FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE July 7, 2014

Police program helps local athletes Play It Forward Boynton Beach Police have pledged up to $15,000 to help fund athletic programs at Boynton Beach High School. But athletes will have to Play It Forward and give back to their community before the BBPD cuts a check. Here’s how it will work: Scholar athletes from BBHS will donate their time by volunteering for Habitat for Humanity of South Palm Beach County and the Boynton Beach Wildcat Program. The BBPD will make a contribution for each hour of work performed at a rate consistent with the athlete’s most recent GPA. For example, if an athlete with a 4.0 GPA volunteers one hour of his or her time, the BBPD will make a $4.00 contribution. Each student is responsible for maintaining a volunteer worksheet, accounting for their time and having a representative from Habitat or the Wildcats validate their service. BBHS will provide a quarterly accounting of the service performed by their athletes and a check for that amount (up to $15,000) will be presented to the school once approved by the City Commission. The BBPD is using seized assets through the Florida Contraband Forfeiture Act to fund this pilot program, which was the brainchild of Police Chief Jeffrey S. Katz. “Through this program, scholar athletes strive for success in the classroom and give of themselves in the community to help fund the school programs in which they participate,” Katz said. “They will be directly responsible for achieving greatness and bettering the City of Boynton Beach. Everyone wins.” PHOTO/STORY OPPORTUNITY: More than a dozen BBHS athletes will be volunteering for Habitat for Humanity of South Palm Beach County tomorrow morning. Media who wish to cover this are asked to meet PIO Slater at 110 N.W. 8th Avenue, Boynton Beach at 9:30 a.m. Please park in front of St. John’s Church on the corner of N.E. 7th Avenue and Seacrest Boulevard. Representatives from Habitat and BBHS will be available for interviews.
