BIG Mag front page headline: YOU ARE INVITED TO A MEETING ABOUT THE FUTURE OF THE VILLAGE If, like me, you don’t enjoy going to meetings, you probably want to avoid them. But if you care about the village this one is really important. A few months ago the Parish Council sent a survey to every household in the village. Now you can hear the results of that survey about the Barns Green & Itchingfield Neighbourhood Plan at an open meeting on 21st October 2016 at 7.30pm at the Village Hall. Details are on page 5.

St Nicolas Church - Thoughts from your Vicar.
We are celebrating Harvest Festival this year on Sunday 2nd October within our Parish Communion services. And on Saturday evening, 1st October, we are having a joint benefice Harvest Supper at Slinfold Village Hall, 6.30 for 7pm. In thankfulness for God’s provision, we will again be collecting gifts of food to be passed on to the Horsham Food Bank and our collections that day will be sent to East and West Africa to an appeal for rebuilding lives and encouraging community after drought, conflict and the Ebola outbreak.
Rev. Sandra Hall
Many of our harvest hymns remind us that giving thanks for food might not be the only thing we need to think about. A crop of quite a different kind will be gathered by the Lord of the Harvest, when he comes to bring us into his eternal barns. One of the prayers we use at our Sunday Communion expresses the hope that each one of us will be a part of the Harvest that God will gather into his everlasting kingdom when life on earth is over: "Look with favour on your people, gather us in your loving arms and bring us with all the saints to feast at your table in heaven." It’s appropriate that many of our churches now celebrate Harvest Festival within the context of a service of Holy Communion. The spiritual food we receive there provides the energy we need to sustain our lives as Christians in this world, and it prepares us for our eternal home in the next. So when our Harvest Festival and our Holy Communion are combined into a single great thanksgiving, we really do join with all the Saints in saying, "come, ten thousand angels, come, raise the glorious harvesthome!" Also in October we will have a joint benefice Choral Evensong at St Nicolas on Sunday 9th at 6pm and on Saturday 15th I will be leading a quiet day at Gossops Green Convent. Attending a Quiet Day is one way of ensuring that we make space in our busy schedule. It is like putting an ‘AT HOME’ sign at the window of our soul, so God can see we are ready to listen. Numbers for this day are limited so please let me know if you wish to attend, there is a cost of £5 per person which pays for the venue and refreshments, you will need to bring a packed lunch. Please do join us for all or any of our celebrations, you would be most welcome. With love in Christ, Revd Sandra Hall Telephone: 01403 790197 or email: sandra.richard@tiscali.co.uk 7
LOCAL SPORTS NEWS Contact our Sports Editor, Barry Hearnshaw by email: sports@barnsgreen.com DARTS Barns Green Darts Team Seal Second Division Title The excellent season continued for the Thursday night darts team with a 6 -3 home win against Southwater and a 6 -3 away win against The Coot. This was followed with a 8 - 1 home win against the Kings Head 'All Blacks'. A double header at The Windmill and the game effectively to decide the league produced a stunning 7 - 2 win for The Green. Next fixture was away to The Kings Head 'Wild Geese' and The Green earned a worthy 5 - 4 win. Warnham Stags turned up with only 5 men to their credit but had no respite going down 9 - 0 to a rampant Green side. This all lead up to a last match showdown with the second placed side The Kings Arms 'Academy’, with Barns Green being 6 points clear at the top of the table and 9 points on the night to play for. The night went well for The Green as they produced a fine 7 - 2 win to seal the second division title. Larry Kavanagh hit a 180 and J.Coxon a 106 outshot. The Friday night winter league team kicked off their fixtures with a fine 7 - 2 win at The Roffey Cricket Club and repeated the feat with a 7 -2 home win over The Dog & Bacon 'A'. Report by John Coxon Rugby Two games in our higher league Sussex 2 (Canterbury Jack) and two victories-one away against Sussex Police and the second at home against Uckfield Second Team. Both games well-constructed and controlled, tries supplied by forwards and backs in each of the games and the transition to higher rugby has started well-some 75 points scored versus only 15 against. However, both games exposed areas of play to improve upon and the coaches will be looking to keep this momentum by addressing those issues in training. Home games in Oct will take place on Oct 1st (Eastbourne Seconds) and Oct 22nd (Pulborough Seconds). The 22 matches this season against Crowborough 2, Ditchling, East Grinstead, Eastbourne 2, Heathfield & Waldron 2, Midhurst, Newick 1, Pulborough 2, Rye 1, Sussex Police and Uckfield 2 will surely be a great challenge and test Barns Green if they are to replicate last seasons success. The ladies touch rugby team continues to train on The Village Green on Wednesday evenings from 6.30pm and are currently are looking to continue this work indoors as the dark nights pull in. Report by Bill Bailey 8
Football Barns Green have put last season’s woes behind them. Both teams have started the season without losing a match. The first team only failed to win by drawing on the 17th September by scoring an own goal in the latter stages of the game. The leading goal scorer is again Ed Goacher with 4 goals. Two preseason training sessions per week, seems to have paid dividends. 1st Team West Sussex Football League Division 2 North 17-Sep Barns Green 2-2 Horsham Crusaders 10-Sep Barns Green 2-1 Ewhurst 03-Sep Rudgwick 2-3 Barns Green 2nd Team West Sussex Football League Division 5 North 10-Sep Slinfold Res 2-3 Barns Green 03-Sep Horsham Crusaders Res 1-3 Barns Green Two Local boys achieve International and National status Luke Hill represents England in an International Fishing match in Ireland 14-year-old Luke Hill represented the England Youth Fly Fishing Squad in Killarney in Ireland for the 2016 Youth Fly Fishing International. Luke has been fishing since he was since he was eight, his grandparents bought him his first rod when he showed an interest in the sport. Luke was on a training session with the England team prior to the Ireland International match when he achieved his finest catch to date a magnificent blue trout. Luke is now hoping that his selection for the England team, will be the start of many more matches, representing his country. Report by B. BARNS GREEN & ITCHINGFIELD W.I. In August as a change to our usual afternoon meeting we met at 12o’clock and enjoyed lunch together in the village hall. This was followed by our programme planning for next year’s calendar which we then discussed at length before arriving at a provisional programme for each month next year. We have tried to provide something that everyone will find something to enjoy and it includes guest speakers, outings and a special meal out in April to celebrate our 95th anniversary. In September we enjoyed an afternoon on the Wey and Arun canal. The day was hot and sunny and we set off on the Wiggonholt, an electrically powered boat and cruised along the Loxwood Link section of the Surrey/West Sussex border. To add to the enjoyment we were served a delicious cream tea on board. Our meeting on October 20th will be our AGM. Visitors will be very welcome at Barns Green village hall at 2.30pm. Vacancy at Barns Green Field. The Barns Green Field Committee would like to thank all of the people, especially Trevor Corquin, for their efforts in keeping the village green tidy and ready for all of the sports that use the area on a regular basis. We have recently erected a fence to stop parking on the grass between the social club and the village hall to complement the new car park. This area, next to the playpark is now being regularly used by families and children for games and recreation. The Field Committee are looking for someone to help strim, cut some grass, prune trees and to keep the sundial at the corner of the green in good condition. There are some areas that the new tractor/ mower cannot reach, so if anyone has a few hours each month and might be willing to help, please contact Jim Martin on 01403 733455 to discuss possible duties and rates of payment.
