Publisher’s Note / Keeping a Journal

It has been a little more than two months since my last trip to the Philippines. For some of you, it could be just a few short weeks, months, or perhaps even five to ten years since your last trip home. It truly is remarkable how rapid the country is developing with newly constructed highways, new high-rise commercial and residential buildings, to new restaurants and hotels. Whether it is Makati, Ortigas, or Bonifacio Global City, Metro-Manila truly has progressed to become an international destination for both business executives and tourists—this was especially evident on the flight to Manila from Los Angeles. Beside me on the plane was a young American businessman traveling with his wife and daughter. Before the flight departed, he asked me, “Going to the Philippines for business or vacation?” I said, “A mixture of both, that’s the beauty of the Philippines.” Nodding in agreement, he said, “Absolutely, that’s why my family and I love the Philippines.” Later adding that, “I’ve been everywhere throughout the World and Southeast Asia, but my wife and I really love it there.” The young man later went on to talk about his franchise businesses, real estate holdings, 18

and even a chicken farm. He also said that he wants his daughter to get her MBA in the Philippines. As you will learn in our October and November issue on education, studying in the Philippines has become quite an appealing option for foreigners. From this chance conversation, I suddenly realized that the Philippines is not just becoming, but has already become this remarkable hub for business opportunities. And this is exactly why we have prepared this investment issue for you. After all, what would be better than having you, the Balikbayans investing in your home country and earning from it? It is not just your remittance that allows so many people to eat, to get an education, or health care, but it provides the country with jobs. And what comes from your real estate holdings or franchising of a business, it keeps the economy going— you drive this economy. In this issue, we give you Century Properties Prime Real Estate. In this 14-page feature, you will understand why Century Properties is truly Taking the Lead in Reshaping Manila. Further, our Editor-in-Chief breaks down the key drivers of economic growth in order to understand how the Philippines

GDP will reach $1.05 Trillion in 2029 according to esteemed economist, Rajiv Biswas of IHS Singapore. For those of you looking for ways to expedite or sustain your retirement (or simply just want to become wealthier), we have prepared a 10-page report on whether franchising is thriving and if it is really for you. You will not just find economic development in the central business districts of the Philippines. Now more than ever, the provinces are waking up as well. Our Executive Editor of the Asian Journal Newspapers writes about one such town in Pangasinan, a town called Binalonan. Read his piece, “Sleepy No More, Binalonan’s Turn to Soar and Shine.” Binalonan happens to be my hometown. To say the least, it is quite inspiring to read about my small town’s economic progress. If perhaps real estate or franchising is not for you, then look to your hometown as a place for your investment. Because after all, the things we do should matter. Roger L. Manila’s newfound economic power is changing the face of the city. The country’s uninterrupted growth for the last several years has brought a positive shift to people’s lifestyles, from retail, leisure, health care, to choice of real estate. It is not surprising that branded properties have come to dominate the luxury real estate scene as a result, lending a global and cosmopolitan vibe to the city. Bringing rare designer properties to the Philippines is the leading developer Century Properties, the only firm to seal partnerships with as much as eight major global brands in its desire to bring only the best values to its different real estate projects. The strategy has been very successful that Century is currently completing 9 projects with some of the world’s biggest brands. These are not limited to fashion and home labels but also design, architecture, property, and other global players. “These collaborations ultimately redound to great consumer benefits: a unique product and a unique experience,” the developer pointed out. “The branded residence also inspires pride of ownership. For most Asians one’s home is a testament to one’s success and achievements. The home, the address, defines the person.” In the city of Makati, the firm’s limited collection of the following branded

02 residences are located in Century City – the integrated center of premium residences, office, retail and commercial high rises within the city’s financial district. Milano Residences by Versace Home In December 2015, Century Properties is targeting to complete the Milano Residences, a 53-story tower with interiors designed by Versace Home. The building’s architecture will complement Versace Home’s elegant interior design aesthetic, which will be evident in the grand lobby, hallways, lounge, library, pool garden and spa. Versace Home accessories and furniture are available as upgrade options to Milano unit owners. Milano has more than 300 units with 1 to 3-bedroom configurations. Prime units in various sizes and layouts include The Penthouses, The Townhouses and Italian-

inspired units called The Loggias that feature private plunge pools – a first in a Makati condo. Versace SpA President Mr. Santo Versace said: “I celebrate along with you the project created with Century Properties, of which I am particularly proud: Milano Residences. It is a project that will allow future inhabitants to really know and live the Versace lifestyle. Versace is not just one of the most famous fashion brands in the world, but is also universally recognized as the brand that since its birth has succeeded in combining fashion and art in an indissoluble way, which had never been done before. Art, beauty and charm belong to the Versace DNA. Over a decade of expertise in Interior Design projects has allowed us to gain a position of leadership among the fashion brands in the Home department and create extraordinarily successful projects all over the world.” JUNE / JULY 2015

Trump Tower Philippines A first in the Philippines and Southeast Asia, Trump Tower has reached the 31st storey of construction as of the first quarter of 2015. Unit sizes range from 60 square meters for a Suite to over 400 square meters for a Penthouse. These come with the finest fixtures and finishes, including five-fixture master baths with his and hers sinks, fourfixture guest baths, and separate dressing areas or walk-in closets. Residents will be serviced with a world-class concierge team. Trump Tower has a grand lobby and amenity floors with a fine dining restaurant; and a library, business center, lounge and theater. The tower’s upper floors will offer spectacular views of Makati while residents enjoy the spa, fitness center and yoga studio, as well as the juice bar, sun deck and lap pool overlooking the 29th and 30th floors. In January, 94 percent of the tower’s 250 units have been pre-sold, making this one of the most expensive and successful projects in the history of the country. The project’s success is comparable to the tremendous record sales of other Trump developments worldwide, such as Trump International Hotel & Tower, Waikiki, Trump International Hotel & Tower Chicago, Trump International Hotel, Las Vegas and many others. “We would like to congratulate our great partners, Century Properties Group, on this very exciting accomplishment. Together, we have done something very special and this fantastic property will set the standard of luxury and quality in the Philippines and beyond,” said Donald J. Trump, Chairman & President of the Trump Organization. “Putting a Trump Tower in the Philippines is Century’s contribution to making Metro Manila an international destination. We are overwhelmed by the response from the market to the Trump Brand and are grateful, as this now affords the city one of the most luxurious buildings in the world, comparable to the city centers of New York, Hong Kong and Singapore,” said Century Properties Chairman and CEO Jose E.B. Antonio.

04 Century Spire by Armani Casa In 2014, Giorgio Armani and Century Properties sealed a partnership whose objective is to create the interiors of the luxury amenities of Century Spire, an extraordinary building designed by the renowned architecture firm Studio Daniel Libeskind. The Armani Casa Interior Design Studio has provided complete interior design services to private individuals and property developers since 2003 under the artistic direction of Giorgio Armani. For Century Spire, it is responsible for the design of common spaces and amenities, which include the grand lobby, library, swimming pool with juice bar and relaxation area, as well as the spa, gym, and fitness areas. In addition, on request, residential apartments can be delivered with full Armani/Casa interior design, finish and furniture as a special commission. Commenting on the project, Giorgio

Armani, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Armani Group, said: “I am very happy with this collaboration, and I think that the combination of my vision with that of Daniel Libeskind will lead to the creation of a truly special place, characterized by elegance and a unique charm.” The unique architecture of the tower created by Studio Daniel Libeskind was a key inspiration for the project’s interior design. The building’s structural boldness, with its signature feature – a peak that seems to open up into a blossom – and the dynamism of the oblique lines that characterize the facade have been important points of reference in the development of the concept for its interior. Century Spire units are divided into eight different types, from suites to penthouses. The largest and most prestigious apartments are located on the tower’s top floors.

02 The Pebble, Acqua Private Residences’ Central Amenity

Acqua Private Residences Urban community embraces the beauty of the tropical rainforest. What is a residential Eden? Leading Philippine real estate firm Century Properties has the answer in Acqua Private Residences in Mandaluyong City—a rare urban address infused with all that we love about the tropical rainforest: the peaceful sight and soothing sound of cascading waterfalls, abundant greenery, and invigorating lagoon pools. The 6-tower development is located on a 2.4-hectare property that is accessible via the Makati-Mandaluyong and Estrella-Pantaleon bridges, which both connect the cities of Mandaluyong and Makati. “Acqua is a piece of paradise in the

center of the metropolis, made even more exciting as residents will get such exclusive amenities as their own Country Club by the Water called the Pebble, and a Riverwalk Promenade with shops and cafes,” the developer said. Acqua’s masterplan allots twice the size of its land area to open space, amenities and greenery, spread throughout the buildings, roof gardens and amenity areas. Its unique riverside location provides a picture of how its surrounding environs will be revitalized in the coming years. “We aim to contribute to the gentrification of an old industrial area into a bustling center of activity, as well as help realize the grand vision for the rebirth of the Pasig River and fill it with riverside attractions,” Century said.

Named after world-famous waterfalls True to its tropical rainforest theme, Acqua’s residential towers are named after the world’s most majestic waterfalls. Niagara, the first tower, is complete

and undergoing unit turnover. The second tower scheduled for turnover this year is Sutherland, named after one of New Zealand’s tallest waterfalls. The third tower Dettifoss, named after Iceland’s most powerful waterfall, recently completed its construction floors together with Acqua’s fourth tower. For the fourth and fifth towers, Century Properties chose Africa’s Livingstone Falls and Brazil’s Iguazu Falls as inspirations, respectively. The company also worked with two worldrenowned brands to offer highlydistinctive interior designed residential properties: MissoniHome for Acqua Livingstone and yoo inspired by Starck (founded by John Hitchcox and Philippe Starck) for Acqua Iguazu. Meanwhile, Acqua’s sixth tower will introduce a unique touch to the “home away from home” concept in partnership with another brand. The project, which ushers Century Properties’ evolution from a top residential developer to a leading well-diversified property company, is scheduled to be launched very soon. JUNE / JULY 2015

Branded residences by Missoni Home and yoo The first residential building in the world that will bear the creative and colorful mark of MissoniHome will rise in Metro Manila through the planned 52-storey Acqua Livingstone. The tower will immerse residents in the rich and colorful experience of the MissoniHome-designed space, which is not available elsewhere. Its design philosophy will be fully articulated at the Canopy, a split-level complex that will house a function room, business center, a gym and spa, an amphitheater, DJ booth, dance floor, pool and barbeque facilities. An organically-shaped wire mesh tree that winds its way up will connect the Canopy’s two levels—providing a unique al fresco dining area and observation decks from where one can enjoy fantastic views of the Makati, Manila, and Mandaluyong skylines. The design firm called yoo, cofounded by Philippe Starck and John Hitchcox, brings its touch of the extraordinary to the Acqua Iguazu tower through the Cielo, an exclusive sky deck that will have an iconic giant orb that looks like a sun during the day and a moon at night. At this multi-level area one can also find the Wonder Bar and Library, which serve as an indoor/outdoor library during the day and a cocktail bar at night; a posh dining area from which the reflection of a suspended moon and Starck’s favorite lines from Le Petit Prince add a touch whimsy to the space; a private theater that evokes the old world charm of cinema’s golden age; and multi-level waterfalls that gather into a pool. Yoo has likewise designed the Acqua Iguazu lobby to be as breathtaking: the long narrow room is framed by three funnels and highlighted with a sculptural representation of the moon and a line from Le Petit Prince to echo that of the Cielo. Both brands also offer optional interior designed units for their respective towers upon request. Meanwhile, the construction of Acqua’s Pebble amenity is in full swing. Century added: “We are delighted to introduce a residential landmark that embraces the modern lifestyle and yet infuses the reinvigorating experience of being surrounded by a majestic tropical rainforest. Acqua is truly a life-enhancing project that will elevate residents to a state of bliss, and make them feel nurtured and refreshed, without ever having to leave the city.” 03 The Acqua Iguazu Nature Showroom Unit 04 The Acqua Iguazu Pool at The Cielo Amenity Deck 05 The Cielo Amenity Deck at Acqua Iguazu Tower 06 The Acqua Livingstone Gym 07 Beloved French designer Philippe Starck and British developer John Hitchcox, founders of yoo inspired by Starck, the interior design studio behind Acqua Iguazu’s unique aesthetics.

quezon city, re-imagined

Nurturing, holistic and hyperamenitized, The Residences at Commonwealth by Century welcomes you right at home.

Century Properties is bringing its 29year heritage of innovation for the first time to Metro Manila’s largest city with the Residences at Commonwealth. An eight-tower mid-rise development, Commonwealth in Quezon City integrates a world-class design, larger unit cuts with extended balconies, and distinctive, beyond-the-usual amenities that encourage residents to engage in healthy pursuits. “It’s a topnotch package for a premium home that has never been offered before in this part of the metropolis,” said the company’s Chief Operating Officer Marco R. Antonio. The first tower is complete and undergoing unit turnover, while the construction floors were topped off recently for the second, third and fourth Commonwealth buildings. “The project name is the company’s stamp of assurance that homeowners will enjoy the same mark of innovation, and the same tradition of lifeenhancing residential experiences in this development,” he added. “Commonwealth by Century seeks to surpass the standards set for residential projects within this category by introducing pioneering features and amenities that will exceed what the market has been accustomed to.” The property is situated in Don Antonio Drive in Commonwealth, the location of the fifth station of the proposed MRT 7. Surrounded by schools, places of worship, medical and commercial establishments, Commonwealth by Century is ideal for working professionals and startup families, who desire independence but 30

01 also want to be situated near friends and family. Responsive design Each of the eight towers will bear a distinct cranked design to optimize sunlight and allow the circulation of cool air. As the property is situated on a sloping landscape, the towers’ heights will ascend as the terrain drops. The tallest towers will top off at 22 floors; the lowest, at 11 storeys. Select balconies will have private gardens that stagger up the buildings’ facades. Within each building, public green scapes will come in the form of Box Gardens, Vertical Gardens and Roof Gardens. Balconies follow a chevron layout

that extends the unit owner’s private space and provides more room to accommodate guests. Beyond the usual clubhouse Aside from the unique structural design of its buildings, Commonwealth by Century also brings the property developer’s concept of the hyperamenitized community that Century Properties has become known for. “While planning the Commonwealth amenities we took a step back and reflected on what kind of public spaces will truly matter to our residents. We know there is true wealth in selfdiscovery and self-enrichment, so we introduced brand new amenities that mirror the progression of the individual – from childhood to adulthood – and its

The Commonwealth Clubhouse will cater to toddlers and kids with its day care and learning centers, an arts and crafts room, and a music studio. It will also house a THX cinema on the second floor while a fully-equipped cooking studio and kitchen is planned on the third floor. The roof deck of the clubhouse will house a fitness center that includes gym facilities, an outdoor yoga and Pilates garden, a salon and spa and a multipurpose hall. Right smack in the middle of the eight towers are landscaped parks consisting

of pockets of gardens for reflection and Zen meditation as well as waterscape parks. For the little tykes, three apple-shaped tree houses, called The Orchard, provide additional stimulation. One is a “cored apple” filled with a fun web of ropes for climbing; another is a “sliced apple” which houses a mini-observatory for stargazing; and the last one is a “peeled apple” with a fun, spiral slide. Health enthusiasts will have the best of both the indoors and outdoors with a fitness center, an athletic bootcamp, and badminton and basketball courts. Safe and secure community Security and safety features will be provided through a round the clock security force around the property.

There will be perimeter fences with well-planned lighting systems around the development, CCTV system for important security points, smoke detectors, fire alarm and automatic fire sprinklers for all areas, pressurized fire exit stars, and 100 percent generator back-up for all common areas and amenities. There will also be trained professionals who will attend to the community’s medical needs. “On top of the basics, we offer great living spaces and added values that make community life worth the investment, from opportunities for social interaction and active lifestyles to a lot of peaceful and quiet moments. We are pulling out all the stops to bring the Century brand to Quezon City but at attainable terms,” Antonio said. JUNE / JULY 2015

summer solstice Century Properties sets the benchmark in residential resort living with two Azure developments.

Azure Urban Resort Residences, Paranaque City Most of us enjoy the glorious season of summer for only four months a year. But to the residents of Azure Urban Resort Residences, life in a tropical paradise is a year-round pleasurable experience. The 6-hectare property in Parañaque City offers not only a unique, fullsized man-made beach. It also gives residents the best of both worlds: urban conveniences and a total resort-style living experience. Azure’s nine residential buildings are named after famous beach destinations around the world: from Rio (after Rio de Janeiro in Brazil) to Santorini (of Greece), St. Tropez (in the French Riviera) and Positano (of Italy), all the way to the Philippines’ very own beach paradise, Boracay. To balance off the concrete and organic elements within the Azure development, Century devoted 80 percent of the entire property to open space, including outdoor amenities, greenery, and roads. The man-made beach is located at the center of the property. Around it are amenities that complement the urban resort experience: lush gardens, a beach volleyball area, multi-purpose court, a central bar by the pool, and facilities inside the modern clubhouse that include a movie/THX room, function rooms, a restaurant, children’s play area, and a spa. Aside from the beach, the centerpiece of Azure is the Paris Beach Club, designed by the international style icon, Paris Hilton. This clubhouse amenity integrates world class dining, relaxation, 32

and entertainment facilities into one seamless, tropical-inspired experience. Hilton carefully planned the look, feel, and resort vibe of the building, inspired by her experiences at many of the world’s best beach getaways. The result is a stunning, highly personal blend of color, décor, and activity that reflect the fun nature of Paris Hilton as well as the modern tastes of today’s sunloving residents. The Residences at Azure North, San Fernando, Pampanga In the eight-hectare Resort Residences at Azure North, Century continues the line of one of its most celebrated projects in Pampanga. Its six-hectare beach resort-themed community in Paranaque is the only one in the country to have a man-made beach and a beach club designed by international style icon and businesswoman Paris Hilton. “We’re bringing the same scale—in terms of creativity and innovation—that we had with our first Azure project to Pampanga. Just as our man-made beach and Paris Beach Club are like no other, the amenities and features of our beach

in Azure North will be something unprecedented,” the firm’s Chief Operating Officer Marco R. Antonio said. Azure North’s design concept draws inspiration from the stratified rock formations, picturesque beach coves and waters of Palawan, one of the Philippines’ last unadulterated frontiers. The development’s centerpiece is a beach oasis with a wave and lap pool, a children’s pool, slides and cascading waterfalls, a pool bar, the Azure North Island for special private parties, a multi-pupose event space and of course, a multi-level beach club. The seven residential towers that form the residential component of Azure North likewise evoke Palawan’s rocky outcrops that spring organically from the water and are topped with lush, verdant greenery. Over 75 percent of the residential units and penthouses will enjoy majestic views of the beautiful beach area. Oblique balconies and verandas, meanwhile, provide additional outdoor living space. Making Azure North a fullyintegrated sustainable mixed-use development is an extensive food and beverage, retail, and office component. Azure North’s strategic location in San Fernando near Robinsons Starmills and SM Pampanga makes it highly accessible to several provincial destinations: Tarlac, Pangasinan, Bataan, Zambales, and Bulacan. The city of San Fernado is the seat of Pampanga’s provincial government. It is also the regional center of Central Luzon and several of the region’s government offices can be found there. The Economy

The trillion dollar philippine economy Preface According to IHS Singapore Asia-Pacific Chief Economist, Rajiv Biswas, the Philippines’ Gross Domestic Product will reach $1.05 Trillion by 2029. WRITER Raphael John Carbonell Oriel IllustratorS Kenno Samulde Godwin Gasacao

On April 21, 2015 at the World Economic Forum on East Asia 2015 in Jakarta, Indonesia, IHS Singapore Asia-Pacific Chief Economis, Rajiv Biswas announced that the Philippines’ gross domestic product will reach $1.05 Trillion by 2029. Biswas predicts the total GDP of the Philippines will rise from $310 billion this year to $500 billion by 2020 ignited by the rapid growth of the Information TechnologyBusiness Process Outsourcing Industry and overseas remittances. The nation’s per capita GDP is also eyed to double from $3,000 in 2015 to $6,000 by 2024 which should mean a drastic improvement in the quality of life of the general population. Biswas notes, “These significant increases in per capita GDP will create one of ASEAN’s largest consumer markets of the future, as the middle-class rapidly expands over time. This will help to attract foreign direct investment (FDI) by multinationals into the Philippines manufacturing and services industry.” Biswas later added that “The Philippines economy has the capacity for robust long-term economic growth to average around 5.5% per year over the 2016 to 2020 time horizon.” 36

THE KEY DRIVERS OF ECONOMIC GROWTH THE IT-BPO INDUSTRY

REMITTANCE

The persistent growth in the ITBPO sector and the strong, consistent inflow of remittances from Filipino workers abroad will continue to drive the Philippine economy. The export revenue from the IT-BPO sector has more than doubled between 2008 and 2014, reaching an estimated $13.3 billion. As a result of the vast collection of university-educated workers and a remarkable command of the Englishlanguage skill of the workforce boosts the IT-BPO sector. From 2008 to 2014, the export revenue reached an impressive $18 billion which now employs well over 1 million people. By next year, the IT-BPO Industry is expected to add another 300,000 employees. With the rapid growth of this industry, it is driving economic development in a myriad of cities across the nation—Manila and Cebu are now among the world’s leading IT-BPO centers.

Philippine remittance continues to cushion the economy. Overseas Filipino workers and Balikbayans sent a record $26.9 billion in 2014 up 6.2% in 2013. Remittance provided a key source of strength for the Philippines. 35% of annual remittance is estimated to go directly into residential property investment which enabled the robust expansion of the residential construction sector in both major Philippine cities and developing new cities. This momentum is widely anticipated to remain strong within the next few years notes Mr. Biswas.

CONSTRUCTION In 2014, construction grew by an estimated 10% and is expected to continue to expand further this year and this is directly correlated to the rise of the IT-BPO Industry as described by Biswas, “The rapid growth of the ITBPO industry is also creating positive transmission effects for the rest of the economy, including for the commercial property sector, with rapid growth in demand for commercial floor space, underpinning the development of existing and new office parks in urban centers.”

INFRASTRUCTRE Biswas cited the need for infrastructure investment. The country must create high quality transportation—improving roads, ports, highways, airports, power generation and transmission—all things essential and interconnected for boosting economic growth. JOBS According to government data, roughly 28% of the population still lives in poverty. Both poverty and unemployment issues are glaring problems that need to be addressed. Currently, there are over 10 million people unemployed. “Tackling urban crime must also be another key priority, in order to make the Philippines a more attractive environment for foreign investment and tourism,” Biswas said. Biswas further notes, “Therefore, creating a diversified economy with key growth industries that can generate

Foreign mining firms are lining up to tap the precious metals that virtually remain untapped. The Philippine mining sector is estimated to be a $1.4 trillion industry. However, bureaucracy and environmental debates have consumed the untapped mining industry and land rights issues. However, because of recent governmental and business reforms, this sleeping giant may finally be awakening this year. Chief market strategist, Jonathan Ravelas of the Banco de Oro Unibank forecasts mining as one of the country’s next boom sectors. But it is highly important that the Philippines receives the lion’s share of revenues from the country’s treasures before they go offshore. Signed in 2012, Executive Order 79 is pending Congressional approval. The framework of the order will provide the country with more royalties. In addition to generating revenues, the executive order would appease the environmental calm as it clarifies which parts of the Philippines is closed to mining and enforces all the environmental laws and rules. EASE OF DOING BUSINESS According to Mr. Biswas, the most important driver to achieve the sustained, long-term economic growth will be the Philippines ability to make manufacturing more competitive and this will largely be a result of the country improving the ease of doing business. In order to utilize and spike both foreign and domestic investment, a vast improvement of the business climate must be accomplished. The Philippines, currently ranked 95 on the World Bank’s 38

Ease of Doing Business rankings, is quite low globally. However, this should drastically improve in the near future. “While the Aquino administration made efforts to improve this ranking, there is still a great deal of work to do to improve the overall competitiveness of the Philippines to attract large inflows of FDI,” Biswas said. With attracting foreign and domestic investment, it would boost employment and punctuate the country as a serious player in ASEAN. In a press conference in Manila on April 14, 2015, the Department of Finance, Department of Trade and Industry, the National Competitveness Council (NCC), the Department of the Interior and Local Government, and 9 other institutions announced the launch and unveiled reforms to simplify the process of starting a business to 6 steps and 8 days, down from the excruciating 16 steps and 34 days. Finance Secretary Cesar V. Purisima welcomed the reforms saying, “We are proud to show how it’s clearly more fun, and way easier, to do business in the Philippines. This is a whole-of-government approach with 11 other partners — I thank all of them for their hard work in this continuous process of making the country a better place to do business in. Together, we are making the business of realizing dreams in the Philippines ever easier.” The package of reforms involving starting a business included merging several steps together to create singlewindow applications powered by more interconnectivity across IT systems of different agencies, the removal of several outdated procedures, and the introduction of enhanced one-stop-shop procedures in local government units. These changes involved coordination and partnership across numerous government agencies such as the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), BIR, SSS, Pag-IBIG, PhilHealth, and local

government unit Quezon City. The net effect is that the time it will take to incorporate new corporations, partnerships, and non-stock corporations at the Securities and Exchange Commission will be remarkably reduced. Meanwhile, payroll-related payments to Pag-IBIG and PhilHealth will be digitalized and made available online for companies employing at least 10 employees. The reduction of the number of payments from 36 to 13 per year will save businesses and entrepreneurs a lot of time and money. Trade and Industry Secretary and NCC Co-Chair Gregory L. Domingo said, “We continue to be encouraged by reforms that will make our business registration faster, simpler, more efficient, and more transparent. DTI is committed to sustaining the momentum to achieve improved competitiveness and encourage inclusive growth. This ties in nicely as well with our role to boost the development of micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs). These reforms will motivate SMEs to incorporate when they see the need to do so, as they start or run their businesses.” In discussing the simplified processes, NCC Co-Chairman Guillermo M. Luz said, “These game changers are effective beginning this month in the head offices of the partner agencies and Quezon City and will soon spread across the country. These two sets of reforms are part of a broader game plan that the Philippines, already recognized as the most improved economy in major competitiveness reports over the last four years, will be implementing as we continue to introduce changes and improvements.” A full brief of the reforms, as well as the corresponding legal documents supporting the new policies, can be found on the websites of all partner agencies in the Ease of Doing Business initiative in the country.

2015 Franchising Industry —Thriving or not? Preface Almost three decades after the franchising business format started in the Philippines, how far has the franchising industry reached? WRITER Maria Nimfa Nadtja H. Villaver Illustrator Kenno Samulde

From one fast food chain company in 1981, there are now over 1,000 franchise concepts in the country. According to World Franchising Council, the Philippines ranked fifth in terms of the number of franchisees, fourth biggest in terms of jobs generate by franchising, and 11th in terms of brands that can be franchised. Moreover, the Philippines is considered the franchising hub of Asia with the influx of foreign brands and the number of businesses that have set up shop. No wonder franchising has become a major contributor in the country’s economy.

Fast Food Investing in fast food chains requires a lot of cash but it is a very lucrative business. Selling well established & high quality product is an edge. Franchisees no longer need to spend on marketing because the brand speaks for itself. Majority of the fast food businesses are already known worldwide and have been profitable and solvent for many years already. In the Philippines, McDonald’s opened its doors to franchising to Filipino entrepreneurs in 1985, and has 44

Food & Beverage Industry Food businesses are ninety-five percent profitable than any other kind of businesses, according to Hubpages’ website. Why? People love to eat. Whether it’s finger foods, heavy meal or dessert, surely it will satisfy one’s appetite. “Food is a steady burner, always in demand and around 60% of Franchise buyers purchase a Food Franchise and probably there won’t be any change in the position of the Food Franchises,” Filipino International Franchise Association founder Rudolf Kotik said in an interview with Balikbayan Magazine.

since expanded its network to over 150 franchised restaurants with more than 65 franchisees. The franchise cost of investment ranges from 25 to 35 million pesos depending on the size of the site, building, location and land cost. Another popular fast food franchise business is Jollibee, which only started as an ice cream parlor in 1975 offering hot meals and sandwiches. Now, Jollibee has been on the top 100 corporations in the Philippines for the more than two decades. The franchise cost of the Philippines based fast food franchise is around 15 million pesos to 30 million pesos.

Food Cart Food carts have become the preferred type of franchising business for Filipinos because of its strong earning potential and low capitalization. People can start their own business with an investment as low as one hundred thousand pesos. The lower capital needed to set up a food cart compared to a full service restaurant concept, opens new opportunities for aspiring entrepreneurs to start their own business. Compared to the franchises located in malls, the one hundred thousand pesos franchises are most popular in the street corners of the metro, also called “kanto carts.”

Beauty, Health & Wellness Industry Trending businesses in 2015 include beauty and wellness salons, spas and specialty salons, offering nail jewelry, 3D nail art, nail care, nail extensions, nail art, body massage, waxing, threading and specialty facials. Spas will continue to flourish as more and more Filipinos can afford to be pampered. Bulging pockets will result to bulging tummies which is good for those in the gym business. Moreover, foreign fashion brands will continue to come because of the country’s growing prosperity. Health related franchises are also in demand and increasing in percentage, like drugstores and laboratories account for more or less 8% of franchises in the country. Health and organic food concepts will find a growing niche too. So, which industry is best to invest in? Before venturing into a franchise business, one must first identify the growth engines of the Philippine franchising sector.

01 Business Process Outsourcing Industry (Continues to expand in secondary cities) 02 Continued growth of remittances from overseas Filipinos 03 Increased need for agriculture sustainability 04 Rise of retirement resorts 05 Tourism boom requiring new services and workers The more important thing to consider when investing on a franchise is not its cost but its support system. Franchising is being in business for yourself but not by yourself. The secret to the success of a franchise is the support of the franchisor. This is why a franchisor collects an initial fee (or franchise fee) and royalty so that it can continue to support its franchisee. -Philippine Franchise Association

CHECKLIST BEFORE BUYING A FRANCHISE

01

Make a list of franchise concepts that you would like to consider.

02

Make the list based on your budget, interest and inclination.

03

If you already have a location in mind, carefully consider if the franchise concept you want will be appropriate for your location.

04

Know what questions to ask to the franchisor such as:

01 The franchisor’s support program.

02 The total investment package; the franchise fee is just part of the total cost of the franchise.

03 The ROI 04 The number of outlets:

Both company owned and franchised and where these are located. (If these are concentrated in only one area and your location is far from the said area, ask how you can be supported and supplied by the franchisor)

Insights & Analysis

WRITER Professor Enrique Soriano

So the big question that comes right after the point when an individual retires is, “What am I going to do now with my time?” Believe me, there are retirees who have been wondering what are they going to do with the overwhelmingly plentiful time that they have – something which they are not so used to, considering the fact that they have been conditioned for many long years to work for long hours. So, retirement can be really relaxing, but if they could not contain their eagerness to take action on something they believe in or something they are very passionate about, life would be heavily boring. Another concern of retirees, especially those who worked as office based employees for many long years is that how else could they be able to have sustainable income channels aside from the pension they are getting and the savings they have in the bank? They become worried about their future finances. They know that they have to do something in order to prevent the dreaded possibility of losing all that they have got earlier than what they have expected.

The age of retirement in the Philippines is at 65, but one can choose early retirement by the age of 50. In other countries, some retirees who have made enough or even more than enough money to live the kind of lifestyles they want are retiring at age 35 already! When we co founded the Philippine Retirement Inc, a private led consortium of the country’s biggest conglomerates in 2008, I discovered that the global retirement age was at 39 years! Retirees are not only interested with R&R anymore. A growing number among them is into investing in the business of franchising. The global retirement phenomenon is at a boom, and it seems that the retirees are finding their ways to save their future by remaining active and business oriented.

Franchising is the Next Best Option In these scenarios, retirees are considering the idea of getting a franchise, because in this way, they could be more productive and profitable, yet through an easier method, because all that there is to know about the business say, a fast food restaurant or a convenience store are prepared already by the franchisee. They just need to assimilate and follow. We know that stepping into business is a huge leap and it requires a lot of risks upfront, but through franchising, everything is laid out already from branding, training, operations, production, supply etc. Retirees having their money from retirement lump sum and pension, including their opportunity to loan from banks, have what it takes to get the business franchise of their choice.

The Benefits and Responsibilities of Franchise Ownership A franchise enables you, the investor or franchisee, to operate a business. You pay a franchise fee and you get a format or system developed by the company (franchisor), the right to use the franchisor’s name for a limited time, and assistance. For example, the franchisor may provide you with help in finding a location for your outlet; initial training and an operating manual; and advice on management, marketing, or personnel. The franchisor may provide support through periodic newsletters, a website, or scheduled workshops or seminars. Buying a franchise may reduce your investment risk by enabling you to associate with an established company. But you may be required to give up significant control over your business while you take on contractual obligations with the franchisor. Is a Convenience Store a Good Franchise? For instance, there’s a big potential in the convenience store industry that is growing faster than other types of retail store. Some of the brands that dispersed all over Metro Manila and the progressive regions are 7-11, Mini-Stop and the newest entrant Family Mart. In the provinces especially in the Visayas, we see a sprinkling of local brands led by Munsterific and Quikmart Convenience stores. Dominated by 7-11 with more than a thousand branches, these 3 continue to own 80% market share of the entire 24/7 convenience store chains and continues to offer investment opportunities for Filipinos looking to build and develop their own business. The trend now for Convenience stores to sustain its revenue stream is by introducing a Combo-Store—the integration of the convenience store with the fast food shop. Mini-Stop pioneered on this concept and this format goes

beyond traditional convenience store products and services by providing original fast foods made in an in-store kitchen space. Franchising a Bakeshop Franchising has really gone big in the Philippines. A personal favorite and one of the Cinderella success stories in local entrepreneurship is Julie’s Bakeshop, which was started by Mrs. Julie Gandionco when she was 47 years old. Now run by her son, Joseph “Opep” Gandionco as President and CEO, Julie’s Franchise Corporation has expanded and has started its overseas ventures by putting up its first bakeshop in Jakarta. Indonesia. Since 1999, Julie’s Franchise Corporation has garnered a string of Franchise Excellence Awards for consistently high achievements of growth and development in all aspects of franchise operations. With more than 30 years of experience in the bakeshop industry and over 500 Julie’s Bakeshop ( JBS) operated by about 130 franchisees all over the Philippine archipelago, it is the Philippine’s strongest bakeshop brand and the country’s largest neighborhood bakeshop chain. A Franchise Success Story Originally from Loon, Bohol and an engineer by profession, Anthony Mesina was a former overseas Filipino worker (OFW ) who worked in China for eight years. He and his wife Imelda, who was also an OFW based in Hong Kong, wanted to go back home to start their own business and looked into franchising as an option. They chose Julie’s Bakeshop franchise and are now reaping success in the business. They recently received the Philippine Franchising Association’s prestigious award for Regional Franchisee of the Year — Northern Luzon category. Thus, based on the Julie’s Bakeshop success story, it is obvious that age doesn’t matter in starting a business and growing it profitably. JUNE / JULY 2015

Investigating the emergence of a specific mestiza/mestizo whiteness that facilitates relations between the Philippines and Western nations, this book examines the ways in which the construction of a particular form of Philippine whiteness serves to deploy positions of exclusion, privilege and solidarity. Through Filipino, Filipino-Australian, and Filipino-American experiences, the author explores the operation of whiteness, showing how a mixed-race identity becomes the means through which racialised privileges, authority and power are embodied in the Philippine context, and examines the ways in which colonial and imperial technologies of the past frame contemporary practices such as skin-bleaching, the use of different languages, discourses of bilateral relations, secularism, development, and the movement of Filipino, Australian and American bodies between and within nations. Drawing on key ideas expressed in critical race and whiteness studies, together with the theoretical concepts of somatechnics, biopolitics and governmentality, The Somatechnics of Whiteness and Race sheds light on the impact of colonial and imperial histories on contemporary international relations, and calls for a ‘queering’ or resignification of whiteness, which acknowledges permutations of whiteness fostered within national boundaries, as well as through various nation-state alliances and fractures. As such, it will appeal to scholars of cultural studies, sociology and politics with interests in whiteness, postcolonialism and race.

Nothing hurts more than a preempted young love. The Bread of Salt tells a story of a fourteen year old lad whose brief moment of incivility laid waste to a clandestine affection. PLACES ON THE RISE

SLEEPY NO MORE —Binalonan’s Turn to Soar and Shine WRITER Momar G. Visaya photographer Ding Carreon

Located about 200 kilometers north of Manila is the town of Binalonan, one of 44 municipalities of the province of Pangasinan. That’s roughly a threehour drive using the old North Luzon Expressway – or much less – using the newly-inaugurated Tarlac-PangasinanLa Union Expressway (TPLEX). Next town over is its more famous neighbor, the municipality of Manaoag, whose fame can be credited to the Miraculous Shrine of Our Lady of Manaoag. Many pilgrims from Manila and other neighboring provinces in the north schedule regular visits to the shrine. For some devout Catholics, the pilgrimage to Manaoag extends to Binalonan, home to the centuries-old Santo Nino Catholic Church, a landmark of Catholic faith and Spanish colonial legacy. In the nearby barrio of Santa Catalina is Mount Paldingan Stations of the Cross, also a famous pilgrimage site during the Lenten season for devotees. Through the years, the town often described as sleepy, has produced successful sons and daughters who call Binalonan as their hometown. Preeminent Filipino-American writer Carlos Bulosan, famous for his seminal book America is in the Heart, is a proud son. The town has erected a memorial and named a street after him just north of the municipal hall and the town market. 72

Bulosan was born in a farming village known then as Mangusmana (now Mangcasuy). He was among the young Filipino migrant workers who arrived in the United States in 1930. On Sept. 11 last year, 58 years after his death in 1956, Binalonan commemorated the writer’s death anniversary as Carlos Bulosan Day. To this day, the writer continues to inspire his townmates in Binalonan. “Of course, we are very proud of him. He is our hero and he is an inspiration to the people,” Teresita Dacpano, head of information and publication office of the University of Eastern Pangasinan (UEP), a local government-run institution told the Inquirer in an interview. Dacpano said like in the previous commemorations, literary contests on Bulosan among the town’s high school and elementary students were held. “We are doing this to show to the people that he is really a hero worth remembering,” she said. Binalonan is also the hometown of Evangelina de la Cruz Macaraeg Macapagal, mother and spouse of two former presidents - Gloria MacapagalArroyo and Diosdado Macapagal, respectively. This magazine’s publisher, Roger Lagmay Oriel is also a proud son of Binalonan. From being a fifth class municipality

in 2001, Binalonan officials worked hard to make the town into a first class municipality. This means increased business investments, improvements in urban planning and zoning and various income-generating measures. The town has 8,400 hectares of land and is composed of 24 barangays. Its population as of 2010 is 52,832. Many people pass by the town on their way to Baguio City or nearby Manaoag. Among its neighboring towns are Pozorrubio and Sison on the north, San Manuel and Asingan on the east, Urdaneta on the south and Laoac on the west. Binalonan is also becoming one of Pangasinan’s top producers of rice grains and mangoes, making it more progressive. Officials have also been working tirelessly to make Binalonan as an educational center in the province. Incumbent mayor Ramon “MonMon” Guico III has been working on a

strategy and vision in mind to transform Binalonan into a “university town,” an idea which has come into fruition with the town council declaring the municipality as such. Anchored around the project is the University of Eastern Pangasinan (UEP), promulgated in 2005 and officially opened in 2007, and is the first academic institution operated by a municipality. The P60-million-building is a product of Guico’s dissertation when he pursued his doctorate in public management at the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila in 2005. He presented this to then president Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, former Speaker of the House Jose de Venecia and other town officials. Soon enough, a local ordinance establishing UEP was approved on Dec. 9, 2005, through a resolution by the Sangguniang Panlalawigan of Pangasinan. “The whole town is like one big campus,” says Guico. “The center of

activity is the UEP, which is supported by various facilities for students such as our gymnasium, basketball and tennis courts for sports, our garden plaza for conducive gathering and studies, a central transport terminal, a library and community eCenter. All our projects are aligned towards the university town project. Binalonan is an educational haven and gateway for commerce in Eastern Pangasinan.” Further supporting the university town platform is World Citi Colleges (WCC) Aeronautical and Technological College (ATC), which Guico put up on a personal capacity when he was only 29 years old. A licensed pilot and instructor, Guico at a very young age already dreamt of putting his hometown on the Philippine tourism map. “It all started with a hobby. Even when I was young, I was already interested in planes, jets, all kinds of aircrafts. I turned that hobby into a profession right after I graduated from the University of the Philippines,” Mayor Guico, who flew his first aircraft when he was only 23 years old, told the Philippine Star. Thus, in 2005, Guico made Binalonan one of Pangasinan’s tourist drawers with the establishment of an airstrip that served as headquarters to the WCC Aviation Company and the new campus of the WCC Aeronautical School since 2008 after enrolment necessitated for a bigger and more complete facility. So next time you find yourself on a road trip up north, maybe you can squeeze in a few hours to visit this oncesleepy town. Try out the local delicacies, visit a church or two and who knows, maybe even charter a plane ride to see Hundred Islands or the Banaue Rice Terraces from a different perspective: a thousand feet up in the air. The GATEWAy TO THE BICOL REGION

WRITER Maria Nimfa Nadtja H. Villaver photographers Godwin Gasacao

If you’re one of those travelers who’s looking beyond the beauty of nature, sand and sea, Daet should be next on your must-go-to destination list. Considered as the gateway to Bicol Region, Daet is 350 kilometres from Manila and can be reached seven to eight hours by land travel. It is a first class municipality and the commercial and government center of Camarines Norte. The name Daet was derived from the Bikol word “dai-daitan” which means “close to each other.” Daet also originated from an ancient Bicol term, “daet” which according to the First Bicol-Spanish Dictionary, Vocabolario dela Lengua Vicol, by Fray Marcos de Lisboa, means “to make friend” or “to be reconciled” According to the Cities and Municipalities Competitiveness Index, an annual ranking of Philippine cities and municipalities developed by the 76

National Competitiveness Council through the Regional Competitiveness Committees (RCCs) with the assistance of the United States Agency for the International Development, Daet ranked #1 in the 2014 Most Competitive Town in the Philippines; it also ranked #18 in economic dynamism and #31 in government efficiency. A Town Rich in History In 1571, a Spanish conquistador Juan de Salcedo arrived at Bicol Region in quest for gold. He then discovered that Daet was already a thriving settlement and noted that the houses were clustered together for reason of safety and protection. On June 1583, a Franciscan Order confirmed the founding of Doctrinas including Daet. Years later, Daet played a significant role not just in the history of Bicol but in the country.

First Jose Rizal Monument One of Daet’s pride is the first Jose Rizal Monument in the Philippines. Erected by voluntary contributions of the people of Camarines Norte led by Lt. Col. Ildefonso Alegre and Lt. Col. Antonio Sanz of the revolutionary army, the monument was unveiled on December 30, 1898. The National Historical Institute in Manila has recently elevated the status of the first-ever Rizal Monument in Daet, Camarines Norte into a National Monument. The Rizal Monument indicates a distinctive design – a threetiered stone pylon with its square base supporting a triangle in two stages. Monument of Martyrs of Camarines Norte This monument was built through the efforts of loving relatives and friends of the martyrs. It was unveiled in 1996 in honor of the “katipuneros” and the great sons of Daet an d neighboring towns who offered their lives to the country during the 1898 Daet Revolt. Pabico Ancenstral Home Built in 1918, this ancestral home boasts a grand staircase with Rococostyle carvings still intact after so many years. The house has been passed on to four generations. It currently serves as an art gallery and archives which is a rich source of knowledge where the young generation can draw inspiration. It is a favorite venue for Tertulla de Daet, an annual event which brings back the memories of Daet through music, fashion and literature. 78

THE UNSPOILED PARADISE OF CAM NORTE —Calaguas Preface If Camarines Sur boasts the internationally known Caramoan group of islands, Camarines Norte takes pride in the unspoiled Calaguas. Dubbed as the “concealed white beach of Bicol”, Calaguas Island is gaining popularity from tourists, especially from backpackers who would want to have a weekend getaway near the Metro. The jump off point to Calaguas Island is Daet, Camarines Norte which is just six to eight hours away from Manila if you’re travelling by land. If you prefer a speedy travel, you can take the 45-minute flight from Manila to Naga, Camarines Sur and just take a van going to Paracle or Vinzons, Camarines Sur; which would take about 4 hours only. Going to the island Calaguas adventure starts with the 2-hour boat ride from the fishport going directly to the island. Boats going to the island can either be rented at Vinzons or Paracle. It is best to leave early morning when the water is calmer and to avoid the low tide at the mangrove-fringed river approaching the sea. It would also be best to visit around January to June when the waves are not that rough. Compared to other boat rides, one must brace themselves for a notable drenching adventure within two hours because the route to Calaguas includes crossing a part of the Pacific Ocean. This means expect bigger and unpredictable waves. Before leaving the port, boat men will secure traveler’s belongings by packing it inside plastic bags and store it in the boat hulls. It’s also a must to have a waterproof pouch to store valuables and to protect gadgets from water splash during the boat ride. When choosing where to seat at the boat, choose the front seat. It’s the most exciting one not just because you’ll get to have a good view of the big waves but also it will also give a thrill of getting soaked. Two hours maybe a bit lengthy but when you arrived at the island it’s all worth it.

TRAVEL

DISCOVERY

Experiencing Pristine Paradise The pristine beach and turquoise sea will greet travelers when they arrive at the island. Mahabang Buhangin (Long Beach) or “Halabang Baybay” (local dialect) is a kilometer long stretch of powdery white sand beach facing the breathtaking Pacific Ocean. Don’t get mistaken, it’s not Boracay. It’s the unspoiled white sand beaches of Calaguas Island. The beach has a number of visitors so one can enjoy beachcombing or just pick any spot to relax. Beach sports are also accessible such as volleyball, frisbee and skim boarding. There are also rock formations that are not just nice to take picture of but travelers can climb and experience. The crystal clear waters are inviting for snorkeling, scuba diving, kayaking and more. Loving the Sunset and Sunrise One of the most anticipated time of the day in the island is the picturesque sunset. The view of the sand, sea and sun is truly captivating. But the perfect view lasts only a few minutes, so travelers must make sure to have their cameras ready. Calaguas adventure will not be complete if one will not experience trekking. There are several trails traversing the hilltop. The best time would be early morning to get a spectacular view of the sunrise and the whole island. 90

Disconnecting from the world As people say, sometimes you just need to disconnect and enjoy your own company. Calaguas is the perfect destination to utterly unwind and forget the demanding life back in the Metro. The island is serene since it’s not yet as popular as the other islands in the country. Normally, there is no mobile phone signal in the camping area. But one can walk his way to the edge of the island cove or climbed at the mountain to get a well needed signal if necessary. There are no established hotel and resort accommodations yet in the island. But the experience of beach camping is perhaps what attracts travelers. There are modest comfort rooms in most campsites. The island is certainly not yet commercialized. But for those who would miss the nightlife in the metro, various tour operators and camp sites on the area organize parties. Some

camp sites have acoustic nights, team building activities, and even fire dance entertainment. Unfamiliar to many, Calaguas is truly another up and coming destination in the country. With its fine white sand similar to Boracay and crystal clear water, no doubt more and more tourists will be captivated. Though developments are on its way, hopefully Calaguas can still preserve its pristine paradise.

Age Is But A Number Preface True; but there’s more to aging than attitude. Dr. Kaycee Reyes of Luminisce Clinic explains that understanding the physical transformation in aging help lessen the cynicism adhered to it—let alone fight it. Familiarizing with the common causes of skin aging and how they can be treated as well as engaging in healthy habits is a step closer to fighting aging all together. WRITER Mary May Portez IllustratorS Kenno Samulde Godwin Gasacao

Fact Skin starts to age from the moment we are born and occurs at different rates. For Asians or people with darker skin, pigmentary changes are more prominent, like tanning and PIH (Post Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation). Caucasians or people with lighter skin, on the other hand, are more prone to wrinkles. AGE SPOTS Age spots and crows feet are both effects of aging. Age spots usually starts in our early 20’s and appear mostly in malar areas more exposed to the sun. These are tan-colored, superficial pigmented lesions on the skin that resemble freckles. 92

CELL-BASED THERAPY: BEATING SPORTS INJURIES AND ARTHRITIS IN A REGENERATIVE WAY

S

ummer is a great time to exercise or play your favorite sports. Sports enthusiasts and athletes put their bodies on the line all in the name of the game. Along with stretching those muscles, sports injuries may result, such as sprains, tendonitis, tears, ligament injuries, tennis and golfer’s elbow. Soft tissue injuries may take a long time to heal, and athletes can’t afford to be away from the game for a long period of time. The good news is that an innovative set of medical therapies called Regenerative Medicine has emerged to provide noninvasive and non-surgical ways of treating various ailments and conditions. REPAIR AND HEAL Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is blood plasma that has been enriched with platelets. When injury occurs, platelets are among the first repair cells that travel to the injury site and produce blood clots to prevent excessive bleeding.

and occurs after the age of 40. Patients are frequently advised to undergo knee replacement surgery. Aside from the lengthy recovery period, success of the operation may be uncertain due to titanium implants. GIVE A FACE-LIFT Recently, PRP therapy has also been utilized in aesthetics. With PRP therapy, the growth factors aid in replenishing the skin volume and restoring the skin elasticity. SAFE. EFFECTIVE. REASONABLE PRICE. “It helped a lot. I was cured. I was able to walk. I was even able to dance. So, I would recommend it to anyone who needs it. In fact, I have a friend who I already told it to, and I think he’s getting excited about it.” – Selerina Solidum, 76 years old, former arthritis patient In PRP therapy, a small amount of a patient’s blood is extracted and spun to develop a concentration of platelets and growth factors naturally found in the body. Then, the PRP is injected into the damaged area. In addition to stimulating the body to heal itself, the platelet ‘graft’ serves as a biological scaffold that provides an optimal condition towards speedy recovery.

Platelets are rich in many different growth factors that help attract other repair cells or “worker cells” that allow normal healing to take place. Our tendons and ligaments have poor blood supply, which leads to an incomplete or much delayed healing response. Every injection of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) helps bring these natural healing cells to an area where blood supply is deficient, thereby allowing the body to repair the tissue faster. IMPROVE QUALITY OF LIFE One must be ready to face the reality of aging. The most common degenerative disease is arthritis, which commonly affects the knee “As much as possible, we don’t want our patients to be subjected to knee replacement because one of the problems they’ll encounter in the future is quality of life. Say, at the age of 50, you’re healthy but you can’t walk smoothly. With PRP, our goal is to improve the quality of life,” shares Dr. Eric Yalung, MD, Regenestem Manila Medical Director.

The success of the PRP therapy depends on the process and the growth factors achieved. Regenestem Manila uses a TriCell kit, a specialized machine used exclusively by the clinic. PRP therapy is relatively cheaper compared to surgical operations that costs thousands of dollars. Sessions vary depending on the damaged area. For sports injuries, it usually takes about 3-4 monthly sessions.

“My blood sugar improved. I don’t feel the pain. I tend to be more relaxed. I tend to be more active now. Life really is worth living for.” – Jesus Jacobe, Former arthritis patient
