OFSTED Inspector highlights areas where there is room for improvement at Barns Green Primary School “Though pupils benefit from a rich curriculum, BGPS is not judged ‘Outstanding’.

Barns Green Primary School (BGPS) has maintained its rating as a ‘Good’ school in its latest inspection by Ofsted. The one-day inspection, judged on the latest, upgraded Ofsted criteria, took place on March 14th and was the first since the two sites of Itchingfield Primary School combined locations in 2015. It targeted four areas, Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), pupil achievement at Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 and Safeguarding. The Inspector stated that Safeguarding was effective. It makes clear that pupils feel safe, really enjoy school and are proud of their impressive new building. Older pupils told the Inspector how much they liked working together with younger pupils, helping them at playtime. Though pupils benefit from a rich curriculum, BGPS is not judged ‘Outstanding’. The report highlighted areas of improvement; firstly the outside area in EYFS requires further development to better support learning, secondly the effective teaching evident in key stage 2 needs sharing across the school and thirdly the school’s successes should be better communicated and celebrated with parents. These enhancements will be added to the school improvement plan, prioritised in a seriatim and communicated to governors and parents. The OFSTED inspector made particular praise of the pupils’ behaviour, attitude to learning and mutual respect. To all the children of BGPS, the school is very proud of you and your continued success.

You can read the full OFSTED report online at www.reports.ofsted.gov.uk Information supplied to the BIG Mag by Peter Bird, Vice-Chair of the Governing Body. 5

St. Nicolas Church - Thoughts from the Vicar. Rosemary, our Associate Priest writes: How time flies; by the time you read this I will have been with you for six months. I am very happy here and you have made me so welcome. I am looking forward to the ‘Getting to Know You’ bring and share lunch at Barns Green Village Hall on 28th May (11.00am – 2.00pm). If as is sometimes said, it ‘does what it says on the tin’, I should go home knowing more of you! During the vacancy before Revd Sandra arrived, I came to the benefice to lead Holy Communion services, mostly early on Revd Rosemary Sunday mornings as well as a couple of funerals, but I could never have known this was to become ‘home’. Like many people I find change difficult, even when I can see it is for my own good, but the Bible is full of references to the Holy Spirit, empowering, moving and guiding people – sometimes hesitant and anxious people!

On Sunday 4th June, fifty days after Easter, our churches of Itchingfield and Slinfold will be celebrating the major festival of Pentecost. This follows ten days after Ascension Day, when we commemorate Jesus Christ’s bodily ascent into heaven. Pentecost celebrates the descent – the pouring out of the promised Holy Spirit from heaven onto Jesus’ disciples who were gathered together in Jerusalem as he had instructed. The experience was powerful; a sensation like a whirling wind filled the house and like a wildfire, the Holy Spirit spread amongst them, empowering them with the knowledge, enthusiasm and confidence to be sent out into the world proclaiming the message of the Lord’s love by word and deed. The Holy Spirit comes to us too, moving in us unseen but felt, both comforting and challenging. From Ascension Day to Pentecost Christians everywhere will be joining in a prayer initiative called ‘Thy Kingdom Come’. We will be praying with the whole family of God the Father for the empowering of God the Holy Spirit that we may be effective witnesses to God the Son Jesus Christ. In prayer God takes hold of our lives and works in and through us in ways we can sometimes barely imagine possible. That should fire us up nicely not only for Pentecost but also for Trinity Sunday on 11th June. Do come to our benefice special service ‘Trinity Reflections’ at 6.00pm at St Nicolas’. God is one and God is three – Father, Son and Holy Spirit – God the Holy Trinity. With love in Christ, Revd Rosemary 9

4-2 BARNS GREEN WIN THE MATCH

Winning the Chichester Charity Cup and coming equal 2nd in West Sussex Division 2 North capped of a very successful season. Report by Ben Paske

Darts April saw the Friday night darts team involved in a crucial semi-final against The Kings Arms held at neutral venue Broadbridge Heath Social Club. With a full squad, available The Green racked up a stunning 8 -1 win and booked a ticket into May's prestigious Victory Cup Final. They will play Division One title hunters The Railway again at Broadbridge Heath. The Monday night side signed off their league season with Finals Night held at Southwater Social club. The team competed in the Fives final against Division one champions and arch rivals the Rising Sun. The Green emerged victorious in a nail biting contest to take the Trophy. This was the first of three trophies The Green picked up including the Mickey Edwards Plate Trophy for the second year running, and the Division One runner's up Trophy at first attempt in Division One. This comes on the back of promotion to Division One last year as Division Two champions, last year's Mickey Edwards Plate success and the Division Two Doubles title courtesy of the two Jason's. Barns Green have held the Division One Cup Final at the Village Club for the last four years. Report by John Coxen Cricket The season has already started, with matches being played at all levels from Junior to Senior Level. The club needs to be commended for its lead it gives to the development of cricket at all levels and to those who give their time in that process. Every evening, teams can be seen being coached at all levels. Well done Barns Green Cricket Club . 12

Merve Goddard 01403 734408 merve.goddard@btinternet.com Mary Hallett ww1@barnsgreen.com A Stone for Henry Bennett: May 2017 As previously reported, the Commonwealth War Graves Commission installed a commemorative headstone for Henry Bennett in the churchyard of Holy Innocents, Southwater on the 29th September 2016. Not wishing to risk the vagaries of the winter weather it was agreed to postpone the official dedication of the stone until this spring and this duly took place last month, on the 7th May. In a service led by the Bishop of Horsham, and attended by current and former members of the Royal Sussex Regiment, local uniformed groups, local civic dignitaries and members of the extended Bennett family, the stone was dedicated and Henry given his long “thank you” for his sacrifice in the Great War. Prayers for the lost and reminders of the sacrifices made in both wars were woven into the preceding service and then, at the graveside, standards were lowered in tribute and The Last Post was sounded by a lone bugler. An old soldier of the Royal Sussex Regiment spoke the words of the poet Robert Laurence Binion – “They shall not grow old as we that are left grow old….”, and the congregation stood in a two minute silence. Reveille then sounded and the same old soldier then spoke these words, paraphrasing those credited to the poet John Maxwell Edmonds and etched on the wall of the Kahima War Cemetery, India. “When you go home, tell them of us and say “For your tomorrows these gave their today”

BARNS GREEN ‘GREEN FINGERS’ Our page for local gardening enthusiasts. Our gardening reporter is Barry Hearnshaw. ————————— 50 YEARS OF GARDENERS WORLD 2017 is a very special year.

The BBC celebrates 50 years of BBC2's Gardeners' World at Gardeners World Live at the NEC. It will be bringing out the bunting and celebrating in style with presenters past and present, Gardeners' World themed Beautiful Borders, Nostalgia Garden set in the '60s, a feature garden showing how gardening has changed over the past five decades and more. It’s even got an exclusive birthday cake recipe - so consider a visit between June 15 – 18th for a slice of the action! BARNS GREEN OPEN GARDENS Barns Green has many beautiful gardens but unfortunately only a couple of gardeners felt confident to allow their gardens to be submitted this year. So, this year the Open Garden scheme has been cancelled. If you are interested in considering submitting your garden for 2018 let Barry Hearnshaw – Gardening Editor have your details. Plant of the Month JUNE Potentilla (Shrubby cinquefoil) A plant genus that comes in various guises of shrubby ,herbaceous and perennial form. The shrubby type comes in varying forms of habit, prostrate, low growing, medium tom large shrubs.

Foliage comes in varying shades of green; blue-green, limey-green to dark green. Growth for the varying forms, range from no more than 3ft(1m), for low growing forms. Medium shrubs 3 to 4ft (1-1.2m). For larger shrubs 4 to 5ft (1.2-1.5m). Flowers are borne in clusters, within the leaf axils and open intermittently. They open with the sun, lasting a few days, before fading with the sunlight, encouraging more flowers to open. 14

The range of colours are from whites , reds, pinks, yellows, oranges and orange-pink shades. Report by Mark Pearce your friendly local nurseryman. June Summer arrives June 21 is the longest day of the year, and the extra light and warmth encourages the garden to put on an exuberant burst of growth. But this extra light and warmth also means weeds will sprout up from seemingly nowhere. Keep on top of them by hoeing regularly in dry conditions. Top 10 jobs this month Hoe borders regularly to keep down weeds Be water-wise, especially in drought-affected areas Pinch out side shoots on tomatoes Harvest lettuce, radish, other salads and early potatoes Position summer hanging baskets and containers outside Mow lawns at least once a week Plant out summer bedding Stake tall or floppy plants Prune many spring-flowering shrubs Shade greenhouses to keep them cool and prevent scorch Report by Francesca Riccini Rudgwick Gardens 01403 822154 ———————————————————————————————————Readers write about their own garden: Robert Bruce of Sycamore Rise. We moved to Barns Green in December 2015. So, when it came to the design of our garden (which is sort of triangular rather than oblong and north facing), we decided on raised beds to make maintenance easier (less bending!), and a path that runs round the garden to give easy access to the borders without the need to go on the grass. Wide enough too to take that wheel chair one day! We used oak sleepers and rather than lay them horizontally, they are upright so the beds can curve round the garden. This was a great suggestion from our landscaper Luke Jennings. We love them. Of course, we have to deal with good old Sussex clay soil here, so the raised beds gave us the opportunity to import some decent soil and I must say, that has worked very well. The plants love it - so far at least! We extended the patio and positioned a little summer house with composite decking around it, where it catches the sun. We also have a small garden shed to store all the garden tools and bikes, and to give some structural height to the garden, we put up a couple of pergolas. We decided we wanted to have a lighting system in the garden so we could enjoy it in the evenings. There lights for the path, borders, decking and trees. Neale Francis did a fantastic job. Over the years, we’ve collected stuff like old chimney pots, garden tools and so on, and these have been added to the landscaping. They are a way of linking our new garden with our previous gardens and bring back many happy memories. 15

ST NICOLAS CHOIR at CHICHESTER CHOIRS FESTIVAL ‘MAKE A JOYFUL NOISE’ by William Mathias was the most challenging anthem for the choir when they took part in the RSCM Sussex Choirs Festival at Chichester Cathedral on Saturday 29th April. After a lot of work it did became more joyful! The service was taken from the festival service book ’Reform and Renewal’. Sadly a few choir members were unable to be with us this year.

We had an afternoon rehearsal, then the much enjoyed tea and cake in the sunny, walled garden of the Cloisters Caf.. The service started at 5.30pm and it was wonderful to sing in such an acoustic and atmospheric place, under the direction of Organist & Master of the Choristers Charles Harrison. Amongst the lovely selection of anthems, hymns, psalm and plainsong the service also included ’Greater Love’ by John Ireland and ’I give you a new commandment’ by Peter Nardone. Our rural choir is fortunate to have this opportunity to take part in such an event. It is inspiring and rewarding to sing with 200 other choristers. “Serve the Lord with gladness come before his presence with singing” If you too love singing, you would be so welcome to get in touch and find out more about us and what we get up to during the year. Mags Fisher Choir Mistress 01403 790717 magsfisher@btinternet.com —————————————————————————————————————— Anti-Social Driving: Barns Green and Itchingfield We have reviewed the results of the traffic survey which took place at the end of March. We expect they can give us advice about what can be done. Do please continue to use our Email address, info@BGTraffic.co.uk for your concerns, opinions and suggestions on Anti-Social Driving. Your comments are always discussed at our meetings. Please keep the evening of Tuesday 6th June free for the Annual Village Meeting, where we will be making another presentation, and making suggestions to residents.
