Barns Green Development Fund A report from; Barns Green Development Fund Committee and Itchingfield Parish Council It is sometime since you had an update on the village projects that have been proposed to take advantage of the Development Fund Money we received as a result of the new building projects in the village. This is certainly not because there has been nothing happening, quite the opposite in fact. It is just that all of the projects require a huge amount of preparatory work from a number of different parties and this all takes a lot of time. Anyway, we are delighted to report that the first project is now about to get under way. This is the new Village Car Park which will be situated next to the Village Hall. Construction on a new 38 space car park will commence shortly. It will be situated in the Jubilee Field running parallel with Muntham Drive and will help the growing demand for parking spaces when there are large numbers of people attending events at the social club, playing sports or going to functions and shows at the village hall. All the planning permissions have now been received, the land transfer is complete, all the plans and drawings have been developed and the contractors are now appointed. There have also been lengthy discussions with Horsham District Council about S106 money for this project. This has all involved a great deal of work by the Parish Council, The Village Trust, the Development Fund Committee and various other groups. Over half the funding for this project will be met by S106 money which means that we will only need to draw on about ÂŁ45,000 of the Development Fund money for the car park. Plans for improvements for the changing facilities at the Social Club are well underway. Designs have been drawn up and applications for grants have been submitted. Again this will be a long process as so many different parties have to be involved but things are moving and hopefully there will be further progress in the coming months which will move this exciting project forward. Plans have also been developed for an extension to the Village Hall. Planning permissions have been received and progress on this project is also encouraging. Additional grants and subsidies will be required and work is progressing on this. There are a couple of other projects which we are hoping to have more news on in the coming months. In the meantime, we are looking forward to seeing the first project get under way and hopefully it will see the start of some very exciting and much needed improvements to some of the key amenities in the village.

VILLAGE CLEAN UP DAY Sat 16th April 2016 9.15am Clean for the Queen (and Barns Green!) As part of the Queen’s 90th birthday celebrations, a national campaign was launched recently to help clean up the country called “Clean for the Queen”. Although the official date for the campaign was early March, the Parish Council thought it was a good initiative and one that we should try and support. We do of course have our own clean up day for the village (usually in the Autumn) but we have decided to organise another one on Saturday 16th April to help make the village look even nicer as we move into Spring. We live in a lovely part of the countryside and we can make that countryside even more lovely by just a little effort to tidy things up. We need the help of as many volunteers as possible to; Pick up litter and general waste To clear overgrown hedges and branches away from any road signs To wash dirty road signs The aim is for everyone who wants to help to meet at the Village Hall at 9.15am on Saturday 16th April. If you want to identify a particular road or stretch of road that you want to work in, please just let us know. All volunteers will be issued with hi-viz jackets and picker sticks and rubbish bags will be provided. Once rubbish bags are full, these can be left at the side of the road as there will be a vehicle and trailer going around the village to collect these. All you need to do is to come along wearing some appropriate clothing and gloves and a bucket and sponge if you want to clean signs and help do your bit for the village – the more people we have to help on the day, the more we can do and the less time it will take. Please come along and help keep your Parish clean For further information, contact; Itichingfield Parish Council Clerk, Jan Critchley; jancritchley@itchpc.freeserve.co.uk

St Nicolas Church - Thoughts from your Vicar. Jesus rose from the dead? Prove it! "Raised from the dead? Sure. Right. And I have a three legged duck!" In as many words, that's how Thomas responded: "Unless I see the nail marks in his hands, and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe it." He'd seen dead people before. And Jesus was dead. He sounds like sophisticated rationalists of the Twenty-first Century. "It isn't plausible," they would contend. "It didn't happen." But what if it did happen?
Rev. Sandra Hall Thomas was convinced when Jesus appeared to him, reached out his hands to Thomas, and said, "Put your finger here." Thomas dropped to his knees and said: "My Lord and my God!" Let's look at some of the evidence. Jesus' body was missing. If the Jews could have found it, they could have stilled the preaching of Jesus' resurrection that filled Jerusalem. But they could not. The body wasn't stolen. The Romans had no motive. The Jews had no motive. Ah-ha, you say, the disciples stole it. There is the matter of the Roman guards, and the disciples' initial disbelief when the women brought them the news early that Easter morning. If the disciples had stolen the body, you wouldn't expect them to risk their lives. People don't die for what they know is not true. But the disciples put their lives on the line, and nearly all were eventually martyred for their faith. They certainly believed it. The church grew in Jerusalem, the very place he was crucified. Followers of Jesus in the city of Jerusalem grew from a few dozen to thousands upon thousands soon after Jesus' resurrection. They believed it was true. Contemporary documents refer to the event. Thallus the Samaritan, Suetonius, Tacitus, Pliny contain references to Jesus. Jewish historian Josephus writes about Jesus' crucifixion and resurrection. They knew something had happened. Jesus' resurrection from the dead is actually more plausible than any other explanation. That's why we Christians make such a big deal about Easter. That's why we celebrate. Jesus' resurrection means that death is not the end. That though my body may lie mouldering in the ground, Jesus, whom the Father raised from the dead, gives me eternal life. And since Jesus is not dead, people can encounter him today. We can know him through a personal relationship. He changes people for good. Do come to church and find out more, you would be most welcome. With love in Christ, Revd Sandra Hall Telephone: 01403 790197 or email: sandra.richard@tiscali.co.uk 7

BARNS GREEN DARTS TEAMS VYING FOR END SILVER WARE. The Monday night darts team recently completed a 6 - 2 home win over The White Horse. This was followed by the first league defeat of the season when going down 3 - 5 against The Shelley. Well done to The Shelley! One of the pivotal games saw Fran Pickett hit 180 and narrowly miss 149 and 127 check outs in going down 2-1 in an excellent singles match. The following week saw the Flying Pairs Competition in which Stephen Courquin just failed to make the final for the third year running. The Monday night team are still top of Division two. Barns Green Club hosted the Jack Tofts Cup Final between Southwater and The Kings Arms Billingshurst on 7th March. On the same night the Barns Green team will be competed in the Mickey Edwards Plate Final at the Rising Sun against The Coot. The Friday night side had a 8 -1 away win against The Cat And Canary featuring a 105 outshot by skipper Andy Mason. The following week saw a visit from league leaders and last year's champions Broadbridge Heath. Despite being 3-1 up, the Green finally succumbed to a 6-3 defeat. In a return to form The Green then produced a 5-3 away win at third placed team The Railway, so keeping second place in Division One. The Railway included Sussex Ladies A Team player Crystal Woodrow fresh from beating BDO world ranking number 6 Zoe Jones (ÂŁ10,000 career prize money) 3-1 in the latest County A team. Disaster struck the following week in the repeat fixture, a tough quarter final Victory Cup match in which the Railway played well to knock out the holders Barns Green 7 -2 .
FISHING AT SUMNERS POND Barns Green has its own fishing lakes open daily to tickets from 7am each morning until dusk or 9pm. Campers and members may begin fishing at 6am during the summer months when the mornings are lighter. Day tickets can be obtained from the reception or the bailiff who will make several visits during the day. Fishermen/ women must observe fishery rules, viewed on the large notice board located outside reception. There are four course fishing waters open at Sumners Ponds. Sumners Lake, the larger specimen water, is stocked with Carp up to and around 36lb, Perch to 4lb, Chub to 6lb, Bream to 7lb, Roach to 2lb and Pike to 15lb. Half of this lake is generally reserved for campers but vacant swims can be fished if there isn't an arrival on that day. Night fishing for members and campers is also possible on this lake.
8
In the Farm Pond, the smaller but more mature of the lakes, we have Carp to 24lb, Roach, Tench, Rudd, Chub, Perch and Crucians. Night fishing is possible on this lake when a premium camping pitch is booked. Set on its own, away from the campsite lies the 3.5 acre Match Lake which provides prolific fishing with Barbel, Chub, Carp, Crucians, Tench and Roach. Primarily designed for the match fisherman but provides great sport for the day ticket fisherman too. The Ribbon Lake, as its name implies, is a meandering ribbon of water. It is well stocked with fish such as Barbel, Tench, Chub, Bream, Roach and Crucians. It is popular with match fisherman and is also ideal for beginners or parent and child teams as you can generally be guaranteed a successful catch on most visits. Our newest addition is Betty's Lake. This lake will be another specimen water similar to the Sumners Lake and is planned to open late Summer 2016.
BARNS GREEN RUGBY CLUB GO MARCHING ON. Three victories, one walk over and some compelling statistics have punctuated the past month for BGRFC. Points for 110, points against under 20-another six weeks of challenges in front of us BUT the crucial top of the table place now remains in the hands of our rugby team. Beating the previously unbeaten League Leaders, Brighton Thirds, by 15-0 in front of a large home crowd remains the pick of the games-a match played in a howling wind and very wet underfoot saw the Green play at their most composed and determined for a very long time. The forthcoming games against St Francis who lie third and have a cup victory this season over us, will be crucial-postponements have engineered that these games will be played back to back on April 9th away and April 16th at home. It is never over until it is over-but the opportunity of topping the Sussex League Two West table is one that genuinely and deservedly exists at this moment!
BARNS GREEN CLUB MEMBERS REFORM POOL TEAM AFTER A 15 YEAR BREAK. An enthusiastic group of members have formed a pool team which will play in the Horsham & District Summer Pool League (Sponsored by Tarratt Tables). The team consists of five players, Captain Dave Butler, Vice-Captain Elliott Turner, Richard Gross, Ali Scriven and Alex Hyland. However, this is the minimum number required to form a team, so additional players are needed to make up a viable squad. Those players interested playing league pool should contact Dave Butler on Wednesday Practice nights after 7.30pm or add your name and telephone number to the Pool Players sheet notice on the Barns Green Club notice board. The Barns Green A pool team expect to start playing Pool League matches from May. So, if you are interested contact Dave Butler.

Barns Green Half Marathon Event Sunday 25th September 2016 Half Marathon Race start; 10am. 10km Race start; 10.20am This year’s Barns Green Half Marathon event is being extended to include a separate 10km race. This follows on from extensive research that we have done which showed that many runners feel that the demands of a 13 mile half marathon are just too much but they would like to take part in an organised race which is a slightly shorter distance. Adding the new 10 km race has not been easy. The planning of the route and general timings and logistics of race day have had to be analysed and examined in great detail to determine just how we can make it work. Well we think we have found the solutions but the extra demands of the new race mean that we are short of race marshals for the day. We currently have an excellent group of experienced marshals who help to keep all the runners safe and on the right course but we need more marshals for this year’s event. If you are interested in giving up some of your time to help as a race marshal or a car park marshal on race day please do get in touch with Vernon Jennings, Race Director; vernonljenningsandco@f2s.com Of course the new race brings with it some added costs and generally all our other costs keep rising! As a result, we desperately need new sponsors to help us to keep the race going. We currently have great support from some local companies but if you have a business or connections to a business in the local area please do consider supporting this great local event and contact Nigel Currie; nigel.vindaloo@outlook.com Remember whatever surplus money is raised from the event goes to our chosen charity which this year is St. Catherine’s Hospice and also goes back to our community in the form of donations to all the organisations, sports clubs and societies who help us to stage the event.

Our thanks to the Barns Green Half Marathon Committee and the Calender Committee for their donation to the club. Barns Green Players Comedy Play – Blithe Spirit The Barns Green Players are now busy rehearsing for our May Comedy Play. This year there will be three performances of Noel Coward’s brilliant comedy play Blithe Spirit. The performances will be on Friday the 6th May at 8pm and Saturday 7th May at 2pm and 8pm in the Barns Green Village Hall. The play is one of Noel Coward’s finest works and in it, the socialite and novelist Charles Condomine, invites the eccentric medium and clairvoyant Madame Arcati, to his house to conduct a séance, hoping to gather material for his next book. The scheme backfires when he is haunted by the ghost of his annoying and temperamental first wife, Elvira, after the séance. Elvira makes continual attempts to disrupt Charles's marriage to his second wife, Ruth, who cannot see or hear the ghost, with hilarious consequences. Lynda Filby who is Directing the play, commented, “The play has been described as one of Noel Coward’s masterpieces. It has some great comic elements and with the excellent cast that we have I am looking forward to putting on a really great show”. This is one of Barns Green Players’ very popular comedy shows where the audience sits at tables of eight. For the evening performances drinks are served at the tables from our licensed bar. However this year, there is also an afternoon performance on the Saturday. For this performance there won’t be a bar but afternoon tea will be served. Make sure you get your tickets and tables organised early for one of the performances and enjoy a really entertaining show. Tickets are available from the box office – 01403 731566 or through the website – www.barnsgreenplayers.co.uk .Tickets are just £11.00 each or £88 for a full table of Eight. Doors Open at 7.00pm for the evening performances; 1.15pm for the afternoon performance.

Munitions Work In 1916, the women of Barns Green were able to register their willingness to work for the war effort by visiting the local labour exchange in Horsham. Local farmers were still resistant to employing women for “men’s work” and local women knew that farm work was hard, dirty and very difficult to do when wrestling with full length dresses! For the first time ever the young single women of the village had a choice of where to work. For decades the only work option for these women was domestic service – now they could work in engineering industries which had previously been a wholly male preserve, utterly closed to women, but now suddenly available to anyone. It is a measure of how much the rural community was affected by the war that young women from Sussex villages could be sent to work in the burgeoning munitions and aircraft works in Croydon. They did not commute to their new jobs, but were billeted with local families in Croydon or lived in hostels created for the purpose. They were paid far more than they would have received as a domestic servant, although the work was hard, potentially life threatening and the hours long. But unlike their mothers and grandmothers these women had a glimpse of a life beyond domestic service and marriage – they had independence. Florence and Gladys Sprackling left Barns Green to work in munitions in Croydon. Among their new workmates were Ruby and Lizzie Gorsuch from Brighton and the four young women became firm friends. In the same way as men going off to war recorded the event with a photograph in their new uniforms, so too did these women. Although not a uniform, munitions workers had to wear an overall dress which came to about mid calf, not full length, but still not as practical as trousers. They also wore a soft cap to keep their hair up and every woman was given an individually numbered “war work” badge (the triangular badge just visible in the photograph). The friendship formed between the Sprackling and Gorsuch families continued after the war, and in 1921 Ruby Gorsuch married Leslie Sprackling, Gladys and Florence’s brother.

BARNS GREEN & ITCHINGFIELD W.I. In February our speaker was Rev. Sandra Hall who told us of how she came to be Priest in Charge at Itchingfield and Slinfold. She told us of her ‘faith journey’ starting with her childhood when she went to Sunday school and attended a Church of England primary school. Although she had a good grounding in the Christian faith as she grew up she drifted away from the church (but she still said her prayers) and developed her love for horses. After a family tragedy in 1999 she felt herself drawing nearer to God and returned to the church. She wanted to fill the empty space she felt and had so many unanswered questions. She thus joined a house group, then an Alpha course to search for answers. In 2000 she was confirmed and then became a lay communion assistant. Over the next few years she studied more taking a higher education diploma, learning new computer skills and writing assignments. After much prayer and bible study she realised she was being called to be a priest but balked at the idea and tried to forget about it. During a prayer vigil she realised there was nothing to stop her being a priest and that God would help her to do it. She went to Westcott House training college in Cambridge where she studied for a BA over two years. She was ordained in Chichester Cathedral and served as a deacon in Cuckfield and then became a priest there a year later. She says she had the best year of her life at this time when she celebrated 25 years of marriage but soon after this her husband became ill and died. Sandra said that God then supported her through the worst year of her life and continues to do so. She feels her role is to care for and love God’s people and to serve others without expecting thanks. She has had to learn from becoming a private Christian to a public one. The meeting concluded with tea. Miriam Coghill
