BIG Mag front page headline: STOP PARKING ON THE PAVEMENT In some parts of the village its difficult to avoid parking on part of the pavement or verge; so many of you may disagree with the “Letter to the Editor” written by Pip McBean on page 4. LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Send your letters by email to bigmag@barnsgreen.com A Polite Request Some motorists are parking partly on the pavements in the village to give road users more space to pass. However there are a few people in the village that use mobility scooters and have trouble passing these cars as they are restricting the width of the pavement, sometimes forcing them to take an alternative route or go on the road to pass the parked car. If there is no drop kerb nearby then this can sometimes cause quite a detour. The crossroads by the green is a case in point. Pippa McBean

St Nicolas Church - Thoughts from your Vicar. Lent this year begins on the 1st March when we will be holding a joint benefice Ash Wednesday service at St Nicolas, Itchingfield @ 7.30pm which will include the imposition of ashes, when the sign of the cross is made with ashes onto the foreheads of worshipers as a sign of mourning and repentance to God. Lent is traditionally a time of repentance, fasting, prayer and abstinence in preparation for the most important Christian festival of Easter. By observing the 40 days of Lent, Christians replicate Jesus Christ's sacrifice and withdrawal into the desert for 40 days. So why is this season of the church called Lent? Lent is an old English word meaning 'lengthen'. Lent is observed in spring, when the days begin to get longer.

Rev. Sandra Hall

Both the Eastern and Western churches observe Lent but they count the 40 days differently. The Western Church excludes Sundays (which is celebrated as the day of Christ's resurrection) whereas the Eastern Church includes them.

The churches also start Lent on different days. Western churches start Lent on the 7th Wednesday before Easter Day, Ash Wednesday. Eastern churches start Lent on the Monday of the 7th week before Easter and end it on the Friday 9 days before Easter. Eastern churches call this period the 'Great Lent'. We will be holding a Lent Course this year on Thursday evenings from 7.30-9pm in Slinfold Chapel, starting on the 2nd March, with the last session on the 6th April. The course is entitled ‘Living God’s Love’ and the sessions include ‘To live your love with generosity; joy; imagination; courage and for the sake of the world.’ The final session will be a summing up ending with the service of Compline (Night Prayer). All are invited to attend. I end with a Lenten prayer: Christ, who throughout these forty days for us did fast and pray, teach us with you to mourn our sins and close by you to stay. As you with Satan did contend and did the victory win, O give us strength in you to fight, in you to conquer sin. As you did hunger bear, and thirst, so teach us, gracious Christ, to die to self, and chiefly live by your most holy Word. And through these days of penitence, and through your Passiontide, and, evermore in life and death, Christ, with us abide. Amen. With love in Christ, Revd Sandra Hall. LOCAL SPORTS NEWS Contact our Sports Editor, Barry Hearnshaw by email: sports@barnsgreen.com CRICKET 56-person touring party from Barns Green Cricket Club have been on a tour of Kerala, India. 10 matches were organised with the Keralan Cricket Association, including games against u18, adult and senior sides. BGCC were based at St Xaviers College for their games (search it on Google!), a high quality ground with 8 pitches. The club will also be providing opposition sides with a BGCC tie, in order to commemorate each fixture. Local boys, Will Currie and Danny Conway, were in charge of the tour 'video diary' promising to get all the behind-the-scenes banter and exclusive footage! Adam Rice lead personal training sessions at the hotel gym, and BGCC President, Maff Barrett, served as the social liaison with the local community. The group departed from Gatwick on February 16, flying with Emirates airlines via Dubai and arriving in Trivandrum on February 17. With temperatures around 35 degrees, shade will be an absolute must. Pictures and updates can be found on the BGCC Facebook page at https://engb.facebook.com/Barns-Green-Cricket-Club-115887348429368/ Report by Chris Bailey DARTS The Monday night darts league started the new year with Barns Green visiting title contenders The Rising Sun. The Sun edged the contest 5 -3 denting Green hopes of the league title. The Green recovered with a home 6 -2 win over The Stout House which was disappointing from 6 -0 up. The next fixture is a Mickey Edwards plate semi-final, a trophy The Green currently hold, or would do if the league could find it... John Coxon has managed to secure the Jack Tofts Cup semi final to be played at Barns Green Club which will be between The Rising Sun and Southwater Social Club. Barns Green Friday night team continued their stuttering form with a 5 -4 loss to the Dog & Bacon 'A'. This however was followed up with excellent victories in an 8 -1 home win over The Kings Arms and a 5 - 4 win over a weakened BBHVC. The Windmill were the most recent match which produced a 6 -3 win for The Green. Report by John Coxen RUGBY Nearly two thirds of the way through the season and Barns Green sit fifth in a table of 12, one point behind Newick in fourth place and with one game in hand. The last month has seen victories against Eastbourne and Heathfield with the frost postponing our home game against Midhurst until 25th Feb (2.00pm KO). Away games against Pulborough, Ditchling and Rye over the next 4 weeks will surely decide the finishing league positions for all four sides. This is a difficult run in and Barns Green will need to be at their best to move into the top three at the end of the 8

season— but the team are playing solid competitive rugby and such a finish remains a realistic prospect. This month will see Barns Green field a casual side from a group of our avid spectators who are turning their hand back to playing, if just for a handful of games. Watch this space for more reports. Barns Green ladies touch team continues to train every Wednesday at Broadbridge Heath Sports Centre and all in all there is plenty going on at BGRFC! Thank you to all the spectators and sponsors who are helping Barns Green achieve great things as the 2016/17 season comes to a close. Report by Bill Bailey

The Sussex Botanical Recording Society has visited St. Nicolas Churchyard and is extremely pleased with the way our team looks after the conservation area. Silvia Simkin said: “I am taking part in the British Churchyard Wildflower Survey, and have visited Itchingfield Churchyard in April, July and September of this year. Your churchyard was a real pleasure to survey and was rich in wildflowers, grasses, butterflies, insects etc. It is such a joy to find a churchyard with so many native species of flowers and grasses that are allowed to grow and set seed, and I found 109 different species altogether. Well done all those who are responsible!” Pip said it is very difficult to run a churchyard under conservation conditions and keep everyone happy, as there are times in the countryside calendar when the Churchyard looks quite unkempt but that is a part of how we maintain and manage to achieve the 109 different native species of wild flowers etc. (Full survey details can be viewed on the website or in St. Nicolas). We strive to accommodate everyone’s wishes, thoughts and feelings in connection with the Churchyard. St Nicolas provides guidelines (a copy of which can be found at the back of the church) of do’s and don’ts but please speak with either Sandra Hall or myself if you have any concerns. BARNS GREEN & ITCHINGFIELD W.I. Our January meeting was at the home of one of our members and we listened to readings of poetry and prose that different members had chosen. There was a good mixture of both, some amusing and others more serious and were from some of the works of Eleanor Farjeon, Alfred Moyes, Pam Ayres, Spike Milligan, Terry Waite and James Bowen and also a letter written by a negro, once slave, to his ex master. Our next meeting is on March 16th in the village hall at 2.30pm. The subject for our speaker is ‘Farming’. New members will be very welcome. Miriam Coghill ——————————————————————————————————

Merve Goddard 01403 734408 merve.goddard@btinternet.com Mary Hallett ww1@barnsgreen.com

March 1917 brought the first news for this year of a local casualty. On 6 th March Mrs Mary Anne Knight Dennett of Jessamine Terrace received two letters. Army form B104-80a notified her that her husband, Percy, had been wounded and a second letter from Sister W E Tice of the 2/2 London Casualty Clearing Station in France brought the news that Percy had died at 8.25pm on 3rd March. A week later official confirmation of Percy’s death arrived from the War Office. Mary Anne Dennett was left widowed with two young daughters. She never remarried and her daughters remained at home throughout their lives, supporting their mother and one another in a grief that changed all their lives. We offer our sincere sympathy to Mrs Percy Knight who has lost her husband at the Front. He died of wounds on March 3rd. ITCHINGFIELD PARISH MAGAZINE Percy’s army pay would have stopped on the day he died, so Mary Anne was left with no income for five months. Fortunately for her, as part of the large Dennett/Knight family in Barns Green, she would have been supported by the family - for some widows the loss of their husband could mean months of near starvation as there were no state benefits to help women in their situation. Mary Anne’s house was owned by Allen Parker, and he would have been sympathetic to her situation, having three of his own sons serving in the army. In Barns Green, women like Mary Anne were surrounded by a strong community, who supported their neighbours both emotionally and practically. Eventually Mary Anne Dennett’s money worries were partly relieved by a letter from Army Records confirming that she would receive a widow’s pension and an allowance for their two daughters, following Percy’s death. Mary Anne died in 1964 and her daughters both died in 1979. All three are buried in the churchyard at St Nicolas, Itchingfield. 14

Barns Green Players Comedy Play – Look Who’s Talking The Barns Green Players are now busy rehearsing for another of its popular Comedy Evenings when Derek Benfield’s comedy play Look Who’s Talking will be performed on two evenings and one afternoon in May. The performances will be on Friday the 5th (8pm) and Saturday 6th May (2pm and 8pm) in the Barns Green Village Hall. Look Who’s Talking, is a two Act play written by Derek Benfield which deals with the trials and tribulations of deceit and misunderstanding within marriage. It begins as devoted couple, Sheila and Andrew prepare to entertain with Sunday afternoon lunch. The story itself is a farce in the true sense. The situation descends into mayhem as some uninvited guests turn up and the hosts begin to weave a web of lies and halftruths to hide their own possible infidelities, unaware that the other is doing the same. This leads to a complicated and hilarious series of misunderstandings and mistaken identities The play is being Directed by Winks Parrish and Warren Blanchard. Winks commented, “Look Who’s Talking is a very funny play. The plot and the script are hilarious and Warren and I are really looking forward to working with the cast and putting together what we are sure will be an outstanding show” This is one of Barns Green Players’ very popular comedy 'bring your own food' shows where the audience sits at tables of eight and enjoys drinks brought to the tables from our licensed bar. Make sure you get your tickets and tables organised early for one of the performances and enjoy a really entertaining show. Tickets are available from 20th March Contact the box office – 01403 731566 or through the website – www.barnsgreenplayers.co.uk Tickets are just £11.00 each or £88 for a full table of Eight. Doors Open 7.00pm with the Performances starting at 8.00pm (Evening performances)

And at 1.15pm for 2.00pm start for the Matinee There will be a Licensed Bar serving drinks throughout the performances. Tea and coffee will also be available for the matinee show. Please don’t bring your own drink. 15

BARNS GREEN ‘GREEN FINGERS’ Our page for local gardening enthusiasts. Our gardening reporter is Barry Hearnshaw. ————————— Barns Green Open Gardens Are you interested in opening your garden to the public as part of the Barns Green Inaugural Open Gardens Programme? Have you thought about opening you garden or allotment and letting other people get the same enjoyment from looking at your garden as you do. Visitors could be charge a small amount which would go to a Barns Green Nominated Charity. Opening your garden can be a very rewarding and valuable experience, for you, your visitors and the charities that benefit. Gardens don’t need to be large or elaborate to be enjoyable and interesting for visitors. Your garden may be just what we are looking for: · · · · · ·

interesting attractive maintained but not necessarily pristine and with ‘character’ Can you offer refreshments? Do you enjoy talking about your garden? Are you ready for an enjoyable and inspiring day?

The gardens can be small back gardens that have been made special by hard work, skill and the love of gardening. Maybe you have an unusual collection of shrubs, trees, roses, succulents or a keen vegetable grower, a garden retreat, courtyard garden or children’s garden. Visitors like to see interesting planning and design, a good range of plants and gardens which have been tended with love and care. Visitors often like to talk about the garden with the owners, and they also enjoy a good cup of tea or similar refreshments. Opening your garden to the public may seem daunting at first, but most garden owners find it a very enjoyable experience.

Plant of the Month Prunus'Kiku Shidare Sakura' (Cheal's Weeping Cherry) A tree of weeping habit, as the name suggests. Therefore ideal for a small garden or space. Will make a nice specimen, growing to a height of 3 to 6 metres (10 to 12ft).

Seasonal interest at this time of year, by way of double pink flowers, produced in clusters, on deciduous branches. However, the timing of flowering may intercede with the first growth of foliage, which is coppery/bronze in appearance. This compliments the flowers. The foliage will turn to a mid-green on maturity, and may offer some Autumn colour of reds and yellow. March Spring arrives!

Spring usually arrives by mid-March and the frequent sunny days provide the opportunity for an increasing range of gardening tasks. It's time to get busy preparing seed beds, sowing seed, cutting back winter shrubs and generally tidying up around the garden. —————-
