St Nicolas Church - Thoughts from your Vicar. September is for many people a time of beginnings, as Bishop Mark points out in his letter below; newness is all around us at this time of year. And there is newness which affects the Church. This year in Itchingfield with Slinfold that newness comes in the form of a new Associate Priest in the benefice. Revd Rosemary Cattell, formerly the Curate at Warnham, will be joining us in November. This is a change that is most welcome; although Rosemary is part time she will be a valuable addition to our ministry team, enabling us to do more within each parish. And at the same time that Rosemary joins us I will become your Rector at a joint service led by Bishop Mark and Archdeacon Fiona on Thursday 10th November, 7.30 pm at St Peter’s, Rev. Sandra Hall Slinfold followed by refreshments in the Village Hall. This is an example of where change is positive and something to which we can all look forward to – I certainly do! Bishop's Letter Thinking creatively about our gifts.... Autumn, for many people, marks a new beginning. Schools, colleges and universities begin new academic years and many people are marking a fresh start after exam results or graduation. People are starting out with what they have and trying to make something out of it. Add some industry, imagination and perhaps a little charm to existing talents and skills and so much becomes possible for those with a positive outlook. A positive outlook requires us to think creatively about what we can do with the gifts and resources available to us rather than looking at what we consider meagre resources and bemoaning the fact we don't have enough. Sometimes it can appear that life has dealt us a difficult hand with massive challenges and problems to overcome but almost nothing with which to tackle those hardships. Instead of complaining to the hard master who has given us so much less than others seem to have, we are called to take our modest talent and to do with it what we can......and it is amazing what appreciation, support and encouragement that effort can inspire - giving us far more with which to work for the common good. +Mark I pray that we will all have the opportunity to embrace a new beginning this Autumn that will encourage us to move forward and bring us God’s abundant blessings.

With love in Christ, Revd Sandra Hall Telephone: 01403 790197 or email: sandra.richard@tiscali.co.uk

LOCAL SPORTS NEWS Contact our Sports Editor, Barry Hearnshaw by email: sports@barnsgreen.com The Olympics in Rio have been an inspiration with Great Britain achieving its greatest medal haul in over 100 years, 27 Gold, 23 Silver, 17 Bronze and 67 medals in total. However, Barns Green Village is a sporting inspiration to the rest of country. If you have visited the village green on any evening of the week during the summer you will have seen Cricket coaching or matches being played by all age groups, Cricket nets being used by enthusiastic groups, Stoolball matches, Rugby training (men and women), Football training, keep fit on Saturday mornings and football being played by groups of all ages at all times of the day. Barns Green needs no inspiration it leads by example. Darts. The Thursday night dart team continued their league fixtures with a visit to Head Billingshurst to play one of their three Thursday night teams , in this case 'The All Blacks'. The Green came away with a 7 -2 victory in a packed darts area keeping them at the top of the league. The following week saw a visit from another Kings Head team, 'The Wild Geese' in a top of the table clash. Despite being 3 - 3 after the singles games, The Green prevailed 6 -3 taking all the doubles games. A journey to the Warnham Club followed with a Barns Green team missing a few regulars. Warnham belied their struggling position in the league to come out winners 5 - 4 with Shane Reynolds and Kevin Bance winning both their matches for the Green. Next in the calender was the Pairs Competition held at Roffey Social Club. The event was well attended with 34 pairs competing. Barns Green's Gareth Syverson and John Coxon made it through 4 games to the final but then went down 3 -2 in a close fought match. Notable on their route, was the 2 - 0 second round victory over Sussex's Andy Gurr and Crawley Super League player Gary Simpson who were possibly the strongest pair in the competition. Other high lights were a 180 from Gareth, and an 80 finish from John to steal the semi final from high scoring Pip Pranskus and Clive Gee from Storrington. Report by John Coxon Rugby Saturday July 23rd saw BGRFC celebrate their first 25 years with a spectacular dinner attended by over 150 guests and most notably Jason Leonard, one of the most capped and respected English rugby players of all time. A marquee right next to the rugby field high on Fullfords Hill was always high risk, but blessed with amazing weather, young and old, past and present enjoyed a tremendous evening with Jason the undoubted highlight. Great 'laugh out loud' anecdotes of past internationals and encounters, a willingness to sign every past programme that any of us could find and a real ability to connect with us as a community rugby club, he was an absolute ambassador for the game for rugby.

7

The presentations were numerous with Danny Conway and Mark Brown featured in the pictures, plus it was great to see most of the 'originals' who helped start the Club, return to help us celebrate those 25 years. Hearty congratulations and thanks to our Chairman Spudge Stanbridge who made the success of this dinner a personal mission and also the catering team from the Queens Head who were really terrific, plus of course all of sponsors, VP's and friends who help keep the Club in the healthy state that it is. Thank you to all our guests for their participation-dozens of people walking up from the village to enjoy the evening-some who ignored all suggestions to 'take a torch' for the walk home! We start the season in a new league, a much better standard of rugby than ever before, but we are ready and looking forward to this new challenge. Training has been run for some weeks with a good turnout and some new bloody keen to join a successful team. Alongside Barn Green First team training sessions, a ladies’ rugby team with a dozen or so players have also been training for many weeks. Report by Andrew Bailey

Cricket Barns Green 1st X1 have been promoted to Division 2 after a very good season, there is a possibility that they can still win their league. Barns Green 2nd X1 are on course to do the same with one game left to play. A full report will be published in next month’s Big Mag. Report by M Barret Football Barns Green football teams is a long way into their training programme for the coming season. Training occurs on Tuesday and Thursday with a few new players and last seasons teams. Both !st and 2nd team have new managers – 1st team Dan Pask and 2nd team Jake Oxenham who are both optimistic about the coming season. Any players without a team are invited to the weekly training sessions.

THE MUSIC HALF MARATHON Sunday, 25 September sees the 34th Running of the Barns Green 1/2M and the inaugural 10K Race. The races will be run from Barns Green through Christ’s Hospital School and back to Barns Green where the 10K race will finish. The Half Marathon then continues to Brooks Green, Dragons Green, back up to Donkey Bridge and onwards to the finish in Barns Green. To help the runners along the way this year we have four varieties of music: Band Location Sponsor Featherstone Jazzmen Sussex Steel Paul Stanworth Juke Box 6

Village Green, Barns Green Corner of Trout Lane and Two Mile Ash Road The Bax Castle, Donkey Bridge George & Dragon

The Queen’s Head J R Print Nick Cook Kingswood Eggs

These Bands have been sited so that the 10K runners will pass the bands four times and the Half Marathon runners will pass the bands nine times. Our thanks go to the Sponsors of the bands and to the ‘Bax Castle’ and the ‘George and Dragon’ who have helped with providing space and power for the bands. These pubs will be open during the races for refreshments should you wish to watch the races on the course, as will the ‘Queen’s Head’. Please be aware that the safety of the runners is paramount to the Race Committee and, as such, we have a Road Closure in force from 09:30 – 12:30 on Race Day. Therefore should you need to visit any of the above pubs then please ensure that you check your route before Race Day. Other refreshments outlets, together with stalls, a fun fare and other displays will be available on the Village Green. ——————————————————————————————— POOL The Summer of 2016 will not be remembered by Doug Mason, Elliot Turner, Dave Butler, Rich Gross, Alister Scrivens and Shane Turner as the year England Football team failed to perform the Euros or the GB Team performed magnificently at Olympics but the year the won the wooden spoon in the Horsham & District Pool League Summer League Division X. Although they won only one match, they lost the other 9 so closely, that they could have been in the top three so easily. They were so unfortunate. 2016 was their first season so they were suffering from first season nerves. Doug Mason, Elliot Turner, Dave Butler all had a good season and need to be applauded for their performances. The League matches are being followed by a Barns green Autumn Pool Tournament. Competition details will be announced shortly. 9

St Catherine’s Hospice is the official charity for Barns Green Half Marathon and 10km This year will see the 34th running of the Barns Green Half Marathon and the first running of a new 10km race and this year’s chosen charity for the event is St Catherine’s Hospice. St Catherine’s Hospice is a charity dedicated to providing specialised end of life care and support to local people, their families, friends and carers. For over 30 years it has been providing high quality hospice care, free of charge, to people living in Crawley, Horsham, Mid Sussex and East Surrey. St Catherine’s responds to the needs of each individual, helping people achieve the best possible quality of life. This year’s event promises to be bigger than ever before as the organisers have introduced a 10km race to take place alongside the half marathon. The Barns Green Half Marathon and 10km races will both take place on Sunday 25th September 2016. The Half Marathon will start at 10am and the 10km race at 10.20am. The new 10km race will start at the same place as the Half Marathon and the finish will be beside the Green in Sandhill Road. The 10km race which will be open to anyone over the age of 16 and like the Half Marathon will take place on closed roads and will follow part of the Half Marathon route. There will be an additional section of the 10km route that will take place in the grounds of Christ’s Hospital School. There will be the usual medals and prizes for the 10km race and the entrance fee will be £15 for affiliated runners and £17 for unaffiliated. Commenting on this year’s charity, Barns Green Half Marathon Race Director, Vernon Jennings said, ““We are delighted to have St Catherine’s Hospice as our official charity this year as it provides a unique and essential service for our region. Each year the charity needs to raise £6m in voluntary income to ensure it can keep providing vital services to those who need them. We hope that everyone who takes part in this year’s race or comes along to cheer on the runners will support the vital work that they do”. Since the Barns Green Half Marathon began in 1982, this unique village event has raised a huge amount of money for charity. Last year almost 1500 runners registered for the race which follows a route through the lanes of Barns Green, Itchingfield, Christ’s Hospital and close to Southwater through some of the most scenic countryside in West Sussex. Almost £10,000 was raised by the 2015 race and all this money has been distributed to various charities as well as groups, youth and sports clubs in and around the village who helped with the staging of the race. For further details on how to take part in the race just visit the Barns Green Half Marathon website; barnsgreen-half.org.uk 10

BARNS GREEN & ITCHINGFIELD W.I. Our speaker in July was Jackie Fry whose talk was entitled ‘Recycle, Renew’. She told us that throughout her life she has made things out of recycled items, starting in the 1950s with childhood games and toys. Her family has influenced her on the things she has made and she brought along several items which she told an interesting story about. There was a double bedspread quilt made from a Laura Ashley maternity dress of hers, and other old clothes. It had taken over twenty years to complete! There was a rug made from her father’s polo shirts and blankets, a bag from denim jeans, a blanket from wool used from many different knitted items and a Christmas garland made from a red and gold wedding jacket. Each item had a family story behind it with amusing anecdotes. We will not be having our usual meeting in September as we have booked a trip on the Wey and Arun canal with a cream tea on 9th. On 6th September a new national phone number 105 will be launched by electricity network operators for customers to call should they need to report or get information about a power cut in their area. Key points to note about this service are: * Dialling 105 will put customers through to their local electricity network operator at the company that manages the cables, power lines and substations that deliver electricity into homes and businesses in their area. * 105 is just one of the ways that customers can contact their electricity network operator. They can also contact them by phone or via their website, and most network operators are on social media too. * 105 is a free service for people in England, Scotland and Wales. * Customers can call 105 no matter who they choose to buy electricity from. * Customers can also call 105 if they spot damage to electricity power lines and substations that could put anyone in danger. If there’s a serious immediate risk, they should call the emergency services too. 15

Bellringers’ 90th Birthday Celebrations Sorry Your Maj, not this time, you’ve had your turn. No, these celebrations were for another highly illustrious personage: Winnie-the-Pooh was first published in autumn 1926. For this special anniversary occasion our band decided to make their annual outing an Expotition to the Hundred Acre Wood. In bellringing parlance “outing” means a short visit to try the bells at each of a number of churches in a particular area. First visit was to Fletching. The bells had a rather heavy feel, very different from Itchingfield, nevertheless we managed OK. Then it was straight across the high street to the cafe for a Little Something, which turned out to take quite some time. Next call was at Coleman’s Hatch, where our visit was made specially entertaining by Brian with his own version of the Indian Rope Trick. Then it was off for a bring-&-share picnic at a beautiful viewpoint in Ashdown Forest, during which nice things were said about Val & Carol for planning the tour and Mary for co-ordinating the picnic. After lunch it was down to Hartfield, where we were happy to find the bells easier to handle than the morning towers. We thought we acquitted ourselves quite well, though in saying this perhaps I should add that we did take the precaution of not asking any folk outside for their opinions afterwards. Then it was a short drive & a ten-minute walk to the highlight of the day, Pooh Bridge for the Olympic Poohsticks Championship. The competition was intense, too hot I’m afraid for some of us Bellringers of Very Little Brain, nevertheless I’m delighted to report that it was another gold for Britain. The outing ended with tea at Pooh Corner, Piglet’s Tea Room. If on reading this you get the impression that bellringers spend more time eating & drinking than ringing, you could be right. Indeed if you go up to the ringing chamber at St Nicolas’ Church, on the notice-board you can see Itchingfield ringers’ motto “bells plus cakes equals fat happy ringers”! Geoff Chamberlin

Merve Goddard 01403 734408 merve.goddard@btinternet.com Mary Hallett ww1@barnsgreen.com .John Barnard and Herbert Cooper In September devastating news arrived for two more local families. In Christ’s Hospital Martha Dickerson received the news that her brother, John Barnard had been killed in action. Martha would have received the standard letter from the Army Records office advising her of John’s death, and another letter confirming where he was buried (Dernancourt Communal Cemetery Extension). At Itchingfield School, just a few weeks later, the Headmaster Charles Cooper received the news that his eldest son, Herbert, had been killed in action. Herbert had been at the front in France for just five weeks. The heartbreakingly stoic entries made by Charles Cooper in the Itchingfield School Log Book in the days following Herbert’s death. (Image courtesy WSRO) We do not know if Miss Cooper’s indisposition was illness or shock at the news of her brother’s death, but the Cooper’s were a close family - all the children had followed their parents into the teaching profession and Charles Cooper’s entry in the log book speaks volumes of the devastation such news had on these families, not just initially but for years to come. There were no words to comfort the bereaved, the reports in the Parish Magazine and the West Sussex County Times offered the only consolation available: We deeply regret to record the death of Lieut, Herbert Cooper, 7th Middx Regt., killed in action on Sept 17th. We offer our deep sympathy with the family here at Itchingfield. It may be some consolation to them to know that they have given their nearest and dearest for King and Country in the time of her greatest need. ITCHINGFIELD PARISH MAGAZINE . . . In a most sympathetic letter to his widow, Colonel King says “He died a very gallant death leading his platoon to the assault. He was killed instantly and so can have suffered no pain.. .” WEST SUSSEX COUNTY TIMES The Somme Remembered. The series of Great War battles collectively known as “The Somme” lasted from 1st July 1916 until the 18th of November of the same year, and resulted in some 420,000 allied soldiers dead, missing or wounded for just a 6 mile advance of the front line. On the first day of the offensive, well known as the bloodiest day in the British Army’s history, over 19,000 men died but what is perhaps less well known is that, for the first time ever, documentary movie cameras captured much of the action. 18

Barns Greens War project continued….. is year, Imperial War Museums (IWM) and members of the First World War Centenary Partnership are working together to show the UNESCO listed film The Battle of the Somme, to audiences across the world. Shot and screened in 1916, it was the first feature length documentary about war and changed the way both cinema and film was perceived by the public. In the year of its release around 20 million people, almost half the population of Britain at the time, watched The Battle of the Somme many hoping to see the image of a loved-one, or friend captured on film. One hundred years later, this unique film from IWM’s collection, is being shown to commemorate the anniversary of the Battle of the Somme. The Barns Greens War project has been fortunate enough to have been accepted as a member of the First World War Centenary Partnership and the film will form part of this years “Barns Green Remembers” exhibition in the Village Hall on Saturday 12th November. Look out for details in the October and November editions of the Big Mag. ''New Venture Bible Study’’ will resume on 27th Sept, 10:30/11:30am, in Slinfold Chapel. Every 2nd and 4th Tuesday of the month we meet for good discussions, fellowship and prayer. We welcome any one with Christian faith or seeking to find out more about Jesus Christ. Village Hall - Toilet and Entrance area upgrade project. The latest project run by the village hall committee has been completed. The hall was closed from 28th July to August 13th to allow for a complete renovation of the front entrance and the toilets. This work has been completed and the result is amazing. My thanks goes to the contractors involved in the project, great work team. Just remember the toilets have been swapped around to give the ladies more room. Careful not to walk into the wrong one!
