St Nicolas Church - Thoughts from your Vicar.
One of my favourite stories about a school nativity service is of the little boy who wanted to play the part of Joseph. He was very disappointed to be given instead the part of the innkeeper, but he appeared to accept his teacher’s decision and got on with his part in the play. However, on the day of the performance, in front of Rev. Sandra Hall a school hall packed with parents, the boy took his revenge. When Joseph and Mary asked him if there was any room in his inn, he abandoned the script, stood back so that the door to the inn was wide open and said, ‘yes there’s plenty of room; come on in!’ That might not be the way the familiar story goes but I think the little boy’s actions have some things to say to us at Christmas. We all are invited to ‘come in’ to greet the holy child, born into such very humble surroundings. All will be welcomed to the variety of different services which the church offers at Christmas as we join together in celebrating the birth of Jesus, the one who comes to save us and bring us joy. God welcomes each and every one of us. He does not want anyone to be turned away, because he loves each of us so much. God has shown the depth of that love in his unique gift to us; the gift of his son, born as one of us, part of a loving human family; the one who was willing ultimately to give his life for us, so that we might share in his life, for ever. At Christmas, God welcomes us all to celebrate the birth of his son, the one who brings hope to the world. God invites us to come in because he has made sure that there is room for us all. You are warmly invited to join us at all or any of our services. On behalf of St Nicolas Church may I wish everyone in the parish a wonderful Christmas season, may you know the rich blessing of the Christ-child in your life this Christmas as you enjoy the wonderful truth of God’s love for us wrapped up in swaddling bands and lying in a manger. Please do contact me if you would like a chat or a visit. Telephone: 01403 790197 or email: sandra.richard@tiscali.co.uk With love in Christ, Revd Sandra Hall 5

LOCAL SPORTS NEWS Contact our Sports Editor, Barry Hearnshaw by email: sports@barnsgreen.com The village boasts sports clubs/organisations and facilities representing Football, Cricket, Rugby, Stool Ball, Tennis, Snooker, Darts, Half Marathon, Fishing (Sumners) Etc. Local sports clubs/organisations interested in reporting to the community about their progress in the BIG Mag should email Sports editor at sports@barnsgreen.com Darts After a long absence darts has made a comeback in Barns Green. In 2011 a new team was formed for the Monday night 'Horsham Fives League'. Starting in Division 2 Barns Green came runners up in the 2013/14 season but could not stay in Division 1 and were relegated last year. This year the team are currently top of Division 2. The current team consists of John Coxon (captain), Jason Courquin, Stephen Courquin, Jason Cooper ('The Machine'), Chris Snelling and Frank Pickett, Tim Leaney and Shane Reynolds. Also we could not exist without Karen Cooper who diligently provides the food. Recent recruit Frank Pickett is an ex-Sussex county 'A' team player and his experience will no doubt help the younger players. Frank has currently the whole league's top outshot of 122 with John Coxon third on 115. John is also third in the 180 list. Our venue at Barns Green Sports and Social Club has an excellent stage and board for the games, and we have often been chosen to hold Cup semi-finals and finals. The club have just taken another leap with two more high quality boards being installed which will enable the holding of tournaments.
The two new high quality boards installed to facilitate matches and competitions at Barns Green Sports and Social Club.
Recently the club committee granted permission for a Friday night side Roffey B, who play in the 'Horsham and District League' to change venues to Barns Green with immediate effect. This side finished second in Division One last year and also won the coveted Victory Cup. This year Alan Wyatt and John Coxon were pairs semi-finalists and both trebles teams we entered also made the semi-finals. The ethos we try to keep is to have a good night of entertainment whilst also trying to maintain a reasonable standard of darts. If you would like to play in a team, contact John Coxon or just bring your darts and have a go! John Coxon 8
Barns Green Snooker Club. October has been a difficult month for 2 of the three Barns Green Teams in the Horsham and District Snooker League. A Team (Division 1) Won 2 of the last 4 games and are 2nd in the Division at the end of October. Barns Green A beat Roffey D away 3 – 2 and Pulborough B at home 4 – 1 but have just lost against Loxwood A at home 2 – 3 and Horsham Club C 2 – 3. Trevor Courquin is undefeated in 6 matches along with Mick Brown (super sub) who is undefeated in 2 while Roy Francis has won 3 of his 4 matches. B Team (Division 2) Won 1 of their last 4 games and are 10th of 11 in the Division at the end of October. Barns Green B beat Roffey E 3 – 2 but lost to Holbrook Club 2 – 3, Balcoombe Lowfield 2 -3 and Horsham Club Casuals 2 – 3. Results would have been much heavier except Andy High has won 5 out of 6 of his matches and Ben Hill has won 3 out of 5 of his matches, C Team (Division 3) Won 1 of their last 4 games and are 8th of 10 in the Division at the end of October. Barns Green beat YMCA A 3 – 2 but have lost to Rudgwick B 1 – 4 and to both Rudgwick E and Rusper A 2 – 3. Football Both Barns Green Teams have had a difficult October fielding teams for matches, particularly because of players work commitments. However, early season results have ensured that the 1st team maintains a middle of the table position but have still only won 1 of 5 matches in October. The 2nd team has been more unfortunate in losing all 5 matches. Unfortunately for the second team they have also lost players to fill 1st team but also have many young players. The average age of the team is about 20 years which bodes well for the future. The 2nd team is short of a manager and would consider anybody interested in filling the roll. Jose Mourinho, Brendan Rodgers, and Stuart (Burt) Lancaster need not apply. Individuals interested in the manager’s position should contact either:Jay Dumbrill 07788278466 or John Bacon 07876694685

RUGBY This past month has seen only one game played by BGRFC, due to a combination of postponements due to the weather or gaps in the fixture list to watch the closing Rugby World Cup games. A narrow 17-10 loss to unbeaten Brighton 3rd Team leaves the Club looking forward eagerly to the return game with them, at home, in February. Barns Green sit just behind Brighton at the top of the table in Sussex Two West with two key games before Christmas - Pulborough Thirds at home on Dec 12th and St Francis Away on Dec 20th. The lack of rugby on the pitch has given us time to begin to plan our two big events of 2016 'Simons Charity Tag Sevens' which this year raised over ÂŁ6,000 for children's charities and our 25 year anniversary dinner. More details on both these events will follow. Bill Bailey

Merve Goddard 01403 734408 merve.goddard@btinternet.com Mary Hallett ww1@barnsgreen.com The first name on the First World War Memorial Plaque in St Nicholas Church is that of Henry Bennet. Henry was the son of Frederick Bennet, a brickmaker of Cross Lane, and the nephew of Henry Bennet of Trout Lane who actually owned the brickworks in Cross Lane and at Dog Barking Corner. Henry junior also started his working life in the brickworks but followed the call to serve in December 1915, signing up for the Royal Sussex Regiment. It appears however that his early years in the brickworks had taken its toll on his health. His uncle Henry had in fact died in 1904 at the age of just 34 of silicosis, a disease commonly associated with the trade, and young Henry is recorded as suffering with respiratory problems throughout his basic training. He was sent to the front in 1916 however and his time in the trenches exacerbated his problems which quickly developed into tuberculosis. Henry was invalided out of the army with a small pension in April 1917 and, after a period in a sanatorium at Ockley, was sent home to Cross Lane where he died of the illness in May 1919. Although being granted a pension, which in effect recognised that his illness was service related, and despite the fact that his sacrifice was clearly noted and honoured by the community, until December 2014 his death was not formally recognised by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission. Some of you may be aware that following a joint approach by the project team working with the “In From The Cold” organisation this was eventually rectified and Henry’s name is now listed in the official United Kingdom Book of Remembrance. I am now delighted to announce that actions are now in hand to provide Henry with a full CWGC headstone for where he lies in the churchyard of Holy Innocents, Southwater. The CWGC contacted the Rev Godfrey of Holy Innocents and erection of the memorial is expected before the end of the year. The Rev Godfrey is now planning a proper dedication service for the Spring and we will keep you all informed through these articles. In the meantime remember that you can read more about the lives and times of our parish in the Great War in our books - “Service and Sacrifice” and “Life On The Home Front” – on sale now. (See our website at www.barnsgreenswar.uk or contact me on 01403 734408 for more details.) STOP PRESS: We have been working very closely with Christs Hospital School for our project and Assistant Archivist Elizabeth Bridges has made a very kind offer for Big Mag readers. CH has archives dating back to the schools foundation some 500 years ago and some of this is displayed in the form of a small museum. The museum is also currently hosting a display relating to WW1 and Elizabeth would like to extend an offer to visit to any locals or local groups who would like to see both. There will be a small charge but it will be a rare chance to see this fascination collection from an establishment which has been closely linked to our community for over 100 years. If anyone is interested would like to contact me (734408 or ww1@barnsgreen.com). I will collect names and numbers and pass them on to Elizabeth. 13

The Honey Bee v The Wasp By local bee keeper, Gill Walker. We all know what a hard time our honeybees are having to survive. Disease, varroa mites, pesticides, loss of flora to name but a few of their problems they attempt to overcome. This year has seen invasions of swarms of wasps out to kill and steal bees, larvae and honey. What battles these wonderful honeybees have alongside the hard work they have building their combs, tending their Queen and raising their young. They forage for nectar and pollen, hoping to return before perhaps a downpour of rain brings them to the ground until their wings dry; or a drop in temperature to make them hasten back to their lovely warm hive – 38c, even in winter. Upon returning to the hive, they process the nectar into honey and turn the pollen into little patties with which to feed their developing brood. They really are busy bees. This hard work comes to the mind and sympathy of the beekeeper for the bee when the skies are suddenly alive with wasps above and at the entrances to the beehives. In the Spring, wasps are hunting for insects with which to feed their young. They capture their prey and dissect it before flying off with it to their nests. Later in the Summer, the wasp is looking for sweet substances such as fruit from the orchard or jam as we sit enjoying a cream tea in our garden. They also love honey. Upon my weekly Summer inspection, I discovered that all 3 hives were being invaded by a constant army of wasps which was killing the bees, stealing the brood and eating all the honey – the bees’ food to see them through this coming winter. Finding all this devastation was heart-breaking. Their precious combs empty and the bees lying dead on the floor; their battles lost against the multi-stinging wasp and their own, single, sacrificial sting. I had 3 hives; I now only have 1 which was the largest colony and perhaps more capable of defending their precious home. I am feeding them with sugar syrup to make up for their stolen honey. Honeybees need plenty of winter stores for them to survive and take them into next Spring . With the stored syrup which they will have converted to honey and the help of the last autumn flowers, plus some late winter snowdrops, crocus and other nectar-rich winter flowers, we so hope they make it. Next Spring, on finding a wasps’ nest - perhaps in our lofts, sheds, barns or hedges we may need to make a choice on keeping wasps and saving bees. How doth the little busy bee Improve our shining hour, And gather honey all the day From every opening flower! How skilfully she builds her cell! How neat she spreads the wax! And labours hard to store it well With the sweet food she makes. Poem by Isaac Watts 15
Barns Green Playgroup Fundraising Report The Fundraising team would like to thank everyone who baked cakes and helped out on the cake stall at the Half Marathon. We had a lovely day and raised over £600 after costs on the day. We were amazed by the amount of cakes, so a massive thank you to you all. A special thank you form all at Playgroup for the support with the water station too. The Fundraising team are busy preparing for the Christmas Fair on Saturday 5th December from 2 to 5 pm. On the day, we would love to see you all. Please bring the children to see Santa in his grotto! We have a selection of stalls selling various items and bar with plenty of mulled wine and Christmassy treats. The school children will also be singing again. If you fancy helping out on the day, please speak to a member of the fundraising team. Last year, the fair raised £800 and is a worthwhile event and enjoyable event! The village's continued support for Playgroup is much appreciated. Together we raise valuable funds for the benefit of the children at Playgroup. Thank you! Anne-Marie, Laura, Britt, Victoria, Anita, Kate and Debbie at playgroup
Autumn Craft Fair raised £1,000 for church.
An Autumn Craft Fair was held by Itchingfield PCC in aid of St Nicolas Church on Saturday 7th November in Barns Green Village Hall. A lot of effort went into arranging tables and setting up the St Nicolas Table Top Shop on the Friday night. Special thanks go to Tony West and Bob Dorkings for setting up the model railway exhibition for kids young and old! A bit of midnight oil was burnt getting everything ready for Saturday morning. The weather was atrocious but we had a steady stream of visitors throughout the day and the raffle and refreshments proved very popular. Our stallholders had a steady trade and many of them want to return next year which is a good sign of a successful fair. We raised around £1000 towards the Fabric of the Church. Thank you to everyone who supported us on the day. Report by Ian McBean 16
Fourth Bridge Drive at Barns Green Village Hall raises over £850 in aid of St. Nicolas’ Church This event, in October, was well attended, there being thirteen tables of four in the village hall to play bridge in either the Chicago or Rubber Bridge format. A hardworking and dedicated team of ladies had organised the occasion and provided coffee or tea on arrival, a fine lunch – main courses and desserts, and all seemed to be very well pleased with all that was on offer. The many cooks are to be congratulated for their tasty efforts. The total raised for the Church was around £850 which was very satisfying for the organisers. Included in that amount were the proceeds from a raffle and a very warm “thank you” is extended to those who kindly and generously donated raffle prizes. David Redston.

1ST BARNS GREEN AND ITCHINGFIELD RAINBOWS AND BROWNIES The children have had a great month. Bonfire night celebrations, involving making chocolate bonfires and sparklers, which just had to be eaten! Topped off with eating hot dogs round a campfire. Libby, one of our Brownies has written a great account of the night. A group of Rainbows and Brownies joined in the village Remembrance Service and did so well carrying their flags, being responsible for the collection and some readings. A big highlight since our last BIG Mag entry was being asked to take part in BLUE PETERS WORLD RECORD ATTEMPT FOR CHILDREN IN NEED. Units were selected for their positive involvement in the local area and we were picked out due to our Macmillan Fundraising event. The Brownies had to design a spot to be added with others to make the biggest superhero cape. The girls had lots of great ideas and worked really well as a team deciding on the design, which were the artists, who were the writers and the final layout. By the time you read this, we hope that our Brownie unit has been part of a successful new World Record. GO Barns Green and Itchingfield ! NOWHURST CAMPSITE VISIT FOR BONFIRE NIGHT The Brownies and Rainbows made an insect house out of a recycled cardboard box, some straw and it had bricks and roof tiles on top. We stuffed it with conkers, pinecones, twigs and straw to make the bed. We made a hedgehog house using twigs and dry leaves and to make it waterproof a ripped up bag went over the top. Hopefully a hedgehog will live in there. Then we sat on logs and made a fire, we sang songs and had lots of fun. Right before we went home we all got a sparkler and the grown ups lighted them and shared them around. We all had to wear gloves and hair tied back in case they caught on fire. We all had the best night. By Libby Age 7 REMEMBRANCE SUNDAY SERVICE AT BARNS GREEN VILLAGE HALL On Sunday, the Brownies and Rainbows went to the service of remembrance and we stood up at the front and read some prayers. We had a line or two each and I was very proud. I wore my glittery poppy to remember those who fought in the many wars, like my Great-Grandad. Isabella O, Aged 7 TRIP TO CERAMIC SHACK On Wednesday 11th November 2015, the Brownies went to the Ceramic Shack in Horsham where we got creative with painting pottery. We had really good fun choosing what we wanted to decorate including monkeys, parrots, pirates and Santa’s. I chose an elephant and painted it light blue with pink spots. We now have to wait until they are glazed and fired. Continued on next page‌. 18
When we had finished decorating our ceramics, we took it in turns to email the brownie group in New Zealand and answer their questions and then ask them stuff. It was really interesting finding out what it's like in Brownies on the other side of the world! We were able to discuss future Brownie nights and what we wanted to do. Thank you to Fiona and the other young leaders for such an amazing night! I would love to go there again. By Eva, aged 7. Christmas Crime Prevention Advice Sussex Police would like to offer a few tips to help you remain vigilant and reduce the chances of being affected by Christmas and New Year crime. Protect your home • Ensure doors and windows are locked at all times and remember to use your alarm if you have one. • Keys, money and phones are a burglar's dream. Keep all such items well out of sight and reach of doors, windows and letterboxes. Intruders sometimes use rods to reach bags and keys and use them to enter your home with ease. In one third of burglaries, the thief didn't have to force entry into the home. • If you like to display your Christmas tree in your window remember to keep the presents away from prying eyes. Just like anyone else, thieves like to window shop before obtaining their goods. • Make your home look occupied by using timer switches on your lights and radios so people think you are in. If you don't have them, ask your neighbours to keep an eye on your home and draw your curtains if you are away. • Dispose of packaging carefully. Empty boxes awaiting collection and bins full of packaging are a perfect advert for burglars. 22
