Kick off the World Cup at Coogee Bay Hotel With World Cup season just around the corner, football fans are in for a treat as Coogee Bay Hotel prepares for a month-long takeover of burgers, big screens and footy-themed frolics. Launching a dedicated ‘Fan Zone’ to celebrate this year’s anticipated FIFA tournament, Coogee’s legendary beachside hangout is pulling out all the stops… As World Cup fever slowly sweeps the nation, football fans from all corners of the globe will join forces to watch in trepidation as the results of the 2018 FIFA World Cup dramatically unfold. From Brazil to France, to Australia to Russia, 32 teams will battle against one another in a bid to win this year’s esteemed championship title. For those who aren’t planning to trek across the Pacific, Coogee Bay Hotel will be swinging open the doors of its iconic music venue to host a hub of FIFA-fuelled fun. SELINA’S legendary stage, which has welcomed all kinds of musical greats over the years, (everyone including Nirvana and INXS to Midnight Oil and Cold Chisel have performed there) will be transformed into the ultimate football playground with retro arcade games, soccer-themed amusements, live match screenings and a throng of live music and entertainment. A bit of an institution on the sports scene, its enviable beachside location together with its screenladen Sports Bar and sprawling garden are more than enough to draw in the crowds, but with the addition of this year’s World Cup Fan Zone, things are about to heat up for bonafide footy fans.
World Cup ’18 Fan Zone From 15 June, SELINA’S will become a bubbling hub of activity, with plenty of football paraphernalia to get you in the spirit. Offering a fun-filled space for all to enjoy - you can just as easily rock up with your mates as you can with the kids - this playing field comes stacked to the rafters with all kinds of sporting amusements, along with a jam-packed calendar of activities, all of which are entirely free. Football nets adorn the walls and ceilings, whilst sofas and giant football beanbags are perfectly positioned beneath the mammoth 250 inch projection screen, where you can catch all the live action. But it’s not just about sitting down to watch the game, this immersive space has enough to keep you entertained from morning, noon and night. Look forward to limited edition burgers and buckets of chilled Bud, football-themed trivia and singles’ mixer nights (singleton’s wanting to find their football match should clear a space in their diaries on 27 June) and FIFA gaming comps every Saturday where you can show off your soccer skills to win some great prizes. Live bands will take to the stage every Friday featuring some of the area’s best local talent (Rackett, Marvell and Shag Rock are set to play over the course of the games), and for one night only Coogee United FC will hang up their football shirts to strut their stuff on SELINA’S stage (yes, there’ll be swimwear) in a hope to be crowned Mr World Cup. Prepare to get excited ladies. For kids (and big kids) there’ll be gaming sections dotted around (think arcade games, foosball, air hockey, Playstations and virtual headsets), and don’t forget to dust off your best Aussie soccer colours to support the lads, and be in with a chance of winning some fab World Cup memorabilia. Optus Sport will broadcast live from SELINA’S during the Australia vs. France game, and they’ll be interviewing throughout the course of the evening, so be sure to get your game face on - or indeed bet on who you think will win, as there’ll be betting facilities both in the Fan Zone and Sports Bar. This could be your chance to win some big bucks! Lastly, in a build up to the final, the Fan Zone is set to throw an epic closing party with live DJs, games and exciting giveaways. And for those wanting to carry on the celebrations, you can always hole up at the hotel to make a indulgent weekend of it. Excited much?

Tonite at the gym, a man told me he thought Italy could win the 2018 World Cup. I told him they had the same chances as the USA. He told me I was crazy & knew nothing about world football. I said “you mean soccer?” He walked away.
Q: Why was the best footballer in the world asked to tidy up their room?
Q: I left two Australia tickets on my dashboard yesterday.
Q: Did you hear about the soccer player who lived passed a 100?
A: Someone smashed the window and left two more. Talking World Cup at lunch a ‘lad’ joined in with the hot take of ‘you know, we put a run together who knows maybe we go one more than we did last time’ I asked who’s we, he said ‘us, the U.S’. I was gonna tell him, but he said he’s got his jersey ready, so why spoil the fun. Lol Q: I left two Australia tickets on my dashboard yesterday. A: Someone smashed the window and left two more.

Guy: It’s just like soccer, just because there’s a goalie doesn’t mean you can’t score. Hey, did ya know I’m part of a soccer team? (Really?) Yeah, hopefully I score tonight. Girl, can I get your Jersey? (What?) You know your name a number?
I gave my wife $50 and told her to go out on Thursday and leave me in peace while I watched World Cup football.

“You will,” I said. “It’s got to last you five weeks.”

British pubs in Melbourne
Pubs Showing The World Cup Live in Melbourne Watch the FIFA World Cup live at The Turf Bar in Melbourne The 2018 edition of the World Cup takes place in Russia and lucky for us in Melbourne it means we’re set for a month of late nights and good times as we get overly patriotic, cuddly with random people in bars and enjoy the sports that brings more people together than any other in the world. The Turf Bar in Melbourne has built up an excellent reputation for live international matches and this World Cup will be bigger and better than ever as they have secured an extended license to bring you the best of the live action during the month-long festival of football. Watch the Socceroos mix it up with the World’s greats. Will Messi finally win a world Cup? Can Neymar inspire Brazil to Glory? Come and find out Live and Loud here at Turf. 131 Queen Street 03 9670 1271 www.turfbar.com.au
The pub culture in Melbourne has evolved as an integral cultural experience and for those visiting the city its one not to be missed. Much like coffee or trams, pubs, especially British inspired pubs, have a nostalgic feel to them that brings together friends and families. Read on for suggestion on where to step into first with our list of popular British pubs in Melbourne.
The
Woodlands Hotel
Down Sydney Road, is where diners will find the treasured landmark of the Woodlands Hotel. Its façade may mimic the appearance of an European Castle or a colonial firehouse in the UK but inside its typically Victorian. The Woodlands Hotel prides itself on local produce and all taps are primed with nothing but the best of local brews. The high timber ceilings in the pub area help to keep the place cool, while the atrium outside the hotel offers a homely setting decorated with numerous in-door plants. Upstairs there’s no timber or pub feel for diners to experience but more of an Oriental look and feel. Lit up with Asian lanterns and brick red walls the setting is quite cosy with a menu that’s dedicated to the meat lovers. 84-88 Sydney Rd Coburg 3058
The Tote
Situated down Queen Street, the Turf Bar is a very old-school pub that is big on sports, with three huge screens plus private booths for preferential viewing pleasure. The pub is dubbed as the best place to catch your favourite sporting event live. With the pub’s advanced surround sound system, the game is literally brought to life. The menu offers delicious grills, a warm and friendly atmosphere where sporting fans can order the traditional pub grub fare, steak or even pizza. During frenzied football season or ‘footy’ the pub serves up some amazing footy specials for fans. The very Victorian era setting inside the pub offers a relaxed atmosphere to savour a drink or even host a casual business meeting.
The Tote offers a piece of nostalgic history to anyone who visits this pub in Melbourne. For those of you who are rockers and love a joint that plays some live music, then the Tote is just up your street. It is reported that the Tote pub is the only one of its kind to host a full blown protest, when licensing laws threatened to shut down its doors forever in 2010. The Tote has been the place to hang out for live music since the 80s. Bands still play live regularly with weekly gig line-ups painted on the side of the building. Outside the building is where guests will find the band room which resembles a gig set up in a high school gym. However, the look should not put one off as the likes of Mudhoney and Fugazi have graced its boards. As for the food, there’s burgers, Chiko Rolls, poutine, double decker tacos and much more to keep the head banging going on for longer.

Wendy’s Secret Garden Behind Wendy’s Secret Garden is a true to life heartwarming story of love. When artist Brett Whiteley passed away in 1992, his grief stricken widow, Wendy Whiteley channeled her love and emotional tumult into developing an abandoned train yard space into a garden. Situated at the bottom of a foothill where her home in Lavendar Bay is located, the garden has been
tended and nurtured by two gardeners and Whiteley herself for the last 20 years. From herbs, native plants and exotic species of greenery the garden has been carefully landscaped with pathways supported by timber balustrades. There are paths and benches to sit on to take in the beauty and cobbled steps that offer spaces for seating as well. The garden also offers breathtaking views of the Sydney harbour and beautifully frames areas of North Sydney and the harbour bridge. CRYSTAL BALLS
ASK CRYSTAL
Our very own resident psychic, Crystal Balls, tells your fortune for the month in her very very special way… GEMINI *Horoscope not detected* Please check all devices are connected to the Zodiac then restart your crystal ball. If problem persists, please call a Microsoft technician, voodoo priest or Mystic Meg.
VIRGO You wake up one morning, check your face in the bathroom mirror and discover – horror of horrors – that you’ve turned into Mumm-Ra The Ever Living, the chief antagonist in the animated series Thundercats. You really should read the side-effects of that new shampoo you’ve been using, specifically the bit under side-effects which reads “warning: may cause hives, flakiness or turn user into immortal undead entity with a cat fixation”. Give it a few days and the effects should wear off - although I’d stop using that new moisturising cream too, unless you want to look like Krang from the Ninja Turtles.
TAURUS A routine shopping trip for a bedside table turns into a nightmare when you stray from the path in IKEA and get lost for eight months in the living room section.
You survive by foraging for dropped sweets and building a makeshift base out of settee cushions and spare bookcase parts. Occasionally, you’ll set fire to a stool in a bid to catch the attention of passers-by and staff, all to no avail. It’s only after a failed suicide attempt, when you try to hang yourself from an extendable lamp, that you realise you’re going to have to take matters into your own hands. Striking out to find the path with your imaginary friend “Pilson”, who is basically a light bulb with a face drawn on it, you spend days wading through low-priced sofa-beds and lumbar-supporting chairs before reaching the kitchen section and collapsing from weariness. By sheer chance, your prone body is spotted by a Chinese couple arguing about dishwashers and you are taken back to civilisation.

As a result of you constantly missing social engagements because you’re obsessed with playing Words with Friends, you lose all your friends. Oh the irony.

LIBRA Your desperate need for cash reaches a new low this week when you agree to star in a “leaked” sex tape with Susan Boyle. Apparently the Hairy Angel is trying to reinvent herself as “Iggy Azalea for grannies”. The strap-on scene is particularly gruesome. I dreamed a dream? More like a bloody nightmare.
ARIES First Robbie Williams, now David Attenborough. Who will be next on your list of celebrities who you think have died but actually it was someone with a similar name?

SCORPIO Sorry Scorpio, my herpes are really flaring up today. So I’m trying to fashion a scratching device from
chopsticks. Meñana.
CANCER You start seeing the actress who plays the “new girl at Coles” in those annoying adverts. You wouldn’t think it to look at her, but she’s a right dirty minx. You should see what she can do with an aubergine and a bunch of grapes. No wonder it’s Woolworths who are the “fresh food people”. Egads!
CAPRICORN The first person you meet after reading this will be responsible for your death – unless you kill them before they get the chance. Do it! Do it now!
PISCES Aunt Crystal won’t be doing a horoscope for Pisces this month due to hangoverrelated reasons. BBM would like to apologise for any inconvenience.
SAGITTARIUS You’re walking down the street when you spot that annoyingly smug git who does the Youi car insurance adverts. Ten minutes later, you are in prison for GBH after beating him to a bloody pulp.
Crystal is always here (except when she’s being a cougar about town, showing the young women of today how to grind up against the guys) to help answer your problems. Our agony aunt-come-psychic knows best when it comes to problems… Dear Crystal,
When I was a young boy growing up in Britain during the 80s, our school was visited by a number of minor celebrities, including Rolf Harris, Gary Glitter and Jimmy Savile – yet not one of them attempted to interfere with, or molest, me in any way. Naturally, this has really knocked my confidence and made me depressed. Am I really that unattractive? Savile used to be into corpses for God’s sake! What’s wrong with me? Yours Roger
Dear Roger
People are quick to offer sympathy to the victims of these monsters, but they often forget the youngsters who were not directly affected or traumatised in any way by these heinous crimes. If you really want to be interfered with by a celebrity, I’m more than happy to come round your house and jam my fist up your nipsy. Then the healing can begin – both psychologically and internally.
Dear Crystal,
I could have sworn I just saw you on an old episode of Have I Got News For You. Have you ever been on TV? Yours Chris
Dear Chris,
You probably saw Boris Johnson,
people confuse us all the time. It’s the hair.
Dear Crystal, Och, as a proud Scotsman, I’m canny depressed by the vote against independence in the auld home country. I don’t mind telling ye, I’ve had it up tae here with the English. They take our oil, vote the Tories in, and think it’s oh-so funny to take the piss out of Scottish stereotypes. Well I’m nay impressed. As a professional haggis salesman, I’m sick of my taxes going to London when I barely have enough money to keep my family supplied with Irn-Bru, shortbread and Celtic T-shirts. Jings, crivens and help ma bob, we’re all doomed I tell ya, doomed! Is there anything you can do to cheer me up? There’s only so much of the Krankies one man can stomach. Yours, Jock McTavish
Dear Jock, I’ll cheer you up alright. God the Scottish accent turns me on. There’s just something about a bloke wearing a skirt that gets my juices flowing. If you ever want me to toss your caber, get in touch and I’ll turn your “yes” into an “oh god yes, yes, yes!” This is one union you won’t want to break from.

Old Lane Street Eats Cheat does not have to mean junk food that’s tasteless as Old Lane Street Eats proves to anyone who dines at this mini China Town. South East Asian cuisine is
what’s on the menu at this eatery and it packs a punch with so amazing spices. The staple Asian dishes of curry, satay or bao to noodles and flavourful rice are just the tip of the offerings. Popular favourites at the Old Lane include the Marmite Chicken bao (spring onion, carrot, chicken and Marmite) and the Roti John (bun filled with sambal, beef, Sriracha, egg, onion, and plenty of kewpie mayo) . Another plus point of dining at the Old Lane is its BYO policy. 17/68 Roe St, Northbridge WA 6003
Gypsy Tapas House Having begun in 2006 by Una Healy and Stefan Armentano, Gypsy Tapas House has grown into a gathering place for locals to savour good food and now on occasion live music as well. Share plates at Gypsy Tapas are a favourite among the modest travelers and the variety it offers just under AUS $10 is amazing. More recently the establishment opened the ‘Gypsy Karavan’ right beside the popular Tapas House. Wednesday nights at the Karavan, are themed nights. Here the Karavan takes on different feel with its Moroccan Night and dishes out live
music in an intimate setting. In other words its dinner plus a show and what could be better than food, sangria, wine, music and art all rolled into one evening? High St &, Queen St, Fremantle WA 6160
Tommy Sugo If you’re a lover of Italian food then Tommy Sugo has the perfect fix –affordable delicious dishes of pasta. That’s not all, the establishment also runs a BYO policy as well to boot. Sugo is where travellers and residents alike will drop in for some delicious homemade pasta dishes that hold on to the authentic Italian tradition of keeping things simple. Clean eating and health fans have not been forgotten at Tommy Sugos and the menus also include gluten free and other alternatives to choose from. Another distinctly Italian trait being good Coffee has not been forgotten at Sgo’s and they put out their own delicious blend of coffee. 225 Oxford St, Leederville WA 6007
Perth’s apparently a haven for Hipsters Dubbed by the New York Times as a haven for hipsters Perth’s cosmopolitan lifestyle and beautiful beaches are now growing in popularity. Read on for suggestions on where to have your first few hipster experiences at the following hang outs. Mechanics Institute Established in 2012 the Mechanics Institute
bar is a nod to the Institutes of the 1800s where vocational courses were provided for adults. Snuggled amid the rooftops of heritage buildings the Mechanics Institute lies in Northbridge. In terms of the historical value of this pub, it’s a gem of a heritage building which has been restored. Its split level designed deck is absolutely perfect to spend a quiet evening with friends over a pint of some finely crafted beer, artisan wine or cocktails. Burgers are big here and taste absolutely delicious. Flipside burger orders are perhaps the most sought after item on the menu and can be ordered from the bar itself. 6000 (entry rear laneway), 222 William St, Northbridge WA 6000, Australia
Ezra Pound While there are plenty of pubs in Perth, styled after the American Prohibition era,
Ezra Pound is an experience all together. In fact, if prohibition was still enforced, guests would be in the safest place as this pub in Perth is not known to many and is quite hard to find. Hidden in a narrow laneway, the niche bar is accessible only through a car park. Named after a London based British poet, the pub is big on cocktails. The bar staff would be more than happy to pour out any request that’s not on the menu. Hungry guests can find satisfying nibbles to go down with drinks. Beer bottles are served in paper bags to add that touch to coincide with its quirky ambience. Here amid the graffiti smeared walls of Ezra Pound’ laneway guest will taste some unusual brands such as Kooinda Valhalla Ale. The crowd is a mixed bag, but the experience is definitely other worldly.
The Bird
189 William St, Northbridge WA 6003, Australia
181 William St, Northbridge WA 6003, Australia
The Bird pub comes with a bit of history. Its walls of exposed brick have hosted bands and DJs, earning it a name as a popular live music hang out. Guests should not be put off with its size, and once one begins spending time here, they begin to understand why it’s perhaps the coolest bar in Perth. During the 1920s the buildings now courtyard was home to a brothel which then later was converted into a butchery. The charring from the smoked beef and other meats is still visible on the walls. In 2010 the place took on its current theme of the hippest live music venue in Perth. It’s a convivial atmosphere that pervades the ambiance at The Bird especially in its open air spaces. This is definitely a place not to be missed and definitely packs in some attitude.

MUSIC NEWS: INTERVIEWS
Polychrome East-London-based Polychrome, who channel the spirit of Cocteau Twins with the electronic ecstasy of M83, are made up of Oliver of The Bronze Medallists and Victoria of Victoria and Jacob. Victoria and Jacob have been championed by the likes of NME, Time Out, The Line of Best Fit, Uncut and DIY to name a few, and have also supported The Mystery Jets, Com Truise, Daughter, and Katy B. Oliver, frontman of indie electronica band Bronze Medallists (also solo performer/activist Olly the Octopus AKA ‘Boris Johnson’s Nemesis’ – City AM), has worked with the likes of Lucy Rose, Mt Wolf, L.A. Salami, and been supported by Radio 1, Radio X, Radio 2, and 6music to name a few. Hey Polychrome – welcome to BBM. What’s the most exciting thing that’s happened to you so far this year? Releasing our debut album and playing it live for the first ever time! It was the culmination of a lot of hard work and it’s exciting to see it go forth and hopefully multiply.... For those who haven’t heard your music yet, how would you best describe your sound? Answering this question always reminds me of the characters in the Mighty Boosh wandering around the desert looking for ‘The New Sound’, an enigmatic undefinable ghost you can’t hold on to. I suppose we searched around our own desert (in
the Scottish highlands) and we bleached out some analogue synths and added way more reverb than you should ever do and added some old drum machines. Sort of colliding dream-pop and synth-wave if compound-worded-genres are your thing... How did the project Polychrome materialise? I produced Victoria and Jacob’s debut album (Vicky’s previous band), and stole her from Jacob to start our own project together. Only joking! Jacob and her still work together too and he has his own solo stuff under the name Yukka, which is great. He played at our album launch actually. You wrote a lot of the album in Scotland, how does everyday life there differ to somewhere like London? Waaaaaaaaaaay more chilled, metaphorically and literally, and a lot less breathable particulate matter. It rains a bit more too but it’s somehow nice rain that you don’t mind schlepping through. It’s actually so beautiful there and so attractive to tourists it’d be even more crowded than London were it not for the midges keeping the human population under control. Do you think the Highlands influenced your sound at all? I think geography has a huge influence on creativity. Have you ever watched Skandi Noire? When was the last time you had a proper holiday and where did you go? Ooh, its been a while. I’m quite into surfing (yes in Scotland, yes I’m mad), so I try to go somewhere vaguely warm to do a bit of that when I have the chance. Like Portugal, or the Canaries. Who would be your dream collab? Our latest single ‘Dreaming About You’ was sort of about
Ryan Gosling. If you’ve seen La La Land you’ll know he can really sing. That would certainly make Vicky’s day if we could record the follow up with him. ‘Dreaming About You 2’ - It works on so many levels... Name a record you couldn’t live without? Pale Waves Interview – Heather Barron-Gracie Bristling with dark energy, pure pop sensibilities and new wave synergy, Manchester’s Pale Waves make their debut appearance in Sydney and Melbourne this July.
Fresh from confirming themselves as the band to watch at this years’ SXSW Festival, the indie-goth four piece have announced a run of shows off the back of hugely popular singles There’s A Honey, Television Romance, and the recently released ALL THE THINGS I NEVER SAID EP, containing Radio 1 playlist singles Heavenly and New Year’s Eve. Hello Heather, thank you for taking the time to talk with us today. How has your week been going? Hi! My week is going well thank you! We’ve been in the studio for around three weeks making our debut album so that’s been my week so far….. You guys had a massive 2017, and you seem to carrying that momentum through with you this year. Were you surprised by all the hype surrounding you now, or do you feel its outcome four years hard work on your part? The momentum around our band is everything we could ever ask for. I started writing music as a young child and all I ever wanted was for people to listen and care. So now that we’re finally receiving recognition it’s really satisfying. We work so hard as a band and I hope people know that when they see the hype we’re creating! How have you managed your sudden life change? Can you still walk around your local supermarket in Manchester and not get stopped by one adoring fan, or another? My life has definitely changed over the past year quite significantly. I went out in Manchester for the first time in a good while and got stopped a few times by Pale Waves’
fans. It’s really lovely, I adore meeting people that love our band it’s the best feeling, you almost feel an instant connection with them because you both share love for something in common. You released your debut EP ‘ALL THE THINGS I NEVER SAID’ in February. That must of been an amazing feeling to finally get it out there. Can you tell us a bit about what influenced your song choices on this EP? Some songs just instantly stood out as the ones to be on the EP. However Heavenly and The Tide were songs that we have had from the start of Pale Waves, so it made sense to release them in the period before our debut record. You have mentioned in other interviews that there is a full-length album on the way, what can we expect? Will it differ much from the EP? Yeah it will definitely differ from the EP. Albums are great because it gives you a whole new world to show how creative you can be. The album will basically be an insight into my mind and my world. The songwriting is more honest and in-depth than I’ve ever gone before. Did you have to change the songwriting process when thinking about a full-length album? Where do you even begin? Lyrics, guitars, base line or can it differ with every song? Our songs can start by various ways usually a song will begin from me and my acoustic, or Ciara will write a song musically and present it to me then we join forces I making great pop music. We’re a dream team when it comes to writing; there’s no other person I would trust with my music other than Ciara. You and Ciara met at University, in Manchester, what were both of you studying? Did you have any plans for a career outside of music, or was this always in your mindset? We were both studying music. Ciara and myself always knew from a young age that we loved music and we would grow up doing nothing else. You are coming to Australia this July, playing two shows in Sydney and Melbourne, are you excited to playing to fans on the other side of the world? Yeah, so excited! It’s everyone’s first time going to Australia
so as you can imagine we can’t wait to get over there. Did you ever imagine you’d be flying for a whole day to play your music to fans? I hope you are all comfortable flyers! It seems pretty surreal that we can travel so far from home to play our music to people that want to hear it. We’re not great flyers, but we’re happy to do it come and play for our fans over there! What has been your career highlight so far? Playing our biggest show in London a few days ago. There’s nothing like watching your own band grow and move into bigger venues. How would you describe Pale Waves sound in three words? Honest pop music What has been your favourite venue you’ve played so far? Heaven in London Thank you so much for taking the time to chat. Best of luck in Australia, and with the new album! Interview by Paraic Walker

Oliver Schories “Quality will find it’s way” - five words that are on all Oliver Schories’ platforms in place of bio’s, descriptions and comments. Five simple words that give you an idea of Oliver’s mantra, and that’s to let the music do the talking. Oliver’s discography features five studio albums and over thirty releases, adding to the list is his most recent EP ‘Ohm’, which was released merely days ago. The four-track EP features two originals and two remixes courtesy of Ramon Tapia and Gorge. On top of that, last year Oliver was picked to mix the next instalment of Global Underground’s revered Nubreed series. With such a broad discography, Schories has taken the next natural step for any artist with a broad library and intuitive mind, and that’s to bring a live aspect to his performance.
Schories is one of the few producers able to translate emotional intensity into pads and patterns. Stunning from beginning till end.” Among the latest wave of promising producers with a penchant for deep and emotive techno is Hamburg-based Oliver Schories. What started as 2012s one-to-watch artists and a new favorite for clubbers who like their techno grooves organic and melodic, with thick fuzzy synthesizers, reverb fx, powerful drum patterns and lots and lots of emotion emerged to one of the most booked DJs and Live-Acts of Germany.
Last year Oliver’s live show took Melbourne and Sydney by storm and this year won’t be any different.
After a string of releases for labels such as Kollektiv Turmstrasse’s Musik Gewinnt Freude, Parquet Recordings and his own started own imprint “der turnbeutel” (releases & Remixes from Joris Delacroix, Dan Caster, AKA AKA, Lexer, Rodriguez Jr, Daso, Einmusik, Wankelmut, Rampue, Fairmont, etc.), his second Album „Exit“ was released in March 2013. Followed by a series of high class remixes on Labels such as Stil vor Talent Katermukke and Get Physical, an EP on Noir Music was the closing highlight of 2013.

The Crew Behind LTEC announce their next project B3 Late last year Novel announced they will launch B3, a brand new event space which has never been used before. This breathtaking and unforgettable venue has convenient access to the Melbourne CBD and a late night license. ‘One aspect sorely lacking in Melbourne’s nightlife is an inner-city location suitable for large-scale, indoor events,’ said Novel director Daniel Teuma. ‘We are extremely confident that we have found the right venue to fill that gap.’ In only a matter of weeks Novel will announce the location of this CBD venue. What can be announced is the date of the first event alongside the name of the the first of three international acts to play at it. Novel brand smalltown will be in control for the first event which is scheduled in for Thursday the 27th of September, Grand Final eve (a public holiday). Germany’s DJ Koze is the first international to be announced. Currently riding high from the music media’s critical acclaim for his most recent long player, Knock Knock, it’s a welcome return for the auteur who has not been Down Under in over 4 years! Stay tuned for more announcements as they occur over the next 3 weeks!
DJ Koze (GER) Not many can stand taller in Germany’s
electronic dance music scene than DJ Koze. He can rightly be described as one of Germany’s longest running servants of dance music, a foundation member if you like. The readers of Germany’s trend-setting SPEX Magazine correctly voted DJ Koze the DJ Of The Years for 1999 - 2004, and now the listeners of global dance music correctly calls DJ Koze one of the worlds’ best. His remix of Lapsley’s ‘Operator Please’ went nuclear last year, and with the recent release of his recent album Knock Knock, Koze is set to go number one on pretty much every planet just outside of earth. This will be his first Australian return in over 4 years. Soundcloud

Sonus Festival
www.bbmlive.com 21
Following last month’s interview feature with Sonus Festivals After Movie Director, we got inspired to hear more about Croatia where the festival is held. This brought us to reaching out to Felver, one of the Sonus resident DJ’s who’s been Zagreb based for 26 years. Croatia has fast become Europe’s number one festival clubbing destination and every year the country which has a population of just 4.1 million his visited by over 16 million tourists, many who visiting for their unique festivals that are set in absolutely stunning locations such as Pag Island, where you’ll find Sonus.
part, it’s a wonder. So, it is very difficult, clumsy on my part for that matter, to name a few interesting places. But, let’s do it… the wines of Ilok, plains of Slavonia, hills of Zagorje, my Zagreb, Istria’s magic, Kornati with its sail, the wonderful Split, the landlocked lakes, the mountains if you feel like it..., just take a pick.
From boat parties to club takeovers, beach raves to all day kicks ons, there’s a party for everyone and Sonus has been representing and leading the way for the global tech house scene for 6 years. Enough from us, here’s what local legend Flava has to say…
There are other locations in the Balkans that also throw great parties and festival such as Serbia but it’s quite clear Croatia is the place that has risen on the map. Why do you think this is? The Croatian coast makes one of the biggest stages to organise clubbing and festival-type events. A thousand islands to choose from, and it’s been quite a spur for the hoist of interest. The Belgrade scene, the traditional zing to Sarajevo dynamics, Slovenia’s Ljubljana, all the great places. Croatia follows an upward trend because of a persistently had work by all of us. And it pays off.
What’s your name and what do you do? My name is Felver. Marijan Felver. Nice of you to have called in, much appreciated. I’ve been a Zagreb-based DJ for the past 26 years, trying to spearhead music throughout Croatia to the best of my ability. True, being a DJ is my primary calling, but I’ve tried to have my career evolved by working as a radio musical editor and a program manager for many clubs. Another thing I take very seriously is promotion, as it puts me in touch with people in whose work I’m interested. I think of it as an audience-toaudience connection, by putting their-tomine audience together. Where are you originally from? Natural breed of Zagreb! Croatian tourism has exploded in the past few years. Do you feel this has been a good thing for the local music scene? Over the past twenty years, the Croatian electronic scene has changed at so many levels. New blossoms and critical points, the whole nine yards. I would think that the most important change has to do with the size of the scene. Nowadays, it’s a way bigger, more dynamic and much more developed. This may be thanked to the hard work of local DJs and a multitude of summer festivals across the Croatian coast in the last ten years or so. Croatia has a huge festival scene from Soundwave in Tisno, Ultra in Split, Sonus in Zrce to Outlook in Pula. Which is your favourite? Well I either performed at or visited each of these places. A performer or a visitor, I always had a wonderful time. Sonus linked in with me from its very beginning, and while Istria is one of my all-time favourites, I must say that my heart goes with Zrće and Pag on this one. After a big night out do you go for some Čevape or a Burek? Always secretly on my menu, but I save it for not so big occasions. I keep it for the more ordinary times. You know, when you’re not so much impressed with other things that would otherwise distract you from Ćevapi and Burek. What would you say is a must-see destination in Croatia? Croatia is a very diverse country, a true beauty. Not a big country, but with scores of things to see, even if you just talk about Zagreb and its vicinity. The coast and the island, more than a thousand of them for that matter, would the be point to start your journey. The indented coast would just take much more to sail around, but it’s not such a bad thing, right? The continental
How do you compare it to Ibiza? Never been to Ibiza, only heard it was fun. Will make my way to it as soon as I get a chance. It must be quite the same sentiment as over here, but there should be difference, otherwise I would not want to go. There are a few underground destinations the Beats Travellers love to party at, such as Kocka in Split. What is your favourite underground rave spot? The Stereotip Sundays’, the Masters and the Funk in Zagreb.
What is the best party you have played at over the years? And is there a favourite club of yours that people should not miss on their time in Croatia? There are so many people and clubs, so much groove brought about by each and every one of them. Almost impossible to single out one of them, it depends on the day of the week. And every day brings its own surprise. The best thing for me is to be on the lookout and get surprised. If not, well tomorrow’s another day. If you have one day off at a festival. What would you be doing? Heading to the beaches, trekking up mountains or something else? What’s would you recommend we get up to? Quite honestly, I don’t really care what and where, people of my choice would be my pick. If I had the people I loved around me, I can sit at a treetop or in a five-star hotel. It’s all about who makes your juices running. It’s about the atmosphere and the energy. So, I can climb the mountains or be at beaches, or at home, as long as I’m happy with what turned to be the best party I threw yesterday. If you had 24 hours to travel to around Croatia what’s your top 3? i.e. must eat, must see, must do, must meet... All four criteria met with these one: At Draško’s in Zagreb, but you need me for this one as you can’t get in without a referee. Come and say at Sonus Festival 2018.

The Kimberley Travel Guide The Kimberley is Western Australia’s remote and sparsely populated wild heart, and one of the best places in the country to experience Australia without the crowds. Covering an area of over 164,000 square miles – that’s nearly 425,000 square km – the Kimberly is twice the size of Victoria with just 40,000 people living in the area, half of which are Aboriginal. The area is chock full of ancient landscapes, pristine white sand beaches, along with some bizarre sights (a horizontal waterfall anyone?). There is so much to see and experience here you might plan for a week, but end up taking a month. Most visitors enter the Kimberley through the coastal town of Broome, flying direct from Perth year round, with flights from Melbourne and Sydney during high season. Broome is itself a great place to hang out for a few days. Directly facing the Indian Ocean, the town is famous for its pristine beaches, the most famous of which is Cable Beach boasting a whopping 22km of squeaky white sand. Take a camel ride here at sunset and take in the views. Heading deep into the Kimberley it soon becomes obvious the area’s natural wonders are its biggest draw. The World Heritage Purnululu National Park is home to the fantastically named Bungle Bungles, 360 million year old rock domes which rise up from the flat
land in spectacular fashion. Tiger striped and eerie, a walk among the enormous rocks is one of the top experiences in the Kimberley. Visit them yourself from Halls Creek (100km away) or join a guided tour. Another strange yet awe inspiring sight is Horizontal Falls, a waterfall that doesn’t actually fall. A freakish natural phenomenon where tonnes of sea water are squeezed through a tight gap between twin mountain ranges, the huge tides crashing into the coast reach up to 13 metres, and give the “falls” their ferocity and whitewater. Hop on a jet boat through the middle for a thrilling experience. For something a bit more chilled, take a trip to the remote

Buccaneer Archipelago, a stunning area of 1,000 islands, each with their own white sandy beaches and secluded bays. The islands are sparsely populated and rugged, with rainforest and mangroves. Home to snakes and lizards, geckos and birds, sharks and tropical fish, it’s a nature lovers paradise.
including Adcock Gorge, Lennard Gorge and Galvin’s Gorge. If all that walking gets too much, cool off in one of the deep swimming waterholes which pop up around the gorges. The water is always cool and the scenery is always breath taking. The Kimberley is a wilderness just waiting to be discovered. Adventure Tours Australia tell us 5 Things You Didn’t Know About Alice Springs Alice Springs or simply “Alice” as it’s better known sits slap bang in the geographical heart of Australia. This remote outpost feels anything but remote, with bars and cafes, restaurants and hostels and all the amenities you can think of. You’d be forgiven for forgetting you’re about as far away from civilisation as it’s possible to get when travelling through the Red Centre. Most visitors just pass through Alice stopping briefly for supplies before travelling on, but that doesn’t mean Alice isn’t worth sticking around for. Here are a few surprising facts about this remote outpost. It’s got artistic cred Alice Springs has been heralded as the artistic capital of the Northern Territory with more art galleries per population than anywhere else in the country. If you’re after some quality Aboriginal art that directly benefits local Aboriginal people, then this is the place to go.
Festivals, festivals, festivals For somewhere so cut off from the rest of the country, and with such a small population, Alice
doesn’t hang about when it comes to festivals. Numerous events are held throughout the year, including the ridiculously popular Camel Cup and the artsy bash Desert Festival, plus the Parrtjima Festival in Light to name just a few. You’ll never get bored.
It’s out there Alice is about as remote as you can get, while still being able to get a hot shower and a decent internet connection. It’s just equidistant between Darwin and Adelaide at around 1500km from each, and it’s a whopping
3605km from Perth. Yes, Australia is massive.
A long history The Arrernte people have lived in the area that is now Alice Springs for the past 50,000 years and according to traditional stories believe the land was shaped by caterpillars, wild dogs and other ancestral figures. There are many traditionally important sites surrounding the town where you can learn more about its history.
It’s gaining hipster credentials Slowly but surely. It’s not quite up there with Fitzroy in Melbourne but Alice has a burgeoning hipster scene with brunch favourite Page 27 serving up eggs done right, and by evening hip Hanuman dishing out tasty Indian Thai fusion cuisine. Your taste buds will thank you.
Discover Central Australia with Adventure Tours Australia You can explore Alice Springs and central Australia with Adventure Tours Australia. With a range of popular tours and travel styles, it’s fair to say there’s a tour for nearly everyone. away in seconds. The pools are fed by pure spring water from the nearby Daly and Georgina basins, and bubble at a balmy 34 degrees throughout the year. The surrounding forest of paperbark and palms provide a shady and lush backdrop, helping to block out the harsh sun rays. The thermal waters are a mini paradise in the desert and yet another hidden gem of the Northern Territory. You won’t need your hiking boots for this one.
The crystal clear warm waters of this natural pool are famous for their healing powers, able to soothe all aches and pains

THE BEST ATTRACTIONS ON KANGAROO ISLAND
As far as Australia bucket lists go, Kangaroo Island has been printed way up at the top, time and time again. For those who know or have already been, this is for obvious reasons. But there are those who may have overlooked this unique and incredible destination off the South Australian coast. If you happen to be one of them, you’re about to save a spot for Kangaroo Island on your own list. Here are the Best Attractions on Kangaroo Island
Little Sahara Sandboarding Little Sahara is exactly what it says on the tin and with various sizes of sand dunes, the highest being around 70 metres, Little Sahara is the ultimate playground for adrenaline junkies around the globe. South Australia tourist attractions don’t come more exciting than this and if you can muster the courage to slide yourself down from the top of a dune, you’ll soon discover why thousands upon thousands come here every year.
Seal Bay One of Kangaroo Island’s most famous and most visited attractions is Seal Bay. It is home to a massive population of Australian Sea Lions that charm onlookers as they bounce between relaxation and play. Visiting this part of Kangaroo Island offers one of the most exciting experiences of Sea Lions in their natural environment. Thankfully, there are also plenty of boat excursions where you will be brought right into the centre of the colony, which in all accounts is an experience that is very hard to put into words after you return!
Vivonne Bay Kangaroo Island, Vivonne Bay, is most popular for its glorious white sandy beach, the Harriet River and Bay Jetty. Here at Vivonne Bay you can dive into underwater ecosystems whilst snorkelling and see the most staggering Kangaroo Island marine life. This is also the additional chance to go fishing from the jetty or the beach, and even go surfboarding. If Vivonne Bay wasn’t epic enough, you can also head to the river for a stint of stand up paddle boarding and river kayaking. With its wealth of wildlife and beautiful scenery, this area of Kangaroo Island is a must visit.
Pennington Bay Another one of Kangaroo Island’s famously visited spots is of course, Pennington Bay. Located on the Southern Coast of Kangaroo Island, Pennington Bay is a great place for catching the surf, making this beach very popular amongst both backpackers and Australian surfers. Pennington Bay is so aesthetically pleasing it’s hard not to stare out into the scenery and lose yourself for a moment or two. It is also a perfect photo opportunity to capture the authentic beauty of Kangaroo Island. If Pennington Bay wasn’t incredible enough, it is also a spot well known for seeing Whales and Dolphins!
Admirals Arch Admirals Arch is one of the Island’s most interesting and peculiar land formations. Forming over thousands of years through erosion, this process has crafted an incredible rock bridge on the Island’s southwest coast. Leading you to the Arch is a boardwalk with many beautiful sites, where there are viewpoints to spot the New Zealand Fur Seals and during the summer months you can even see the seal pups playing in the shallows.
The Flinders Chase National Park The Flinders Chase National Park is an aggressively rugged chunk of wilderness which is equally beautiful as it is striking. Featuring all of the famous landmarks like the world renowned - Admirals Arch and Remarkable Rocks, you’ll find yourself awe struck throughout the day. This park has a hugely diverse wildlife that can be seen on the network of walking trails and naturally, this is one of the best places to see kangaroos and little baby joeys on Kangaroo Island. Understandably, there are very little of those who come here for just the day; in no way should any of these incredible attractions on Kangaroo Island be missed. Now make room on the top of your bucket list and for information, visit www.kiadventuretours.com.au.

Ewen and Breana Lawrie are the proud team behind the opening of this fresh, youthful and crisp take on the wine tourism industry. Both born and bred in Perth, they fell in love with Western Australia’s lush South West region. The wine, the food, the overall atmosphere was so desirable to them. Discovering that the Swan Valley was as equally captivating and right on Perth’s door step was such a thrill! Ewen and Breana both have extensive experience and knowledge of the hospitality and tourism industry and are both passionate about food and wine. Which led to this exciting tour company that was launched in Winter 2013.
Would a solo traveller be welcome on the tours?
my experience.
Oh most certainly! We have solo travellers come with us all the time for tours! It’s not only a great way to spend the day (wining and dining), but you get to learn something awesome about Perth, plus meet so many different people. Often guests on our tours will end up going out for a drink together in the city when the tour is finished – our tours are a really great environment for socializing with someone new.

Budget – Discovery Parks Swan Valley. Camping available
Their mission is to provide a first class informative and fun tours which showcase the quality of wine and food in the Swan Valley. The tours will focus on appreciation of wine, education about the tasting process, and even a little cellar door etiquette.
When booking a group onto one of our daily tours, the sooner the better. For weekends especially anyway! We tend to book up more quickly on the weekends. For week days a bigger group can get lucky if they leave it to short notice.

d’Vine Tours strives to provide a service that meets the needs of a broader market. No matter what you fancy they offer something for everyone. The tours visit the Swan Valley and Bickley Valley; both equally unique, whether you want to indulge in the wineries with delicious cheese boards, hit up the award winning micro-breweries, visit a cidery to taste Perth’s best cider or just skip all that to try gourmet chocolates, nougat, honey and much more.
We do specialize in customizing private tours for groups so if this is what the guests are after then we recommend some notice. Firstly so they get their desired date, and secondly so we have sufficient time to organise their ideal day.
We caught up with Breana, Director of the d’Vine Tours who gave us an insider’s guide to Swan Valley tours and the amazing Western Australia wine region. Here’s what she had to say…
Please tell us a little about d’Vine Tours? My partner and I started d’Vine Tours in August 2013 out of our love for wine and showing people a good time! We focus on providing quality and professional ‘pay by the seat’ tours which run on a daily basis, as well as corporate and private packages for a unique group experience. The tours visit the Swan Valley and Bickley Valley; both equally unique and offering something for everyone! From award winning boutique wineries, craft breweries and cider houses, gourmet chocolatiers and patisseries and so much more.
Who is the typical type of person who can be found on a tour? I can honestly say that we see people from all different walks of life! From wine lovers to people just wanting to experience the greater Perth. Our tours cater for just about anyone – Although we get through a bit of wine tasting – those that don’t enjoy wine as much still have a great time. The demographic is very broad also as our tours appeal to any age group.
For someone with no experience with choosing wines do you have any tips on the best wines to take away from the tours? Is there a particular wine that the Swan Valley is famous for? I always tell my guests to buy what they love and not wait until the next winery. Because what they love may be at the first venue! I’ll give some wine tasting tips to the guests as well. If they are tasting the wines properly then they will be more likely to know whether a particular wine is right for them or not. The Swan Valley is renowned for Verdelho (a lovely Portuguese white variety) and also the fortified wines are out of this world!! I could keep going however these two would have to be the signatures for the Swan Valley.
Food and wine tours have been growing in popularity over recent years, do you have any advice to help people choose the right tour?
from $30 per night however cabins start around $100 per night.
*There’s not much of a difference in price however The Colony is brand new with amazing views of their vineyards and the Swan River!!
What’s the highlight destination /sight (non related to wine) people should look forward to in the region? Well this would depend on the individual – The region has a very rich history for WA, with Guildford being amongst the oldest towns in West Oz. Heritage Walks through the quaint town of Guildford are available and are a must! Those with an interest in our native flora and fauna should visit Caversham Wildlife Park and Whiteman Park. There is plenty of non-wine related attractions of the Swan Valley – If you’re joining us on a tour it may just be the famous Margaret River Chocolate Co.. YUM!
Do you know why the Swan Valley is called the Swan Valley? The lovely Swan River runs right through the middle of the Swan Valley wine region.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
I definitely recommend calling the tour company and asking questions! We offer a variety of tours and we are the experts so we really appreciate it when people give us the opportunity to break down the tours to them. This way we can cover all aspects of the tour they may not get from the booking sight.
I’ve spoken a lot about the Swan Valley however for those that may have been already or are most interested in smaller boutique regions then I highly recommend the Bickley Valley Wine Region! We run tours to this region on the weekends. It’s just beautiful!
If someone or a group want to stay for a few days, can you recommend a budget, mid range and luxury accommodation options in the area?
Also we do encourage people to contact for any queries what so ever – info@dvinetours.com.au or call (08) 9244 5323. And you can find us on Insta and Facebook. Please follow us for some fun, interesting posts! @dvinetours
I have stayed at a variety of places in the Swan Valley and it’s always a pleasure. These recommendations are based on

10 Ways to Save Money on an Australian Road Trip Travelling around Australia is a must on any backpackers’ bucket list but it doesn’t come without its drawbacks. Money is going to be one of the main things which put people off travelling – but it shouldn’t be! Here’s 10 ways to save money on your Australian road trip – letting you enjoy yourself without breaking the bank!
1. Car maintenance Before you set off it’s a good idea to make sure that your car is properly maintained. Many people have fallen into the trap of driving something that has broken down on them and then having to fork out to repair it – cutting into their travel costs. Make sure your tyres are good enough to last you and take your car for a full service. Also take oil and water with you in the trunk
so you can top up if you need to.
2. Rent/buy/share There are lots of different ways to travel around Australia and each of these means have their own pros and cons. Ridesharing is the cheapest option for short term – because you’re splitting the cost of fuel. But you’ll have a hard job finding someone who is going the same distance as you so this option may not work if you’re planning a long road trip. If you are going long distance then buying a car may be more ideal for you, because you have the freedom to take the trip in your own time. Renting is good for those who are flying the long distances and driving around more locally.
3. Map your route By making sure that you have your route mapped out beforehand will save you wasting fuel by getting lost. However, make sure that you allow some leeway for spontaneous trips – these are the most fun part of any trip!
4. Camp for free There are hundreds of free campsites all across Australia and you’re bound to come across one every few miles. Make sure that you’re using these instead of paid camping sites and you’ll save hundreds.
5. Free BBQs As well as campsites, there are hundreds of free public BBQs all over this country. They’re located in campsites, parks and general outdoor public areas so make good use of them instead of eating out all the time!
6. Look on coupon sites For the most part, these aren’t a good idea because people end up buying things they don’t need. However, if you know there’s certain activities or places you want to visit on your road trip then it’s well worth checking these sites out to see what kind of discount you can get.
7. Couchsurf In Australia, the people are so wonderful and friendly that it makes sense to stay with locals. Not only are these free places to stay,
but you get to know people and find out more about Australia from actual Australians! Think of it like a cultural exchange.
8. Check your receipts No we don’t mean check them to make sure that you were charged the right amount. Many receipts from the bigger stores will offer you deals and discounts on the back. It is well worth just having a look to see if you can get any money off your next shop.
9. Limit your excess spending It can be really tempting when travelling to pick up a souvenir or two for people back home, or buy your new friends another round of drinks. But this is where the costs will sneak up on you. Have a budget and stick to it, no matter how tempting it is. Instead of going to a bar – buy some beer from a supermarket and have it outside. This will save you loads.
10. Go outside! The best part about an Australian road trip? All the wonderful outdoors you’ll get to see! And this is made even better by the fact that it’s all free. Spend time in nature, spend less money and get to see some amazing places!
10 Ways to Save Money whilst Backpacking Australia For budget backpackers, Australia is easily one of the worst places to – money wise. However it is also one of the best places because of the fantastic culture, scenery and people. Don’t let the fact that it’s slightly more expensive put you off. There are some tips which can help you save money for backpacking Australia, so get out there and start planning your trip!
1. Water Buying a water bottle sounds like a really strange and unhelpful tip but trust us when we say that it’ll do you the world of good. Australia (particularly in the summer) gets really hot and you’ll want to stay really hydrated or you’ll end up ill. Buying a water bottle means that you can fill up wherever there’s clean drinking water and save
yourself buying bottles of water every time you go in a shop.
while experiencing the magic of Australian camping.
2. Travel the path less travelled
5. Alternative accommodation
Wherever you’re planning to go on your backpacking adventure, one sure fire way to save money is to go to the less tourist-y spots. Restaurants, hotels and campsites off the beaten track are often just as good but without the hefty price tag.
It can be tempting when backpacking to check into a nice hotel to make sure that you can have a hot bath or shower and a warm, cosy bed. But this is going to work out very expensive. For cheaper options try camping, or bed and breakfasts. You can choose to rent for however long you want meaning it’s perfect for backpackers with a flexible schedule.
8. Wi-Fi
6. Cook
A great way to save money is to work for your accommodation. In Australia there are plenty of places where you can help out on farms in exchange for a place to stay (and sometimes breakfast!) Make the most of these places and you’ll get to meet new people too!
3. Use discounts There are so many different discount sites out there that you’re sure to find one that will offer you great deals. If you know there’s a particular place you want to visit, or activity you want to do then have a look to see if you can get money off. This also goes for restaurants or bars that you know you’ll visit during your trip.
4. Goon Okay, bear with us here – we haven’t lost the plot. Goon is the local name for a bag of wine which undoubtedly the cheapest way to have a drink (or two) in Oz. It’s the perfect alternative to going out to drink and suits the backpacker lifestyle perfectly because you can enjoy a glass or two
Eating out seems like a great option and an essential part of your trip is not cooking. But this is such an easy way to ensure that you rack up the costs of living. Cooking your own food is so much cheaper because you can cook multiple meals in one go, meaning you don’t have to buy as much. It can also be fun – make use of the free to use BBQs located all over the place.
7. Go to the locals Who is going to know the best deals and cheapest places to go better than the people who live there? Asking local people
if they know of any ways to save money is a great way to make sure that you’re getting the best information possible.
Find free Wi-Fi so you can still message friends and family back home without using up all of your data. McDonalds, Burger King and similar places have free public Wi-Fi, as well as public libraries. Seek them out to save you money.
9. Work for bed
10. Hostels Hostels are the backpackers dream. You get somewhere to stay for little money, get to meet likeminded people and quite often the local restaurants will offer discounts for those staying in the local hostel. What better way to backpack Australia?

Everything You Need To Know About Superannuation Lodged within the Australian Superannuation system is a savings account that you would not have had otherwise. From your very first pay check, the Australian Government have been collecting Super payments and slowly, but surely, you have unknowingly been saving your pennies on the side. The professionals from Backpay.com has told us everything we need to know, which is likely why so many travellers turn to their services to get back all the dollar bills they have been saving. Everything you need to know Ok. Declaring itself as super is a tad outlandish as superannuation is basically a pension arrangement. Yup. That’s not even barely stirring is it, let alone super. However, in Australia this is governmentsupported which also means that minimum provisions are enforced for employees, which is kinda nice. From July 1st 2013 employers were required by law to contribute a minimum of 9.25% of an employee’s ordinary time earning into a superannuation fund, which is called a ‘Superannuation Guarantee’. The detail that is really super is that this is an additional payment borne by your employer; it is not deducted from your gross pay. There are also plans to increase the proportion to 12% by 2019, which is nice.
The payment is based on your pre-tax earnings so if you earned $500 before tax for the month you should be entitled to an additional $46.25. However, do not be alarmed if your superannuation balance looks a little skinny as 15% is taxed by the Australian Tax Office (ATO) and funds constantly charge administration and insurance fees which can amount to $5-10 per week. To be eligible the employee must be over 18, working over 30 hours a week and earning over $450 per month from one employer, so it would be beneficial to hold a single job instead of several. As far as assurances go the Australian Government have that covered too as from 1st January 2014 employers were obligated to pay default contributions to an authorised MySuper product, with the most well known
being AustralianSuper and AustSafe Super. This means that losing your payment due to a suspect provider is now far less a risk. That all sounds grand and all for Australian citizens yet for short-term visitors such as those on Working Holiday Visas the reality is a little different. Of course, if you meet the criteria then you can expect the contribution. Remember, as long as you earn over $450 a month from one employer you will be entitled. The arrangement is for any worker; whether permanent or casual, resident or non-resident for tax purposes (that would be you by the way). Arranging your superannuation is relatively straightforward. You can set up your own super account, which is the simpler choice if you intend of taking on temporary work or travelling while in Australia. You could also ask the bank to set up your super when you open an account with them or you can join the super account set up by the employer. If you do opt for the company’s super account and lose the paperwork do not fret, simply contact the ATO and they can help locate your super. For anyone being paid in cash it may seem great to have your wages in your hands to hold and then spend but you will be missing out on superannuation. You read that correctly. For all those lovely, crisp banknotes in your pocket you will be losing out on FREE MONEY. Working holiday makers are allowed to withdraw their superannuation either when their visa expires or whenever they leave permanently. This is known as the Departing Australia Superannuation Payment or DASP. A point to note is that you must have left Australia before this can be paid; the application includes checking that any
temporary visa has been cancelled by the Department of Immigration. Indeed, The Australian government must get really irked with these departures as they then take out a further 35% when you apply for the withdrawal. Bit harsh. Another point to note is that you are much better off claiming it sooner rather than later. In fact, if you do not claim your super within six months of leaving Australia, or within six months of the cancellation or expiry of your visa, the ATO will claim the money and it could be a while to organise its release from their tight grasp, especially from abroad. Still, the money is yours but if you are having trouble working out how to claim it then do not worry. If you have already claimed your taxback then the same company, and even the very same tax professional, should be able to assist you in claiming your superannuation. All you need to do is provide your membership details, fill in some forms and the tax professionals will do the hard work while you wait for the payment to arrive. Most charge a flat fee of around 15% for the service and you should receive your super within 28 days of the Australian Tax Office receiving your application. Superannuation may not exactly be super but it is free money that you should be entitled to when working in Australia. Setting up your account is simple and claiming it back once your visa has expired is not that hard either. Just do not forget about it, it is free money after all.
