CLUB MANAGER Happy May, everyone! May is an exciting time of year as the weather starts to change and get warmer, flowers start blooming and things start picking up at the club. We can’t wait to see everyone back at the club this season and are looking forward to everyone returning soon. The golf course has been open for about a month now and I know many of you have been out to play. The weather has not been the best of conditions for growing right now, but the course is in good shape and has handled the winter pretty well. Once the nighttime temperatures start getting into the 50s, we should see a lot of pop from some of the areas that are still dormant. For those who have not seen the remodeled golf shop, you are in for a treat. It has received a lot of positive reviews so far and the golf merchandise looks great! We will be opening Fletcher outdoor pool and Arbor pool for Memorial Day weekend, the Members Sports Club pool and hot tub opened about 2 weeks ago. The pool is heated, but the weather has not been warm enough, however, we have seen a couple of members brave the elements to enjoy the pool and hot tub. We had a great turnout and received positive feedback from the April Member Welcome Back Mixer. The next Member Event is our 'Talk Derby to Me' on Saturday, May 7th for the Kentucky Derby! Please be sure to sign up for this great event, the deadline for registration is Wednesday, May 4th. Speaking of great events, it is also that time of year for our Member Happy Hour at the Linx beginning at the end of this month. More details to come! I want to take this time to thank the entire staff for all the hard work and effort they put in the off-season to get ready for the upcoming season and make improvements around the club. We hope that you enjoy the changes and hopefully, it improves the member experience. Thank you again for all your support. We truly appreciate all the members and how special they make Ocean Edge. Take care and hope to see you soon! Sincerely, Chris Thomas

advisory board Dear Ocean Edge Members, Happy May! Warmer days are on their way, although Mother Nature may have a trick or two up her sleeve. The Season at Ocean Edge is here – time for reconnection with old friends and time to make new friends and memories. The Advisory Board has been working with Ocean Edge management over the winter months to improve the member experience. Together, we have discussed members’ comments and suggestions, as well as the membership survey. As a result, management is aware of both its successes and areas that need improvement. I would like to take this opportunity to introduce the Advisory Board: Karen Lacouture (Chair), Jill Cosgrove (Vice-Chair), Ruth Grande (Golf Committee Chair), Candace White (Food & Beverage/Social Activities), Peter VanOot (Sports/Beach Chair), Art Zouharis (Communications Chair), Marguerite Duesel, Chris Scudellari, and Howard Curtin. Our role as the Advisory Board here at Ocean Edge is to be your voice to the management. In order to be most effective, we would appreciate it if you would voice any concerns, suggestions, observations, or opportunities for improvement to us. Any positive feedback, such as a great dining experience, outstanding service, or a unique family outing, is also most welcome. The Advisory Board meets monthly. We discuss members’ concerns and suggestions, opportunities and challenges, and success stories. In our role as Advisory Board, we can offer advice and suggestions about these concerns, but ultimately it is up to Ocean Edge management to make the final decision. The Advisory Board minutes are posted on the Ocean Edge Website. (Click “Club Resources” on the Website Home Page.) We look forward to seeing you out and about at Ocean Edge as we take advantage of our beautiful Club and all its amenities. Sincerely, Karen Lacouture

golf As Star Wars fans say, “May the 4th be with you”. Our force is strong at OE as we look to hold our OEWGA & OEMGA 1st events of the year. OEWGA’s “Welcome Back Coffee” on May 10th and the OEMGA’s first Dettore Quota Friday on May 13th. Our season will be underway and as Cape Cod’s unofficial Summer Opening Day is Memorial Day, we have a lot going on in May. OEWGA has its Opening Day Scramble and Luncheon on the 31st and the OEMGA Nahass Match Play Bracket will start on May 23rd. There is still time to sign-up for these events so do not delay sign-up today. Craig and the grounds crew have kept the course in great shape and as the weather starts to heat up so will the course conditions, we expect a great year! We look forward to seeing many members returning to the Cape in May and cannot wait to see you all again soon. Now is the time to take a lesson before the season starts and the side bets ensue. Let us know how we can help take your game to the next level. The golf staff is here to help. Give us a call at 774-323-6200 or drop us an email at shayne.sakson@oceanedge.com. Best Swings, Shayne Sakson Director of Golf

FITNESS Exercise = Priorities! There are many reasons to make exercise a priority. Exercise may be the closest thing to being the fountain of youth. Not only does regular activity strengthen your muscles, and improve heart and lung function, it can also reduce your risk of illness and disease, stimulate the growth of new brain cells, and add years to your life. The range of health bonuses attributed to exercise has been studied extensively. Studies show that it only takes 30 minutes on most days for physical activities. Workouts such as brisk walking or cycling boost the amount of oxygen consumed during exercise. Improving your aerobic capacity by just 15 to 25 percent would be like shaving 10 to 20 years off your age. Working out will keep you flexible, limber, and strong, and reduces infections. There’s no pill that can do all that! Make May your “I’m going to make my fitness a priority” month. You are worth it! Best, Heidi VanAmburgh

WELLNESS New Orleans BBQ Shrimp

There is nothing better than barbeques in the summer with friends and families. Having family from New Orleans, LA I have tried many recipes for BBQ shrimp. I found this one and everyone loved it! Enjoy! - Heidi VanAmburgh New Orleans Barbecue Shrimp – juicy, bright, and spicy fresh shrimps smothered in a deeply savory buttery sauce made with herbs and spices along with worcestershire sauce, lemon juice, and tons of butter. Saucy, spicy, and messy. Oh, so finger-licking good, indeed!

Ingredients:

1 pound shrimp, peeled and deveined 1-2 tsp creole seasoning 1-2 tbsp cooking oil 3 cloves garlic, minced 1 tsp fresh thyme 2-3 tbsp worcestershire sauce ⅓ cup chicken broth 1 tbsp lemon juice, or more - adjust to taste 1 tsp creole seasoning, or more - adjust to taste ½ tsp white pepper 3-4 tbsp of butter pinch of salt (optional) cayenne pepper (optional) 2 green onion, white and green parts thinly sliced

Directions:

Step 1: Wash the shrimps thoroughly, then gently peel off the skin and devein them. Step 2: Season shrimp with Creole seasoning. Step 3: Heat about a tablespoon of oil over medium heat in a large skillet. Step 4: Add shrimp and sauté for a minute or two; don't overcook them. If that happens, remove the shrimp and add after adding butter. Step 5: Add the garlic and thyme to the pan, and stir for about a minute until fragrant. Step 6: Add worcestershire sauce, chicken broth, lemon juice, creole seasoning, and white pepper. Step 7: Bring it to a boil, then simmer for about 2-3 minutes. Step 8: Toss in butter, salt, and cayenne pepper, and adjust additional seasonings to taste. Garnish with green onions. Step 9: Serve with baguette, rice, or vegetables.

AGRONOMY The saying is “April showers bring May flowers”. The first part has been true so far and we hope May flowers are on their way. One year ago, we were in drought conditions to start the season. After the last two seasons, it is important that we receive the much-needed rainfall to help refill ponds and our underground aquifers that have been stressed from the drought. Our summertime irrigation needs to rely on these aquifers to supply water for the golf course. As a comparison, last year we were already running nighttime irrigation cycles compared to this year where we have run zero nighttime irrigation cycles. The latter being more common this time of year. The course has continued to green up, as we now are mowing more frequently on all playing surfaces. In the month of May, we have many beneficial plant health applications that must be applied to build a sturdy foundation for the summer months. Fertility is one of our most important building blocks. This makes sure our turf has the nutrients needed to handle the wear and tear of a very busy golf season. Our tees received their spring granular fertilizer application. Our fertilizer has a combination of slow-release nitrogen as well as readily available nitrogen for our turf to take up. These will stimulate growth initially while providing a steady release of nutrients over the next several weeks. We will also supplement with liquid nutrients throughout the year as well. Sincerely, Craig Sullivan
