St Nicolas Church - Thoughts from your Vicar. In January we celebrate the Epiphany when we remember the presentation of gifts by the 3 wise men, kings, or Magi to the infant Jesus. But who are these people who have given us such a magnificent example of faith? Just looking at the map we can see that the distance from Babylon to Bethlehem is about 600 miles. Such a distance by camel must have taken many months, and that’s without any preparation, and pondering on the reason for the star appearing. Matthew is the only writer that tells us of the visit of the Magi, although he doesn’t tell how many they were, we assume the number three from the gifts. The Magi are popularly referred to as wise men and kings. They Rev. Sandra Hall were actually the priestly caste of Zoroastrianism. As part of their religion, these priests paid particular attention to the stars, and gained an international reputation for astrology, which was at that time highly regarded as a science. Their religious practices and use of astrology caused derivatives of the term Magi to be applied to the occult in general and led to the English term magic. The King James Version of the Bible names them as wise men. Their identification as kings is often linked to the Old Testament prophesies such as that in Isaiah which describe the Messiah being worshipped by kings. Traditions identify a variety of different names for the Magi. We commonly know them as Melchior, Caspar, and Balthasar, from the carol. These names are apparently derived from a Greek manuscript. But what of those strange gifts: gold, frankincense, and myrrh? There are a number of theories to their meaning and symbolism. The first is that all three of the gifts are ordinary offerings and gifts given to a king. Myrrh being commonly used as anointing oil, frankincense as a perfume, and gold as a valuable. However alternative theories give the three gifts a more spiritual meaning: gold is stated as a symbol of kingship on earth, frankincense as a symbol of priesthood, and myrrh (embalming oil) as a symbol of death. An alternative eluded to in the carol "We Three Kings", is that gold symbolises virtue, frankincense symbolises prayer and myrrh symbolises suffering. We can only marvel at the Magi’s faith and at the sight that they travelled so far to see. I pray that we may gain faith like that in the year ahead. Epiphany falls on the 6th January, but we will celebrate it on the 3rd, the nearest Sunday. Do join us for our celebration, it would be great to see you. I wish you all a happy and healthy New Year. Please do contact me if you would like a chat or a visit. Telephone: 01403 790197 or email: sandra.richard@tiscali.co.uk With love in Christ, Revd Sandra Hall 5

Barns Green & Itchingfield Neighbourhood Plan As you may be aware, Itchingfield Parish Council is developing a Neighbourhood Plan. This is a major task that will take time and money to complete but it is important that we do it in an effort to give ourselves as much protection as possible from unwanted future developments. So what is Neighbourhood Planning? Essentially it is a relatively new scheme designed to give local communities the chance to decide the future of the places where they live and work by giving them the opportunity to

• • •

Choose where they want new homes, shops and offices to be built Have their say on what those new buildings should look like Grant permission for any new buildings they want to see go ahead

Following on from the Annual Village Meeting, a steering group of 12 people has now been established consisting of 4 Parish Councillors and 8 local volunteers. They are being advised by AIRS (Action in Rural Sussex) and have been having regular meetings. Minutes from these meetings are available on the Parish council website.

There will be an opportunity for you to have your say on Saturday 6th February 2016 at 10.30-12.00noon at the Village Hall. In order to attend you will need to pre-register. Once you’ve pre-registered, please come along and tell us what you think and how you would like Barns Green and Itchingfield to develop in the future. We need your opinions and ideas and there will be a chance to join a focus group if you are interested in any particular aspect of the future of our parish. (refreshments will be provided at the meeting) You can pre register your interest in attending this meeting by logging on to our newly revamped website; www.itchingfieldparishcouncil.org.uk Click on “Contact the Clerk” and leave a message indicating your interest in attending the meeting, or contact the Parish Clerk, Jan Critchley; jan.critchley@itchpc.freeserve.co.uk (refreshments will be provided) Attendance will be limited to those who have pre-registered. 6

Vernon Jennings, BEM

December 2016 saw Vernon Jennings presented with his British Empire Medal by Mrs Susan Piper, the Lord-Lieutenant of West Sussex. Friends and colleagues joined Vernon for the investiture at Muntham House School. The award was announced in the Queen’s Honours List in June, 2015 and was for his work with the Barns Green Half Marathon and the community. Vernon has been involved with the Barns Green Half Marathon since it began in 1982, organising the funnel and acting as Race Recorder, until 1998 when he took over as Chairman of the Barns Green Half Marathon Organising Committee and has in that period also acted as Race Director. Since he has become Chairman, the race has gone from strength to strength and has raised thousands of pounds for charity and other good causes. Everybody involved in the race, the organising committee, the runners, the volunteers, the charities, the local social and sports clubs who benefit from the race owe Vernon a huge debt of thanks. Congratulations Vernon on your very well deserved honour. Article by Nigel Currie and photograph by Philip Jennings

Barns Green School Christmas Concert Carol Shepherd writes: I, along with the members of the Monday Club, W.I., Farm Close and Grandparents of children at the school were invited to a very emotional and well acted and sung story of Babushka, a Russian lady who was very house-proud, which made her unhappy and unfriendly. Until that is, she met different needy people whom she felt she could help. They were all going to see the new baby King. Her life was changed from sadness to joy, because all those she had helped were aspects of the Christ who came to give new life. As it says in the Bible, “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’ A story with a twist, but still with great meaning-peace and love came down at Christmas in the form of a baby born to be our Saviour. Thank you so much to all staff and children. 10

Merve Goddard 01403 734408 merve.goddard@btinternet.com Mary Hallett ww1@barnsgreen.com Conscription Britain, unlike its European neighbours, had no history of compulsory military service and the idea of such a thing was simply not British! But voluntary enlistment into the services was simply not high enough tosustain the war effort, and many people were annoyed at the reluctance of single men to “do their bit”. National Registration in 1915 had shown that only half of the 5 million men eligible for military service had volunteered. Desperate to avoid conscription, the Government launched a special scheme to encourage men to enlist. The basis of the scheme was that if a man volunteered he would categorised according to his marital status and occupation and only called up when all higher grouped men had already been called. The idea was to ensure that single men were enlisted before married men. Men who signed up were given an armband and certificate as proof of their commitment. This was an important feature of the scheme as the white feather campaign was gaining momentum and no man wanted to be accosted in the street and publicly handed a white feather as evidence of his perceived cowardice! The scheme met with limited success, but for several local men it enabled them to enlist and show they were willing to do their bit. For one man, Henry Knight, a married bricklayer living in Cross Lane, there was a problem. He enlisted in December 1915 but by January 1916 had still not received his armband or papers, so he wrote to the Recruiting office querying why he had not been contacted and by February Henry had received his armlet to wear pending his actual call up (which arrived in June 1916.)

Henry Knight’s letter to the military (Image courtesy of TNA).

While Henry Knight was receiving his certificate and armband, his neighbour Henry Bennett received his call up. As a 23 year old single man Henry Bennett was called up just one month after he enlisted. In March 1916 compulsory military service was introduced. For local families who still had single men of military age at home they now knew that it was certain they would be called up to serve, whether they wanted to or not. 11

1ST BARNS GREEN AND ITCHINGFIELD RAINBOWS AND BROWNIES Christmas crafts; an evening of chatting, sitting on camp blankets and creating beautiful Christmas wreaths. We were lucky enough to have a few extra pairs of hands from some parents, and the girls all managed to produce lovely decorations to go home. Rainbows, Brownies and Guides received their pottery painting back and have been proudly displaying it. Rainbows finished the term by passing another badge.

CHRISTMAS WREATHS

POTTERY PANTING

We had a fantastic trip to see Jack and the Beanstalk at The Hawth with the District units was a noisy and funny event. We took a group of 32 to see the panto, and the girls joined in with enthusiasm, plenty of audience participation, dancing and singing. A good warm up for our planned trip in January to Not Quite the Three Musketeers, being put on by the BG Players. The Brownies have linked up with a unit in New Zealand and are starting to get to know them by sending emails, photographs and pictures. All the girls made a Christmas card for one of the brownies in New Zealand. They have been lucky enough to receive cards in return, covered in glitter!

GUIDES AT THE CHRSITMAS PARTY

DESTINATION NEW ZEALAND

The Christmas party was a great hit, and we have to say a massive thank you to Miranda Mitchell from Stress Free Parties for giving her time for free to put on parties for the Rainbows followed by the Brownies. Lots of games, a bit of dancing ensured the girls had a fantastic night. The evening was topped off with a party tea, crackers and cake decorating. Where did the autumn term go? The Brownies have a challenge starting 13/1/16, to get all 32 girls to knit! If you are a knitter, and could spare an hour on Wednesday night in January or first week in February please get in touch. We need all the help we can get, please ring Fiona 738806. 12

Barns Green Half Marathon: news

Photograph by Ian McBean Photography

From left to right: Pauline Muncer, Kenney Jones, Alan Lambkin, Brian Muncer, Paul Toms and Vernon Jennings (Chairman & Race Director)

26 November saw the Barns Green Half Marathon Committee pass a cheque for £3,500 to Kenney Jones. Kenney, who is an Ambassador for Prostate Cancer UK kindly started the 2015 Half Marathon, is the owner of Hurtwood Polo Club near Ewhurst in Surrey. His first group was the Outcasts and subsequently played with the Small Faces, The Faces and The Who. Kenney was diagnosed with Prostate Cancer in 2013 following a routine health check and has been urging men to get tested for the disease by having a simple PSA blood test. The money donated was achieved by on-line donations from race entries, donations from individuals, bucket collections on Race Day organised by Brian and Pauline Muncer and money donated by the Barns Green Half Marathon fund. The organisation for the 2016 Race is already under way with the date for this year’s race being Sunday, 25 January, starting at 10:00am. The Charity of choice for 2016 will be St Catherine’s Hospice.

BIG Mag front page story...

QUEEN’S HEAD TURNED Village pub under new management for 2016. Now that we’re into 2016 it’s not just the year that’s changed. The village pub has been changing, slowly, too. The Queen’s Head is under new management and they want to welcome everyone. You won’t notice too many changes at first; they’ll still hold quiz nights, music and rugby club events. The new manager, David Cunliffe, told the BIG Mag “We’re the heart of Barns Green; part of the village. We want to reassure our regular customers that we’re not going to change everything at once, but we also want to encourage new customers to join us”. David and his chef have introduced a new menu. The BIG Mag team wish them every success in 2016.
