CLUB MANAGER Happy December Everyone! We hope that you and your families had a great Thanksgiving and that everyone is staying safe and healthy. Every time I sit down to write these monthly updates, I can not believe how fast time has flown by. We are just a couple of weeks away from Christmas and 30 days away from 2022! That is crazy to think about. The golf course will be closing for the season on Sunday, December 5th. Craig and his agronomy team have some winter projects and preparations to get the course ready for the potentially harsh temperatures and snow for the next couple of months. These agronomic practices help us to protect the course so that we have good conditions once we reopen in March. We are working on finalizing the 2022 social calendar and are excited about the events for the upcoming season. We will be sending that calendar out at the beginning of January so everyone can start to save the dates for their favorite events. We are working to have a balanced calendar so that we have a little something for everyone! Our new Director of Fun, Brandon Kovshoff, is working hard to put together some great off-season activities for both adults and kids alike. Please check out the calendar that is located on the website and see if there is something you might enjoy attending. From trivia, movies, music, storytelling, painting, and art classes, we have a little bit of everything in the month of December. Please feel free to check it out. If you have not met Brandon yet, he definitely lives up to the billing of Director of Fun! While we are officially heading into the off-season, we will still be around to help with anything you might need. Don't forget to take advantage of the Troon Prive and Troon Advantage programs when you are traveling. You can visit www.troonprive.com to find courses where you might be heading and send in your requests for tee times. All club facilities, including pools, will be closing at 3:00pm on Friday, December 24th, and will reopen for normal hours of operation on Sunday, December 26th. Please let us know if there is anything we can do for you and thank you all for your support this past season. We are excited and looking forward to an amazing 2022! Happy Holidays and Merry Christmas to you and your families! Sincerely, Chris Thomas

membership As the year is winding down and we look ahead to the holiday season, there is much to be thankful for from the past couple of years at the Club. We have gained an entirely new perspective on the friendships and the bonds that have been made at the Club with respect to friends, family, and the ability to enjoy the many outdoor activities and social gatherings our Club provides. Not taking for granted the importance of our social connections at the Club, it was great to see the Fall Wine Dinner with the great turnout of Club Members and for Executive Chef Phil Flath to show off his talents and the talents of the culinary team behind the scenes. This popular event was missed in 2020 and was a welcomed return this past October. Also returning this season was a very well attended Thanksgiving Day Dinner at the Mansion, kicking off the holiday season! Throughout the holidays, our Activities Team will be hosting a series of crafts and events for the whole family to enjoy; please refer to the December Activities Schedule for happenings throughout the month. It is an exciting time of year, as we head into the New Year, I do wish to thank all of our Members who referred friends to the Club. Member’s referring friends is the best way to build the Club camaraderie and to provide opportunities for expanded social engagement and to make new connections. We continue to welcome new member referrals to the Club and please feel free to contact me at your convenience for assistance in welcoming your friends to the Club. Looking ahead to 2022, I believe we will see a much-expanded social calendar, welcoming back some of our most cherished events, such as the Clambakes and our weekly Friday Nights & Wine Down Wednesdays, as well as some added summer socials for all to enjoy. As always, we will adjust as needed for the safety and health of our Members, but certainly, plan on a robust 2022 calendar! Please be sure to welcome our newest members of the Club by clicking on the link below: https://www.oceanedgeclub.com/member-home/welcome-new-members Also, for anyone interested in being part of the new Ambassador Committee, please send me a note to learn more or to sign-up! We look forward to sharing all that Ocean Edge has to offer with our new members. Thank you for being a part of the Ocean Edge family and I look forward to seeing you around the Club! Sincerely, Michael Medeiros

FITNESS 10 tips to help prevent weight gain over the holiday season! Keep to your meal routine. Try to eat at roughly the same times each day. Go reduced-fat. Choose low-fat foods when possible. Walk off the weight. Aim for 10,000 steps each day. Pack a healthy snack. Choose fresh fruit or low-calorie yogurt instead of chocolate or chips. Look at the labels. Check food labels for fat and sugar content. Caution with your portions. Don’t heap food on your plate, and think twice before having second helpings. Up on your feet! Stand up for 10 minutes every hour. Think about your drinks. Choose water or calorie-free drinks, and limit alcohol. Focus on your food. Slow down, and don’t eat in front of the TV or on the go. Don’t forget your 5-a-day. Eat at least five servings of fruits and vegetables each day.

Friendly Reminder: There will be no Fitness Classes held from Friday, December 24th Monday, January 3rd. Happy Holidays! Heidi Vanamburgh

WELLNESS

Instead of loading up this comfort food side with tons of brown sugar and marshmallows, we have turned to sweet spices, vanilla, and inherently sweet dried fruit to enhance the natural sweetness of the sweet potatoes. A topping of pecans and pepitas replaces traditional marshmallow topping to keep it healthy and add texture and color for a beautiful casserole. Enjoy! - Heidi Vanamburgh

No Sugar Added Sweet Potatoe Casserole Prep: 15 minutes Total: 55 minutes

Ingredients:

7 cups cubed peeled sweet potatoes (2 pounds) ½ cup reduced-fat milk 5 tablespoons butter, melted, divided 1 teaspoon salt ½ teaspoon vanilla extract ½ teaspoon ground ginger ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon ¼ teaspoon ground pepper ½ cup chopped pecans ¼ cup pepitas ¼ cup chopped dried fruit, such as cherries, dates, raisins or currants

Directions:

Step 1: Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Step 2: Bring an inch or two of water to a boil in a large pot fitted with a steamer basket. Add sweet potatoes, cover and steam until very soft, 18 to 20 minutes. Remove the basket and discard water. Return sweet potatoes to the pot. Add milk, 4 tablespoons butter, salt, vanilla, ginger, cinnamon, and pepper; mash until desired consistency. Transfer to a 1 1/2-quart baking dish. Step 3: Stir pecans, pepitas, dried fruit, and the remaining 1 tablespoon butter together in a small bowl. Sprinkle over the top of the sweet potatoes. Step 4: Bake casserole until hot and the nuts are lightly toasted, 20 to 30 minutes. Tips: To make ahead: Prepare through Step 3 and refrigerate for up to 2 days.

AGRONOMY Our fall season on the golf course has been one of ups and downs that have coincided with the weather. While most of the fall weather has been warm and enjoyable, we have been dealt a few blows with storms moving through. The end of October brought us a tough nor’easter that caused extensive clean-up throughout the course. The Agronomy team worked extremely hard to clean up all debris and have the entire course re-opened in a few days. The more enjoyable weather provided us the ability to continue to build for the 2022 golf season by completing a few very important cultural practices to the golf course. Fairway and approaches were aerated and verticut. This process helps us remove thatch build-up as well as alleviate compaction from a busy 2021 golf season. We also worked on improving our soil pH. Creeping Bentgrass prefers soil pH in the range of 6.0-6.8. Our fairway soil reports came back with a pH on average of 5.2-5.5. This is much lower than the optimum range above. When soil pH ranges get more acidic it becomes harder for plants to take up vital nutrients as they become bound in the acidic soils. This inhibits the effectiveness of our fertilizer applications from being used most efficiently by the plant. In order to correct this, we did an application of dolomitic limestone to fairways. This will start to raise the pH of the soil to more acceptable levels. Sincerely, Craig Sullivan
