1ST BARNS GREEN AND ITCHINGFIELD RAINBOWS AND BROWNIES

Rainbows continue their Global Adventure giving plenty of opportunity for games and running around. The girls played a game about weather in different continents. Kanga was another favourite, trying to carry as many items as possible in a fabric cloth, something which some African women do each day. They saw just how difficult it is, but managed to work together in small teams to solve the problem! They made some very cute koala masks, learnt a new song about koalas and made spinning worlds to take home. Brownies had a great visit from a lady who taught them the Brownie Promise in sign language. It was amazing to see how well the girls responded to this, and the concentration from them to achieve the challenge. The new found skills were so good they were able to perform it to their parents at the end of the evening. The girls were able to experience a few other challenges during the night to help them understand what it might be like to live with a disability. They played our version of wheelchair volleyball. The girls had to stay sitting on their bottom, whilst playing volleyball. The all wrote their name in braille, which they really enjoyed. Also, they wrote with the ‘wrong’ hand and using their toes. As you can imagine, this caused a lot of laughter and they couldn’t believe how hard it was! The blindfold activities went down well too. Each girl had to listen to several everyday sounds and guess what they were. Then it was the ‘smell’ challenge. Could they distinguish some smells without being able to see the item? I think everyone got marmite! The final challenge was touch. Some of them were a bit nervous what they might be putting their hands into, but were relived to discover pasta, rice, flour and a few other familiar food items. Some of the girls were able to achieve their Disability Awareness badge during the course of the evening. Rainbows, Brownies and Guides are always looking for new ideas and visitors, so please get in touch if you would like to get involved in any way. In addition, we would love to hear from women who have, or have had an unusual job, or maybe a job, which isn’t usually held by a woman…

St Nicolas Church - Thoughts from your Vicar.

Christmas is coming At this time of year there is always a great sense of anticipation and of hope. As we make our plans for Christmas, we anticipate the variety of services which help us to celebrate the birth of Jesus: carol services, crib service, care home Rev. Sandra Hall services, the uniquely special service of the Midnight Eucharist and the Christmas Day Family Communion service. We anticipate the celebration of Jesus’ birth, not only because it is a great excuse for a bit of a party, but also because his birth gives us hope. Hope for the future. Hope in the midst of much that seems to be changing all around us. Our Christmas celebrations lead into celebrations of the new year, with a heightened sense of anticipation for all that 2017 might bring. Many will be praying that the next year will be better than the last; others will be going into the new year with a deep sense of anxiety and uncertainty. However we approach 2017, we should remember the wonderful promise which Jesus made to us: ‘remember that I am with you always; yes, to the end of time’ (Matthew 28, verse 20). Jesus promises to be there with us in whatever it is that life brings; in the happy times and in the sadnesses; in the pain and also in the joy. We are told in St John’s gospel, ‘God so loved the world that he gave his only son’. We make a fuss of celebrating Jesus’ birth because we are celebrating the truth of God’s love for each and every one of us, love which is shown to us in the person of Jesus Christ: God himself living as one of us, experiencing life, with all its joys and pains, and ultimately giving his life for us on the cross. When we begin to reflect on all of that, then we will understand something of why it is so important to make some space in our own lives to celebrate ‘The Birth’. You are all invited to church this Christmas with the genuine hope that if you are able to join in some, or maybe only one, of the Christmas services you will experience the true joy of the celebration of God’s unique and wonderful gift to the world; the gift of his son, our Lord Jesus Christ. With love in Christ, Revd Sandra Hall Telephone: 01403 790197 or email: sandra.richard@tiscali.co.uk 9

LOCAL SPORTS NEWS Contact our Sports Editor, Barry Hearnshaw by email: sports@barnsgreen.com Darts The Monday night Horsham Fives Darts league has started a new season with Barns Green competing in the first division after winning Division Two last year. The Green are stronger this year with the addition of top player Ron Clarke. Ron has does most things in darts including beating Eric Bristow three times! The first home match featured a visit from the Rising Sun, runners up last year and title contenders this year. The Green managed a 4 - 4 draw which was a decent start to our season. Doug Mason hit a 180 for the visitors. The next match was an away fixture at The Stout House, Horsham. The Green produced a great display to win 7 - 1 featuring a Ron Clarke 180. The Windmill from Littleworth were the next visitors and they proved too strong for the Green who went down 5 -3. One win one draw and one loss leaves The Green are top of Division one at present. Barns Green are through to their first final of the season as they squeezed through the play offs on less games conceded. In the final they will play the strong Rising Sun side containing five of the Barns Green Friday night side! The Friday night Horsham and District Dart league continued with a visit to The Railway, Billingshurst. The Green went 2 - 0 up but could not prevent a strong Railway side winning 6 - 3. The next league match was away at Roffey Social club which provided us with a 7 -2 win. The Star, Roffey were the next visitors. The Star are having a good season but the Green prevailed with a 7 - 2 win. The Friday night side currently lie third in the First Division.

Cricket Barns Green Cricket Club rounded off the hugely successful 2016 season with their awards night on November 4. Taking place at Horsham Cricket Club, there was plenty to celebrate for the BGCC boys. Young guns, Matt Cooper and Conor Blanchard picked up 1st and 2nd team most improved players respectively, with Cooper also winning the Sunday team Player of the Year. Tom Ott was awarded 2nd team Player of the Year, for yet another stunning season with the bat. Fast bowler, Sean Richardson, picked up the equivalent 1st team award, and the club wishes him well (but will miss his presence) as he embarks on a medical degree at Durham University. The biggest cheer of the night was reserved for young Greg Monk, who picked up the Bernie Toms Endeavour Award - recognising his amazing commitment and effort for both the Saturday and Sunday teams. With this year's season now closed, the club will hold its AGM on November 18, as they look forward to another exciting season in 2017. 10

Rugby Approaching the end of November and BGRFC sit nicely placed, third in Sussex Twobut with very much the pace of play increasing over the past three weeks as we have played three sides experienced at this higher level of rugby. The results show two losses against Pulborough Seconds and Ditchling and a then a well fought win against Rye, Seems to suggest the battle for a place in the top four in this league is going to be most competitive. With Newick at home on 26th November (14.30 KO) and then Sussex Police also at home (14.00hrs KO) on 17th Dec the run in to Christmas with Crowborough and East Grinstead, the league leaders, to play away remains hugely challenging but also absorbing as we strive to establish ourselves in a new league. Check out any final playing details or arrangements on our Barns Green RFC Facebook where you can also watch the amazing drone footage which Ian McBean has taken of our recent games. Football Barns Green 1st team continue to maintain their winning streak Division 2 North of BRICKABILITY West Sussex Football League. With 3 away wins in the last month against Rudgewick, Ewhurst and Yapton. They’re now lying second behind Border Wanders, having played 8 of their 16 league matches. Barns Green 2nd team early season form has held them in good stead as they’ve lost 2 matches and drawn 1 recently. They’re now lying 7th of 11 in Division 5 North of BRICKABILITY West Sussex Football League. But all is not lost, 3 forthcoming matches against other middle of the table teams, could potentially change the fortune of the team. Barns Green Junior Run This year’s event for the Under 10 year olds, sponsored by the Barns Green Half Marathon, saw an enthusiastic group of runners, all dressed for the part, looking like small Mo Farahs or Jo Paveys and their parents gather at the start line on a cold 6th November morning. Many of them were first timers to the event, whilst other runners recorded new PBs (Personal Bests). After warming up, which was needed since it was soooooo cold, the runners were off! This year’s course was new to all runners and was run twice around the village green, approx. 2000 metres in total. This year the runner who came first was Sophia Lopez, followed by Katy Chambers in 2nd place and Alexa Yokom in 3rd place. The 1st placed boy was 7-year-old Henry Hallett, paced by his coach and brother William, Henry came 4th overall, closely followed by Daniel Winder in 5th and Sara Chambers in 6th. Katy Chambers and sister Sara have been in training all year, both take part in the Horsham Park Run with their father Steve each week.

A group of other Under 10s enthusiastically completed the course including Arabella Bamsey, Charlie Bamsey, Emily Duda, Harry Law and James Potten. All runners received special medals presented by the race organisers. The race is organised by Paul Toms and his awesome team of volunteers Dave Robinson, Bod Rolf and Jill Toms. Report by Paul Toms 11

BARNS GREEN & ITCHINGFIELD W.I. We held our AGM in October and as our president, Barbara Hibbs, was standing down we had to elect a new one. Annette Relph and Sandra Morfey will hold the position jointly but for administrative purposes Annette is our president and Sandra vice president. Other posts are unchanged including the committee. Reports were given by the secretary and treasurer. Our Christmas lunch will be on December 7th at Random Hall which is for members only.

We have a new programme for 2017 and every month on the 3rd Thursday at 2.30pm we will be meeting in Barns Green village hall. New members will be made welcome. Miriam Coghill ————————————————————–—————-———————————--

An opportunity to help decide future plans for the Barns Green playground. The Barns Green Field Committee have some funds available to modernise the existing playground at Barns Green and have been discussing possible options. A popular suggestion was moving the entire playground and building a more modern, landscaped activity area on the other side of the social club. If you would like to join a steering group to liaise with specialist construction companies and Horsham District Council to plan and cost such a project please contact Jim Martin, Chairman of the Field Committee at 01403 733455 or by e-mail at jim@martinfamily5.plus.com —————————————————————————————————————

Wishing you a very happy Christmas and a wonderful New Year

From all the team at the BIG Mag. 12

News from the Parish Council Ditches and Hedges It is that time of year when the leaves are coming down fast and drains are liable to get blocked. We have spent a lot of time and effort on the Parish Council trying to do whatever we can to keep the drains in the Parish clear and all the surplus water going where it should go. One of the biggest concerns has been the water that runs down into the centre of the village from Muntham Drive and from Sandhills Road. Matt Treasure-Jones, one of our councillors has worked relentlessly to help with this problem and I am delighted to say that the problem at Muntham Drive has now been resolved. For the past few years excess water has been running off the land and down Muntham Drive creating a small “drainage channel” by the side of the road and eroding the road surface. When the work was completed on the new village car park, the need to resolve this problem increased and so a pipe under the road was reinstated at the expense of the Parish Council. Another pipe has now been installed to take the water away across Sumners Ponds land and thanks is due to Simon Smith for his great help with this. With regard to Sandhills Road, there has been a vehicle working on Sandhills Road jetting water through drains and hopefully helping to alleviate the problem of surface water running down this road into the centre of the village. However, the potential of flooding is something that we need to remain aware of and I would ask all land owners who have streams and drainage ditches to do whatever they can to keep these as clear as possible to enable all water to find its way into the proper channels and drains in order to prevent the potential of flooding. On a similar note anyone who has large hedges could they please ensure that these are cut and maintained regularly as this also helps to prevent blockages as well as keeping the village looking neat and tidy. Phone Box Many of you will be aware of the old phone box outside the village shop. It has not been in service for some time now but the Parish Council bought it for £1 a few years ago. This was to preserve it and to enable it to remain in the village. However, David and Pippa in the shop would like it moved to give themselves more space outside the shop. Providing moving it is not too costly we felt it would be an idea to move it to another location in the village and wondered if anyone had any thoughts on this or ideas about where it could be relocated. If so please get in touch with the Clerk; jancritchley@itchpc.freeserve.co.uk Dog Poo Recently we have had an increased number of complaints and comments about dog poo in the village and ways in which we can reduce this problem. We already have two dog poo bins – one by the new school and one at the crossroads. We are looking to find a location to install a new bin and wondered if people had any thoughts or ideas about this. The only restriction is that they have to be located close to the main roads so that the council can access them to empty the bins. Similarly if anyone has any views on this please get in touch with the Clerk; jancritchley@itchpc.freeserve.co.uk Penny Simpson, Chairman Itchingfield Parish Council 14

SUMNERS PONDS FISHERY AND CAMPSITE NAMED AA CAMPSITE OF THE YEAR FOR THE SOUTH EAST 2017 A Barns Green Fishery and Campsite has won a top prize from the AA Caravan and Camping Awards. Sumners Ponds was named AA Campsite of the Year for the South East. The competition judges said “Dedication by the Smith family to provide high quality camping continues apace at this working farm set in attractive surroundings on the edge of the quiet village of Barns Green. There are three well-laid out touring areas; the original field has a mix of neat grass and spacious hardstanding pitches, and a small, newly refurbished toilet and shower block; the middle field continues to develop and includes camping pods and extra hardstandings; the lakeside area, which has a stunning modern toilet block, has excellent pitches on the banks of one of the wellstocked fishing lakes. Here you will also find perfectly located camping pods, a fully equipped safari tent, and four new shepherd’s huts, all enjoying private lakeside views. There are many cycle paths on site and the woodland bluebell walk has direct access to miles of footpaths. The brilliant Café by the Lake has proved so popular that it now has extensive lakeside seating, a posh safari tent with sofas and extra seating, and outside is a new barbecue hut. It’s licensed, and serves meals from breakfast onwards”.

Merve Goddard 01403 734408 merve.goddard@btinternet.com Mary Hallett ww1@barnsgreen.com The war was expensive. Feeding and clothing millions of servicemen, a massive increase in the production of weapons and ammunition for them, and the constantly growing infrastructure being built to support the trench warfare, was costing the Government huge sums of money. Despite all the local activity knitting socks, making shirts, collecting eggs and making jam, what the Government needed above all was money, so a new National Savings Scheme was started and War Savings Associations were formed in parishes across the land. A meeting of residents was held. . . to discuss plans for the formation of a War Savings Association. It was decided that such an association be started, entitled “The Itchingfield and District War Savings Association” . . . Monday Aug 14th was fixed as the first day for making contributions, from 6.30 to 7p.m., at the Village Hall Barns Green, and each Monday from that date. . ITCHINGFIELD PARISH MAGAZINE

ITCHINGFIELD AND DISTRICT WAR SAVINGS ASSOCIATION - It was resolved no amounts less than sixpence should be received. . . .Subscriptions to commence Monday 11th Sept . . .and on every subsequent Monday at Village Hall Barns Green . . . .6.30 - 7 p.m. . ITCHINGFIELD PARISH MAGAZINE And it was not just civilians at home who were encouraged to save, but servicemen themselves. Eneas Miles of Valewood had enlisted in August 1915, despite being 47 years old and well over the maximum age limit for military service and like many men, Eneas chose to invest some of his army pay into War Savings, and his surviving service record includes his Savings Certificate. Picture Left: Eneas Miles’ War Savings Certificate from his service records (image courtesy of TNA) Picture Right: War Savings Association Membership Card – the swastika symbol used on the card was (and still is) a symbol of good luck, it was only during WW2 that it became associated with fascism. 16

BARNS GREEN ‘GREEN FINGERS’ Our page for local gardening enthusiasts. Our gardening reporter is Barry Hearnshaw. ————————— Wakehurst Place Botanical Gardens

Open throughout the year, Wakehurst is the country estate of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew and is leased from the National Trust whilst managed by Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. Wakehurst is situated just south of Turners Hill and north of the village of Ardingly. The South of England Agricultural Showground is just a little further south. The varied landscape is of international significance for its beautiful botanic gardens and tree collections, as well as for its science-based plant conservation and research. A feast for the senses, Wakehurst features 500 acres of natural woodland and lakes, formal gardens, an Elizabethan house (five unfurnished rooms) and the 21st-century architecture of Kew's Millennium Seed Bank. Wakehurst marked an international conservation milestone in 2010, having conserved seeds from ten per cent of the world's plant species. A visit will not go unrewarded, throughout the year Wakehurst holds special events, Free daily guide tours, Glow Wild winter lantern festival, until 18th December and Brilliant Bark Trail.

Then the gardens themselves have special features :- National Birch Collection Bethlehem Wood, National Southern Beech Collection - Coates’ Wood, Bloomers Valley is an open sweep of countryside running between Coates and Horsebridge Woods, with the Rock Walk running along its southern fringe, Himalayan Glade lies in a deep cleft on the north side of the Westwood Valley to name a few of the features. Wakehurst place is not a garden to be seen in a day, its 500 acres will draw you back time and time again. Wakehurst Place is a Sussex Treasure and not to be missed. 18

Plant of the Month Lonicera x purpusii 'winter beauty' A unique shrub, as the train of thought would be that all Loniceras are summer flowering. This one is an exception to the rule and is winter flowering.

A medium to large shrub which is ideal in a mixed border, to add continual seasonal interest. Maximum height is around 6ft(2m). Flowers are borne in small clusters of white, tubular flowers with prominent yellow anthers cling to bare branches in the depths or winter on deciduous branches, exuding fragrance. After flowering mid-winter foliage appears, colour mid to lime green with red stems. Report by Mark Pierce. Your Friendly Local Nurseryman

Jobs for the month of December It's getting even colder Frost, rainfall and winds are increasingly common, sunshine hours are much reduced and it can be bitter with a risk of snow. You may not want to be working outside at this time of year, but luckily there's not a lot to do. Keep an eye on winter protection, and if you have a greenhouse, make sure the heater works 10 jobs this month 1 Check your winter protection structures are still securely in place 2 Check that greenhouse heaters are working 3 Insulate outdoor taps and prevent ponds from freezing 4 Prune open-grown apples and pears (but not those trained against walls) 5 Prune acers, birches and vines before Christmas to avoid bleeding 6 Harvest leeks, parsnips, winter cabbage, sprouts and remaining root crops 7 Deciduous trees and shrubs can still be planted and transplanted 8 Take hardwood cuttings 9 Keep mice away from stored produce 10 Reduce watering of houseplants

Merry Christmas from Billingshurst Fire Fighters Our drink driving campaign runs throughout the year but we especially like to highlight the dangers of getting behind a wheel around this time of the year. Christmas parties and plenty of social gatherings is the perfect excuse to have a drink but we are the ones that have to pick up the mess when that persons makes the wrong decision of driving home after a night out under the influence of alcohol. We can't stress enough the aftermath on families when someone is involved in a Road Traffic Collision caused by a drink driver. That split moment when you think you are in control and then before you know it, it’s too late! Please, please, get a lift from friends or even put money aside for a taxi home. We want everyone to have a safe and enjoyable Christmas this year. Staying in with a hot cuppa in front of the fire, make sure your Chimney has been swept! Indications of a chimney fire have been described as creating: loud cracking and popping noise, a lot of dense smoke, and an intense, hot smell. We will attend our fair share of chimney fires over the coming months, so having it swept will reduce these calls. As always we will be on call over the Christmas period to keep you and the community safe but please do your bit so we get to spend time with our families and also dig into a few mince pies. From everyone at Station 49, Billingshurst, we would like to wish you a very Merry Christmas & and Happy New Year.

Are you in Years 7-11? Come and join us at Barns Green Youth Club Thursdays during term time. 7pm-9pm at Barns Green Village Hall. Our sessions include table tennis, table football, various sports, cooking, circus skills, film nights, karaoke and arts and crafts. Just ÂŁ1.50 per session.
