BIG Mag Editorial column. This is our Summer edition of the BIG Mag. We do not publish an August edition.

NEW EDITOR FOR THE BIG Mag. The Trustees of the BIG Mag would like to thank Roger Stamp for all his hard work as Editor of the magazine over the past four and a half years. Roger is stepping down to concentrate on his work with the BBC; so this is his last edition. Roger joined the BIG Mag team as a Trustee when it was set up by Mary and Paul Hallett over 10 years ago. He was also the Distributor for Itchingfield for six years. The Trustees are pleased to announce the appointment of a new Editor, Abi Cooke. Abi lives in Barns Green and has just completed a BA Hons Advertising and Marketing Communications degree at the University of Greenwich. The Trustees are looking to issue a re-vamp of the BIG Mag in the September issue, something which Abi is keen to embrace. Please welcome Abbi to the BIG Mag team and I am sure that you will give her your full support in her new role in submitting articles and advertisements. Abi’s e-mail address will be bigmag@barnsgreen.com Guidelines for submitting articles to the BIG Mag. WHAT A LOAD OF RUBBISH (News from the other side of The Green bin!) We are a few months into the job and now realise what we have let ourselves in for. Hopefully you may have noticed some improvement around the Parish. A needless but not thankless task. Your kind words of encouragement and appreciation en-route and at the recent Village Meeting reflect this. The annual village litter pick was mentioned at the meeting but the Parish Council and ourselves do not think this is necessary. We feel that we have got on top of the job by endeavouring to clear the village centre as best we can every week and the approaches at least once a month. However if you feel that there are specific areas that require attention let the Parish Council know and we will see what we can do. Sadly once your back is turned more litter appears but regular picking seems to have helped. Perhaps there is some truth in the old saying that Rubbish breeds Rubbish! A few more sayings and proverbs that have occurred to us on our way around…. A rolling stone gathers no moss, only dog mess and wipes. All that glitters is not gold, it’s another drinks can. Every cloud has a silver lining and so do bags of crisps. Red sky at night, fly tippers delight. Red sky in the morning, the councils warning. Money doesn’t grow on trees, just bags of dog poo. What goes up must end up in the road. A bird in hand is worth a number of things in the bush! A little of what you fancy does you good but don’t leave the packaging in the car park.

Pat & Pete, Parish Litter Wardens.

St. Nicolas Church - Thoughts from the Vicar. The Vicar Revd Sandra Hall writes: What is an eternal instant? I read this recently in Max Lucado’s ‘God Came Near’ and thought it was worth sharing: ‘An instant in time that has no time. A picture frozen in midframe, demanding to be savoured. A minute that refuses to die in sixty seconds. A moment that is lifted off the timeline and amplified into a forever so all the angels could witness its majesty.

Revd Sandra Hall

A moment that reminds you of the treasures surrounding you. Your home. Your peace of mind. Your health. A moment that tenderly rebukes you for spending so much time on temporal preoccupations such as savings accounts, houses, and punctuality. A moment that can bring a mist to the manliest of eyes and perspective to the darkest life. Eternal instants. You’ve had them. We all have them. Sharing a porch swing on a summer evening with your grandchild. Seeing her face in the glow of a candle. Putting your arm into your husband’s as you stroll through the golden leaves and breathe the brisk autumn air. Listening to your six-year-old thank God for everything from goldfish to Grandma. Such moments are necessary because they remind us that everything is okay. The King is still on the throne and life is still worth living. Eternal instants remind us that love is still the greatest possession and the future is nothing to fear. The next time an instant in your life begins to be eternal, let it. Put your head back on the pillow and soak it in. Resist the urge to cut it short. Don’t interrupt the silence or Shatter the solemnity. You are, in a very special way, on holy ground.’ May our experience of ‘eternal instants’ bring us closer to God, our creator and sustainer that we may know ourselves to be loved, forgiven and cherished. Our Lord Jesus Christ said: ‘Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. 29Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.’ I would like to invite you to ‘come to Jesus’ on a ‘Quiet Day’ on Saturday 5th August at Gossops Green Convent. An opportunity to take time out of your busy life to rest with our Lord. May the peace of the Lord be with you. Revd Sandra 9

Itchingfield and Barns Green Emergency plan The Parish council is in the process of up-dating its Emergency Plan and hope that anyone living within the Parish might be willing to assist in case of an emergency of any kind. If you have kindly volunteered your services in the past, please kindly do contact us again so we can update our records with your details. The purpose of the plan is to provide a self-help guide to the resources available within the community, To support it in a crisis and the particular procedures to be followed for a specific crisis. This is especially important if the emergency services or relevant local authority support is delayed due to the scale and nature of the emergency. By becoming more resilient, the community can compliment the work of the local emergency services and reduce the impact of an emergency on the community. It is hoped that in doing this, the community will be better prepared to coordinate any community response with the emergency services. As a local resident you may have equipment available that could be utilised in the case of an emergency such as a 4x4 vehicle, chain saw, ladder, water pump, portable generator etc. The other way you can assist is if you have specific skills, i.e. doctor, nurse, police officer, first aider, tree surgeon, mechanic, electrician, plumber or good at hill walking in poor weather and can join a search party. If you are willing to assist in any way it would be very much appreciated if you could kindly let the Parish Council have the following information by email to: emergency@itchingfieldparishcouncil.gov.uk Name….., Address…, Landline Tel no …… Mobile no …., Skills…, List of equipment kept locally…… Kind regards, Itchingfield and Barns Green Parish Council 10

Day in the life of

St Nicolas Table Top Shop Collecting, unpacking, cleaning, researching, Sorting, pricing, presenting and labelling … stop for coffee ... Place into boxes for different venues… Priest’s house at church or special events throughout the year Some specialist items or larger furniture to auction Some specialist items on ebay and local papers … waiting, Hoping, anticipation & if lucky … selling, wrapping and posting.

Sale day … Unpacking at destination, presenting and selling. Repacking after event, some relabeling and reboxing for another day. Eventually some items to local charity shops. Hard work, so very interesting, so much to learn, so much recycling. Such generosity throughout the community … tens of thousands of items donated over the last six years. Such a lovely way to meet people, fund important projects for our church and create a constructive outcome from unwanted articles. We thank our team of loyal and happy magic elves who kindly beaver away doing all the tasks that keep our little ‘shop’ running smoothly; making it look effortless of course.

A profit of £1047.00 was made at the recent Floral Fringe Fair at Knepp Castle. We’d be happy to look at any items – old or new, large or small, that you wish to donate. £26,750 made so far. Many thanks to everyone. Mags Fisher – St Nicolas Fund Raising Committee. 01403 790717 magsfisher@btinternet.com

Merve Goddard 01403 734408 merve.goddard@btinternet.com Mary Hallett ww1@barnsgreen.com As more and more men were sucked into the unending war, women were increasingly called on to take on paid employment. In 1917 Christ’s Hospital school advertised locally for women to take on jobs previously done by men “respectable women for cleaning rooms etc, to replace men. About 51 hours per week – Apply to the STEWARD, Christ’s Hospital, Horsham.” March 1917 and in a move which was very bold even for 1917, Gwen Upcott was recalled from her war work in London to become a Housemistress . . .my father told me that a proposal had been made to him, that, until the end of the war, women should assist in the preparatory part of the school and it was suggested that one of the two women required, should be myself. . . Gwen Upcott For younger girls the war was also providing more opportunities for activities outside the home with the now flourishing Girl Guide movement; GIRL GUIDES – The Itchingfield Company of Girl Guides has today reached its second birthday, and is happy and flourishing. There are now 14 members and it is hoped that there will soon be some more, now that everyone can see that the guides are not trying to imitate boys, but have plenty of ideas of their own! ITCHINGFIELD PARISH MAGAZINE. Life was changing for many people in ways which had been unthinkable just 3 short years ago, but what was not changing was the unrelenting tragedy of war. At the end of July 1917, the Sprackling family received news that Percy Sprackling had been killed in action. Mrs Sprackling has received the following letter about her son, killed in action. Our sincere sympathy is with her and her family:In the field, 25/7/17. Dear Mrs Sprackling - I expect by now that you have been informed of the death of your son, one of the men of this battalion. His Company Commander has probably given you full particulars as to how he was killed inaction, so all I can do is to say that he was buried by the Senior Chaplain of this Division in the presence of many of his comrades. He is buried in a well kept British cemetery behind the line, the place being carefully registered, and the grave marked with a cross, and the particulars are now with the Graves Registration Unit, War Office, London, in case you wish to know the exact spot, which, of course, I am not allowed to tell you by letter. The funeral was very simple and well arranged, and an armed guard was present, the buglers sounded the “Last Post” over the grave as a tribute of respect from the battalion. May God comfort you in your own personal sorrow, and make you feel that your boy did his duty in a simple and noble fashion, and that he was not afraid to die when the call came. Believe me, yours truly, (Rev) M Spinney C.F., Attached --the East Surrey Regt. In a few short months six local families were mourning lost sons, fathers and brothers, and the year was only just half over. 14

BARNS GREEN ‘GREEN FINGERS’ Our page for local gardening enthusiasts. Our gardening reporter is Barry Hearnshaw. ————————— RHS CHATSWORTH FLOWER SHOW Chatsworth House, home to the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire, has been passed down through 16 generations of the Cavendish family. It is a family home, a working farm and a living landscape. Set in the heart of the Peak District, on the banks of the river Derwent, the gardens are famous for their rich history, historic and modern waterworks and sculptures. Design revolutionaries including ‘Capability’ Brown and Joseph Paxton played a pivotal role in shaping the gardens as they are today. Now RHS have held their inaugural northern Flower Show in this living landscape designed by ‘Capability’ Brown. What was impressive, was the garden designers used Chatsworth impressive landscape as the back drop to their gardens. The show is like other RHS shows, it had a Feature Garden, Show Gardens and Freeform Gardens, a floral Marquee and other usual show features. The Brewin Dolphin Garden Delightful naturalistic planted garden featuring drifts of a diverse range of perennials, set within serpentine beds below specimen trees of field maple and hornbeam. Embracing the majestic setting of Chatsworth House, the garden maximised the beautiful views and natural curves of the landscape and provided a spectacular contemporary viewpoint from which to enjoy 'Capability' Brown’s historic vistas.

Sited on the banks of the River Derwent, the scale of the garden reflected the grandeur of its setting combining contemporary industrial materials with naturalistic 15

planting. Central to the design is an imposing contemporary sculpture crafted from reinforcing steel bars that sweep through the space, taking in the shape of the river before cantilevering dramatically out over the water. It not only used the landscape as a backdrop but incorporated the features into the gardens. Very impressive. Here, it hung suspended in mid-air before sweeping back to the riverbank and spiralling into a circular enclosed building. A series of garden areas dotted along the sculpture’s main frame are connected by wildflower turf following the organic shape of the structure. At one end, majestic field maples and hornbeams create a glade of trees surrounded by meadow. At the other, an ornamental garden curves around the imposing steel building. A soft pastel planting palette of blues and pinks with highlights of apricot contrast with the patina of the steel sculpture. Elsewhere, paving and sculptural seating reference the millstones found across the Peak District. Editors Favourite Garden Plant of the Month Variegated Berberis (coloured Berberis- Barberry) A very underrated plant for garden interest and garden borders. There are five coloured Berberis, which will give interest within the garden border. They are B. thunbergii 'Harlequin', 'Pink Queen', 'Rose Glow', 'Starburst' and 'Rosy Rocket'.

Flowers are insignificant, but will occur intermittently on second year wood. To encourage and maintain colour throughout the growing season, and subsequent years, pruning is done in early Spring i.e. February, preferably as hard as reasonably possible. This will encourage a proliferation of juvenile shoots, giving early Summer and Autumn interest. Growth ranges from 4ft(1.2m) and spread 4ft(1.2m), for mature plants. 'Rosy Rocket' is the exception, having a more columnar, upright habit. Report by Mark Pearce – Your Local Nurseryman July Summer is progressing getting hotter. This is often one of the hottest months of the year and a great time to sit out and enjoy your garden. Keep plants looking good by regularly dead-heading, and you'll enjoy a longer display of blooms. Make sure you keep new plants well-watered, using grey water where possible, and hoe off weeds, which thrive in the sunshine.

BARNS GREEN & ITCHINGFIELD W.I. In May we had our Resolutions and Programme Planning meeting. 85 resolutions were originally submitted nationally and these were narrowed down to six by representatives from federations in London last September. These were narrowed down to two and are, ‘Alleviating Loneliness’ and ‘Plastic Soup: keep microplastic fibres out of our oceans’. After discussion we decided to back the ‘Plastic Soup’ resolution and this will now go forward for further debate and voting at the W.I. Annual Meeting in Liverpool in June. Several ideas were put forward for our programme for next year and these will be further discussed and decided upon by the committee. We will have different speakers and a few outings to vary our programme. On July 20th our speaker will be from AGE UK. Visitors will be most welcome at the village hall, 2.30pm. Miriam Coghill 20
