STOP TRAFFIC SPEEDING THROUGH VILLAGE !

It seems that some roads in the village have become more dangerous because cars are being driven too fast. The recent installation of "Traffic Gates" at entrance points to the village is the first of several anti-speeding measures to be introduced: traffic surveys will be carried out over the next few weeks. Have you experienced a problem with drivers speeding through the village? How do you think this should be tackled? 1ST BARNS GREEN AND ITCHINGFIELD RAINBOWS AND BROWNIES Happy New Year from everyone at Rainbows, Brownies and Guides. Our year ended with three great Christmas parties. The Guides went off to Horsham and enjoyed a good night at Smith and Western. Plenty of fun, good food, gossip and crackers jokes! Rainbows enjoyed various crafts, plenty of glitter, party tea with crackers, and a few Christmas games. Our Brownies also made plenty of Christmas crafts to take home and thoroughly enjoyed a game of indoor snowballs. We were also able to enroll our new Brownies, who did particularly well in front of a larger audience of parents munching mince pies, and a enjoying a bit of Brownies Christmas singing. Reflecting on the last 12 months, the girls have had many opportunities to experience new adventures; ranging from baking, canoeing, swimming, knitting, pottery painting, reindeer run, Remembrance service, bell ringing to name a few. Perhaps more importantly, has been the chance to develop their skills and grow in confidence. As a Leader, it is fantastic to witness and be part of the journey - watching the girls grow and develop in so many different ways. Some of the children join our units very shy or not knowing anyone – a daunting experience, regardless of age. To see them being included, making new friends, become a team player and then have the confidence to lead other girls within activities. Girls, from as young as 5, stood in front of a large congregation reading prayers. Many helped at the Half Marathon, working hard, cheering on runners and congratulating finishers; a great show of confidence and starting to understand about helping others and joining in community events. The next 12 months should continue to add to their growth, experiences and abilities. My time at Brownies I had lots of fun at Brownies. One of my favourite things was going to Horsham to do pottery painting. Brownies has been life changing for me. I have made lots of new friends and will miss them all. We have done lots of cool things like sleepovers, Amberley museum, pets at home, the seaside and lots more beside all that. Although a little nervous, I am looking forward to my new journey at Guides. I would like to thank my leaders for helping me throughout Brownies and hope to see them in the future. Millie Age 10. For Rainbows, please register as early as possible. There is no obligation to take a place when it comes up. It is much easier to obtain a place, the earlier you register.

To volunteer or register your daughter’s interest visit www.girlguiding.org.uk/joinus. For more details please ring Fiona 738806. 5

St Nicolas Church - Thoughts from your Vicar.

New Year First of all, a Happy New Year to you all, may God bless you in 2017. While the start of the liturgical calendar is the first Sunday of Advent, January 1 remains a popular global holiday for celebrating the New Year. (It has Christian origins too, since the Gregorian calendar was introduced by Pope Gregory XIII in 1582).

Rev. Sandra Hall

Many thoughts go through one's head at this time of year. Reflections on the past, prospects for the future and even things that we could have done better, we resolve to do at the outset of 2017. Our Scriptures are full of exhortations to renewal – of our minds, and hearts and our relationship to God and to each other. ‘Behold, I make all things new’; ‘a new heaven and a new earth’; ‘put off the old self…and put on the new’. While it might seem ironic to say it, when it takes so long in the Church to change anything, change is the normal state for Christians. We know we’ve not arrived at the full maturity of Christ towards which we strive, and that we are always and only in the process of becoming what God would have us be. The fundamental spiritual truth for Christians is: change is all there is. So when you’re pumping iron, or running marathons, or scrambling across the downs on your mountain bike (or none of the above in my case…) remember that our new beginnings are not only about fitness of body, or even only about fitness of body and mind: our spiritual health and fitness needs attending to as well.

With that in mind, there is one thing we can do, one thing that will make a difference to everything else we do; remember the verse from Deuteronomy 6:5 " ...love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength". Jesus said similar words in Matthew 22, but he added “and love your neighbour as you love yourself." If we colour everything we do with love as those words suggest, we will surely make a difference this year. I am going to try this year, will you join me by recalling those words as often as you can? May you receive peace, health and prosperity from the Lord this year out of His love for you. With love in Christ, Revd Sandra Hall

LOCAL SPORTS NEWS Contact our Sports Editor, Barry Hearnshaw by email: sports@barnsgreen.com SPORTING OBITUARY:ANTHONY CHARLES DUMBRILL Tony Dumbrill, “Dumbers” to his many friends, was a keen village sportsman from the moment he could kick a football, lift a cricket bat or strike a golf ball. He was highly regarded in West Sussex, which was evident at his funeral when 300 plus attend to pay their respects. Among the many tributes was one which read: “One of life’s true gentlemen who always had time for people. Memories last forever and the ones I have I will cherish mate. The world became a worse place after hearing the news”. Tony started representing his home village in the early 60s and later in 1964, Barns Green when he met Sue his wife. A talented footballer and cricketer who encouraged many individuals to participate in their chosen sport. He led by example and motivated both Barns Green teams to win many “Trophies” over the 30 plus years he represented the teams in the village. He captained both cricket and football teams, played on the wing for the football team and was an all-rounder for the cricket team. In 2000 he was voted Barns Greens footballer of the 20th century. He was proud to later play with his son Jay and watch his Grandson Ben play for the village. Born in Fernhurst in Hampshire and trained as an electrical engineer working for BT for over 25 years. He will be very sadly missed by his wife Sue, sons Lee and Jay and grandchildren Ben, Josh and Macie. Born January 1945. Died November 2016 DARTS BARNS GREEN GO TOP OF DIVISION ONE Barns Green recently visited the King's Arms which produced a 4 -4 league draw. The first round of the cup competition brought the strong Rising Sun side to the Green. The Sun were too strong for the Green who went down 5 -2. Returning to the league action, Southwater were the next visitors. This produced a stunning 7 - 1 victory (Kev Bance 141 outshot and a 180 for the Green) and sent the Green top of Division One having played one more match than rivals The Rising Sun. Another visit to Billingshurst, this time to play the King's Head, brought another victory this time 6 -2 and an excellent evening all round for the Green. Of note were two ton plus finishes for Ron Clarke (114 and 115) and a 107 for J. Coxon. 8

Barns Green Half Marathon and 10k choose St Catherine’s Hospice St Catherine’s Hospice is again to be the official charity for the Barns Green Half Marathon & 10k. The 2017 event will take place on Sunday 24th September and it will be the 35th running of the Barns Green Half Marathon and the second year of the new 10 kilometer race which was introduced for the first time this year. The Barns Green Half Marathon Committee developed a very good relationship with St Catherine’s Hospice and decided unanimously to support this outstanding local charity. St Catherine’s Hospice is dedicated to providing expert end of life care and support to local people, their families, friends and carers. For over 30 years it has been providing high quality hospice care, free of charge, to people living in Crawley, Horsham, Mid Sussex and East Surrey. BARNS GREEN & ITCHINGFIELD W.I. Our speaker in November was Doug Easton who gave an interesting and amusing illustrated talk on life in Victorian times. He explained how major events affected the population, of the many inventions, both curious and useful and he described how fashions changed, people entertained themselves and of the growing consumerism. In December 13 of us had a delicious Christmas lunch at Random Hall, the food, service and company all being excellent! Our next meeting will be at Sandra Morfey’s house where we will be reading a selection of prose and poetry. Our meetings take place on the 3rd Thursday each month at 2.30pm and are in the village hall unless otherwise indicated. Visitors will be made very welcome. Miriam Coghill 10

ITCHINGFIELD TOWER CONTRIBUTES TO MAMMOTH FUNDRAISING EVENT One November afternoon you may have heard the bells at Itchingfield being rung for 45 minutes. The ring was to raise money for the Anthony Nolan Trust and Blood Wise and this particular campaign, Fight Back Against Blood Cancer, was started by Julie McDonnell, (from East Sussex), a serving soldier in the Blues and Royals who was diagnosed with leukaemia in June 2015. Whilst being treated with a bone marrow transplant she discovered that all second stem cell transplants in England had been suspended because of lack of funding. Julie decided to raise money so that all children needing a second transplant (all children with leukaemia do) would get one. She began raising money through bell ringing by getting corporate sponsorship, having been given a target to ring 100 quarter peals (this lasts approximately 45 minutes) for £10.000 by Christmas 2016. This target was reached fairly quickly and so the bar was raised to 260 rings for even more money. In all Julie has now raised 2.8 million pounds which now pays for every child in England with leukaemia to have the Julie McDonell ringing the second bone marrow transplant when they need it. She bells at Bexhill herself has been told her cancer is terminal and was refused a 3rd bone marrow transplant. The army will fund a 3rd one for her. Although she had a full blood transfusion only 2 days earlier she was ringing at 4 different towers the day I met her at Itchingfield. The ring there raised an amazing £9000. She is an incredible woman, brave and thoughtful for others and she has been nominated for a Hero’s Reward at the ceremony which takes place in London on the day of writing this.

Shorthand is most definitely not needed, but if you have it you might find it useful. The retiring Secretary will be pleased to help the new Secretary in whichever way they need. The Committee is a largely autonomous sub-committee of the Village Trust. We are all volunteers and meet between 8 and 10 times a year to discuss issues involving the hall, its maintenance and its use. News from the Parish Council

CONCERN EXPRESSED AT TRAFFIC SPEEDING THROUGH VILLAGE. The Parish Council has been very concerned at the level of anti social driving and speeding in and around Barns Green and know this is shared by the majority of residents. The recent installation of the "Traffic Gates" was only the first in a number of things we are looking at to address this problem. Four traffic surveys have been commissioned, and these will be located at various locations around the village. They will provide important information which will include the speed of vehicles. It is hoped they will be in place in January or February 2017 and will run for seven days. The Parish Council will then be provided with the results. This is such an important issue that the Parish Council has appointed a small sub committee who will see what further measures can be taken. This will be their sole responsibility, and input from residents with their suggestions will be sought. Further information will follow shortly Penny Simpson, Itchingfield Parish Council ——————————————————— Itchingfield Parish Council – Neighbourhood Plan Itchingfield Parish Council is now well advanced with its Neighbourhood Plan. Last year a Neighbourhood Plan Steering Group was set up under the Chairmanship of Ian Walker. Neighbourhood Plans is a relatively new concept designed to give local communities the chance to decide where they would like new homes, shops and offices to be built, have their say on what those new buildings should look like and grant permission for any new buildings they want to see go ahead. It is a government initiative set up under the Provisions of the Localism Act 2012. Since the establishment of the Steering Group, the members have been working extremely hard in different groups tackling specific issues and as a collective to establish the best possible set of recommendations, ideas and potential outcomes for the Itchingfield parish which includes the village of Barns Green. Last July a household survey was conducted with the help of Action in Rural Sussex (AiRs) which aimed to address a wide variety of issues and concerns among residents. There was an extremely encouraging 41% response and the responses were analysed and assessed and these have provided invaluable information and insight for the Steering Group going forward. This was followed up with another public meeting held at the Village Hall in late October when details on the feedback from the survey were revealed and discussed. 12

Again this was very well supported with over a hundred people in attendance and plenty of constructive input and debate on a wide number of issues. The Steering Group has now issued a “Call for Sites” in which interested parties are asked to put forward any land that they wish to be considered for housing, business and recreational use along with any community benefits which these sites could provide. Chairman of Itchingfield Parish Council, Penny Simpson commented, “I am delighted with the progress that we have made with our Neighbourhood Plan. Ian Walker and his team have done an outstanding job and the response and interest from the residents has shown just how important planning issues are particularly in a small community like ours”. For further information or if you wish your site to be considered as part of the neighbourhood planning process then please contact the Clerk to the Itchingfield Parish Council: by email to jancritchley@itchpc.freeserve.co.uk or by letter to The Parish Clerk, Itchingfield Parish Neighbourhood Plan, c/o 14 Trout Lane, Barns Green, West Sussex RH13 0QD

IMPORTANT NOTICE FROM MUNTHAM HOUSE SCHOOL A very important issue has been raised by Health and Safety Officers and West Sussex County Council with regard to dogs fouling on the school grounds. There have been further concerns about large dogs running around on school grounds, frightening children and staff.

Whilst Muntham House School tries to be as good a neighbour as possible, we must insist that all dogs are kept on a leash and on designated footpaths around the school grounds.

Merve Goddard 01403 734408 merve.goddard@btinternet.com Mary Hallett ww1@barnsgreen.com

The war was all consuming, and even small villages like Barns Green were being subsumed by the ever growing controls and requirements brought about by the need to sustain the war effort. The residents of Itchingfield parish continued with a multitude of fundraising efforts, which were utterly unrelenting in their call on the purses, efforts and time of the population. Even children were involved and some, like the Pilbeam brothers, gave their own possessions, sending their mouth organs to the Navy. When they received a letter of thanks from the Ship that had received their gifts, their kindness was reported in the Itchingfield Parish Magazine……. We print the following two letters. Perhaps other children could do something in the same way to show that we do not forget our sailors who are guarding our shores. Toat Hill, Slinfold, July 16th 1916 Dear Admiral Jellicoe - My little brother Cecil, aged 7, and myself, aged 8 ½ , are sending you two mouth organs for the sailors to help to cheer them ; they are not quite new, but our mother thought the sailors would like to have them as we have two cousins in the Navy, but we do not know which ships they are on. Please will you let us know if you get them safe? With love to you and all the dear sailors. We are your loving little friends. Arthur Henry and Cecil Ernest Pilbeam. (Now living at Barns Green)

H.M.S. Iron Duke, 20th July 1916 I am directed by the Admiral Sir John Jellicoe, Commander-in-Chief, Grand Fleet, to acknowledge the receipt of and to thank you for your kind gifts of mouth organs which is greatly appreciated, and has been distributed amongst the men of H.M.S. Iron Duke, who are most grateful for your kind thought. Sydney Searle, Fleet Distribution Officer.

BARNS GREEN ‘GREEN FINGERS’ Our page for local gardening enthusiasts. Our gardening reporter is Barry Hearnshaw. ————————— GARDEN OF THE MONTH Chartwell Garden is Sir Winston Churchill's garden, it has a fine site and a calm dignified air. The style is Arts and Crafts, with a grass terrace in front of the house, a walled garden to one side and an 'informal' area on the other. It was designed by Sir Winston and Lady Churchill, with the Malborough Pavilion designed by Philip Tilden. Sir Winston built the garden walls and a summerhouse himself. He had lakes built and had to live elsewhere during the 2nd World War because Chartwell in Kent was visible and easily identified by German bombers. Chartwell was indeed bombed during the war.

Sir Winston Churchill admiring his swimming pool.

Churchill’s second attempt at a swimming pool is now a haven for wildlife.

The Rock garden is a particular highlight, the feature caught Lady Churchill's eye at the Chelsea Flower Show in 1948. She liked it so much the designer Gavin Jones gave it to her as a gift and she only paid for the transport. The design is a semicircular wall comprising massive lumps of Forest of Dean sandstone with the stream cascading over the rock face and into a pool below to represent a natural stone outcrop. Cascading down from the rock garden to find Churchill's swimming pool. In the early years, the Churchills used the lakes for swimming until the oval concrete pool was constructed in the 1930s. With his usual thoroughness, Churchill took the advice from his scientist friend, Lindemann, on the amount of water needed to fill it and from a chemist on the correct chemicals to keep it clean. One of the benefits of visiting Chartwell is dogs are welcome. Chartwell loves dogs Take your furry companion along and stroll around the garden and woods. Enjoy your visit. 16
