SYDNEY

A Local's Guide To Sydney... Sarah Hendriks, owner of Porch & Parlour in North Bondi, shares with us her favourite things about Sydney, including eateries, hangouts and day trips. Where’s your favourite place to hang in Sydney? Any of the ocean baths – we’re pretty darn lucky to have these on our doorstep! What’s your favourite restaurant in Sydney? I need to pick two! Acme in Rushcutters Bay; their share plates are so unique referencing both Chinese and Italian flavours and their White Negroni (gin, suze and dolin blanc) is wild. A local favourite is Da Orazio in Bondi. It’s fresh, simple Italian and with a Number 8 (vodka, grapefruit, Campari) the ideal Sunday situation. What’s your favourite bar in Sydney? It depends on the vibe! Low key then Surlys in Surry Hills. Glass of rose – Dead Ringer in Surry Hills. Late night – Hello Sailor in Darlinghurst.

10

www.bbmlive.com

Local – The Corner House or The Anchor in Bondi. Where would you go for a day trip from Sydney? Up to the Blue Mountains! Really beautiful walking trails + waterfalls! If you have time to stay overnight then the Old Leura Dairy is my pick. If you could travel to any place/country in the world where would it be and why? Italy. Purely for their culture surrounding good food, wine, family and traditions. Combining this with their colourful coastlines (Amalfi, Positano, Capri) and you’ve got magic.

DARWIN

Northern Territory Bucket List

Planning your 2016 travels now? No Aussie experience is complete without journeying to one of the most unique landscapes on earth and ticking these top activities off your bucket list. Explore Kakadu National Park

At 20,000 square kilometres, it’s no surprise that Kakadu is home to some incredible beauty spots. From waterfalls to rivers and rock art to sunset views, this sprawling adventure playground is best explored between April and October when the heat is less intense and the waterfalls more accessible. A couple of hours’ drive from Darwin, the infamous saltwater crocodile can also be found here, particularly on a cruise of the Mary River wetlands.

Watch The Camel Cup

Like no sporting event you’ve ever seen before, the Camel Cup takes place in the outback town of Alice Springs, and yes – camels play an important role. In 2016, the Camel Cup will be held on 9th July, and will see camels and their riders race towards the finish line in an iconic and quirky spectacle. There are nine races scheduled throughout the day, so you’re bound to see some interesting entertainment!

18

www.bbmlive.com

Dive With Crocodiles

Darwin is the only place in Australia where you can go diving with crocodiles. The Cage of Death within Crocosaurus Cove involves a five-metre croc, a transparent cylinder cage and you. After being lowered into the croc’s pool enclosure, you spend 15 minutes right up close with the big beast, even being able to see it feed from a handler. Experience it solo or with a friend – just make sure you do it.

Browse Mindil Beach Sunset Markets

You may not consider a simple market up there with croc diving and camel racing, but Darwin’s Mindil Beach Sunset Markets isn’t just any market. Running during the dry season from April to October, you can soak up the tropical atmosphere with fresh juices, international cuisine and local crafts, before taking in the view of the beautiful sunset from the beach.

Spend The Night At Uluru

One of the icons of Australia is the big red rock called Uluru. Also known as Ayers Rock, you can spend the night nearby Uluru in Kata Tjuta National Park, to see the dramatic colours and shades of the rock during sunset and sunrise. A spectacular sight, there are many tours departing from Alice Springs that give you the chance to see Uluru in all its glory.

EXPAT INTERVIEW

WHAT’S IT LIKE NURSING IN OZ WITH HEALTHCARE AUSTRALIA (HCA)? This month, we speak to Grant Howley, a mental health nurse from Manchester, about his experience nursing and travelling in Australia. From making his initial contact with HCA back in the UK to settling down in Sydney, here he explains why every nurse should consider making the move Down Under.

What do you like about the Aussie lifestyle? I like how seriously Australians take their down time – I had no idea until I came here! Back at home, I was living from pay day to pay day so it was quite difficult to travel and do things with my friends. Now, I make sure I get the most out of my time off – there’s so much to see and do in Australia – everyone wants to get out and do stuff, which is great!

Why did you decide to make the move to Oz? I’ve been qualified and working in the same place for 4 years so I wanted a change. Also, I’m 29 so I thought it would be a good opportunity to use the Working Holiday Visa!

What nursing experience has stood out the most to you, since you’ve been here? Whilst working with HCA, I had a 2 month placement as a community psychiatric nurse in a small country town called Bourke in the North of New South Wales. It gave me the opportunity to work with quite a large aboriginal population and I learnt a lot about the culture, the community there and how the health care needs differ to the other places I’ve worked in. It was professionally challenging but really interesting and certainly gave me a very different experience of Australia!

How did you end up joining HCA as a nurse? I spoke with HCA back in the UK, when I was looking for information about nursing in Australia. They were really helpful and supported me throughout the whole process of moving to the other side of the world! I got in touch with the local office when I arrived in Sydney with no real plan, just my backpack, my credit card and my passport and they helped me find work! How have you found working with HCA? It’s been great! You have the flexibility to pick and choose your shifts so you can go off travelling for a few weeks if you want to see more of the country. Or, if you are saving up for something, there’s always the opportunity to work more shifts. Plus, HCA has offices in all of the states so you can work and fund your travelling as you go. How have HCA helped you build your life here? They have been so supportive, right from the beginning when I was toying with the idea of moving to Australia, to being able to find me work throughout my time here. By working in lots of different facilities I feel like I have had a great all-round experience of what it’s like to be a nurse in Australia.

20

www.bbmlive.com

Would you recommend doing a rural placement? Definitely! I would recommend it to any health care professional who is thinking of coming over or anyone who is already working here! It’s a great opportunity to get a very organic experience of Australia, not only as a traveller but also from a health care perspective. I’ve met so many cool people and there’s loads to do – I’ve had a great time! Do it!

See more from Grant in Healthcare Australia’s latest video ‘What’s it like nursing in Australia?’ at www.healthcareaustralia.com.au/ nursing-in-australia and find out how you could get a FREE FLIGHT* to Australia when you work for HCA! *Terms & conditions apply, see the HCA website for details.

SHIPPING

Packing The Essentials When Moving To Australia

If you’ve fallen head over heels for Australia and have decided to make your move permanent, you’ll find that moving your entire life half way around the world is no mean feat. Not only do you need to secure a permanent visa, find somewhere to live and get a job, you also need to think about what you’re going to take from your old home to your new one. Some things you can afford to (and probably should) leave behind – that jumper your mother-inlaw bought for you last Christmas, the plant that’s dying on your office desk, the IKEA bookcase that can so easily be replaced). When it comes to shipping to Australia, you’ll probably find that less is more. Of course, there will be some things that you don’t want to leave behind, whether for sentimental value or because you just can’t buy them Down Under. And it’s these items that you’ll want to pack with great care so they can come with you to your new home. Firstly, you need to keep Australian customs in the back of your mind as you pack. Prohibited items 30

www.bbmlive.com

include fresh fruits and vegetables, live plants, fireworks, soil, and live animals including pets that need an import permit. Many of these things you don’t need to bring into Australia anyway, as they have them here, but you also need to make sure that anything you do bring into Australia doesn’t contain any of these ingredients. Inspect and clean everything, because if something’s found to be contaminated upon arrival, it may not make it through. It’s important that you keep a list of everything you pack in each box – one for you and one for the Australian authorities. Labelling the outside of each box will also help to identify what’s in each box – including fragile, heavy and dangerous items. This may be done with a permanent marker or sticky labels. Finally, to make sure fragile items arrive in the same state as when you packed them, wrap them carefully with acceptable packing materials. For peace of mind, Seven Seas Worldwide can help you get your stuff to Australia safely and securely with its unique MoveCube® service.

WHAT SKILLS ARE BAR MANAGERS LOOKING FOR? We talk to Bar Manager of The Baxter Inn, Steve Crozier, to find out what you need to impress behind the bar. What key things does a bartender need to find work behind a bar? They need to be personable and friendly – these are the unteachables. The knowledge and knowhow can be taught – personality, unfortunately, can’t. Have a strong work ethic. Can you take someone on that is yet to get their RSA? No, not in NSW. Get this ASAP. What type of experience would you be looking for for The Baxter Inn? We stock over 700 whiskies so you need to have some previous whisky experience and it’s a very high octane bar so you need at least 3-4 years behind the stick making cocktails just to be able to keep up with the pace. Can a new employee expect to do a trial shift? We do not hire staff without seeing how they handle customers and seeing their methods. A trial shift is a must. This also gives the potential employee the chance to test the water before being hired and then hating it after one day.

32

www.bbmlive.com

If someone was on a working holiday visa, would this put you off hiring them? We always hire depending on the individual. People that take the effort to visit us and know a little about what we do are always considered. Someone mail-blasting a CV with a generic cover letter to 30 venues, and forgetting to bcc the other bars so we can all see, will probably not be considered. We will always consider people with any visa. How can bartenders continue to improve their skills? Go to other bars and get a broader understanding of the industry. There’s a whole world of good boozers out there that all do things differently. Watch and learn. Also – read. Books are incredible. How would you describe the Sydney bar industry today? The calibre of Sydney’s drinking holes is as high as it has ever been! People are moving here from all corners of the earth to work in this industry.

ACCOMMODATION

BALI & BEYOND

Travel to Bali and its lesser known island sisters on the Bali Island Hopper with Contiki. Indonesia’s most famous island, Bali is a twinkling diamond of volcanoes, rice paddies and beaches surrounded by azure waters that lay home to similarly striking atolls. By island hopping from one to another, you come to realise that while Bali has been the star for decades, it’s only the beginning.

Bali

Bali is a bit of a dream, but when you wake up, it’s just as you imagined – if not better. With unspoilt and remote areas as well as resort towns and tourist traps, it has something for everyone. Due to an abundance of nature and calming atmosphere, Bali’s become the place to escape on a yoga or meditation retreat, while the lively coast is a haven for surfers. There are also numerous religious sites that have silently sat for hundreds of years, including Uluwatu Temple, which resides 34

www.bbmlive.com

on a cliffside. Surrounded by coral reefs in warm tropical water (and the odd shipwreck), Bali also attracts an array of marine life, making it one of the top snorkelling and diving locations in the world.

Gili Trawangan

Arguably the most beautiful of all the Gili Islands, Gili Trawangan is a paradise. The largest of the three, you can expect powdery white sand and clear blue water as far as the eye can see. You can walk around the edge of the island in around two hours by foot (a no-motor-vehicles rule means that this is the most popular mode of transport), including passing through the popular beaches of Goodheart and North Beach. Along these beaches you can find many shacks renting out snorkel equipment so you can take to the waters and explore the coral reefs – of which there are over 25 surrounding the Gili Islands. There are plenty of other distractions including horse riding, kayaking, fishing, golf or simply bathing beneath the beating sun.

Lombok

This laidback and mountainous island is much like Bali some 20 or 30 years ago, and despite an increase in popularity, has undergone little development. Famous for its surf breaks and picturesque beaches, it’s the interior of Lombok that really entices. Hiking trails through lush forest, cascading waterfalls and tobacco and rice fields are overshadowed by the mighty Gunung Rinjani, the second highest volcano in Indonesia, which boasts hot springs and a crater lake at its summit. The closest Lombok has to a resort town is Senggigi, and even this is nothing like the happy hours and bikini competitions of Bali’s livelier towns, with seafood restaurants, karaoke bars and very new hotels. Due to their individual offerings and experiences, Bali, Gili Trawangan and Lombok are the three destinations chosen for the Contiki Bali Island Hopper. Contiki’s only tour of Bali, the Bali Island Hopper is eight days of exploration, relaxation and discovery from just $900pp. The easy pace goes hand-in-hand with the ambience of the three islands; to keep stress levels at a minimum, you’ll stay in four-star hotels, enjoy private beaches, sip cocktails by the pool and dine on Indonesian cuisine. You’ll also receive all local transport and have the company and knowledge of a Contiki Trip Manager. And, as with other Contiki trips, you can add on Me Time activities such as a diving day course and surf lesson, to make your Bali Island Hopper the holiday you want. Bali Island Hopper is one of many Contiki Holidays Asia trips from 9-25 days. If you’ve only got a few weeks to travel or if you’re looking to experience Asia and make new friends along the way, definitely consider organised group travel as an option. It’s great to share your experiences with like-minded people, and even better if they’re with you for the ride. Give Contiki a call on 1300-266845, head to Contiki.com or visit your local travel agent. Give Contiki a call on 1300-266-845, head to Contiki.com or visit your local travel agent.

Discover India & Volunteer With ISpiice Looking for a way to travel India and explore the country’s rich culture, whilst making a very real difference to some of the world’s most deprived communities? With ISpiice (Integrated Social Programs in Indian Child Education), you can discover the rolling hills and stunning landscape of the Kangra Valley, whilst making an impact on its inhabitants. The scheme offers a variety of projects that focus heavily on the social problems that penetrate through this valley and its local communities. Choose to teach English, health education or computer skills to women or children, to help in renovations, to care for local homeless children, or participate in local summer camps with ISpiice. The value of education in this part of the world is 40

significant. India is a less economically developed country where it is particularly common for families to lack the disposable income to provide their children with a high standard of education. That’s where ISpiice’s volunteers come in, teaching both women and children key life skills and English that makes them all the more employable and boosts their sense of self-worth. ISpiice also offers a program that focuses on revamping the health system. Like the education system, India lacks a comprehensive medical scheme and adequate medicinal resources. ISpiice attempts to remedy this through health awareness training programs that seek to protect communities from the glaringly obvious gaps in the health system. Choose from a range of levels of teaching, from posts in primary schools to private tuition. One of the most popular choices when volunteering is physical work to restore local community buildings. These renovation projects are offered by ISpiice, and are a fantastic way to explore your creative side by creating cheerfully artistic public spaces. Schools and village halls serve as a crucial centrepiece to rural communities, but are often dilapidated due to a distinctive lack of public funding, and are ravaged by harsh weather. ISpiice ask volunteers to help

clear these spaces and design artwork and paint walls to create a bright, fun space for communities to congregate.

snow-capped mountains of Manali and explore the Himalayan mountain range and witness its unique wildlife on a fun-filled hiking expedition.

ISpiice also offers a program that targets women’s empowerment. The gender gap in rural India is significant, and can only be eradicated with the help of non-governmental organisations (NGOs). ISpiice’s project involves a series of training activities, classes and teaching projects that help boost local women’s sense of value and their chance for social mobility.

Securing your place on one of ISpiice’s unforgettable projects is straight-forward, with prices starting at just £264/$555AUD for 2 weeks – making ISpiice’s programs some of the most affordable on offer. This price is inclusive of airport transfers, daily meals and trips to local tourist sites! The cost also covers all accommodation in the communal volunteer house. Choose from a variety of start dates, and secure travel to your ultimate destination with a pre-arranged pick up from Delhi airport. Projects take place in various villages that are situated in the Kangra Valley district, a popular location for travellers for its abundance of natural beauty.

Aside from the extensive range of volunteer projects offered by ISpiice, the NGO also offers some fun activities outside of volunteering so that your time as a volunteer is nicely balanced with exploring the local region. With your fellow volunteers, you can explore the rolling hills of the Kangra Valley, and visit some of India’s most cherished landmarks such as the Taj Mahal, or the world famous Sikh Golden Temple. QUEENSLAND

Fraser Island's Top 5 Otherwise known as K’gari, this heritagelisted island is bursting with long beaches and wide areas of rainforest. With plenty of summer activities on offer, here are our top five. Swimming In Lake McKenzie With water so pure even wildlife can’t survive in it, Lake McKenzie really is an incredible place. One of Fraser Island’s 100+ freshwater lakes, Lake McKenzie is without a doubt the star with a beach of pure, white silica. A day resting on the shore and swimming in its crisp water is pretty amazing. Trekking Through The Rainforest Fraser Island is the biggest sand island in the world – even the rainforest grows out of it. The flora has more than enough nutrients to grow thanks to naturally present special fungi that are mixed in the sand. Trekking beneath the sky-high canopy is a unique experience to Fraser Island. Whale Watching From Indian Head Indian Head is a spectacular coastal headland with views looking out over the ocean. As a result, it’s an ideal platform to spot dolphins, turtles and

52

www.bbmlive.com

sharks, as well as humpack whales during the migration season between June and October. Camp Under The Stars Have an authentic island experience by camping under the stars and soak up some culture in the meantime. With a campfire, beach cricket, sunset fishing, guitar and didgeridoo to play with, it’s a great way to get to know your fellow campmates before you fall asleep under the stars. This is as close as it gets to sleeping on the beach and the perfect way to spend the night during summer on Fraser Island. 4WD Along 75 Mile Beach Driving on the sand island is as much fun as it is challenging, so as long as you’re smart you’ll be safe and have a wicked time. Travel just a fraction of the length of 75 Mile Beach as you manoeuver your 4WD. With guides on hand, you can be driven rather than drive and still feel the exhilaration that comes with driving on Fraser Island. Tick off the top five experiences on Fraser Island with Drop Bear Adventures. Book your tour now at www.dropbearadventures.com.au

Make A Splash In The Whitsundays Spend up to five days in just your bathing suit as you explore this collection of paradise islands. Reef & Whitehaven Adventure

Awesome Whitsundays’ shortest package packs a lot in over three days. Jump on board Cruise 54

www.bbmlive.com

Whitsundays’ modern vessel and arrive at the permanent Reefworld pontoon for a Great Barrier Reef Adventure. Here’s your chance to go diving, snorkelling and swimming, or even take a scenic flight over Heart Reef for a little extra dollar. After another night in Airlie Beach, you depart for a thrilling day of sailing on board Camira, the famous purple catamaran. Help the crew hoist the sails, jump into the inviting blue waters for a spot of swimming and snorkelling and pay a visit to Whitehaven Beach – Australia’s number one beach for its white silica sand. From $399pp

Awesome Foursome

With an extra day in the Whitsunday Islands, you not only get to explore Airlie Beach, spend a day sailing on board Camira and another day snorkelling at the Reefworld pontoon, but you also spend a day island hopping. With your Island Hopper Pass, you have the chance to experience more of the Whitsunday Islands including the many attractions of Hamilton Island, or the Living

Reef Lagoon and nature walks on Daydream Island. From $599pp

Castaway

This is Awesome Whitsundays’ longest package, which might make you forget what the mainland feels like – just like the name! Become a castaway and soak up all that the Whitsundays has to offer. After a day in Airlie Beach, you explore the Whitsunday Islands with your Island Hopper Pass on day two. Then take to the sails on board Camira on day three and head to the Great Barrier Reef pontoon on day four. Rather than heading back to Airlie Beach when you’re all snorkelled out, you can enjoy sleeping under the stars on Reefworld – an unforgettable overnight experience. Wake up on day five to see what marine life welcomes you with a morning swim and snorkel. It’s not until 3pm that you head back to Airlie Beach to stay for one more night before saying goodbye to the Whitsundays. It’s peak turtle nesting and hatching season on this beautiful coral cay, so make sure you don’t miss your chance to witness one of nature’s greatest events. Heron Island is one of the few places in the world where you can watch Green and Loggerhead turtles nesting and baby turtles hatching before making the quick dash into the ocean. Hatching all the way to the end of March after hiding beneath the golden sands for 60 days, now is a great time to book a

stay at Heron Island Resort if you want to witness this amazing act of nature. Sitting on the Great Barrier Reef off the Queensland coast, Heron Island is an incredible destination to stay for a few days and relax. Day trips aren’t permitted, so you (and the turtles!) won’t be surrounded by crowds of people while embracing all that Heron Island has to offer. Soaking up the peace and tranquility, you can easily make use of the swimming pool, restaurant, private bedrooms and spa treatments, as well as plenty of land and water activities. To enhance your experience of the turtles, Heron Island provides a guided tour during which a trained naturalist guide will help you find a nesting turtle, explain the nesting process and answer any questions you have about these spectacular ancient marine reptiles. While you’re allowed to search for nesting turtles by yourself, you’ll get the best experience with a guide. It’s also best to go with a guide to ensure you don’t disturb the nesting or hatching turtles, ensuring you watch from a distance and don’t use any unnatural light. Other activities can see you snorkel right off the beach or in the surrounding reefs for just $50pp, book a Discover Scuba Diving class for $199pp and explore some of the 20 nearby dive sites, or head inside Heron Island’s one-of-a-kind purposebuilt semi-submersible boat to stay dry while seeing what lies beneath the water, including rays and reef sharks. If you’re looking for romance, you can’t go wrong with the Sunset Wine and Cheese Cruise as another day ends on Heron Island. Alice Springs To Adelaide Explorer

Traverse from an iconic outback town to the South Australian capital. Alice Springs is the leap pad to some of the stars of the outback, and this tour wouldn’t be the same without them, so your experience begins at an authentic outback camel farm, the traditional desert transport. As an optional extra, you can see just how it feels to ride on the back of one of these residents. Back on your feet, you and your tour group head off to Kata Tjuta – 36 dramatic domes discovered on a Valley of the Winds hike – before watching the sunset over Uluru, otherwise known as Ayers Rock. Take in the clear night sky as you sleep beneath the stars in your traditional Aussie swag.

The best way to see the outback is to get your hiking boots on, fill up your water bottle and join a group tour to get up close to the dramatic Australian landscape. So what better way to travel from Alice Springs to Adelaide? On this 6-Day Alice Springs To Adelaide Explorer, not only do you experience one of the most famous parts of the world, it will also get you from A to B.

62

www.bbmlive.com

INTERVIEWS

HOT CHIP

You released ‘Why Make Sense?’ in May, and then ‘Dancing In The Dark’ EP shortly afterwards; what was the motivation behind it? We’ve been playing this cover of ‘Dancing In The Dark’ at the end of our shows and it’s a nice moment, crowds have been really enjoying it. We’ve often been joined by other people we’ve played with like David Byrne from Talking Heads or Caribou. We wanted to go into the studio and capture that as we play it live. Will you continue to end your show with it when you make it out to Australia? We were planning to stop doing it, but it seems a bit crazy to do that because people might want to hear it now. I think we’ll keep it going until we’ve been around the world once with it and then stop and do something else. For the Australia tour, we’ll do some more rehearsing and come up with some new stuff to do. I suppose if you keep playing the same set, you’ll tire of it… Yeah, absolutely. It’s an interesting mixture for us because we try to make the set flow perfectly. We do have certain combinations of songs that we’ve been doing for quite a while, but we keep doing that because it works with the way the set 74

www.bbmlive.com

is constructed. We try to refresh certain parts and bring back old tracks that we feel people might like or we wanna play. We really value making the set enjoyable and entertaining for a crowd – we’re not the kind of band that will go on and play loads of B-sides for obscurity and just piss people off. What live shows spring to mind from over the years? Tiny places are really memorable because they’re sweaty and fun and full of energy. There was one tiny one in Portugal that got so sweaty there was sweat dripping off of the ceiling and falling into our keyboards and making them go totally haywire – my keyboard that usually plays bass lines started making these tweeting bird noises! Those gigs stick in my mind because of that kind of intensity. And then big festivals – we had one in Brazil where the crowd was so into the show it felt like the front rows were doing this synchronised Samba dancing. At UK festivals like Glastonbury, we’ve had amazing moments that really define our career. The last time we played Coachella in California was a memorable moment because my family were out with me and we had a great show just as the sun was setting in the desert.

SANTIGOLD

Hi Santi! How are you? Where in the world are you at the moment? I’m good, thank you. I’m in Brooklyn, New York, heading to a video edit session. What kind of sound did you have in mind for ’99 Cents’? I didn’t really have any sound in mind, actually, I just waved in and started making music. I usually do it that way – I just let the process be and see how things come out. How does this album differ from your previous two? I think this one is a little bit broader. There are some influences that maybe weren’t on the other records. I got some African music influences on this one and there’s a lot of sub base mixed with goth influences and R&B! I consider my music genre-less; I think that’s one of the defining characters of my music. All my albums have a collage style and this characteristic is always consistent on Santigold records. What specific themes do the songs on ’99 Cents’ cover? It talks a lot about consumption and narcissism and the fact that everything is a product. The constant marketing of ourselves as a product. It

also talks about the challenges as an artist in this creative climate and the personal struggle that I’ve had in there. It talks about a lot of things. It really is just a picture of pop culture. Are there any lyrical highlights? The lyrics of ‘Can’t Get Enough Of Myself’ are definitely about narcissism. My goal of the album was to really tackle these issues but from a very playful approach so the songs are humorous and fun but at the same time they are topical. ‘Walking In Circles’ is definitely one as well. What’s the vision behind the album’s cover art? As I was listening to the songs, I wondered “What is the theme of this album?” I thought it was really important to make this a fun album. I wanted to take all the concepts and play with them and really highlight the uncertainty of it all, but in a really fun and playful way. I had this idea for the record cover which was basically me climbing into a bag full of these items that represent all the different areas in my life. I really thought me climbing into the bag, shrink-wrapping myself with the items and strapping a 99 cents tag on it, would be the perfect way to sum it all up [Laughs]. What are your immediate music career goals? Get a broader audience than I’ve ever had before and reach more people who can connect with my music.

PANIC! AT THE DISCO

Panic! At The Disco are releasing their fifth studio album, ‘Death of A Bachelor’, on 15th January. Now the solo project of vocalist and musician, Brendon Urie, we found out more about the record, the song writing and the music videos from the man himself. You’re releasing ‘Death of a Bachelor’ on 15th January; is this a mourning or a celebration? It’s 100% a celebration. I wanted to call it ‘Death of a Bachelor’ because the entirety of the record is celebratory about what I’ve become and the new era that I’m celebrating, jumping into this new me. Calling it that was really fitting. You’ve commented before on how the songs are true stories that have happened in your life; do you ever worry that you’ve shared too much? Nah, not really. Maybe I am that too-muchinformation guy where I share a little too much, but I never feel guilty for it. I have nothing to hide, there’s nothing about me that couldn’t be shared. Have you ever considered to be a solo artist and release as Brendon Urie? Well, this band is a solo project because it’s kind of ended up that way, but I didn’t intend for it to be that way when I joined. I was 18 at the time and thought we’d be four guys in a band forever, but that didn’t happen. But the passion I have for this band has never changed. Panic! has given me 76

www.bbmlive.com

everything – it’s shown me the world, taken me to Australia, to the UK, to Brazil. I’ve never once had the inkling to disgroup. For me to be able to keep doing this is such a fortunate thing for me – I feel so grateful and blessed. Even talking to you about it is so wild! A huge part of Panic! is the music videos, and the one for ‘Emperor’s New Clothes’ looks quite traumatic, but was it fun to shoot? It was very fun to shoot! It was demanding – it was a three-day shoot and each day I had to sit in make up for four hours. I am so happy we did that because the director, Cloud Campos, he takes the camera and he’ll dance with me as I’m moving so that adds a lot to the aesthetic. I feel so fortunate to be able to work with people that are that creative and want to make the best product. Do you have a favourite track on ‘Death Of A Bachelor’? I have a couple, but the title track for me is pretty special. That was something I’d written separately – not thinking of it as part of an album – to see if I could write a Sinatra song. When I sat down to write that one it happened so organically. It felt like I was channelling Sinatra, watching his videos, thinking about how he songs a song, and it went out of my control because I’d been working on a separate song that was kind of hip-hop, and I mashed them together and it worked out perfectly.

LUISA OMIELAN

You had your first taste of Australia’s comedy festival season in 2015. How was your experience? I had the best time ever. I loved it. Australia is very laidback – maybe too laidback for my liking! It meant that, when I came back to London, I was relaxed about everything! It became a bit of a working holiday! Your comedy style is a breath of fresh air; what was the audience reaction like to your fearless encouragement of self-love? They were a bit reserved, actually! I was hoping they’d be a bit more up for it! This year, I’m hoping they’ll be a bit more up for it from the off! Do you think Am I Right Ladies? will be able to do that? Oh, yeah! If there’s a show that can do it it will be Am I Right? They responded so well to the thigh gap routine so if they like that they’re gonna love it!

With regards to the thigh gap routine, it’s been watched 30 million times on YouTube. With that amount of views, will you be doing the routine as it is or will you be mixing it up a bit? No, it’s the routine as it is. It’s from the show and the video is an edited version so you get to see the full version live! Ahh, so what’s the full version? Well, you’ll have to come and see the show! How have you found men to react to your stand-up? They love it! A lot of men go, “Thank you! I love my girlfriend’s body exactly as she is and I wish she didn’t beat herself up so much.” They like the message and they don’t expect it, it’s nice. Festival season means you’ll be spending about two months in Australia; what would you like to get up to this time? I would like to go out a bit more – I didn’t go out much because it was stressful and quite full on. I’d like to see more of the sights, do some shopping – get my summer wardrobe! – and maybe go on some dates with local guys and girls to get shown around by people that are local to the area, rather than just being with other comedians. It would be nice to meet proper Aussies! Will you be taking anything with you from the UK? Maybe some PG Tips because I know you guys are good with your coffee but you can’t get a good cup of tea in Australia!

Coming Up in 2016... NoMBE

NoMBe, or Noah McBeth, a 23 year-old German singer who relocated to LA in 2013, is grabbing everybody’s attention turning his hand to producing a number of artists alongside working on his own signature sound. Formerly producing under the name RookieTheCook, NoMBe is making a new name for himself these days releasing his debut EP Change of Hearts last year. His unique sound stands apart from anything you are currently hearing with each track being completely distinct. Influenced by boom bap and trip hop artists including Nujabes, Pete Rock, DJ Premier, and Quantic, the classically trained pianist blends indie and soul with a hint of hip-hop. Following the overwhelming success of his recent single, ‘California Girls’, the multi-talented producer returns with a new track ‘Kemosabe’ in which he continues to prove his penchant for crafting genre-bending music. With his lyrics often touching on rough, true-to-life topics such as shady women, drunk uncles and loose morals, ‘Kemosabe’ was inspired by the lingering resentment that follows a break-up. NoMBE is currently touring in the U.S. and enjoying performing his material on stage. He told us, “I love when the whole crowd sings the records with me. It makes me feel like I’ve done my job!” With a new EP dropping very soon, we get the feeling this isn’t the last we’ve heard of NoMBe.

It’s safe to say that this 19-yearold Canadian singer-songwriter has taken the music world by storm ever since she went viral with ‘Here’, an ode to the introvert wallflowers out there. Def-Jam newcomer, Alessia Cara, made her debut in 2015, although she started racking up YouTube views a while before which eventually led to her discovery. She has achieved critical acclaim with her anti-social pop anthem, ‘Here’, expressing an exhilarating point of view on the party scene that feels both extreme and innocent. Her relatable song writing, realness and authentic lyricism is what makes her stand apart from the crowd. She manages to dig into those teenage years, yet simultaneously transcend age and gender. Her highly anticipated debut album, ‘Know-It-All’, has a clear message smashing the sweeping generalisations of modern-day youth. The album received a host of favourable reviews, picking up a gang of admirers along the way including Taylor Swift, Drake and Nick Jonas. Alessia’s co-writer, Sebastian Kole, helped Cara find and shape her sound as confessional alterna-pop that spans deep soul, folk balladry and trip-hop. She has announced a North American tour, set to kick off in mid-January and run through early April. It includes stops in cities like Montreal, Boston, New York, Chicago, Nashville and San Francisco.

Single Review – ‘Get It’ by Tei Shi Tei Shi, a Colombian singer who lives in Brooklyn, is known for creating sensual waves with nothing but her voice and loops. Her fame has grown steadily since the release of her 2013 ‘Saudade’ EP, but it was the hit ‘Bassically’, a synthy ‘80s pop ballad from her 2015 ‘Verde’ EP that made her win over quite a few hearts with her dream-dazed voice. Tei Shi has now unveiled her latest music video for ‘Get It’ taken from ‘Verde’, cut together with footage contributed by NASA. ‘Get It’ is the most R&B-influenced song off the EP, where she explores her upper range over minimal instrumentation. With an electric piano, ambient textures, and a reverb-soaked hi-hat and snare, she creates a dreamy and chillinducing atmosphere. The soul groove of ‘Get It’ gives Tei Shi the opportunity to truly show off her stunning vocals. Over a bass and snap-heavy track, she harmonizes with herself to no end for a mind-blowing track.

FUNNY NEWS

I remember when you were in nappies In a classic Beckhamesque twist, a mother in India has named her newborn child after the place where he was born.

Getting a taste for a life of crime The trouble with thieves is they obsess so much over material possessions and money. Sure if you broke into Katy Perry’s house, you could make a pretty sum by stealing her jewels and expensive trinkets but can all the money in the world really compare with the thrill of masturbating into her underwear drawer? The judge BBM spoke to disagreed with that defence, but we stand by it and would do it all over again if not for the restraining order. So it’s with a tip of the hat and a cheeky wink that we acknowledge a bloke in Prague who hid in a restaurant so he had the run of the place after staff had locked up for the night. But instead of helping himself to the cash register and legging it, like most narrowminded/successful thieves would, our man decided to gorge himself on a feast of gourmet food.

But there must have been a miscommunication somewhere along the way because instead of naming the kid Delhi, Mumbai, or even Hyderabad, she called him “Uber” because that’s what she used to get to the hospital. The driver, named as Shahnawaz Khan said: “I had asked them to call an ambulance, but the women said that they couldn’t get one. I pulled out the towels from the seats and poured some drinking water into a bowl. The child was born within minutes and I was really happy to see that he was responding.” Apparently instead of slapping the baby at birth, the driver tried to swipe right instead.

Driving home the letter of the law The first step in creating the world’s first Robocop may have been taken with the news that a woman’s car called the police to dob her in for a hit and run.

The greedy pilferer ate six geese, 13 pounds of goose fat and liver, three ducks and an entire one gallon jar of pickles.

The Florida felon, Cathy Bernstein, hit a truck and a van then tried to drive off before anyone caught her registration.

The Prague Post newspaper estimated that the alleged thief helped himself to roughly $800 worth of fine food, as well as washing it all down with several bottles of wine.

But her car’s emergency assistance feature automatically called 911, reporting the accident and location. At first she tried to bluff her way through the conversation with the operator. She said someone had simply pulled out in front of her as she was on her way home and did not know why her vehicle had called for help. She also said she hadn’t been drinking. No sir. No way.

Brilliantly, even that wasn’t enough for the fat felon, who decided to wrap up a doggy bag that included a strawberry cake and a beer. He also took some chef whites, possibly so he could just wipe all that goose and duck fat off his chubby fingers. Alas the, culinary criminal made his escape too late, and when the cleaner arrived he called police, who promptly arrested him. He now faces up to two years in prison although he probably won’t have to eat again for the entire period of his incarceration. 80

www.bbmlive.com

“Your car wouldn’t call us if someone pulled out in front of you unless there had been an accident,” the operator said to Ms Bernstein. Around that time, police were investigating a hitandrun report, in which the alleged victim said she was hit from behind by a black vehicle and it didn’t take long for the cops to put two and two together.

We bet David Hasselhoff never got this sort of shit off Kitt in Knightrider.

House hunting goes underground With the average Sydney house price exceeding the $89million mark this month, it’s getting harder and harder for firsttime buyers to get a foothold on the property market. But an outsidethebox thinker in Virginia has come up with a canny solution for young couples looking for somewhere small and cosy for their first home and it will only cost you the price of a spade. Unfortunately, police weren’t quite so keen on Yosue Joel Rios’s innovative idea for a new home a 15foot deep cave he’d dug inside a local park. Rios told police that he had dug it himself and covered the dirt he dispersed dirt around the park with leaves to hide it. Officers found a pillow and other personal items inside the cave, where the two rooms were five feet, ten inches tall.

Driving in the wrong gear A driver has been arrested for basically playing a game of “find the gear stick?” after being caught speeding while drunk and naked with three hot women as passengers. Now there’s a guy who knows how to live. Noe Dejesus no really, that’s his real name caught the attention of highway police following numerous calls from members of the public of a reckless driver doing 110mph on a main road at 3pm on Saturday afternoon. When a trooper finally stopped the car, he noticed Dejesus was shirtless and there was an open 12pack of Corona. He then asked Dejesus to get out of the car and that’s when his attempts to remain inconspicuous were blown because he was completely bollocknaked, stank of booze and slurred his speech. He was duly banned from driving and faces DUI charges. In a surprising twist, arrest records show Dejesus has a history of drug, gun, and theft arrests.

Gran gets into hairy situation In a pisspoor attempt to confuse genders not seen since Shakespeare’s last stab at comedy, a grandma tried to contact her grandson at school by donning a fake beard and blagging her way into the building. Grey-haired Gloria Laniece Bryan was desperate to see the boy after falling out with his parents. The 66-year-old, who was allegedly pretending to be an old man and had a walking frame, found her grandson in the Iowa City High school cafeteria. Apparently she handed him a toy and some sweets, but fled after staff quickly identified her. She was then arrested for being a bloody nuisance and charged with trespassing and third degree harassment.

Stripped of his dignity For any selfrespecting man, the only thing worse than being unemployed is taking a job as a male stripper. But Mark Hetherington clearly cashed in his self respect at Cash Converters a long time ago after claiming benefits while also working nights as Ian Kognito – the stripping ninja. Hetherington, 51, hoped the mask he wore on stage would protect him against being found out, however investigators compiled multiple videos of him stripping in clubs, festivals and private parties all over the UK. As he was also claiming assistance payments for cooking for himself and cleaning his teeth, and said leaving his house caused him to have panic attacks, we can see why people were a little pissed off at the revelation.

SPORTS NEWS

McGregor’s rival on the chopping block IT’S been almost a month since Conor McGregor hammer-fisted his way into our hearts, and the history books, with a brutal blow to the glass jaw of Jose Aldo - crowning himself the undisputed UFC featherweight king in the process. Yet despite that, MMA fans are still waiting on fellow fighter Joe Riggs to make good on a pre-match promise to “cut his own dick off” if McGregor won the bout. What’s the hold up Riggs? Riggs made the somewhat surprising vow during a pre-match press conference, in which he also claimed McGregor’s previous opponent Chad Mendez “would have killed him” if he’d had a full training camp. “The fact that the guy (Aldo) who’s considered the pound-for-pound best fighter on the planet and he’s the underdog against this guy (McGregor) who’s fucking nothing,” said Riggs, with scant regard for clarity, sentence structure or grammar. “If he (McGregor) beats Aldo, I’ll cut my own dick off and throw it away.” McGregor took all of 13 seconds to brutalise Aldo, but despite the quick-fire victory, Riggs seems in no hurry to fulfill his promise and has been unusually quiet Predictably, McGregor fans have taken to Twitter to give him a helping hand, with some fans offering him the use of their hedge clippers. Others are worried his silence means something has gone wrong with his self-castration. Either way, it’s nice to know that UFC fans are so generous and caring. Well done guys. Someone who doesn’t seem quite so concerned with the health and wellbeing of his opponent, is McGregor’s potential next rival - Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone. “I don’t have a personal problem with Conor,” Cerrone said. “He’s playing the game. He’s a salesman. But if he wants to sell the fight, I don’t have a problem with that. If he wants to pump up the fight, I’ll slap him around and call him a little schoolgirl.”

Palace fans get drinking Pard-ner

It’s a well-known fact that Alan Pardew, like all good Premier League managers, is a bit of a twat. In fact, the stats gurus at Opta have proven that there’s a direct correlation between a manager’s success and his level of twattishness. Just look at Alex Ferguson - massive twat, massive success. Or Kevin Keegan, likeable lad, abject failure. So we were as surprised as anyone when straight-faced ‘Pards’ showed distinct signs of non-twattishness by dancing a jig in a pub full of Palace fans following his side’s hammering of former club Newcastle United. Pardew and his assistant Keith Millen joined a Palace fans’ group who were celebrating 10 years since forming at a Selhurst pub. Ok, he still looked like a right miserable bastard when he posed for photos but at least the thought was there. The bad news for Palace fans is that a drop in twattish behaviour will almost certainly lead to a drop in results.

Spray day for striker

Hats off to Sporting Lisbon striker Teofilo Gutierrez who’s come up with a fun new use for those vanishing sprays that referees use to ruin players’ boots. After scoring Sporting Lisbon’s third goal in a 3-1 Champions League win over Besiktas last month, the cheeky finisher pilfered the spray from the official and tried to incorporate it into his celebration.

Ten out of ten for originality, but the execution wasn’t quite as lethal as his finishing - as he just left a big puddle of white stuff on the ground (which, coincidentally, is BBM’s calling card whenever we break into Katy Perry’s house). The good-natured ref seemed to see the funny side though, having a little chuckle to himself as he booked Guiterrez.

Crisp finish from Leicester hot shot

On top of his record-breaking antics for Leicester City, Jamie Vardy has achieved another milestone that his lifted him straight into the pantheon of elite English strikers - he’s had a packet of Walkers crisps named after him. Eat that Shearer! Not only has someone just launched a petition to have a statue of the striker erected outside the King Power Stadium, Vardy has also been honoured with a limited edition packet of “Vardy Salted” potato delicacies. We don’t know whether Walkers’ resident Leicester fanatic Gary Lineker had anything to do with the decision, but packets of “Vardy Salted” were handed out to fans for free ahead of the big game against Chelsea last month. Naturally, the internet trolls were out in force following the Walkers announcement, with some suggesting that Walkers “plain” crisps were actually a tribute to James Milner.

Never say Neville again

Phil Neville’s days of hacking away at more talented footballers may have ended some time ago but it seems someone out there is determined to get revenge. Frankenstein-faced Neville, also known as “the handsome one” when pictured with his brother Gary, had his Instagram randomly hacked by a teenager last month - who then bizarrely used it to show photos of himself with his chest out. The topless, pouting Cristian Krimoo also deleted all of Neville’s previous photos but decided to keep his 370,000 followers - because fans of the former Everton skipper would clearly be a perfect audience for a vain, pampered model wannabe. When informed of the hack on Twitter, Neville replied: “I know! How do I get it back?” Which funnily enough is what he used to say the many, many times he gave the ball away.

Ref justice for striker

In a classic Judge Judy-style off-the-wall ruling, a Bundesliga footballer was made to referee a girls match as punishment for making misogynist comments to a female official who sent him off. Fortuna Dusseldorf’s Kerem Demirbay had to apologise to German FA (DFB) referee Bibiana Steinhaus for his comments immediately after his side’s 2-1 win at FSV Frankfurt. In addition to being fine €10,000 by his club, Fortuna also ordered the 22-year-old Turkey youth international to referee a girls’ match between SSVg Haan and BW Langenberg. ‘This is what happens at Fortuna when a young player makes a mistake,’ a post on Dusseldorf’s official Facebook page read. If only they’d gotten Andy Gray and Rickard Keys to commentate. It never reins but it pours at Stamford Bridge It turns out that Chelsea’s title defence isn’t the only big joke at Stamford Bridge following a festive prank on Cesar Azpilicueta. The defender turned up to work last month to find that his usual parking place had been taken by a reindeer. It’s a bit of a departure from previous Christmas pranks at Chelsea. Instead of a reindeer, it’s usually John Terry. And instead of a space, it’s usually their wife or girlfriend he’s inside. Still, it must be great for Chelsea fans to know their millionaire players aren’t too downhearted about their shocker of a season. “My place in the carpark was busy today...” tweeted Cesar with a shot of the reindeer, to show he had a sense of humour. It’s unclear if he was still laughing when he got home to find out John Terry had decided to bang his wife after all.

CRYSTAL BALLS

Taurus

An extreme allergic reaction to a new shampoo leaves you with the face of country music dullard Keith Urban. It wears off after a month but not until after you’ve been forced to make love to plastic-faced freak Nicole Kidman.

Aquarius

Product recall notice. Due to an error at our production facility, last month’s copy of Crystal Balls contained trace elements of almonds. Any Aquarians with a nut allergy who read their star sign for December should contact a doctor immediately. We apologise for any inconvenience.

Cancer

Isn’t it time you stopped setting yourself unrealistic new year resolutions? Come on, do you seriously think you’ll become the first person to set foot on Mars this year? And how much research have you actually done in your quest for a cure for cancer? Why not go for something more achievable like not eating at McDonalds, KFC or Hungry Jacks. With a bit of positivity and encouragement, even a useless lardass like you can achieve it.

Pisces

Have you tripped or fallen while reading a horoscope? Did reading a horoscope ever cause 84

you mental anguish, headaches or cause Pluto to fall out of alignment with Jupiter? Did you hurt your back as a result of carrying a water jug around for Aquarius? If you’ve had a horoscopebased injury or illness, then call Zodiac Compensation Lawyers 4 U - the premier star sign legal team. “My horoscope told me to expect a windfall, so I went out and spent my entire life savings on the pokies,” says Mrs B Aries from Geelong. “I called Zodiac Compensation Lawyers 4 U and now I’m back on my feet living in a homeless shelter.” Mr X Lunatic from Jakarta says: “My horoscope told me I’d meet the woman of my dreams - yet the previous night I had a nightmare about moors murderer Myra Hindley. The resulting psychologist fees crippled me financially, but Zodiac Compensation Lawyers 4 U won me back a cool $56 after successfully suing Mystic Meg.” Mr T Tinnitus of Tehran adds: “My horoscope told me my life was about to change for the better so I should stop looking down. I duly fell down a manhole. Thanks to Zodiac Compensation Lawyers 4 U, I had my bus fare to the hospital paid for in full by Russell Grant.” Call us today!

Gemini

(submitted by Buzzfeed) You’re walking to work when you’re approached by an old woman with a shopping trolley. You won’t believe what she does next!

Capricorn

Your attempt to write a children’s Christmas story about a magical snowman who comes to life on Christmas Eve and makes snow appear by masturbating, fails to woo publishers.

Scorpio

Don’t even think about it. Seriously, I will fuck you up.

Aries

There’s disappointment all round when you go to see the new Star Wars film and discover it’s just an in-depth documentary about the Reagan-era space-based defence system developed by the US in the 80s.

Libra

Due to an administrative error, you are drawn to play Manchester United in the next round of the FA Cup. In one of the competition’s biggest ever shocks, you manage to hold the Premier League giants to a 1-1 draw courtesy of a late own goal by Juan Mata. Louis van Gaal blames the result on a poor offside decision in the second half when replays showed you had kept Wayne Rooney fractionally onside, only for his ‘goal’ to be chalked off by the linesman.

Leo

You bump into Rick Allen, the one-armed drummer from Def Leppard. Apparently the band’s signature song ‘Pour Some Sugar On Me’ was written when he tried to make the rest of the group a coffee.

Sagittarius

You get a surprise while flicking through the January sales rack at Zara when you accidentally stumble across a lost Mayan tribe who have not had contact with the civilised world since the late 1300s.

Virgo

Always one to leave things until the last minute, you finally get around to starting your Christmas shopping.

ASK CRYSTAL Dear Crystal, You know how you can see the future in that crystal ball of yours, can you check to see if my neighbour is letting his dog out to shit on my lawn while I’m at work? He says he’s not but I bet he is. Little bastard. Yours, Jamal Dear Jamal, I’ve got better things to do with my time than looking at your lawn to see if a dog may or may not be shitting on your lawn. I’ve got half a mind to go round your house and slip one out myself just for asking me such a crap question. Bugger off. Dear Crystal, I’m a 39-year-old bricklayer from Cork, and I’ve been working on building sites ever since I left school. But my dream is to be the next big teen heartthrob. Dear Ciaran, So you like the idea of a load of hormonal girls screaming at you, do ya? Go away before I contact social services. Dear Crystal, My name is Sian, and my business is called Star Wipes. My product is toilet paper that’s been used by famous people, which I then sell online to eccentric fans. Just last month, I sold a skidmark by Kim Kardashian for over $100, which I collected by following her into a toilet cubicle and collecting any squares that escaped the initial flush. I’m asking for $100,000 to help with storage for my product (I currently keep them in my bedroom) in exchange for 30 per cent of my business. Dear Sian I’m afraid I’m going to have to interrupt you there because you seem to have confused my column with an episode of Dragon’s Den. And for that reason, I’m out. However I can offer you some toilet paper used by Malcolm Turnbull. He always forgets to flush after sex.
