would love to hear from you. For more information regarding volunteering please contact: Sarah Little Clemsfold District Commissioner ggclemsfold@gmail.com or visit girlguiding.org.uk For girls to join please visit girlguiding.org.uk 14

Broadbridge Heath Parish Council Website: www.broadbridgeheath-pc.gov.uk Email: clerk@broadbridgeheath-pc.gov.uk Facebook: Please Like our page, Broadbridge Heath Parish Council Dear Residents, as you read this, and we reach the month of September, we hope you’ve had a safe and enjoyable summer. July for the Parish Council saw face-to-face meetings re-commence since the Pandemic began last year. Whilst Zoom was embraced by all to ensure Council activities could continue, a legislation change has meant online meetings cannot currently continue. On Monday 26th July, the Parish Council re-convened at St John’s Church Hall, and the dry evening allowed us to set up outside; fortunately, the rain held off though it did get a little chilly! At this meeting, the co-option of three Councillor vacancies was on the agenda and BBH Parish Council are pleased to welcome new Parish Councillors: Sarah Chandler, Sam Hazell, and Debbie Lambert. Chairman, Terry Oliver, said: “At this meeting, I was pleased to extend a warm welcome, following the formal Co-option, to three new Councillors: Sarah Chandler, Debbie Lambert and Sam Hazell. Over the coming weeks, these new Councillors will be considering which committees they might serve on and what areas of work they might focus on. The Council now has its full quota of thirteen Councillors all working together to promote the interests and well -being of the parish of Broadbridge Heath.” Our next Full Council meeting is scheduled for Monday 6th September. A reminder that full details and the agenda can be found on our website. Recent works for the Parish Council have been the installation of a new safety throwline at the Ducky Pond, along with two new dog-bag dispensers by the dog bins at the Common. Work continues in the acquisition of the new Parish Office and Wickhurst Green parcels of land and any updates will continue to be shared. 15
