St Nicolas Church - Thoughts from your Vicar. The Christian liturgical journey towards Easter this year begins in February. Shrove Tuesday (9th) is a term used for the day preceding Ash Wednesday. The word shrove is the past tense of the English verb to shrive, which means to obtain absolution for one's sins by way of confession and doing penance. During the week before Lent, sometimes called Shrovetide, Christians were expected to go to confession in preparation for the penitential season of turning to God. The day is often known as Pancake Day. Making and eating pancakes was considered a last feast with ingredients such as sugar, fat and eggs, whose consumption was traditionally restricted during the ritual fasting associated with Lent.

Rev. Sandra Hall

Ash Wednesday (10th) is the first day of Lent; it marks the beginning of six and a half weeks of repentance, fasting, prayer and abstinence in preparation for the most important Christian festival of Easter. It is a moveable feast, falling on a different date each year because it is dependent on the date of Easter. It can occur as early as February 4th or as late as March 10th. Ash Wednesday has never yet occurred on a Leap Year Day (February 29th), but it will in the year 2096. During the Ash Wednesday service, the sign of the cross is made with ashes onto the foreheads of worshipers as a sign of mourning and repentance to God, this is how Ash Wednesday derived its name. It is a way of showing God that we are sorry for the wrong things we have done in the past year. Ashes were used in ancient times, according to the Bible, to express mourning. Dusting oneself with ashes was the penitent's way of expressing sorrow for sins and faults. The ashes used nowadays are gathered after the palms from the previous year's Palm Sunday are burned. Lent recalls the events leading up to and including Jesus' crucifixion. It is a season of reflection and preparation before the celebrations of Easter. Only a small number of people today fast for the whole of Lent, it is more common these days to surrender a particular vice such as favourite foods, drink or smoking. Whatever the sacrifice, it is a reflection of Jesus' deprivation in the wilderness and a test of self-discipline. May God bless your endeavours this Lent, whatever they entail. Please do contact me if you would like a chat or a visit. Telephone: 01403 790197 or email: sandra.richard@tiscali.co.uk With love in Christ, Revd Sandra Hall 5

Barns Green & Itchingfield Neighbourhood Plan As you may be aware, Itchingfield Parish Council is developing a Neighbourhood Plan. This is a major task that will take time and money to complete but it is important that we do it in an effort to give ourselves as much protection as possible from unwanted future developments. So what is Neighbourhood Planning? Essentially it is a relatively new scheme designed to give local communities the chance to decide the future of the places where they live and work by giving them the opportunity to

• • •

Choose where they want new homes, shops and offices to be built Have their say on what those new buildings should look like Grant permission for any new buildings they want to see go ahead

Following on from the Annual Village Meeting, a steering group of 12 people has now been established consisting of 4 Parish Councillors and 8 local volunteers. They are being advised by AIRS (Action in Rural Sussex) and have been having regular meetings. Minutes from these meetings are available on the Parish council website.

There will be an opportunity for you to have your say on Saturday 6th February 2016 at 10.30-12.00noon at the Village Hall. In order to attend you will need to pre-register. Once you’ve pre-registered, please come along and tell us what you think and how you would like Barns Green and Itchingfield to develop in the future. We need your opinions and ideas and there will be a chance to join a focus group if you are interested in any particular aspect of the future of our parish. (refreshments will be provided at the meeting) You can pre register your interest in attending this meeting by logging on to our newly revamped website; www.itchingfieldparishcouncil.org.uk Click on “Contact the Clerk” and leave a message indicating your interest in attending the meeting, or contact the Parish Clerk, Jan Critchley; jan.critchley@itchpc.freeserve.co.uk (refreshments will be provided) Attendance will be limited to those who have pre-registered. 6

Merve Goddard 01403 734408 merve.goddard@btinternet.com Mary Hallett ww1@barnsgreen.com James William Lee Not everyone listed on the Itchingfield War Memorial was a long term resident of the Parish. James Lee had no family in the village but must have lived and worked in Barns Green for a number of years, and must have been considered part of the community to be commemorated on the Itchingfield War Memorial. Local aural history tells us that Ethel Killick of Floss Cottage lost her fiancée during the war, and it seems highly likely that this was James Lee. James was born in Lower Caldecott in Bedfordshire where his father, also James, was a pub landlord and gardener. Like many men in rural occupations, James junior had to move to wherever work was available and by 1914 he was in Barns Green working as a gardener. He enlisted at Arundel in mid-September and joined the 9th Bn Royal Sussex Regiment. For the next year he trained with the regiment and in August 1915 embarked for France. In September, in just four days of fighting, the Regiment lost over 100 men, but on this occasion, James was one of the lucky ones. Over the winter months, trench warfare generally ground to a halt in the cold, wet winter conditions, but in February the Germans began a heavy bombardment of the 9th Sussex’s trench positions at Hooge near Ypres. The shelling was a diversion to distract any possible attention away from the Germans tunnellers working their way towards the British trenches. Then at 5.45 on the morning of the 14th February two mines were exploded under the 9th Sussex trenches. The War Diary reports men being “hoisted into the air and many men buried”. James was one of them. He is commemorated on a mass grave at Menin Road South Military Cemetery shared with many of his comrades who died at the same time, indicating that it was not possible to identify individual bodies after the explosion.

Grave of James Lee. Photo: Roger Pitts

The attack also produced one of the Royal Sussex Regiment’s Victoria Crosses, awarded to Lieutenant Eric McNair who fought a brave rear-guard action from the edge of the crater produced by the explosion before crossing open ground twice to recruit and then lead back reinforcements. 7

LOCAL SPORTS NEWS Contact our Sports Editor, Barry Hearnshaw by email: sports@barnsgreen.com

Darts The Monday night darts team started 2016 with an excellent 7 -1 win over title rivals The Cock Inn who were previously unbeaten. Barns Green's John Coxon hit his second 180 of the season and Kevin Bance hit three 140's in a man of the match performance on his full debut. All five Barns Green players won their singles matches. The team sit eleven points clear of their rivals at the half way point to the season. Barns Green Club also hosted the Division One Doubles Competition with 30 players from Horsham and District competing on the excellent new boards which is a reward for the investment the club have put in. Late December saw 6-3 home a win against Roffey Cricket Club and a 7 - 2 away win over The Rising Sun for the Friday night team. They also had a good start to the New Year with an 8 -1 win over Broadbridge Heath Sports Club. This helps cement second place in the league again at the halfway stage of the season. John Coxon

Waterlogged pitches cause havoc for Barns Green Rugby and Football Teams Barns Green Rugby and Football teams have been severely affected by the wet weather and they look likely to suffer again for the foreseeable future as the wet weather continues to disrupt the fixtures calendar. Already soaked pitches are being affected by further rain, forcing teams to declare its pitches unplayable on a weekly basis due to standing water. All three rugby and football teams wait for the first game this year and this will wait will continue in the short term. Postponements of matches leaves all three teams facing an increasing fixture backlog. The inevitable pile up of matches towards the end of the campaign is likely to have an impact on every side in each team’s respect divisions. The representatives of the rugby and football teams – Bill Bailey and football Jason Dumbrill both say they have never seen anything like it in all of the time they have been involved their respective sports. They have never seen so many games affected by the rain so early in the season. 8

Bill says “A really frustrating period of cancelled fixtures, waterlogged pitches and a fixture list with cup and league games is starting to look very back-ended. We sit very nicely placed in Sussex “Orangeboom” League Two West and are targeting a top two finish, but to do that we need the weather to drastically improve!” Sussex “Orangeboom” League Two West Table (Top 3 Teams of 11) P

Having football matches postponed and only playing three1st team games in November and December is infuriating says Jason. The 1st team is lying mid table and through to the next round of cup. Of those three games, Barns Green won 2 games and Ed Goacher scored 6 goals. Making Ed the clubs top scorer. Ed has another string to his bow, being a past participant on X Factor who got through to the Boot Camp stage. The 2nd team have been fortunate in having played 13 league matches but have only won one match and lay at the bottom of the division.

1ST BARNS GREEN AND ITCHINGFIELD RAINBOWS AND BROWNIES A group of Rainbows, Brownies, Leaders and parents watched this year’s Players Panto, Not Quite the Three Musketeers. Another brilliant performance and it’s fair to say everyone had a brilliant afternoon. We look forward to the 2017 production already! BROWNIES KNIT AND NATTER The Brownies have a started their knitting challenge, and we have been supported by the Trefoil Guild, local villagers and members of the church. A great start to the year. On the 13th January, brownies had a knitting evening. We are going to make a bow-hairclip. The trickiest part for me was the beginning as we had to do something called 'casting on'. I also liked the actual knitting part, which was way easier. I never knew knitting would be so much fun!! By Maya Ryley

Three girls have moved up from Rainbows to Brownies, and we welcome four new girls to our Rainbows unit. Rainbows start the New Year with the Roundabout the World badge. So far they have made large rainforest collages using recycled materials. The end results were fantastic and the children really enjoyed getting involved and working together. Both Rainbows and Brownies have been finding out about the RSPB’s Big Garden Bird Watch and many of the children have taken part in the count. All have made a variety of different bird feeders to take home to encourage birds to visit their gardens. There are plenty of plans for the term ahead, treasure hunts, a hike, a night of mud activities, baking, plenty of spring related crafts, a games night, a trip to the Aqua Disco, a couple of party nights, Chinese New Year to name a few. The girls will experience a huge variety of activities, challenging themselves, making new friends and earning badges along the way. A canal trip, a film night, a weekend away and a sleepover are all in the pipeline as well. Continued on next page…. 10

Rainbows and Brownies continued... A massive thank you to everyone who supported the Parish Calendar project. Rainbows, Brownies and Guides were involved in selling and buying these, and this has enabled us to receive some much needed funding. The Guide Unit (aged 10-14) currently has spaces for immediate start. A couple of the Guides help with our Rainbows unit each week, which all girls seem to enjoy. There are plans for camp, weekend away, swimming, canoeing, cooking and a variety of activities from all around the world to celebrate the Senior Section of guiding being 100 years old. Last term the girls earnt a variety of badges; Performing arts badge, Confectioners and Peace and enjoyed a night at the campsite. To volunteer or register your daughter’s interest visit www.girlguiding.org.uk/joinus. For more details please ring Fiona 738806.

Letters to the Editor. We don’t usually publish anonymous letters in the BIG Mag, but this warning from the parents of a 10 year old Barns Green girl is important. Her parents have asked that they are not named so that the child is protected from any further distress. Editor ANAPHYLAXIS “If you or a member of your family suddenly had an allergic reaction to something would you know what to do? During the festive period, our 10 year old daughter had a severe allergic reaction. She has never had an allergic reaction before and after eating one small bite of rocky road, her tongue started tingling and swelling immediately. I gave her 10ml of liquid Piriton (more than the recommended amount for her age), and yet, within minutes her face and tongue had swollen. By the time I was on the phone to out of hour’s doctors, she was struggling to breathe. The next call was for an ambulance, and already her epiglottis was resting on her tongue and hives had started to appear all over her body. This was all within about 10 minutes. Arriving at hospital, she was given further medication. The Doctor advised me that giving her the Piriton probably saved her life. The cost of a bottle of liquid Piriton is only about £4. After our experience, please help spread the word to encourage everyone to have this in their medicine. cupboard. (the liquid reacts faster than tablets) Hopefully, you won’t need it, and you replace it when it is out of date. Our daughter had never experienced something like this before, so for the sake of a few pounds, I urge you all to be prepared”. Barns Green Primary School Governors’ Report, Autumn Term 2015 The opening ceremony of the new building and fete in September was an outstanding day for Barns Green, for its values of community and inclusion, and its commitment to children’s education. In the presence of Horsham’s new MP, Jeremy Quin, and many other invited guests, the school was officially opened by two current pupils and Mr Ronald Baldwin, who at 93, attended the old Victorian school building way back in 1929. The school received such positive feedback from parents, pupils and visitors, and the Governing Body, on behalf the children, would like to thank the numerous volunteers who make that day so special and helped to seamlessly transition the school towards its new beginnings. In terms of teaching and learning, the school has identified three key priorities for 2015/2016. The first is to implement the new assessment procedures for measuring attainment and progress across all Key Stages, an area in which Barns Green has become a centre of excellence in the immediate locality. The second focus is enhancing the use and impact of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) across the curriculum. And thirdly, the school needs to leverage and fully maximise the many opportunities afforded from the new school facilities on children’s learning. Continued on next page... 12

Continued….. The annual review of the school’s results was held in November in the presence of Governors and an independent advisor to check progress and attainment at all Key Stages and set pupil targets for 2015/2016 and beyond. Pupil progress in the last academic year was fully in line with expectations and the good news is that the gap between attainment in writing as compared to maths and reading - a priority improvement area for the school - is closing. In the terms of community liaison, the school has coordinated some issues related to parking. Contractors from Berkeley Homes are now parking at the social club and adjacent to the tennis courts instead of along Two Mile Ash Road. Horsham District Council has proposed expanding the area for double yellow restrictions and also to add Keep Clear diagonal zones to further facilitate traffic flow. The school’s community room is being increasingly used for a range of activities and interested parties should contact the school office. In the last week of term, the children performed their Nativity play - for the first time ever in the new school hall. In front of a packed audience, following invitations to the WI, Monday Club. PTA, local residents and parents, the pupils’ acting and singing was magnificent. The Governing Body would like to recognize the many people who supported this fantastic, joyous, uplifting event.
