GETTING STARTED

The Real Working Holiday Guide

Win A 5 Day Awesome Whitsundays Tour p49 Plan, plan, and plan some more...

Some people’s biggest mistake is arriving in Australia on a working holiday when really you could go on a holiday visa to see if you like it. You could then hop over to NZ, Fiji, Bali or Singapore and then return on a working holiday visa. If you’re aim is to work whilst in Australia, then be aware that working holiday visas are like gold dust, and you may require sponsorship if you want to stay on longer.

Work Advice

If you have a working holiday visa it means that you can work for an employer for 6 months. In this time they can decide if they want to sponsor you. In other words, you have 6 months to prove yourself and bag a sponsorship.

you can legally work. Not all fully qualified professionals will be able to roll straight into work so do your homework and thank us later.

Research

Generally you should spend some time researching which certificates you might need to work in various industries. For example you’ll need an RSA to work in a bar - but what is an RSA? We’ll get into that in more detail later but basically a certificate that means you can serve alcohol and work in a bar. Also work on your confidence and be prepared to sell yourself. Be aware that walking into a bar and handing over your CV won’t always work, however walking in and offering to do a trial shift for free might. Be prepared to take on any job and always be opened minded.

If you’re going to be looking for temp work in hospitality or tourism keep in mind everyone else is too. You should consider doing some temp work in bars, cafe’s, or maybe taking some diving courses or doing anything else that might make your CV stand out.

Working Holiday “the key to success is hidden in the name of the visa”

If you have a trade under your belt such as being a decorator, carpenter, electrician, or plumber, then pack your paperwork or at least make sure you have digital copies to show potential employers. Think about courses and what you might need to secure work. Australia is the land of certification. Everything must be above board and you’ll need to make sure

Finally seriously consider working in a regional area first and check the list of what jobs you can do to qualify for your three months regional work. This will then mean you can head to the

6

www.bbmlive.com

Consider working outside the major cities. This will also give you a chance to see the real Australia and have an experience that you will never forget.

city and you’ll be eligible to work for 21 months, rather than nine. Another option to take could be to break up an East Coast trip with regional work. You could work your way up the coast doing various random jobs that qualify you for your second year visa. Also remember, you don’t have to pick fruit, other options are available that don’t require such intense labour.

Travel

Have fun and see Australia! Seriously, most people don’t see a quarter of the things they set out to in the first place. Consider group tours and breaking up East coast trips with day trips to the Great Barrier Reef, surf camps, skydiving and self drive trips. Group trips are also a great way of making new friends. Take our advice and take advantage of booking as much as you can directly. Don’t tell the travel agents but you can save a packet by looking for deals and promotions that the tour operators are running directly.

How to save money

Sign up to newsletters and take advantage of deals. By signing up to promotional newsletters with travel agents in the UK you’ll be the first to know about flash sales for flights. To get deals in Australia you can sign up to our newsletter via www.bbmlive.com. Here you’ll find tonnes of fantastic tour companies and promotions with as much as up to 60% off and the great news is with most of them you can book now and travel up to nine months later.

Accommodation

A pressing question is always where to stay. After you’ve considered the above points you’ll need to think about which city, town, or type of accommodation you want to stay in. Hostels are a great place to meet like minded travellers who are in your position, so spending your first week in a hostel is a great way to meet potential room mates and get acquainted with the city you’re potentially going to be living in. If you’re not up for the hostel thing then consider using Air BnB, Flat Mate Finder or remember that some hostels do have private rooms.

apartments that are really competitive in price. If you’ve decided to go over and get work straight away then check out some of the flat share websites and of course Gumtree. They do have it in Aus and it’s pretty much the same as it is in the UK.

How to meet fellow travellers or new friends

An obvious place to meet people is at a hostel but that’s not to say that all hostels are full of people who want to mingle so here’s a few ideas that will help you meet some new fellow travellers or like minded locals who share similar passions.

1 If you’re up for drinks then wherever you are in Aus keep an eye out for backpackers club nights or local students nights. These nights will remind you of those sun filled holidays on the Costa Del Sol or Kavos but if you’re up for a laugh and looking to fall in love in 24 hours these will suit you.

2 For those of you looking for more culture,

we highly recommend you experience Australia’s bar and food scene. Aussies love top quality food and throughout all the major cities you’ll find bespoke ‘pop up’ style restaurants and bars that are always welcoming to international visitors. Top tip; speak to the bar staff about things to do around the city, as in most cities, the bar staff will likely be people like yourself and have a good idea of what’s happening in the area you are.

3 Fitness classes are another great place

to meet people. Keep an eye out for yoga classes, group personal training sessions and other local activities.

4 Small group tours are one of the best ways

to meet people in the same boat as yourself and you don’t need to book these before you arrive and you can often save a packet by booking direct. You’ll find loads of these throughout our website or when you arrive you could speak to your accommodation manager, local travel agent or if you are short of time then of course, speak to your travel agent before you leave the country.

There are also some great modern self service www.bbmlive.com

ASHLEY LESZCZUK GIVES US THE LOW DOWN ON GETTING SETTLED IN SYDNEY We talk to expat Ashley Leszczuk about what it’s like living in Sydney and what gems he’s found around the city since moving from the United Kingdom. Occupation: Underwriter, Crisis Management Current Location: Darlinghurst, Sydney Originally from: Chelmsford, Essex What was your first perception of Sydney when you moved there: Actually how small it is as a city, which is great for getting around and exploring suburbs, far easier than London or New York for example where I have lived and worked before. Favourite restaurant in Sydney: Tough, tough question. There are so many great restaurants around the suburbs, and especially where I live, it is easy to not go back twice as there is so much choice and I have never had a bad experience. One place that I do love and go back to again

and again, for drinks and a good time also (I had my 30th birthday there) is Ziggi’s in Chippendale. Ziggi creates Aus-raeli food, a mix of Australian and Israeli cuisine. Best place to hang out on the weekend: I don’t really have a “best place” as there are so many places to explore. From wandering around Darlinghurst / Surry Hills / Potts Point, to catching the ferry to Manly beach, to a lazy Sunday on the Opal card maximum $2.50 spend, which basically involves wandering down to Circular Quay, picking a wharf at random, picking a destination at random, getting off the other side and finding somewhere to eat. Your own mini adventure on a Sunday afternoon. Best secret hangout for those who don’t want to run with the crowd: Any of the small bars; Mojo Record Store, Frankie’s Pizza, The Barber Shop, Ramblin’ Rascals, the list can be quite endless. Best BYOB in Sydney: If you can get a table, Bar Reggio in Stanley Street, Surry Hills. Great, cheap Italian, which is always packed to the rafters, so be prepared to queue for a small amount of time. Best area to live in and why: I love Darlinghurst. There are laneways with secret cafes, there are secret bars, great pubs, a 20-minute walk to the city, a 20-minute walk to Elizabeth Bay parklands, bus to Bondi in 30 minutes. It really is central enough for a lot of things. You have Surry Hills on the doorstep, Paddington, Moore Park for footy and all things sport-related. Best place to have a weekend away from Sydney in: Melbourne. It is literally New York of Australia. Great bars, great cafes, great vibe, a great city. 5 Things you’ll love about Sydney

One of the most iconic cities in the world, it’s no wonder people mistake Sydney for Australia’s capital. Often newcomers’ first port of call, there’s a lot that can keep you here, but here are the five best things about Sydney that you really shouldn’t miss.

The Restaurants

Whether you insist on five-star dining or require nothing more than a burger in a bar, Sydney’s got it all. The restaurants in Sydney have beckoned the finest chefs from around the world to make Sydney their home and delight locals and visitors with exceptional cuisine. Due to location, there’s a melting pot of Asian, African, European, American and British flavours, with Sydney hospitality being the cherry on top.

The Landmarks

Even if you’ve never stepped foot in Sydney, you’ll have seen the iconic structures that have become symbols of the city. The Sydney Opera House with its shell roof and the Sydney Harbour Bridge that joins the north to the south are known the world over – whether from New Year’s Eve photos, the 2000 Summer Olympics, or Finding Nemo…

The Coastal Suburbs

Without a doubt the most popular suburb in Sydney is Bondi Beach. Beckoning surfers and

yogis in the morning, the sweeping beach is internationally recognised for being full of beautiful people topping up their glowing tans. A coastal walk from Bondi takes you to another beachside suburb, Coogee, which boasts hotels, water sports and golden sands. In the north of Sydney is Manly, yet another suburb with a beach on its doorstep. Is it any wonder Sydneysiders spend so much time outside?

The Small Bar Scene

From experimental cocktails to secret rooms and inventive décor, the small bars of Sydney make evenings out an experience you’d call back home about. The creativity and imagination is second to none without sacrificing on quality drinks. So whether you prefer wine, whiskey, craft beer or cocktails, you’ll have an awesome time guaranteed.

The Countryside

The city may have you in the palm of its hand, but the surrounding countryside of New South Wales has plenty to offer just moments from the hustle and bustle. From the magical haze of the Blue Mountains and the towering Three Sisters to the waterways and Aboriginal heritage sites of Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park, you can imagine a time before Sydney even existed. EXPAT INTERVIEW:

Sandy Dhaliwal Reveals Her Favourite Things About Moving To Melbourne Expat, Sandy Dhaliwal, talks to BBM about her new life in Melbourne and the amazing places she’s already discovered since moving from London. Occupation: Content Writer Current Location: Melbourne Originally from: London What was your first perception of Melbourne when you moved there? I may be biased but I think London is the greatest city in the world, but Melbourne would definitely come in as a close second. Mainly because it has all the trappings of London, but with added beaches and sunshine! There is a wonderfully rich and diverse culture here that encompasses food, festivals, music, theatre, fashion, art and more. I’m literally never stuck for things to do. Favourite restaurant in Melbourne: The Banff in St Kilda for its rustic Italian menu and cosy cottage setting. The pizzas are absolutely delicious. I often struggle when trying to order as the menu will leave you feeling spoilt for choice with their creative menu. It’s also a great place for cheap eats as The Banff is definitely kind on your pocket. Best place to hang out on the weekend: I love the Laneway bars; favourites include Section 8 for its quirky graffittied decor and outdoor setting, Japanese themed Robot Bar, and Cherry Bar on AC/DC for live music. I tend to head to the laneways before my favourite nearby indie nights: Black Night Crash at Ding Dong Lounge or Razzmatazz Indie Disco at Exmouth Hotel. Your favourite place to go for breakfast: For its quirky and contemporary menu of seasonal fruit and vegetable dishes, as well as creative twists on traditional favourites, I would highly 12

www.bbmlive.com

recommend Pope Joan in Brunswick East. The owner/chef even grows his own produce out the back! Best bar for midweek drinks with friends: E Fifty Five on Elizabeth Street, which is an internet cafe crossed with a basement lounge bar. It’s got retro décor an in-house DJ and is also an art space Best BYOB in Melbourne: Tucked away in the Eastern suburbs, Forest Hill to be exact, is the Shangri La Inn, a restaurant specialising in Malaysian and Chinese cuisine. The family-run restaurant is probably the best food you’ll eat outside of Malaysia. Best area to live in and why: I love Fitzroy as it reminds me of trendy Shoreditch in East London. Best pub for lunch: The Newmarket Hotel in St Kilda, a trendy eatery with striking contemporary interior and a laid back atmosphere, specialising in rustic Californian and Latin cuisine. But don’t just go there for food, the drinks menu is amazing too. Best place to have a weekend away from Melbourne in: You can’t visit Melbourne without doing the Great Ocean Road, home to the famous 12 Apostles. Booking Accommodation Online Thanks to the digital revolution it’s now easier than ever to find a bed for a night, a week, six months or forever. However with so much choice, it can be a lot of effort. To save hours of scrolling through search engines, we’ve put together a collection of some of our favourite accommodation booking sites to get you going.

Hostels, Hotels & Apartments

Most synonymous with the travelling backpacker, hostels are the number one go-to for short-term lodging for a number of reasons. To save time you may want to go directly to our very own bbmlive.com. We have a basic listing of some of our favourite hostels and accommodation around the country, however if you’re looking for an all-in-one viewing and booking option check out websites such as hostelbookers.com and hostelworld.com. For hotels wotif.com, booking.com are two of the best booking platforms for last minute or advance bookings. Also, keep an eye out for deals on undisclosed hotels at a discounted price, as you could bag a 4 or 5 star hotel for a fraction of the price. Moving onto apartments and a new trend that is sweeping the world, airbnb.com and homeaway. com are at the forefront of providing a booking service that creates a secure platform for yourself and homeowners to rent out your properties. The websites hold your deposit and rent until you and the flat owner have confirmed arrival and departure.

House Swap

If you’re looking for home comforts on the other side of the world but you’re worried about paying rent or your mortgage while on your travels, you can swap your house for someone else’s. You don’t even have to swap at the same time. If a member of lovehomeswap.com stays in your 16

www.bbmlive.com

house while you’re away, you can even earn points which can later be used to holiday in a house completely free. Other house swap websites include guardianhomeexchange.co.uk and aussiehouseswap.com.au.

Semi-Permanent Accommodation

For anyone looking to stay in one location for at least six months, whether to work solidly for the same employer or have a base for family and friends to visit, long-term accommodation is the logical choice. With many rental properties coming with a minimum sixmonth lease, you can have somewhere to call home while still experiencing the beauty of Australia.

House Shares

With accommodation eating a predominant chunk out of your wage, you’ll want to save as many cents and dollars as possible. FlatmateFinders.com.au lists hundreds of homes, as well as people that are also looking for a house share, based on your chosen city. The website is free to sign up to and contact 35 people but if you’re successful in your search, there is a finder’s fee. Those of you from the UK will be pleased to know Gumtree.com.au is here to help as well local sites such as au.easyroommate.com, domain.com.au and furnishedproperty.com.au, who list fully furnished share accommodation, apartments and student digs.

Permanent

If you’re migrating permanently to Australia for work or family then you may well be looking for a home of your own. Whether you’re buying or looking for a long term rental there are two main websites in Australia that are worth a visit, as mentioned above domain. com.au is a great place to start and then you also have realestate.com.au. Both websites cover the entire country and most estate agents will have their properties listed.

want to work behind a bar in oz? You’ll need an rsa for that. As it’s not required in the UK, the Responsible Service of Alcohol (RSA) can come as a bit of a shock to visitors to Australia. If you’re yet to even find out what it is or have some unanswered questions about your own, here’s all you need to know about the RSA.

What is the RSA?

RSA is the Responsible Service of Alcohol, a oneday course required by law for anyone working in licensed premises where alcohol is served. Those that do the RSA are taught about legal responsibilities, harm minimisation, spotting fake IDs and recognising signs of intoxication. What it doesn’t teach you is how to pour a pint or make a Margarita.

Who is it for?

The RSA course is relevant to anyone who has contact with patrons on licensed premises, such as bar staff, courtesy and security staff, waiters, concierge, front door and reception staff, so whether you are working in a hotel, pub, club or restaurant, you will require an RSA.

How do I prove that I have my RSA? If you have completed the RSA in New South Wales, you will be given an Interim Certificate

20

www.bbmlive.com

from the training organisation (valid for 90 days), which will allow you to work for a short period of time following your completion of the course. Within the 90 days, you will need to apply for your Photo Competency Card to continue working. Other states provide paper certificates.

Does the RSA expire?

In NSW, the Photo Competency Cards expire five years after completing your first course. To continue working, you must renew your training by attending/completing an approved course every five years to keep it current.

Does the RSA guarantee I’ll get a job? No. Nothing and no one can guarantee you a job. The RSA makes you legal and therefore employable to serve alcohol. If you’re new to Australia and need some practical experience working behind a bar, you can take the Bar Skills and Cocktail Skills Course with BarMax, which will make you even more employable. You can now do the Cocktail Skills Course with 30% off when you mention BBMAUS, making it $84

instead of $120.

Visit www.barmax.com.au or call 1300 139 233 to book your RSA now!

How Much Will You Pay For A Home in Australia? The similarities between Australia and the UK are staggering, but when it comes to property, how do the two nations compare, and what can you expect to pay for your mortgage?

Property market

According to the most recent estimates from Australian Property Monitors, the median house price in Sydney has hit $812,000 (£449,652), more than 17 per cent growth over the year to June 2014. This was followed closely by Melbourne which grew by 10 per cent to $608,000 (£358,278) over the same period. From a whole market perspective, real estate prices are expected to continue to rise over the 2014 period, albeit at a slower expected growth rate of 4 per cent compared to around 10 per cent growth in 2013 (January figures from RP Data). Despite the rapid increases, research from Fitch Ratings ‘Mortgage and Housing Outlook’ found that property here is still more affordable than in the UK in relation to average house price to income ratios.

How do Australian interest rates compare to the UK?

Bank of England governor Mark Carney recently told the UK press that interest rates - which have remained at 0.5% since 2009 - are edging towards a rise. When? Probably in early 2015. Meanwhile, in Australia, the Reserve Bank of Australia has officially left the cash rate on hold at 2.5% for over 24

www.bbmlive.com

a year, a record low for Australia. In addition, the four major banks of Australia recently made the decision to drop the five-year fixed rate to 4.99% with some experts predicting this to drop even further as the banks continue their price war. In fact, as a non-resident, you may be able to lock in your five-year rate for even less than 4.99% with some lenders. You’ll find that the best discounts aren’t advertised - they’re all by negotiation. Eligibility for a professional discount depends on how you present your situation to the lender. As always, the key to borrowing as an expat is to apply with the right lender.

Your deposit

As a rough guide, you will need 5% of the purchase price to pay for stamp duty (tax), legal fees and incidentals. You will also need to make up the difference between the mortgage and the purchase price.

VISA INFO

Tips For Immigrating To Australia Migration Agents, Interstaff, provide some simple and handy immigration tips for Australia. Points Basis

Your experience, skills and background are all measured in points that count towards the final decision on your visa, therefore having all of the requirements and evidence of such will give you a higher chance of approval.

Get Your References

If you’re applying for a skilled job or for the Skilled Independent Visa, having references from previous employers will be advantageous if not necessary to your application and you should have these in order before starting your application.

Adding A Spouse

You will need to provide evidence of your relationship if you are attaching a spouse to your application, including photographs, bank statements, a declaration with details of your relationship and a declaration from others confirming your relationship. You will need this evidence ready before lodging your application. Visit interstaff.com for more info and tips for successful immigration.

Get Your Qualifications

As many jobs also rely on relevant qualifications and certificates, so too will the visa. Make sure you have the qualifications you need to prove you can do the job successfully in Australia, and if not, take a course and achieve your qualification before applying.

Take The English Test

If you’re not from an English-speaking country or English isn’t your first language, you will need to take an English test. You must take the test and achieve your International English Language Test Score before applying for your visa.

Give Yourself Time

Many visas can take up to 12 months to be approved, so give yourself enough time before you need to be in the country.

Matched Betting: a god send to cash-strapped travellers If you’re a complete novice when it comes to betting, but need cash fast, you’ll love matched betting: like your usual place-a-bet game, but more of a breeze and a pretty much guaranteed win, it’s a Godsend to cash-strapped travellers that can’t wait to go on their next adventure.

Matched betting uses those free bet offers found

on most betting websites (play £10, get a free £20 bet) and involves placing a bet on one result and 28

5 essential tips for matched betting

From fix the odds When placing your lay bet, make sure the bet has been accepted (matched) on the lay bookie’s system before confirming this with Fix The Odds – if it has not (or only partially), the Fix The Odds system can deal with that for you too!

2

Typically, smaller free bets will mean a smaller outlay to do the offer – but also a smaller return.

When the system offers you bets in a list, you can sort that list by profit or date of the match – fastest is not always most profitable!

4

Offers with a number of rollover requirements are often listed as having a smaller profit margin as Fix The Odds has to base these returns on you having to complete the entire rollover requirement. However, if your first free bet loses with the bookie you can pocket a much larger profit than listed on the offer!

If you get a special offer through from a bookie with another free bet (these are called Reload offers) contact Fix The Odds’ support by Live Help or email. Fix The Odds often creates custom offers for people with Reloads if they ask!

The Need To Know Facts Of Aussie Tax If you’ve paid tax at any time while in Australia, you need to submit a tax return. You could also be entitled to a tax refund. To help you with the ins and outs of it all, here are our top tips on Australian tax. Claiming Income Tax

When you start paying tax at the resident rate after six months, you may be able to claim a refund on the tax you paid as a non-resident. This is money that you’re owed and entitled to, so it’s important not to leave it. To find out if your circumstances entitle you to a tax refund, you can speak to a tax agent.

Claiming Your Superannuation

In Australia, superannuation is a retirement fund, like a state pension. A percentage of your salary is put aside as superannuation and can’t be touched until you retire – or, until you leave Australia. If you’re not staying in Australia, you can apply to release your superannuation as soon as you leave Australia and your visa has expired.

Claiming The Medicare Levy

Some foreign citizens are exempt from paying the Medicare levy, the taxpayer-funded health scheme for Australians, for which 2% is paid from taxable income. If you’re exempt from paying the levy, you need an exemption letter, which will increase your tax refund. Not sure if you’re exempt? Ask a tax agent about the Medicare levy exemption. 30

www.bbmlive.com

Include Your Bank Interest

Make sure you include your bank account interest in your annual tax return to ensure your refund is not delayed.

Claiming Work Expenses

Minimise your tax or increase your tax refund by claiming work expenses. These should be directly related to your job while in Australia, so what you can claim back on depends on what job you are doing. Expenses include any tools, equipment, work uniform or courses fully paid for by you, not your employer. You should remember to keep your receipts for any expenses you want to claim.

Find Out Your Tax Residency

How much your tax refund will amount to determines on whether you’re a resident or nonresident. If you’ve been in Australia for less than six months on a temporary visa, you will pay the non-resident tax rate. If you’ve worked six months or more, you’ll pay the resident tax rate. The tax rate for non-residents is higher, but this is why claiming it back is so important!

Submitting Your Tax Return

You need to submit a tax return if you’ve paid tax while you’ve been in Australia. The Australian financial year runs from 1st July – 30th June and you must submit your tax return by 31st October.

For more information on the Australian tax system, visit www.bbmlive.com/tax-advice

also ask the bank to set up your super when you open an account with them or you can join the super account set up by the employer. If you do opt for the company’s super account and lose the paperwork don’t fret, simply contact the ATO and they can help locate your super.

From 1st July 2013, employers were required by law to contribute a minimum of 9.25% of an employee’s ordinary time earning into a superannuation fund, which is called a ‘Superannuation Guarantee’. The detail that is really super is that this is an additional payment borne by your employer; it is not deducted from your gross pay. There are also plans to increase the proportion to 12% by 2019, which is nice. The payment is based on your pre-tax earnings so if you earned $500 before tax for the month you should be entitled to an additional $46.25. However, do not be alarmed if your superannuation balance looks a little skinny as 15% is taxed by the Australian Tax Office (ATO) and funds constantly charge administration and insurance fees which can amount to $5-10 per week. To be eligible, the employee must be over 18, working over 30 hours a week and earning over $450 per month from one employer, so it would be beneficial to hold a single job

instead of several. As far as assurances, go the Australian Government have that covered too as from 1st January 2014 employers were obligated to pay default contributions to an authorised MySuper product, with the most well known being AustralianSuper and AustSafe Super. This means that losing your payment due to a suspect provider is now far less a risk. That all sounds grand and all for Australian citizens yet for short-term visitors such as those on Working Holiday Visas the reality is a little different. Of course, if you meet the criteria then you can expect the contribution. Remember, as long as you earn over $450 a month from one employer you will be entitled. The arrangement is for any worker; whether permanent or casual, resident or nonresident for tax purposes (that would be you by the way). Arranging your superannuation is relatively straightforward. You can set up your own super account, which is the simpler choice if you intend on taking on temporary work or travelling while in Australia. You could

on

FREE MONEY.

Working holiday makers are allowed to withdraw their superannuation either when their visa expires or whenever they leave permanently. This is known as the Departing Australia Superannuation Payment or DASP. If you do not claim your super within six months of leaving Australia, or within six months of the cancellation or expiry of your visa, the ATO will claim the money and it could be a while to organise its release from their tight grasp, especially from abroad. Still, the money is yours, but if you do end up having trouble working out how to claim it, then do not worry. If you have already claimed your taxback then the same company, and even the very same tax professional should be able to assist you in claiming your superannuation. All you need to do is provide your membership details, fill in some forms and the tax professionals will do the hard work while you wait for the payment to arrive. Most charge a flat fee of around 15% for the service and you should receive your super within 28 days of the Australian Tax Office receiving your application.

SUPERANNUATION EXPLAINED

For anyone being paid in cash, it may seem great to have your wages in your hands to hold and then spend, but you will be missing out on superannuation. You read that correctly: for all those lovely, crisp banknotes in your pocket, you will be losing out

Opening Up An Australian Bank Account Opening an Australian bank account is essential if you’re looking for temporary work while travelling, especially as most employers will pay your wages via electronic fund transfers.

If you’re on an Australian working holiday visa or residing in the country for a long period of time, you will need to get an Australian bank account. Once you arrive at your destination, go to your chosen bank as soon as possible and present them with your passport as identification in order to open the account. Try to do this within six weeks, because if you leave it any longer, they will require utility bills and other documents. You have a choice of three bank cards: cheque, savings or credit card. Your everyday normal account in Oz is called a ‘savings account’ and your savings or secondary account is called a ‘cheque account’. When you use your EFTPOS card (Electronic Funds withdrawal at Point of 32

www.bbmlive.com

Sale), or a cash machine (ATM) you will be presented with three options on the screen: cheque, savings or credit. You will need to make sure you choose the correct option for the money to go from the correct account. Most Australian banks charge a monthly accountkeeping fee of around $5, and little or no interest. You’re also limited to the number of transactions, some banks limit the number of free withdrawals you can have per month. With a bank account you will normally receive an EFTPOS or ATM (cash machine) card so you can withdraw your money. If you use another bank’s ATM then you will incur a fee of around $1.50 – $2.00. The main banks in Oz are Commonwealth, National, ANZ, St George and Westpac, and you’ll need to shop around in order to get the best deal. To find a bank account that best suits your needs, the Australian Bankers’ Association provides helpful information. Visit www.bankers.asn.au to start looking. You can also find international banks such as HSBC and Citi Bank. We recommend banking with the largest banks in Australia, as they have many ATM machines dotted around, including in rural areas, which is useful when you’re travelling. Each of the large banks have deals online from time to time in order for you to get the best out of your card, including no bank charges for the first 12 months. It’s always worth contacting the bank directly about these offers.

SHIPPING

Shipping from the UK to Australia – Ensuring a Smooth Journey for Your Stuff

Australia has a thousand and one good reasons why you should move there. The only downside we can think of is the creepy crawlies. But you get used to those; you just have to think of them as unwanted house guests. So if you’ve decided Australia will be the next port of call in your life, you’ll need to do some serious thinking about what to take and how to get it to your final destination safely. The first thing you need to do is take into consideration the local import laws. The Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service (AQIS) have a set of quite strict regulations around the import of food, plants and animal materials into the country in order to prevent pests and diseases entering and affecting the natural environment. We all know what happened with Johnny Depp’s furry friends recently. 34

www.bbmlive.com

The following types of items will be seized and destroyed by AQIS, so don’t try to ship them! • Any dairy products (unless listed as being from a country confirmed free of foot and mouth disease) • Live plants (including potted, bare rooted, roots and bulbs) • Seeds and nuts (including cereal grains, popping corn and pine cones - including those in decorations!) • Uncanned meat products (from any animal) • Refrigerators, air conditioners or anything else containing CFCs or HCFCs Once you’ve worked out what you’re going to take, you’ll need a few top tips on how to pack them safely and correctly. And here they are: • Always stick a label to every box you pack with a full list of the contents. It sounds like a chore and, well, it is, but if you find yourself in Australia, staring at a hundred boxes, wondering

which one the kettle is in, you’ll only have yourself to blame • Check both locations in the UK and Australia to determine where the best place will be to park the removal lorry or container. There may be parking restrictions you don’t know about at the new place • Don’t just drape a bit of bubble wrap over your treasured possessions. Your boxes are going halfway round the world in various forms of transport – wrap all fragile items tightly and securely • Check that TVs and other devices will even work in Australia before you start wrapping them and putting them in boxes So that’s it. Should you be looking for a revolutionary, hassle-free approach to removals why not check out the MoveCube® from Seven Seas Worldwide? It’s a mini shipping container inside a trailer that comes directly to your home for loading!

JOBS IN AUSTRALIA

CO LI N FASSN I D G E From Dublin to Sydney, Colin Fassnidge made a life for himself as one of the city’s finest chefs. With two successful restaurants, cookery books and a place on the My Kitchen Rules judging panel, he’s a role model for anyone looking to live and work in Sydney. Here, he tells us how it all happened and what he makes of the hospitality industry today. You’ve been running the kitchen of Four In Hand in Sydney for about 10 years, have you been able to see the industry change in Sydney during this time?

It’s a lot less up itself! It’s a lot easier to eat out, a lot cheaper, but you can eat really great food cheaply and get great service, whereas years ago it was a bit more stuffy. And there are so many nationalities as well; it’s a melting pot, which is great. How does it compare to other cities around the world?

I would compare it a little bit to San Francisco. I went to Paris last year to do Omnivore, a food festival, and I didn’t really want to go because they’re quite caught up in the rules of cooking, similar to London, where they use the same ingredients for one dish, whereas Australia is still finding itself. Sydney’s a lot more exciting. What’s your ethos on food?

Nose to tail – we buy the animal whole and try to use all of it. We also offer value for money, we don’t want to rip people off or do anything too trendy, and people enjoy what we do. What advice would you give to someone from Ireland or anywhere overseas that wanted to use their skills and bring them to Australia?

We sponsor a lot of Irish and English because they’ve got a good work ethic – the Aussie chefs haven’t really got a good work ethic until they go to Europe and then come back. It’s a different working atmosphere in Europe, they work hard and fast, and I’d say to just bring that working attitude with you, because you’ll get a job easily; they love chefs from Europe. 36

www.bbmlive.com

What are the biggest challenges when moving to Australia, making a success of it and keeping that success?

The biggest challenge might be to have too much lifestyle! That’s why everyone lives here because you work just as hard as you would in Europe, but you’ve got this lifestyle. And to keep it, you just work hard and realise it’s not all about the money. Use the guys that can teach you something – it’s a lot better than getting the high paid jobs that serve crap food, because in five years time you’ll still be doing crap food. What do you do to enjoy the work/life balance in Australia?

I’ve got two young children and I live at the beach, so a lot of it revolves around that, especially in Sydney. There’s a lot of outdoors time and I spend a lot of time on my motorbikes. It’s just like any coastal area where it’s sunny. There’s a lot of time around water. I do scuba diving and a bit of spear fishing and swimming. NICOLA GRACE: ON HOW SHE BECAME A BOWER HEALTHCARE NURSE & MADE THE MOVE FROM THE UK TO AUSTRALIA

What attracted you to apply to Bower Healthcare? When I was still living in the UK and considering making the move to Australia, a colleague told me about her time working for Bower Healthcare in Sydney. She had really enjoyed working for the agency and suggested that I get in touch with them myself. What experience and qualifications were they looking for? I found it very similar to applying for a job in the UK; I had to provide a CV showing experience and qualifications relevant to the area of nursing that I wanted to work in, along with referees. I also had to register with AHPRA, the Australian equivalent of the NMC, and provide evidence of screening for various diseases, such as TB and Hep B. Were you in Australia or overseas when applying? I was still in the UK when I originally contacted Bower Healthcare and I explained that I was planning to arrive in Sydney after travelling in Asia and South America for around six months. Graham Bower was very quick to respond to my email, and suggested that I stay in touch during my travels, with a view to completing my application on arrival in Australia. I did contact the agency towards the end of my trip and then Graham explained the steps I could start taking to speed up the process once I arrived.

How regularly did you receive contact from Bower after applying? I had lots of questions before I arrived, about the kind of work I might be able to get and the practicalities of working as an overseas nurse, so the agency responded to explain more about this whenever I had a query. Within a few days of getting to Sydney, I had an appointment at the agency where we went through all the compliancy and paperwork that I needed to complete. We came up with a simple list of tasks, such as applying for a tax file number and organising my medical records. I’m now waiting on a few things to come back before I can start work in a couple of weeks’ time. The agency has been in regular contact since I arrived, providing advice and keeping me updated on the progress of my application. How has your experience been looking for work with Bower Healthcare? The agency has been very involved in helping me to apply to join them and to get work once I am signed up. They have explained everything clearly all along, supported me to settle in to working a new country with a new healthcare system, and they have assured me that they will be able to find me the shifts that I am looking for. Do you feel secure working through Bower Healthcare? I do feel secure working through the agency. Doing casual shifts is obviously different to finding a permanent job, as I will not have contracted hours, but I am confident that I will be able to work where and when I want to through the agency. The support I have received already shows me that they are committed to making the process as easy and efficient as possible. Turtle Season on Heron Island

Top Tips for Turtle Watching • To find a turtle, simply walk along Heron Beach one or two hours after the evening’s high tide. Look for tracks in the sand to see where the turtles have come in from the ocean. • Light can disturb and disorient the turtles, so always minimize the use of torches and make sure they’re 3-volt low-impact torches. • Don’t use flash photography. • When you see a turtle moving up or down the beach stay as still as possible. Excessive movement can upset the turtles. • Never walk in front of a turtle, always walk behind them. • Do not try and approach the turtles. If they feel threatened they will retreat to the sea and not lay their eggs. • If you come across a turtle digging out her nest, give her some room. Sit down quietly behind the turtle at least 10 metres away. Once she has finished digging, wait at least 15 minutes then you may approach from behind. • The turtles can be quite stressed and tired after a night of digging and laying their eggs so always be sure to not get too close (10 metres is close enough) so as not to panic them.

Escape the hustle and bustle of city life and delve deep into this island paradise filled to the brim with natural beauty and an abundance of marine life. Heron Island is a stunning coral cay situated 89km off of the coast of Queensland. The island is the perfect long weekend away for those who want rid of the buzz of mobile phones and lethargy of television and really experience a relaxing island getaway on the Great Barrier Reef. Heron Island is small enough to walk around the entire island in just 20 minutes, and with a no-day-trippers rule, this guest-only island means you won’t be crowded in and battling to find a spot for your towel on the beach. To reach this tropical arcadia of the Great Barrier Reef you can either take a boat for $60 or travel by seaplane for $338. The exclusivity of the island enables you to escape the tourist trap of other resorts within the Great Barrier Reef. The island features a range of stunning accommodation including private suites, a free-standing beach house, and twin rooms. Each accommodation type features a balcony or terrace, en suite bathrooms, towels, air conditioning, mini bars and more. Most rooms offer ocean views in between the unique vegetation on this plush island. From October to March, Heron Island is brought to life by the annual visit from Loggerhead and Green Turtles making their pilgrimage to breed on the shores of the island. The breeding turtles return some 30 years after hatching in the region, continuing the circle of life.

Heron Island has a resident population of around 4,000 turtles who live on Heron reef, so you can expect to see turtles in the water all year round. In September, more of these giants of the sea flock back to the island to mate and lay clutches of eggs. Hatching usually occurs with the warmer weather from December. You can take full advantage of this magical time of year and make the most of the fantastic savings and inclusions on offer when you book your 3 (or more!) night turtle season holiday, which includes: • Accommodation • Daily Breakfast • 1 snorkel trip • 24 hours free Wi-Fi for 1 device • A special turtle gift (an ornament per room or a t-shirt/turtle backpack for kids) • From $160 per person, per night, based on twin share Book a suite and receive return boat transportation for 2 adults. Better yet, kids stay and eat breakfast for free when using existing bedding configuration. Book at www.heronisland.com

SOUTH AUSTRALIA

KANGAROO ISLAND, A ZOO WITHOUT FENCES

Kangaroo Island is a true zoo without fences. Take a marine adventure cruise and swim with the island’s resident pods of dolphins, a guided beach walk amongst a colony of wild Australian SeaLions and spy on an echidna love train. What’s an echidna love train you say? Well it’s a lovelorn male echidna queuing up behind a female, nose to tail, forming long trains, up to ten echidnas long! Usually happens in winter (June to Sept) so don’t miss out! Kangaroo Island (or KI as the locals call it) has a lot and we mean a lot of wildlife which you can see in its natural environment. Flinders Chase National Park, located at the western end of Kangaroo Island and one of Australia’s largest parks covering 74,000 hectares of untouched bushland is home to a variety of fauna, including the unique Kangaroo Island kangaroo (yes they are different to the roos on the mainland!), koalas, Tammar wallabies, echidnas, the endangered Cape Barren Geese and even platypus. You can see all this and much more with Kangaroo Island Adventure Tours – one of Adelaide’s highest ranking tours on Trip Advisor. The price of their two day Kangaroo Island Wilderness Explorer Tour has dropped to just $399 for travel to the end of August. The tour also has a bit of soft adventure too with sandboarding at Little Sahara and stays at the coolest backpacker accommodation on the island, Vivonne Bay Lodge, with full use of kayaks and bikes. There is a stunning swimming and surfing beach nearby at Vivonne Bay as well. The Lodge is in bushland with 10km of sign posted walking trails to explore and one kilometre of beach frontage. Nothing beats relaxing on the big deck after a fun day of touring and being 70

www.bbmlive.com

visited by friendly kangaroos and koalas that call Vivonne Bay home. TASMANIA

Your Local Guide To Tasmania Tasmania isn’t always on everyone’s Australia bucket list, but here, local lass, Lucy Bradshaw tells us just why you should explore this intrepid southern island off the coast of Australia, and even gives us the lowdown on how to discover Tassie off the beaten track. So take in all this local’s Tasmania Travel Guide has to offer and redo your Aussie adventure bucket list! Name: Lucy Bradshaw

Current Locations: Dodges ferry, Hobart, Tasmania Occupation: Food & Beverage Attendant and full time Tasmania Instagrammer! For those who haven’t been to Tasmania, what’s the climate and whether like? Tasmania is well known for its ”four seasons in one day”. We have the best of it all really. Summers are getting hotter and hotter, winter is just stunning in Tasmania; with our snow covered mountain, which creates the ideal setting. Spring and autumn are equally beautiful as well, but my best advice would be to pack for all weather as it can change very quickly sometimes. What other places should people check out outside of Hobart? Places like Lauderdale, Kingston, Huonville and Sorell are all growing in popularity. Do you get out and about in Hobart much? I try to as much as I can, Hobart has a great pub scene. Hobart has also embraced its winter months with events such as Dark MOFO and Festival of the Voices. So where’s the best place to go out? The Republic Bar & Café offers patrons a laid back pub vibe with great food and some of the

72

best local, national and international musicians around. Where’s the best place to go for dinner? Once again you are spoiled for choice. North Hobart has a great stretch of cafes and restaurants and is just so hard to pick one. There are also Tasmanian businesses Like Bangor Wine & Oyster Shed that offer fresh local produce daily! The oysters that are served are from less than 1km away and the oyster beds can be seen from the venue.

Where’s the most stunning view? Mount Wellington offers the most breath taking view of Hobart, as it looks right over the city and gives you a 180 degree panoramic view.

What kind of wildlife do you come across when taking your photos? In Tasmania we are very lucky and spoiled with an abundance of wildlife. I have come across our very venomous and deadly tiger snakes, sea eagles, wedge tailed eagles, wallabies, kangaroos, possums, wombats, echidnas, platypus, dolphins – and if your lucky enough to have a boat or take one of the sea adventure tours you may come across seals, whales, albatross and maybe even a shark! If someone wanted to experience Tasmania off the beaten track, what three places should they aim to visit? Bushwalking would be one of the best ways to explore, as Tasmania has some world class heritage areas and spectacular scenery. Firstly, Shipstern Bluff on the Tasman Peninsula is where some of the biggest and heaviest waves are ridden by a few of the crazy local lads. Secondly you must visit Wine Glass Bay, with beautiful walks and stunning views. And lastly the Arthur River is simply a stunning part of the world. What single reason should people visit Tasmania for? Tasmania has it all! Fresh clean air, stunning wilderness, fresh local produce right at our finger tips and surrounded by the beautiful ocean. I promise you’ll fall in love with this amazing state! our wilderness, food, wine and heritage are world class! So come and explore!

WESTERN AUSTRALIA

The West Coast of Australia is breath-taking beyond belief, but heaven knows it’s large. For freedom, convenience and the opportunity to see the best locations, you can’t go wrong with a hop-on hop-off pass with Integrity Coach Lines.

If travelling up the West Coast is on your Australia bucket list, you’re in luck. Integrity Coach Lines make it so easy, but they’re about to make it even easier. Currently, the hop-on hop-off pass is available for travel between the WA capital of Perth and the outback town of Broome in the northwest region of the Kimberley. The pass is valid for 12 months so you can take your time and you can stop at as many of the locations along the way as you please, with multiple departures and pick-ups. However, the pass is also only available for travel in one direction, so Perth to Broome or Broome to Perth, no returns. Soon, this will change. The hop-on hop-off pass will be available for any direction for 12 months up to a certain amount of kilometres. This will mean that you can travel from Perth to Monkey Mia and back again, or from Broome to Karijini and back again, or even make a meal of it and go from Perth to Coral Bay, south to Monkey Mia, up to Karijini and back down to Kalbarri. The price of the new pass will be $395 and you can top up your kilometres should you start to run out. This will give you a truckload more freedom to travel the West Coast how you want to, when you want to. Which is a good thing, as there’s quite a lot to see…

74

www.bbmlive.com

The Karijini is Western Australia’s playground of activity and adventure. The second largest national park in the entire country, its dramatic landscape of waterfalls, gorges and rocky terrain is something that visitors can spend all day exploring. So that you can make the most of it, Integrity Coach Lines has teamed up with The Flying Sandgroper for the exclusive Old Skool Karijini Tour. Going back to basics, you’ll be sleeping in an Aussie swag on the red dirt floor and taking a dip in the waters of Fern Pool for your morning shower over this two-day experience. After being dropped off by Integrity Coach Lines at Tom Price Tourist Park, you’ll visit Hancock Gorge, Kermits Pool, Knox Gorge, Dales Gorge, Fern Pool and Fortescue Falls, all within Karijini National Park. The Old Skool Karijini Tour is $385 on top of your Integrity Coach Lines pass, and includes meals, water, entry to the park, and experienced guide, swag hire and pick-up and drop-off.

Monkey Mia

One of Australia’s most exciting wildlife experiences occurs at Monkey Mia. Bottlenose dolphins have been coming up to the shore on their own accord for the last 40 years, and daily visits are virtually guaranteed so travellers have been flocking to the Monkey Mia Dolphin Resort for ages. The resort is situated in Shark Bay, which has even more of a pull due to its crystal clear waters, stromatolites and other marine life including the endangered dugong.

Broome

This outback town attracts the West Coast traveller for many unique reasons. Tropical weather year-round, riding on the back of a camel on Cable Beach, heading to the annual mango festival, and witnessing the phenomenon of Staircase To The Moon where the moonlight beams down upon the exposed tidal flats to create an illusion of stairs reaching up to the moon – you’d be a fool not to pay Broome a visit while travelling the West Coast. Bali

Inner Temple Retreats -

Whether you’re planning a round the world trip, in the middle of one, or coming to the end of your adventure, you’ll no doubt be in a place where you could do with unwinding and taking a step back from day to day life. While creating the Australia Work & Travel Guide we started searching for travel holidays that offered a little more to your everyday tour companies and that’s when we came across Emma from Inner Temple Retreats. We asked Emma who’s originally from the UK to give us an insight to the yoga retreats she runs in Bali and here’s what she had to say.

and some don’t, but generally a more spiritual retreat would not have alcohol available.

What are the main ingredients of a yoga health retreat? Location, exercise, diet? On most yoga health retreats you are going to have at least one - two yoga classes per day. You can expect to eat healthy food, sometimes vegetarian or vegan or even raw dishes will be included. A yoga retreat will tend to be either by the beach or in nature - in a quieter area - as this really helps the guests literally ‘retreat’. Most retreats will offer a pool, nice en-suite bathrooms and generally massages are available either included or as an extra option. Some retreats allow alcohol

Retreats are also fantastic option for females travelling alone because you are guaranteed to make new friends, to have plenty to do without having to seek out the genuine experiences from the tourist traps. It’s also a really good option for busy people. Generally the retreat will organize your airport transfers, and then you don’t have to think about anything, no decisions on food, accommodation or what to do with your days. That is a big plus for many busy people.

80

www.bbmlive.com

Who should consider booking a retreat? What sort of people would benefit from it? Basically now-a-days there is a retreat available that is going to suit anyone and everyone whether your focus is weight loss, relaxation, cultural, fitness, raw food, etc. Retreats are really great for people who would prefer to come home feeling lighter, brighter and healthier. It’s a very different experience than going out to the beach everyday and drinking cocktails or eating at restaurants, going to clubs and parties.

Anyone needing space to facilitate change in their life,

take time out, get over a break up, re-invent themselves or kick start some new habits or lose some old ones would benefit from a retreat. What are the benefits of health and yoga retreats? Body rejuvenation through yoga and massage. Self-development of your yoga practice. Enhance your inner peace and calm. Stay in a super beautiful villa immersed in nature, far from the madding crowds. A repertoire of take home skills for everyday life. Support, fun and friendship. Begin to become more sensitive to your body and its needs. De-stress and decompress with the ability to switch off from any need to plan, organize or be responsible for others. What do people get out of a retreat that they wouldn’t from a spa day or local yoga classes at home? With a retreat you are able to really focus on yourself and your journey, you have the decisions of food, planning, cleaning taken care of and you also are only there for you. Do guests need to have some experience of yoga or a certain degree of fitness before going on a yoga

retreat? Not at all, a good retreat organizer provides instruction for all levels, however it’s best to check when you book, some retreats are better for complete beginners than others. What is Inner Temple Retreats’ philosophy when it comes to retreats? Are there certain rules you follow? Borrowing the philosophy from the Balinese dancers, Inner Temple have crafted a retreat that is both ‘real’ and luxurious, spiritual and fun, creative and positive. We offer space to explore all aspects of beauty; from the inside out and the outside in. Why is Bali the perfect location for a retreat? Bali is the perfect location for a retreat because of a few very tangible and some not so tangible reasons. Firstly the island is beautiful, there is a long history of Rice Farming here on Bali and these large areas of green blowing in the wind make for an incredible back drop to calm the mind and slow down, there is also sacred mountains, the ocean, daily incredible sunsets and of course the temples. The weather is sunny all year, perhaps a little too hot in certain months but in the north of Bali has a beautiful climate all year round. There are flowers and uninterrupted wild nature everywhere. Inner Temple has Sacred Art painting as one of our activities and Bali just makes people sensitive to colour and textures, everything seems oversized and extra colourful. The Balinese people, the women in particular, are so warm hearted and seemingly always smiling. Their intention to serve is so sweet and they

are people that live in the moment, and that carries a lovely energy in itself. The culture of Bali is so strong and different to the UK or Australian eye, there are temples, offerings, flowers, incense and the ceremony clothing of the Balinese as they go to the Temple is so striking and wonderful to look at, we just do not have anything like it in the west. There is also the magical energy of Bali, for 400 years all people did here was grow rice and pray to their Gods, this has created a very special type of energy on the island, it effects some people very strongly. Are guests able to head outside of the retreat and explore? What things would you recommend they see and do in Bali? On an Inner Temple Mini Retreat there is lots of free time to explore, we are based in Canggu. In many ways, Canggu is the sort of uniquely blended paradise that many travelers dream of, but very rarely find; wild cows interrupting traffic, friendly locals and perfect surf breaks, and all this without sacrificing a latte with your breakfast. With a booming cafe culture, a spattering of shops and a handful of high-end day spas, melded perfectly with wide-open spaces and an un-miss-able undercurrent of spirituality, Canggu is the best of both worlds. In 2016 Inner Temple Retreats will introduce retreats in new very exciting locations such as Nusa Lembongan, Rote Island and in the sacred Mountain slopes of West Bali.

What do your guests do after a retreat? Do many of them continue travelling? When our guests travel in from overseas they often think of our retreats as the perfect start or end to other travel. Indonesia has so much to offer with over 15,000 islands there really is an undiscovered element waiting for intrepid explorers. We are always available to help our guests with onward travel, and if it is something we can not help with we refer them to one of our preferred English speaking travel agents who are happy to book things like tours around other Indonesian Islands, flights, boat or ferry trips. What are the advantages of same-sex retreats? Inner Temple has 2 packages 1) Mini Retreats, these are 5 day / 4 nights and open for couples, families, friends, and groups - both sexes. 2) Our premium product is a longer all inclusive 6-7-8 day package with a full schedule of workshops and all meals. These retreat are women only, it gives our guests a chance to feel completely safe and uninhibited in their environment. A strong energy of support is often created throughout the retreat and a Women Only environment means that our guests feel comfortable to share stories and release emotionally in a way that they might not if there were men around. The retreat is also a big opportunity to find the beauty within so it is not at all about getting made up, dressed up or feeling that how you look externally is an issue. Diary of a travel blogger Jay Donnell became a dedicated traveller at 24. Embarking on a postgraduate jaunt through Western Europe at 26, he has now travelled through 55 countries in six continents, capturing many of his experiences on film and Instagram at justheletterj. Here, he tells us more about his travels. Name: Jay Donnell Current Location: Newport Beach, CA Occupation: Teacher and Tutor for the LSAT The best place you’ve been to this year: This winter I tore off back to Asia for a 90-day adventure with no plans but a one-way ticket to Bangkok. The highlight absolutely had to be Nepal. In the winter of 2014, I met a new friend at a hostel bar in Kuala Lumpur, and when I was back in Asia this year he invited me to join him and his girlfriend on a trek to Nepal. After some convincing, I acquiesced and in the first minutes of being on the ground in Kathmandu, I knew I had absolutely made the right call. We spent some days in my new favourite city in the world, then flew to Pokhara to begin our four-day trek into the Annapurna range of the Himalayas. The best cold place you’ve been to: I’ll have to throw this one to the South Island of New Zealand, more specifically the Franz Josef Glacier. Gearing up with crampons and ice picks 84

www.bbmlive.com

and hiking/climbing up a massive glacier was definitely one for the memory bank. Then, later that day, I hit some extra cold weather – about 14,000 feet above sea level! Skydiving from near the peak of the glacier and landing all the way down on the idyllic farmland at sea level was one of the more special jumps I’ve ever done. The best beach you’ve laid on: I’ve been fortunate to see amazing beaches and islands in places like Panama, Cuba, South Africa, Greece, Indonesia, Mexico, The Philippines – but if I had to pick the best beach experience, I can think of none better than The Beach, aka Maya Bay on Ko Phi Phi Leh in Thailand’s Andaman Sea. The nights I spent sleeping on that beach in 2009 and again in 2010 were the best of my life. The most dangerous place you’ve been to: Again, this is a toss up. From favela parties late night in Rio, going “shopping” in La Paz and Medellin, and unadvised ventures around town in Johannesburg, I’ve been extremely fortunate to have never had too gnarly of an experience abroad. That includes swimming with Great Whites in South Africa, bull sharks in Mexico, and 13-foot caimans in the Bolivian Amazon – not to mention the world’s three highest bungee jumps (sorry mom!). Follow Jay at justtheletterj and keep up with us on Instagram at bbmlivesocial

If you fancy yourself as a bit of an entrepreneur but also want to make a difference to developing communities, 40K Globe might be just what you’re looking for. With programs in India, you learn new skills and use the ones you already have, to work with rural villagers on creating a sustainable solution for improved education and employment opportunities. Become a Glober, and as part of a team with the guidance of a Team Leader, you can make a huge difference to communities with a long-lasting positive impact. To help tell the story of 40K Globe, we speak to Georgia and Jimmy, two people that have done it all… How did you both get involved with 40K? Georgia: I found out about 40K through one of my friends who had gone on the program and had become a team leader herself. I was looking for something worthwhile and personable to do with my university holidays. I really liked what she was saying about 40K; how you actually work on a project, it’s something sustainable, something that the impact is going to keep helping once I left. I loved the fact that it wasn’t so much a volunteer job; it was more like an internship where you learn so many skills and get to compliment your 86

university degree. Jimmy and I actually studied together at uni, and we wanted to find something where we could use our skills that we learnt at uni, so we walked straight up to the international office and applied for 40K, got on the program the next week, booked our flights straight after and within 10 days we were booked to go to India – and then we told our parents! How soon after making that decision did you end up out in India and where did you start? Jimmy: After signing up, you go on a two-day induction, and the team leaders that are going on the program basically run you through how it will be on the ground and protocols. After that you head off to India for a month and out to rural Bangalore into villages around there. Are the courses running continuously or are there set times of the year for departures? Jimmy: The target demographic is uni students, so it runs during university holidays, so July, December, January and February. There are four programs over the four months, and each program is four weeks. What are the different projects running at the moment? Are there different areas of skills that people can get involved with? Georgia: Jimmy and I were working on the marketing. There are different skillsets from journalism to media to filmmaking to social enquiry in international studies, because it’s more like a research theory-based project. The majority of our projects are all product-based, so there’s a lot more business and creativity. We have Banyan Bags – laptop cases; Roka – which is jewellery made out of granite from the quarries and big mines; we have yoga mat bags, incense sticks – the list goes on! How do people get involved in the business side of things? Georgia: When you come on the program, you don’t say “Oh, I want to work on the yoga mat

bags” or “I want to work on the jewellery” – there’s about 70 students at the moment and about 12 teams, and each team is assigned a product. Some of them are new, like the incense sticks, so they’ve gone in to do all the market research to see if it’s a viable business. Something like Roka, which has been going for nearly two years, that will be improved by a new team. Are the students actually finding people to work on those projects? Jimmy: That’s exactly what they do. For example, with Banyan Bags, they will have gone to local women to see who’s interested in producing them and train them on how to make them. They might get them to make 20 bags, but the eventual aim is to get these businesses off the ground so they run autonomously and on a regular basis. Georgia: We have our first trial of one team making candles with local village women for other village people, so it’s a business set in India for the Indian market. Now we’re getting the hang of the Australian market, we wanted to test the waters to make the products for the Indian market. Are there any restrictions on visas or do you just need to get an Indian tourist visa? Georgia: Yes, we came over on tourist visas. That’s all that you need because we’re not actually getting paid to be here. Do people have to have a degree to do the course? At the moment, we focus on people who are studying or just finished studying. It’s not an age thing – you can be 30 and studying and come on the program – but we want to allow students to develop the skills that they’re learning at university and put them into a challenging, professional context.

the balintro guide to bali Before you head off to discover the stunning beaches, world class surf, fascinating culture and crazy nightlife of Bali, here are some questions you may have, answered by the guys at Balintro, to provide you with a useful and informative Bali travel guide.

Q. How much money will I need? A. It depends on how long you’re going travelling

for and how much you spend along the way. It’s a good idea to have at least $1500AUD for every month that you’re going to be away.

Q. What’s the best way to use/carry my money? A. It’s best to take a Visa/MasterCard debit/credit

or a travel money card with you, with a back-up PIN-protected card to keep elsewhere (say with your passport) in case you lose the primary one. There are ATM’s and moneychangers available throughout Bali so it’s easy to get access to cash.

Q. What’s the weather like in Bali at certain times of year? A. The great thing about Bali is it’s usually quite

hot all year round, with no particularly bad time to go. There are generally 2 broad seasons: April – September is usually dryer and slightly hotter. October – March has a slightly higher chance of rain and tends be slightly cooler.

Q. Do I need a visa to travel to Bali? A . Most nationalities including the United

Kingdom, most European nations, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, USA, Scandinavia and Brazil will receive a 30-day visa on arrival in Bali at an approx. cost of $35USD. Which is best paid in cash. Be sure you have a passport with at least 6 months validity.

Q. Is a Backpack or Suitcase better and how much should I bring? A. We recommend bringing a 45-70 litre backpack

and packing light! It’s almost always hot in Bali and minimal clothing is required. And dragging a 30kg suitcase around is not cool.

Q. Will I get by without knowing the language? A. Yes. The majority of locals in tourist areas

speak English.

Q. How long in advance do I need to book Balintro? A . You can book Balintro right up until before

you leave. However groups usually fill up fast, so it’s best to book as early as possible to avoid disappointment.

Q. Is Bali a dangerous place to visit? A. No. Bali is generally a safe place. With our

help, some common sense and respect for the Balinese culture you’ll be ok. For more info, start dates or to book check out

An asian Adventure with Contiki Vanessa Stavrou tells us all about her time on the 14-day Asian Adventure with Contiki… How does the Asian Adventure trip give you a taste of Southeast Asia in 14 days? It’s awesome; you get to cover the big sites across three countries – Thailand, Laos and Cambodia – staying in nine cities, and still manage to fit in so many local experiences. I was blown away that only four days in it felt like I’d been travelling for two weeks – I’d seen and done so much! What are the highlights that passengers can learn and discover about the main locations? The local experiences were amazing! Just a few to name are, the Thai cooking class in Chiang Mai, the two days we travelled by boat on the Mekong River into Laos, cycling through Luang Prabang and stopping off to drink rice wine fermented

into a jar with spiders, snakes and other animals (so intense!) the fabulous markets, the amazing temples and so much great food! There were also many moments on the trip that really made you stop and think; visiting the Killing Fields in Phnom Penh was definitely an emotional day for the whole group. We also visited the COPE support centre in Vientiane in Laos, an organisation that makes prosthetic limbs for those injured by cluster bombs that were dropped over Laos during the Vietnam war. As a group, we donated money to their cause after being truly moved by the stories we heard. What were your favourite cities and why? Luang Prabang for the night markets, time spent with the monks and elephants, and

the amazing bike ride we did around the city; and Chiang Mai in Thailand because the cooking class was just so good! What’s the most memorable place you visited? There are so many to choose from, so I’m going to share a favourite experience and a favourite place: My favourite place was definitely the famous Angkor Wat in Siem Reap. My favourite experience was in Vang Vieng in Laos; we had a free day to do whatever we wanted, but our trip manager, Az, organised for those who wanted a morning kayak down the river. FOMO set in and nearly all the group chose to do the kayaking. When we got there, we were surprised with first going caving on tubes: 20 of us in a pitch black cave, lying on tubes pulling ourselves along a rope with flash lights on our heads singing “in the jungle, the mighty jungle” – so random and so fun! Then we jumped on the kayaks. It was just our group on the river, mountains on either side and we had a speaker on one of the kayaks playing awesome music. It was so great to be all together surrounded by such beauty. What parts of the trip receive the biggest reaction from passengers or would you say

were the main highlights? Tough one – there were so many – but there was one day on the trip referred to as the BEST DAY EVER in Luang Prabang: we woke up at 5am to bless the monks, referred to as offering of the arms. Then we visited an elephant sanctuary where all the elephants are rescued from logging farms or tourist parks where they were mistreated. After that, we travelled to the beautiful Kuang Si Falls, the water was so aqua blue it was amazing, and then we headed to the markets for dinner and a few drinks – a great relaxed way to end THE BEST DAY EVER. But there is one highlight that everyone shared on the trip and that was getting to know each other and becoming a family. You really do make friends for life on a Contiki trip. Does the food change much from Thailand to Laos to Cambodia? Is there a particular delicacy passengers have to try from each country? Yeah, definitely slight variations. You felt the French influence in Laos; their bread was amazing and you could get these awesome salad and chicken rolls at the markets for a few dollars. I love my chilli and the Tom Yum soup in Thailand was awesome, as was the Penang Curry. Are there opportunities throughout the trip for passengers to meet local people? What sort of

experience can they expect? Having a local guide in every city helped get us off the beaten track into lesser known areas to try food and meet people. My favourite story about meeting locals was in Bangkok: I along with three other girls on the trip left the buzzing tourist night spot one evening to head back to the hotel. We got a little lost and spotted a tiny bar playing Jazz music. We walked in and everyone looked at us – we were definitely the only tourists in the place! The band were all Thai playing the most awesome Jazz tunes. Everyone was seated listening to the music – but within 10 minutes we created a dance floor and had all the locals up on their feet dancing the night away. Such a random night, great story and legendary moment! How can passengers ensure they get value for money at the many markets? Can you suggest items that are worth buying or any haggling tips? I found haggling so hard at first. Especially when you convert it and realise you’re fighting over a dollar! One golden rule: never compare what you paid with someone else – if you’re happy with the price and the merchant’s happy with the price then you got a good deal. As a rough guide, always halve the price and then work up from there landing somewhere in the middle. Silk scarves are a must in Cambodia. The artwork at the night markets in Luang Prabang were amazing!

How do Contiki ensure passengers are safe during the trip, especially in free time? Are the areas you visit safe? Everywhere we stayed was safe. Gosh, I didn’t even give safety a second thought, we were surrounded by such beautiful people and our trip manager along with our local guide told us where to go so it all seemed pretty straight forward. In three words why should people book an Asian Adventure? Unforgettable, unimaginable, unbelievable. The Asian Adventure with Contiki Holidays costs from £1,269pp and includes accommodation, internal transport, a tour group, a trip manager, local tour guides and a total of 17 meals over 14 days. The Asian Adventure is one of many Contiki Holidays Asian trips from 9-25 days. If you’ve only got a few weeks to travel or if you’re looking to experience Asia and make new friends along the way, definitely consider organised group travel as an option. It’s great to share your experiences with likeminded people, and even better if they’re with you for the ride. Gili Islands A trio of paradise islands located off the northwest coast of Lombok, the Gilis were once legendary among backpackers exploring the next big step on the banana pancake trail. They gained notoriety as a laid-back lotus land where likeminded travellers could escape the tourist hordes and live the dream of full moon parties, sugar-spun sands and dazzling, aquamarine waters. Fast forward a couple of decades to the present day and the little Gilis have matured with a range of activities and amenities springing up to appeal to a wide range of holiday-makers. However, with an abundance of low cost places to stay, eat and drink still readily available, the Gilis have successfully retained their reputation as a key destination on the beach loving, budget traveller’s Indonesian itinerary.

Introducing the Gili Islands

The reason these tropical triplets hold such universal appeal is that each possesses its own distinct personality and ambience. All you need to do is figure out which most closely resembles your own personal paradise. Gili Trawangan, affectionately nicknamed Gili T, is the largest and most developed of the islands. The main street is lined with beach bars, dive shops and accommodation options that look right out onto the ocean whilst the stunning, west side beaches are filled with bronzed bodies and comfortable spots to sip a sunset drink. Gili Air is the middle-sized island, a low key and relaxed retreat, appealing to a more sophisticated crowd as well as honeymooners enjoying the blissful beaches. The smallest island is little Gili Meno, a rustic hideaway where you can live out your Robinson Crusoe or

Girl Friday fantasies and get back to mother nature.

What to do in the Gili Islands

All three islands are idyllic locations for lounging on the beach, swimming, snorkelling and diving. The Gili Islands are renowned for having some of the best dive sites in the world and shops such as Blue Marlin, Manta Dive and Dream Divers are amongst the many establishments offering courses for all abilities. Expect to swim with sea turtles, bumphead parrotfish, manta rays and reef sharks. Or simply hire snorkel equipment and explore the coral reef straight off the beach. Paddle-boarding, kayaking or taking a trip on a glass-bottomed boat are other wonderful ways to enjoy all that beautiful blue. To explore the islands up on dry land, pack water and sunscreen and take a walk – all three can be circumnavigated in under an hour. Bicycles can also be

Visit the turtle sanctuaries on Gili T and Gili Meno and observe the snug hatcheries where the eggs are protected from predators as well as the bubbling nurseries where baby turtles splash and play, waiting to be released back into the sea. For more encounters with local wildlife, explore Gili Meno’s bird park where over three hundred exotic birds fly free. Later, as dusk falls, soak up the sensational sunset views on the west side of the islands where the silhouette of Bali’s mighty Mount Agung fades away as the sun streaks the sky with red, orange and pink. Or catch a movie at the island cinema where you can munch popcorn, relax on comfy cushions and kick back with a beer.

Where to eat and drink

Foodies rejoice - the range of delectable dishes available on the Gilis will get those tastebuds tingling. From authentic, local meals served up in simple warungs to swanky, global cuisine, all tastes are catered for. Try the Night Market on Gili T just south of the jetty for a popular range of street food stalls with all the Indonesian favourites like nasi goreng and spicy satay. Tiny Gili Meno is home to Bibi’s Café, a firm, traveller favourite due to the good, old-fashioned pizza served up fresh from their woodfired oven.

those that prefer live music with a fantastic house band playing all the classics from reggae to rock. Gili Air is markedly more laidback but still has the ability to sink a few drinks. Legend is an atmospheric reggae bar towards the north of the island and home to the full and black moon parties the island occasionally hosts.

Where to stay

There are plenty of accommodation options on the islands including private budget rooms from $14 AUD to air con bungalows at around $37 AUD and luxurious villas with private pools that can cost up to $565 AUD. During peak times like July and August it is a good idea to book ahead for at least the first couple of nights. The cheapest accommodation on Gili Trawangan is located in and around the village – head inland to explore and negotiate for the best price. Gili T&B Homestay is a welcoming family home with wifi, a tasty breakfast, air-con and a private terrace from $14 and a top choice on Gili Meno is Sunset Gecko, with rustic, A-frame bungalows a short skip away from the ocean.

Which Gili will you choose? Will you be tempted by fun loving Gili T’s buzzing nightlife, reeled in by Gili Air’s laid-back charm or seduced by the peace and tranquillity of remote Gili Meno? Of course, if you simply can’t decide, then jump aboard the island hopping service that runs daily. After all, why stick with one Gili when you can have three?

When it comes to nightlife, Gili T is where the party’s at. Rudy’s Bar is a long-established institution with a buzzing dance floor where locals and visitors alike love to mingle. Sama Sama is a firm favourite for

Discovering India

A country that will open your eyes and feed your soul, we take a look at two very unique travel experiences in India… The Kambli Ghat Pass

For many of us, train journeys are something you have to take to get from A to B, but the train between the cities of Jodhpur and Udaipur in India is something a little out of the ordinary. Travelling through the scenic Kambli Ghat Pass near Jojawar, Rajasthan, this is not a tourist train, but one that locals use everyday. As a result, if you do get to board, you can enjoy interesting conversation with them (well, if your Indian or their English is any good), as they try to suppress their surprise and excitement of meeting someone from overseas. This, paired with the moments when the train is drenched in complete darkness and children laugh and scream from the excitement, and when the train stops on bridges for brake checks, make the journey unique to say the 94

least. If you seek local, cultural experiences while travelling, the Kambli Ghat Pass will tick all of the boxes. While it’s not a tourist train per se, the Kambli Ghat Pass is still a picturesque ride through the beautiful hills and forests of Aravallis and the Aravali Range as well as desert-like landscapes, with one very memorable surprise guest. The train makes a scheduled stop to feed Langur monkeys, and these greedy devils know exactly when and where to jump on board. The passengers hold out biscuits for the monkeys, but these hungry primates can get aggressive, so there are bars across all of the windows. Now, you wouldn’t see that on the London Underground…

The Blue City

To say that Jodhpur leaves a lasting impression would be doing it an injustice. The second-largest city in Rajasthan is looked down upon by the great Mehrangarh Fort, 100ft tall and 400ft above the skyline of Jodhpur. Today, it may be best known for featuring in Hollywood movie, The Dark Knight Rises, but this imposing and muscular structure

holds some of the finest palaces in the state, and its museum preserves priceless relics of ancient India. Most striking of all is its red sandstone colour contrasting with the beautiful blue of the local houses, giving Jodhpur the nickname The Blue City. Theories behind the choice of colour range from its connotation of Brahmin to its use of repelling insects – but, whatever the reason, it’s certainly led many travellers to wander the old quarters and has as a result become the tourist hub of Jodhpur. You could wander these streets for hours, but a market is well worth a stop to pick up local treasures from musical instruments to saris. As well as the Mehrangarh Fort and Museum, visitors to Jodhpur can also lay their eyes upon the majestic sandstone Umaid Bhawan Palace and the white marble Jaswant Thada, both important icons of Jodhpur history and heritage.

A visit to Jodhpur and through the Kambli Ghat Pass are just two highlights on the Grand Heritage Tour of India with Travel & Taste. Exclusive to BBM readers, this tour also includes a visit to the Taj Mahal, an elephant ride in Jaipur, a boat ride on Lake Pichola in Udaipur and an overnight train from Jodhpur to Delhi. Ideal for first-time travellers to India, the Grand Heritage Tour provides comfortable but affordable travel, with hotel accommodation, a local guide and unique experiences over 15 days at just $999pp based on two people sharing an AC medium-sized car or $1499 for one person using an AC medium-sized car.
