Clean for the Queen Village Clear up Day There was a great turn out for the latest Village Clear up day organised by Itchingfield Parish Council and inspired by the recent Clean for the Queen campaign which was set up as part of the celebrations for the Queens 90th birthday. Twenty Five volunteers turned out on the morning of Saturday 16th April to help clean up the Parish. Armed with bags, gloves and high-viz jackets, the volunteers filled over 50 black bin bags (3 trailer loads) of rubbish. These were taken back to the Village Hall for the Council to take to the tip. It is such a shame that there are so many senseless people around who think it is funny to throw cans, bottles, take away wrappers and all manner of other items of rubbish out of their car windows. However it is rewarding to see so many people who want to clear up the mess and help to keep Barns Green looking beautiful. It makes such a difference when so many people get involved so a huge thanks to all who helped. There were a few areas where we were short of volunteers and it wasn’t possible to clean all of Bashurst Hill, so we still need more helpers. There is likely to be another clear up day in the Autumn so please look out for details about this. 3

St Nicolas Church - Thoughts from your Vicar.
On Sunday 8th May at 6.00 pm there will be a joint benefice Healing Service at St Nicolas Church, Itchingfield. Jesus was a healer who calls his church to continue his ministry in the world today. He instructed his disciples to: ‘Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, and cast out demons.’ A common New Testament term for sickness is 'weakness'. As we face weakness, we can receive God's grace, expressed sometimes in an experience of healing and sometimes through the strength that comes in the bearing of weakness. Rev. Sandra Hall Jesus proclaimed the coming of the kingdom through his sayings and parables and through prayer and healing. So today, the church proclaims God’s kingdom through its teaching and preaching ministry and through its life of prayer and healing. It is apparent in Scripture that the physical, emotional, social and spiritual well-being of human beings are closely interconnected. Healing can be so much more than physical healing. Good health means being well in mind, body and soul; if we are sick or lacking in any one of these areas we are not 100% well and therefore in need of healing. It sometimes includes the healing of memories or restoring broken relationships with family or friends. The healing ministry is for anyone in need of any kind of healing, within the Church this includes prayer, laying on of hands and anointing with oil. People may receive prayer and the laying on of hands on behalf of others who are not present as well as for themselves. The oil to be used for anointing at this service is pure olive oil that has been consecrated and blessed by the bishop in Holy Week at Chichester cathedral. Healing, reconciliation and restoration are integral to the good news of Jesus Christ. For this reason prayer for individuals, focused through the laying on of hands or anointing with oil, has a proper place within the public prayer of the Church. God's gracious activity of healing is to be seen both as part of the proclaiming of the good news and as an outworking of the presence of the Holy Spirit in the life of the Church. And prayer for healing and strengthening does not reject of the skills and activity of medicine and medical practitioners, which are also part of God's faithfulness to creation. Do join us at this service and receive God’s healing touch for yourself or a loved one, you will be most welcome. With love in Christ, Revd Sandra Hall Telephone: 01403 790197 or email: sandra.richard@tiscali.co.uk

LOCAL SPORTS NEWS Contact our Sports Editor, Barry Hearnshaw by email: sports@barnsgreen.com The Green Win Silverware!
DARTS
In March the Monday night darts team won the Mickey Edwards Plate competition by defeating Division A side The Coot 6 -1. Skipper John Coxon set the tone for the night with a 110 check out in the first leg of the match, and a great team performance overcame last year's high flyers. After the excitement of the cup win, the league beckoned as we travelled to The Malt Shovel. Another strong performance produced a 7-1 win as Kevin Bance secured a 180 shot. The Green's Fran Pickett condemning Paul Gettins to his first league defeat of the season. The Monday night team are still top of Division Two. The following Monday saw the annual singles tournament when The Green's Jason Courquin made the Division Two semi finals. The Friday night team bounced back from their 7 -2 defeat in the cup last month with a 7 - 2 victory over Roffey. The Green welcomed back Sussex 'B' player Gareth Syverson who responded with a 15 dart leg including a 161 check out, the highest check out in the league this year to date. The following week Barns Green travelled to The Coot and secured a 5-4 win after being 3 - 1 down. The Star were the next visitors to The Green and the home side were able to come through victors 6-3 including a 124 check out by John Coxon. The Friday night team are still hanging on to second place in the league. Barns Green Short Mat Bowls Club
SHORT MAT BOWLS
For the last 35 years Barns Green has had a thriving Short Mat Bowls Club. The Club started off with 30 or so members but this has reduced over the years until the membership is now only 10, some of whom have been playing since the Club was formed. Tuesday afternoon in the Village Hall is club afternoon between 2-4 pm which limits membership to those who are retired. The majority of members are quite elderly and who find it very difficult to handle the heavy equipment needed to set up and put away the mats in the Village Hall. When the Club was originally formed a Friday an evening session was well supported by those who were still working, but gradually they retired and migrated to the Tuesday afternoon sessions. At that time, the club were playing in the West Sussex County League. For those who have never played Short Mat Bowls, it is not carpet bowls as some people think, but is played with the same bowls as for outside greens, and the rules are similar. It is great fun, suitable for all ages, very competitive and energetic, and it is also a game that people with disabilities can play. 9
The club has had many years of fun and friendship and are very anxious that the Club should not close. If you would like to come and give it a try, please contact Eve Barrett on email evebarrett@talktalk.net. If new members can’t make it to an afternoon session, the club would be very happy to organise evening sessions. Please come along and give it a try, you will be made very welcome the Club has all the equipment you need to get started. End of season on a knifes edge
RUGBY
Back playing after what seems a season of rain and BGRFC continue to win. Recently and most importantly a 0-15 away win at St Francis in Crawley, with St Francis being the one side that could unseat our desire for a top two finish as they lie a close third at present. The following week saw BGRFC beat St Francis at home 41-0 to move into an unassailable promotion position. One more game to go in April, season over, win against Worthing and the BGRFC win the league and get promoted. Excellent to get here with the title in our hands-but nothing is certain by any means! Sussex 'Orangeboom' League Two West SNOOKER CLUB NOT ON CUE THIS SEASON
SNOOKER
Barns Green Snooker Clubs fortunes have been few this season. The A team were lying 3rd in Sept. but have slipped to 9th in a division of 11 teams having completed all fixtures. This is as a result of winning 1 out of 6 in the last two months. Two players have finished with creditable above average performances, Trevor Courquin 60% & Mick Brown 50%. While Stephen Frost finished with 50% success rate and Jason Courquin 30%. Team Statistics Played 95 frames Won 38 Lost 57 10
The B Team have had a very unfortunate season finishing 11th, having been 7th in Sept. The team have played 12 matches out of 20 were the score finished 3-2. Only in two cases did the team win, losing on ten occasions, if team had been able to turn the losses into a victory, they would have finished in the top four. Ben Hill romped away with team honours winning 50% of his matches followed by Andy High on 40% and Brian Muncer on 36%. Team Statistics Played 94 frames Won 27 Lost 67 The C Team similarly not had the best of times finishing 9th of 10 having lying 1st after match one in September. Two players finished with good performances Matt Spencer and Jon Brown with 43% and 38% success respectively. Dave Liley and Andy Dawkins finished with above 33% and 29% success. End of year assessment “could do better” Team Statistics Played 85 frames Won 26 Lost 59 Weather takes toll: Barns Green Football Club Miserable Season
FOOTBALL
The club’s matches continue to be affect by unplayable pitches to 16th April. Continuity has affected performance the 1st Team has 4 matches to play before the end of April and the 2nd Team has 3 matches to play. Both teams will want to forget this season with 1st team lying 2nd from bottom and 2nd team lying last. 1st team player Ed Goacher is 7th top scorer in the in the division. Cricket Season Could be Delayed
CRICKET
At the time of writing this in mid – April, the village green is in a very poor state and has been far too wet to do any sort of cutting and preparation to the outfield. Work has been started on the square but again for the time of year this has been limited and we are way behind schedule, our main groundsman Trevor Courquin has been frustrated by the conditions to say the least. The club is hoping that the weather improves and by the time you read this the season will have started, fingers crossed – wish us luck. BGCC U12’s Win Indoor League The under 12’s have won their indoor league. Everyone that played has really enjoyed the winter league and have benefited from this and developed their cricket, huge thanks to Peter Kingsbury and Duncan Austin for running the BG teams. St Catherine's Hospice chosen as Barns Green Half Marathon Charity of the Year St Catherine's Hospice has been selected as the charity partner for this year's Barns Green Half Marathon. Sponsorship money and car park donations will help the local hospice raise funds for their vital work. Taking place on 25 September 2016, Barns Green is a half marathon not to be missed, and was voted 14th best half marathon in the country by Runners World.
This year, for the first time, there will be a brand new 10km race and the organisers are hoping the race will be bigger and better than ever before. Run on closed roads through beautiful Sussex countryside, the half marathon starts at Barns Green Village Hall on Muntham Drive, before passing through Horsham's historic Christ's Hospital school. Runners can enjoy music throughout the course and at the finishing line from live bands and, following the race, are invited to relax and enjoy tea, cakes and family friendly entertainment on the village green. ——————————————————————————————————————
News from your local Firestation at Billingshurst Fire-Fighters Charity Car Wash A Huge Success! Thank you to everyone that came down in March for our first charity car wash of the year. We were amazed by the generosity from our local community. We even had people making us cakes and others who didn't have time to pop in still made a donation as they drove past. We raised a staggering £671.78 which goes towards our chosen charity that looks after injured/ill firefighters and their families. This charity would not survive without fire stations holding these events so without you guys we wouldn't be able to do it, so once again a huge Thank You. The past few weeks have been busy on station. The new fire engine is certainly getting to know its new area. I'm glad to report nothing serious but calls during the day and evening is keeping us out of trouble! We have had a number of interest from new recruits wanting to join as we do have a few spaces available. Would being a retained on-call firefighter suit you? A new career which you can give something back to the community and be part of a great team on station. Come down on a Monday night from 1830-2130 to find out more. 14

Daylight Saving Time
In May 1916 the war altered time itself! Daylight saving time had been suggested in 1907 as a way to make the most of the long summer days by starting the working day earlier. Arguments raged for years over the pro and cons of the proposal and how it would be implemented. It was the war that finally galvanised the British Government to adopt what is now known as British Summer Time. The Summer Time Bill of 1916 was quickly passed through Parliament and the new scheme came into force on 21st May 1916, just a few weeks after the German nation had introduced a similar change.
THE DAYLIGHT SAVING ACT The Royal Assent was given to the Summer Time Bill on Wednesday afternoon. The Home Office have issued a notice regarding the operation of the Summer Time Act, stating that in the night of Saturday Sunday 20th – 21st May, at 2a.m., the time on all railways, at all Post Offices, and other Government establishments will be put forward one hour to 3a.m. The normal time will be restored at 2a.m. on the night of Saturday Sunday, 30th September – 1st October. WEST SUSSEX COUNTY TIMES 20 May 1916
At the local Post Office it was incumbent on the Peskett family to ensure that their business operated in accordance with the new times, and thus set the example for the residents of the village to follow. Clocks and time keeping were relatively new to residents of Barns Green. In an agricultural economy, the working day and its tasks were dictated by the daylight hours and the seasons. Clocks and pocket watches had long been expensive items well beyond the reach of an agricultural labourer, who had no real need to know exactly what time of day it was. It was the growth of the railways and the opening of a school in Itchingfield for the children of ordinary labourers that brought the necessity of keeping time into the daily lives of rural people in the later years of the 19th century. By this time mass produced clocks were more widely available and thus more affordable, so most homes would have a clock and a few labourers would have a pocket watch. To what extent this change of time was observed by the residents of Barns Green we do not know, but there was a significant portion of the national population who simply did not bother. 17
BARNS GREEN MONDAY CLUB Monday Club is a group for the over-60s of Barns Green and the surrounding area, it aims to promote the welfare of its members; provide companionship and interests; make available services to help them; give them the opportunity of giving service. The Club is run by a Committee formed from its membership and headed by a Group Leader. We are self-supporting, funds being raised by the generosity of our members. We meet on Mondays twice a month throughout the year. In the winter we meet in the Village Hall for a full programme of speakers, entertainments, quizzes etc, followed by a lovely home-made tea for which members make a small donation. In the summer we have a varied programme of coach outings when we try to cater for as many interests as possible. This coming summer we will be visiting Haskins Garden Centre at Angmering, spend the afternoon in Tunbridge Wells, visit Birdworld near Farnham, have our usual Strawberry Tea in the Village Hall, visit West Dean Gardens near Chichester, have a boat trip on Chichester Harbour, spend the day in Portsmouth, visit Bentley Wildfowl & Motor Museum in East Sussex, spend the day in Eastbourne, visit the gardens at Stonehealed Farm in Streat, near Burgess Hill, lunch in Littlehampton followed by a coastal drive, and lastly a mystery Autumn Drive. As you can imagine this all costs a lot of money, and we have been very lucky to have received grants from the Half Marathon Committee (£200), Barns Green Community Publications [Big Mag] (£200) and The Itchingfield Parish Calendar Committee (£190) to help us meet the cost of the coaches. We are really grateful to them for their support. Unfortunately our numbers have been dwindling and we need more members to help bolster our income. We especially would like some younger members who could eventually take over the running of the Club from some very elderly Committee Members who have served for many years. If you would like to join the Club or would like more information, please contact me. You don’t have to pay anything to join and you may come to meetings as little or as often as you like. We are a very friendly lot and you will be made very welcome. You don’t have to be over 60 and you don’t have to live in Barns Green as many of our members live in Southwater. Whether you wish to join as a participating member, or to come as a helper, please get in touch with me. WE NEED YOU. Eve Barrett. Leader. evebarrett@talktalk.net

BARNS GREEN & ITCHINGFIELD W.I. In March we had a speaker from Denmans, our W.I. headquarters in Chichester who brought with her many beautifully crafted items made by members of the W.I. She explained how they had been made and they were passed around for us to see more closely. We also had a group meeting in Warnham where four local W.I.s heard from Roger Hind, a talented musician, 'A Music Sentimental Journey' which was very entertaining. Our next meeting will be on May19th at 2.30pm, our 'Resolutions' meeting where we discuss topics put forward to debate. This will be followed by tea. Visitors are most welcome. Meetings are in the village hall unless otherwise stated. Miriam Coghill
