St Nicolas Church - Thoughts from your Vicar.

Remember in November All Souls Day gives us an opportunity to reflect on the loss of those we have loved; our joint benefice service this year will be in St Peter’s Church Slinfold on Sunday 6th November at 5pm. There is a list in St Nicolas church for names to be entered of those you wish to be remembered at this service and during the service there will also be the opportunity to light a candle to remember your loved ones. The season of Remembrance is an opportunity to give thanks Rev. Sandra Hall for those who have made the ultimate sacrifice, and it is important to celebrate Armistice Day as well as Remembrance Sunday. On Sunday 13th November our main Remembrance service starts at 10.45am in the Village Hall. During this service we will, with churches all around the country, keep two minutes silence at 11am as a sign of respect for those who lost their lives in the two World Wars and also in more recent conflicts along with those who still suffer the effects of war. This will also be an opportunity to meet our new Associate Priest, Rosemary Cattell after her licensing service at St Peter’s Slinfold on the 10th November at 7.30pm, when I shall also become your Rector. Sundays are the days when we recount the long history of God’s people, and our communion services are in remembrance of Jesus Christ who conquered death through his ultimate sacrifice. This helps us to remember that the wars of the twentieth century are part of a long struggle for peace throughout history.

In its Remembrance liturgies, the Church holds out a reminder of God’s call to peace as a counterweight to the powers that tempt or drive us into conflict. The Church maintains the idea that life, and death, are both made of far more than we can ever imagine; that human beings can spend their whole lives effectively living in death; that resurrection is on hand for those who have not yet died and who want to turn to fullness of life; and that the glory of God is seen in a human being fully alive. The Christian faith is full of mystery, an opportunity to wonder and question, we experience these aspects at all of our services as together we journey with God in an attempt to gain a better understanding. LOCAL SPORTS NEWS Contact our Sports Editor, Barry Hearnshaw by email: sports@barnsgreen.com Darts The Thursday night summer league has come to an end with the Green winning the Division Two title and picking the Trophy up at the Plough, Lower Beeding. So well done to Gareth Syverson, Fran Pickett, Larry Kavanagh, Chris Fry, Shane Reynolds, Jason Cooper, Jason Courquin, Tim Leaney and Kevin Bance. Gareth and myself also picked up the Pairs runners up trophies.

Back to the Friday Winter league and The Green welcomed Broadbridge Heath Village Centre containing six Super League players three of which have represented Sussex. What followed was best described by the weekly write-up from the league: In the words of Mr Kennard, it was a pleasure to watch both teams play such a high quality game of darts, that was a superb advertisement for Friday night darts. That was the quote Gary gave after the Barns Green Club match against BBHVC, the match that ended in BBHVC winning 6-3 with a total of 8 (eight) maximums hit and a ton finish. The maximums were hit by Gareth Syverson x 2, John Coxon, Ron Clarke, and Doug Mason for Barns Green. With Nigel Wakefield x 2 and Chris Read for BBHVC, with Gareth Syverson taking out the 100 finish. Well played to all that were involved in that match." To put the 180's total into context a superleague match of nearly double the amount of legs will normally produce 2-3 180's. An incredible match but well done to BBHVC. Friday nights continued with a 6 -3 away win at The Windmill featuring a 117 check out by Ron Clarke followed by an 8 -1 away win at The Rising Sun. John Coxon Rugby Five games played, five games won and BGRFC sit joint first in Sussex Division Two having only conceded 20 points in all of those games whilst scoring 177. Several clubs in the top half of the league are upcoming fixtures and Pulborough Seconds, Ditchling, Crowborough Seconds and East Grinstead (who are joint top) all have to be played away before Christmas; Rye (5th November) and Newick (26th Nov) will play us at home. Whilst winning, the game is noticeably faster and more dynamic than the last few seasons in Sussex Three-our team have established a high work rate on the pitch, a rock solid defence, are putting some real effort into training off the pitch (Wednesday nights at Brinsbury) and are relishing the upcoming challenges of playing new clubs to previous at this higher level. October saw 'The Wooden Spoon Society' invite three of our club members to lunch at The House of Lords as a recognition for the charitable contributions the Club has made to this rugby based children's charity and the month also saw 27 of our Vice 10


Presidents and friends enjoy an excellent lunch at The Queens Head. Additionally, our vibrant ladies touch rugby team continues to train under lights on Wednesday's at Broadbridge Heath. Cricket - Successful Cricket Season leads to “Tour of India” Barns Green cricket club finished the 2016 season with another two promotions, meaning both league teams have been promoted twice in two years! The first team, having won Division 4 in 2015, were promoted from Division 3 along with West Wittering, and will face local sides Broadbridge Heath and Wisborough Green in Division 2 next year. The second team led their division for much of the season, ending up promoted in 3rd place from Division 7. Furthermore, batsmen Matt Bassett (1st team) and Tom Ott (2nd team) topped the tables for most runs scored in their respective leagues! With the club enjoying virtually unprecedented success on the field, Barns Green will – for the first time – field a third league side, for the 2017 season. The 3rdteam will essentially be a development XI, allowing for the most promising colts to play league cricket, alongside some wise older heads! They will play their home games at Storrington and are already looking forward to an exciting season. Into autumn and the indoor league side are getting into their stride. Captained by Will Haynes, they were promoted into Division 1 last year and will face some big teams in this year’s competition. Finally, the cricket club will tour Kerala, India, in February 2017. A once in a lifetime opportunity, the tour has been made possible by our very own Indian liaison, Geoffrey Clements, and will include cricket matches, cultural visits and sightseeing in the amazing southern Indian state. With a 60-strong party of locals going, it promises to be a truly memorable experience and one that it’s hoped will create on ongoing relationships between BGCC and local clubs in Kerala. Report by C. Bailey Football - What a difference a season makes. Pre-season training, a few new players, new coaches and new vision has paid dividends with both teams losing only one match between them. Both teams are lying in positive positions which gives them confidence. Ed Goacher top scorer last season is already top score this season with 5 goals from 7 matches. 11

BARNS GREEN HALF MARATHON and 10K RACE: Last month Barns Green hosted its annual half marathon race for the 34th time. This year, for the very first time, the organisers introduced a new 10km race and almost 400 runners took part. Over 1200 runners registered. The 10k race was won by Neil Boniface of Horsham Joggers in 33 mins 31 seconds. The winner of the Barns Green women’s 10k race was Elspeth Turner from Horsham Blue Star Harriers who completed the course in 39 mins 34 seconds. The official charity this year was St Catherine’s Hospice and this year’s event is expected to raise almost £6,000. Mark Lay, a former marathon runner, who is a patient at St Catherine’s Hospice, was the official starter of the inaugural 10k race. Commenting on the event, Race Director, Vernon Jennings said “I couldn’t be happier with the way that the day went. Launching the new 10k race was not easy and presented my committee with some testing challenges. However, the new race proved to be extremely popular which justified our decision to introduce it. We are very encouraged by the support it received and are looking forward to developing and growing this new race alongside our traditional and much loved half marathon. 12

NEWLY-WED GIVES UP HONEYMOON TO RUN HALF MARATHON The fancy dress winner at this year's Barns Green Half Marathon was Gemma Berrill. Gemma was dressed as BB8 the robot from Star Wars; The Force Awakens. Gemma, who got married last week, decided instead of going on honeymoon she would dress up and run in the half marathon. ———————————————————--———————

In September we were hosts to the group meeting which is held twice a year and where W.I.s from Billingshurst, Rudgwick, Warnham and Barns Green get together. A representative from each W.I. gave an account of the activities they had done since March. Our guest speaker was Katherine Collette whose talk was entitled ‘Downton Revisited’. She made a dramatic entrance in a charming Edwardian ‘afternoon tea’ outfit, complete with gloves, bag and parasol. She described how Edwardian society entertained in the afternoons, at dinner parties and from ‘the Saturday to the Monday’; definitely not called ‘weekends’ in those days! To illustrate her interesting descriptions she sang a variety of songs from jazz and romantic to opera. It gave us a good insight into how wealthy Edwardians entertained and the sort of food that was consumed. We ended our meeting with tea and a raffle. Our next meeting will be on November 17th at 2.30pm in the village hall. Douglas Eaton the speaker will give a talk on ‘The Queen’s Knickers’! Visitors will be very welcome. An opportunity to help decide future plans for the Barns Green playground. The Barns Green Field Committee have some funds available to modernise the existing playground at Barns Green and have been discussing possible options. A popular suggestion was moving the entire playground and building a more modern, landscaped activity area on the other side of the social club. Merve Goddard 01403 734408 merve.goddard@btinternet.com Mary Hallett ww1@barnsgreen.com A Headstone for Henry The BGW project team is delighted to announce that the Commonwealth War Graves Commission has now installed an official headstone for Henry Bennet in the churchyard of Holy Innocents, Southwater where he was buried under the rites of his Congregational Faith on the 6th May 1919. As those of you who have been following this story may remember, Henry died at his home in Cross Lane on the 3rd May 1919 from TB resulting from his time in the trenches in 1916/17 but was not recognised at the time as a casualty of war. Working with a group called “In From The Cold”, the project team assembled the evidence required to convince the CWGC to reconsider his case and the result of this now stands in a quiet corner of the old part of Holy Innocents churchyard. Barns Green Remembers….Somme 100 Don’t forget that on Saturday November 12th the Barns Greens War Project in conjunction with Barns Green Village Hall will staging a “Somme 100” commemoration at the Hall. The evening will start at 7.30pm and will include a new exhibition on the impact of the mid-war years 1916-1917, on Barns Green, Itchingfield and its people; a showing of the newly remastered Imperial War Museum/UNESCO Heritage film “The Battle of The Somme”; the launch of the project’s latest book – “From Itchingfield to Ismailia” and a showing of the Royal British Legion Festival of Remembrance from the Royal Albert Hall on the big screen. Entrance is free but please bring “finger food” to share and enjoy as part of the “bring and share” supper. A fully licensed bar will be available for the purchase of alcohol and soft drinks so remember to bring money for this, the raffle and the purchase of any of the project’s books that may take your fancy.

Helping to rebuild lives and communities in Eastern Europe The annual Family and Elderly Shoebox Appeal is now taking place. It has been running since 1992 and has delivered smiles to thousands of people in Eastern Europe over the years. The boxes are sent to Albania, Bulgaria, Moldova and Ukraine as well as Romania. The Family Shoeboxes of gifts are given to families who often have to make a choice between buying food or fuel at Christmas time – buying presents is just not a priority. Many of these families do not have running water, heating or electricity. Some live in appalling conditions, often living in just one or two rooms, and life for them is a real struggle to survive. The Elderly Shoebox of gifts are similar and would ideally enclose reading glasses, a wind-up torch and sensory items. For ideas, including how to fill a box for under £10, go to the website detailed below. BARNS GREEN ‘GREEN FINGERS’ Our page for local gardening enthusiasts. Our gardening reporter is Barry Hearnshaw. ————————— WEST DEAN GARDENS Harold Ainsworth Peto one of the foremost garden designers of the 19th/20th century, took on the commission of West Dean gardens. Harold Peto was a man of exquisite taste, with a talent for placing objects sympathetically to their surroundings. One of the best promoters of Italian renaissance, Harold was also influenced by the Arts and Crafts period although his work was structured rather than informal. Harold softened his structures with plants in the manner of Gertrude Jeykll and William Robinson, who thought well of his designs. Jekyll illustrated Harold’s work in her book on “Garden Ornament”. Harold Peto created some of the finest gardens in England, inspired mainly by the Italianate style but always in sympathy with the surrounding English countryside. Harold Peto wrote one book during his life, ‘The Boke of Iford’. Creatively inspired by its rich heritage and setting, West Dean is brimming with features to enjoy. An impressive collection of working Victorian Glasshouses, a 300 foot pergola, a spring garden and the occasional surreal fibreglass tree offer yearround interest to garden visitors. The impressive 100-metre-long pergola designed by Harold Peto and needed extensive restoration following the 1987 storm. It is host to many varieties of magnolia, clematis, rose and honeysuckle. The pergola is probably the gardens most enduring feature. If you are considering an afternoon out, visit West Dean, at Singleton near Goodwood. It’s a West Sussex treasure. Remember winter can be a tough time for birds in terms of water and food, so keep supplies well topped up.

Cyclamen Hederifolium An ideal plant for ground cover, mixed border or under planting as a continuation of seasonal interest.

A tuberous perennial, with flowers borne at their peak within November. Colours range from pink to deep pink and reds. Heisght between 4 and 6 inches (10 to 15 cm). after flowering foliage appears, being dark green with silvery flecks, which last until March. Then the plant goes dormant until late autumn, where the whole process starts again, Jobs for the month of November Winter is on its way. Leaves are falling slowly this year but just you wait, they will fall rapidly soon, and wind and rain will be on the increase. Tender plants will need protecting from frost, gales and freezing rains. Move plants into the greenhouse, or into a sheltered spot, but if you can't, it is worth wrapping plants or pots in situ. Clear up fallen leaves - especially from lawns, ponds and beds. Raise containers onto pot feet to prevent waterlogging Plant tulip bulbs for a spring display next year. Prune roses to prevent wind-rock. Plant out winter bedding. Cover brassicas with netting if pigeons are a problem. Insulate outdoor containers from frost - bubble wrap works well. Stop winter moth damage to fruit trees using grease bands around the trunks. Put out bird food to encourage winter birds into the garden. Use a seasonal bonfire - where this is allowed - to dispose of excess debris unfit for composting. 19

The Barns Green Pantomime. DICK WHITTINGTON Tickets on sale 1st November Yes, it’s Panto time again. Cast members from the Barns Green Players have just started rehearsing in preparation for what we are sure will be another great show. There will be a total of 6 shows performed over two week ends in the Barns Green Village Hall this coming January. The shows will be on Friday 13th (evening), Saturday 14th (afternoon and evening), Friday 20th (evening), and Saturday 21st (afternoon and evening). Neale Francis is the Director this year. “We have a great cast and a cracking show for you to look forward to. Dick Whittington is one of the traditional pantomimes but we have quite a few twists and surprises lined up this year. Our Dick Whittington lives for music and is writing his own musical so there will be lots of singing and dancing for you to enjoy. The backstage crew have been sawing and hammering, painting and sewing to make all the sets and costumes which will all lead to what I’m sure will be a production that all age groups will enjoy”. The afternoon performances are particularly suitable for the very youngest children. There are singalongs and sweets for the kids and opportunities for the audience to join in with the fun. For the evening performances there is a licensed bar serving a variety of alcoholic and soft drinks as well as sweets. The afternoon performances begin at 2pm and evening performances at 7.30pm. Tickets cost just £11 for adults and £8 for children. (all tickets on both Saturday evenings are £11.00) There is a special price of just £8 for all tickets on Friday 13th January. Thanks to Half Marathon organisers, parents that helped on the stall and in the cloakroom, everyone that bought from us and were patient at peak times and who baked cakes for us. Thanks also to those that loaned us equipment; Julian Taylor, Dean the funfair man. Our fundraising team member Laura Duda raised £295 by running the 10K race – thanks Laura. Thanks to those who helped Bev at the water station, especially those who don't have children at Playgroup anymore. We organised a ‘bags 4 school’ collection in September, raising £160 – thanks to all who donated. 22
