TOP 10 TIPS FOR TRAVELLING SOUTH EAST ASIA ON A SHOESTRING
This month festival photographer and travel blogger Dave fills us in on his top 10 tips for travelling South East Asia on a shoestring.
Traveling South-East Asia truly changed my life in many ways, and I’m always recommending people to plan a trip out this beautiful region of the world. So many people think that traveling is expensive, but that honestly can’t be further from the truth. South-East Asia is the perfect place for budget travel, and I’ve learned quite a bit during my time out there. So if you’re looking for some travel tips for Asia on a shoestring, I’m here to help! 1 ) TRAVEL SLOW
To begin, when I was backpacking through SouthEast Asia, I had all the time in the world. I arrived in Bangkok on a one-way ticket, and had no set return date. If you’re in the same situation, then my absolute best tip I can give you is to travel slow. Stay in each destination a bare minimum of 4-5 nights. This is going to give you the opportunity to get to know each destination, figure out the best and affordable accommodation, and learn your favorite budget places to eat. You never know, you might enjoy a place so much you will find yourself getting a job at the local pub-crawl or hostel. However, if you’re on a ‘Travel Talk Tours’ Thailand Tour then you’ll be on a bit more a time schedule which is great if you’re travelling solo.
2 ) EAT LIKE THE LOCALS
South-East Asia is the street food capital region of the world. In almost every place you will visit, there will be night markets with delicious food stalls, and I can guarantee they will always be cheaper than any restaurant. This is especially crucial if you are in Thailand, which is my personal favorite for street food dining! I stayed in Chiang Mai for one month, and the food was absolutely incredible!
3 ) STAY AT HOSTELS This should be an obvious one for anyone looking to save money in Asia. There are so many incredible and budget friendly options to choose from, and you can find beds for as low as $5 per night. I always like to do ample amount of research on Hostelworld before I book anything, and try to find a hostel with a lively backpacker atmosphere! Traveling is all about the people you meet, so you want to be in an environment where it’s easy to meet like-minded travellers.
4 ) PRACTICE & MASTER BARGAINING You’re definitely going to get ripped off once or twice. Don’t worry — it happens
to all of us, but you will need to practice and master your bargaining skills. The locals in these countries will try and get as much money out of you as possible (especially in Vietnam), so know how much you should be paying for each item, and bargain them down!
5 ) BRING YOUR OWN DRINKS If you were to walk into a restaurant in Australia with your own water bottle, you might be told that that’s not allowed or get some awful looks. Well, in SouthEast Asia it is completely fine! I NEVER ordered drinks when I ate out, because the prices were always much higher than what you would find at the 7-11 across the street. It’s a tip that I think can save tons of money throughout your trip in Asia.
6 ) PRE-GAME WISELY South-East Asia is one of the best places to party, but just like anywhere in the world, drink prices will add up. That’s why I always recommend buying a bottle of a local spirit, and play some drinking games at the hostel before you go out. It’s a fantastic way to start your night, make some friends, and save some money (since you won’t have to spend a lot out at the bars).
7 ) DON’T BUY SOUVENIRS As a long-term solo traveler, I never had the space nor budget for souvenirs. It’s my personal belief that the best souvenirs are pictures and the memories. Obviously, if there is something you
really want, then definitely get it! Just be careful, it can be very easy to see all these fancy little tourist shops and want to buy stuff, only to realize you don’t have the space or need for any of it.
8 ) JOIN THE FACEBOOK GROUPS While this may not be an actual money saving tip, these groups are absolutely essential! You can ask all your important questions here (or feel free to email me), and learn about cool stuff going on in each destination. I was an active member in the south-east Asia backpacker groups during my time out there, and truly found them useful!
9 ) OVERNIGHT BUSSES & TRAINS / CHEAP FLIGHTS While some people may disagree with me on this point, I always found that the overnight busses and trains were a great way to save money. They can get you from Point A – Point B in a decently comfortable way, and they save you a night of accommodation. With that being said, South-East Asia has some incredible budget airlines that you can find some great deals on! If you can take a 2-hour plane ride instead of a 12 hour bus…then why not?
10 ) DOWNLOAD MY FREE E-BOOK If you’ve found these tips helpful, then you will absolutely love my Free E-Book “77 Amazing, Helpful, Money Saving Tips for Backpacking South-East Asia”. I wrote while I was staying on Perhentian Kecil, Malaysia — and tons of people have said they really love it! It’s short, easy to read, and you will learn a lot available via my website

EUROPE’S CRAZIEST
Don’t run away! When we say “culture” we’re not talking about Baroque fairs and lute recitals. Europeans have deep and relevant ties with their ancestors’ customs and cultures, and as such their biggest and best parties have an ancient connection that isn’t found in more modern societies. That doesn’t mean, however, that they waste their partying time lamenting the passing of the olden days. Nay, European cultural festivals are booze-soaked knees-up, where entire villages/towns/cities turn out to get utterly sideways in the same way they’ve been doing since, in some cases, Jesus was just but a lad. Here’s a little list of some of the more cultural shindigs that we’ll be hunting down in 2017. SPRINGFEST/FRUHLINGSFEST Well, we guess that the historical and cultural significance of Springfest
is that historically and culturally Germans in general, and Bavarians in particular, have a thing for ringing in, or out, the seasons with copious amounts of the amber ale. Springfest is when the locals bid farewell to the harsher winter months, and ring in the breeding season with abundant beer, delicious food and, well, breeding (or practice breeding). LAS FALLAS Continuing the pre-Christian, pagan ritual of burning bonfires in order to chase away the winter, Las Fallas is the city of Valencia’s biggest party of the year, with almost the entire population turning out to watch giant and intricate statues go up in flames. 2017 will be no different, as carpenters and artists the city over collude to build the beautiful, 20-metre statues with the most flammable materials that they have on hand, before unleashing the pyromaniacs on them around midnight. Why? Because they’ve
been doing it forever, that’s why. LA BATALLA DE VINO DE HARO Back in the day the local regent decided to end a border dispute once and for all by demanding that the residents of Haro, La Rioja, annually mark their village’s territory with purple flags. Given that Haro is one of the world’s premier redwine regions it didn’t take long for the flags to be stained with the local produce, before the annual flag marking descended into an all-in pitched battle where red wine is the only armament allowed. This is the perfect party for wine connoisseurs and lovers of mayhem alike. SAN FERMINES What, you thought that filling the streets with raging bulls was a new concept? The Running Of The Bulls has its origin in the old tradition of silly youths proving their bravery by trotting along with bulls when they were transported from farm to bullring. It proved to be such a popular method of proving one’s masculinity that these days there’s a multi-million euro industry built around what is essentially a terrible idea. If you’re not a thrill seeker, or have a moral aversion to the concept, don’t forget that the actual bull run takes up about five minutes of
each day -- and the rest is filled with sangria-soaked street parties. LA TOMATINA Ok, well this one really does just seem like it’s a gratuitous excuse to send high-velocity salad vegetables towards people’s faces. The history of this one is murky, and constantly changing, but it’s most likely that sometime in the last century a bunch of youths got a little bit frisky with an over abundant tomato stock and started slinging the red terrors at whoever had the misfortune of wandering into their range. The youths, however, were calling on the ancient Spanish tradition of throwing things in way of celebration, and now all over the country we find crazy parties involving projectiles, like this turnip throwing event that takes place every year in the mountains of western Spain’s Extremadura region. Any of these festivals spark up your need to be a well-cultured global citizen? Or has your desire for celebratory mayhem been aroused? Why not combine multiple fiestas under the one ticket with the Stoke Travel passport, and treat yourself to an educational tour around the world’s wildest parties. www.stoketravel.com
SNOWBOMBING 2017
When it comes to snow festivals, it doesn’t get much bigger than Snowbombing. Taking place each April in Austria’s Mayrhofen, this festival combines the very best winter sports with one of the toughest line ups of any festival.
With the dramatic backdrop of the Austrian Alps, this year’s Snowbombing festival will see the likes of Run The Jewels, Courteneers, Novelist, Groove Armada, DJ Koze and Eli & Fur take to the slopes to unleash some grade-A tunes for the biggest apres ski session in Europe. 8497 feet up in the Austrian Alps you’ll also find a whole host of international DJ talent to send you truly off piste including Doorly, Huxley, David Rodigan, Eats Everything and more. But don’t let the abundance of world class talent on show completely take over, as there’s also some powder to be enjoyed. From black runs to blue runs and everything in between, Mayrhofen offers some incredible skiing and snowboarding, meaning you can blast off the cobwebs from the night before with serious action during the day. To relax you can take advantage of the luxury jacuzzis and prepare yourself for an afternoon and evening of icey hedonism. You wouldn’t think you’d be able to attend a pool party surrounded by snow, but at Snowbombing, anything’s possible. This year you can spend your afternoons getting wet and wild at the daily pool parties and warm up after a day in the snow. When it comes to extraordinary settings, this snow festival has it by the bucketload. From raving in an igloo, to the Mountain Stage and the
Snow Park Terrace, each way you turn there’s something otherworldly to look at. As Fatboy Slim so eloquently put it “there’s no shared experience in the world as mental as this.” With fun and excitement cascading down every slope, you’ll experience that festival feeling every second of the 5 day festival. Kick back and relax at Rompa’s Reggae Shack before fuelling up on some Bavarian sausage at Hans The Butcher - a must for any Snowbombing survivor. New for Snowbombing 2017 will be Pat Sharp’s Fun Haus - an homage to the 90s. Here you’ll be able to take a trip down memory lane as you sing and dance your way through the likes of Daft Punk, Oasis, Pulp and more. It’s worth remembering when you’re at any destination festival that you’re in a different country, so get involved with a little culture. The town of Mayrhofen will be celebrating The Leder-Hoedown - a traditional Austrian party in the centre of the village. Here, you’ll be able to try some local food and listen to some traditional oompah sounds, courtesy of Zell Brass. This year you’ll be pleased to know that you can put down a deposit for this usually sell-out festival - which also means you can spread the cost! Snowbombing takes place from 3-8 April 2017. You can book now for just £130 deposit +BF at snowbombing.com
ANDY C “I don’t care whether its new, whether it’s old, whether it came out a couple of months ago, if it’s a good tune is getting played”
BBMLive’s Hannah Shakir speaks to the Drum n Bass legend, Andy C about his residency at London’s XOYO, playing in the Czech Republic as well as DJ-ing next to the Great Wall of China… casually. Hi Andy, how are you? Not bad not bad thank you. Up and at ‘em. Getting ready for the weekend
Yeah what’s your week been like so far? It’s been hectic but good. I ended up with a nice social down the pub last night so, so er… couple of Neurofen this morning. But yeah, been busy, been in the studio, you know, normal weekday stuff. And you’re hitting up XOYO tomorrow, what’s it been like playing the residency there?
It’s been one of the most fulfilling things I’ve ever done as a DJ, well by far, it’s just beautiful vibe every week. Every week is different you know. Different guests come down to the party, you know, so the night takes a different vibe, a different era, yeah man, love it. Is it nice to do something on a bit more of an intimate scale rather than the bigger stuff or?
It’s brilliant I mean it was quite a few years since I’ve done it and I’ve never done a residency really since you know way, way back, back, back then. So it’s a challenge you know because maybe 10% of the crowd go every week. And then we ask people to come down 3, 4 times during the run and then there’s people that come in for the odd night out. From a DJ perspective every sound has been different, different
sounds, different mixes, you know, nothing’s been repeated so it’s a bit of a challenge. You know being in a small underground environment, it really gets on a vibe with the crowd with all that energy. When it’s going off during the month, it’s wickedness! I love people leaning over the deck, jumping, you know smacking the walls [laughs] for me it’s vibes. So you went to the Czech Republic last week. What was the vibe like over there? Yeah, that was like we did XOYO Friday and you know that was incredible, couple hours sleep and then airport and then Czech Republic. I think there was maybe, I don’t know… 8000? Something like that at the event – 7 or 8000, massive. But beautiful in its own way, but completely different. But you know Czech Republic is always really, really, cool, because Drum n’ Bass is probably the biggest market in Europe, because they do a festival, Let It Roll Festival in the summer, you know, which is elevated stages and every stage is Drum n’ Bass, but like every stage is a different style and you know upwards of 30,000 people going to the festival and so it’s such a strong crowd over there. Speaking of traveling around your off to Snow Bombing as well and what do you like personally for you, what’s the best thing about snow festival verses a summer festival? I think it definitely brings a unique raver, a unique mentality. I mean,
when you’re arriving in Mayrhofen, when the festivals going on you just get a sense of fun and mayhem really. Especially if you turn up at night and you see everybody, they come off the mountain, they might have had a bit of après ski on the way down. And then it’s a vibe and then you see people in fancy dress and then you got, you know, just that whole really nice wintery resort vibe going on. And then obviously, come night time everybody just goes crackers down there. And you just get the after party and the sport hotel downstairs; you go in the forest and rave it up. It’s a really unique festival. I’ve been lucky enough to go back for quite a few years now. The sense of fun is quite unlike any other to be honest with you. And are you going to have any time to do any skiing or snowboarding while you’re there? I’m not actually, no, ‘cause I need to get back and well I can’t is the honest answer, I can definitely do the après bit as I mentioned. I don’t mind watching other people do it from the comfort of the bar. That’s for sure, but you know, I’ve not really got time to do lessons this time, I need to get around [to it]. I did it years ago, it was so much fun and I just don’t have the time to get around to it, I got to get back and travelling elsewhere. So in your opinion how much would you say has Drum n Bass changed over the years do you find yourself dropping old classics when you’re playing or have you had to evolve
for a new generation of ravers? Well, it’s like I haven’t had to evolve I just evolved as an individual. I love music, I love new music. There’s definitely now a part of me that’s like “I only like that era”. I love the genre I love every part of it, I always play classics but I don’t play them because I need to drop a couple of classics here. I play them because they’re great tunes. I’m not one of these DJs alright I’m militant I’m only playing 2 hours of brand new music. I don’t care whether its new, whether it’s old, whether it came out a couple of months ago, if it’s a good tune is getting played. I just play it because everything really from the scene and the crowd and the vibe dictates what that’s going to be. Having a passion for new music how do you sort of tend to find new artists because I know you got like new artists being out in RAM Records how do you come across these people and what do you look for? People get brought to my attention or I might get their people sending me links on Soundcloud. And it’s always that final that someone that’s a little bit unique. The one thing is being unique and that’s difficult because everybody is influenced by people but if you’re going to be an artist and you spend your whole time trying to sound like somebody else, you’re not going to break through are you, because there’s already that somebody else that’s fulfilling that role. I think when somebody’s got that little unique angle. And it
can basically be difficult sometimes because, well in dance music in general, because I guess there are certain parameters of the genre. You’ve got to make people dance, the tempo’s got to have a beat, the mix has got a be a certain way, I think it’s the unique touches of musicality that I could hear in a song or maybe a little bit of humor. I don’t mean telling jokes but I mean like adding a little bit of character that stands out to me now-a-days, because you know there are millions of songs at our finger tips 24 hours a day aren’t there, ultimately for me it’s the one’s that are going to jump out are the people that have invested a little bit of personality and character in it. And you know you were speaking about how you love it when people go crazy, when was the first time that you realized your effect on the people you’re playing to in a club? When did it really hit home for you? What – how exciting it could be? Well I guess… I don’t know, there’s really early memories of playing Sunny Isles in Hackney, and dropping a tune that was really personal to me that I loved, on Biting Back Records, funky number. You know it wasn’t like typical hard core. Just seeing the reaction and everybody being up, everyone was really into it as well and it was a really personal record for me that didn’t get played out much and I was like, “Ah that’s a cool vibe” you know what I mean, like that really worked and in terms of dropping beats playing at the Wax Club, or
maybe when I did Really Magic at the Equinox in Leicester Square – it was flame throwers going off, I mean this place went OFF! I was literally shaking. My arm… trying to put the bloody needle on the next record. It was just like “Oh my God, that just went nuts!” So it really took me back. The reaction was like “This is exciting”. I never forget that. I remember a lot of my mates heading off to One Nation to see you, what are some highlights of that One Nation and that era? There’s loads, I mean One Nation, they did a big gig at Wembley once. One Nation always makes me think
of the island in Ilford, or the Stratford Recs. Really good memories, you know, like pulling up, because we always used to be running around doing 2 or 3 shows in a night, so you’d crisscross the country, you’d bump into the other DJs and MCs getting out the car and going away walking through the crowd and I think the era when One Nation was really coming to the fore as an event was an exciting era of the music. Sky FX was doing those really big tunes, and there was lots of big anthems, really big tunes every week. It was just a really cool vibe. It was all exciting, you know when it’s all new and fresh. That’s what that era makes me think of.
I just remember those cases with all the cassette tapes in them… Yeah, hahahaha, Oh God yeah! They used to come out like the week after and you’d get like 16 TDK tapes of everybody’s sets. I don’t even have a tape deck now, but you know what? Anywhere you went in the world these tape packs, they hit every corner of the globe and they helped because for some people in the world it was their only access point, there’s wasn’t the internet. It was their only access point to this crazy music. And just going back on the sort of travel side of things, because you’re obviously around all over
the place all the time, where has been one of the most outstanding locations that you’ve played in the world? Outstanding locations. Played a festival next to the Great Wall of China, that was pretty epic, yeah. I think looking back I wish I’d have done a proper touristy vibe there but it came right at the end of an Asia tour. I was on me own, and God I’d been everywhere. I remember the Powers That Be being like “Oh do a tour of Asia” and it’s like Asia is not a country it’s a continent and you know like flight was like 6 hours long and like every day. Listen, I’m not moaning, it’s cool, but by the end of
it I remember I got picked up from the airport in China and driven for hours to the Great Wall and I was like “Oh I think that’s the Great Wall of China. That’s pretty mad.” Did it, took a couple of photos and then it was like right your flight leaves in two hours you better drive back to the airport. Yeah I know, it was pretty mad. Where’s your favorite place to detox, relaxation destination? Anywhere that’s hot and sunny. A beach. It could be any one, as long as it’s not raining, I’m happy. Used to love going to Thailand. Paradise out there, it’s beautiful, but yeah, anywhere hot and sunny. Love chilling out in Ibiza like the other parts to Ibiza, you know, the hidden parts. So, I hear you’ve got a few releases planned for this year? Loads. Yes, got loads. I can’t give you names and dates yet. There’s four at the moment that we’re trying to work out structurally, but yeah, I’ve got loads of stuff. I mean I’m in the studio constantly which is really cool and I’ve got a remix coming out as well, so I guess you can say at this point, “watch this space”. But there’ll hopefully be something out in 4 weeks’ time and then if I manage to finish the tunes off they’ll be coming nice and consistently throughout the year. SONUS 2017 It’s no secret that Croatia has become the must go destination for summer music festivals, and with its many islands, stunning sea, ancients forts and fantastic weather the destination remains the premier rival to Ibiza when it comes to the European summer music scene.
Now in its fifth year, Sonus Festival returns for yet another edition of world class entertainment upon the shores of Pag Island. With the festival taking over the Island in August, revellers can party on the world famous Zrce Beach, dance the night away at the open air Kalypso club, or party at Papaya overlooking the clear Adriatic Sea and Velebit Mountain. Whilst at Sonus you can also take advantage of the boat parties, taking to the high seas to party under the sun soaked skies of Croatia. When it comes to visiting Pag Island there’s also an abundance of great restaurants to fuel you for your days and nights partying. The main city, Novalja stands out due to the beauty and uniqueness of its beaches, its unspoilt landscapes, its entertainment and nightlife, the quality of its cultural and historical sites, the multitude of facilities for recreation make it your main hub whilst at Sonus Festival. The great thing about this beachside festival is that it’s flexible depending on what budget you have. With camping readily available, you and your friends can save money - and with the weather remaining pretty good in August, there’s slim to no chance of having any wash outs. If camping isn’t your thing you can look at a package that includes accommodation, or simply look online for an apartment or hotel that’s near to the festival. This year’s festival is set to be one of the biggest ones yet as the organisers celebrate 5 years of Sonus. On the bill for 2017 you’ll find electronic heavy weights such as Richie Ahmed, Jamie Jones, Apollonia, Ricardo Villalobos, Richie Hawtin and many more. First release tickets are priced at 159 euros, with VIP tickets just 249 euros. www.sonus-festival.com
KRAFTY KUTS BBMLive’s Paraic Walker catches up with Brighton legend, Krafty Kuts ahead of his latest releases with hip-hop legend, Chali 2na and Dynamite MC to discuss what he’s been up to over the past couple of years and what he’s been up to over the past couple of years and what’s changed on the UK scene. Hello Martin, how’re you today? All good, just had some good sushi in Sydney getting ready for a busy week ahead. What are you up to there? I’m currently getting ready to shoot a video for my new single with Dynamite MC and Chali 2na called ‘It Ain’t My Fault’ from my forthcoming LP ‘All 4 Corners’. It’s still warm here but it has been raining on and off for the last few days.
What have you been up to this past week? I’ve mainly been in the studio recording vocals and working on some new beats with Chali. Touring around the world promoting our new song ‘Hand High’.
So 2017 is no longer in its infancy, how has the start of this year been for you? Extremely busy! I was in Australia and New Zealand on tour, then came straight back and hit the studio to get all the music ready for the tour with Chali for our new singles ‘Hands High’ and ‘It Ain’t My Fault’. Can’t believe we are already in March... this year is flying by so quickly!
We haven’t seen a full EP from you since ‘Let Ride’, back in 2012, why have you made us wait so long for the new album you’re about to release? Basically over the last few years I have been touring and working on DJ sets with A.Skillz and loads of DJ Mix concepts. I started my Golden Era podcasts, which take at least three months out of my time and I have done four so far. I worked on the Red Bull 3 style mixing competition. In 2015 I thought it was about time to lay down some fresh new sounds and take time out from DJing, or at least spend a bit less time DJing, which was difficult. My schedule was crazy with tours, but to get back and start writing music again just felt so good. I have never felt so positive about my
music and working with Dynamite MC has been great. You’ve never been one to settle in one particular genre, so what can your fans expect to hear on ‘All 4 Corners’?
I always like to try new ideas and styles on my LP’s, and on this one I have kept a more Hip Hop vibe; going back to my roots, but adding a few twists. There are some great collabs such as `Pav, Foreign Beggars, Example, Rodney P and more. I feel
like this is by far my best work to date, and I am always looking to push the boundaries and really enjoying making music more than ever. You’ve been in the UK dance scene for the best part of two decades now, what would you say has changed the most since you started out? So many new genres and sub-genres - that is one of the craziest things about music in the UK. The club scene has suffered due to the amount of Festivals there now are. Streaming music has had a massive influence on the scene and has made making money from music harder; as artists we get paid very small amounts for streaming. You’ve played shows all around the world, as your new album title pays homage to, but how good is it when you play hometown shows? Do you have any one venue in your native Brighton that you like playing the most? I have played nearly all the venues in Brighton and recently I did my first ever live show with Chali 2Na, which was amazing. Always a great feeling getting such a positive response in Brighton and I have had so many phenomenal moments over the years. I used to run a night called Supercharged for 10 years at Audio, Concorde 2 and a few other spots, and there were so many crazy shows but one night that stands out was at the funky Buddha Lounge when I dropped bass Phenomenon for the first time - was an incredible feeling.
The place went nuts and I knew then that making music & djing was the right path to choose. One of the highlights on the new album is ‘Ain’t My Fault’ which features Hip-Hop royalty Chali 2NA; how did that partnership come about? We had a mutual friend, Nick Middleton, from the Funk Hunters who I sent a track to, as he was touring with Chali last year. We got in the studio and made a track called ‘Hands High’, which came together perfectly. We immediately made another tune - this time for my LP with Dynamite MC and we were amazed how good the track came out. It has been going down really well on our live shows. You previously toured Australia with Dynamite MC, what was your favourite city to play in? I love Oz and have had some of the best shows of my life here; especially The Big Day out tour in 2008 with Dynamite MC. Sydney will always live with me forever; every show has always been wicked and the show with Kurtis Blow and A.Skillz at Field Day was incredible. Did the two of you have much time to have some fun outside of work over there? Do you have any good stories from the tour? It was a great tour and we always make time to visit friends, tourist spots and eat some good food, but it was pretty hectic to be honest, so no crazy stories! Those wild days are few
and far between now. I read somewhere that you used to run a Record Shop in Brighton, how many records do you own? And do you feel physical music will always have a place despite the digital age we now live in? Yes I did have a record store back in the late 90’s. It was basically where everything kinda started. I met Fatboy
Slim there gave him a track which he put out on Southern Fried and then went onto write 3 EP’s for the Ministry Of Sound. I also started my club night and record label Supercharged from that, so the shop played a pivotal part in my career. Where are you most looking forward to visiting in 2017? I am heading back to Asia for the first time in a while. There is a beach party
in Taiwan, followed by another one in Thailand, so those are cool trips in April to look forward to, plus I am taking my family on holiday as well. Bonus! Where’s the most interesting destination your career has taken you to? I have been to some crazy places; The Philippines was pretty cool, and
I’ve played beach parties in Thailand, forest parties in the mountains of Canada, on a submarine and in Turkish baths in Hungary. I’ve played in an Igloo in Austria and at a tiny place called Magnetic Island in Oz, so I have been blessed with some wonderful spots all over the world. That is why I love my job.l By Paraic Walker

THE SPACE IS WIDE OPEN JUST GO THERE
Australia’s most “out there” music, culture and arts festival is happening again in 2017! If you love adventure, appreciate unique immersive environments, and could see yourself enjoying lush sounds in an oasis in the beating heart of Australia, then Wide Open Space Festival invites you to join the party. This will be the 9th instalment of the Wide Open Space Festival, a multi-day festival held at Ross River Resort, nestled in the East MacDonnell Ranges under an hour’s drive from Alice Springs. The festival celebrates desert culture and the ancient landscape through its incredibly diverse creative program of music, art, workshops, performance. There is fun for
all the family, and plenty of family to be a part of. Expect headliner artists from around Australia and some big name Internationals. This year’s line up prove that there’s definitely something for everyone at Wide Open Space with Artistic Director, Scott Large stating, “We embrace all kinds of music at WOS! We’ve always celebrated sounds from across the spectrum from straight up live bands to experimental electronic to the downright theatrical. Alice Springs style has always been a bit of a mash-up, and that adds to the magnetism of this event and it’s part of what draws people from near and far to share these 3 special days.” Since winning the award for best NT Live Music Event of the year in 2016, WOS is renewing it’s commitment to local live
acts. With roots as deep as they go to the centre, and melodies that take their audiences there too, Kardajala Kirri-Darra (The Sand Hill Women) join the festival from the Northern Territory communities of Marlinja and Elliott. Performing songs in Mudburra and English, singing the story of what it is to be an Indigenous woman, walking in two worlds, their music sits in the space between the old and the new, journeying through the heart songs of their beautiful desert Country. Expect the fresh flavour of Indigenous Hip Hop with the Red Dirt Crew aka: D7’z and E Town Boyz and Hill Boyz, representing the local deadly mob from the Barkly region of the NT, these boys hail from three Aboriginal communities; spanning a radius of 700 kms. Bringing the massive vibe, with expertly crafted
beats and many lyrics in their own languages, these artists provide an important connection to the land and the history, every present. Alice Springs’ Dave Crowe A.K.A Resin Moon is amongst the initial lineup and says the landscape of Central Australia is a huge influence on his style of sophisticated, lush, experimental electronica; “The sense of space, the surreal, and beautiful landscapes are a source of endless inspiration to my sound.” he says. Another local live act in the line-up that will challenge the limits of physical and musical boundaries is Edi Donald and the Transients, well known for their morsels of ethereal, genrewarpers. Australia’s ultimate purveyor of change, evolution and exploration, Mojo Juju, is
bringing her strong soul-filled racquet to the centre once again, to delight and bemuse the WOS tribe with wild, soul filled tunes. Bringing more innovative live acts, WOS will host the electric two-piece, This Way North. With a universally appealing groove and melody, and an eclectic appreciation of the subtleties of interaction, This Way North’s first ever show at WOS promises to be powerful and engaging. WOSers will also experience the highenergy grooves of the 11 piece explosion that is the locally based Tamala Express. Delivering high energy grooves the Tamala Express fuses the centuries
old traditions of West Africa with contemporary styles, creating a vibrant blend of irresistible dance music that moves young and old alike with centuries old rhythms and high levels of audience engagment. The first WOS2017 announcement shows excellent representation of bass music for every audiophile. Monkey-man and UK legend Chimpo is freshly confirmed to bring his unique fusion of grime, drum n bass, dubstep, trap, garage, dancehall and hip hop, to stoke the dance-floors with serious movement. WOS will be witnessing the magic of Plutonic Lab, who’s latest LP “Deep Above The Noise” Won best Hip-Hop
Album at the Vic Music Awards 2016. Stand by for craftily blended Hip-Hop beats and lyrics with strings and piano, creating an ambient bigness for groovers and swayer’s alike. Bigging up the bass-driven sounds coming from England, WOS is stoked to announce that the incredibly talented and pioneering dj and producer J:Kenzo will be bringing his signature minimalistic sound of dub, jungle and techno to resonate within the desert space. Adding to the international low frequencies is techno traveller Knobs, whose organic and mystical atmospheres fittingly take inspiration from his environments. Knobs appreciates a
variety of musical styles, and underpins this diversity with prominent drive and rhythmical bass. Representing Australia in this scene is country Victorian producer Griff, whose shows offer a taste of ‘rhythmic enlightenment’ through their exploration of the wonder of electronic music. Melbourne-based DJ DinoBitch is locked in for one of her distinctively playful, bass-driven sets primarily made up of warped tech house, house and techno, but expect a ghetto twist and a healthy smattering of filth to activate the booty chakra. Kodiak Kid will be flying in with his
fearless array of genres from hip-hop to mid-tempo and Drum & Bass blending in an effortless harmony with styles like experimental downtempo and soulful roots to craft his signature immersive journey and experience that is shared by both the artist and audience. Boss bass lady Wonqi Rose also hails from Melbourne town. Massively influenced by Hip Hop, urban style and that mad underground gangsta flavour, Wonqi takes this and fuses it with a dash of the deep and dark, yet holds it all together with the most beautiful and eclectic of sounds. Stepping up with the mic to bring the conscious booty vibrations is Miss Moneytoast, whose recent shows have been hailed as party highlights. Expect effortless stage presence with relaxed, comical vibes from Average Rap Band, direct from NZ via the streets of Melbourne to deliver their irresistible lyrical-vocal harmonies and smooth beats. The Cutlery DJs return with their iconic WOS Vinyl Pool Party. Constantly pushing new sounds and playing great parties around the Northern Territory, Cutlery deliver a drawer-full of Deep House, Techno, Afro and Disco music. Bumble will be buzzing in to weave his sonically diverse, bass wobbling, Glitchy creations. The unifying theme of his music reflect nature, experience, perception and aspires to spark connection. Finally, Jeremy Conlon of Cooperblack, will be outputting “desert Electro-Pop”, if that’s even a thing. Despite its diverse lineup, the festival is still an intimate affair, run by an independent team of locals, who are committed to keeping it real through quality entertainment and bringing people together. With 1,600 people at the 2016 event, and plenty of magic brewing, 2017 is looking to be the freshest WOS yet. Get your tickets at

WELCOME TO THE ZOO WITHOUT FENCES Often referred to as a zoo without fences, Kangaroo Island is where you’ll find an abundance of native Australian wildlife. From swimming with dolphins off the Island’s shores to walking amongst the residents of the aptly named ‘Seal Bay’ there’s many reasons that make KI the Noah’s Ark of South Australia.
Kangaroo Island (or KI as the locals call it) presents the perfect setting to view loads of wildlife with the backdrop of a natural setting. From craggy rocks to sprawling sands and thick bushland you never know what you might find rustling around. One of the best places to start your KI safari is the Flinders Chase National Park. Flinders Chase is located at the western end of Kangaroo Island and one of Australia’s largest national parks covering 74,000 hectares of untouched bushland. The park is home to a variety of fauna, including the unique Kangaroo Island kangaroo (yes they are different to the kangaroos on the mainland!), koalas, Tammar wallabies, echidnas, the endangered Cape Barren Geese and even platypus. Of courses, there’s also the aforementioned Seal Bay where you’ll spot Australian Sea Lions as well as Australian fur seals as they lounge around on the sand. A great way to experience all of these wonderful (and sometimes weird) Australian animals is on board a Kangaroo Island Adventure Tour. With a variety of tour packages available you can choose one to suit your time and budget requirements. Kangaroo Island Adventure Tours take you to the island’s best spots including Flinders Chase where you’ll visit the Remarkable Rocks, Admirals Arch and Seal Bay - perfect for getting your fill of seals!
There’s also more animal action at Rob’s Sheep Shearing where you can learn about the sheep shearing industry on Kangaroo Island as well as witnessing some sheep shearing and wool spinning, first hand. If koalas are the creature that enticed you to Australian shores then you’ll be able to find these at Hanson Bay Koala Sanctuary on the Island. The great thing is Kangaroo Island Adventure Tours guides are all locals who know the island like the back of their hand so you’ll be sure not to miss a thing whilst visiting. Whilst you will see all the major highlights on a Kangaroo Island
Adventure Tour you will also go a little bit off-the-beaten track to places that not every tourist gets the chance to see, so you won’t go home with the same holiday snaps as everyone else! Courtesy coach pick-ups are included in Adelaide from selected hostels and hotels to get you to the Adelaide Central Bus Station to join the bus transfer to the ferry. The two-day tour operates Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays from September to October, Wednesdays and Saturdays from May to August , increasing to four days a week in April and November and then daily from December to March.
TRAVELLER TIP:
Kangaroo Island Adventure Tours’ 2 day tour is currently just $445 per person. Tour includes all entry fees to KI’s attractions, all meals, Rob’s Sheep Shearing and Sheepdogs, Emu Ridge Eucalyptus Distillery, Seal Bay, Little Sahara, Vivonne Bay, Hanson Bay Wildlife Sanctuary, Remarkable Rocks and Admirals Arch inside Flinders Chase National Park. www.kiadventuretours.com.au
ISLAND LIFE
Nothing screams Aussie adventure more than the thought of spending a few days castaway on a desert island, but when we say desert island we actually mean the world’s largest sand island. Fraser Island is situated off the coast of Queensland across the waters of Hervey Bay, north of the Sunshine Coast. Fraser Island boasts one of the longest beaches in the world, Seventy-Five Mile Beach as well as some stunning lakes such as Lake McKenzie and Lake Wabby. Away from the water you’ll also find stunning, ancient and towering rainforests that will leave you breathless in awe of their lush and peacefulness. Whilst visiting Fraser Island you can embark on a real adventure as you explore via 4WD, cruising along the sandy beaches or overlanding through the bumpy terrain of the forests. Camping under the stars and feasting on a proper Aussie BBQ whilst you take in the tranquility of the place which will leave you with memories to last a lifetime. You can cool off during the day with a dip in Lake McKenzie as you peer through its crystal clear waters, or soothe your aches with a visit to the Champagne Pools - a natural jaccuzzi created by waves crashing into the rock pools!
Fraser Island also plays host to dingos that you’ll often see on the beaches, as well as being a great place for whale-spotting. Hervey Bay is known as the Whale Watching Capital of the World, and between August and October each year, you are more than likely to spot a migrating mother and calf Humpback or two as they pass through the calm and warm waters close to the Island.
It’s on Fraser that you’ll also find the decaying and eerily stunning Maheno Wreck - a shipwreck that has been on the beach since it was washed ashore by a cyclone in 1935. If you’re looking for adventure during your East Coast travels, then it certainly starts on Fraser Island.

VISIT THE GREAT BARRIER REEF BEFORE IT’S TOO LATE Although it was stated in 2014 that the Great Barrier Reef was disappearing due to bleaching, it seems as though shock and horror has now set in that the earth’s largest living structure may well be gone within the next two decades.
Due to the current El Niño effect, higher water temperatures and climates are ravaging the Great Barrier Reef leaving it pallid and discoloured. What was once one of the most vibrant and colourful displays of marine life on the entire planet is now being wiped out by this destructive natural event. It was reported in August 2016 by Climate Home that 69% of visitors to the Great Barrier Reef were motivated to make the journey due to the fear of never getting another chance to. Having narrowly escaped the Endangered list back in 2016,
however it’s believed that the United Nations World Heritage Committee and UNESCO may list the Reef as ‘in danger’ following meetings this year regarding the mass bleaching. Between February and March last year, sea temperatures were at least 1 celsius above average causing the coral to be stressed and release the colourful algae that sustains it. This in turn resulted in 67% of a 700 kilometre stretch of the Reef in the north has now perished due to the major bleaching event. The bleaching that has occurred is most severe in the northern stretches of the 2,300
kilometer structure, with only 1% of the southern parts of the Reef affected by bleaching, meaning you can still see the vibrant corals and their tropical residents off the shores of popular destinations such as Airlie Beach and the Whitsunday Islands. The worry for the future of the Great Barrier Reef does not solely lie with the corals, but also with the marine life that live around the Reef. With the area being home to six of the world’s seven species of endangered marine turtle, as well as 10% of the world’s entire fish species and 30 species of whale, dolphin and porpoise. It is
believed that climate change due to carbon emissions is a major factor of the rise in temperatures, however the Australian Government have put a 2050 conservation plan in place to help reduce the destruction of the Great Barrier Reef - although this is slightly contradicted by their efforts to support the growing coal industry. For now the future of the 18 million year old reef hangs in the balance, so make sure you don’t leave it too late to visit this world wonder…

DANIEL SLOSS The surly, Scottish King of Comedy, Daniel Sloss is back on Australian shores for two months with appearances at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival and Sydney Comedy festival. Here, we catch up with Daniel before he jets from New York to Australia bringing just his dark sense of humour. Hi Daniel. How are you? I’m doing good. How are you? I’m alright. Friday night nearly. Is it? It’s Friday morning here. Or afternoon. How’s the weather in New York? It’s actually not bad. It was absolutely f**king freezing, the sort of temperature where I lost my sense of humour. But it seems pretty sunny today. Did you see what happened to us in the UK? Oh, yeah. Yeah. Storm Doris. It’s always such shit fucking names. I do miss the good old Scottish Hurricane Bawbag. That always made me laugh. So, you’ve been doing quite a lot of stuff in America though, over the last year, haven’t you? Yeah, we’re doing a couple more spots around the clubs, breaking into New York. I was here a couple of years ago, and doing the TV over there and stuff. Which is good. It’s kind of like starting again but not really. You know like start from the ground up, which would’ve been something I would’ve begrudged. The last time we spoke, last year, you were working on a pilot with Warner Brothers. How’s that all going? We pitched it and it didn’t get picked up.
So basically, we’ve gone on to other ideas with them because Conan has always been very supportive. I never understand the politics of what’s going on. Just turn up to meetings and then try and talk, rein in my swearing and see what happens. But apparently, it all went well but not well enough. Well, keep on trying. The Conan stuff, it looks like that’s going well. Well, look, my heart belongs to standup anyway. Taking from other people’s reactions, I should be more upset about things. But, I mean, I’m in New York again, at the fucking Comedy Cellar all week, doing my own show in Soho and then I’m off to Australia for two months. It’s very hard to be miserable when that’s happening. Exactly. Are you going to be adapting the Soho show at all for the Aussies? No, fuck no. My comedy is universal. I’m really reluctant to change anything. That’s the whole thing about comedy. You think something’s funny in your head, you tell it on stage in Scotland and you’re like ‘oh, that’s good. It’s funny, yeah.’ And then you get to London, you do it all there and that’s fine. And then you do Europe and you’re like ‘oh, good it’s still funny.’ And then America and Australia. And me, I’m not a political person. So, it’s not local references. I always say my comedy is relatable because it’s about how much of a c*nt I am, unfortunately. I’m a c*nt everywhere. I saw you were saying it was themed around having dark thoughts. I want to ask you, what’s the darkest thought you’ve had this week? Unprintable. Yeah, it’s hard. Yeah, the dark thoughts, it’s just that nobody else is honest about what goes on in their
fucking head. People always assume that your thoughts portray intentions. They clearly don’t know the difference between fantasy and realism. Like, I’m not an idiot. I’m not going to do anything that crosses my mind. But also, I’m not going to pretend that occasionally, shitty thoughts cross my mind. And it’s about just getting people to admit that. Because it doesn’t make you a bad person but we vilify people so quickly nowadays, where they’ve done little things, that I think we’re destroying honesty. Nobody’s pure of heart. Absolutely nobody is. And anyone who’s claiming to be pure of heart is probably the worst person on the fucking planet because they’re hiding shit. You’re going over for two months. You’ve got a couple of gaps inbetween your shows. What are you going to get up to in-between the shows? I’ve got a wedding in Byron Bay. My mate’s getting married so, I’m going to
go up there. It’s weird because my show this year is about break-ups. So I will have caused four couples to break-up so far and then I’m going to a wedding. How could you make them break-up? I mean, I could. But I won’t. I don’t break-up true love. I believe this one is true love. From the bottom of my heart, I believe that 80% of relationships are utter, utter, utter fucking horseshit. You’ve been going to Australia for ages now. Yes, since I was about 19. So, have you got any favourite spots you like to hit up while you’re over there? Just wherever my mates are. I love the Australian comedy scene so much just because the talent on it right now is phenomenal. Like, Demi Lardner, Nick Cody, Rhys Nicholson, Becky Lucas, Bart Freebairn… it’s just such a good comedy scene and they’re so fun to fucking hang out with. I’m not a tourist in any way, shape or form. I’ve been to New
York twice, I’ve never seen the Statue of Liberty. Because if I wanted to see the Statue of Liberty, I’d fucking Google it. I know what it looks like. I’ve never understood tourism. But what I do like about other places is the comedy clubs and the people there. That, to me, is what a place is. It’s not what surrounds it, it’s what inhabits it. You did the Melbourne one last year, that was your first Melbourne, wasn’t it? Yeah. How was that? It was great, really good. I’d wanted to do it for years and then to finally get to do it successfully, it was fucking great and I wanted to come back. I needed to give them a reason to want me back. Yeah, just genuinely thrilled to be coming back with a new show and break-up way more couples.
Who are your comedy heroes? Who made you want to be become a standup? When I was younger, the person that made me want to get into stand-up was Bill Burr, who just loves the stand-up so much. I just thought he was really intelligent and incredibly silly. I like funny rants. I think comedy should be funny, but I also like when it makes you think. I like going to see a show when afterwards, you leave and you’re talking about what was on. If comedy challenges your opinion but not in a way that upsets you, but just makes you think about it, it’s a great thing. Which is the same reason why enjoy Bill Burr. I love Bill Burr. I don’t agree with a lot of what he says but I like the way his mind works. I think he’s one of the best. Catch Daniel Sloss at various venues across Australia from March to May. DISCOVERY RECOMMENDS BARTRONICA
If you’re planning on a night out in the famous laneways, then you’re not going to want to miss the crème de la crème when it comes to the best that this fine city has to offer... But where to find such places, you might be wondering? Especially as Melbourne’s most unique venues also tend to be their most inconspicuous too. Yes, Australia’s culture capital sure does love its secret bars, and this one in particular would be fairly easy to pass by, should you not be too familiar with this labyrinth-like district. But at just a five to ten minute walk from the iconic Flinders Street station, the retro themed Bartonica could be one of the easiest of the laneway bars to find, as well as one of its quirkiest.
As you head down the stairs of this cosy, basement bar, we wouldn’t be surprised if you were slightly taken aback moment you set foot inside. As the subtle, understated entrance makes way for a vibrant and colourful array of 80s arcade and pinball machines, original games consoles and a full on racing car simulator - undoubtedly, a true Aladdin’s cave for any video game enthusiast. But even if don’t know your Mario from your Luigi, don’t despair as with its delectable cocktail menu and a welcoming and friendly atmosphere to match, you’d be hard pressed not having an entertaining night revisiting memory lane and enjoying a game or two from your childhood regardless. Try your
hand again at the classic likes of Space Invaders, Pac-Man, Sonic, NBA Jam and Donkey Kong, or perhaps battle it out amongst friends with a tournament of Mario Kart, Mortal Kombat or Streetfighter.

And if all the competitiveness of the night works up a bit of a thirst, you can always take a break from the rivalry with a drink at Pixel Alley. The fully stocked and aptly named bar area has a wide variety of craft beers, ciders and house spirits to choose from, as well as a rather creative and inventive list of cocktails.

THIS IS ULURU: AT AUSTRALIA’S RED CENTRE
Explore Australia’s Red Centre with a primer on all things Uluru. I was a kid the first time I heard of Uluru, watching Meryl Streep in the 1988 film A Cry in the Dark. They called it Ayers Rock and it looked positively imposing—a smooth, long, low mountain rising out of the desert. It seemed foreign to me and very far away. I had no idea about the significance of this place, or of the culture that lives near and around it. They’re called the Anangu, and to them, this is Uluru. This place is one of Australia’s most recognizable icons. Brilliant red and surrounded by the flatlands of the Central Australian desert, Uluru draws 250,000 people yearly, to see it at dusk and sometimes at dawn. People come here to see the colours of sunlight that reflect off its surface, and simply to be in the company of its light and its shadow. If you haven’t been to Uluru, I’ll wager it’s larger than you think it is, (but only if you haven’t been here). It rises 348m (1,142 ft.) above the plain that surrounds it, which is 50m (164 ft.) higher than the Eiffel Tower. Most of Uluru is beneath ground level, similar to how most of an iceberg is concealed beneath the water’s surface. What we see is, staggeringly, just the tip of Uluru. Formally called an inselberg, (“island mountain”), Uluru was created up to 550 million years ago from individual sedimentary grains of sand being compressed into rock and much later pushed upward during a shifting of plates. Archaeological findings tell us Aboriginal people settled here over 30,000 years ago. It wasn’t until 1873 that the explorer William Gosse saw Uluru and named
IMAGES COURTESY OF TOURISM NT
it Ayers Rock after South Australia’s Chief Secretary, Sir Henry Ayers. Then in 1985, the Australian government awarded ownership back to the Anangu people on the condition that they lease the land to Australia for 99 years. The government then formed Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park—a vast public area that encompasses Uluru and another inselberg named Kata Tjuta, which at 546m (1,791 ft.) is nearly as high as Toronto’s CN Tower. Since the 1950s when tourism started to take off, visitors to Uluru have loved climbing it—and who wouldn’t want to stand at the top, feel the hot desert wind and see the plains stretching out below you in a cinematic moment? Climbing Uluru however, while not outlawed, is discouraged by the Anangu. This is partly due to the fact that the climbing path crosses a highly sacred Anangu dreamtime track – a spiritual place beyond time and our physical world
where the past, present, and future all exist at once. The Australian government has vowed to outlaw the climbing of Uluru, but no action has yet been taken. Like all parts of the world, there are lots of ways to experience Uluru, and like all parts of the world, one of the best things you can do is Google it. Learn something about the history and culture of a place you’re visiting ahead of time. It will prevent you from arriving at the base of Ayers Rock “from the Meryl Streep movie,” asking when the climbing expedition starts.
Getting There G Adventures runs a number of departures Down Under encompassing a wide range of departure dates and activities to cater for different tastes. Find out more at www.gadventures.com.au
ROCK OUT IN THE NT
Australia’s Northern Territory is world famous for it’s epic rock formations, and no pilgrimage to Australia is complete without visiting possibly the most famous rock on Earth, Uluru. But it’s not just Uluru that takes first place in the Northern Territory. It’s in this wild northern state that you’ll also find the equally impressive Devils Marbles and The Olgas. Not heard of these rocky rivals to the great red rock? Well here’s a little info on how best to explore the area.
Embarking on Mulgas Adventures Alice Springs to The Rock tour will take you on an epic discovery of these geological marvels. Setting off at 6am you’ll be picked up and taken to the Cultural Centre where you will learn about the Aboriginal heritage and culture of Australia’s Red Centre. After this you will have the chance to walk around the enormous monolith, and enjoy a glass of bubbly as you take in the
crimson glow of Uluru at sunset. After a night’s camping under the stars, you’ll awake to get a full view of Uluru at sunrise when the rock awakens again to an illuminating glow from the blinding Aussie sun. From here it’s off to Kata Tjuta, also known as The Olgas. The Olgas are a group of large domed rocks 365 km southwest of Alice Springs. You will then visit Kings Creek
Station where you’ll enjoy a proper Outback BBQ. Whilst in the area you will also embark on the Kings Canyon rim walk and then enjoy a free camel ride! Heading back to Alice Springs overnight you’ll set off at 5am to the Devils Marbles. Also known as Karlu Karlu, these great round boulders litter the landscape in an otherworldly fashion. Whilst here you’ll have time to walk around the large rocks
and learn about the Aboriginal Dreamtime and religious significance of the area to the Aboriginal people. On the last day of the tour it’s time for a little relaxation as you visit the Mataranka Thermal Springs for a soothing dip and also the stunning Edith Falls where you can have one last refreshing swim before arriving back in Darwin.

TAKE AN NT WILDLIFE SAFARI
PLANNING AN ADVENTURE UP NORTH? KAKADU IS WHERE YOU’LL FIND IT BY THE BUCKETFULL.
A dense 20,000 square kilometres, Kakadu is nearly the size of Switzerland, if you’d like to try and get your head around that one! So it comes as no surprise that this biodiverse Australian National Park is home to over 2000 plant species and an enormous plethora of wildlife. If you’re thinking about embarking on an adventure tour in the Northern Territory you’ll need to keep an eye out for these creatures and yes they’re both very big and also quite small! CROCODILES There are roughly 10,000 crocodiles residing within Kakadu National Park… pretty scary, but if you leave them alone, they’ll leave you alone. There are both saltwater crocs that can grow up to a whopping 6 metres long, but there’s also fresh water crocs which are around 3 metres long. The best time of year to spot crocs is during the dry season as they concentrate in the shallow waters. Look out for them in the waterways and watering holes, and remember if there’s water there is probably a croc so take heed of the warning signs if you fancy a dip! BROLGAS Look out for this large grey crane during May to October as they flock in their hundreds on the grasslands near Mamukala Wetlands. This tall bird (100-125cm) is known for its energetic jumping and trumpeting during mating season.
FRILL NECKED LIZARDS One of Australia’s most iconic inhabitants - after the kangaroo and koala of course - is the Frill Necked Lizard. These 90cm long reptiles are pretty funny to see running along, but you’ll soon be impressed as they display their enormous ruff around their neck if they feel threatened. So keep the giggling to a minimum if you see one of these proud reptiles along your travels. SHORT-EARED ROCK WALLABY One of Kakadu’s cutest inhabitants, make sure you look out for the ShortEared Rock Wallaby whilst visiting the park. You’ll find this marsupial amongst rocky hills and gorges and is a grey/brown in its appearance. FLATBACK TURTLES You’ll find these little turtles at Gardangarl (also known as Field Island) at the mouth of the South Alligator River where Kakadu meets the sea. Catch a glimpse of the turtles from November to February when they climb upon shore to lay their clutches, each holiday over 50 eggs each! TRAVELLERS TIP: KAKADU WILD EXPEDITIONS HAVE TOURS DEPARTING FROM MARCH OCTOBER FROM 3-5 DAYS. www.kakaduwild.com.au

FROM THE ROCK TO THE REEF
Explore Australia from the inside out with Adventure Tours Australia’s Rock to Reef Tour. With Australia being one of the largest countries on earth, it may come as no surprise that the terrain can vary greatly. From the dusty, arid Red Centre to the lush tropical rainforests of Queensland, Adventure Tours’ Rock To Reef Overland tour will take you on one heck of a journey through some of Australia’s most wild and untamed territory. AUSTRALIA’S RED CENTRE Your adventure starts in Alice Springs where you’ll have the pleasure of visiting the stunning Uluru as well as Kata Tjuta (formerly known as The Olgas). This leg of the tour will enable you to see the rusty Red Centre in all its dramatic glory whilst you get to know your fellow tour mates who you’ll be sharing your epic journey with. ABORIGINAL CULTURE Whilst visiting the Red Centre you will learn about the land and the local
Mala people by taking an interpretive walk with an Aboriginal guide who will provide information on the most ancient culture on Earth. After this you will also have the chance to purchase some genuine Aboriginal arts and crafts at the Cultural Centre before camping overnight in the Watarrka National Park. But don’t stock up with too much, as this is just the beginning of your journey. KINGS CANYON Early the next morning you’ll be in prime position to explore Kings Canyon. Through a 6km hike through the Canyon you’ll discover the Lost City and the Garden Of Eden - epic names for some epic locations. Immersed in stunning scenery, you’ll want to take as many photos as possible so you have lasting memories of the epic landscape before returning to Alice Springs to embark on the next part of your journey.
GOING OFF GRID After a day of rest and recovery in Alice Springs it’s time to hit the dusty old road. And when we say dusty, we mean dusty! The road that takes you over the border from the Northern Territory to Queensland is mostly an actual dirt track and is one of the most remote routes in the entire world. After a long day’s driving (total of 9 hours) you’ll arrive in Boulia, Queensland. RAINFORESTS & WATERFALLS Driving from Boulia to Hughenden and on to Cairns, you’ll see the landscape transform from dry desert
to lush rainforests leaving your memories of the arid Red Centre far behind. As you make your way to Cairns you’ll have the chance to experience the lush rainforests. As we drive through the Atherton Tablelands we stop for a swim at Millstream Falls and then onto Porcupine Creek before arriving in Cairns where you can make your onward travel arrangements and perhaps explore the wonders of the Great Barrier Reef. Should you be starting your journey in Cairns this 7-day tour is also available in reverse. www.adventuretours.com.au
MEET THE NINGALOO REEF’S BIG 5
The Ningaloo Reef is one of the world’s most pristine marine eco-systems for snorkeling, diving and seeing incredible aquatic wildlife. This beautiful peripheral reef is one of the most easily accessible in the world. To get there, head to Coral Bay or Exmouth, which is a two-and-a-half-hour flight from Perth, or make the most of the West Coast by travelling the West Coast from Perth with Hop On Hop Off Pass. When you arrive in Coral Bay or Exmouth there are plenty of hostels that provide front door access to this underwater playground. At this UNESCO World Heritage Site, you’ll have the opportunity to see some impressive giants of the ocean and tick them off your bucket list! The Ningaloo Reef is home to impressive wildlife as well as seasonal marine visitors as they make their way through the Indian Ocean. Here’s the big 5 to look out for whilst visiting the Ningaloo Reef. HUMPBACK WHALES
Between June and October/November, enormous humpback whales make their annual migration back to Antarctica via the coasts of Australia. You may be able to spot them from the shores of Exmouth, but for a closer encounter, there are whale watching tours available from Coral Bay and Exmouth.
MANTA RAYS
DUGONGS
One of the main natural attractions of this area are the graceful manta rays, which can be found in the waters surrounding the Ningaloo Reef all year round. However, they are more concentrated in numbers, and more willing to engage with snorkelers and divers from mid-May to midSeptember. It’s possible to book tours specifically designed to swim or dive with the manta rays, so don’t miss out on meeting these graceful and otherworldly giants of the deep during your visit to the Ningaloo Reef.
Ningaloo has a healthy population of dugongs, which can be found at any time of year. This strange looking creature is an herbivore and closely related to the manatee. They are classified as having an extremely vulnerable extinction risk and the Ningaloo Reef is one of the only places in the world to see them. Encountering a dugong is quite special, as they are extremely shy and elusive creatures.
WHALE SHARKS
The whale shark is the world’s largest fish, and Ningaloo Reef is one of the only places in the world where they can be observed in coastal waters. They feed in this area from March to August/September and it’s an unbelievable experience to come face-to-face with these incredibly huge creatures. Think we’re exaggerating? Whale Sharks on average measure at around 32 feet, however the largest ever recorded was 40 feet long!
LOGGERHEAD TURTLES
This gorgeous and vulnerable turtle is an endangered species which is currently protected by the Wildlife Conservation Act. They can be found nesting in the Muiron Islands, near the Ningaloo Marine Park, from October to early March. Hatchlings appear from December to April. It’s best to contact the Ningaloo Turtle Program to ensure viewing them responsibly.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT WORKING IN AUSTRALIA Australia is one of the top travel destinations in the world, but it’s also full of employment opportunities. With a thriving economy, high demand for skilled workers and desirable work-life balance, it’s no wonder thousands of people every year apply to work Down Under. See what your chances are with our quick guide to working in Australia.
Visas
There are a number of work visas that permit you to work in Australia from one day to retirement. Temporary visas include the Working Holiday Visa (subclass 417), a one-year visa that allows you to work for any one employer for up to six months while having a holiday in Australia. For something a little longer term, the Temporary Work (Skilled) Visa (subclass 457) is an employer-sponsored visa valid for up to four years. Permanent work visas that will allow you to stay in Australia indefinitely include the Skilled Independent Visa (subclass 189) and Employer Nomination Scheme Visa (subclass 186). There are also business visas available for if you’re planning on relocating your current business or starting a new business in Australia.
Skilled Occupation Lists
In many cases, work visas are for skilled individuals only, particularly permanent visas. The occupations that have a high demand for skilled workers can be found on the Skilled Occupation Lists. You must nominate an occupation on the
list in order to be considered and you must be able to provide evidence that you have skills and experience in your chosen occupation. Occupations currently on the Skilled Occupation Lists include Electrical Engineer, Secondary School Teacher, Midwife, Bricklayer, Carpenter, Dental Hygienist and Chef (excluding fast food/ takeaway).
Booming Business
Australia has one of the healthiest economies going with low unemployment and high wages. As a result, living in Australia is considered to be more expensive than the UK, but it’s all relative: high wages, high prices. Industries that are evergrowing in Australia include healthcare, I.T, trades and construction.
Skills Shortage
When employers can’t find permanent residents or citizens qualified enough to fill a job position, they can look overseas and sponsor someone to move to Australia and work for them. Australia is currently experiencing a skills shortage, resulting in a high demand for skilled individuals. If you have the skills that Australia needs, you could be ending 2016 with a new life in Australia…

WHAT TO LOOK FORWARD TO WHEN MOVING FROM THE UK TO AUSTRALIA
If you’re starting a new chapter in Oz, you may find several negative voices in your head making a case for staying home in good old Blighty. Whichever way you dress it up, moving halfway across the world is a big deal. So we thought it would be a nice idea if we put together a series of wholly optimistic factoids to help put your mind at rest.
Many Australians are drawn to the sea which has inevitably led to Australia becoming a nation of swimmers. Everyone can swim. Most of them could swim for their country. And those that do swim for their country are superhuman fish-like hybrids, though admittedly that is yet to be verified. And as a result of this aquatic love, Australia’s public pools are of the very highest standard.
Naturally there are many practical changes to take into consideration when adjusting to life in Australia such as buying a house, finding work and finding a school for your children, but there are just as many reassuring aspects of Australian life that will hopefully lower the stress levels a little.
A recent study showed six of the ten most affordable cities for public transport are in Australia, ahead of London, Berlin, Paris and New York: Music to your ears if you intend on being a city commuter.
Firstly, the Australian coastlines. If you’re moving somewhere close to the coast, you’re already winning.
It almost goes without saying but let us give you a quick heads-up as to the weather situation: It’s still really hot. Like, unbearably hot, a lot of the time. Now if you’ve been away living somewhere not as hot, like, say
Europe or the Sun, it will take a little time for you to adjust and adapt your wardrobe accordingly. But adjust and adapt you will! Australia is the world leader when it comes to looking after the working man and woman. The minimum wage in Australia is currently $17.70AUD per hour. That’s pretty good news, not just because it’s so generous but because it demonstrates that when it comes to workers’ rights and working conditions in general, Australia can’t be beaten. Aussies are social animals who love to talk, make friends and help out where possible. It’s not a trait you
find everywhere in the world and returning to this land of affability will come as a bit of a culture shock. But if you’re here to stay, you’ll soon be instigating random conversations at the ATM queue with the best of them. So there you go. Just five examples of how your trip to Australia will feel a little more comforting. And for extra security and reassurance, don’t forget to talk to Seven Seas Worldwide about reliable and affordable door-to-door relocation. Oh and check out our MoveCube service, it’s a revolutionary approach to house removals! www.sevenseasworldwide.com.au

HOW TO AVOID STUFFING UP AN INTERVIEW Interviewing with a recruiter is in some ways more difficult than interviewing with a hiring manager. You rarely know what the job entails, you’re unable to research the company. Usually a recruiter is the gatekeeper, between you and getting anywhere in your job search. It is however quite easy to enjoy the interview experience, through some thought about what you wear, what you say, and how you say it. Below are some tips of what to avoid when heading in for an interview with a recruitment consultant.
ATTIRE - DRESS TO IMPRESS Recently I met a candidate arrive in a Batman t-shirt and denim shorts. Even if the role might be with a creative agency, we need to know you take your job search seriously – and wearing a suit is an indicator of that.
TALKING TOO MUCH OR TOO LITTLE As recruiters, we go on and on about the SAO (or STAR) method of answering questions. Your ability to verbally
demonstrate your experience without waffling is vital; however it’s equally important to keep the conversation flowing. Having a stop-start questionanswer interview is also difficult, as it’s harder to build rapport.
TIMELINESS & FLAKINES Being late, not returning calls, and not attending interviews are the biggest no-nos in the recruitment industry. As recruiters, we’ve heard every excuse which exists and it really sours first impressions. If you no longer want to attend an interview, or you’re no longer interested, please just let us know! We don’t mind and we will call you with more relevant opportunities in the future. There’s lots of tips on how to ace an interview, but if you avoid the above, you’ll do better than most. Good luck! NURSING IN MELBOURNE: THE FACTS If you’re considering a working holiday, and you are already a Registered Nurse, then Australia could provide you with a number of exciting opportunities. As one of Australia’s major cities, nurses are highly in demand in Melbourne. There is work in a range of specialities, across both private and public sector healthcare organisations. What is it like to work as a nurse in Melbourne? Compared to the UK, you’ll notice a number of similarities to working practices, particularly when it comes to policy and procedures; however the working conditions for nurses are of a particularly high standard in Melbourne. Patient-nurse ratios are around 4:1, enabling you to concentrate on providing a high quality of care and attention. By signing up to a nursing agency in Melbourne, you are sure to find a range of varied and interesting roles to suit your qualifications and experience, whether you are looking to work in a hospital or in a care setting. Many overseas nurses find themselves based in the large teaching facilities in the city; however there are plenty of opportunities, which arise in the smaller facilities as well as aged care units.
supplement your income whilst you travel around the country. The visa allows you to travel around Australia whilst finding work. Your visa will not automatically entitle you to obtain work as a nurse in Australia – you will need to register separately for this – see below. Registering as a nurse in Australia Just as you would with the NMC in the UK, you’ll need to register with the ANMC, the Australian equivalent, in Melbourne. The process can take a number of weeks to complete, so it’s advisable to complete your application before you travel, as you won’t be able to enter employment as a nurse without this.
How do I get a visa?
If you completed your training in the UK, you may be eligible for direct entry onto the register. If there are any issues with your registration, you may need to undertake some additional training in order to be accepted onto the register.
If you are planning on coming to Melbourne on a working holiday, then you’ll need to apply for a Working Holiday Visa. This is suitable if you are aged between 18-30 (the upper age limit rises to 35 in 2017) and is an ideal way to
An important element of the criteria is the ability to be proficient in the English language. If English is not your first language, it may be necessary to complete a test in order to prove your proficiency.
