Rhythm & Q’s BBQ • Lake City, South Carolina • SCBA Submitted by Tim Handy South Carolina BBQ Association

October 19, 2019 the Rhythm and Q’s BBQ took place in Lake City, SC. This first-year event drew 31 teams from across the Palmetto state all vying for big cash and prizes. With the construction of a new venue, public safety was paramount as teams adhered to strict code, security and fire department requirements. The public was treated to amazing live music during this festival. Local bands and high-profile music acts made the perfect accompaniment to the slow smoked BBQ goodness. On Saturday the threat of tropical rains could not put the fires out as teams were set to compete in several categories with the seasons biggest cash payouts. Taking top honors in Friday nights wing throw down was Pit Master Quentin Tedder of S’Low-

country Q. Walking the stage with a first-place rib score was Pit Master Gene Culbertson of Backwoods Bar-BQue. The first-place award for butts went to Pit Master Tesa Culbertson of K&T BBQ. Winner of the Showmanship award went to Sabrina Singletary of Smoke Central BBQ. The Christmas Season and a New year

Audrey Evans

Editor & Publisher acampbell@bqtimes.com

The time of year often leads to a point of reflection in your life. I don’t think that really matters at what season you are in, in your life either. It just happens. TO US ALL!. Sometimes its reflecting in the many ways our lives have changed in the last year, the people who are missing from our lives, or the new people in our lives. For some people it’s a new chal-

lenge to reflect back to the meaning of Christmas and re-evaluating their lives or the ways they celebrate Christmas. Then some look at it as a fresh start coming in the new year, its time to eat better, do better or start whatever new years resolution is in store for them. Last year was truly a point of reflection for me during this time. My mom was sick, very sick. I wasn’t even sure if I would ever have a Holiday season with her again. And I had a little girl on the way, that I wasn’t sure would get to meet her grandmother. I had some of the best support out of the BBQ world, any of us could ever imagine. I don’t think unless you have been in a situation yourself, where you have watched the BBQ Family step up to be there for you that you could truly understand what I mean by this. We all strive to be better people, to help those in need and to live our Christian lives the way the Lord would want us to. You just don’t always get that reciprocated back and I can tell you my BBQ family did just that. More than I ever expected or deserved. This year, my mom is in way better health than last year. She is still fighting cancer, I don’t know that, that journey will ever truly end. It’s always scary going back to doctors appointments and check ups. I know she is truly terrified of ever being in that position with treatments again. I ask that you all keep her in your prayers for her continued health and improvements and that she can beat this demon once again. This year, I have the most beautiful baby girl celebrating her first Christmas. I’m not sure if this year or next year will be the big treat for her, but I’m trying to make the best out of it. I never expected to sit where I sit to-

day, I never expected to be a single mom, I never expected to have to walk the journey I am on. I never expected to watch what I truly thought was my family walk out the door; but I’ve learned it’s only made me stronger. I’m not healed, I’m not ready to move on to new depths of life but I’m learning to take in the moments God is giving me at the time. This year its not about the presents, the rush to make sure everyone has what I think they need under the tree. It’s truly so much more to me. It’s about the blessings God gives us Every day that we celebrate His birth on Christmas morning. It’s about having my family with me to celebrate the great Savior who has kept my head up through this journey and the struggles, the one who is showing me there is so much more to life. Giving me the ability to give in my lowest times, because I would rather see happiness on someone else’s face than think they could possibly be dealing with struggles inside like I have. I do not have a clue what the new year holds for me. I don’t have any fancy resolutions. I don’t have any big wishes. I’m praying for healing and new directions. I’m praying my mom will continue to improve on her health and the rest of my family and friends will keep their health. I’m praying for a fresh start in a lot of ways; but I truly don’t know what direction my life will spin. No differently than where I sat last year. It’s not my plan that matters, it’s not my timing that matters. It reminds me of an old saying, “If you wanna hear God laugh, tell him your plans.” We don’t truly get to plan our lives or what is going to happen in them. We just have to accept what happens, find a way to trudge on and keep finding faith in the days ahead.

Let’s Light The Smokers in 2020!

Dana Hillis

Columnist Pitmaster, Big Papa’s Country kitchen

Down in Naples Florida we are doing our share to keep a good bit of hickory smoke in the air and we plan to keep the wonderful BBQ smoke rolling for the new year! Several people I know are cooking on pellet cookers and several have pellet cookers on their Christmas list. My good friends Danny and Nicky got a green mountain Davy Crockett edition and take it with them on all their trips. They bought a big tool box that the cooker fits in perfectly and when they pull it out to cook it fits perfectly on top at the right height and works out awesome. We cooked a steak contest in Lake Wales on our way to a wedding in Daytona Beach. I cooked my steak turned it in and cleaned up and left before awards. We were almost to Daytona when my good friends Rick, Tony and John sent me a picture of my 7th place metal and some cash. I think I am luckier when I leave. This is the Second time I left before awards for a wedding and the Second time I got a top 10 call! We got to Daytona and enjoyed being with my great friends Wendy and Rich Eames to celebrate the wedding of their son Shaun to his lovely bride Kristina. Shaun is a BBQ guy and is part of the team the Flying Pig Duckers. Shaun has married an absolutely beautiful bride and when her sister made a toast she men-

tioned that Kristina was marrying Shaun for several reasons including being a “great BBQ cook”. I want all you single guys out there to take notice that if you become a good BBQ cook it will help you land a nice wife! My son Cadin recently married a beautiful young lady and he is quite the cook and she plans to keep him around. My son Shane wears out his Davy Crockett and his Weber and his wife and 3 boys have never been happier! My son Vonn cooks on his ceramic grill every Saturday and says he is going to give me some lessons on ribs and chicken! He keeps up the great smoking and grilling it is just a matter of time before some good looking gal snatches him up to cook for her! If you want young people to succeed at whatever they do reward them with some ribs for achieving their goals. My grandson Koda wrestled his first tournament of the year and I told him if he won I would cook him a slab. He won. His younger brother Kael just turned 7 and is involved with a fitness program at his school. He goes in early almost everyday to exercise and it includes running. If he managed to accumulate 26 miles of running he would be invited to an awards ceremony. He was awarded his first gold medal for running a total of 35 miles. He just earned himself a slab of ribs. Kase is only 2 but his days of earning

ribs is getting close. These kids make me a proud papa. Everybody that cooks BBQ needs to get involved with cooking with kids. Brian and Dana Coleman have a cool little son named Graham that cooked in the kids q for his first time. He takes after his mom and dad cause he cooked an awesome steak and won first place! Thank you to the Lake Wales contest for getting kids a chance to cook. I talked to Jim Elser at the steak cooks meeting and asked him if he was cooking steak and he said no but he was helping a kid cook in the kids q. I thought that was awesome that a guy battling to win a BBQ contest would take the time out to help a kid and pass on some of that cooking knowledge. Good to see you Jim and good luck next year!

“He’s making a list, he’s checking it twice Gonna find out who’s naughty or nice Santa Claus is coming to town” Yep, its that time of year when the lists start coming out, even for the big man himself. Sometimes I’ll add something I’ve just completed just so I can strike a line through it, marking it complete. We all have our “Bucket Lists” which are continually added to, like hand gliding off Mt. AUDREY Continued From Page 4 Now, this is when I tell you that I’m not one to share my personal stories or business with people. I’ve always been preached to by my parents that it’s not appropriate. Don’t put your stuff out there on facebook or in the paper. But there is a reason I have shared all this with you. I’m not looking for a pitty party. I’m not looking for anyone to feel sorry for me. I’m not wanting any sympathy of the tough few years I’ve had. I have realized that there are way more people out there struggling with things than we ever realize. My generation is a different from those before me and truth be told I’m an old soul. There are alot of things I don’t agree with about my generation, social media, online dating, having phones non stop etcetera. But one thing I have noticed is the fact when it comes to the older generation of, “wipe your face, pull it together, save a little face, don’t air your laundry” now days there is so much of it that we paint nothing but a perfect little picture of our families and world where everything is hidden. You truly only see the best of everything which alot of times can make people feel inadequate. It makes people wonder if they are doing something wrong because they have arguments at home, their kids don’t always act perfect or they don’t have the perfect photos to share on social media. The thing is, every family has those moments. Every person has weaknesses and things they are dealing with. You truly never know what the person sitting next to you is dealing with because they may be scared to say so. They don’t want to look inadequate to your family with your perfect photos.
