ST PATS DAY

bbmlive.com

St Pats Day Sydney The World’s biggest excuse for piss-up, St. Patrick’s Day St comes back to Sydney with an epic take over of The Rocks. St. Patrick’s Day is one of the most celebrated days of any patron saint in the world and, with Australia’s huge Irish contingent, the land Down Under is a great place to celebrate. So, if you’re from Ireland and you are used to celebrating the event in a cold, wet and dreary Ireland then you’re really going to love the spectacle of a Paddy’s Day in sunny Oz. It’s no secret that the Irish, like most of us, like a good drink from time to time and on St. Patrick’s Day it’s the law that every Irishman, and anyone who has even the most distant of Irish blood in them, drinks their own bodyweight in Guinness. So the fact that your great, great, great grandfather’s sister’s dog was half Irish means you too are allowed to get full of the black gold. But of course St Patrick’s Day isn’t all about getting obscenely drunk and singing Danny Boy repeatedly until your mates throw you in a taxi home. There is lots to do in Australia over the period of St. Patrick’s Day, which as you all know is on March 17th. In Sydney, which has a huge number of Irish people, both backpackers and Expats, there are loads of Irish pubs offering Irish themed nights, live Irish bands and discount drinks over the week of St. Patrick’s and on Sunday, March 18th, a St. Patrick’s Day Parade will take place in the city.

Get ready for a St Pats Day Weekender! PJ O’Brien’s - St Patrick’s Day Weekend It’s the one day of the year when everyone wishes they were Irish! Alex Williamson

In 2018 alone, Alex Williamson played to majority sold-out audiences at six comedy festivals across Australia, New Zealand and the UK; eleven shows in England and Ireland; and a 36-date tour of greater Australia, making him undoubtedly one of Australia’s most popular comedians and social media creators.

Alex will be bringing his new show Sin On My Face to Australian comedy festivals in 2019 with shows at the Adelaide Fringe, Melbourne International Comedy Festival, and Perth and Sydney Comedy Festivals. How would you describe yourself? A bit of a reclusive. I don’t live in a forest or anything, but I tend to avoid people. Which isn’t hard in regional South Australia. I think our state population is 3. What inspired you to get into Comedy? Watching comedians as a young child, I was never a stand out funny bastard in school. Just became a bit more observant (funnily enough, the same time I started smoking weed). Is your comedian stage persona quite close to the real you? I try to keep a safe distance. Definitely a bit of a blurred line at times, but this is typically when shit is not going right for me, so I think it’s good to avoid becoming the character too much. For the sake of my mental health.

Nina Oyama

Nina Oyama is performing her show ‘Nina Oyama Needs a Lift’ at the 15th annual Sydney Comedy Festival. The Festival takes place from 22nd April to 19th May. Tickets available from www.sydneycomedyfest.com.au.

What’s your name and how do you introduce yourself? My name is Nina Oyama - I’m a comedian, writer and anxiety-haver from Sydney, Australia. We want to have a chat about the comedy scene in Australia which has been blowing up the last few years. What do you think makes Australia such a great place for stand-up comedy? I think Australians have a really self-deprecating sense of humour, and we aren’t afraid to take the piss out of ourselves. We also like to laugh a lot. Australians make for great comedy audiences. I think it’s partially because we love a joke - but also we love alcohol, and everything is a lot funnier when you’re drunk. Each year the comedy and fringe festivals in Australia just keep getting bigger and better. How do you think these stand up against the Edinburgh Fringe Festival? I haven’t been to Edinburgh Fringe yet but I’ve heard there are a lot of cool old castles there. I know Australian Fringe Festivals are slowly becoming more popular but until we have castles, we will always be second to Edinburgh. The problem is - you can’t just build an old castle - you have to build a new castle, and then over time it gets old. Basically what I’m saying is, we if we start building castles right now, in 100 years we will finally have the #1 Fringe Festival in the World. We’ve been showcasing Aussie comedy shows for 19 years and we’re super proud to see where the industry has gone. Are there any Aussie comedians or people in the industry who you feel have been major driving forces to this growth? Who and why do you think they’ve made such an impact? Yes - Zoe Coombs Marr, Hannah Gadsby and Nazeem Hussain are all killing it on the world stage, and really changing the game when it comes to stand-up comedy. All of them are defying the narrative that stand-up comedy needs to be like, a white guy complaining about aeroplane food or Tinder. I dig it. Australia’s also had some major viral comedy talent emerge over the last few years, do you have a favourite? And what is it that you love? I love Aaron Chen, Aunty Donna and Demi Lardner, all of them do anti-comedy really well. I stan!

8

bbmlive.com Do you have a favourite British or Irish comedian? Eddie Izzard my favourite British (I think i could pull heels off as well). I also was a big fan of Ed Byrne, Irish fella who is underrated around the world, in my opinion. What’s your favourite Comedy club in Australia? I like the Comic’s Lounge in Melbourne. Got a good 80’s vibe about it. Had some of my best nights there, but possibly due to the drugs more than the venue. The comedy scene in Australia is blowing up. What do you think is driving that? The internet. We were once a distant bunch of cowboys, now we’re a more accessible bunch of cowboys. Scary thought i know. What’s your favourite Comedy festival or venue in the world? And why do you love it? Melbourne International is probably the most glamourous, as far as the amount of desirable international performers on show. But the Adelaide fringe where I live has its own charm, and is a growing force. Also, ounces of weed are $200 here which is fuck all. What’s the most Aussie thing you’ve ever done? I have a mate who got a hole dissolved into the muscle of his upper arm from the white tail spider bite, when he was smoking bongs in his shed. Although he is now able to put hide drugs in his spider bite hole and cover them with a Band-Aid, giving himself easy access to music festivals. Most Aussie thing ever, hiding drugs in your spider bite hole. What’s your favourite Aussie slang word or saying? Probably the C word. This shouldn’t need an explanation C*nt. What’s your least favourite Aussie slang word or saying? ‘Fair go’. We got way to many refugees in abhorrent conditions to truly consider ourselves a ‘fair go’ country. Australia has a great grassroots comedy club scene much like the UK and Ireland. Places like the Comedy Store that run great shows regularly through the week. Do you have any favourites? Yes! I love The Comedy Lounge in Sydney, also a new room in Sydney called What She Said - it’s on a Sunday and sells out every week. It features female comics but also encourages really alternative comedy - people mucking about with different sound cues, props, clowning and overall different types of performance. Can you recommend any acts we should try and get out to see at the Sydney Comedy Festival: Bec Charlwood & Sian Smyth Lauren Bonner Double Denim Luke Heggie Tom Walker Suren Jayemanne Can you tell us your top 5 Comedy clubs or nights in Australia? Spleen Bar (Melbourne) The European (Melbourne) Comedy Lounge (Sydney) What She Said (Sydney) The Comedy Store (Sydney) And your top 5 local comedians? Anne Edmonds Sam Campbell Double Denim Ben Russell Greg Larsen For large scale comedy shows which venue do you think is the numero uno for big-name shows? What’s so special? The Comedy Store, The Comedy Lounge in Sydney or Spleen in Melbourne - sometimes they have really international big name guests drop in unannounced. And what about for discovering or emerging new talent? For emerging talent - Hemingway’s in Sydney. What’s your favourite comedian’s joke of all time? Kyle Kinane’s bit about insomnia, which devolves into a meditation on whether or not you could barbeque meat by shooting it over a volcano. I can’t explain it - you’ll just have to find it and listen. And your favourite one-liner? Mitch Hedberg: An escalator can never break: it can only become stairs. You should never see an Escalator Temporarily Out Of Order sign, just Escalator Temporarily Stairs. Sorry for the convenience. Where can we see you in the near future? I’ll be at Melbourne and Sydney Comedy Festivals also on TV in Utopia Season 4.

SPORTS

bbmlive.com

Liverpool (£513.7m), Chelsea (£505.m) and Arsenal (£439.2m) take up 7th to ninth spots, the Gunner stropping three places the previous financial year. Spurs sit just behind them in tenth with a turnover of £428.3m), a figure that may grow once their troubled new stadium is completed and fully operational next season.

Money, money money

In 1997 Yorkshire club Bradford City gained promotion to the Premier League on a weekly player salary budget averaging out at about £7,000 a week. That’s per player, per week. Roll forward a couple of decades and how the footballing world has changed. Barcelona’s Argentine superstar Lionel Messi is currently the best-paid player on the planet as he rakes in an astonishing £7.3million a month before tax – nearly twice the amount that Cristiano Ronaldo does at Juventus. Yes, a shade under £2 million a week. What a difference. French sports magazine L’Equipe’s publishes an annual salary report, revealing who the 10 best-paid footballers in Europe are going by monthly wage. And of these 10, five play in Spain, a two play in France and England respectively while just the one player features in Italy. The Barcelona star signed a new contract in November 2017 which propelled him to the top of the list, beating long-term rival Ronaldo in second who earns a only £4.1m a month before tax. In third is Antoine Griezmann of Atletico Madrid who earns £2.9m a month after his well-publicised contract renewal talks before the World Cup last northern summer. Paris Saint-Germain’s Brazilian Neymar is just behind Griezmann with a reported monthly earnings of £2.7m while former Liverpool striker Luis Suarez completes the top five with a monthly wage of £2.5m. Real Madrid’s Welshman Gareth Bale (£2.2m), Philippe Coutinho (£2m), Alexis Sanchez (£2m), Kylian Mbappe (£1.5m) and Arsenal’s Mesut Ozil (£1.4m) complete the list. Others who just missed out include Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandowski with a reported monthly earning of £1.2m in Germany’s Bundesliga and PSG’s Edinson Cavani on £1.3m. Even former Manchester United player, and some say failure, rakes in a million a month in French football, at the Qatari-ownded owned Paris club. But what of the clubs and their earnings? It’s no surprise that Real Madrid are the wealthiest club in the world, with revenue in 2017-18 of £750.9 million. Barcelona e leapfrogged Manchester United in the rankings (£690.4m), United just behind in third on £666.0m, despite what many would say two to three years of instability on the field with a succession of managers. Perhaps with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer back at the club, that may change. Their cross-town rivals Manchester City could

10

Italian giants Juventus £394.9m), Borussia Dortmund (£317.2m), Atletico Madrid (£304.4m), Inter Milan (£280.8m), AS Roma (£250.0m), Schalke (£243.8m), Everton (£212.9m), AC Milan (£207.7m) Newcastle United (£201.5m) and West Ham United make up the top 20 on £197.9m. Some big money there for sure and an economic impact study carried out for the Premier League recently revealed some more amazing numbers. According to the Ernst & Young report, the EPL and its 20 clubs contributed to the UK treasury £3.3 billion in taxes, including £1.1b in player taxes. The league’s total value to the British economy has been rated at £7.6 billion. Other numbers of interest include over £800 million invested in player youth academies across the country and the creation and support about 100,000 jobs. Broadcast in 188 countries and available in 1 billion homes there is n doubt the EPL is the biggest league on the planet.

All change at the Bridge

Mauricio Sarrri’s tenure at Chelsea looks to be ending after his team were thrashed 6-0 at Manchester City. The much-famed Sarri-Ball, which took Italian side Napoli to honours has failed in west London where a one-dimensional style of play has been found out by a growing number of teams. Sarri has already admitted it has been difficult to motivate hi players and if the dressing room is gone, then the manager usually follows. Why? After a promising start, with a gameplan that produced fast flowing football with the highest number of passes in games of any team, they have been found to have no Plan B, once found out. Defensively, Chelsea look a mess and if they lose players like Edin Hazard in the off-season, a major rebuild will be necessary. And with Manchester United now firing on all cylinders, a champions League spot is now looking increasingly impossible. United under Norwegian Ole Gunnar Solskjaer are a revelation, 11 games unbeaten, 10 wins and a renewed swagger not seen since the days of Alex Ferguson. They won’t win the league - that’s a two-horse race between City and Liverpool - but they may well claim that all-important fourth place.

FEBRUARY MVP: It has to be Manchester

United’s Paul Pogba.

What a change from the sullen, disinterested player under Jose Mourinho. Pogba is now playing with a freedom not permitted under Joe’s ‘Park the Bus’ formation. His eight goals in nine games under Solskjaer has given United another attacking option, and

he is clearly enjoying his game. A close second: Liverpool’s Sadio Mane - often forgotten because of the Mo Salah threat, but equally as important to the Reds title push.

Aussie Jones has England fired up

We can’t go through February without mentioning the Six-Nations rugby, a tournament this year that will see either England or Wales take the honours in 2019. The Welsh will host their old enemy in Cardiff in a couple of weeks, wth both countries currently sitting on two wins apiece. Wales came from behind to score a super win in Paris before finding little opposition in Italy while England produced a mighty display to win in Dublin and then thrashed a very poor France side 44-8 at Twickenham. 2019 is world cup year, and although New Zealand will be odds-on favourites again, don’t discount a challenge from at least one northern hemisphere country - on current form wales or England, but don’t rule out Ireland either. They have enough firepower to sort out their issues to be ready for Japan in September. England will meet France in their pool game in October and by then we will know if coach Eddie Jones really does have a aside capable of toppling the All Blacks.

Hewitt hates new tennis format

One-time Aussie bad boy Lleyton Hewitt has hit out at tennis officials, accusing them of not knowing what they’re doing by making radical changes to the Davis Cup. The Davis Cup, for uninitiated, is the world cup of mens tennis (The Fed cup being the women’s version) and Australia will be among 18 nations contesting the finals in Madrid in November after thumping Bosnia and Herzegovina 4-0 recently. “I don’t think they know what they are doing,” Hewitt said of tournament organisers. “I strongly disagree with it. I don’t think it’s the best thing for the competition and it’s not from what the Davis Cup is meant to be about. ’It’s taking away all the great things - the home and away ties and the best of five sets.”

League star faces life ban

Aussie rugby league has had its fair share of drunken idiots in the past year, but many thought the worst was behind them, until Ben Barba returned to the game after a stint playing for St Helens in the English Super League. Barba was the English games MVP - but now his career is almost certainly over after his new club, the North Queensland Cowboys tore up his contract recently over domestic violence allegations. The Cowboys tore up Barba’s contract before he had even played a game after a “significant” breach of his playing contract. Barba us alleges to have assaulted his partner, Ainslie Currie, at a Townsville casino on Australia Day. I’s not the first time Barba has been in trouble. Six years ago Currie was forced to deny being assaulted by Barba, then playing for the Canterbury Bulldogs, when photos of facial injuries, believed to be hers, were published in a newspaper. Then-Canterbury chief executive Todd Greenberg, who is now NRL boss, was criticised for not sacking him. This time the Cowboys did it for him, and Greenberg was quick to approve the decision, adding he didn’t think Barba would be allowed to play the game again.

Its spirited atmosphere and superb variety make it the best city to explore rooftop bars. Read through our guide to figure out which venue would best suit your plans for a night out with friends. Rooftop at QT

Good Heavens

Level 2, 79 Bourke St, Melbourne VIC 3000 Perched right above the American BBQ restaurant called Fancy Hank’s, Good Heavens is right smack in the heart of town. While the venue does serve BBQ dishes throughout the week with a brunch served on Sundays, it’s really known for its original cocktails served according to a retro theme. The bar also offers a good selection of wines and beer for those who are not that into cocktails. The bar is always busy but never overcrowded, making it the perfect rooftop escape to relax.

Imperial Hotel

2/8 Bourke St, Melbourne VIC 3000 Located right in the heart of Melbourne’s CBD, it doesn’t take much to see why the rooftop bar at the Imperial is a popular hangout. In addition, it’s also the third oldest pub in Melbourne, offering stunning views of the Parliament House and the skyline. The menu is expansive and complemented with cocktails and delicious pub grub. The venue is also known as one of the few rooftop bars that offer screening of live sporting events.

Upside rooftop bar

127 Brunswick St, Fitzroy VIC 3065 A snug little cocktail lounge at Brunswick Street, the Upside is perched above the famous Ich Ni Nana eatery while looking down on the Village People Hawker food hall. The lounge is largely indoors and created using recycled wood. The Upside offers patrons a relaxed urban setting to enjoy some really creative cocktails like the Thai Porn Star.

Considered one of Australia’s most populous cities in the state of Victoria, Melbourne rates very highly in terms of entertainment options and dining for visitors to the country. Each year millions of international and domestic visitors from other states congregate to experience the plethora of amusements that take over the city. Along with its festivals come the pop up eateries and the restaurants that jostle for attention. As a new migrant or someone planning on emigrating to Melbourne, we’ve taken the hassle out of sampling a selection of the best restaurants with our lineup of the following popular eateries. Uncle

15 Collins St, Melbourne VIC 3000 188 Carlisle St, St Kilda VIC 3182 Uncle’s St Kilda is located above Blackhearts and Sparrows and they have a second restaurant conveniently located on Level 1, 15 Collins St in Melbourne city. This trendy Vietnamese restaurant and bar is everything and more than you would expect from a eatery designed by Adele Winteridge (Foolscap Studio) and furniture by Northcote’s, Steve Edwards. The quality of the food is incredible and our must try dish is the Free range chicken slaw with fragrant herbs, chili and peanuts and the smoked red coconut curry with roasted cauliflower, crispy chickpeas and peanut and pomegranate. To drink, you have to try the Boulevardier, which is an awesome bourbon based cocktail.

400 Gradi

99 Lygon St, Brunswick East VIC 3057 From the outside looking in 400 Gradi might come off as just another ordinary pizzeria down Lygon Street. However, appearances can certainly be deceiving where this restaurant is concerned. Following restaurant owner Johnny Di Francesco´s recent success at the World Pizza Championship,

diners can be assured of experiencing nothing less than the best pizza at this restaurant in Melbourne. The restaurant’s own Margherita pizza stole the crown along with the palates of the judges at the competition. Deriving its name from the perfect temperature to cook pizza (400 Degrees), the atmosphere within its walls offers the ideal warmth for some hot comfort food on a cold evening. While it is recommended highly that one should sample the pizza, 400 Gradi offers a diverse selection of Italian fare to savour. There´s the crumb fried veal with stuffed olives and the pappardelle with herbs, pancetta and parmesan which are the two more popular dishes. For those who are looking for a spot of adventure to spice up their things-to-do-list in melbourne, the margherita gelato is a must.

5 Lire

116 Errol St, North Melbourne VIC 3051 In a bid to bring back an authentic taste of all things Italian, head chef and founder Laura Notarfrancesco´s restaurant the 5 Lire is already creating a buzz. Located just across the street from more established eateries, the 5 Lire has turned up the heat of competition in the neighbourhood. Diners over the weekend have to queue up for a table at the eatery and options such as communal seating have been included so as not to disappoint. For those visitors who don’t fancy staying in line, then an early start at 5 Lire, offers a savoury or sweet breakfast. Not too many restaurants in Melbourne have a fancy breakfast menu that includes ricotta hotcakes, coconut granola or poached pear. However, for those who hanker for a savoury start, try the mushroom and frittata or the mozzarella and Italian pork sausage paste with sourdough.

Deli. Drawing its inspiration from a typical New York Deli, 5 Points offers diners a sleek and refreshing saloon look that is devoid of the usual sandwich menu displays. As for the menu it’s relatively uncomplicated, but mature enough to host your friends and family for a meal. Aside from the sandwiches and the bagels that are standard yankee fare, the smoked pastrami and the Cobb salad laced with thick dressing are favourites among diners.

ABACUS

383 Chapel St, South Yarra VIC 3141 Located down Chapel Street, Abacus with its floor to ceiling glass paneled windows offers a fresh and summery feel for those who dine there. Priding itself on the freshest and seasonal produce of the local market, the restaurant even maintains its own bee hives. Unlike other restaurants in Melbourne, the Abacus offers some brunch time dishes with an experimental twist. Dishes like scrambled eggs with almond butter and croquettes are a crowd pleasers along with well prepared Padre Coffee at this restaurant in Melbourne. For evening drinks diners need not look around for pubs in Melbourne as the local drinks list at Abacus includes cocktails and wines. Nibbles dressed up on share plates are also available throughout the night.Photo Credits © Adobe Stock. Sports feature by Omar Soliman

ASK CRYSTAL email us staffwriter@bbmlive.com Dear Crystal, Three people check into a hotel. They pay £30 to the manager and go to their room. The manager suddenly remembers that the room rate is £25 and gives £5 to the bellboy to return to the people. On the way to the room, the bellboy reasons that £5 would be difficult to share among three people so he pockets £2 and gives £1 to each person. Now each person paid £10 and got back £1. So they paid £9 each, totalling £27. The bellboy has £2, totalling £29. Where is the missing £1? Yours, Brian

Ask Crystal

Dear Brian, It’s not that sort of problem page you cock.

Dear Crystal, I’m from Bournemouth but moved to Sydney about four years ago when the British economy started going down the tubes. Much as I love the lifestyle over here, I really can’t stand Aussies and have done my best to avoid talking to them whenever possible. At the end of last year, however, I started a new job and the whole place is pretty much staffed by locals. I tried to talk to as few of them as possible to begin with but, inevitably, I started getting dragged into their conversations about cricket and boat people. At first, I hated their mildly racist drivel but, as the months went on, they started to grow on me little by little. I even went to after

Don’t be disappointed when you wake up alone after a trip to the pub this week. That girl didn’t leave you completely alone. You’ve got a lot of tiny new friends. You might want to get to the doctor STAT, because Crystal is pretty sure she left you with a present. People with at work are going to start to talk about you excessively rubbing your groin against the corner of your desk if you don’t get that pubic lice taken care of.

Sagittarius

Like the song says: Girls just want to have fun. So don’t be so devastated this week when you’re out with that girl you’ve been pathetically pining over for the past year and she goes home with some other douche bag. You should’ve gotten the hint 8 months ago that she wasn’t interested in being anymore than friends and taken the offer off the table. Take heart, somebody will be able stand you one day, just not this one.

Aries

Maybe the foundations of capitalism are cracking, but things really aren’t that bad, you whiny spoiled bastard. Perhaps a new world wide depression would be a good thing. It’s time for our soft cookie doe asses to start to toughening up. Take a break from facebooking and your cell phone and go talk to your grandparents about what their hard times were like. Society is progressing so much that now

work drinks with them one night. Looking bac k, I should have seen the warning signs then. Instead I ignored them, and before I knew it I was watching Aussie rules football, wearing a vest top and spreading vegemite on my kangaroo steak. But it wasn’t until I found myself laughing at an episode of Packed to the Rafters that I realised I had hit rock bottom. Please help. Yours, Sheila Dear Sheila, Oh dear. Sounds like a pretty serious case of Aussieitis to me Sheila. Do you even remember your real name? The only cure is to go cold turkey and boost you r pommy blood - cell count. Just lock yourself in a room with the Coronation Street omnibus, several ‘pints’ of warm beer and stick your feet in the fridge. That should remind you what it’s like to be British. Dear Crystal, Can you name four days which start with the letter “T”? Yours, Brian Dear Brian, Seriously, piss off.

we’re taking the simplest of pleasures for granted. Go ask grandpa what it was like taking a shit in an out-house and see if your cell-phone not always having service seems like such a tragedy.

Pisces

Yes, you are an idiot, but that argument is not going to hold up in an argument with your Mrs. For some reason she’s going to have to probe for a deeper meaning and you’re going to have to stand there and take it. That is unless you cut the situation off at the pass. As soon as she walks in the room to bitch at you for leaving your wet towels on the bathroom floor again, you throw her on the nearest soft surface and proceed to eat the red snapper. She’ll find it a bit harder for her to yell at you with your head between her legs.

Taurus

Don’t do it. You shouldn’t slit your wrists just because you can’t stand to look at yourself naked in the bathroom mirror anymore. Try switching to light-beer and not being a lazy bastard who wastes his weekend sitting in front of the TV all day Saturday. If that doesn’t strike your fancy, try appetite suppressants like cigarettes and cocaine.

Gemini

Hurry up and go right now and delete the browsing history on your computer. Your girlfriends little niece is going to be coming by and want to get on you’re the internet to look up Dora The Explorer clips on Youtube and she doesn’t need to see you that you shoot your man juice into dirty socks when watching girls take it up the ass then suck the bloke off.

Remember you’re a grown person and if you punch a kid you might devastate their face, plus they might start to cry even more. And oh yeah, there’s that whole thing about child abuse.

Scorpio

You get bombarded with words all day, every day, but this week you’re going to have to pay attention. Most of it is just stupid shit coming out of the holes in people’s faces, but you better listen for a change. There are going to be key phrases you’re going to need to give a second thought to. Phrases like, “Sir, you have insufficient funds” and “I’m leaving you” or “The kid is yours.”

Virgo

You know how you lost all that money on the John Jones fight. Don’t worry, the world is going to reward you for not throwing him under the bus like everyone else has. Go to the track and lay it all on the first dog name you like the sound of. That way at least one bitch will pay out this week.

Libra

By the great Gods of Gannamush thy name is thrice cursed! If you value your life mortal, then you would do well to change your name by deed poll to that of the one predicted to save all mankind with his wonder and beauty. And lo, that name is Chris Kamara – King of All Bradford.

Leo

You always used to laugh at the actors in those Just for Men adverts. Well the jokes on you, you grey-haired freak because there’s definitely a few white-looking strands appearing in those locks of yours. Don’t panic. Help is at hand. Actually, we lied. You’re screwed… oops, there’s another peeking through.

Days Like This Festival is at the forefront of Sydney’s one-day festival scene. Taking place on Saturday the 9th of March, Days Like This is a unique soiree that in recent years asserted its revered standing through incredible bookings such as The Black Madonna, Marcel Dettmann and Fatima Yamaha. This year’s lineup is doing little to curb punters predictions that 2019 might just be the best lineup yet. Amongst the list of huge international names that will be headlining Days Like This Festival, there are a few Aussies that are not only putting our nation on the map for their homegrown talents, but are doing us seriously proud. Whether they’re still based down-under dominating the music scene, or they’ve fled the nest ready to conquer other continents, we’re simple stoked that we’re being represented. Here are 5 local acts that you can’t miss at Days Like This.

CC:DISCO!

Dubbed the queen of Melbourne’s dance music scene, CC:DISCO! is a name not only on the lips of those who’ve witnessed her at local festivals Strawberry Fields and Pitch Music and Arts, but partygoers across the globe. With a new record label under her wing – CC:Editions – and having shared the stage in 2018 with artists such as Denis Sulta and Horse Meat Disco, she’s one to watch at Days Like This, and will most likely take the cake for your afternoons peak. Unfortunately for Melbourne folk, she’s about to move to the belly of the beast – Europe – so let’s give her a proper send off.

Kali

Arguably one the lesser-known names on this lineup, Kali is not to be underestimated – she’s a name you’ll want to know. A veteran in Sydney’s music scene, Kali has played for Boiler Room, runs a radio show on FBI Radio alongside running Picnic Touring & Events, one of Sydney’s premier electronic music agents. Oh, and she’s a shoe-in to deliver a good time, so make sure you check her out…

Made In Paris

Sydney-based Made in Paris may just take the cake for local rising star. Having warmed the stage for artists such as Stephan Bodzin, and Marcel Dettman at smalltown in 2018. She seems to be continuing on an upward trajectory with her forward thinking, cutting edge techno productions. If something a bit heavier is more to your palate, she might just be the one for you…

Mall Grab

Australia’s poster-child claim to fame, Mall Grab, will be returning to Australia, sure to be a peak set of Days Like This 2019. Winning the world over with his lo-fi house productions and his ability to keep the dance-floor going, Mall Grab is undoubtedly Australia’s pride and joy. His upcoming Days Like This set is sure to go absolutely bonkers due to the whole home ground advantage situation… so definitely one you won’t want to miss.

Willaris K

On the softer dance/electronic side of the Days Like This lineup, Willaris K seems to be entirely in a league of his own. This Aussie grown artist has become a household name in Australia’s diverse music scene, getting regular plays on Triple J as well as having played international stages such as Coachella. Having just released a brand new album ‘Alchemy’ you’re sure to hear some new material and some old at his Days Like This set in 2019.

Eat & Drink here: Editors Pick Slims Rooftop, Darlinghurst 47-49 William Street, Darlinghurst www.hydeparkhouse.com

Head upstairs at the renovated Hyde Park House for views of the park and Asian-inspired drinks. The set-up is quite green with lots of foliage, and you can sit at a high, low or picnic table. The food is modern Japanese with options like sushi rolls, truffle oil edamame, pan-fried pork, veggie gyoza and wasabi karaage chicken.

Flint

Just as we were wrapping up this issue we received the devasting news that the original king of rave, Keith Flint was sadly found dead at his home aged just 49. Keith was a household name with those growing up in the UK throughout the 90’s and the band continued to have ongoing success since. Fans in Australia would have been among the last to experience the artist perform having just completed their Australasia tour earlier this month. The dance world will never be the same and industry colleagues including The Chemical Bros, Chase & Status and Jo Whiley are taking to social media to share their fond memories of the much loved iconic artist. On 4th March The Prodigy announce on Twitter “It is with deepest shock and sadness that we can confirm the death of our brother and best friend Keith Flint, a true pioneer, innovator and legend. He will be forever missed.” Later via Instagram,

bandmate Liam Howlett, confirmed that Keith had sadly taken his own life. Our thoughts go out to Keith’s friends and family at this sad time.

MUSIC NEWS

bbmlive.com LOCAL ACTS YOU NEED TO SEE AT PITCH MUSIC & ARTS

INTERVIEW

Without a doubt, one of 2019’s most anticipated events is the Pitch Music & Arts festival in Victoria. In only two years the threeday festival has gone on to become one of Australia’s most talked about events. You can bet your house on it they received this reputation in no small part due to their incredible musical programme that is worthy of any international festival. Not only is their upcoming edition following that trend again, but they also announced this year they will add more emphasis on their visual arts programme.

Gavin James Talks Bliss n ESO, Ed Sheran, Sam Smith and Chicken Wings Hey Gavin, how excited are you to return to Australia? I can’t wait to get back to Australia, the last tour was amazing and while there I recorded a track with Bliss N ESO that went onto win an Aria Award which is crazy! You’ve kicked off your World Tour with shows across a good chunk of Europe already, how has it been so far? The Tour has been Epic I have my band with me this time around, with so many back to back shows, we have been all heathy eating avocados, salads and loads of water to keep the voice strong You’ve opened for some massive acts – Ed Sheeran, Sam Smith, & Niall Horan just to name a few. What were these shows like? They are all great guys, Ed offered me the gig while in Whelans pub at 2am and Niall is a legend we did his US tour last year and Sam’s US tour the year before! How’s it been performing songs from your latest album now that it’s been out for a few months? It’s been great to finally play the songs from the new album and its been amazing to see the reaction when everyone is singing the new songs back. I can’t wait to play them in Australia! You started 2019 headlining Dublin’s New Years Eve festival. How did it feel kicking off the new year in your home town? It was unreal to be playing and counting down New Years to the nation. Only a few years back I was singing 7 nights a week, down the road in Temple Bar! You’ve just reached 1 billion streams on Spotify which is a MASSIVE number. Has this been one of those “pinch yourself” moments? It really hard to comprehend that many streams, and it’s an amazing start to my new album! How have you been prepping to get you ready for the Australian shows? The touring so far in the US and Europe have been getting better every night so with the tour ending in Australian we will be on top form! Will you get some time out while you’re here to check out the sights? Unfortunately this time around it’s a quick trip but looking forward to meeting Austrian fans! Are there any Australian artists you would love to collaborate with? I just meet, Guy Sebastian in Amsterdam last week he’s got a great voice! When you’re not doing music what else do you enjoy? I’m mad into films: any time I have free time I’ll try to find the closest cinema. I went to see Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald twice; other than that I went to see Bohemian Rhapsody. People have said that it didn’t reflect real life, but I loved it.. And finally, which city you’ve toured to date has the best chicken wings? Good question...but which city in Australia has the best chicken wings? Please let me know Get Tickets to see Gavin James live at Troubadour-music.com

The 2019 lineup is stacked and filled with international names most are familiar with (Four Tet, Daniel Avery, Sven Vath etc.), but some of our BBM readers might not be so familiar with the locals playing this year. Remedy that with our selection of locals you need to see at Pitch…

Banoffee The Melbourne-born artist might be the most accomplished local on this year’s lineup. Not only is she a successful solo artist, but she is also a highly competent session musician who is a handpicked member of Charli XCX’s band on her recent run as the official support act for Taylor Swift’s 2018 USA tour (Banoffee also supported Charli XCX on her last Australian tour). Banoffee makes highly infectious electro-pop which, in her own words, are ‘inspired by the sparse minimalism of Arthur Russell, melded with the straight-talking of Laurie Anderson and the sass of Destiny’s Child’. Her live shows are an explosion of fashion, dance and fun. Asked how she would describe her onstage presence, she said: ‘The Matrix meets a scientist who also likes to jog and do the occasional Zumba class’.

Made in Paris

If you are after melodic techno than you can’t look past Made In Paris. The Upon Access label owner has pushed all the right buttons lately, finally fulfilling many industry insider’s predictions of her being the ‘one to watch’. She has become many promoters artist of choice to warm up dancefloors, and she recently supported Stephan Bodzin on his Australian tour as the official warm-up DJ in Melbourne and Sydney. Her productions are gaining massive momentum, and she has become a permanent fixture on local festival bookings. Made In Paris should be your first port of call at Pitch.

Merve

Merve started her career in Melbourne by working as a music industry professional booking and managing acts before going on to become a DJ herself. In a small space of time, she has gone on to play alongside prominent international artists including Objekt, The Black Madonna, Honey Dijon, Barbara Tucker, Motor City Drum Ensemble, Jane Fitz and Virginia. Depending on the event, Merve is equipped to play anything from house to techno to electro, a skill which seen her play during peak slots at festivals such as Golden Plains, Let Them Eat Cake, Hopkins Creek and Strawberry Fields.

Retiree

Retiree is the musical project of three Sydney/ Melbourne artists Matt Crowley, Tori Holleman & Marco Vella. Over four summers they’ve steadily amalgamated they individual interests into a unique emulsion of strongly rhythmic and emotional music. Their live set throws all their keyboards, guitar pedals and woodblocks on stage, resulting in a sound that is balearic and 80’s sounding, yet very much of the moment.

Toni Yotzi

Over the last year, this Perth-born DJ has rightfully accumulated enough hype to keep her going for at least a decade. Her unique sets have endeared her to those growing tired of the same rehashed sounds, and her crate digging skills are the perfect tonic for those bored of the musical status quo. Her sets can include anything from dank, underground techno rollers to fidgety electro and steaming breaks, sometime all in the same set. Go to Pitchfestival.com.au for more info…

3 of Europe’s top festival promoters talk travel and festivals STRAWBERRIES & CREEM

Chris Jammer, Festival CEO Strawberries & Creem takes place on Saturday 15th June at Haggis Farm, Cambridge www.strawberriesandcreem.com If the festival wasn’t in the country it is, where would you love to hold it? Personally I think Cambridge UK is the most perfect spot for Strawberries & Creem as it is currently. However If we were to move it I think it would have to celebrate local music and a place producing amazing music in my opinion at the moment is South Africa. So don’t write off Strawberries & Creem Cape Town in the near future! What’s your top 3 bucket list travel destinations? 3 bucket list destinations that I haven’t yet been to are: Japan, South Africa and India. Where’s the best place you’ve ever partied in the world? Buenos Aires, Argentina What’s been your most exciting travel moment? Doing a street party in Rio Brazil was a night I’ll never forget What’s the funniest thing that’s happened to you on a plane? I met a member of cabin crew out partying in Spain one time and he was working on my flight home. When he was doing the final thankyou he asked everyone to give me a round of applause for no apparent reason other than being nice to him! It was rather awkward. What’s your spiritual home? South America, Bolivia or Ecuador

FLY OPEN AIR

Tom Ketley, Festival Director FLY Open Air takes place on 18-19th May at Hopetoun House, Edinburgh, www.flyopenair.co.uk If the festival wasn’t in the country it is, where would you love to hold it? Ibiza What’s your top 3 bucket list travel destinations? Drive through Italy (Lake Como, Florence, Rome, Amalfi Coast), Burning Man, Bora Bora Which country/city/place have you been to which we should be adding to our bucket lists? Ghana. Still to this day the best place I’ve ever been to... The beaches are amazing and empty, the people are so friendly and you can live like a king on a shoestring budget. Also encountered some absolutely mind boggling things during my time there. Tulum, Mexico too. Amazing place - so good to relax but also explore if you rent a car and go cenote hunting. Where’s the best place you’ve ever partied in the world? La Laguna Bali.

What’s been your most exciting travel moment? Not sure if you can class skulling a 2 litre bottle of strongbow on the Glasgow to Dundee megabus as travelling but breaking out of my call centre job aged 18 to attend the twins [Michael & Jacks] 18th at Dundee University Union is still to this day the most excited I have ever been for an away day and rivalled my answer for best place I’ve ever partied in the world! What’s the funniest thing that’s happened to you on a plane? Flying Glasgow to Ibiza - absolutely bananas flight and inevitably grounded in Paris. Most memorable holiday / travel? I recently took my mum to Japan and we did Toyko, Kyoto, Osaka & Hiroshima. It was an amazing trip with everything from big cities to natural beauty. Really cool country, recommend! Where’s your next holiday/trip to? I’m off to New Zealand next month for my cousin’s wedding but I’m then going to stop off in Australia for 2 weeks and do a bit of travelling on west coast this time.

HOSPITALITY ON THE BEACH

Ed Priest, Promotions Assistant Hospitality on the Beach takes place 11-15th July at The Garden, Tisno, Croatia www.hospitalityonthebeach.com What’s your top 3 bucket list travel destinations? That’s a tricky one. The rocky mountains in Colorado seem out of this world. There are so many places in the middle-east that I’d love to visit too. Mainland China would definitely be top of the list though, such a rich history and dance music is really blowing up there so would be the perfect voyage. I’ve always wanted to go to Canada and Jerusalem too. Which city have you been to which we should be adding to our bucket lists? Lisbon and Porto are two fantastic cities, wonderful people, and incredible food, Portugal’s still one of my favourite destinations for sure if you can do both in one journey I’d recommend. Budapest is beautiful, the old-town is something out of a fairy-tale and the Basilica is a sight I’ll never forget. The Greek island of Rhodes is definitely up there too. Where’s the best place you’ve ever partied in the world? Probably at an abandoned Military training facility in Wiltshire. It was one of the best parties of my life. Music was spot on all night/day and the weather was beautiful, that was a good weekend. We found loads of empty bullets on the floor, and my mate still wears one around his neck to this day. What’s been your most exciting travel moment? I’m not as well travelled as I’d like to be, and there’s lots of the world I’d still like to see. I’m quite a chilled out traveller too, and would rather mosey and lounge around exploring at my own pace than satisfy the adrenaline junky in me. Swimming with Dolphins in Mexico as a kid I guess was pretty cool.

Swim with Whale Sharks at Coral Bay

Ningaloo Whale Shark Season: March to June

Western Australia has one of the most sparsely populated, wild and beautiful coastlines in Australia. World famous destinations such as Monkey Mia and Perth are well known, but there is so much more to this stunning part of the world to explore. Coral Bay is a picture perfect seaside town and a popular stop on many hop on hop off coach journeys along the coast, and rightly so. The underwater paradise of Ningaloo Reef, a World Heritage-listed marine reserve, is located just offshore from Coral Bay and is home to an amazing array of marine life including turtles, manta rays, humpback whales, spectacular coral gardens and the largest fish in the sea – the whale shark. In fact so many whale sharks congregate at Ningaloo there is nowhere else on earth where you’ll find so many in one place, which makes Coral Bay the top place to swim with these gentle giants. Docile and calm, whale sharks can grow up to 40 feet long and live for 70 years. More shark than whale, they were named whale sharks primarily because of their huge size and pose no risk to humans. The chance to swim alongside one of these ocean giants is one not to be missed and any visit to Coral Bay isn’t complete without having this once in a lifetime experience. There are hundreds of tour companies who operate snorkel and dive trips with the sharks, but arguably the best is Coral Bay Ecotours. Their whopping 9 hour Whale Shark Safari begins with a snorkel among the beautiful coral gardens of the inner reef, where tropical fish, reef sharks and other species live in huge numbers, then it’s on to the outer reef to search for the stars of the show - the whale sharks. Once one is located divers and snorkelers get up to an hour’s swimming time with them, so as not to disturb their natural behaviour. Coral Bay is a gem of a place and the perfect jumping off point for out of this world experiences on the Ningaloo Reef. Swimming alongside a 40 ft whale shark in one of the most beautiful reefs in the world is just one more reason why the coast of Western Australia is such an awe inspiring place.

Drop Bear Adventures Talk 4WD Camping Tours On Fraser Island What advice do you have? Is self-driving safe? Driving any vehicle comes with a risk but we allow our guests to have a go at driving in a controlled environment where there is full communication between the tour guide in the lead car and the tag a long cars following behind. We show our guests a safety briefing video before heading to the island and allow only guests over the age of 21 with a full driver’s license to drive. The driving is taken slow and steady and the guide is always there to ensure drivers are feeling comfortable and safe. Taking things at your own pace is a key bit of advice, as well as not allowing others in the car to influence your driving speed. Stick to the speed limit and stick to the car in fronts tyre tracks. Why do you recommend people do a guided tour? You get to learn so much more about the island with a tour guide. We share the history of the island, the culture, the true story behind Fraser Islands name, teach you about the flora and fauna and all the wildlife that inhabits there. It’s a great way to see all the best spots with a fun, passionate and experienced tour guide whilst having a go at driving on the sand in a safe and controlled environment. A great way to meet fellow travellers too. Do your passengers get a chance to drive the 4WD’s? If you’re over 21 years old and have held a full driver’s license for more than a year then you can drive on the world’ largest sand island!

nings on the island. Remember to lock away your food in the car to prevent dingoes coming in to your camp area.

Fraser Island Tours - Choosing the right tour for your trip

Can you give us a few top tips to help people choose the right tour for your trip? Do your research! There is plenty of information out there about each tour and how it is different. Read up on Trip Advisor. This is your best friend when it comes to honest reviews about tours. Check out social media – it’s a great way to see how involved the tour company is and a good insight in to the company itself Speak to fellow travellers – see where they’ve been and what they thought Ring up the companies! If it’s a good tour company they won’t sell you their tour if they don’t think it’s right for you. They should be honest, tell you what the tour company is about and recommend another company if their’s doesn’t suit your needs.

Fraser Island Wildlife / Sea Life What should we be looking out for? What wildlife can we expect to see? Dingoes! Goannas, snakes, spiders, birds.

What do passengers usually ask? Are there any questions that regularly come up? A main question is our itinerary which is stated on our website for each tour.

What’s the rarest animal or reptile you’ve seen? What Sea Life might we see? Dolphins, sharks, stingrays, sea snakes, turtles – top of Indian head is a great place to spot them!
